Abstract

In order to support the heat-load of a continuous high power plasma, the upgrade of the first wall of the TORE SUPRA tokamak is now in progress and the first pulses are expected by July 2001. The TORE SUPRA acquisition system, originally conceived for long pulse data acquisition and processing, needs some improvements to meet new requirements such as fast and continuous data access, real time data processing where possible, more efficient post-pulse data processing.

Abstract

A 50 m long magnetized iron torus enclosing a 40 m long target provides the luminosity and acceptance necessary for the study of deep inelastic muon scattering at high Q 2 . The construction and performance of this spectrometer and the associated trigger are described. Details of the data acquisition system and data analysis are also given.

Abstract

An apparatus consisting of two magnetic spectrometers has been constructed at the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) in a missing-mass experiment to identify and select the beam particle and the outgoing one, and to measure their momenta. This paper gives details of the two spectrometers, which are comprised of multiwire proportional chambers, high resolution time-of-flight counters, and aerogel and water Cherenkov detectors.

Abstract

A large toroidal iron spectrometer for the study of deep-inelastic muon scattering at the CERN SPS has been upgraded to extend the accessible kinematic range and to reduce the systematic errors on absolute cross-section measurements. The layout of the improved apparatus, the construction of new detectors and associated electronics, and the structure of a new data-acquisition system are described in detail.

Abstract

SUMMARY Nitrogen is an essential growth component whose availability will limit microbial spread, and as such it serves as a key control point in dictating an organism's adaptation to various environments. Little is known about fungal nutrition in planta. To enhance our understanding of this process we examined the transcriptional adaptation of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, the causal agent for vascular wilt in tomato, during nutritional stress and plant colonization. Using RT-PCR and microarray technology we compared fungal gene expression in planta to axenic nitrogen starvation culture. Several expressed sequence tags, representing at least four genes, were identified that are concomitantly induced during nitrogen starvation and in planta growth. Three of these genes show similarity to a general amino acid permease, a peptide transporter and an uricase, all functioning in organic nitrogen acquisition. We further show that these genes represent a distinguishable subset of the nitrogen-responsive transcripts that respond to amino acids commonly available in the plant. Our results indicate that nitrogen starvation partially mimics in planta growth conditions, and further suggest that minute levels of organic nitrogen sources dictate the final outcome of fungal gene expression in planta. The nature of the identified transcripts suggests modes of nutrient uptake and survival for Fusarium during colonization.
