Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is a powerful technique for mapping nanoscale surface properties through tip-sample interactions. Thermal scanning-probe lithography (tSPL) is an advanced SPM variant that uses a silicon tip on a heated cantilever to sculpt and measure polymer films with nanometer precision. The surfaces produced by tSPL-smooth topographic landscapes-allow mathematically defined contours to be fabricated on the nanoscale, enabling sophisticated functionalities for photonic, electronic, chemical, and biological technologies. Evaluating the physical effects of a landscape requires fitting arbitrary mathematical functions to SPM datasets, however, this capability does not exist in standard analysis programs. Here, we provide an open-source software package (FunFit) to fit analytical functions to SPM data and develop a fabrication and characterization protocol based on this analysis. We demonstrate the benefit of this approach by patterning periodic and quasiperiodic landscapes in a polymer resist with tSPL, which we transfer to hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes with high fidelity via reactive-ion etching. The topographic landscapes in polymers and hBN are measured with tSPL and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. Within the FunFit program, the datasets are corrected for artefacts, fit with analytical functions, and compared, providing critical feedback on the fabrication procedure. Beyond application to tSPL, this protocol can improve analysis, reproducibility, and process development for a broad range of SPM experiments. The protocol can be performed within a working day by an inexperienced user, where fabrication and characterization take a few hours and software analysis takes a few minutes.

Magnetometers based on the extraordinary magnetoresistance (EMR) effect are promising for applications which demand high sensitivity combined with room temperature operation but their application for magnetic field sensing requires further optimization. A key challenge is to obtain Ohmic metal/semiconductor contacts with low contact resistances in EMR devices comprising semiconductors with low carrier densities and high electron mobilities, yet, this topic remains scarcely investigated experimentally. By annealing high-mobility InSb in argon with systematically increasing temperatures, we experimentally demonstrate how the contact resistance to InSb films can be improved by two orders of magnitude by annealing to the micro-Ohm cm2 range without degrading the high mobility. We further show that lowering the contact resistance monotonously increases the room temperature magnetoresistance at 2 T from 700% to 65,000%. Lastly, we explore the origin of intrinsic magnetoresistance in high-mobility InSb thin films and suggest that it can best be explained by multiple band conduction., Comment: 13 pages + 2 pages of supplemental information. 5 Figues + 3 supplemental figures

Quantum devices, which rely on quantum mechanical effects for their operation, may offer advantages, such as reduced dimensions, increased speed, and energy efficiency, compared to conventional devices. However, quantum phenomena are typically observed only at cryogenic temperatures, which limits their practical applications. Two-dimensional materials and their van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide a promising platform for high-temperature quantum devices owing to their strong Coulomb interactions and/or spin-orbit coupling. In this review, we summarise recent research on emergent quantum phenomena in vdW heterostructures based on interlayer tunnelling and the coupling of charged particles and spins, including negative differential resistance, Josephson tunnelling, exciton condensation, and topological superconductivity. These are the underlying mechanisms of energy-efficient devices, including tunnel field-effect transistors, topological/superconducting transistors, and quantum computers. The natural homojunction within vdW layered materials offers clean interfaces and perfectly aligned structures for enhanced interlayer coupling. Twisted bilayers with small angles may also give rise to novel quantum effects. In addition, we highlight several proposed structures for achieving high-temperature Majorana zero modes, which are critical elements of topological quantum computing. This review is helpful for researchers working on interface engineering of vdW heterostructures towards energy-efficient quantum devices operating above the liquid nitrogen temperature.

2D materials research has reached significant scientific milestones, accompanied by a rapidly growing industrial sector in the two decades since the field's inception. Such rapid progress requires pushing past the boundary of what is technically and scientifically feasible and carries the risk of disseminating irreproducible research results. This Expert Recommendation addresses the need for enhanced reproducibility in 2D materials science and physics. Through a comprehensive examination of the factors that affect reproducibility the authors present a set of concrete guidelines designed to improve the reliability of research results. The introduction of a Standardised Template for Experimental Procedures (STEP) offers a novel approach to documenting experimental details that are crucial for replication and troubleshooting. We emphasise the importance of involving stakeholders from research, industry, publishing, funding agencies, and policymaking to foster a culture of transparency, reliability, and trust without blind angles and critical oversights. Dielectric optical resonators traditionally rely on materials with the combination of high refractive indices and low optical losses. Such materials are scarce for operation in visible spectrum and shorter wavelengths. This limitation can be circumvented by relaxing the requirement of low losses. We demonstrate that highly lossy dielectric materials can be structured to support optical resonances that confine light in air voids. We theoretically design void resonances in the visible spectrum and identify resonant modes supported by void arrays. Experimentally, we fabricate void arrays in tungsten diselenide and characterize the confined resonances using far-field reflectance measurements and scanning near-field optical microscopy. Using van der Waals heterostructure assembly, we encapsulate the voids with hexagonal boron nitride which reduces the void volume causing a large spectral blue shift of the void resonance exceeding 150 nm. Our work demonstrates a versatile optical platform for lossy materials, expanding the range of suitable materials and the spectral range of photonic devices.

Grain boundaries play a major role for electron transport in graphene sheets grown by chemical vapor deposition. Here we investigate the electronic structure and transport properties of idealized graphene grain boundaries (GBs) in bi-crystals using first principles density functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium Greens functions (NEGF). We generated 150 different grain boundaries using an automated workflow where their geometry is relaxed with DFT. We find that the GBs generally show a quasi-1D bandstructure along the GB. We group the GBs in four classes based on their conductive properties: transparent, opaque, insulating, and spin-polarizing and show how this is related to angular mismatch, quantum mechanical interference, and out-of-plane buckling. Especially, we find that spin-polarization in the GB correlates with out-of-plane buckling. We further investigate the characteristics of these classes in simulated scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and diffusive transport along the GB which demonstrate how current can be guided along the GB.

The nanoscale contrast in scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) is determined by the optical properties of the sample immediately under the apex of the tip of the atomic force microscope (AFM). There are several models that describe the optical scattering of an incident field by the tip near a surface, and these models have been successful in relating the measured scattering signal to the dielectric function of the sample under the tip. Here, we address a situation that is normally not considered in the existing interaction models, namely the near-field signal arising from thin, highly conductive films in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. According to established theoretical models, highly conductive thin films should show insignificant contrast in the THz range for small variations in conductivity, therefore hindering the use of s-SNOM for nanoscale characterisation. We experimentally demonstrate unexpected but clear and quantifiable layer contrast in the THz s-SNOM signal from few-layer exfoliated graphene as well as subtle nanoscale contrast variations within graphene layers. We use finite-element simulations to confirm that the observed contrast is described by the classical electromagnetics of the scattering mechanism, suggesting that the dipole models must be reformulated to correctly describe the interaction with conductive samples.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) nanoribbons have attracted increased interest due to their properties which can be tailored by tuning their dimensions. Herein, we demonstrate the growth of highly crystalline quasi-one-dimensional (1D)MoS$_2$ nanoribbons and aligned 3D triangular crystals with predominantly 3R or 2H stacking orientation. The synthesis method relies on the reaction between an ultra-thin MoO3-x film grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and NaF in a sulfur-rich environment. The quasi-1D MoS$_2$ nanoribbons can reach several micrometres in length, and feature single-layer (1L) edges aligned with the nanoribbon core, thereby forming a 1L-multilayer (ML) homojunction due to abrupt discontinuity in thickness. The 1L edges of the nanostructures show a pronounced second harmonic generation (SHG) due to the symmetry breaking, in contrast to the centrosymmetric ML structure, which is unsusceptible to the second-order nonlinear process. A pronounced splitting of the Raman spectra was observed in quasi-1D MoS$_2$ nanoribbons arising from distinct contributions from the 2D edges and a multilayer core. Nanoscale imaging reveals the blue-shifted exciton emission of the monolayer nanoribbon compared to the triangular MoS$_2$ counterpart due to built-in local strain and disorder. We further report on a versatile and ultrasensitive photodetector made of a single quasi-1D MoS$_2$ nanoribbon with a maximum responsivity of 872 A/W at the wavelength of 532 nm. The optoelectronic performance of the MoS$_2$ nanoribbon is superior to the previously reported single-nanoribbon photodetectors. Massive Dirac fermions are low-energy electronic excitations characterized by a hyperbolic band dispersion. They play a central role in several emerging physical phenomena such as topological phase transitions, anomalous Hall effects and superconductivity. This work demonstrates that massive Dirac fermions can be controllably induced by lithographically patterning superstructures of nanoscale holes in a graphene device. Their band dispersion is systematically visualized using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with nanoscale spatial resolution. A linear scaling of effective mass with feature sizes is discovered, underlining the Dirac nature of the superstructures. In situ electrostatic doping dramatically enhances the effective hole mass and leads to the direct observation of an electronic band gap that results in a peak-to-peak band separation of (0.64 $\pm$ 0.03) eV, which is shown via first-principles calculations to be strongly renormalized by carrier-induced screening. Moir\'e superlattices in twisted two-dimensional materials have generated tremendous excitement as a platform for achieving quantum properties on demand. However, the moir\'e pattern is highly sensitive to the interlayer atomic registry, and current assembly techniques suffer from imprecise control of the average twist angle, spatial inhomogeneity in the local twist angle, and distortions due to random strain. Here, we demonstrate a new way to manipulate the moir\'e patterns in hetero- and homo-bilayers through in-plane bending of monolayer ribbons, using the tip of an atomic force microscope. This technique achieves continuous variation of twist angles with improved twist-angle homogeneity and reduced random strain, resulting in moir\'e patterns with highly tunable wavelength and ultra-low disorder. Our results pave the way for detailed studies of ultra-low disorder moir\'e systems and the realization of precise strain-engineered devices.

Strong Fermi level pinning (FLP) - often attributed to metal-induced gap states at the interfacial contacts - severely reduces the tunability of the Schottky barrier height of the junction and limits applications of the 2D materials in electronics and optoelectronics. Here, we show that fluorinated bilayer graphene (FBLG) can be used as a barrier to effectively prevent FLP at metal/2D materials interfaces. FLBG can be produced via short exposure (1-3 min) to SF6 plasma that fluorinates only the top layer of a bilayer graphene with covalent C-F bonding, while the bottom layer remains intrinsic, resulting in a band gap opening of about 75 meV. Inserting FBLG between the metallic contacts and a layer of MoS2 reduces the Schottky barrier height dramatically for the low-work function metals (313 and 260 meV for Ti and Cr, respectively) while it increases for the high-work function one ( 160 meV for Pd), corresponding to an improved pinning factor. Our results provide a straightforward method to generate atomically thin dielectrics with applications not only for depinning the Fermi level at metal/transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) interfaces but also for solving many other problems in electronics and optoelectronics

Nanostructuring allows altering of the electronic and photonic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. The efficiency, flexibility, and convenience of top-down lithography processes are however compromised by nm-scale edge roughness and resolution variability issues, which especially affects the performance of 2D materials. Here we study how dry anisotropic etching of multilayer 2D materials with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) may overcome some of these issues, showing results for hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), tungsten disulfide (WS2), tungsten diselenide (WSe2), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy reveal that etching leads to anisotropic hexagonal features in the studied transition metal dichalcogenides, with the relative degree of anisotropy ranked as: WS2 > WSe2 > MoTe2 / MoS2. Etched holes are terminated by zigzag edges while etched dots (protrusions) are terminated by armchair edges. This can be explained by Wulff constructions, taking the relative stabilities of the edges and the AA stacking order into account. Patterns in WS2 are transferred to an underlying graphite layer, demonstrating a possible use for creating sub-10 nm features. In contrast, multilayer hBN exhibits no lateral anisotropy, but shows consistent vertical etch angles, independent of crystal orientation. This is used to create super-resolution lithographic patterns with ultra-sharp corners at the base of the hBN crystal, which are transferred into an underlying graphite crystal. We find that the anisotropic SF6 reactive ion etching process makes it possible to downsize nanostructures to obtain smooth edges, sharp corners, and feature sizes significantly below the resolution limit of electron beam lithography. The nanostructured 2D materials can be used themselves or as etch-masks to pattern other nanomaterials.

Two-dimensional materials have been discovered to exhibit non-volatile resistive switching (NVRS) phenomenon. In our work, we reported the universal NVRS behavior in a dozen metal dichalcogenides, featuring low switching voltage, large on/off ratio, fast switching speed and forming free characteristics. It is generally known that counting statistics is not correctly described by a Gaussian approximation. Nevertheless, in neutron scattering, it is common practice to apply this approximation to the counting statistics; also at low counting numbers. We show that the application of this approximation leads to skewed results not only for low-count features, such as background level estimation, but also for its estimation at double-digit count numbers. In effect, this approximation is shown to be imprecise on all levels of count. Instead, a Multinomial approach is introduced as well as a more standard Poisson method, which we compare with the Gaussian case. These two methods originate from a proper analysis of a multi-detector setup and a standard triple axis instrument.We devise a simple mathematical procedure to produce unbiased fits using the Multinomial distribution and demonstrate this method on synthetic and actual inelastic scattering data. We find that the Multinomial method provide almost unbiased results, and in some cases outperforms the Poisson statistics. Although significantly biased, the Gaussian approach is in general more robust in cases where the fitted model is not a true representation of reality. For this reason, a proper data analysis toolbox for low-count neutron scattering should therefore contain more than one model for counting statistics.

We demonstrate terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to be an accurate, rapid and scalable method to probe the interaction-induced Fermi velocity renormalization {\nu}F^* of charge carriers in graphene. This allows the quantitative extraction of all electrical parameters (DC conductivity {\sigma}DC, carrier density n, and carrier mobility {\mu}) of large-scale graphene films placed on arbitrary substrates via THz-TDS. Particularly relevant are substrates with low relative permittivity (< 5) such as polymeric films, where notable renormalization effects are observed even at relatively large carrier densities (> 10^12 cm-2, Fermi level > 0.1 eV). From an application point of view, the ability to rapidly and non-destructively quantify and map the electrical ({\sigma}DC, n, {\mu}) and electronic ({\nu}F^* ) properties of large-scale graphene on generic substrates is key to utilize this material in applications such as metrology, flexible electronics as well as to monitor graphene transfers using polymers as handling layers., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

Creation of sharp lateral p-n junctions in graphene devices, with transition widths well below the Fermi wavelength of graphene charge carriers, is vital to study and exploit these electronic systems for electron-optical applications. The achievement of such junctions is, however, not trivial due to the presence of a considerable out-of-plane electric field in lateral p-n junctions, resulting in large widths. Metal-graphene interfaces represent a novel, promising and easy to implement technique to engineer such sharp lateral p-n junctions in graphene field-effect devices, in clear contrast to the much wider (i.e. smooth) junctions achieved via conventional local gating. In this work, we present a systematic and robust investigation of the electrostatic problem of metal-induced lateral p-n junctions in gated graphene devices for electron-optics applications, systems where the width of the created junctions is not only determined by the metal used but also depends on external factors such as device geometries, dielectric environment and different operational parameters such as carrier density and temperature. Our calculations demonstrate that sharp junctions can be achieved via metal-graphene interfaces at room temperature in devices surrounded by dielectric media with low relative permittivity. In addition, we show how specific details such as the separation distance between metal and graphene and the permittivity of the gap in-between plays a critical role when defining the p-n junction, not only defining its width w but also the energy shift of graphene underneath the metal. These results can be extended to any two-dimensional (2D) electronic system doped by the presence of metal clusters and thus are relevant for understanding interfaces between metals and other 2D materials., Comment: 48 pages, 9 figures

The adoption of graphene in electronics, optoelectronics and photonics is hindered by the difficulty in obtaining high quality material on technologically-relevant substrates, over wafer-scale sizes and with metal contamination levels compatible with industrial requirements. To date, the direct growth of graphene on insulating substrates has proved to be challenging, usually requiring metal-catalysts or yielding defective graphene. In this work, we demonstrate a metal-free approach implemented in commercially available reactors to obtain high-quality monolayer graphene on c-plane sapphire substrates via chemical vapour deposition (CVD). We identify via low energy electron diffraction (LEED), low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements the Al-rich reconstruction root31R9 of sapphire to be crucial for obtaining epitaxial graphene. Raman spectroscopy and electrical transport measurements reveal high-quality graphene with mobilities consistently above 2000 cm2/Vs. We scale up the process to 4-inch and 6-inch wafer sizes and demonstrate that metal contamination levels are within the limits for back-end-of-line (BEOL) integration. We experimentally investigate the charge induction mechanism across gated, narrow, ballistic graphene devices with different degrees of edge disorder. By using magnetoconductance measurements as the probing technique, we demonstrate that devices with large edge disorder exhibit a nearly homogeneous capacitance profile across the device channel, close to the case of an infinitely large graphene sheet. In contrast, devices with lower edge disorder (< 1 nm roughness) are strongly influenced by the fringing electrostatic field at graphene boundaries, in quantitative agreement with theoretical calculations for pristine systems. Specifically, devices with low edge disorder present a large effective capacitance variation across the device channel with a nontrivial, inhomogeneous profile due not only to classical electrostatics but also to quantum mechanical effects. We show that such quantum capacitance contribution, occurring due to the low density of states (DOS) across the device in the presence of an external magnetic field, is considerably altered as a result of the gate electrostatics in the ballistic graphene device. Our conclusions can be extended to any two dimensional (2D) electronic system confined by a hard-wall potential and are important for understanding the electronic structure and device applications of conducting 2D materials., Comment: 3 figures

Engineering light-matter interactions up to the strong-coupling regime at room temperature is one of the cornerstones of modern nanophotonics. Achieving this goal will enable new platforms for potential applications such as quantum information processing, quantum light sources and even quantum metrology. Materials like transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) and in particular tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) possess large transition dipole moments comparable to semiconductor-based quantum dots, and strong exciton binding energies allowing the detailed exploration of light-matter interactions at room temperature. Additionally, recent works have shown that coupling TMDCs to plasmonic nanocavities with light tightly focused on the nanometer scale can reach the strong-coupling regime at ambient conditions. Here, we use ultra-thin single-crystalline gold nanodisks featuring large in-plane electromagnetic dipole moments aligned with the exciton transition-dipole moments located in monolayer WS$_2$. Through scattering and reflection spectroscopy we demonstrate strong coupling at room temperature with a Rabi splitting of $\sim$108 meV. In order to go further into the strong-coupling regime and inspired by recent experimental work by St\"uhrenberg et al., we couple these nanodisks to multilayer WS$_2$. Due to an increase in the number of excitons coupled to our nanodisks, we achieve a Rabi splitting of $\sim$175 meV, a major increase of 62%. To our knowledge, this is the highest Rabi splitting reported for TMDCs coupled to open plasmonic cavities. Our results suggest that ultra-thin single-crystalline gold nanodisks coupled to WS$_2$ represent an exquisite platform to explore light-matter interactions.

Graphene has proven to host outstanding mesoscopic effects involving massless Dirac quasiparticles travelling ballistically resulting in the current flow exhibiting light-like behaviour. A new branch of 2D electronics inspired by the standard principles of optics is rapidly evolving, calling for a deeper understanding of transport in large-scale devices at a quantum level. Here we perform large-scale quantum transport calculations based on a tight-binding model of graphene and the non-equilibrium Green's function method and include the effects of $p-n$ junctions of different shape, magnetic field, and absorptive regions acting as drains for current. We stress the importance of choosing absorbing boundary conditions in the calculations to correctly capture how current flows in the limit of infinite devices. As a specific application we present a fully quantum-mechanical framework for the "2D Dirac fermion microscope" recently proposed by B{\o}ggild $et\, al.$ [Nat. Comm. 8, 10.1038 (2017)], tackling several key electron-optical effects therein predicted via semiclassical trajectory simulations, such as electron beam collimation, deflection and scattering off Veselago dots. Our results confirm that a semiclassical approach to a large extend is sufficient to capture the main transport features in the mesoscopic limit and the optical regime, but also that a richer electron-optical landscape is to be expected when coherence or other purely quantum effects are accounted for in the simulations., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Only a few of the vast range of potential two-dimensional materials have been isolated or synthesised to date. Typically, 2D materials are discovered by mechanically exfoliating naturally occurring bulk crystals to produce atomically thin layers, after which a material-specific vapour synthesis method must be developed to grow interesting candidates in a scalable manner. Here we show a general approach for synthesising thin layers of two-dimensional binary compounds. We apply the method to obtain high quality, epitaxial MoS2 films, and extend the principle to the synthesis of a wide range of other materials - both well-known and never-before isolated - including transition metal sulphides, selenides, tellurides, and nitrides. This approach greatly simplifies the synthesis of currently known materials, and provides a general framework for synthesising both predicted and unexpected new 2D compounds.

Through a combination of monitoring the Raman spectral characteristics of 2D materials grown on copper catalyst layers, and wafer scale automated detection of the fraction of transferred material, we reproducibly achieve transfers with over 97.5% monolayer hexagonal boron nitride and 99.7% monolayer graphene coverage, for up to 300 mm diameter wafers. We find a strong correlation between the transfer coverage obtained for graphene and the emergence of a lower wavenumber 2D- peak component, with the concurrent disappearance of the higher wavenumber 2D+ peak component during oxidation of the catalyst surface. The 2D peak characteristics can therefore act as an unambiguous predictor of the success of the transfer. Despite the numerous reports on the topic, examples of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene-based anticorrosive coatings able to provide long-term protection (i.e., several months) of metals are still unavailable. Here, we finally present a polymer-graphene hybrid coating, comprising two single layers of CVD graphene sandwiched by three layers of polyvinyl butyral, that provides complete corrosion protection to commercial aluminum alloys even after 120 days of exposure to simulated seawater. The essential role played by graphene in the hybrid coating is evident when we compare the results from a polymer-only coating of the same thickness, which fails in protecting the metal after barely 30 days. With the emergence of commercially available large-area CVD graphene, our work demonstrates a straightforward approach towards high-performance anticorrosive coatings, which can be extended to other two-dimensional materials and polymers, for long-term protection of various relevant metals and alloys., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures + suppl. info

The electron microscope has been a powerful, highly versatile workhorse in the fields of material and surface science, micro and nanotechnology, biology and geology, for nearly 80 years. The advent of two-dimensional materials opens new possibilities for realising an analogy to electron microscopy in the solid state. Here we provide a perspective view on how a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermion-based microscope can be realistically implemented and operated, using graphene as a vacuum chamber for ballistic electrons. We use semiclassical simulations to propose concrete architectures and design rules of 2D electron guns, deflectors, tunable lenses and various detectors. The simulations show how simple objects can be imaged with well-controlled and collimated in-plane beams consisting of relativistic charge carriers. The assembly of individual two-dimensional materials into van der Waals heterostructures enables the construction of layered three-dimensional materials with desirable electronic and optical properties. A core problem in the fabrication of these structures is the formation of clean interfaces between the individual two-dimensional materials which would affect device performance. We present here a technique for the rapid batch fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures, demonstrated by the controlled production of 22 mono-, bi- and trilayer graphene stacks encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride with close to 100% yield. For the monolayer devices we found semiclassical mean free paths up to 0.9 micrometer, with the narrowest samples showing clear indications of the transport being affected by boundary scattering. The presented method readily lends itself to fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures in both ambient and controlled atmospheres, while the ability to assemble pre-patterned layers paves the way for complex three-dimensional architectures., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures, 34 references, 14 supplementary figures

The BRAHMS collaboration has measured transverse momentum spectra of pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons at rapidities 0 and 3 for Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. As the collisions become more central the collective radial flow increases while the temperature of kinetic freeze-out decreases. The temperature is lower and the radial flow weaker at forward rapidity. Pion and kaon yields with transverse momenta between 1.5 and 2.5 GeV/c are suppressed for central collisions relative to scaled $p+p$ collisions. This suppression, which increases as the collisions become more central is consistent with jet quenching models and is also present with comparable magnitude at forward rapidity. At such rapidities initial state effects may also be present and persistence of the meson suppression to high rapidity may reflect a combination of jet quenching and nuclear shadowing. Using ab-initio methods we investigate the possibility of three-terminal graphene "T-junction" devices and show that these all-graphene edge contacts are energetically feasible when the 1D interface itself is free from foreign atoms. We examine the energetics of various junction structures as a function of the atomic scale geometry. Three-terminal equilibrium Green's functions are used to determine the transmission spectrum and contact resistance of the system. We find that the most symmetric structures have a significant binding energy, and we determine the contact resistances in the junction to be in the range of 1-10 kOhm which is comparable to the best contact resistance reported for edge-contacted graphene-metal contacts. We conclude that conducting all-carbon T-junctions should be feasible.

We present the first systematic study of the stability of the structure and electrical properties of FeCl$_3$ intercalated few-layer graphene to high levels of humidity and high temperature. Complementary experimental techniques such as electrical transport, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy conclusively demonstrate the unforeseen stability of this transparent conductor to a relative humidity up to $100 \%$ at room temperature for 25 days, to a temperature up to $150\,^\circ$C in atmosphere and up to a temperature as high as $620\,^\circ$C in vacuum, that is more than twice higher than the temperature at which the intercalation is conducted. The stability of FeCl$_3$ intercalated few-layer graphene together with its unique values of low square resistance and high optical transparency, makes this material an attractive transparent conductor in future flexible electronic applications., Comment: Scientific Reports, volume 5, article no. 7609

Chemical vapor deposited graphene is nanopatterned by a spherical block-copolymer etch mask. The use of spherical rather than cylindrical block copolymers allows homogeneous patterning of cm-scale areas without any substrate surface treatment. Raman spectroscopy was used to study the controlled generation of point defects in the graphene lattice with increasing etching time, confirming that alongside the nanomesh patterning, the nanopatterned CVD graphene presents a high defect density between the mesh holes. The nanopatterned samples showed sensitivities for NO2 of more than one order of magnitude higher than for non-patterned graphene. NO2 concentrations as low as 300 ppt were detected with an ultimate detection limit of tens of ppt. This is so far the smallest value reported for not UV illuminated graphene chemiresistive NO2 gas sensors. The drastic improvement in the gas sensitivity is believed to be due to the high adsorption site density, thanks to the combination of edge sites and point defect sites. Nanostructured graphene on SiO2 substrates pave the way for enhanced light-matter interactions and explorations of strong plasmon-phonon hybridization in the mid-infrared regime. Unprecedented large-area graphene nanodot and antidot optical arrays are fabricated by nanosphere lithography, with structural control down to the sub-100 nanometer regime. The interaction between graphene plasmon modes and the substrate phonons is experimentally demonstrated and structural control is used to map out the hybridization of plasmons and phonons, showing coupling energies of the order 20 meV. In this paper we apply topology optimization to micro-structured superhydrophobic surfaces for the first time. It has been experimentally observed that a droplet suspended on a brush of micrometric posts shows a high static contact angle and low roll-off angle. To keep the fluid from penetrating the space between the posts, we search for an optimal post cross section, that minimizes the vertical displacement of the liquid-air interface at the base of the drop when a pressure difference is applied. Topology optimisation proves effective in this framework, showing that posts with a branching cross-section are optimal, which is consistent with several biologic strategies to achieve superhydrophobicity. Through a filtering technique, we can also control the characteristic length scale of the optimal design, thus obtaining feasible geometries

Local curvature, or bending, of a graphene sheet is known to increase the chemical reactivity presenting an opportunity for templated chemical functionalization. Using first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) we investigate the reduction of the reaction barrier for adsorption of atomic hydrogen at linear bends in graphene. We find a significant lowering (15%) for realistic radii of curvature (20 {\AA}), and that adsorption along the linear bend leads to a stable linear kink. We compute the electronic transport properties of individual and multiple kink-lines, and demonstrate how these act as efficient barriers for electron transport. In particular, two parallel kink-lines form a graphene pseudo-nanoribbon structure with a semi-metallic/semi-conducting electronic structure closely related to the corresponding isolated ribbons; the ribbon band gap translates into a transport gap for transport across the kink lines. We finally consider pseudo-ribbon based heterostructures, and propose that such structures present a novel approach for band gap engineering in nanostructured graphene., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, reference added

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5

We present here a method for cleaning intermediate-size (5~50nm) contamination from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Electron beam deposition causes a continuous increase of carbonaceous material on graphene and graphite surfaces, which is difficult to remove by conventional techniques. Direct mechanical wiping using a graphite nanoeraser is observed to drastically reduce the amount of contamination. After the mechanical removal of contamination, the graphite surfaces were able to self-retract after shearing, indicating that van der Waals contact bonding is restored. Since contact bonding provides an indication of a level of cleanliness normally only attainable in a high-quality clean-room, we discuss potential applications in preparation of ultraclean surfaces., Comment: 10 pages, two figures

We have measured the distributions of protons and deuterons produced in high energy heavy ion Au+Au collisions at RHIC over a very wide range of transverse and longitudinal momentum. Near mid-rapidity we have also measured the distribution of anti-protons and anti-deuterons. We present our results in the context of coalescence models. In particular we extract the "volume of homogeneity" and the average phase-space density for protons and anti-protons. Near central rapidity the coalescence parameter $B_2(p_T)$ and the space averaged phase-space density $ (p_T)$ are very similar for both protons and anti-protons. For protons we see little variation of either $B_2(p_T)$ or the space averaged phase-space density as the rapidity increases from 0 to 3. However both these quantities depend strongly on $p_T$ at all rapidities. These results are in contrast to lower energy data where the proton and anti-proton phase-space densities are different at $y$=0 and both $B_2$ and $f$ depend strongly on rapidity., Comment: Document updated after proofs received from PRC
