The derivation of a function is a fundamental tool for solving problems in calculus. Consequently, the motivations for investigating physical systems capable of performing this task are numerous. Furthermore, the potential to develop an optical computer to replace conventional computers has led us to create an optical algorithm and propose an experimental setup for implementing the derivative of one-dimensional real-valued functions using a paraxial and monochromatic laser beam. To complement the differentiation algorithm, we have experimentally implemented a novel optical algorithm that can transfer a two-dimensional phase-encoded function to the intensity profile of a light beam. We consider the propagation of light beams through disordered lattices of coupled waveguides searching for Anderson localization and investigating the evolution of nonclassical properties of injected quantum states. We assume that the beam is initially in a variety of states, such as the complementary coherent state, the reciprocal binomial state, and the polynomial state. The statistical properties of the evolved states were analyzed numerically as functions of the localization/delocalization parameters averaged over many realizations of disorder. We also numerically reconstruct the Wigner function of the output state. Interestingly, we find that high values of the disorder tend to preserve quantum properties of some input states when we look at the input waveguide despite the coupling between it and the neighboring waveguides.

We propose an experimental setup for studying the Anderson localization of light in the continuous transverse spatial degrees of freedom of the photons. This physical phenomenon can be observed in the transverse profile of a paraxial and quasi-monochromatic beam of light using a spatial light modulator. The light modulator acts in the laser beam as a weak random potential. Here, differently from the standard models studied in the literature, our setup splits the dispersion and potential terms along the beam evolution. By numerical simulations we confirm the feasibility of our experimental proposal.

We present a classical optics simulation of the one-dimensional Dirac equation for a free particle. Positive and negative energy components are represented by orthogonal polarizations of a free propagating beam, while the spatial profile represents the spatial wave function of the particle. Using a completely tunable time parameter, we observed the oscillation of the average value of the Dirac position operator - known as zitterbewegung (ZB). We are also able to measure the so called mean-position operator which is a single-particle observable and presents no oscillations. Our work opens the way for optical simulation of interesting phenomenon of relativistic systems, as well as condensed-matter physics, without any requirement for specially engineered medium.

One-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations are derived to describe the axial effective dynamics of cigar-shaped atomic repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates trapped with anharmonic transverse potentials. The accuracy of these equations in the perturbative, Thomas-Fermi, and crossover regimes were verified numerically by comparing the ground-state profiles, transverse chemical potentials and oscillation patterns with those results obtained for the full three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We study the presence of exact localized solutions in a quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Using a specific ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. The influence of a saturable nonlinearity on the modulation instability in oppositely directed coupler in the presence of high-order effects is investigated. By using the standard linear stability analysis, we obtain the instability gain that exhibits a significant change in the bands of instability due to the effects of a saturable nonlinearity. We also show that even in the presence of saturation there is no change in instability gain when we compare the results obtained for both channels not influenced by self-steepening effect or for both channels influenced by self-steepening effect but opposite in sign. Regarding the Raman effect, there is reflection symmetry (asymmetry) to the gain at zero perturbation frequency when the values of the Raman coefficients in each directional coupler are equal and with same (opposite) sign. For the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime we observe that the growth of the saturation parameter is followed by an increase in the null gain region near {\Omega} = 0, enlarging the separation of the instability bands close to this point. Finally, we show that an efficient control of the modulation instability can be realized by adjusting self-steepening effect and intrapulse Raman scattering, even in the presence of a saturable nonlinearity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

In this article we consider two spin$-1/2$ chains described, respectively, by the thermodynamic limit of the $XY$ model with the usual two site interaction, and an extension of this model (without taking the thermodynamics limit), called $XYT$, were a three site interaction term is presented. To investigate the critical behaviour of such systems we employ tools from quantum information theory. Specifically, we show that the local quantum uncertainty, a quantity introduced in order to quantify the minimum quantum share of the variance of a local measurement, can be used to indicate quantum phase transitions presented by these models at zero temperature. Due to the connection of this quantity with the quantum Fisher information, the results presented here may be relevant for quantum metrology and quantum thermodynamics., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures.
