Search

Understanding the physical processes involved in the propagation of cosmic rays in the intergalactic media is one of the biggest problems in astrophysics today. It is an important topic because one first tries to identify the sources and later to understand the physical processes that occur when the particles are accelerated to ultra-high energies (E > 10 18 eV). And because cosmic rays are charged particles, they are deflected in the existing magnetic fields as they propagate to Earth, making it very difficult to correlate their direction of arrival with astrophysical sources. Moreover, cosmic rays consist mainly of atomic nuclei interacting with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the extragalactic background light (EBL) during their propagation, and a significant part of their energy is consumed in these processes (for a proton with E ∼ 10 21 eV, its energy is approximately halved over a distance of 20 Mpc). In this article, we describe the main processes between background photons and ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. We have also used the equations for comparison with the most commonly used programme in this field to illustrate the physical processes addressed. We conclude that the result of the equations leads to well-established results in the field, such as the importance of EBL for the process of photodesintegration (Allard, 2012). Cross-sections and rate coefficients for the radiative association processes of Al(2P) with Cl(2P) for the formation of aluminium monochloride (AlCl) and P+(3P) with Cl(2P) to form phosphorus monochloryl cation (PCl+) have been estimated as a function of temperature. Rate coefficients have been estimated from cross-sections, which are calculated using a quantum mechanical method. They are found to vary from 4.95 × 10–21 to 4.24 × 10–16 and from 7.10 × 10–18 to 3.50 × 10–17 cm3 s–1 for AlCl and PCl+, respectively, for temperatures ranging from 10 to 15   000 K. The obtained rate constants are fitted with the Arrhenius–Kooij functions for incorporation into astrochemical reaction data bases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this review, we present a self-contained introduction to axion-like particles (ALPs) with a particular focus on their effects on photon polarization: both theoretical and phenomenological aspects are discussed. We derive the photon survival probability in the presence of photon–ALP interaction, the corresponding final photon degree of linear polarization, and the polarization angle in a wide energy interval. The presented results can be tested by current and planned missions such as IXPE (already operative), eXTP, XL-Calibur, NGXP, XPP in the X-ray band and like COSI (approved to launch), e-ASTROGAM, and AMEGO in the high-energy range. Specifically, we describe ALP-induced polarization effects on several astrophysical sources, such as galaxy clusters, blazars, and gamma-ray bursts, and we discuss their real detectability. In particular, galaxy clusters appear as very good observational targets in this respect. Moreover, in the very-high-energy (VHE) band, we discuss a peculiar ALP signature in photon polarization, in principle capable of proving the ALP existence. Unfortunately, present technologies cannot detect photon polarization up to such high energies, but the observational capability of the latter ALP signature in the VHE band could represent an interesting challenge for the future. As a matter of fact, the aim of this review is to show new ways to make progress in the physics of ALPs, thanks to their effects on photon polarization, a topic that has aroused less interest in the past, but which is now timely with the advent of many new polarimetric missions. Large-scale cosmic filaments connect galaxies, clusters, and voids. They are permeated by magnetic fields with a variety of topologies. Cosmic rays with energies up to 10 20 eV can be produced in astrophysical environments associated with star-formation and AGN activities. The fate of these cosmic rays in filaments, which cannot be directly observed on Earth, are rarely studied. We investigate the high-energy processes associated with energetic particles (cosmic rays) in filaments, adopting an ecological approach that includes galaxies, clusters/superclusters, and voids as key cosmological structures in the filament ecosystem. We derive the phenomenology for modelling interfaces between filaments and these structures, and investigate how the transfer and fate of energetic cosmic ray protons are affected by the magnetism of the interfaces. We consider different magnetic field configurations in filaments and assess the implications for cosmic ray confinement and survival against hadronic pion-producing and photo-pair interactions. Our analysis shows that the fate of the particles depends on the location of their origin within a filament ecosystem, and that filaments act as 'highways', channelling cosmic rays between galaxies, galaxy clusters, and superclusters. Filaments can also operate as cosmic 'fly paper', capturing cosmic ray protons with energies up to 10 18 eV from cosmic voids. Our analysis predicts the presence of a population of ∼ 10 12 – 10 16 eV cosmic ray protons in filaments and voids accumulated continually over cosmic time. These protons do not suffer significant energy losses through photo-pair or pion production, nor can they be cooled efficiently. The gamma-ray Fermi -LAT Galactic Centre excess (GCE) has puzzled scientists for over 15 yr. Despite ongoing debates about its properties, and especially its spatial distribution, its nature remains elusive. We scrutinize how the estimated spatial morphology of this excess depends on models for the Galactic diffuse emission, focusing particularly on the extent to which the Galactic plane and point sources are masked. Our main aim is to compare a spherically symmetric morphology – potentially arising from the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles – with a boxy morphology – expected if faint unresolved sources in the Galactic bulge dominate the excess emission. Recent claims favouring a DM-motivated template for the GCE are shown to rely on a specific Galactic bulge template, which performs worse than other templates for the Galactic bulge. We find that a non-parametric model of the Galactic bulge derived from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey results in a significantly better fit for the GCE than DM-motivated templates. This result is independent of whether a galprop -based model or a more non-parametric ring-based model is used to describe the diffuse Galactic emission. This conclusion remains true even when additional freedom is added in the background models, allowing for non-parametric modulation of the model components and substantially improving the fit quality. When adopted, optimized background models provide robust results in terms of preference for a boxy bulge morphology for the GCE, regardless of the mask applied to the Galactic plane. We analyse 13 yr of Fermi Large Area Telescope Pass 8 events from 127 gamma-ray emitting millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the energy range 0.1–100 GeV and significantly detect 118 MSPs. We fit the stacked emission with a log parabola (LP) spectral model that we show is preferred to two previously published models. We consider the influence of pulsar properties and observed geometric effects on spectral features by defining energy flux colours for both the individual MSPs, and our stacked model as a baseline. There is no correlation of colours with pulsar luminosity, |$\dot{E}$|⁠ , surface magnetic field, or magnetic impact angle. We also find that pulsar geometry has little effect on the observed gamma-ray spectrum, which is in tension with previous modelling of gamma-ray emission with respect to pulsar geometry. Our LP MSP model is applicable to problems where an ensemble of gamma-ray MSPs is considered, such as that of the Galactic Centre excess or in the case of emission from globular clusters. Some of the Intermediate Mass Black Hole candidates observed at the centre of galaxies or in globular clusters and some of the Supermassive Black Holes seen at the centre of many galaxies might be of primordial origin. Indeed, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) of such mass could have formed when the Universe was ∼1–103 s old, due to the collapse of density fluctuations. In particular, when the Universe was ∼1 s in age, Electron–Positron Annihilation (EPA) took place. We explore the formation of intermediate mass and supermassive PBHs, taking into account the effect of the EPA when the fluctuations have a running tilt power-law spectrum: when these cross the 10−0.5–103.0 s Universe horizon they could produce 5 × 103–5 × 108 M⊙ PBHs with a density as high as ∼1010/Gpc3. On average, this implies a population of about one thousand PBHs in the Local Group of Galaxies, with the nearest one at about 250 kpc, just under half the distance to the Andromeda galaxy (M31). High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

We compile a catalogue of 578 highly probable and 62 likely red supergiants (RSGs) of the Milky Way, which represents the largest list of Galactic RSG candidates designed for continuous follow-up efforts to date. We match distances measured by Gaia DR3, 2MASS photometry, and a 3D Galactic dust map to obtain luminous bright late-type stars. Determining the stars' bolometric luminosities and effective temperatures, we compare to Geneva stellar evolution tracks to determine likely RSG candidates, and quantify contamination using a catalogue of Galactic AGB in the same luminosity-temperature space. We add details for common or interesting characteristics of RSG, such as multistar system membership, variability, and classification as a runaway. As potential future core-collapse supernova progenitors, we study the ability of the catalogue to inform the Supernova Early Warning System (SNEWS) coincidence network made to automate pointing, and show that for 3D position estimates made possible by neutrinos, the number of progenitor candidates can be significantly reduced, improving our ability to observe the progenitor pre-explosion and the early phases of core-collapse supernovae. Understanding the origin of the diffuse flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube has become a challenging issue within present High Energy Astrophysics. In this work, we present a model to explore the potential neutrino emission of starburst galaxies (SBG) by considering three different neutrino production zones that can be associated to a typical single SBG. The first zone is the starburst nucleus, where due to the high rate of supernova explosions, a significant amount of protons can be accelerated to high energies and undergo pp interactions with cold protons of the interstellar medium. The second zone we consider is the corresponding to the starburst wind, which is formed by the hot gas that emerges from the nucleus and interacts with the intergalactic medium generating shocks. Protons accelerated there can undergo pp interactions with the ambient matter. The third neutrino production zone we consider, is an external one, where we account for the possibility that protons escaping from the whole system interact with the cosmic microwave background. Finally, adding the neutrino contributions of the three zones, we calculate the diffuse neutrino flux and the diffuse photon flux by integration on the redshift range appropriate for SBG. We find that the model behaves well applied to nearby galaxies such as M82 and NGC 253. The contributions made to the diffuse neutrino flux are able to explain part of the data provided by IceCube if typical parameters are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The γ -ray sky above a few tens of megaelectronvolts (MeV) reveals some of the most powerful and energetic phenomena of our Universe. The Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE) Gamma-ray Mission was launched in 2007 with the aim of observing celestial sources by means of three instruments covering a wide range of energies, from hard X-rays up to 30 GeV. Thanks to its wide field of view, AGILE set to observe and detect emission from pulsars, pulsar wind nebulae, gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, fast radio bursts, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, and the electromagnetic counterparts of neutrinos and gravitational waves. In particular, the fast on-ground processing and analysis chain allowed the AGILE team to promptly respond to transient events, and activate or participate in multiwavelength observing campaigns. Eventually, after 17 years of operations, the AGILE Italian scientific satellite re-entered the atmosphere on 14 February 2024, ending its intense activity as a hunter of some of the most energetic cosmic sources in the Universe that emit X and γ -rays. The WAT (wide-angle-tail) radio galaxies ESO 137-006 and 3C338 show radio filaments including some extending between the two radio tails. If, in analogy to the Parker solar wind model, jets carry a powerful relativistic electric current, the continuity equation shows that slow return current responding to a temporal variation in jet power would inevitably lead to a localized short-lived charging-up, i.e. a temporary patch of electric field. Progenitors of the observed radio filaments are the relic jets left by repeated episodes of nuclear activity and pushed sideways by the ram pressure, though remaining connected to the broad radio lobes. The Debye shielding distance, for energetic particles with a p −2-distribution of momentum p , allows a very large Debye scale at the highest energies, approaching the radio galaxy scale, with a huge total energy content. Here, we propose that discharges dissipating the transient patches of electric fields through the filaments illuminate them. Our proposal is based on gradient drift currents within the bipolar jets, allowing for drift speeds approaching the speed of light. We sketch a scenario how a discharge current sometimes gets manifested as a radio filament connecting opposite lobes/tails of a WAT radio galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The D/H ratio in astrophysical environments has instigated the scientists for at least 50 years. The wide range of values in the interstellar medium (ISM) from 10e to 7 to 10e-1 have usually been claimed to be due to small zero-point energy differences between reactants and products involving D and H (mainly at low temperatures). Here, we present a new source of deuteration processes in the ISM clouds as a result of cosmic ray irradiation. As a study object, we consider a typical molecular clump under the presence of incoming cosmic rays simulated computationally. The calculations were performed employing the Monte Carlo toolkit GEANT4 code (considering hadronic physics) and considering mainly the proton and alpha component of the incoming cosmic rays from the ISM (the dominant ones for the production of secondary protons and deuterons). The results suggest an increasing D/H ratio as function of time in the central part of molecular clumps (<200 AU) with the largest deuteration in the central region of the cloud, and a bump in the D/H ratio around 2–10 AU (which becomes more pronounced for clouds with larger timescales; > 10 Myrs). The results also show that for timescales between 10 and 100 Myrs the central part of the cloud has D/H around 6-16e-3, a value compatible with the observed D/H in some interstellar clouds. This work adds a new piece to the D/H puzzle of the ISM and might also help to explain the D/H ratio measured in different objects inside the Solar system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document is a correction to a previous study on the multi-wavelength and neutrino spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of potential neutrino sources. The correction includes updated data and recalculations of fluxes and confidence bands. The study found that 27 out of 34 sources had a best-fit neutrino flux greater than 0, but 11 of those cases had a 68% confidence level compatible with no flux. The study also found a 2.2σ association between sources with matching gamma-ray and neutrino fluxes. However, the authors caution that these results are based on a small background sample and require confirmation with better statistics. [Extracted from the article]

The Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) is investigated as a target for dark matter (DM) annihilation searches utilizing J-factor distributions calculated directly from a high-resolution hydrodynamic simulation of the infall and tidal disruption of Sgr around the Milky Way. In contrast to past studies, the simulation incorporates DM, stellar and gaseous components for both the Milky Way and the Sgr progenitor galaxy. The simulated distributions account for significant tidal disruption affecting the DM density profile. Our estimate of the J-factor value for Sgr, J Sgr = 1.48 × 1010 M |$_\odot ^2$| kpc−5 (6.46 × 1016 GeV cm−5), is significantly lower than found in prior studies. This value, while formally a lower limit, is likely close to the true J-factor value for Sgr. It implies a DM cross-section incompatibly large in comparison with existing constraints would be required to attribute recently observed gamma-ray emission from Sgr to DM annihilation. We also calculate a J-factor value using a NFW profile fitted to the simulated DM density distribution to facilitate comparison with past studies. This NFW J-factor value supports the conclusion that most past studies have overestimated the dark matter density of Sgr on small scales. This, together with the fact that the Sgr has recently been shown to emit gamma-rays of astrophysical origin, complicate the use of Sgr in indirect DM detection searches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are explosive transient events occurring at cosmological distances, releasing a large amount of energy as electromagnetic radiation over several energy bands. We report the detection of the long GRB 201216C by the MAGIC telescopes. The source is located at z  = 1.1 and thus it is the farthest one detected at very high energies. The emission above 70 GeV of GRB 201216C is modelled together with multiwavelength data within a synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario. We find that SSC can explain the broad-band data well from the optical to the very-high-energy band. For the late-time radio data, a different component is needed to account for the observed emission. Differently from previous GRBs detected in the very-high-energy range, the model for GRB 201216C strongly favours a wind-like medium. The model parameters have values similar to those found in past studies of the afterglows of GRBs detected up to GeV energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been hypothesized that dark matter is comprised of ultra-light bosons whose collective phenomena can be described as a scalar field undergoing coherent oscillations. Examples include axion and fuzzy dark matter models. In this ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) scenario, the harmonic variation in the field's energy–momentum tensor sources an oscillating component of the gravitational potential that we show can resonantly excite stellar oscillations. A mathematical framework for predicting the amplitude of these oscillations is developed, which reveals that ULDM predominantly excites p-modes of degree l  = 1. An investigation of resonantly excited solar oscillations is presented, from which we conclude that dark matter induced oscillations of the Sun are likely undetectable. We present here a model-independent theoretical discussion of differential cross-sections in photodisintegration of lithium with unpolarized and linearly polarized photons. In recent years, experimental measurements are being carried out on the photodisintegration of lithium in the reaction channel 7Li(γ, n)6Li to study the angular dependence of cross-section. In this regard, we have studied the spin structure of amplitudes in 7Li(γ, n)6Li by expressing the differential cross-section in terms of Legendre polynomials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In experiments where one searches a large parameter space for an anomaly, one often finds many spurious noise-induced peaks in the likelihood. This is known as the look-elsewhere effect, and must be corrected for when performing statistical analysis. This paper introduces a method to calibrate the false alarm probability (FAP), or p-value, for a given dataset by considering the heights of the highest peaks in the likelihood. Specifically, we derive an equation relating the global p-value to the rank and height of local maxima. In the simplest form of self-calibration, the look-elsewhere-corrected χ2 of a physical peak is approximated by the χ2 of the peak minus the χ2 of the highest noise-induced peak, with accuracy improved by considering lower peaks. In contrast to alternative methods, this approach has negligible computational cost as peaks in the likelihood are a byproduct of every peak-search analysis. We apply to examples from astronomy, including planet detection, periodograms, and cosmology.

The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is the deepest underground science facility in the United States. SURF hosts world-leading experiments in neutrino, astroparticle and nuclear physics, as well as projects in biology, geology, and engineering, and is home to a major excavation project making space for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory’s Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), which will power the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). An emphasis on outreach and education is embedded in SURF’s mission statement: “to advance world-class science and inspire learning across generations.” To achieve this mission, SURF goes beyond established science communication methods, including operating an open-to-the-public visitor center, hosting multiple public outreach events per month, and an annual city-wide science festival. Furthermore, SURF is training K-12 science educators, developing school curriculum units, and providing classroom materials, based on science researched at the laboratory. The strategic approach, specific methods, and successful outcomes of these programs, which are based on SURF’s science, location, and community, may serve as examples for effective science education, public outreach, and community engagement.

We present hybrid spectral energy distributions, combining photon, and neutrino fluxes, for a sample of blazars, which are candidate IceCube neutrino sources. We furthermore check for differences in our sources' variability in the near-infrared, optical, X-ray, and γ-ray bands compared to a sample of non-neutrino source candidate blazars, and investigate the state of each blazar at the arrival time of high-energy neutrinos. We find no significant differences when comparing our sample with control sources, also in terms of their spectral energy distributions, and no correlation between flaring states and neutrino arrival times. Looking for signatures of hadronic production, we check for similar strengths of the γ-ray and neutrino fluxes and find a |$2.2\, \sigma$| signal for our source candidates. The hybrid spectral energy distributions assembled here will form the basis of the next step of our project, namely lepto-hadronic modelling of these blazars to assess the physical likelihood of a neutrino connection. Observations of the vicinity of a variety of galactic gamma-ray sources have indicated a local suppression of diffusivity of cosmic rays (CRs) by up to three orders of magnitude. However, the impact of these low-diffusion zones on global properties of CR transport is, however, only poorly understood. Here, we argue that CR nuclear ratios, like the boron-to-carbon ratio and relative abundances of Beryllium isotopes are sensitive to the filling fraction of such low-diffusion zones and hence their measurements can be used to constrain the typical sizes and ages of such regions. We have performed a careful parameter study of a CR transport model that allows for different diffusion coefficients κdisc and κhalo in the galactic disc and halo, respectively. Making use of preliminary data from the AMS-02 experiment on the ratio of Beryllium isotopes, we find a 3.5σ preference for a suppression of the diffusion coefficient in the disc with a best-fitting value of |$\kappa _{\mathrm{disc}}/\kappa _{\mathrm{halo}} = 0.20^{+0.10}_{-0.06}$|⁠. We forecast that with upcoming data from the HELIX balloon experiment, the significance could increase to 6.8σ. Adopting a coarse-graining approach, we find that such a strong suppression could be realized if the filling fraction of low-diffusion zones in the disc was |$\sim 66~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. We conclude that the impact of regions of suppressed diffusion might be larger than usually assumed and ought to be taken into account in models of Galactic CR transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present predictions for cosmic evolution of populations of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) forming from Population III.1 seeds, i.e. early, metal-free dark matter minihaloes forming far from other sources, parametrized by isolation distance, d iso. Extending previous work that explored this scenario to z  = 10, we follow evolution of a |$(60\, {\rm {Mpc}})^3$| volume to z  = 0. We focus on evolution of SMBH comoving number densities, halo occupation fractions, angular clustering, and 3D clustering, exploring a range of d iso constrained by observed local number densities of SMBHs. We also compute synthetic projected observational fields, in particular, a case comparable to the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. We compare Pop III.1 seeding to a simple halo mass threshold model, commonly adopted in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. Major predictions of the Pop III.1 model include that all SMBHs form by z ∼ 25, after which their comoving number densities are near-constant, with low merger rates. Occupation fractions evolve to concentrate SMBHs in the most massive haloes by z  = 0, but with rare cases of SMBHs in haloes down to |$\sim 10^8\, M_\odot$|⁠. The d iso scale at epoch of formation, e.g. |$100\,$| kpc-proper at z ∼ 30, i.e. |$\sim 3\,$| Mpc-comoving, is imprinted in the SMBH two-point angular correlation function, remaining discernible as a low-amplitude feature to z ∼ 1. The SMBH 3D two-point correlation function at z  = 0 also shows lower amplitude compared to equivalently massive haloes. We use Fermi-LAT data to analyse the faint gamma-ray source located at the centre of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. In the 4FGL-DR3 catalogue, this source is associated with the globular cluster, M54. We investigate the spectral energy distribution and spatial extension of this source, with the goal of testing two hypotheses: (1) the emission is due to millisecond pulsars within M54, or (2) the emission is due to annihilating dark matter from the Sgr halo. For the pulsar interpretation, we consider a two-component model which describes both the lower-energy magnetospheric emission and possible high-energy emission arising from inverse Compton scattering. We find that this source has a point-like morphology at low energies, consistent with magnetospheric emission, and find no evidence for a higher-energy component. For the dark matter interpretation, we find the signal favours a dark matter mass of m χ = 29.6 ± 5.8 GeV and an annihilation cross section of |$\sigma v = (2.1 \pm 0.59) \times 10^{-26} \, \text{cm}^3$|  s−1 for the |$b \bar{b}$| channel (or m χ = 8.3 ± 3.8 GeV and |$\sigma v = (0.90 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-26} \, \text{cm}^3$|  s−1 for the τ+τ− channel), when adopting a J -factor of |$J=10^{19.6} \, \text{GeV}^2 \, \text{cm}^{-5}$|⁠. We use high-resolution, hydrodynamic, galaxy simulations from the Latte suite of FIRE-2 simulations to investigate the inherent variation of dark matter in sub-sampled regions around the Solar Circle of a Milky Way-type analogue galaxy and its impact on direct dark matter detection. These simulations show that the baryonic back reaction, as well as the assembly history of substructures, has lasting impacts on the dark matter's spatial and velocity distributions. These are experienced as 'gusts' of dark matter wind around the Solar Circle, potentially complicating interpretations of direct detection experiments on Earth. We find that the velocity distribution function in the galactocentric frame shows strong deviations from the Maxwell Boltzmann form typically assumed in the fiducial Standard Halo Model, indicating the presence of high-velocity substructures. By introducing a new numerical integration technique that removes any dependencies on the Standard Halo Model, we generate event-rate predictions for both single-element Germanium and compound Sodium Iodide detectors, and explore how the variability of dark matter around the Solar Circle influences annual modulation signal predictions. We find that these velocity substructures contribute additional astrophysical uncertainty to the interpretation of event rates, although their impact on summary statistics, such as the peak day of annual modulation, is generally low. The γ-ray sky above a few tens of megaelectronvolts (MeV) reveals some of the most powerful and energetic phenomena of our Universe. The Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE) Gamma-ray Mission was launched in 2007 with the aim of observing celestial sources by means of three instruments covering a wide range of energies, from hard X-rays up to 30 GeV. Thanks to its wide field of view, AGILE set to observe and detect emission from pulsars, pulsar wind nebulae, gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, fast radio bursts, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, and the electromagnetic counterparts of neutrinos and gravitational waves. In particular, the fast on-ground processing and analysis chain allowed the AGILE team to promptly respond to transient events, and activate or participate in multiwavelength observing campaigns. Eventually, after 17 years of operations, the AGILE Italian scientific satellite re-entered the atmosphere on 14 February 2024, ending its intense activity as a hunter of some of the most energetic cosmic sources in the Universe that emit X and γ-rays. We will review the most relevant AGILE results to date and their impact on the advancements of theoretical models.

Context. The number of satellites launched into Earth's orbit has almost tripled in the last three years (to over 4000) due to the increasing commercialisation of space. Multiple satellite constellations, consisting of over 400 000 individual satellites, have either been partially launched or are proposed for launch in the near future. Many of these satellites are highly reflective, resulting in a high optical brightness that affects ground-based astronomical observations. Despite this caveat, the potential effect of these satellites on gamma-ray-observing Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) has largely been assumed to be negligible due to their nanosecond-scale integration times. However, this assumption has not been verified to date. Aims. As IACTs are sensitive to optical wavelength light, we aim to identify satellite trails in data taken by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) IACT array. In particular, this study is aimed at quantifying the potential effects on data quality and extensive air shower event classification and reconstruction. Methods. Using night sky background measurements from H.E.S.S., we determined which observation times and pointing directions are affected most by these satellite trails. We then evaluated their impact on the standard Hillas parameter variables used for event analysis. Results. Due to the brightest trails, false trigger events can occur, however, for most modern analyses, the effect on astronomical results will be minimal. We observe a mild increase in the rate of trail detections over time (approximately doubling in three years), which is partially correlated with the number of satellite launches. Overall, the fraction of H.E.S.S. data affected (~0.2% of dark time observations) is currently minimal. We note that these trails could still have a non-negligible effect on future Cherenkov Telescope Array observations if advanced analysis techniques designed to lower the energy threshold of the instrument are applied. The nature of the astrophysical sources responsible for producing the observed high energy neutrinos have yet to be unveiled. Choked gamma-ray bursts (CGRBs) are sources that have been proposed as being capable of generating the flux detected by IceCube, since no accompanying gamma-ray signal is expected from them, as required by observations. We focus on obtaining the neutrino flux and flavor composition corresponding to CGRBs under different assumptions for the target photon density and the magnetic field of the emission region. We consider the injection of both electrons and protons into the internal shocks of CGRBs, and using a steady-state transport equation, we account for all the relevant cooling processes. In particular, we include as a target for pγ interactions the usually adopted background of soft photons, which is a fraction of the thermalized emission originated at the shocked jet head. Additionally, we consider the synchrotron photons emitted by the electrons co-accelerated with the protons at the internal shocks in the jet. We also obtain the distribution of charged pions, kaons, and muons using the transport equation to account for the cooling effects due not only to synchrotron emission but also interactions with the soft photons in the ambient. We integrate the total diffuse flux of neutrinos of different flavors and compute the flavor ratios to be observed on Earth. As a consequence of the losses suffered mainly by pions and muons, we find these ratios to be dependent on the energy: for energies above ∼(105 − 106) GeV (depending on the magnetic field, proton-to-electron ratio, and jet power), we find that the electron flavor ratio decreases and the muon flavor ratio increases, while the tau flavor ratio increases only moderately. Our results are sensitive to the mentioned key physical parameters of the emitting region of CGRBs. Hence, the obtained flavor ratios are to be contrasted with cumulative data from ongoing and future neutrino instruments in order to assess the contribution of these sources to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos. Since the successful discovery of neutrinos, their origin is still a mystery until the association with TXS 0506+056. More messengers are achievable to study the intrinsic mechanism of extreme phenomena. Recently, Fermi-LAT Collaboration published the fourth catalogue of active galactic nuclei (4LAC), together with Data Release 2 later, including totally 3148 sources. The majority of these objects are blazars, which are classified into flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), BL Lac-type objects (BLLs), and blazars of uncertain type (BCUs) according to their optical observation feature. The BCUs take up to 38.2 per cent of total, whose classification is quite challenging and manpower consuming. However with the remarkable advances of technology, deep learning has been widely applied in astronomy. In this work, we take the advantage of 11 machine learning algorithms plus the convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning algorithm to classify BCUs based on 10 parameters and the broad-band spectral energy distribution of each object obtained with vou-blazars. On average, this method has impressive performance, reaching above 95 per cent of balanced accuracy for the training sample, best among the studies so far. We correlate the IceCube neutrinos and blazars in 4LAC, found a few possible associations. With the machine learning prediction, we later elaborate the association of these BCUs with neutrinos samples and find out most of the BCUs associated with neutrinos are with low synchrotron peak frequency, which may be due to the energy distribution of high-energy particles. The wave instability acts in astrophysical plasmas to redistribute energy and momentum in the absence of frequent collisions. There are many different types of waves, and it is important to quantify the wave energy density and growth rate for understanding what types of wave instabilities are possible in different plasma regimes. There are many situations throughout our Universe where plasmas contain a significant fraction of relativistic particles. Theoretical estimates for the wave energy density and growth rate are constrained to either field-aligned propagation angles or non-relativistic considerations. Based on linear theory, we derive the analytic expressions for the energy density and growth rate of an arbitrary resonant wave with an arbitrary propagation angle in relativistic plasmas. For this derivation, we calculate the Hermitian and anti-Hermitian parts of the relativistic-plasma dielectric tensor. We demonstrate that our analytic expression for the wave energy density presents an explicit energy increase in resonant waves in the wavenumber range where the analytic expression for the growth rate is positive (i.e. where a wave instability is driven). For this demonstration, we numerically analyse the loss-cone driven instability, as a specific example, in which the whistler-mode waves scatter relativistic electrons into the loss cone in the radiation belt. Our analytic results further develop the basis for linear theory to better understand the wave instability, and have the potential to combine with quasi-linear theory, which allows to study the time evolution of not only the particle momentum distribution function but also resonant wave properties through an instability. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) performs a systematic neutrino follow-up programme, searching for optical counterparts to high-energy neutrinos with dedicated Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) observations. Since first light in March 2018, ZTF has taken prompt observations for 24 high-quality neutrino alerts from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, with a median latency of 12.2 h from initial neutrino detection. From two of these campaigns, we have already reported tidal disruption event (TDE) AT 2019dsg and likely TDE AT 2019fdr as probable counterparts, suggesting that TDEs contribute >7.8 per cent of the astrophysical neutrino flux. We here present the full results of our programme through to December 2021. No additional candidate neutrino sources were identified by our programme, allowing us to place the first constraints on the underlying optical luminosity function of astrophysical neutrino sources. Transients with optical absolutes magnitudes brighter that −21 can contribute no more than 87 per cent of the total, while transients brighter than −22 can contribute no more than 58 per cent of the total, neglecting the effect of extinction and assuming they follow the star formation rate. These are the first observational constraints on the neutrino emission of bright populations such as superluminous supernovae. None of the neutrinos were coincident with bright optical AGN flares comparable to that observed for TXS 0506+056/IC170922A, with such optical blazar flares producing no more than 26 per cent of the total neutrino flux. Cosmic rays in star-forming galaxies are a dominant source of both diffuse γ-ray emission and ionization in gas too deeply shielded for photons to penetrate. Though the cosmic rays responsible for γ-rays and ionization are of different energies, they are produced by the same star formation-driven sources, and thus galaxies' star formation rates, γ-ray luminosities, and ionization rates should all be linked. In this paper, we use up-to-date cross-section data to determine this relationship, finding that cosmic rays in a galaxy of star formation rate |$\dot{M}_*$| and gas depletion time t dep produce a maximum primary ionization rate ζ ≈ 1 × 10−16(t dep/Gyr)−1 s−1 and a maximum γ-ray luminosity |$L_\gamma \approx 4\times 10^{39} (\dot{M}_*/\mathrm{M}_\odot \mbox{ yr}^{-1})$| erg s−1 in the 0.1–100 GeV band. These budgets imply either that the ionization rates measured in Milky Way molecular clouds include a significant contribution from local sources that elevate them above the Galactic mean, or that CR-driven ionization in the Milky Way is enhanced by sources not linked directly to star formation. Our results also imply that ionization rates in starburst systems are only moderately enhanced compared to those in the Milky Way. Finally, we point out that measurements of γ-ray luminosities can be used to place constraints on galactic ionization budgets in starburst galaxies that are nearly free of systematic uncertainties on the details of cosmic ray acceleration. Neutrino emission from-ray bursts (GRBs) has been sought for a long time, and stringent limits on the most accredited GRB emission models have been obtained from IceCube. Multiwavelength GRB observations of the last decades have improved our knowledge of the GRB emission parameters, such as the Lorentz factor and the luminosity, which can vary from one GRB to another by several orders of magnitude. Empirical correlations among such parameters have been identified during the prompt phase, with direct implications on GRB models. In this work, we use the PSLab open-access code, developed for IceCube data analyses, to search for individual neutrino emission from the prompt and afterglow phases of selected GRBs, and for stacking emission from the ensemble of such GRBs. For the afterglow phase, we focus on GRBs with X-ray flares and plateaus in particular. While past stacking searches assumed the same GRB fluence at Earth, we present a stacking scheme based on physically motivated GRB weights. Moreover, we conceive a new methodology for the prompt phase that uses the empirical correlations to infer the GRB luminosity and Lorentz factor, when redshift measurements are not available. We do not observe any significant neutrino excess. Hence, we set constraints on the GRB neutrino fluxes and on relevant GRB parameters, including the magnetic field in the jet. Context. The source population(s) of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with energies of -57 = 1018 eV (57 EeV) are still unknown and continue to be a subject of debate. The published arrival directions and energies of 303 UHECRs from the Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array enable correlations with astronomical sources. However, deflections of UHECRs in the Galactic Magnetic Field (GMF) can be considerable, especially for heavy UHECR compositions. Aims. We aim to constrain the source(s) of UHECRs by focusing on the subset of UHECRs that experience minimal deflections by the Galactic magnetic field (GMF). Methods. We used Monte Carlo simulations of UHECR trajectories in a total of eight posited GMF models (and six UHECR compositions from H to Fe) to identify two subsamples of about 40 UHECRs. The H compositions of these subsamples suffer deflections of less than a few degrees in one (or most) of the GMFs. Both the total UHECR sample and the "least-deflected" (vs. the remaining "more-deflected") subsamples of UHECRs were cross-correlated with catalogs of astronomical sources (at D. 100 Mpc) and neutrino arrival directions. Results. For H compositions, the full sample of UHECRs is most closely correlated with Cen A, nearby (<75 Mpc) radiogalaxies, and optically selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs); the least-deflected sub sample shows a most consistent correlation with nearby (D. 25 Mpc) galaxies, although some GMF models show a preference for the IceCube muon-neutrino arrival detections. For oxygen compositions, the out-of-galaxy arrival directions of least-deflected UHECRs fall on the extragalactic plane (and thus close to nearby galaxies) in many GMFs. For Fe compositions, the out-of-galaxy UHECR arrival directions typically originate in a region 30 deg offset from Cen A, except in the case of the JF12 model; this offfset can be decreased by re-scaling (by 50%) the magnitudes of the dipole and disk fields of the relevant GMFs. Context. The Crab Nebula emits exceptionally bright non-thermal radiation across the entire wavelength range from the radio to the most energetic photons. So far, the underlying physical model of a relativistic wind from the pulsar terminating in a hydrodynamic standing shock has remained fairly unchanged since the early 1970s when it was first introduced. One of the predictions of this model is an increase in the toroidal magnetic field downstream from the shock where the flow velocity drops quickly with increasing distance until it reaches its asymptotic value, matching the expansion velocity of the nebula. Aims. The magnetic field strength in the nebula is poorly known. Using the recent measurements of the spatial extension and improved spectroscopy of the gamma-ray nebula, it has become –for the first time – feasible to determine in a robust way both the strength as well as the radial dependence of the magnetic field in the downstream flow. Methods. In this work, we introduce a detailed radiative model which was used to calculate the emission from non-thermal electrons (synchrotron and inverse Compton) as well as from thermal dust present in the Crab Nebula in a self-consistent way to compare it quantitatively with observational data. Special care was given to the radial dependence of the electron and seed field density. Results. The radiative model was used to estimate the parameters related to the electron populations responsible for radio and optical/X-ray synchrotron emission. In this context, the mass of cold and warm dust was determined. A combined fit based upon a χ2 minimisation successfully reproduced the complete data set used. For the best-fitting model, the energy density of the magnetic field dominates over the particle energy density up to a distance of ≈1.3 rs (rs: distance of the termination shock from the pulsar). The very high energy (VHE: E > 100 GeV) and ultra-high energy (UHE: E > 100 TeV) gamma-ray spectra set the strongest constraints on the radial dependence of the magnetic field, favouring a model where B(r) = (264 ± 9) μG(r/rs)−0.51 ± 0.03. For a collection of VHE measurements during epochs of higher hard X-ray emission, a significantly different solution B(r) = (167 ± 5) μG(r/rs)−0.29(+0.03, −0.06) is found. Conclusions. The high energy (HE: E > 100 MeV) and VHE gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula lift the degeneracy of the synchrotron emission between particle and magnetic field energy density. The reconstructed magnetic field and its radial dependence indicates a ratio of Poynting to kinetic energy flux σ ≈ 0.1 at the termination shock, which is ≈30 times larger than estimated up to now. Consequently, the confinement of the nebula would require additional mechanisms to slow the flow down through, for example, excitation of small-scale turbulence with possible dissipation of the magnetic field. Around one-third of the point-like sources in the Fermi-LAT catalogues remain as unidentified sources (unIDs) today. Indeed, these unIDs lack a clear, univocal association with a known astrophysical source. If dark matter (DM) is composed of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), there is the exciting possibility that some of these unIDs may actually be DM sources, emitting gamma-rays from WIMPs annihilation. We propose a new approach to solve the standard, machine learning (ML) binary classification problem of disentangling prospective DM sources (simulated data) from astrophysical sources (observed data) among the unIDs of the 4FGL Fermi-LAT catalogue. We artificially build two systematic features for the DM data which are originally inherent to observed data: the detection significance and the uncertainty on the spectral curvature. We do it by sampling from the observed population of unIDs, assuming that the DM distributions would, if any, follow the latter. We consider different ML models: Logistic Regression, Neural Network (NN), Naive Bayes, and Gaussian Process, out of which the best, in terms of classification accuracy, is the NN, achieving around |$93.3{{\ \rm per\ cent}} \pm 0.7{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| performance. Other ML evaluation parameters, such as the True Negative and True Positive rates, are discussed in our work. Applying the NN to the unIDs sample, we find that the degeneracy between some astrophysical and DM sources can be partially solved within this methodology. None the less, we conclude that there are no DM source candidates among the pool of 4FGL Fermi-LAT unIDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Igneous processes were quite widespread in the small bodies of the Solar System (SBSS) and were initially fueled by short-lived radioisotopes, the proto-Sun, impact heating, and differentiation heating. Once they finished, long-lived radioisotopes continued to warm the active bodies of the Earth, (possibly) Venus, and the cryovolcanism of Enceladus.The widespread presence of olivine and pyroxenes in planets and also in SBSS suggests that they were not necessarily the product of igneous processes and they might have been recycled from previous nebular processes or entrained in comets from interstellar space. The difference in temperature between the inner and the outer Solar System has clearly favored thermal annealing of the olivine close to the proto-Sun. Transport of olivine within the Solar System probably occurred also due to protostellar jets and winds but the entrainment in SBSS from interstellar space would overcome the requirement of initial turbulent regime in the protoplanetary nebula.

The alpha magnetic spectrometer (AMS) is a high-precision particle detector onboard the International Space Station containing six different subdetectors. The transition radiation detector and electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) are used to separate electrons/positrons from the abundant cosmic-ray proton background. The positron flux measured in space by AMS falls with a power law which unexpectedly softens above 25 GeV and then hardens above 280 GeV. Several theoretical models try to explain these phenomena, and a more accurate measurement of positrons at higher energies is needed to help test them. The currently used methods to reject the proton background at high energies involve extrapolating shower features from the ECAL to use as inputs for boosted decision tree and likelihood classifiers. We present a new approach for particle identification with the AMS ECAL using deep learning (DL). By taking the energy deposition within all the ECAL cells as an input and treating them as pixels in an image-like format, we train an MLP, a CNN, and multiple ResNets and convolutional vision transformers (CvTs) as shower classifiers. Proton rejection performance is evaluated using Monte Carlo (MC) events and ISS data separately. For MC, using events with a reconstructed energy between 0.2–2 TeV, at 90% electron accuracy, the proton rejection power of our CvT model is more than five times that of the other DL models. Similarly, for ISS data with a reconstructed energy between 50–70 GeV, the proton rejection power of our CvT model is more than 2.5 times that of the other DL models.

The Andromeda galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to us and has been the subject of numerous studies. It harbors a massive dark matter halo, which may span up to ~600 kpc across and comprises ~90% of the galaxy's total mass. This halo size translates into a large diameter of 42° on the sky, for an M31-Milky Way (MW) distance of 785 kpc, but its presumably low surface brightness makes it challenging to detect with γ-ray telescopes. Using 7.6 yr of Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) observations, we make a detailed study of the γ-ray emission between 1-100 GeV toward M31's outer halo, with a total field radius of 60° centered at M31, and perform an in-depth analysis of the systematic uncertainties related to the observations. We use the cosmic-ray propagation code GALPROP to construct specialized interstellar emission models to characterize the foreground γ-ray emission from the MW, including a self-consistent determination of the isotropic component. We find evidence for an extended excess that appears to be distinct from the conventional MW foreground, having a total radial extension upward of ~120-200 kpc from the center of M31. We discuss plausible interpretations of the excess emission, but emphasize that uncertainties in the MW foreground-and in particular, modeling of the H i-related components-have not been fully explored and may impact the results.

In order to identify the sources of the observed diffuse high-energy neutrino flux, it is crucial to discover their electromagnetic counterparts. To increase the sensitivity of detecting counterparts of transient or variable sources by telescopes with a limited field of view, IceCube began releasing alerts for single high-energy (Eνâ> â60 TeV) neutrino detections with sky localisation regions of order 1° radius in 2016. We used Pan-STARRS1 to follow-up five of these alerts during 2016-2017 to search for any optical transients that may be related to the neutrinos. Typically 10-20 faint (miP1âââ22.5 mag) extragalactic transients are found within the Pan-STARRS1 footprints and are generally consistent with being unrelated field supernovae (SNe) and AGN. We looked for unusual properties of the detected transients, such as temporal coincidence of explosion epoch with the IceCube timestamp, or other peculiar light curve and physical properties. We found only one transient that had properties worthy of a specific follow-up. In the Pan-STARRS1 imaging for IceCube-160427A (probability to be of astrophysical origin of ∼50%), we found a SN PS16cgx, located at 10.0′ from the nominal IceCube direction. Spectroscopic observations of PS16cgx showed that it was an H-poor SN at redshift zâ=â0.2895â ±â 0.0001. The spectra and light curve resemble some high-energy Type Ic SNe, raising the possibility of a jet driven SN with an explosion epoch temporally coincident with the neutrino detection. However, distinguishing Type Ia and Type Ic SNe at this redshift is notoriously difficult. Based on all available data we conclude that the transient is more likely to be a Type Ia with relatively weak Siâ» II absorption and a fairly normal rest-frame r-band light curve. If, as predicted, there is no high-energy neutrino emission from Type Ia SNe, then PS16cgx must be a random coincidence, and unrelated to the IceCube-160427A. We find no other plausible optical transient for any of the five IceCube events observed down to a 5σ limiting magnitude of miP1â≈â22 mag, between 1 day and 25 days after detection.

We present the first full-sky analysis of the cosmic ray arrival direction distribution with data collected by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov and IceCube observatories in the northern and southern hemispheres at the same median primary particle energy of 10 TeV. The combined sky map and angular power spectrum largely eliminate biases that result from partial sky coverage and present a key to probe into the propagation properties of TeV cosmic rays through our local interstellar medium and the interaction between the interstellar and heliospheric magnetic fields. From the map, we determine the horizontal dipole components of the anisotropy δ 0h = 9.16 ×10-4 and δ 6h = 7.25 ×10-4 (±0.04 × 10-4). In addition, we infer the direction (229.°2 ± 3.°5 R.A., 11.°4 ± 3.°0 decl.) of the interstellar magnetic field from the boundary between large-scale excess and deficit regions from which we estimate the missing corresponding vertical dipole component of the large-scale anisotropy to be δN ∼ -3.97+1.0-2.0 × 10-4.

Extreme high-frequency peaked BL Lacs (EHBLs) are characterized by a synchrotron peak frequency exceeding 1017 Hz and a second peak that can be in the energy range of few GeVs to several TeVs. The Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescope (MAGIC) detected multi-TeV gamma-rays on 2018 April 19 for the first time from the EHBL PGC 2402248, which was simultaneously observed in multiwavelength by several other instruments. The broad-band spectral energy distribution of the source is conventionally modelled using the leptonic and the hadronic models. Due to the success of the photohadronic model in interpreting the enigmatic very high energy (VHE) flaring events from many high-energy blazars, we extend this model to explain the VHE events from PGC 2402248 observed by MAGIC telescopes and compare our results with other models. We conclude that the photohadronic fits are comparable and even fare better than most other models. Furthermore, we show that the spectrum is not hard and is in a low-emission state. The estimated bulk Lorentz factor for this flaring event is found to be ≲34. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
