No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-10-01 The Tocantins-Araguaia Basin is one of the largest river systems in South America, located entirely within Brazilian territory. In the last decades, capital-concentrating activities such as agribusiness, mining, and hydropower promoted extensive changes in land cover, hydrology, and environmental conditions. These changes are jeopardizing the basin’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. Threats are escalating as poor environmental policies continue to be formulated, such as environmentally unsustainable hydropower plants, large-scale agriculture for commodity production, and aquaculture with non-native fish. If the current model persists, it will deepen the environmental crisis in the basin, compromising broad conservation goals and social development in the long term. Better policies will require thought and planning to minimize growing threats and ensure the basin’s sustainability for future generations. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 The construction of four large reservoirs for hydroelectric power generation in the main channel of the Paraná River and many others in the tributaries has eliminated important wetlands, except over an area of ∼2000 km2 between the reservoirs of the UHE Engenheiro Sérgio Motta (Porto Primavera) and the Itaipu. The up-river reservoirs created large changes in the river's hydrology and in its loads of suspended, bed and dissolved material. A detailed assessment of the impact of these changes requires a description and classification of the floodplain's different subunits, called macrohabitats, according to hydrological, hydromorphological, and vegetational parameters. The classification system presented herein is hierarchical and is embedded in the classifications of Brazilian wetlands. The system differentiates the Paraná River floodplain into 6 functional units, 13 subclasses, and 23 macrohabitats, which are presented in this paper. Changes in hydrology have reduced the flood amplitude, frequency and permanence, and thus confined the macrohabitats to an area currently subjected to a regular flood pulse of ∼3 m rather than the previous ∼6 m. The gradual terrestrialization of macrohabitats at the upper end of the flood gradient is expected, accompanied by a loss of macrohabitats at its lower end because of long-term flooding. The retention of sediments and dissolved nutrients in the reservoirs will lead to the oligotrophication of aquatic macrohabitats, the degradation of near-channel hydromorphic structures and their vegetation, and a general reduction of overall primary production in the floodplain, which may extend also to higher trophic levels. Ichthyoplankton drift is threatened by hydropower dams elsewhere. Here we evaluated whether eggs and larvae of fish can perform downstream movements along a large reservoir in a white-water river on the Amazon. Samplings were performed in the reservoir and downstream from Santo Antonio dam. Generalized linear models with negative binomial distribution and logarithmic link function were fitted to model the ichthyoplankton drift throughout the reservoir. Six different models were fitted having the abundances of ichthyoplankton as the response variable. The linear predictor differed as to the inclusion of the predictor variables larval development stage, sampling sites and dam distance (linear and quadratic effect). All ichthyoplankton and the most representative taxonomic orders were analyzed. The results indicate that fish reproductive activity occurred both upstream Jirau Dam and within the Santo Antonio Reservoir. Some part of the ichthyoplankton transposed the Santo Antonio Dam, reaching downstream. However, all of the taxonomic orders presented both reproductive activity and disappearance of at least some of their larval development stages along the reservoir. The most critical section was in the last 10 km of the reservoir, possibly as result of the drifting characteristics or of mortality rates.

We evaluated the association between the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), an important climatic phenomenon on Earth, with water level variation and fish assemblage attributes (i.e., abundance, species richness and structure of the assemblage) of the Parana (dammed) and Ivinhema (undammed) rivers, located in the upper Parana River floodplain, Brazil. Cross-Correlation Function analyses were performed using the Oceanic Nino Index (ONI; which indexed ENSO events) as the influential time series on water level and fish assemblage attributes time series. ONI were positively associated with water level and with most of the fish assemblage attributes tested, but these patterns differed between the two rivers. This indicates that El Nino events affect the structure of the fish assemblages, mainly in the Ivinhema River, which presented more assemblage attributes associated with ONI. In addition, dams may play a regulatory effect over the water level of the Parana River, which probably explains the different patterns of assemblage attributes in both rivers. Thus, ENSO events are associated with the composition and structure of the fish assemblages in the studied area, and their effects are apparently minimized in the Parana River due to the presence of upstream dams.

We aimed to study the responses of fish functional diversity to El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in different environments from the upper Parana River floodplain (UPRF), Brazil. We predicted that (i) El Nino events intensify floods in the UPRF and, consequently, promote functional convergence of the fish assemblage and (ii) different functional traits will be favored in El Nino or La Nina events. The functional convergence was measured through functional dispersion and functional redundancy indexes, wherein lakes presented higher similarity during El Nino and lower similarity during La Nina. ENSO did not have a strong effect in rivers. The functional richness and functional evenness did not respond to ENSO events. Fish with parental care and invertivorous fish were favored during El Nino, while piscivorous and herbivorous fish were favored during La Nina. Due to their distinct lifecycles, long-distance migratory fish responded to this climatic oscillation 1 year after El Nino. Overall, the influence of ENSO on fish diversity in the UPRF is a complex phenomenon. However, even with other local and regional factors acting on the ichthyofauna, fish diversity responded to these climatic fluctuations.

Biodiversity, biological traits of potential host species, and environmental conditions may mediate the emergence of new diseases. We assessed the relative influence of such factors on patterns of infection by Austrodiplostomum compactum (Digenea, Diplostomidae) in fish assemblages of the Upper Parana River floodplain, Brazil. Multiple infection parameters were modeled at the community and species levels using phylogenetic diversity (PD), abundance (total and for a main reservoir species Plagioscion squamosissimus), local environmental conditions and phylogenetic distance from P. squamosissimus (Dis_Plag). In total, 108 fish species were collected and 28 were infected. At the community level, mean parasite abundance and mean infection intensity were positively associated with PD and the interaction between PD and environmental conditions, whereas host richness was negatively associated with PD. The complementary results indicate a biodiversity sampling effect rather than dilution effect. Environmental conditions often had the strongest coefficients in community-level models and mediated associations between infection parameters and other factors. At the species level, consistent negative associations between infection parameters and Dis_Plag indicate phylogenetic niche conservatism of parasites. Integration of community and species-level analyses demonstrates that phylogenetic diversity can affect host–parasite interactions in multiple ways, but that the associations depend on phylogenetic relationships and environmental conditions.

Environmental characteristics of an invaded environment can predict the invasion success of a species, depending on its habits and life strategies. Cichla kelberi is a visual and voracious predator introduced in the Upper Parana River floodplain, an area that suffers with several upstream dams that caused many environmental changes over the years (e.g. increased water transparency). As this species is a pre-adapted species to environments that presents high water transparency, our main goal was to test the hypothesis that variables related to the underwater visibility would be important drivers of the successful invasion of C. kelberi in the Upper Parana River floodplain. We predict that turbidity (proxy of water transparency) is one of the major limnological determinants of occurrence and abundance of C. kelberi. Individuals of the invasive species and seven limnological variables were sampled quarterly between February 2000 and November 2018. This long-term data is part of the sixth site of the Brazilian Long Term Ecological Program (PELD). We fitted two regression models to all occurrence and abundance data (response variables) against the limnological variables (explanatory variables). For occurrence data, we fitted a Generalized Linear Mixed Model and for abundance data, we fitted a Linear Mixed Effects Model. The occurrence data of C. kelberi showed that turbidity and dissolved oxygen were the variables that most influenced the presence of this species, negatively and positively, respectively. The abundance data showed that dissolved oxygen and concentration of chlorophyll-a were the ones that most influenced the abundance of this species, negatively and positively, respectively. Our findings showed that besides turbidity, other limnological variables were also determinants for the occurrence and abundance of C. kelberi . Therefore, our results provided important information about the main environmental drivers of the establishment process of C. kelberi in the Upper Parana River floodplain.

Body size is a trait that results from evolutionary and ecological processes. Body size not only provides information on the physical condition of individuals but also on the shift in community structure across space and time. Here, we aimed to investigate whether the body size of the migratory fishes changed over time and to ascertain the abiotic variables explaining these changes; and whether the effect on body size was different between fish in dammed (Parana River) and undammed (Ivinhema River) rivers. Using a temporal series (1986 - 2018) and linear mixed effects models, we evaluated the effects of the abiotic variables on the standard length of the fish species from a floodplain system. We found that fish body size tended to decrease; the mean body length had decreased by 25 % since 2000. Abiotic variables related to seasonal variability (water level) and those affected by reservoir operation (water transparency and nutrients) explained the decrease in body size. Our results highlighted that larger migratory fish were found in the undammed river in lower transparency habitats.

In the upper Paraná River floodplain, the populations of Salminus brasiliensis have been subjected to several anthropic impacts, such as overfishing, the blocking of migratory routes by dams, and regulation of the flood regime. Its populations have disappeared or become depleted in most rivers in this basin. These populations are the target of protection measures aimed at restoring them. This study evaluated the abundance of this species in the upper Paraná River floodplain over a 26-year time series in sites under different degrees of protection. Despite the overall decrease in the abundance of S. brasiliensis across the region, the less impacted sites have higher abundances and exhibited a slower decline in the probability of occurrence. Over time, populations in less impacted sites also exhibited improved fish condition. Some protected areas in the upper Paraná River have had a mitigation effect by lowering the velocity of population decline and representing a constant source of propagule production for other areas. Our results reinforce the notion that populations threatened with low abundances take a long time to effectively recover their stocks. Thus, besides evaluating species conservation strategies, long-term studies are essential to subsidize management measures, such as fisheries regulations. Resumo Na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, as populações de Salminus brasiliensis têm sido submetidas a diversos impactos antrópicos, como sobrepesca, bloqueio de suas rotas migratórias por barragens e regulação do regime de cheias. Essas populações desapareceram ou se esgotaram na maioria dos rios dessa bacia, sendo alvo de medidas de proteção para restaurá-las. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a abundância da espécie na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná ao longo da série temporal de 26 anos em locais sob diferentes graus de proteção. Apesar da diminuição geral na abundância de S. brasiliensis em toda a região, os locais menos impactados possuem maiores abundâncias e exibiram um declínio mais lento na probabilidade de ocorrência. Com o tempo, as populações em locais menos impactados apresentaram aumento na condição dos peixes. Algumas áreas de proteção no alto rio Paraná têm efeito mitigador, diminuindo a velocidade de declínio populacional, representando fonte de propágulos para as demais áreas. Nossos resultados reforçam a ideia de que populações ameaçadas com baixas abundâncias levam muito tempo para recuperar seus estoques. Assim, além de avaliar as estratégias de conservação das espécies, estudos de longo prazo são essenciais para subsidiar medidas de manejo, como a regulamentação da pesca.

Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of protected areas (PAs) in the Paraná-Paraguay basin on multiple facets of ichthyofauna, both currently and in future climate change scenarios, based on reaching the 17% of conserved terrestrial and inland water defined by Aichi Target 11. Analyses were carried out vis-à-vis a distribution of 496 native species, modeling for the present and for the future, and in moderate and pessimistic scenarios of greenhouse gases. We calculated species richness, functional richness, and phylogenetic diversity, overlapping the combination of these facets with the PAs. The results indicate that the current PAs of the Paraná-Paraguay basin are not efficient in protecting the richest areas of ichthyofauna in their multiple facets. While there is a larger overlap between PAs and the richest areas in phylogenetic diversity, the values are too low (2.37%). Currently, the overlap between PAs and areas with larger species richness, functional richness, and phylogenetic diversity is only 1.48%. Although this value can increase for future projections, the values of the indices decrease substantially. The relevant aquatic environments, biological communities, and climate change should be considered as part of the systematic planning of PAs that take into consideration the terrestrial environments and their threats. Resumo Nosso objetivo foi avaliar a efetividade das áreas protegidas da bacia Paraná-Paraguai sobre múltiplas facetas da ictiofauna, atualmente e em cenários futuros de mudanças climáticas baseado em alcançar 17% de áreas protegidas, de acordo com os objetivos de Aichi. Análises foram feitas a partir da distribuição de 496 espécies para o presente e futuro, em diferentes cenários climáticos. Foram calculadas a riqueza de espécies, a riqueza funcional e a diversidade filogenética, sobrepondo a combinação destas facetas com as áreas protegidas. Os resultados indicaram que as áreas protegidas da bacia Paraná-Paraguai não são eficientes em proteger as áreas mais ricas em ictiofauna considerando diversas facetas. A maior sobreposição se dá entre as áreas protegidas e as áreas mais ricas em diversidade filogenética, mas os valores são muito baixos (2,37%). A sobreposição entre as áreas protegidas e os 17% das áreas com maior riqueza de espécies, riqueza funcional e diversidade filogenética é de apenas 1,48%. Para o futuro as projeções indicaram que a sobreposição pode aumentar, mas os valores dos índices caem consideravelmente. Os ambientes aquáticos e as mudanças climáticas são componentes que devem ser considerados no planejamento sistemático de áreas protegidas que consideram essencialmente ambientes terrestres e suas ameaças.

The introduction of non-native predators is a matter of great concern, but their impacts on ecosystem functions remain poorly understood. We investigated how changes in fish diversity following the invasion of Cichla kelberi affected ecosystem functions generated by fish populations. Fish assemblages were sampled in macrophyte patches in a Neotropical impoundment over a 5-year period, before and after the introduction of the predator. We assigned seven ecosystem functions (26 trait-states) to each fish species, and examined how these functions behaved after the invasion. We collected 577 fish belonging to 25 species. Species richness, fish biomass and main species declined significantly over periods. The biomass of ecosystem functions changed significantly over time, and most trait-states declined. Few trait-states were lost, but all functions had at least one trait-state reduced by more than 85%. A null model analysis showed that changes in functions were not driven by species identities, while species richness correlated positively with total biomass and with most functions, suggesting that the loss of taxa and biomass drove observed changes in ecosystem functions. Our study provided evidence that community disassembly associated with the invasion of C. kelberi translated to the decline of several ecosystem functions, affecting energy mobilization and transference. Resumo A introdução de predadores não-nativos tem gerado grande preocupação, mas seus impactos sobre a geração de funções ecossistêmicas permanecem pouco investigados. O presente estudo investigou como mudanças na diversidade de peixes, associadas com a invasão de Cichla kelberi, afetaram funções ecossistêmicas geradas por populações de peixes. As assembleias de peixes foram amostradas em bancos de macrófitas em um grande reservatório Neotropical durante um período de cinco anos, antes e depois da introdução do predador. Um conjunto de funções ecossistêmicas (26 trait-states) foi atribuído a cada espécie de peixe, e examinamos como as funções se comportaram depois da invasão. Foram coletados 577 peixes pertencentes a 25 espécies. Registramos declínio significativo da riqueza de espécies, biomassa total e biomassa das principais espécies ao longo dos períodos. A biomassa das funções ecossistêmicas mudou significativamente ao longo do tempo, e a maioria dos trait-states declinou. Poucos trait-states foram perdidos, mas todas as funções tiveram pelo menos um trait-state reduzido em mais de 85%. Uma análise de modelos nulos mostrou que as mudanças nas funções não foram impulsionadas pela identidade das espécies, enquanto que a riqueza de espécies correlacionou positivamente com a biomassa total e com a maioria das funções, sugerindo que a perda de espécies e biomassa impulsionou as mudanças observadas nas funções ecossistêmicas. Nosso estudo apresenta evidências de que a desestruturação da comunidade, associada com a invasão de C. kelberi, se traduziu no declínio de várias funções ecossistêmicas, afetando a mobilização e transferência de energia.

Mining activities have significantly affected the Neotropical freshwater ichthyofauna, the most diverse in the world. However, no study has systematized knowledge on the subject. In this review, we assembled information on the main impacts of mining of crude oil, gold, iron, copper, and bauxite on aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing Neotropical freshwater fishes. The information obtained shows that mining activities generate several different disturbances, mainly via input of crude oil, metals and other pollutants, erosion and siltation, deforestation, and road construction. Mining has resulted in direct and indirect losses of fish diversity in several Neotropical waterbodies. The negative impacts on the ichthyofauna may change the structure of communities, compromise entire food chains, and erode ecosystem services provided by freshwater fishes. Particularly noteworthy is that mining activities (legal and illegal) are widespread in the Neotropics, and often located within or near protected areas. Actions to prevent and mitigate impacts, such as inspection, monitoring, management, and restoration plans, have been cursory or absent. In addition, there is strong political pressure to expand mining; if – or when – this happens, it will increase the potential of the activity to further diminish the diversity of Neotropical freshwater fishes. Resumo As atividades de mineração têm impactado significativamente a ictiofauna de água doce Neotropical, a mais diversa do mundo. Porém, nenhum estudo sistematizou o conhecimento sobre o assunto. Nesta revisão, reunimos informações sobre os principais impactos da mineração de petróleo, ouro, ferro, cobre, e bauxita sobre os ecossistemas aquáticos, com ênfase nos peixes de água doce Neotropicais. As informações obtidas mostram que as atividades de mineração geram diferentes distúrbios, principalmente por meio de petróleo bruto, metais e outros poluentes, erosão e assoreamento, desmatamento e construção de estradas. A mineração resultou em perda direta e indireta de diversidade de peixes de vários corpos d’água Neotropicais. Os impactos negativos sobre a ictiofauna podem alterar a estrutura das comunidades, comprometer cadeias alimentares inteiras, bem como degradar os serviços ecossistêmicos fornecidos pelos peixes de água doce. Particularmente importante é que as atividades de mineração (legais e ilegais) são generalizadas na região Neotropical, e frequentemente estão localizadas dentro ou perto de áreas protegidas. Ações de prevenção e mitigação de impactos, como planos de fiscalização, monitoramento, manejo e restauração, têm sido precárias ou ausentes. Além disso, há forte pressão política para expandir a mineração; se – ou quando – isso acontecer, aumentará o potencial da atividade em diminuir ainda mais a diversidade de peixes de água doce Neotropicais.

Invasive alien species are one of the main components of global ecological change, the second known cause of animal extinctions, and very costly in terms of ecosystem services. Invasive alien species and damming are two of the most impacting alterations in freshwater ecosystems, and understanding the processes that govern biological invasions in these habitats is of enormous conceptual and practical importance. About 39 competing and overlapping hypotheses have been proposed in invasion biology that have been recently grouped in four (or five) concept clusters, namely the: propagule, resource availability, biotic interaction and Darwin’s clusters. We analyzed the relative importance of three of these concept clusters in Neotropical fish assemblages, using data from 29 reservoirs and variation partitioning analyses. We show that alien fish assemblages respond to variation in limnological characteristics in a way similar than native species, usually with positive effects of increased temperature, conductivity and chlorophyll-a concentration and decreasing turbidity. Overall, we found support for some hypotheses included in resource availability and Darwin’s clusters, such as increased resource availability and biotic acceptance, and no evidence of strong biotic resistance, marked effects of human disturbance, as measured by land-use changes, or propagule/colonization pressures. We discuss the potential reasons and management implications of these findings. Albeit massive fish mortality has an extraordinary visual impact and is certainly a fatality, we still have rudimentary understanding on how addressing this problem in the Neotropical region. The processes that lead to fish die-off events are complex and sometimes ephemeral, which can lead to incorrect diagnosis. In this review, we discuss these events in Neotropical freshwaters, both in areas impacted by dams and natural environment, with a focus on deaths mediated by the lack of oxygen (anoxia) or the excess of dissolved gases (gas supersaturation). We examine the available knowledge about the related mechanisms, lethal thresholds for dissolved oxygen (DO) and total dissolved gases (TDG) for fish, and the sequelae of gas bubble disease (GBD). An assessment of the main mortality events in Brazil in the last 10 years is also presented, as well as the best practices for monitoring, prevention, and mitigation. Finally, it is concluded that the proliferation of hydroelectric plants in the Neotropical region might contribute to the expansion of these events and, consequently, increasing of impacts on fish conservation. We consider urgent the inclusion of this topic in the licensing processes for new hydropower projects by the environmental agencies. Resumo Embora mortandades massivas de peixes tenham impacto visual extraordinário e sejam certamente uma fatalidade, estamos ainda engatinhando no entendimento e na solução desse problema. Os processos que levam aos eventos de mortes de peixes são complexos e algumas vezes efêmeros, o que explica diagnoses incorretas. Nessa revisão nós discutimos esses eventos em bacias hidrográficas neotropicais, tanto em barragens como em ambientes naturais, porém com o foco nas mortes por falta de oxigênio (anoxia) ou excesso de gases dissolvidos (supersaturação gasosa). Em particular são examinados o conhecimento disponível acerca dos processos que levam a essas condições, os limiares letais de oxigênio dissolvido (OD) e gases totais dissolvidos (GTD) para os peixes e as sequelas da doença das bolhas de gás (DBG). Uma avaliação dos principais eventos de mortandade que ocorreram no Brasil nos últimos 10 anos é também apresentada, bem como discutidas as melhores práticas para o monitoramento, prevenção e mitigação. Conclui-se, finalmente, que a proliferação de hidrelétricas deve contribuir com a expansão desses eventos e consequentemente com mais um fator de ameaça à biodiversidade. Consideramos urgente a inclusão desse tema nos processos de licenciamento de novos empreendimentos pelo órgão ambiental.

The flood pulse is the main driving force for communities' structure and functioning in river-floodplain systems. High synchrony exists between the hydrological cycle and reproductive cycle events for several fish species. However, species with different reproductive strategies can respond in different ways to the flood regime. Thus, this study intends to evaluate the relationship between the recruitment of different reproductive guilds of freshwater fish and flood attributes (flood duration, maximum annual water level, and delay of flood) from a time series of 20 years in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. The abundance of four guilds was evaluated: (i) long-distance migratory with external fertilization and without parental care (LMEF); (ii) non-migratory or short-distance migratory with external fertilization and without parental care (NEFW); (iii) non-migratory or short-distance migratory with external fertilization and parental care (NEFP); and (iv) non-migratory or short-distance migratory with internal fertilization and without parental care (NIF). Multiple regression analyses were applied between flood attributes and abundance of young-of-the-year or juveniles for each reproductive guild. This study observed a consistent pattern of long-lasting flooding positively influencing the recruitment of all reproductive guilds, while water level intensity and the time of the onset of flooding also influenced some non-migratory strategies. We can conclude that the conservation of fish populations and the maintenance of ecosystem functions and services associated with them need to be considered in the operating protocols of upstream hydroelectric plants, since they are dependent on the flooding controlled by them.

We assessed the climate change effects on the geographical distribution of Salminus brasiliensis, a keystone species of economic interest in the La Plata River basin. Using ecological niche models, we estimated the species range in the present time and assessed the range shift phenomena through climatically suitable areas in the future. We also quantified the predictive uncertainty from niche models, atmosphere–ocean general circulation models, and carbon emission scenarios. Our predictions indicated a great range contraction of S. brasiliensis in the future. The south-central portion of the basin should retain the climate refuge function for the species at 2050. Nonetheless, the segregation of this climate refuge in two smaller parts was predicted at the end of the century. Our study also revealed that the greatest source of uncertainty in forecasts of species range shifts arises from using alternative niche algorithms in modeling process. Our results contribute to more effective measures for conservation of S. brasiliensis, thus helping to ensure the ecosystem processes and socioeconomic activities in the basin dependent on this species. The enormous biodiversity of tropical freshwater combined with a considerable increase in the construction of reservoirs urges to understand the ecological effects caused by damming. Using rarely available data obtained before (one year) and after (four years) the filling of a hydroelectric plant on the Teles Pires River (Amazon River basin), the effects on abundance, biomass, and diversity of the fish assemblage were evaluated using two complementary approaches: a BACI (before-after-control-impact) design with mixed models and analyses of covariance. Significant Before-After × Control-Impact interactions in abundance, biomass, and species richness were observed, with decreases of abundance and species richness and more stable biomass after filling. Some abundant species, such as Jupiaba polylepis, Jupiaba acanthogaster, Knodus cf. heteresthes, and Moenkhausia lepidura among others, declined in abundance or disappeared from the impact sites. However, temporal and particularly spatial variation independent of damming explained more variation in all the response variables analyzed, including species composition, and analyses of covariance demonstrated general negative trends irrespective of damming. This study illustrates the usefulness of BACI designs to assess the effects of damming but also that other statistical approaches are complementary, given the difficulty of identifying control sites and the short length of most ecological time series. Despite the increased use as tool for conservation of native fish, the creation of non-fishing reserves is more recent in Neotropical impoundments and its effectiveness rather variable. Although not intentionally created for conservation purposes, areas located near dams could function as fish reserves, since fishing activity is often forbidden in these sites for security reasons. We investigated the effects of a fishing-restricted area in Lajes Reservoir, a Neotropical reservoir dominated by invasive species, notably the yellow peacock bass Cichla kelberi, subject to intensive local fisheries. Cichlid populations associated with rocky banks of similar size and complexity were compared between fishing and non-fishing sites, after accounting for spatial autocorrelation. Native cichlids were significantly less abundant in the non-fishing area, in contrast to invasive cichlids. Accordingly, there were smaller individuals of the two native species in the fishing-allowed sites, where the mean size of peacock bass was also smaller. Our results suggest that angling can sometimes provide demographical control of large invasive piscivores and hence predation refuges for native fish in highly modified ecosystems such as reservoirs, thus resulting in reconciliation ecology. Fishing prohibition can sometimes be counterproductive for the conservation of native populations, illustrating the importance of context-specific management strategies.

Dams have altered the physiography and ecology of large rivers, causing severe environmental changes at a global scale. Assuming that series of reservoirs induce physical, chemical, and biological longitudinal changes in rivers, we tested the hypotheses that (i) the structure of biological communities in reservoir cascades is not only affected by changes in water quality, but also by cumulative hydrological alteration and impacts on river connectivity; and (ii) fish are more affected by cumulative effects of reservoirs when compared to other aquatic assemblages. Samplings of three assemblages (phytoplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish) were conducted in the reservoir cascade of Sao Francisco River, Brazil. We estimated the relative role of environmental and spatial predictors through variation partitioning analyses. Environmental variables, cumulative reservoir volume, longitudinal position, and distances from nearest reservoirs were used as explanatory variables. Environmental variables were the most important for the phytoplankton community. No significant effects of the predictors used were found for benthic macroinvertebrates, whereas spatial variables and cumulative reservoir volume were the most important predictors for fish. Therefore, our results provide evidence of impacts along reservoir cascades, and suggest that their effects mainly influence fish assemblages.

We assessed the relationships among native and introduced fish species richness and a set of explanatory variables, including area, altitude, reservoir age, temperature, human influence index and fish abundance. We expected to find different relationships based on species origin (i.e., native or introduced). Based on compiled data from Brazilian reservoirs, we modeled the variation in the number of native and introduced fish species by generalized linear mixed models with different spatial autocorrelation structures. Reservoirs located in warmer regions and with higher fish abundance showed higher species richness of both native and introduced fish. Reservoir age tended to be negatively correlated with native species richness. Our results suggest that reservoir communities in warmer regions may be more resistant to local extinctions caused by impoundments, but they are more susceptible to species introductions. Our results also highlight that an extinction debt can be expected for native species because older reservoirs showed lower native species richness.

The invasion of tilapia can result in substantial impacts on native communities. Thus, understanding the spatial dynamics of invasions may help prevent future introductions and mitigate impacts. This study estimated the environmentally suitable areas for occurrence of eight tilapia species (genera Coptodon, Oreochromis, Pelmatolapia, and Sarotherodon) in the Americas and their invasive potential using Ecological Niche Models (ENMs). The United States is the most invaded country, receiving all tilapia species. In South America, the southeast and south regions of Brazil are highlighted as the areas where two species are concentrated. The ENMs predicted that all tilapia species have high invasive potential in the Americas, and despite having more tilapias in North America, South and Central Americas are more susceptible to tilapia invasion. All South American basins were predicted to harbor tilapia species that have not yet arrived on the subcontinent. Our study evidences the need to implement management measures and governmental policies in the Americas to deal with problems caused by tilapia introductions. In North America, the focus is on the control of tilapia populations and in Central and South America priority should be given to contention of introduction processes.

This study assessed the feeding strategies of nine fish species in their native (Cuiaba River) and in an invaded basin (upper Parana River) to identify trophic variables that may explain the success of these species in the new basin, over 30 years. The following predictions were analyzed: (i) species that display omnivorous or piscivorous diets in the native basin are favored in the invasion process over the long term, and (ii) specialist feeders are favored in the invasion process provided that their food items are highly available in the invaded area. These predictions were supported by the data; the species that were successful invaders had high trophic plasticity (omnivores), consumed a wide variety of food items from specific trophic guilds (piscivores), or if a species had a specialized diet, the resources demanded are abundant (detritivores). Thus, in a long-term perspective, the food resources used by these species are rarely limiting in aquatic ecosystems, and these feeding characteristics should be one of the key factors determining the colonization success of fishes. Understanding the factors that determine the success of invasive species in new areas is critical for developing management policies aimed at minimizing the impacts of biological invasions.

Dam construction alters flow regimes and can change the composition of aquatic communities. Using data from three Brazilian hydrographic basins, we tested the hypothesis that reservoir cascades act as environmental filters for fish traits. This dataset included information on different environmental variables and fish traits (diet, migration, fecundation, parental care, position in the water column, and body size), and we used multivariate analysis (partial RLQ) to quantify the relationships between environmental variables, species abundance and traits. We found that the abundance of migratory species declined towards downstream reservoirs, which tend to be smaller and less turbid with a shorter water residence time than upstream reservoirs. We also found evidence of an association between reservoir age and the domination of fish communities by small-sized species with parental care, external fecundation, and benthic habits. Our findings suggest that particular fish traits are selected for across reservoir cascades.

This article discusses the purpose and effects of Law 3824/1960, which makes mandatory the removal of vegetation and consequent cleaning of land sites subject to flooding by the construction of artificial reservoirs. The importance of this reflection is to avoid having a law that is considered effective, though if questioned, may prove contrary to the objectives for which it was created. Thus, this article aims to awaken decision makers to the possibility that this law is considered inapplicable to the current reality, according to the social, scientific, legal and environmental advances achieved in recent years. As a specific objective, based on the findings obtained, we aim to stimulate authorities to act in favor of the elaboration of a law that will meet these advances. Resumo Este artigo discute a finalidade e os efeitos da Lei 3824/1960, que torna obrigatória a remoção da vegetação e consequente limpeza dos terrenos sujeitos a inundação pela construção de reservatórios artificiais. A importância dessa reflexão é evitar que uma lei considerada efetiva, ainda que questionada, possa ser contrária aos objetivos para os quais foi criada. Assim, este artigo visa despertar os tomadores de decisão para a possibilidade de essa lei ser considerada inaplicável à realidade atual, de acordo com os avanços sociais, científicos, jurídicos e ambientais alcançados nos últimos anos. Como objetivo específico, com base nos resultados obtidos, pretendemos estimular as autoridades a agirem em favor da elaboração de uma lei que atenda a esses avanços.

Brycon orbignyanus is an endemic species from La Plata basin whose stocks have been presenting significant reductions throughout the Paraná River. Brycon orbignyanus is categorized as an endangered species. This study evaluated aspects of the bio-ecology of this species that may be related to this threat, highlighting its distribution, abundance, and diet as well as the corresponding relationships between its recruitment and flood regimes. Data were obtained from different parts of the upper Paraná River (stretches free and regulated by dams) from 1986 to 2010 with more detailed data collected from the free remnant of this basin. The results indicate that no records for species exist at more than half of the sampling points located in dam-regulated sections of the Paraná River, whereas specimens were collected from 75% sites in the free plain remnant. We observed a remarkable effect of the hydrological regime on recruitment as well as distinct food demands during ontogenetic development, with adults almost exclusively consuming fruits and seeds, revealing that these individuals are supported by riparian vegetation. Thus, it is concluded that changes in the natural flood regime as well as riparian vegetation removal threaten B. orbignyanus populations in the Paraná River basin. RESUMO Brycon orbignyanus é uma espécie endêmica da bacia do rio da Prata, cujos estoques vêm apresentando redução relevante em todo o rio Paraná, e está classificada como espécie ameaçada. Este estudo avaliou aspectos da bio-ecologia da espécie, relacionados a essa ameaça, destacando sua distribuição, abundância, dieta e relação entre o recrutamento e o regime de inundação. Os dados foram obtidos em diferentes partes da bacia do alto rio Paraná (trechos regulados por barragens e trechos livres) de 1986 a 2010, com detalhes no remanescente livre desse segmento (planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná). Os resultados indicam que não existem registros da espécie em mais da metade dos pontos de amostragem localizados nos trechos da bacia do rio Paraná reguladas por barragens, enquanto a espécie foi capturada em 75% dos locais amostrados na planície (remanescente livre de barragem). Foi observado um efeito marcante do regime hidrológico sobre o recrutamento de B. orbignyanus, bem como o uso de diferentes alimentos durante seu desenvolvimento ontogenético, com adultos consumindo quase exclusivamente frutos e sementes, revelando que esses indivíduos são sustentados pela vegetação ripária. Assim, conclui-se que mudanças no regime natural de inundação, bem como a remoção da vegetação ripária, ambas decorrentes de ações antropogênicas, ameaçam B. orbignyanus na bacia do rio Paraná.

The executive and legislative branches of Brazilian government have either proposed or taken a variety of initiatives that threaten biodiversity and ecosystems. Opposition by the scientific community has largely been ignored by decision-makers. In this short essay, we present recent examples of harmful policies that have great potential to erode biodiversity, and we suggest ways to communicate scientific knowledge to decision- makers. If the current gap between conservation science and policies is not filled, the country will threaten the maintenance of its natural capital and, consequently, the sustainability of essential societal activities in the long term.

Floodplain river systems are extremely dynamic environments, where alternating dry and flooded periods affect the availability of food resources for fish. For piscivores, during drought years, a decreased availability of prey is expected, resulting in diets dominated by fewer items, narrower trophic niches with high dietary overlap. During floods, habitats become more similar, and, combined with increased connectivity, provide a wider diversity of prey to piscivores, decreasing dietary overlap and presenting wider trophic niches. This study aimed to evaluate the potential impacts of long periods of flooding on the trophic ecology of nine piscivorous fish in the upper Parana River basin. In drought years, diets were dominated by small characids, presenting narrower niches with higher dietary overlap. The opposite situation was observed during wet years, with different species responses, likely due to species-specific feeding strategies. High niche overlap was observed between native and non-native species, suggesting competition. The inclusion of non-native species in the native piscivorous diet is a concerning fact, as its causes and possible impacts are still unknown. In conclusion, long flooding pulses affect the diets of piscivorous fish in different ways by either increasing or decreasing niche breadth and overlap according to species-specific characteristics.

AIM: Contemporary patterns of species diversity are the result of a hierarchy of natural processes and modern anthropogenic influences. However, studies of these patterns in human‐modified systems from a macroecological perspective are lacking. Considering that fish assemblages in reservoirs reflect both long‐term evolutionary responses of species and shorter term responses to anthropogenic stressors, we employed a multi‐hypothesis approach using different magnitudes of predictors to analyse the processes that drive fish diversity in reservoirs at a broad spatial scale. LOCATION: Brazil. METHODS: We derived species richness from an extensive database of fish inhabiting Neotropical reservoirs, and using multiple regression analysis, we tested seven hypotheses that link species richness to continuous variables associated with regional, local and population components. We analysed the spatial structure using Moran's I autocorrelation coefficients and used spatial eigenvector mapping to explicitly account for the spatial component when testing the hypotheses by multiple regressions. Partial regressions were performed to map the relative contributions of the different components in explaining species richness. RESULTS: Predictors related to six hypotheses were retained in the best‐fit models, and our data supported the species–energy, metabolic, species–area, species–distance from the source and time of habitat alteration hypotheses. However, the predictions of the population abundance hypothesis (PAH) were not supported by the data. The shared effects of the different components explained the greatest proportion of the variation in species richness, indicating that distinct mechanisms related to these alternative hypotheses interact or are not spatially independent. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the latitudinal diversity gradient typically displayed by freshwater fish is maintained in human‐modified habitats, such as reservoirs, and that multiple mechanisms drive fish diversity in reservoirs over large spatial scales. The lack of support for the PAH implies that mechanisms structuring diversity patterns can be influenced by anthropogenic stressors.

The Xingu River, located in northern Brazil, is already under the impacts of one of the most harmful projects in the history of the Amazon – the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam. A new megaproject called the ‘Volta Grande Project’, led by Canadian gold mining company Belo Sun will be situated adjacent to the same stretch of the Xingu that is dewatered by the Belo Monte complex. Various aspects of the project are controversial. There are reports that the mining company acquired public lands illegally, the affected area has high biodiversity and endemism of several taxonomic groups, and mining operations would be approximately 9.5 km from indigenous lands. Synergistic impacts of impoundment and mining operations are expected to dramatically alter the Xingu's biodiversity and ecosystem services that support indigenous people and riverine populations. Moreover, the mining activities will generate tons of toxic waste that will be stored in a high-risk tailings dam, which exposes the Xingu River to catastrophic consequences similar to those of the Doce River disaster.

Brazil has a variety of aquatic ecosystems and rich freshwater biodiversity, but these components have been constantly damaged by the expansion of unsustainable activities. An array of different conservation strategies is needed, especially the creation of protected areas (PAs, hereafter). However, Brazil's PAs are biased towards terrestrial ecosystems and we argue that current PAs have limited efficacy in the protection of freshwater biodiversity. New PAs should better consider aquatic environments, covering entire basins, rivers and other freshwater habitats. We recommend ways to implement these PAs and provide guidance to avoid social impacts. Freshwater systems in Brazil provide essential goods and services but these ecosystems are being rapidly degraded and will be lost if not adequately protected. © 2018 The Authors. The number of dams has had a significant increase in the last six decades, altering the physiography of rivers and creating systems of reservoirs in series. Therefore, it is expected that in a cascade of reservoirs, detritivorous fish will be especially affected due to the loss of nutritional quality in these regions, resulted from the high sedimentation of nutrients and organic matter. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether changes in the abundance of detritivorous fish, throughout a reservoir cascade in Brazil, resulted from trophic and limnological variations associated with sediment and nutrient retention. We used the Structural Equation Models approach (SEM) to test hypotheses. The six reservoirs studied are located in the Sao Francisco River, in the Northeast Brazil. The variables used to index latent variable oligotrophication were divided into trophic (total phosphate, nitrate and chlorophyll-a) and limnological variables (turbidity and water residence time accumulated), and the abundance of the detritivore guild was indexed by the catch per unit effort (CPUE). Our results indicate a significant negative impact of the both trophic (total phosphate, chlorophyll-a and nitrate) and limnological indicators (turbidity) on the oligotrophication process. The longer residence times of the water accumulated along the reservoir cascade augment the oligotrophication process, consequently affecting negatively all the trophic and limnological indicators analysed. Finally, the latent variable oligotrophication had a significant negative effect on the latent variable detritivorous fish abundance throughout the cascade. The Curimatidae family was the most affected by oligotrophication along the cascade, followed by Prochilodontidae. These different responses to the detritivorous fish families reflect different patterns in the morphology of the oral apparatus and forms of food apprehension. Our findings are of particular importance for the management of fish species in highly fragmented rivers.

In floodplain communities, beta diversity is influenced by different factors; however, environmental heterogeneity and floods are believed to be particularly influential. The influence of environmental heterogeneity and floods on beta diversity may vary among guilds that present different ecological traits. This study evaluated the correlation between the environmental heterogeneity and flood periods and the beta diversity of trophic and reproductive guilds of fish assemblages. Sampling was conducted quarterly between 2000 and 2012 in the upper Paraná River floodplain. The environmental heterogeneity and period (i.e., dry or flood) were associated with the beta diversity of each guild based on the results of generalized least squares linear models. Only guilds with parental care were influenced by the interaction between environmental heterogeneity and period. The beta diversity of the other guilds presented no relationship between environmental heterogeneity and period. It is likely that species with parental care presented less dispersal capacity, which increased the dissimilarity among assemblages. The higher dispersion rates of the other guilds may be responsible for the lack of relationship between the beta diversity and the environmental heterogeneity and period. In sum, these results suggest that reproductive guilds influence how environmental heterogeneity and floods affect beta diversity variation. RESUMO A diversidade beta é influenciada por diferentes fatores em comunidades de planícies de inundação; contudo, acredita-se que a heterogeneidade ambiental e inundações sejam particularmente influentes. A influência da heterogeneidade ambiental e inundações na diversidade beta podem variar entre guildas que apresentam diferentes características ecológicas. Este estudo avaliou a correlação entre heterogeneidade ambiental, os períodos de inundação e a diversidade beta de guildas tróficas e reprodutivas de peixes. A amostragem foi realizada trimestralmente entre 2000 e 2012 na planície de inundação do Alto rio Paraná. Heterogeneidade ambiental e o período (i.e., seca ou cheia) foram associados à diversidade beta de cada guilda por modelos lineares de quadrados mínimos generalizados. Somente guildas com cuidados parentais foram influenciadas pela interação entre heterogeneidade ambiental e período. A diversidade beta das outras guildas não apresentou relação com heterogeneidade ambiental e período. É provável que espécies com cuidados parentais apresentem menor capacidade de dispersão, o que aumenta a diferença entre as assembleias. As maiores taxas de dispersão de outras guildas podem ser responsáveis pela ausência de relação entre a diversidade beta e heterogeneidade ambiental e o período. Em suma, os resultados sugerem que as guildas reprodutivas influenciam a forma como a heterogeneidade ambiental e as inundações afetam a variação da diversidade beta.

Understanding the variation of fish assemblages in reservoirs is crucial for precise interpretations of ecological processes. However, representative samples in such environments are subjected both to spatial zonation (longitudinal and transversal gradients) and limitations of fishing gears. We used a large zoned reservoir (Itaipu, Brazil) to perform a quasi-experiment that assessed the relative role of spatial gradients and fishing methods on fish diversity and composition. Active (cast nets, electrofishing and seines) and passive (gillnets and longlines) fishing gears were employed in lotic, transitional and lentic habitats of the reservoir and three large tributaries. In total 6281 individuals of 101 species were captured. Sampling methods and spatial gradients had an influence on species composition, with significant interactions between these factors. In addition, results produced by a variation partitioning analysis suggested that 21 % of the species richness was explained by the sampling methods and 7 % by the longitudinal gradient; whereas for species composition, 12 and 3 % corresponded to sampling methods and transversal gradients, respectively. Overall, our results suggest that variations among fishing gears is greater than across strong spatial gradients, emphasizing the importance of using multiple and complementary fishing methods in reservoirs for characterization of fish assemblages. The interactions between spatial gradients and sampling methods were higher with transversal than with longitudinal gradients, suggesting that substantial differences in species richness and composition among sampling gears depend to some extent on habitat.
