Glyphosate is a systemic, broad-spectrum and post-emergent herbicide. The use of glyphosate has grown in the last decades, and it is currently the most used herbicide worldwide. The rise of glyphosate consumption over the years also brought an increased concern about its possible toxicity and consequences for human health. However, a scientific community consensus does not exist at the present time, and glyphosate’s safety and health consequences are controversial. Since glyphosate is mainly applied in fields and can persist several months in the soil, concerns have been raised about the impact that its presence in food can cause in humans. Therefore, this work aims to review the glyphosate use, toxicity and occurrence in diverse food samples, which, in certain cases, occurs at violative levels. The incidence of glyphosate at levels above those legally allowed and the suspected toxic effects of this compound raise awareness regarding public health.

The consumption of pistachios (Pistacia vera L.) has been increasing, given their important benefit to human health. In addition to being an excellent nutritional source, they have been associated with chemical hazards, such as mycotoxins, resulting in fungal contamination and its secondary metabolism. Aflatoxins (AFs) are the most common mycotoxins in pistachio and the most toxic to humans, with hepatotoxic effects. More mycotoxins such as ochratoxin A (OTA), fumonisins (FBs), zearalenone (ZEA) and trichothecenes (T2, HT2 and DON) and emerging mycotoxins have been involved in nuts. Because of the low levels of concentration and the complexity of the matrix, the determination techniques must be very sensitive. The present paper carries out an extensive review of the state of the art of the determination of mycotoxins in pistachios, concerning the trends in analytical methodologies for their determination and the levels detected as a result of its contamination. Screening methods based on immunoassays are useful due to their simplicity and rapid response. Liquid chromatography (LC) is the gold standard with new improvements to enhance accuracy, precision and sensitivity and a lower detection limit. The reduction of Aspergillus’ and aflatoxins’ contamination is important to minimize the public health risks. While prevention, mostly in pre-harvest, is the most effective and preferable measure to avoid mycotoxin contamination, there is an increased number of decontamination processes which will also be addressed in this review.

The use of glyphosate has been increasing over the years, making it one of the most consumed herbicides in the world. Although children are considered a vulnerable population, only four previous published studies determined glyphosate in the urine of non-occupationally exposed children. The paucity of epidemiological data and biomonitoring surveys are considered major gaps, that hinder the implementation of science driven policies in the protection of public health. The aim of the present study was to determine glyphosate in the urine of 41 Portuguese children (2-13 years old) and identify potential determinants of exposure. Glyphosate was detected in 95.1% of the samples (1.77 ± 0.86 μg/L), up to a maximum value of 4.35 μg/L. Glyphosate concentrations were higher in the urine of children aged 7-9 years, living near agricultural areas (1 km), with a higher percentage of consumption of home-produced foods, and whose parents applied herbicides in the backyard. Risk assessment revealed an exposure representing 1-5.58% of the established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of glyphosate (0.5 mg/kg bw/day). The results should be further analyzed considering the age of the participants, for which no adjusted ADI exists. This was the first published report of glyphosate exposure in the urine of Portuguese children.

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in water catchments and drinking waters raises potential risks to public health. Therefore, after addressing the major aquatic contamination pathway, the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and, subsequently, surface waters, 18 human pharmaceuticals from 6 therapeutic groups (antibiotics, lipid regulators, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and hormones) were analyzed in drinking water catchments, tap and drinking fountain waters. This was performed by solid phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass detection (LC-MS/MS). The 97 samples analyzed were collected from 31 different sites in the center of Portugal. All samples presented concentrations below the method detection limits (MDLs) that ranged between 1.13 to 5.45 ng L−1. The achieved results contributed to a better knowledge on the Portuguese and European context of drinking water, since there is a knowledge gap regarding this matrix. Comparing our data with other studies, published worldwide, we can observe that median concentrations of pharmaceuticals were reported in the low ng L−1 levels, values close to our MDLs. Consequently, it is unlikely that, in light of the current knowledge, the presence of pharmaceuticals in drinking water presents a threat to human health.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is produced by fungi present in several agricultural products with much relevance to food safety. Since this mycotoxin is widely found in cereals, beer has a potential contamination risk. Therefore, it was deemed essential to quantify, for the first time, the levels of OTA in beer, a cereal-based product that is marketed in Portugal, as well as to calculate the human estimated weekly intake (EWI) and risk assessment. A total of 85 samples were analyzed through immunoaffinity clean-up, followed by liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (LC-FD). This analytical methodology allowed a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.43 &micro, g/L. The results showed that 10.6% were contaminated at levels ranging between &lt, LOQ and 11.25 &micro, g/L, with an average of 3.14 &plusmn, 4.09 &micro, g/L. Samples of industrial production presented lower incidence and contamination levels than homemade and craft beers. On what concerns human risk, the calculated EWI was significantly lower than the tolerable weekly intake (TWI). However, in the worst case scenario, based on a high concentration, the rate EWI/TWI was 138.01%.

In line with the Directive 2013/39/EU the most representative surface waters, regarding pharmaceuticals contamination, were selected based on a Portuguese nationwide monitoring exercise. To meet this purpose, and given that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are regarded as the major point sources of pharmaceuticals environmental contamination, the occurrence, fate and environmental risk assessment (ERA) of eleven of the most consumed pharmaceuticals, belonging to several therapeutic classes were assessed in 15 WWTPs (influents (WWIs) and effluents (WWEs)), from five different regions during one year (4 sampling campaigns). Results showed that all samples were contaminated with at least 1, and up to 8 from the 11 targeted pharmaceuticals. The highest concentrations observed were 150 and 33 μg L(-1) for WWI and WWE, respectively. Regarding temporal and spacial influence, winter, Alentejo, Algarve and Center regions presented higher mass loads. The ERA posed by 7 of the selected pharmaceuticals presented a risk quotient higher than 1 to the three trophic levels. Our findings highlighted that the rivers Mondego, Tagus, Ave, Trancão, Fervença and Xarrama should be selected as surface water monitoring stations. This study gives a good overview on pharmaceuticals contamination in WWTPs and its impact on surface waters in Portugal. Thus, a more integrative approach to rank and prioritize pharmaceuticals, based on an integrated assessment of ERA and exposure of surface water, was provided to support the future selection of the 6 most representative monitoring stations in Portugal, as required by the above mentioned directive.

In this study, biomonitoring of nursing Portuguese mothers to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and assessment of potential health risks of their infants were performed through determination of 18 PAHs and 6 major metabolites (OH-PAHs) in breast milk. Concentrations of total PAHs ranged between 55.2 and 1119 ng/g fat, being naphthalene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, and phenanthrene the most abundant compounds (68.4% of ∑PAHs). Benzo(a)pyrene, known carcinogenic, was not detected. Total levels of OH-PAHs ranged from 6.66 to 455 ng/g fat with 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 1-hydroxynaphthalene and 1-hydroxyacenaphthene as major compounds (96% of ∑OH-PAHs). Concentrations of ∑PAHs and ∑OH-PAHs were strongly correlated between each other (r = 0.692; p ≤ 0.001) and moderately-to-strongly associated with individual compounds (0.203 r 0.841; p ≤ 0.001). The attained data suggest increased levels of PAHs in older nursing mothers (30 years) and in those whose child had lower weight (up to 3.0 kg). Breast-fed infant presented a median PAHs daily intake of 1.41 μg/kg body weight (total benzo(a)pyrene equivalents of 0.0679 μg/kg) and were exposed to 0.024 μg/kg body weight of ∑PAH4 [benz(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(j)fluoranthene, and chrysene]. Although breast milk is a secure food for newborns, un-metabolized and metabolized PAHs should be included in biomonitoring surveillance studies during breastfeeding to prevent potential health risks for infants.

Until now, the available data regarding citrinin (CIT) levels in food and the consumption of contaminated foods are insufficient to allow a reliable estimate of intake. Therefore, biomonitoring configuring analysis of parent compound and/or metabolites in biological fluids, such as urine or blood, is being increasingly applied in the assessment of human exposure to CIT and its metabolite, dihydrocitrinone (DH-CIT). Most studies report urinary levels lower for the parent compound when compared with DH-CIT. A high variability either in the mean levels or in the inter-individual ratios of CIT/DH-CIT between the reported studies has been found. Levels of DH-CIT in urine were reported as being comprised between three to seventeen times higher than the parent mycotoxin. In order to comply with this objective, sensitive analytical methodologies for determining biomarkers of exposure are required. Recent development of powerful analytical techniques, namely liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC-MS/MS) have facilitated biomonitoring studies, mainly in urine samples. In the present work, evidence on human exposure to CIT through its occurrence and its metabolite, in biological fluids, urine and blood/plasma, in different countries, is reviewed. The analytical methodologies usually employed to evaluate trace quantities of these two molecules, are also presented. In this sense, relevant data on sampling (size and pre-treatment), extraction, cleanup and detection and quantification techniques and respective chromatographic conditions, as well as the analytical performance, are evidenced.

Potential risks associated with releases of human pharmaceuticals into the environment have become an increasingly important issue in environmental health. This concern has been driven by the widespread detection of pharmaceuticals in all aquatic compartments. Therefore, 22 pharmaceuticals, 6 metabolites and transformation products, belonging to 7 therapeutic groups, were selected to perform a review on their toxicity and environmental risk assessment (ERA) in different aquatic compartments, important issues to tackle the water framework directive (WFD). The toxicity data collected reported, with the exception of anxiolytics, at least one toxicity value for concentrations below 1 µg L−1. The results obtained for the ERA revealed risk quotients (RQs) higher than 1 in all the aquatic bodies and for the three trophic levels, algae, invertebrates and fish, posing ecotoxicological pressure in all of these compartments. The therapeutic groups with higher RQs were hormones, antiepileptics, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Unsurprisingly, RQs values were highest in wastewaters, however, less contaminated water bodies such as groundwaters still presented maximum values up to 91,150 regarding 17α-ethinylestradiol in fish. Overall, these results present an important input for setting prioritizing measures and sustainable strategies, minimizing their impact in the aquatic environment.

The therapeutic groups which presented higher detection frequencies and concentrations were anti-inflammatories, antiepileptics, antibiotics and lipid regulators. These results present a broad and specialized background, enabling a complete overview on the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic compartments.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin detected worldwide. Urine biomonitoring is a more realistic and non-invasive way to assess exposure when compared to traditional methods based on food occurrence and consumption data. Few studies have investigated children's exposure to OTA, although it is a more susceptible population. Our main goal was the OTA biomonitoring in urine of Portuguese children to better characterize the health risk of this population. The validated analytical methodology was based on an immunoaffinity clean-up, followed by LC-FD. First morning samples were collected, between 2018 and 2019, from 85 healthy children, 41 boys and 44 girls, aging between 2 and 13 years old. Overall, from the 85 analysed samples 79 (92.94%) were found positive. The average OTA concentration level was of 0.020 ng/mL (29.41 ng/g of creatinine), with a maximum value of 0.052 ng/mL (114.45 ng/g of creatinine). No statistical differences were found between the OTA contamination levels, the anthropometric data and dietary habits considered. Depending on the excretion rate considered for the PDI calculation, the risk assessed for the average OTA contamination varied from 10% to 194%, indicating a potential concern. This is the first study regarding OTA exposure in Portuguese children, showing their clear exposure.

Antibiotics, especially fluoroquinolones (FQs), have been largely used in animal husbandry namely poultry production. Therefore, this study aimed to identify, quantify and estimate the daily intake for adult and 3-year-old populations of the FQs norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and enrofloxacin (ENR) through poultry muscle consumption. The results showed detection frequencies of 78% and 62% in supermarket and school canteen samples, respectively. Of the 182 analysed samples, 4 did not comply with ENR maximum residue level (MRL), and 9 were contaminated with NOR, not allowed as a veterinary medicine of food-producing animals. The highest estimated daily intake value was obtained for the 3-year-old population regarding the sum of ENR and CIP (0.46 μg kg−1 day−1); value substantially lower than the established acceptable daily intake (2.0 μg kg−1 day−1). Although the low risk found, the high detection frequencies support the apprehension of the different international organizations, towards the emergence of human bacterial resistances to FQs originated from poultry production.

Processos de tratamentos têm sido alvo de estudos com a finalidade de promover a remoção dos fármacos na urina humana de forma a garantir a segurança ambiental da utilização dessa como fertilizante na agricultura. Neste artigo foi desenvolvido e validado um método de CLAE-DF para a determinação simultânea de ofloxacina, norfloxacina e ciprofloxacina na urina humana. O método proposto descreve uma alternativa eficaz para a determinação de resíduos de fluoroquinolonas, eliminando o passo de limpeza. Além disso, o método proposto demonstrou ser seletivo, com boa linearidade (r>0,99), sensibilidade, precisão (80% a 107%) e repetitividade. Este método mostra ser adequado para análises de rotina (de baixo custo, simples, e utilizando pequeno volume de solventes) para abordagens ecológicas.

Antibiotics represent a pharmacotherapeutic group widely used in both human and veterinary medicine for which ecosurveillance has been continually recommended. It is urgent to rank the antibiotics and highlight those that may pose potential risk to the environment, a key step for the risk management. The absence of this type of contributions applied to the Portuguese reality supported the idea of compiling the data presented herein. With such purpose the most recent and representative data is used to draw a comparative contribution of each antimicrobial classes according to their intended use, i.e., in human versus veterinary medicine. The aim was to assess: (1) the amount and patterns of antimicrobials usage between human and animals; (2) the qualitative comparison between the antimicrobial classes used in each practice (human and veterinary) or specific use; (3) the potential to enter the environment, metabolism, mode of action and environmental occurrences. This manuscript will, thus, identify priorities for the environmental risk assessment, considering the ranking of the antimicrobials by their usage and potential environmental exposure. Ultimately, this study will serve as a basis for future monitoring programs, guiding the policy of regulatory agencies.

A new analytical methodology, based on liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (LC-FD), after extraction, enzymatic hydrolysis, and solid-phase extraction (SPE) through Oasis HLB cartridges, was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of three monohydroxy derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The optimized analytical method is sensitive, accurate, and precise, with recoveries between 62 and 110% and limits of detection of 227, 9, and 45 ng/g for 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, and 1-hydroxypyrene, respectively. Their levels were estimated in different cephalopod matrices (edible tissues and hemolymph). The methodology was applied to samples of the major cephalopod species consumed worldwide. Of the 18 samples analyzed, 39% were contaminated with 1-hydroxynaphthalene, which was the only PAH metabolite detected. Its concentration ranged from 786 to 1145 ng/g. This highly sensitive and specific method allows the identification and quantitation of PAH metabolites in forthcoming food safety and environmental monitoring programs.

This study investigated the occurrence of tetracyclines (TCs), namely minocycline (MIN), TC, and its epimer epitetracycline (ETC), and doxycycline (DC), in four hospital wastewater effluents and its fate in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), in Coimbra, Portugal. Analytical determination was carried out by solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. A gradient system with a mobile phase containing oxalic acid 0.02 M and acetonitrile was used. After postcolumn derivatization with magnesium reagent, TCs were detected at lambda(exc) 386 nm and lambda(em) 500 nm. The proposed method allowed good sensitivity, accuracy, and precision. LOQs were 0.5 microg l(-1) for ETC and TC and 15 and 5 microg l(-1) for MIN and DC, respectively. The recovery values ranged between 66.4% and 117.1%, and intraday and interday repeatability was lower than 6.8%. The method was successfully used to determine the presence of the above-mentioned TCs in 24 wastewater composite samples obtained from hospital effluents and from influent and effluent of the WWTP located in Coimbra, Portugal. MIN and TC were found in 41.7% of the samples; ETC and DC were found in 25% and 8.3% of the samples, respectively. The levels found ranged from 6 to 531.7 microg l(-1) in hospital effluents, while its concentrations in WWTP ranged from 95.8 to 915.3 microg l(-1). A seasonal influence in the concentrations found has also been observed, the levels found in samples collected during spring being higher than those observed in samples collected during autumn; however, these are only preliminary results. The WWTP removal rate ranged between 89.5% and 100%.

The presented procedure involves an extraction with methanol–water, centrifugation and cleanup with immunoaffinity columns. A comparison study between fluorescence detector, mass spectrometry, and tandem mass spectrometry with a triple quadrupole (QqQ) analyzer using an electrospray ionisation interface for the determination of fumonisin B1 and B2 in corn-based products has been performed. Limits of quantification obtained by the three detectors were lower than the maximum levels established by European Commission. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry provides higher sensitivity (12 μg kg−1for fumonisins B1 and B2) when compared to mass spectrometry (40 μg kg−1for both fumonisins), and fluorescence detection (20 μg kg−1 for fumonisin B1 and 15 μg kg−1 for B2), and also showed to be more precise. At 150 and 250 μg kg−1 spiking levels, the recovery rates for fumonisin B1 and B2 in corn products varied from 79% to 102%, with a relative standard deviation ranging from 9% to 17%. A critical assessment including advantages and drawbacks of each technique is presented. A total of 41 organic and non-organic corn-based food samples from Valencia markets were analyzed. Seven samples were contaminated with levels ranging from 68 μg kg−1 to 922 μg kg−1of fumonisin B1 and 42 μg kg−1 to 640 μg kg−1of fumonisin B2. Only one sample exceeded the maximum level for the sum of fumonisin B1 and B2, proposed for corn products in a recent EU regulation. The contamination frequency of organic corn samples (40%) was higher than non-organic ones (3.7%), and contained higher levels of fumonisin B1 and B2.

Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants and it must be noted that approximately 70 % of them are excreted via urine. Therefore, urine usage implies the risk of transfer of pharmaceutical residues to agricultural fields and environment contamination. Thus, this study aimed on the development and validation of a LC-MS/MS method for D-norgestrel (D-NOR) and progesterone (PRO) determination in human urine, as well as the evaluation of the removal efficiency of two methods (storage and evaporation), and the effects of acidification with sulfuric acid. The storage process was evaluated for 6 weeks, while the evaporation was assessed at three different temperatures (50, 75, and 100 °C). All experiments were done with normal urine (pH = 6.0) and acidified urine (pH = 2.0, with sulfuric acid). The results of validation showed good method efficiency. In the second week of storage, higher hormone degradation was observed. In the evaporation method, both D-NOR and PRO were almost completely degraded when the volume was reduced to the lowermost level. Results also indicate that acidification did not affect degradation. Overall, the results showed that combination of two methods can be employed for more efficient hormone removal in urine.

Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, is among the most prescribed pharmaceutical active substances worldwide. This study aimed to assess its accumulation and metabolization in the mussel Mytillus galloprovincialis, considered an excellent sentinel species for traditional and emerging pollutants. Mussels were collected from Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal, and exposed to a nominal concentration of fluoxetine (75 ng L-1) for 15 days. Approximately 1 g of whole mussel soft tissues was extracted with acetonitrile:formic acid, loaded into an Oasis MCX cartridge, and fluoxetine analysed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MSn). After 3 days of exposure, fluoxetine was accumulated in 70% of the samples, with a mean of 2.53 ng g(-1) dry weight (d.w.) and norfluoxetine was only detected in one sample (10%), at 3.06 ng g(-1) d.w. After 7 days of exposure, the accumulation of fluoxetine and norfluoxetine increased up to 80 and 50% respectively, and their mean accumulated levels in mussel tissues were up to 4.43 and 2.85 ng g(-1) d.w., respectively. By the end of the exposure period (15 days), both compounds were detected in 100% of the samples (mean of 9.31 and 11.65 ng g(-1) d.w., respectively). Statistical analysis revealed significant accumulation differences between the 3rd and 15th day of exposure for fluoxetine, and between the 3rd and 7th against the 15th day of exposure for norfluoxetine. These results suggest that the fluoxetine accumulated in mussel tissues is likely to be metabolised into norfluoxetine with the increase of the time of exposure, giving evidence that at these realistic environmental concentrations, toxic effects of fluoxetine in mussel tissues may occur. Escherichia coli is simultaneously an indicator of water contamination and a human pathogen. This study aimed to characterize the virulence and resistance of E. coli from municipal and hospital wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in central Portugal. From a total of 193 isolates showing reduced susceptibility to cefotaxime and/or nalidixic acid, 20 E. coli with genetically distinct fingerprint profiles were selected and characterized. Resistance to antimicrobials was determined using the disc diffusion method. Extended spectrum β-lactamase and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes, phylogroups, pathogenicity islands (PAIs) and virulence genes were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). CTX-M producers were typed by multilocus sequence typing. Resistance to beta-lactams was associated with the presence of bla(TEM), bla(SHV), bla(CTX-M-15) and bla(CTX-M-32). Plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance was associated with qnrA, qnrS and aac(6')-Ib-cr. Aminoglycoside resistance and multidrug-resistant phenotypes were also detected. PAI IV(536), PAI II(CFT073), PAI II(536) and PAI I(CFT073), and uropathogenic genes iutA, papAH and sfa/foc were detected. With regard to the clinical ST131 clone, it carried bla(CTX-M-15), blaTEM-type, qnrS and aac(6')-lb-cr; IncF and IncP plasmids, and virulence factors PAI IV(536), PAI I(CFT073), PAI II(CFT073), iutA, sfa/foc and papAH were identified in the effluent of a hospital plant. WWTPs contribute to the dissemination of virulent and resistant bacteria in water ecosystems, constituting an environmental and public health risk.

An analytical study based on extraction with acetonitrile-water, immunoaffinity column cleanup, and HPLC/fluorescence detection for separation and identification of ochratoxin A in coriander was carried out. Validation of the applied methodology was done through accuracy and precision studies. Homogenized samples of coriander were spiked in triplicate with ochratoxin A at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 µg/kg levels. Recovery values were in the range of 98% for a fortification level at 0.5 µg/kg to 109.1% at 1.0 µg/kg. Application to coriander samples available in Portuguese markes showed no contamination with ochratoxin A.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a secondary fungal metabolite produced by several moulds, mainly by Aspergillus ochraceus and by Penicillium verrucosum, that occurs in meat products. The aim of this work was to optimize an efficient extraction procedure for the determination of OTA in muscle tissue in order to assess its occurrence in meat samples. Three different apparatus, a Waring blender, a switching apparatus, and an ultrasonic processor, were evaluated to verify the efficiency of extraction. The analytical methods proposed involve the extraction with chloroform-orthophosphoric acid, cleanup through an immunoaffinity column, high-performance liquid chromatography/fluorescence detection for separation and identification of OTA, and confirmation with liquid chromatography/FD after methylation of OTA in muscle tissue. The limit of quantification of the proposed method was 0.04 microg kg(-1). Recoveries of OTA, using switching apparatus, ranged from 90.3 to 103.2% for chicken muscle spiked at 2.4 and 0.48 microg kg(-1), respectively, with a within-day relative standard deviation of 17 and 15.3%. The proposed method was applied to 38 chicken, swine, and turkey muscle samples and the presence of OTA was confirmed in five samples. Finally, the estimated daily intake of OTA in this study was between 23 pg kg(-1) body weight per day for swine samples and 18 pg kg(-1) body weight per day for turkey samples.

An analytical method for the determination of OTC and TC residues in honey was developed. Sample treatment involves an extraction in EDTA-McIlvaine buffer, followed by a solid-phase cleanup step. With regard to the cleanup procedure, different SPE cartridges were evaluated and the results presented. The method was validated according to the guidelines laid down by the 2002/657/EC European Decision parameters: decision limit (Ccα) and detection capability (CCβ) were 20 and 21 μg/Kg and 49 and 50 μg/Kg for OTC and TC, respectively, and recoveries of OTC and TC from spiked samples, at three fortification levels, were higher than 87% for both compounds. In this study nine organochlorine pesticide residues ([alpha]-, [beta]-, and [gamma]-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), aldrin, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, o,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDT) in forty nine samples of honey collected from markets of Portugal and Spain during 2001 and 2002, respectively, were evaluated. For this evaluation, three analytical procedures were studied. The analytical procedure, based on LLE extraction with ethyl acetate followed by gas chromatography-electron-capture detection (GC-ECD) for quantification, and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for confirmation, has been selected. Recoveries of spiked samples ranged from 68%, for [beta]-HCH, and 126% for p,p'-DDT, for fortification levels between 10 and 100 [mu]g/kg, and 64%, for [alpha]-HCH, and 143% for [gamma]-HCH for fortification levels between 20 and 200 [mu]g/kg. Limits of quantification, using GC-ECD, were from 0.01 and 0.10 mg/kg, and limits of detection between 0.001 and 0.02 mg/kg. Fourteen Valencian samples were contaminated, containing residues of HCB or/and HCH isomers. The frequency of detection was 56% for Spanish samples. In Portugal, 23 samples were contaminated, what means 95.8%. In Spanish samples, concentrations range from nd to 0.03 mg/kg for HCB, and nd to 2.24 mg/kg for HCH-total. The mean concentration and standard deviation were 0.017 ± 0.011 mg/kg for HCB, and 0.579 ± 0.747 mg/kg for HCH-total, contributing the [gamma] isomer with the highest values. The samples from Portugal showed higher levels. Levels of HCB ranged from nd to 0.39 mg/kg. HCH-total ranged from nd to 4.86 mg/kg, and DDT-total from nd to 0.658 mg/kg. The occurrence of zearalenone (ZEA) in different flours for human consumption, from the Portuguese and Dutch markets, was evaluated. Good analytical performance was obtained through extraction with acetonitrile:water (90:10), clean-up with immunoaffinity columns, and detection and quantification by liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. ZEA levels were determined in 48 samples to verify the compliance with the maximum permitted levels by European legislation. Two flour samples from Portugal exceeded the maximum limit established by EC. A major presence and levels in maize flours was shown. Coimbra (Portugal) and Utrecht (The Netherlands) samples showed that 37.5% of the samples were contaminated. Considering the percentage of TDI, ranging between 5.2 and 56%, the risk assessment linked with the exposure to ZEA was considered to be of concern for some studied populations, especially for babies. This is the first study on the intake assessment of ZEA present in different types of flour through their consumption.

Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) antidepressants are amongst the most prescribed pharmaceutical active substances throughout the world. Their presence, already described in different environmental compartments such as wastewaters, surface, ground and drinking waters, and sediments, and their remarkable effects on non-target organisms justify the growing concern about these emerging environmental pollutants. A comprehensive review of the literature data with focus on their footprint in the aquatic biota, namely their uptake, bioaccumulation and both acute and chronic ecotoxicology is presented. Long-term multigenerational exposure studies, at environmental relevant concentrations and in mixtures of related compounds, such as oestrogenic endocrine disruptors, continue to be sparse and are imperative to better know their environmental impact.
