No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-01-01 Pollen morphology, ultrasculpture and ultrastructure were investigated for Poiretia in search of morphological characters of taxonomic importance using light microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Additionally, principal components analysis was done to elucidate patterns of variation among the species. Pollen grains are small to medium size, isopolar, prolate spheroidal to prolate, 3-zonocolporate, colporus with operculum, membrane and margo are ornamented. Five pollen types are recognised and described based on mesocolpium exine ultrasculpture. Exine consists of a compact tectum, eutectate, tectate perforate to semitectate, the infratectum is collumelar and granular, foot layer discontinuous to absent in aperture region and endexine is continuous. A comprehensive description of the operculum, membrane ornamentations and the ultrastructure of exine were given for all species in the genus, nine of which were not previously analysed palynologically. Systematic implications of the palynological variations found in the literature and through light, scanning and transmission electron microscopical analyses were discussed. This article describes the importance of the characterisation of Poiretia pollen grains, which contributes to the systematics of the Adesmia informal clade. The class of endoaperture, ultrasculpture of mesocolpium and apocolpium, and ultrastructure of tectum, foot layer, and endexine support the eurypalynous status of Poiretia and are useful to recognise some species that have problematic delimitation (P. latifolia, P. coriifolia, P. unifoliolata, P. mattogrossensis, P. elegans, P. marginata) as well as groups of species. Stylosanthes, with approximately 50 species, is a pantropical, economically important genus of Leguminosae, with several species having forage potential and soil improvement potential. Thirty-two species have been recorded in Brazil, with the Northeast region being one of the main centers of diversity of the genus in the country. Despite this, no taxonomic work focusing on Stylosanthes has been done for the region. This study presents a taxonomic treatment of Stylosanthes species occurring in the Northeast region of Brazil. Botanical specimens were collected in the field together with visits to the main herbaria in the Northeast (ALCB, HUEFS, HUNEB, HVASF) for specimen analysis. Online consultation of databases in virtual herbaria, analysis of regional flora accounts, assessment of types and discussions with legume experts were also undertaken. Twenty-three taxa were confirmed as occurring in NE Brazil, with six new occurrences recorded for the states of Ceará, Paraíba, Piauí, and Rio Grande do Norte. Resumo Stylosanthes, com aproximadamente 50 espécies, é um dos gêneros mais economicamente importantes de Leguminosae, com táxons que apresentam potencial forrageiro em regiões tropicais. Trinta e duas espécies foram registradas no Brasil, sendo a Região Nordeste um dos principais centros de diversidade do gênero. Apesar disto, nenhum trabalho taxonômico focando em Stylosanthes foi feito para a região. Este estudo apresenta o tratamento taxonômico das espécies de Stylosanthes ocorrentes na Região Nordeste do Brasil. Espécimes foram coletados em campo junto com visitas às principais coleções do Nordeste (ALCB, HUEFS, HUNEB, HVASF) para análise dos táxons. Consultas on-line dos bancos de dados em herbários virtuais, análises das floras regionais, consultas aos tipos e discussões com especialistas em leguminosas também foram realizadas. Foram confirmados 23 táxons, sendo seis novas ocorrências registradas para os estados do Ceará, Paraíba, Piauí, e Rio Grande do Norte. As espécies encontradas nas áreas estudadas diferenciam-se principalmente pela morfologia dos frutos e brácteas. Stylosanthes, comprising approximately 50 species, is considered a taxonomically difficult genus, as its component taxa demonstrate very uniform external morphological characteristics. The presence of very similar species complexes within the genus is one of the principal factors complicating the identification of its taxa. Within that context, the present study seeks to morphologically analyze the fruit surface of Brazilian Stylosanthes species in a search for characteristics of potential use in the identification of species and species groups. Additionally, multivariate analyses (principal components analysis [PCA] and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean [UPGMA]) were used to elucidate patterns of variation within the species complexes and to test the validity of current species delimitations. Methodology. The fruits of 22 species of Stylosanthes were mounted, without previous treatment, directly on stubs using double-sided tape and were then sputter-coated with gold for examination using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PCA and UPGMA were performed using 22 operational taxonomic units and 10 morphological fruit article characteristics. Pivotal results. The surfaces of the fruit articles are variously covered by simple trichomes, glandular trichomes, papillae, veins, and grooves. Four ornamentation patterns were observed, as follows: verrucose, papillose, reticulate, or reticulate with a papillose appearance. Multivariate analyses (PCA and UPGMA) do corroborate, in part, the three species complexes as traditionally circumscribed (the S. guianensis, S. macrocephala, and S. scabra complexes); however, accessions of S. guianensis species (S. guianensis complex) appeared nested within the S. macrocephala and S. scabra complexes. Conclusions. The micro- and macromorphological analyses provided results useful for separating species, as observed in the identification key, but multivariate analyses with only characteristics of fruit did not support the three traditional species complexes: S. guianensis, S. macrocephala, and S. scabra. Further multivariate analysis using other characters should be investigated to better understand the relationships of the species of each one of the complexes. But regardless of whether the complexes remained in this study, the results obtained from the fruit characteristics were useful in showing that it is important to separate the species treated here. The species occur in tropical savannas and grasslands, including the cerrado in Brazil. They have adapted to these environments by developing specialized underground organs, and an abundance of trichomes. Here we present the first comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analysis of Eriosema, including species from its entire distribution range and generating 391 new DNA sequences. We sampled 140 species from nine genera of Cajaninae, of which 94 (60% of the genus) were Eriosema. Our analyses were based on the nuclear ITS and plastid rp132 and trnQ regions, and used maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of individual and combined data sets. In all analyses, Eriosema was resolved as monophyletic, but its interspecific relationships are not well resolved. Rhynchosia is not monophyletic, and some African Rhynchosia spp. emerged together as sister to Eriosema. Our study supports the monophyly of Adenodolichos, Dunbaria, Flemingia and Cajanus, but Chrysoscias and Bolusafra formed a dade that is sister to a group of Rhynchosia spp. Paracalyx was resolved as paraphyletic and nested among African Rhynchosia spp. Divergence time analysis suggested that the Eriosema lineages diverged 6.5-10.7 Mya. Two major lineages have diversified in Eriosema, one including most of the African species (4.41-6.68 Mya), the other mainly composed of the South American cerrado species (3.56-5.78 Mya). These results revealed that Eriosema is a recent and tropical savanna-adapted group, and its diversification occurred in the late Miocene in parallel with the expansion of C-4 grasslands. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-01-01 Zornia latifolia is a plant suspected to possess psychoactive properties and marketed as a marijuana substitute under the name ‘maconha brava’. In this study, the effects of fractions obtained from a 2-propanol extract of aerial portions of the plant were determined by multielectrode array (MEA) analyses on cultured networks of rat cortical neurons. Lipophilic (ZL_lipo, mainly containing flavonoid aglycones), and hydrophilic (ZL_hydro, mainly containing flavonoid glycosides) fractions were initially obtained from the raw extract. ZL_lipo significantly inhibited mean firing rate (MFR) and mean bursting rate (MBR) of MEA recordings, while ZL_hydro induced no inhibition. Column chromatography separation of ZL_lipo yielded five fractions (ZL1-ZL5), among which ZL1 induced the strongest MFR and MBR inhibition. NMR and HPLC-MS analyses of ZL1 revealed the prevalence of the common flavonoids genistein (1) and apigenin (2) (in about a 1:1 ratio), and the presence of the rare flavone syzalterin (6,8-dimethylapigenin) (3) as a minor compound. Exposures of MEA to apigenin and genistein standards did not induce the MFR and MBR inhibition observed with ZL1, whereas exposure to syzalterin standard or to a 1:9 mixture syzalterin-genistein induced effects similar to ZL1. These inhibitory effects were comparable to that observed with high-THC hashish, possibly accounting for the plant psychoactive properties. Data indicate that Z. latifolia, currently marketed as a free herbal product, should be subjected to measures of control. In addition, syzalterin showed distinctive pharmacological properties, opening the way to its possible exploitation as a neuroactive drug. Comments about the ecology, distribution, preliminary conservation status as well as its morphological relationships and flowering and fruiting season of the new species, are provided. Additionally, a secretory structure survey of the leaflets of the new species and its related congeners is presented. All species studied share the presence of secretory and mucilaginous idioblasts in their leaflets, but the position of these cells types serves to differentiate them. Adesmia ser. Bicolores has unveiled a new species from southern Brazil. Adesmia miottoae is described and illustrated here. Its geographic distribution, phenology, conservation status and morphological similarities with its closest relatives, Adesmia punctata and A. incana, are presented. The species is distinguished by glandular trichomes covering all the aerial parts of the plant, except the corolla. These trichomes are shorter than those of Adesmia punctata. Additionally, a detailed anatomical description of the leaflet blade is provided. The pollen morphology of 49 species of Eriosema and 13 of Rhynchosia were studied using scanning electron microscopy to identify diagnostic characteristics that could aid in the taxonomic circumscription of those genera. The pollen grains analysed were obtained from specimens deposited in the BOTU, CEPEC, IPA, HRB, HUEFS, OUPR, P, S, UFC, and UFRJ herbaria. The species studied demonstrated that the pollen grains dispersed in monads, are isopolar or heteropolar, triporate or tricolporate, angulaperturate; with the endo-aperture membrane generally psilate and the exine largely reticulate heterobrocate, except for R. claussenii which is microreticulate. We discuss these diverse characteristics, including the ornamentation of the endo-aperture membrane and the margins of the apertures and reticula, to obtain information that possibly could be used to differentiate between the two genera. Although this proved not to be possible using pollen, because many characters overlap between the two genera, nevertheless some species display unique, taxonomically useful, characters, such as R. platyphylla which has an apocolpium in the shape of a 'Y', E. bauchiense with a verrucate exine ornamentation, and E. benthamianum with fossulate lumina. Additionally, two pollen types were identified in Eriosema, one group of species with 3-porate pollen grains and the other composed of species with 3-colporate grains. Previous studies suggested different base chromosome numbers, hampering the understanding of karyotype evolution in dalbergioid legumes. In this study, we integrated chromosome numbers from the literature with phylogenetic data and new cytogenetic data for six species aiming to clarify the paths of karyotype evolution. We could confirm the base chromosome number of dalbergioid legumes asx = 10, which was constant for the three dalbergioid clades, namely Adesmia, Dalbergia, and Pterocarpus. However, we found alternative base chromosome numbers for some genera, which illustrate the two main mechanisms of chromosome changes found in dalbergioids: polyploidy and dysploidy. Considering the first diverging lineages in the phylogeny, polyploidy and dysploidy could be detected in seven and three nodes, respectively, with two out of the three dysploidy events associated with polyploidy. Nevertheless, considering the chromosome changes within species, the descendent dysploidy was the most common event in dalbergioid legumes. Such a high frequency of dysploidy highlights the importance of studying multiple populations from each species. In addition, the chromosome banding revealed DAPI(+)bands, which is not commonly found in plants, as a possible chromosome marker forStylosanthes. The chromosome banding analysis has taxonomic potential and could be explored in future studies to better understand the complex taxonomic groups inside dalbergioid legumes. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-07-01 G-fibers have been widely studied in tension wood, but few studies are available on aerial and underground organs of shrub and subshrub, specially comparing those organs of the same plant. The goal of this study is to compare the general pattern of G-fibers distribution, and the structure and histochemistry of G-fibers walls between aerial and underground organs in 19 Eriosema taxa occurring in the tropical savanna, locally called cerrado. The samples were processed according to standard techniques in plant anatomy and histochemistry. G-fibers occurred throughout the vegetative body and were exclusively extraxylary in organs with primary growth and extraxylary and xylary in organs with incipient secondary growth. G-fibers were more abundant and had a thicker G-layer in the underground organs. In all the organs analyzed, the G-fibers were identified by the presence of a non-lignified internal translucent layer (G-layer) sometimes occupying the entire lumen of the fiber. The abundance and wide occurrence of G-fibers in the vegetative axis of Eriosema plants may represent an adaptive mechanism and may explain why plants that belong to this genus are able to survive in adverse Cerrado conditions. We suggest that the conditions of the Cerrado environment may stimulate the differentiation of gelatinous fibers in these plants. In addition, the ecophysiological significance of the G-fibers, we emphasize their taxonomic value as a unifying character of the Eriosema genus. Morfologicamente é caracterizado principalmente pelas flores dispostas em inflorescências espiciformes com bractéolas peltadas aos pares, encobrindo o cálice, tanto na flor e muitas vezes no fruto. O presente estudo teve como objetivo estudar as espécies de Zornia que ocorrem no estado da Paraíba. Para tanto foram realizados estudos morfológicos com base em materiais coletados e principalmente em coleções depositadas nos herbários EAN, JPB, IPA e PEUFR. A identificação dos materiais foi realizada com o auxílio da bibliografia especializada, complementada pela análise de imagens digitais dos tipos. Para cada uma das espécies foi elaborada uma descrição, comentário taxonômico e morfológico, adicionalmente uma chave de identificação foi feita para todo o gênero. Neste estudo foram registradas sete espécies: Zornia brasiliensis, Z. latifolia, Z. leptophylla, Z. guanipensis, Z. myriadena, Z. reticulata e Z. sericea. As espécies Zornia guanipensis, Z. myriadena, e Z. sericea constituem novos registros de ocorrências para o estado. As espécies Zornia myriadena, Z. reticulata, Z. brasiliensis e Z. leptophylla têm distribuição exclusiva na Caatinga. Já Z. guanipensis ocorre na Mata Atlântica, em restinga, enquanto que Z. sericea e Z. latifolia possuem distribuição em ambos os domínios fitogeográficos. The genus Zornia with ca. 80 species is composed of two subgenera, Myriadena and Zornia, the last with three sections (Zornia, Isophylla and Anisophylla) and presents a pantropical distribution. Morphologically it is characterized mainly by the flowers arranged in spiciform inflorescences with paired peltade bracteoles, protecting or hiding the calyx of the flower and often the fruit. This research aimed to the species of Zornia in the state Paraíba. Morphological studies were on materials collected and mainly in specimens deposited in the herbaria EAN, JPB, IPA and PEUFR. The species were identified consulting specialized bibliography, complemented by the analysis of digital pictures of the types. For each species was provided description and taxonomic and morphological comments, additionally a key for identification for the genus was also provided. The present seven species were recognized: Zornia brasiliensis, Z. latifolia, Z. leptophylla, Z. guanipensis, Z. myriadena, Z. reticulata, and Z. sericea. The species Zornia guanipensis, Z. myriadena, and Z. sericea are new records for the Paraiba state. The species Z. myriadena, Z. reticulata, Z. brasiliensis e Z. leptophylla have exclusive distribution in the Caatinga. Already Z. guanipensis occurred mainly in the Atlantic Forest specially in the restinga, while Z. sericea e Z. latifolia were distributed in both the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga. The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, and playing a key role in the GSPC. To meet the GSPC goals of Target 1 and facilitate access to plant diversity, Brazil committed to preparing the List of Species of the Brazilian Flora (2008-2015) and the Brazilian Flora 2020 (2016-present). Managing all the information associated with such great biodiversity has proven to be an extremely challenging task. Here, we synthesize the history of these projects, focusing on the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach adopted to develop and manage the inclusion of all the knowledge generated though digital information systems. We further describe the methods used, challenges faced, and strategies adopted, as well as summarize advances to date and prospects for completing the Brazilian flora in 2020.

These species have diversified throughout dry environments where there are high temperatures and strong light. The subtribe stands out because all its representatives have vesicular glands. In addition, bulbous-based and capitate trichomes are important secretory structures present in all genera of the Cajaninae. We analyzed the ultrastructure and histochemistry of these glandular trichome types in leaflets of the three species of the subtribe. Using transmission electron microscopy and histochemical analyses, we link the glandular secretions to subcellular structures. We here report for the first time the type of exudate and ultrastructure of the glands of subtribe Cajaninae. Terpenoids and phenolics were confirmed by histochemistry tests, and we observed that the organelles responsible for biosynthesis of oils are the most representative in these glands. Each glandular trichome showed particular ultrastructural features compatible with the compounds produced. We suggest that these glandular trichomes, with their respective exudates, act in defense against herbivory and against possible damage by ultraviolet radiation. O check-list das Leguminosae do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul conta com a colaboracao de 17 pesquisadores, nove do estado e oito de outras unidades da federacao. Em riqueza destacam-se Arachis L. (30 spp.), Desmodium Desv. (25 spp.), Aeschynomene L. (21 spp.), Stylosanthes Sw. (17 spp.) e Crotalaria L. (16 spp.) em Papilionoideae. O genero Mimosa L. agrega 30 taxons (17 spp., 10 variedades, tres subespecies) seguido por Senegalia Raf. (sete spp.) e Calliandra Benth. (cinco spp.) em Mimosoideae. Chamaecrista Moench (22 spp.), Senna Mill. (17 spp.) e Bauhinia L. (15 spp.) detem o maior numero de especies, em Caesalpinioideae. De modo geral a riqueza da familia concentra-se em nove generos, com 15-29 especies, e a maioria esta representado por uma a tres especies. Leguminosae, uma das mais representativas da flora brasileira, em Mato Grosso do Sul detem expressiva riqueza especifica com 15% do total de especies de leguminosas estimadas para o Brasil.

The classification of the legume family proposed here addresses the long-known non-monophyly of the traditionally recognised subfamily Caesalpinioideae, by recognising six robustly supported monophyletic subfamilies. This new classification uses as its framework the most comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of legumes to date, based on plastid matK gene sequences, and including near-complete sampling of genera (698 of the currently recognised 765 genera) and ca. 20% (3696) of known species. The matK gene region has been the most widely sequenced across the legumes, and in most legume lineages, this gene region is sufficiently variable to yield well-supported clades. This analysis resolves the same major clades as in other phylogenies of whole plastid and nuclear gene sets (with much sparser taxon sampling). Our analysis improves upon previous studies that have used large phylogenies of the Leguminosae for addressing evolutionary questions, because it maximises generic sampling and provides a phylogenetic tree that is based on a fully curated set of sequences that are vouchered and taxonomically validated. The phylogenetic trees obtained and the underlying data are available to browse and download, facilitating subsequent analyses that require evolutionary trees. Here we propose a new community-endorsed classification of the family that reflects the phylogenetic structure that is consistently resolved and recognises six subfamilies in Leguminosae: a recircumscribed Caesalpinioideae DC., Cercidoideae Legume Phylogeny Working Group (stat. nov.), Detarioideae Burmeist., Dialioideae Legume Phylogeny Working Group (stat. nov.), Duparquetioideae Legume Phylogeny Working Group (stat. nov.), and Papilionoideae DC. The traditionally recognised subfamily Mimosoideae is a distinct clade nested within the recircum-scribed Caesalpinioideae and is referred to informally as the mimosoid clade pending a forthcoming formal tribal and/or clade-based classification of the new Caesalpinioideae. We provide a key for subfamily identification, descriptions with diagnostic charactertistics for the subfamilies, figures illustrating their floral and fruit diversity, and lists of genera by subfamily. This new classification of Leguminosae represents a consensus view of the international legume systematics community; it invokes both compromise and practicality of use.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-11-01 Poiretia Vent. is a Leguminosae (Papilionoideae, Dalbergieae) genus comprising 12 species which are distinguished mainly by external morphology of the leaves and inflorescences; however, overlapping in variation of several morphological traits has led to taxonomic problems, including erroneous identifications of species and varieties. Furthermore, attributes of recognized importance among legumes, such as characteristics of secretory structures, have been neglected in the distinction of Poiretia species. Here we described the leaflet blade anatomy of all 12 Poiretia species emphasizing the internal secretory structures in order to identify characters with potential taxonomic value. Leaflets were obtained from herbarium and from plants occurring in natural environments. Samples were processed according to standard techniques for plant anatomy. The leaflets of P. angustifolia and P. punctata were hypostomatic, whereas those of the other species were amphistomatic. The adaxial face of the main vein was flat in P. bahiana, P. coriifolia, P. latifolia and P. unifoliolata, slightly convex in P. elegans and concave in the other species. Bundle sheath extensions were observed in eight of the 12 species. A fiber cap with lignified walls was present externally to the phloem of the midrib, except P. bahiana, P. latifolia, P. marginata and P. punctata. Secretory cavities were present in the mesophyll of all species; in P. angustifolia, P. latifolia, P. longipes, P. marginata and P. tetraphylla secretory cavities occurred in the region of the mesophyll near the midrib, while in P. latifolia the secretory cavities occurred in the cortex of the midrib. The number of epithelial layers varied among species, with secretory cavities having two to six cell layers. Idioblasts in the epidermis of P. crenata, P. latifolia and P. mattogrossensis were quite voluminous. The distinctive characteristics observed among the species were used to develop an identification key for the species of Poiretia. Furthermore, it is an aculeate species, with multijugate leaves, white stamens, and fruits also covered by glandular trichomes. A herbaria survey and fieldwork only recorded this species as occurring on sandstone outcrops of the city Cacapava do Sul, Brazil. The species may be confused with other species of Mimosa sect. Batocaulon ser. Stipellares such as M. bifurca, M. sobralii and M. lepidota. However, features such as absence/presence of aculei, stamens color, habitat, and flower features are useful for distinguishing them from the new species. Here, we provide notes on morphology, geographic distribution, as well as anatomical detail of its glandular trichomes and content. Finally, we discussed the taxonomic significance of the micromorphology of glandular trichomes and their content in Mimosa ser. Stipellares as well as the potential applicability of such features to better understand the morphology of this series. O trabalho tem por base coletas de campo e a análise morfológica de materiais depositados em herbários. Foram encontradas 11 espécies nativas distribuídas em sete gêneros: Aeschynomene evenia, A. viscidula, Andira legalis, A. nitida, Arachis pintoi, Machaerium hirtum, Pterocarpus rohrii, Stylosanthes capitata, S. guianensis, S. viscosa e Zornia latifolia. Desse total de espécies, seis com hábito subarbustivo, quatro com hábito arbóreo e uma herbácea. A ocorrência de Aeschynomene evenia, Andira legalis, Arachis pintoi e Stylosanthes gracilis é registrada pela primeira vez para o Estado da Paraíba. ABSTRACT This work presents a taxonomic study of species of Leguminosae - Dalbergieae from Mata do Buraquinho, João Pessoa, Paraíba State, which is a mixed area composed by elements of Rain Forest, the Amazonian flora, and the Bahian Hileia. The study was based on field collections and morphological analysis of herbarium specimens. As a result, 11 native species distributed into seven genera were found: Aeschynomene evenia, A. viscidula, Andira legalis, A. nitida, Arachis pintoi, Machaerium hirtum, Pterocarpus rohrii, Stylosanthes capitata, S. guianensis, S. viscosa, and Zornia latifolia. Of these species, six are bushes, four are trees, and one is an herb. The occurrence of Aeschynomene evenia, Andira legalis, Arachis pintoi, and Stylosanthes gracilis is recorded for the first time in the state of Paraíba. Identification key, descriptions, comments on the morphology and illustrations for the species are presented. No Brasil são encontradas 256 espécies, sendo que 149 delas aparecem somente em Minas Gerais, o que corresponde mais da metade da diversidade do gênero no país. A área selecionada para o estudo, o Parque Estadual do Rio Preto (PERP), pertence à Cadeia do Espinhaço. A vegetação é composta principalmente por fitofisionomias de Cerrado e Campo rupestre existindo também áreas de matas ciliares e de galerias. O estudo em questão teve como objetivo realizar o levantamento florístico e um estudo taxonômico de Chamaecrista no PERP, abrangendo chave de identificação das espécies e descrições taxonômicas das mesmas. As coletas foram realizadas dentro de um período de dois anos, por meio de caminhadas assistemáticas. O material coletado foi identificado e depositado na coleção do Herbário OUPR. Foram coletados e descritos 19 táxons que compreendem às seções Absus, Chamaecrista e Xerocalyx. Abstract The genus Chamaecrista has a pantropical distribution and it is well represented in the Brazilian flora, mainly in “campos rupestres” and Riparian forests. In Brazil, 256 species are found, of which 149 are found only in Minas Gerais, corresponding more than a half of genus diversity in the country. The area selected for the study, Parque Estadual do Rio Preto (PERP), belongs to Espinhaço Range. The vegetation is composed mainly of physiognomies of cerrado and “campos rupestres”, also existing areas of gallery forests and galleries. The objective of this study was to carry out the floristic and taxonomic survey of Chamaecrista at PERP, to elaborate key of identification of the species and taxonomic descriptions of the same ones. The collections were carried out within a period of two years, through unsystematic walks. The collected material was identified and deposited in the OUPR and BOTU Herbaria. 19 taxa were collected and described that comprises the Absus, Chamaecrista and Xerocalyx sections. Resumo Rhynchosia possui distribuição pantropical, apresentando dois principais centros de diversidade para as cerca de 230 espécies, um na África (ca. 140 spp.) e outro nas Américas, onde é registrada a ocorrência de 55 espécies. Este trabalho consiste em um estudo taxônomico do gênero Rhynchosia para o Brasil onde foram encontradas 19 espécies: Rhynchosia arenicola, R. balansae, R. claussenii, R. corylifolia, R. diversifolia, R. edulis, R. hauthalii, R. lateritia, R. leucophylla, R. lineata, R. melanocarpa, R. minima, R. naineckensis, R. phaseoloides, R. platyphylla, R. reticulata, R. rojasii, R. senna, R. schomburgkii. Foram registradas duas novas ocorrências no Brasil, R. claussenii no estado do Maranhão e R. edulis no estado do Espírito Santo. Foi realizado um estudo morfológico para reavaliar os caracteres diagnósticos para pronta identificação das espécies, facilitando a delimitação dos táxons. Além disso, foram fornecidas ilustrações, chave de identificação, descrições e breves comentários, além de dados de distribuição geográfica. Abstract Rhynchosia presents a pantropical distribution, with two main centers of diversity for about 230 species, one in Africa (ca. 140 spp.) and the other in the American continents, where 55 species are recorded. F. Gmel., all predominantly South American genera except for Zornia which has a pantmpical distribution. These taxa share a shrubby or herbaceous habit with glands present on some part of the plant (e.g., stems, leaflets). However, the evolutionary relationships of the full range of secretory structures observed in previous studies are not fully understood. Thus, the goal of this study is to characterize and compare the occurrence and morphology of these glands in leaflets of species of the Adesmia clade. In addition, secretory structures were showed in a phylogenetic context in members of the Adesmia clade. The mature subterminal leaflets of 81 taxa, 79 from the Adesmia clade and two species of the Ptemcarpus clade, were sampled from herbaria and living specimens. All genera of the Adesmia clade shared the presence of secretory, mucilaginous idioblasts in the epidermis of their leaflets. Genera of the clade inhabit dry environments, including open areas and highland grasslands (e.g., Savanna, Patagonian steppe, and the Andes). The presence of mucilage in the epidermis of these genera might be an adaptation to reduce water loss through transpiration, providing a hydrophilic interface between the leaflet surface and the environment, protecting plants from intensive radiation. Phenolic idioblasts were found in the mesophyll of Amicia and Zornia. Secretory cavities were observed in Amicia, Poiretia and Zornia. The occurrence of secretory cavities only in these three phylogenetically closely related genera is considered a synapomorphic character as shown by our character reconstruction analysis. The presence of secretory idioblasts is a unifying characteristic of all genera of the Adesmia clade. Considering the morphological similarity among the species of these two genera, which are vegetatively almost indistinguishable, we are here transferring the species of Chaetocalyx to Nissolia. Type information for all accepted species of Nissolia in its new circumscription is presented, including 16 new lectotype designations and the designation of one epitype. Diagnostic characters and information about the geographical distribution of each species are also noted. Nissolia s.l. is now represented by 30 taxa (29 species plus one variety) distributed from North to South America, with two centers of diversity found in Mexico and Brazil. In this work, we demonstrate that these commercial products contain a different Fabacea, i.e., Stylosanthes guianensis, a cheaper plant, widely cultivated in tropical regions as a fodder legume. We were provided with plant samples of true Zornia latifolia from Brazil, and carried out a thorough comparison of the two species. The assignment of commercial samples was performed by means of micro-morphological analysis, DNA barcoding, and partial phytochemical investigation. We observed that Z. latifolia contains large amounts of flavonoid di-glycosides derived from luteolin, apigenin, and genistein, while in S. guianensis lesser amounts of flavonoids, mainly derived from quercetin, were found. It is likely that the spasmolytic and anxiolytic properties of Z. latifolia, as reported in traditional medicine, derive from its contents in apigenin and/or genistein. Eriosema hatschbachii, a new species of Leguminosae (Papilionoideae) from Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described and illustrated. The taxon is morphologically similar to E. floribundum Benth. and E. pycnanthum Benth. var. pycnanthum, but differs mainly in having many parallel secondary veins on the leaflets (similar to the venation seen on nearly all species of the genus Tephrosia) and erect stems with leaves only near the apex.

The genus Zornia has a pantropical distribution and comprises 80 species in two subgenera (Myriadena, Zornia) and three sections (Zornia, Isophylla, Anisophylla). The genus is characterized mainly by flowers arranged in a spiciform inflorescence, with paired peltate bracteoles protecting each flower, and stipules that resemble the bracteoles. Phylogenetically Zornia is a member of the informal Adesmia clade of the Dalbergioid group, being most closely related to the predominantly South American genera Poiretia and Amicia. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the plastid trnL-trnF intron and spacer, including multiple accessions of species of all subgenera and sections, support the monophyly of Zornia and indicate that Poiretia is sister to Zornia. All traditional subgenera and sections of Zornia are resolved as paraor polyphyletic in our study. Nevertheless, two major clades can be recognized. Time-calibrated phylogenetic analyses suggest that most Zornia species diverged 8–10 Ma and reveal that only one migratory event occurred within the genus ca. 5 Ma from America to the Old World probably via long-distance dispersal.

A survey of the secretory structures of leaflets has been carried out for five taxa of the genus Zornia J.F. Gmel. to assess possible taxonomic value of the glands, taking into account that these taxa, Zornia curvata Mohlenbr., Z. gemella Willd. ex Vogel, Z. glabra Desv., Z. latifolia Sm. and Z. reticulata Sm., have overlapping diagnostic characters. The leaflet secretory structures of the five studied taxa of Zornia were mucilage epidermis, mucilage cavities, and idioblasts secreting phenolic compounds. Mucilage epidermis is found in all five aforementioned taxa. Mucilage cavities are observed on both epidermal surfaces of the leaflets in four taxa, the exception being Z. glabra, whose cavities occur only on the abaxial surface. Idioblasts secreting phenolic compounds were detected only in the mesophyll of Z. latifolia and Z. reticulata. The joint occurrence of mucilage epidermis with mucilage cavities seems to be of unifying value for the five taxa analyzed. The position of mucilage cavities and the occurrence of secretory idioblasts in the mesophyll of the leaflets are of diagnostic value, providing a key to enable identification of the taxa studied. This study reveals that the secretory structures provide important information in support of systematic studies of the Leguminosae. In relation to the five taxa of Zornia studied, current results suggest recognition of four species: Z. curvata, Z. glabra, Z. latifolia, and Z. reticulata.

While studying the species of Zornia J. F. Gmel. (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae, Dalbergieae) from Brazil for taxonomic revision of the genus, eight lectotypifications are proposed: Hedysarum bifolium Vell., Z. diphylla (L.) Pers. var. bernardinensis Chodat & Hassl., Z. diphylla var. elatior Benth., Z. diphylla f. ciliata Chodat & Hassl., Z. myriadena Benth., Z. perforata Vogel, Z. reticulata Sm., and Z. sericea Moric., as well as two neotypifications for Z. brasiliensis Vogel and Z. ovata Vogel. Macro-and micro-morphological characters of the fruit articles provide excellent diagnostic taxonomic characters (including fruit shape, fruit article surface, presence/absence of glands, presence/absence of bristles, and presence/absence of hairs) to distinguish among the brazilian taxa. results generally support the species recognised for brazil although the micro-morphological characters have limited taxonomic value within some species complexes, in which taxa can be better differentiated using other morphological characteristics. the results of macro-morphological analyses show that the morphology of fruit articles is related to the geographical distribution pattern of each species and is a good source of morphological character to distinguish the species of Zornia. we present here an inedit identification key, based on the loment morphology, to distinguish the brazilian species of Zornia. Zornia grandiflora Fort.-Perez & A. M. G. Azevedo (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae), a new species from Bahia and Pernambuco states in northeastern Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is assigned to section Anisophylla Mohlenbr. of subgenus Zornia J. F. Gmel. Zornia grandiflora is similar to Z. sericea Moric., sharing erect stems and ovate to elliptic bracteoles. It can be distinguished from Z. sericea and from other species within Zornia sect. Anisophylla by the large standard (13–17 mm long).

Zornia decussata, a new species from Venezuela, is described and illustrated. It belongs to sect. Anisophylla of subgen. Zornia and occurs in the Federal Territory of Amazonas, in the region of Rincones de Chacorro. The species is characterised mainly by its decussate bracteoles which lack an auricle, by the presence of a cataphyll between the stipules and by the delicate habit of the plant.

Zornia subsessilis, a new species from Serra do Cabral, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, is described and illustrated on the basis of field and herbarium studies. It belongs to Zornia section Zornia of subgenus Zornia and it appears to be restricted to “campo rupestre” (rocky fields) within the “cerrado” biome. This new species is characterized by its sessile to subsessile leaves, fruits with articles 4 to 5 mm long and with bristles up to 3.5 mm long.

In this genus, a problem that has been found is related to the circumscription of the ten species that were included previously in Z. diphylla (L.) In the phenetic study, the data were analyzed using the UPGMA and PCA methods, and both methods showed evidence of two clustering well defined, one group was made up of Z. reticulata and Z. glabra, and the other group was made up of Z. latifolia, Z. gemella and Z. curvata, but with possibility of separation of two subgroups at each one. 2) Survey of the secretory structures and their taxonomic significance in the leaflets of american species of Z. diphylla (L.) Pers. complex (Leguminosae, apilionoideae, Aeschynomeneae). Eriosema tozziae, a new species of Leguminosae (Papilionoideae, Phaseoleae, Cajaninae) from Minas Gerais is described and illustrated. Similar to E. defoliatum, it differs morphologically from the latter by the persistent leaves in the reproductive phase (vs. caducous in E. defoliatum) and the shorter inflorescences (10–13 cm long vs. 15–30 cm long in E. defoliatum). An identification key for the Eriosema species in Minas Gerais is also provided.

Estudos taxonômicos prévios relacionados a ambos os gêneros foram conduzidos apenas em áreas pontuais de diferentes regiões do país, incluindo descrições de espécies novas. Com relação à região Nordeste, esses estudos ainda são incipientes. Objetivou-se realizar o estudo taxonômico das espécies desses gêneros ocorrentes na região Nordeste do país. Para tanto, foram estudadas coleções de 18 herbários e provenientes de coletas. Foram registrados 14 táxons, sendo sete de Eriosema (E. campestre, E. congestum, E. crinitum, E. floribundum, E. rufum, E. simplicifolium e E. venulosum), e sete de Rhynchosia (R. claussenii, R. edulis, R. melanocarpa, R. minima, R. naineckensis, R. phaseoloides e R. reticulata). Abstract Eriosema and Rhynchosia are the only genera of subtribe Cajaninae which include species that occur in tropical and subtropical regions in both hemispheres. Previous taxonomic studies related to both genera were carried out only in specific areas of different regions of the country, including descriptions of new species. Regarding the Northeast region, these studies are still incipient. This work aimed to perform the taxonomic study of the species of both genera that occur in the Northeast region of the country. To accomplish this, voucher specimens deposited at 18 herbaria and individuals collected by our team were analyzed. In total, 14 taxa were recorded, seven belonging to Eriosema (E. campestre, E. congestum, E. crinitum, E. floribundum, E. rufum, E. simplicifolium, and E. venulosum), and seven belonging to Rhynchosia (R. claussenii, R. edulis, R. melanocarpa, R. minima, R. naineckensis, R. phaseoloides, and R. reticulate). The species R. claussenii and E. floribundum are cited for the first time in Northeast. New records were also found in some states such as E. campestre (Maranhão), E. floribundum (Bahia), E. rufum (Ceará, Piauí), R. edulis (Alagoas), and R. reticulata (Pernambuco). O trabalho contribui para o conhecimento sobre as leguminosas da Serra do Cipó e da própria área de estudo, se inserindo na perspectiva atual da necessidade de se conhecer melhor as floras locais e de formar taxonomistas. O trabalho de campo e estudo de coleções de herbários indicaram a existência de 13 gêneros e 47 espécies: Aeschynomene (9 spp), Andira (3 spp), Chaetocalyx (1sp), Dalbergia (4 spp), Hymenolobium (1 sp), Machaerium (10 spp), Platymiscium (1 sp), Platypodium (1 sp), Poiretia (3 spp), Pterocarpus (1 sp), Stylosanthes (6 spp), Vatairea (1sp) e Zornia (6 spp). Observou-se um aumento de mais de 50% em relação ao número de espécies presentes no checklist inicial (Giulietti et al. 1987), principalmente devido a ampliação das áreas de coletas e inclusão de diferentes fitofisionomias The study of Dalbergieae sensu lato is part of the project \"Flora da Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais\" and provides identification keys, descriptions, illustrations and comments on geographic distribution and phenology for all genera and species of the tribe present in this region. The selected study area has a great scientific importance due to its \"campos rupestres\" and their big amount of endemism. Dalbergieae s.l. as defined by Lavin et al. (2001) has gone through significant changes in its circumscription, and needs studies that clarify the relations amongst its genera. The present work contributes to the knowledge of the legumes of Serra do Cipó and also of the study area itself, in accord with the current perspective of a better awareness of local floras and formation of taxonomists. The field work and herbaria study showed the occurrence of 13 genera and 47 species: : Aeschynomene (9 spp), Andira (3 spp), Chaetocalyx (1sp), Dalbergia (4 spp), Hymenolobium (1 sp), Machaerium (10 spp), Platymiscium (1 sp), Platypodium (1 sp), Poiretia (3 spp), Pterocarpus (1 sp), Stylosanthes (6 spp), Vatairea (1sp) and Zornia (6 spp). O principal objetivo deste trabalho é o levantamento e estudo taxonômico das espécies das tribos Crotalarieae (Benth.) Hutch. e Genisteae (Bronn) Dumort. de Leguminosae-Papilionoideae, que ocorrem na Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais. A Serra do Cipó está localizada na porção sul da Cadeia do Espinhaço, um conjunto de elevações que se estende por cerca de 1000 km na direção Norte-Sul, entre os estados de Minas Gerais e Bahia. Inserida no Domínio do Cerrado, a Serra do Cipó apresenta os campos rupestres como o principal tipo vegetacional, associados aos afloramentos rochosos e solos litólicos encontrados nas áreas mais altas das serras. Os campos rupestres mineiros estão frequentemente entremeados por fitofisionomias de cerrado, matas ciliares, capões de mata e brejos estacionais ou perenes. Expedições a campo e levantamento dos principais herbários que abrigam coleções da região, levaram ao reconhecimento de 18 espécies, pertencentes a 2 gêneros dos grupos estudados: 16 espécies de Crotalaria L. (Crotalarieae), e de 2 espécies de Lupinus L. (Genisteae). O capitulo 1 da dissertação compreende o levantamento das espécies e o seu estudo taxonômico segundo o modelo da Série Flora da Serra do Cipó, contendo chaves de identificação, descrições morfológicas e ilustrações dos gêneros e espécies, além de comentários sobre sua distribuição geográfica, fenologia e variabilidade, editados no formato da publicação. O capitulo 2 trata de um estudo de anatomia foliar realizado com as 16 espécies de Crotalaria que ocorrem na área estudada, com o objetivo de levantar caracteres que possam auxiliar na circunscrição das espécies. Esse estudo utilizou amostras de folhas obtidas de material herborizado e técnicas usuais em anatomia vegetal, incluindo análises em microscopia de luz e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Muitos dos caracteres analisados mostraram-se relativamente uniformes, no entanto alguns deles revelaram-se úteis no diagnóstico de espécies. Destacam-se dentre estes alguns caracteres relacionados à textura, a aspectos de venação, tais como a formação de aréolas e modo de inserção das nervuras secundárias à nervura mediana, e principalmente à epiderme The main goal of this study is to provide a taxonomic survey of the tribes Crotalarieae (Benth.) Hutch. and Genisteae (Bronn) Dumort. (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) in the Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais. The Serra do Cipó is located in the southern portion of the Espinhaço range of mountains, which extends for about 1000 km in north-south direction, from the state of Minas Gerais to the state of Bahia. The Serra do Cipó belongs to the Cerrado Domain, and its main vegetation type is the Campo Rupestre, a mostly herbaceous formation with scattered shrubs and treelets on litholic or sandy soils around rocky outcrops,found in higher areas of the mountains. On lower elevations other phytophysiognomies are found, mostly patches of savannahs formations (cerrados and cerradões), gallery forests, montane forests and swamps. Field expeditions and the examination of herbarium collections led to the recognition of 16 species of Crotalaria L. (Crotalarieae), and 2 species of Lupinus L. (Genisteae) in the area. The first chapter of the dissertation comprises a taxonomic survey of the species of these two genera occurring in the Serra do Cipó. It contains keys for identification, morphological descriptions and illustrations of the species, and comments on their geographical distribution, phenology and morphological variation. The second chapter presents an anatomical study of leaves of 16 species of Crotalaria occurring in the Serra do Cipó, aiming to provide additional characters for the circumscription of the species. Leaf samples were obtained from herbarium specimens and standard techniques in plant anatomy were used, including light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Many of the characters analyzed were non-informative, but the following ones were useful to recognize several species: characters related to lamina texture, to the epidermis, and to the venation pattern, specially the formation of areoles and mode of insertion of the secondary veins to midvein

O presente trabalho refere-se ao estudo taxonômico de Leguminosae - \"Caesalpinioideae\" do Parque Nacional do Caparaó. O parque está localizado na divisa dos Estados de Minas Gerais e Espírito Santo entre as coordenadas 20º19\'- 20º37\' S e 41º43\' - 41º53\' W, a 300km de Vitória, e a 340km de Belo Horizonte. O Parque Nacional do Caparaó situa-se numa região montanhosa, que compreende parte da Serra do Mar e da Serra da Mantiqueira. Seu ponto culminante é o Pico da Bandeira com 2890m de altitude e as áreas mais baixas variam entre 1000 e 1500 m. Quanto à vegetação, é bastante variada, formada por florestas e campos de altitude. Leguminosae possui distribuição cosmopolita, incluindo cerca de 727 gêneros e 19327 espécies. No Brasil, ocorrem aproximadamente 212 gêneros e 2729 espécies, amplamente distribuídas em todo o território nacional. As mais significativas utilizações comerciais de espécies de Leguminosae estão no fato de serem fonte de alimento, elementos florísticos em ecossistemas naturais e ornamentais. O presente estudo baseou-se no levantamento bibliográfico, consulta a herbários nacionais e observações de campo. Constam também descrições, chaves de identificação, ilustrações, e comentários. De acordo com o levantamento, o Parque Nacional do Caparaó está representado por 20 espécies e duas variedades de Leguminosae-\"Caesalpinioideae\", distribuídos em 8 gêneros. The present study refers to the taxonomic study of the Leguminosae - \"Caesalpinioideae\" of the Caparaó National Park. The park is located on the border of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo States, between the geographic coordinates 20º19\'- 20º37\' S and 41º43\' - 41º53\' W, 300 km from Vitória and 340 km from Belo Horizonte. The Caparaó National Park is located in a mountainous region, which comprises part of the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira. Its highest point is the Pico da Bandeira with 2,890 meters of altitude and the lower areas ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters. The vegetation is diverse and consists of forests and altitude fields. Leguminosae has a cosmopolitan distribution, including about 727 genera and 19,327 species. In Brazil there are 212 genera and 2,729 species (estimated figure), widely distributed throughout the national territory. The most significant commercial uses of Leguminosae species are the fact this family providing a food source for mankind, floristic elements in natural ecosystems and also ornamental. The present study was based on bibliographic review, consults to national herbaria, and fields observation. Descriptions, identification keys, illustrations, and comments are also presented about each species. According to the survey, the Caparaó National Park is represented by 20 species and two varieties of Leguminosae-\"Caesalpinioideae\", distributed in 8 genera.
