We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral-timing measurements of the prototypical Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. The source was observed with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST in June 2023 at a MIR luminosity L(MIR)~10^{36} erg/s exceeding past IR levels by about a factor of 10. By contrast, the X-ray flux is much fainter than the historical average, in the source's now-persistent 'obscured' state. The MIRI low-resolution spectrum shows a plethora of emission lines, the strongest of which are consistent with recombination in the hydrogen Pfund (Pf) series and higher. Low amplitude (~1%) but highly significant peak-to-peak photometric variability is found on timescales of ~1,000 s. The brightest Pf(6-5) emission line lags the continuum. Though difficult to constrain accurately, this lag is commensurate with light-travel timescales across the outer accretion disc or with expected recombination timescales inferred from emission line diagnostics. Using the emission line as a bolometric indicator suggests a moderate (~5-30% Eddington) intrinsic accretion rate. Multiwavelength monitoring shows that JWST caught the source close in-time to unprecedentedly bright MIR and radio long-term flaring. Assuming a thermal bremsstrahlung origin for the MIRI continuum suggests an unsustainably high mass-loss rate during this time unless the wind remains bound, though other possible origins cannot be ruled out. PAH features previously detected with Spitzer are now less clear in the MIRI data, arguing for possible destruction of dust in the interim. {We herein report on the calculation of thermoluminescence (TL) kinetic parameters determined from the TL emission of synthetic GdAlO3 (GAO) phosphors prepared by the co-precipitation method. The sample, characterized by means of X-ray diffraction with an orthorhombic phase structure (space group Pnma (62), shows complex glow curves consisting of at least four groups of components peaked at 100, 140, 240, and 290 {\deg}C where the two lower overlapped temperature peaks are difficult to identify using the $T_M-T_{stop}$. The coexistence of a continuum in the trap distribution (linked to the lower temperature peaks) and a discrete trap system (associated with the components at temperatures higher than 200 {\deg}C) can be distinguished. The estimation of the TL kinetic parameters is performed using GlowFit, TLAnal, the spreadsheet Origin, Computing Glow Curve Deconvolution (CGCD), and various heating rate (VHR) methods. However, only CGCD appears as the suitable technique for such purpose since it provides information on the TL physical process supported by mathematical models based on a linear combination of functions related to the First Order Kinetic approach., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures and 1 table

The evolution of accreting X-ray binary systems is closely coupled to the properties of their donor stars. As a result, we can constrain the evolutionary track a system is by establishing the nature of its donor. Here, we present far-UV spectroscopy of the transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1858 in three different accretion states (low-hard, high-hard and soft). All of these spectra exhibit anomalous N\,{\sc v}, C\,{\sc iv}, Si\,{\sc iv} and He\,{\sc ii} lines, suggesting that its donor star has undergone CNO processing. We also determine the donor's effective temperature, $T_{d} \simeq 5700$~K, and radius, $R_d \simeq 1.7~R_{\odot}$, based on photometric observations obtained during quiescence. Lastly, we leverage the transient nature of the system to set an upper limit of $\dot{M}_{\rm acc} \lesssim 10^{-8.5}~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ on the present-day mass-transfer rate. Combining all these with the orbital period of the system, $P_{\rm orb} = 21.3$~hrs, we search for viable evolution paths. The initial donor masses in the allowed solutions span the range $1~M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{d,i} \lesssim 3.5~M_{\odot}$. All but the lowest masses in this range are consistent with the strong CNO-processing signature in the UV line ratios. The present-day donor mass in the permitted tracks are $0.5~M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{d,obs} \lesssim 1.3~M_{\odot}$, higher than suggested by recent eclipse modelling. Since $P_{\rm orb}$ is close to the so-called bifurcation period, both converging and diverging binary tracks are permitted. If Swift J1858 is on a converging track, it will end its life as an ultra-compact system with a sub-stellar donor star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the first simultaneous high-time resolution X-ray and infrared (IR) observations of a neutron star low mass X-ray binary in its hard state. We performed $\approx 2\,$h of simultaneous observations of 4U 1728-34 using HAWK-I@VLT, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. The source displayed significant X-ray and IR variability down to sub-second timescales. By measuring the cross-correlation function between the infrared and X-ray lightcurves, we discovered a significant correlation with an infrared lead of $\approx 30-40\,$ms with respect to the X-rays. We analysed the X-ray energy dependence of the lag, finding a marginal increase towards higher energies. Given the sign of the lag, we interpret this as possible evidence of Comptonization from external seed photons. We discuss the origin of the IR seed photons in terms of cyclo-synchrotron radiation from an extended hot flow. Finally, we also observed the IR counterpart of a type-I X-ray burst, with a delay of $\approx7.2\,$s. Although some additional effects may be at play, by assuming that this lag is due to light travel time between the central object and the companion star, we find that 4U 1728-34 must have an orbital period longer than $3\,$h and an inclination higher than 8$^\circ$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages 7 figures

The accretion flow / jet correlation in neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is far less understood when compared to black hole (BH) LMXBs. In this paper we will present the results of a dense multi-wavelength observational campaign on the NS LMXB 4U 1820-30, including X-ray (Nicer, NuSTAR and AstroSAT) and quasi-simultaneous radio (ATCA) observations in 2022. 4U 1820-30 shows a peculiar 170 day super-orbital accretion modulation, during which the system evolves between "modes" of high and low X-ray flux. During our monitoring, the source did not show any transition to a full hard state. X-ray spectra were well described using a disc blackbody, a Comptonisation spectrum along with a Fe K emission line at 6.6 keV. Our results show that the observed X-ray flux modulation is almost entirely produced by changes in the size of the region providing seed photons for the Comptonisation spectrum. This region is large (about 15 km) in the high mode and likely coincides with the whole boundary layer, while it shrinks significantly (<10 km) in low mode. The electron temperature of the corona and the observed RMS variability in the hard X-rays also exhibit a slight increase in low mode. As the source moves from high to low mode, the radio emission due to the jet becomes about 5 fainter. These radio changes appear not to be strongly connected to the hard-to-soft transitions as in BH systems, while they seem to be connected mostly to variations observed in the boundary layer., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. Swift J1749.4-2807 is the only known eclipsing accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar. In this paper, we report on 7 thermonuclear (Type-I) X-ray bursts observed by NICER during its 2021 outburst. The first 6 bursts show slow rises and long decays, indicative of mixed H/He fuel, whereas the last burst shows fast rise and decay, suggesting He-rich fuel. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the bursts revealed typical phenomenology (i.e., an increase in black body temperature during the burst rise, and steady decrease in the decay), however they required a variable $N_\mathrm{H}$. We found that the values of $N_\mathrm{H}$ during the bursts were roughly double those found in the fits of the persistent emission prior to each burst. We interpret this change in absorption as evidence of burst-disc interaction, which we observe due to the high inclination of the system. We searched for burst oscillations during each burst and detected a signal in the first burst at the known spin frequency of the neutron star (517.92 Hz). This is the first time burst oscillations have been detected from Swift J1749.4-2807. We further find that each X-ray burst occurs on top of an elevated persistent count rate. We performed time-resolved spectroscopy on the combined data of the bursts with sufficient statistics (i.e., the clearest examples of this phenomenon) and found that the black body parameters evolve to hotter temperatures closer to the onset of the bursts. We report the discovery of millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) from the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1730--22 using the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). After being inactive for almost 50 years, 4U 1730--22 went into outburst twice between June and August 2021, and between February and July 2022. We analyse all the NICER observations of this source, and detect mHz QPOs with a significance > $4\sigma$ in 35 observations. The QPO frequency of the full data set ranged between ~4.5 and ~8.1 mHz with an average fractional rms amplitude of the order of ~2%. The X-ray colour analysis strongly suggests that 4U 1730--22 was in a soft spectral state during the QPO detections. Our findings are consistent with those reported for other sources where the mHz QPOs have been interpreted as the result of a special mode of He burning on the NS surface called marginally stable nuclear burning (MSNB). We conclude that the mHz QPOs reported in this work are also associated with the MSNB, making 4U 1730--22 the eighth source that shows this phenomenology. Tracking the motions of transient jets launched by low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is critical for determining the moment of jet ejection, and identifying any corresponding signatures in the accretion flow. However, these jets are often highly variable and can travel across the resolution element of an image within a single observation, violating a fundamental assumption of aperture synthesis. We present a novel approach in which we directly fit a single time-dependent model to the full set of interferometer visibilities, where we explicitly parameterise the motion and flux density variability of the emission components, to minimise the number of free parameters in the fit, while leveraging information from the full observation. This technique allows us to detect and characterize faint, fast-moving sources, for which the standard time binning technique is inadequate. We validate our technique with synthetic observations, before applying it to three Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the black hole candidate LMXB MAXI J1803-298 during its 2021 outburst. We measured the proper motion of a discrete jet component to be $1.37\pm0.14$ mas/hr, and thus we infer an ejection date of MJD $59348.08_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$, which occurs just after the peak of a radio flare observed by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA), while MAXI J1803-298 was in the intermediate state. Further development of these new VLBI analysis techniques will lead to more precise measurements of jet ejection dates, which, combined with dense, simultaneous multi-wavelength monitoring, will allow for clearer identification of jet ejection signatures in the accretion flow., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Fast transitions between different types of power density spectra (PDS) happening over timescales of several tens of seconds are rare phenomena in black hole X-ray binaries. In this paper, we report a broadband spectral-timing analysis of the fast transitions observed in the 2021 outburst of GX 339-4 using NICER and HXMT observations. We observe transitions between band-limited noise-dominated PDS and type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), and their rapid appearance or disappearance. We also make a detailed comparison between the fast transitions in GX 339-4 with those seen in MAXI J1820+070 and MAXI J1348--630. By comparing the spectra of the periods with and without type-B QPOs, we find that the spectral ratios above 10 keV are nearly constant or slightly decreasing, and the values are different between sources. Below 10 keV, the flux change of the Comptonization component is inversely proportional to the flux change of the thermal component, suggesting that the appearance of type-B QPOs is associated with a redistribution of the accretion power between the disc and the Comptonizing emission region. The spectral ratios between the periods with type-B QPO and those with broadband noise are significantly different from that with type-B QPO and without type-B QPO, where the ratios (type-B QPO/broadband noise) show a maximum at around 4 keV and then decrease gradually towards high energies. Finally, we discuss the possible change of the geometry of the inner accretion flow and/or jet during the transitions.

Accretion disks around compact objects are expected to enter an unstable phase at high luminosity. One instability may occur when the radiation pressure generated by accretion modifies the disk viscosity, resulting in the cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales. Such a scenario, however, has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole. Although there are hints of these cycles in a few isolated cases, their apparent absence in the variable emission of most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a lingering puzzle. Here we report the presence of the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star. Moreover, we show that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum-from radio to X-ray-of both black holes and neutron stars at high accretion rates can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable, producing relativistic ejections during transitions that deplete or refill the inner disk. Context: Massive colliding-wind binaries (CWBs) can be non-thermal sources. The emission produced in their wind-collision region (WCR) encodes information of both the shocks properties and the relativistic electrons accelerated in them. The recently discovered system Apep, a unique massive system hosting two Wolf-Rayet stars, is the most powerful synchrotron radio emitter among the known CWBs, being an exciting candidate to investigate the non-thermal processes associated with stellar wind shocks. Aims: We intend to break the degeneracy between the relativistic particle population and the magnetic field strength in the WCR of Apep by probing its hard X-ray spectrum, where inverse-Compton (IC) emission is expected to dominate. Methods: We observe Apep with NuSTAR for 60 ks and combine this with a re-analysis of a deep archival XMM-Newton observation to better constrain the X-ray spectrum. We use a non-thermal emission model to derive physical parameters from the results. Results: We detect hard X-ray emission consistent with a power-law component. This is compatible with IC emission produced in the WCR for a magnetic field of 100-160 mG and a fraction of ~1.5e-4 of the total wind kinetic power being converted into relativistic electron acceleration. Conclusions: This is the first time that the non-thermal emission from a CWB is detected both in radio and high energies. This allows us to derive the most robust constraints of the particle acceleration efficiency and magnetic field intensity in a CWB so far, reducing the typical uncertainty of a few orders of magnitude to just within a factor of two. When accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo bright X-ray outbursts, their luminosity-dependent spectral and timing features can be analysed in detail. The XRP GRO J1750-27 recently underwent one of such episodes, during which it was observed with $NuSTAR$ and monitored with $NICER$. Such a data set is rarely available, as it samples the outburst over more than a month at a luminosity that is always exceeding ${\sim}5\times10^{37}\,$erg/s. This value is larger than the typical critical luminosity value, where a radiative shock is formed above the neutron star's surface. Our data analysis of the joint spectra returns a highly ($N_H\sim(5-8)\times10^{22}\,$cm$^{-2}$) absorbed spectrum showing a K$\alpha$ iron line, a soft blackbody component likely originating from the inner edge of the accretion disk, and confirms the discovery of one of the deepest cyclotron lines, at a centroid energy of ${\sim}44\,$keV corresponding to a magnetic field strength of $4.7\times10^{12}\,$G. This value is independently supported by the best-fit physical model for spectral formation in accreting XRPs which, in agreement with recent findings, favours a distance of $14$ kpc and also reflects a bulk-Comptonization dominated accretion flow. Contrary to theoretical expectations and observational evidence from other similar sources, the pulse profiles as observed by $NICER$ through the outburst raise, peak and decay remain remarkably steady. The $NICER$ spectrum, including the iron K$\alpha$ line best-fit parameters, also remain almost unchanged at all probed outburst stages, similar to the pulsed fraction behaviour. We argue that all these phenomena are linked and interpret them as resulting from a saturation effect of the accretion column's emission, which occurs in the high-luminosity regime., Comment: Accepted on A&A -- proof version

The detection of coherent X-ray pulsations at ~314 Hz (3.2 ms) classifies MAXI J1957+032 as a fast-rotating, accreting neutron star. We present the temporal and spectral analysis performed using NICER observations collected during the latest outburst of the source. Doppler modulation of the X-ray pulsation revealed the ultra-compact nature of the binary system characterised by an orbital period of ~1 hour and a projected semi-major axis of 14 lt-ms. The neutron star binary mass function suggests a minimum donor mass of 1.7e-2 Msun, assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 Msun and a binary inclination angle lower than 60 degrees. This assumption is supported by the lack of eclipses or dips in the X-ray light curve of the source. We characterised the 0.5-10 keV energy spectrum of the source in outburst as the superposition of a relatively cold black-body-like thermal emission compatible with the emission from the neutron star surface and a Comptonisation component with photon index consistent with a typical hard state. The neutron star low-mass X-ray binary SWIFT J1749.4-2807 is the only known eclipsing accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar. In this manuscript we perform a spectral characterization of the system throughout its 2021, two-week-long outburst, analyzing 11 NICER observations and quasi-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR single observations at the outburst peak. The broadband spectrum is well-modeled with a black body component with a temperature of $\sim$0.6 keV, most likely consistent with a hot spot on the neutron star surface, and a Comptonisation spectrum with power-law index $\Gamma \sim 1.9$, arising from a hot corona at $\sim$12 keV. No direct emission from the disc was found, possibly due to it being too cool. A high truncation radius for the disc, i.e., at $\sim$20--30 R$_{G}$ , was obtained from the analysis of the broadened profile of the Fe line in the reflection component. The significant detection of a blue-shifted Fe XXVI absorption line at $\sim$7 keV indicates weakly relativistic X-ray disc winds, which are typically absent in the hard state of X-ray binaries. By comparing the low flux observed during the outburst and the one expected in a conservative mass-transfer, we conclude that mass-transfer in the system is highly non-conservative, as also suggested by the wind detection. Finally, using the Nicer spectra alone, we followed the system while it was fading to quiescence. During the outburst decay, as the spectral shape hardened, the hot spot on the neutron star surface cooled down and shrank, a trend which could be consistent with the pure power-law spectrum observed during quiescence., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure; accepted for publication on MNRAS

We present the pulsar timing analysis of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SWIFT J1749.4-2807 monitored by NICER and XMM-Newton during its latest outburst after almost eleven years of quiescence. From the coherent timing analysis of the pulse profiles, we updated the orbital ephemerides of the system. Large phase jumps of the fundamental frequency phase of the signal are visible during the outburst, consistent with what was observed during the previous outburst. Moreover, we report on the marginally significant evidence for non-zero eccentricity ($e\simeq 4\times 10^{-5}$) obtained independently from the analysis of both the 2021 and 2010 outbursts and we discuss possible compatible scenarios. Long-term orbital evolution of SWIFT J1749.4-2807 suggests a fast expansion of both the NS projected semi-major axis $(x)$, and the orbital period $(P_{\rm orb})$, at a rate of $\dot{x}\simeq 2.6\times 10^{-13}\,\text{lt-s}\,\text{s}^{-1}$ and $\dot{P}_{\rm orb}\simeq 4 \times 10^{-10}\,\text{s}\,\text{s}^{-1}$, respectively. SWIFT J1749.4-2807 is the only accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar, so far, from which the orbital period derivative has been directly measured from appreciable changes on the observed orbital period. Finally, no significant secular deceleration of the spin frequency of the compact object is detected, which allowed us to set a constraint on the magnetic field strength at the polar caps of $B_{PC}<1.3\times 10^{8}~\text{G}$, in line with typical values reported for AMXPs., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We present results from quasi-simultaneous multiwavelength observations of the Galactic black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820$+$070 during the decay of the 2018 outburst and its entire subsequent mini-outburst in March 2019. We fit the X-ray spectra with phenomenological and Comptonizaton models and discuss the X-ray spectral evolution comparing with the multiwavelength behaviour of the system. The system showed a rebrightening in UV/Optical/NIR bands 7-days after the soft-to-hard transition during the main outburst decay while it was fading in X-rays and radio. In contrast, the mini-outburst occurred 165-days after the hard state transition of the initial outburst decay and was detected in all wavelengths. For both events, the measured timescales are consistent with those observed in other black hole systems. Contemporaneous hard X-ray/soft $\gamma$-ray observations indicate a non-thermal electron energy distribution at the beginning of the UV/Optical/NIR rebrightening, whereas a thermal distribution can fit the data during the hard mini-outburst activity. The broadband spectral energy distributions until the rebrightening are consistent with the irradiated outer accretion disc model. However, both the SEDs produced for the peak of rebrightening and close to the peak of mini-outburst provided good fits only with an additional power-law component in the UV/Optical/NIR frequency ranges which is often interpreted with a jet origin., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables. All disc-accreting astrophysical objects produce powerful outflows. In binaries containing neutron stars (NS) or black holes, accretion often takes place during violent outbursts. The main disc wind signatures during these eruptions are blue-shifted X-ray absorption lines, which are preferentially seen in disc-dominated "soft states". By contrast,optical wind-formed lines have recently been detected in "hard states", when a hot corona dominates the luminosity. The relationship between these signatures is unknown, and no erupting system has revealed wind-formed lines between the X-ray and optical bands yet, despite the many strong resonance transitions in this ultraviolet (UV) region. Here, we show that the transient NS binary Swift J1858.6-0814 exhibits wind-formed, blue-shifted absorption associated with C IV, N V and He II in time-resolved UV spectroscopy during a luminous hard state. This represents the first evidence for a warm, moderately ionized outflow component in this state. Simultaneously observed optical lines also display transient blue-shifted absorption. Decomposing the UV data into constant and variable components, the blue-shifted absorption is associated with the former. This implies that the outflow is not connect to the luminous flares in the data. The joint presence of UV and optical wind features reveals a multi-phase and/or stratified outflow from the outer disc. This type of persistent mass loss across all accretion states has been predicted by radiation-hydrodynamic simulations and helps to explain the shorter-than-expected outbursts duration., Comment: Published in Nature. The radiative counterpart of the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Centre, Sagittarius A*, displays flaring emission in the X-ray band atop a steady, quiescent level. Flares are also observed in the near-infrared band. The physical process producing the flares is not fully understood and it is unclear if the flaring rate varies, although some recent works suggest it has reached unprecedented variability in recent years. Using over a decade of regular X-ray monitoring of Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, we studied the variations in count rate of Sgr A* on time scales of years. We decomposed the X-ray emission into quiescent and flaring emission, modelled as a constant and power law process, respectively. We found that the complete, multi-year dataset cannot be described by a stationary distribution of flare fluxes, while individual years follow this model better. In three of the ten studied years, the data is consistent with a purely Poissonian quiescent distribution, while for five years only an upper limit of the flare flux distribution parameter could be determined. We find that these possible changes cannot be explained fully by the different number of observations per year. Combined, these results are instead consistent with a changing flaring rate of Sgr A*, appearing more active between 2006-2007 and 2017-2019, than between 2008-2012. Finally, we discuss this result in the context of flare models and the passing of gaseous objects, and discuss the extra statistical steps taken, for instance to deal with the background in the Swift observations., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a catalogue of 362 million stellar parameters, distances, and extinctions derived from Gaia's early third data release (EDR3) cross-matched with the photometric catalogues of Pan-STARRS1, SkyMapper, 2MASS, and AllWISE. The higher precision of the Gaia EDR3 data, combined with the broad wavelength coverage of the additional photometric surveys and the new stellar-density priors of the {\tt StarHorse} code allow us to substantially improve the accuracy and precision over previous photo-astrometric stellar-parameter estimates. At magnitude $G=14\, (17)$, our typical precisions amount to 3% (15%) in distance, 0.13 mag (0.15 mag) in $V$-band extinction, and 140 K (180 K) in effective temperature. Our results are validated by comparisons with open clusters, as well as with asteroseismic and spectroscopic measurements, indicating systematic errors smaller than the nominal uncertainties for the vast majority of objects. We also provide distance- and extinction-corrected colour-magnitude diagrams, extinction maps, and extensive stellar density maps that reveal detailed substructures in the Milky Way and beyond. The new density maps now probe a much greater volume, extending to regions beyond the Galactic bar and to Local Group galaxies, with a larger total number density. We publish our results through an ADQL query interface ({\tt gaia.aip.de}) as well as via tables containing approximations of the full posterior distributions. Results are presented of searches for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars with accurately measured spin frequencies and orbital parameters, using data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The search algorithm uses a hidden Markov model, where the transition probabilities allow the frequency to wander according to an unbiased random walk, while the $\mathcal{J}$-statistic maximum-likelihood matched filter tracks the binary orbital phase. Three narrow sub-bands are searched for each target, centered on harmonics of the measured spin frequency. The search yields 16 candidates, consistent with a false alarm probability of 30% per sub-band and target searched. These candidates, along with one candidate from an additional target-of-opportunity search done for SAX J1808.4$-$3658, which was in outburst during one month of the observing run, cannot be confidently associated with a known noise source. Additional follow-up does not provide convincing evidence that any are a true astrophysical signal. When all candidates are assumed non-astrophysical, upper limits are set on the maximum wave strain detectable at 95% confidence, $h_0^{95\%}$. The strictest constraint is $h_0^{95\%} = 4.7\times 10^{-26}$ from IGR J17062$-$6143. Constraints on the detectable wave strain from each target lead to constraints on neutron star ellipticity and $r$-mode amplitude, the strictest of which are $\epsilon^{95\%} = 3.1\times 10^{-7}$ and $\alpha^{95\%} = 1.8\times 10^{-5}$ respectively. We studied the harmonics of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We detected the harmonics of the mHz QPOs in 73 data intervals, with most of them in the transitional spectra state. We found that the ratio between the rms amplitude of the harmonic and that of the fundamental remains constant in a wide range of the fundamental frequency. More importantly, we studied, for the first time, the rms amplitude of the harmonics vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 in the 2-5 keV range. We found that the rms amplitude of both the harmonic and the fundamental shows a decreasing trend as the energy increases, which is different from the behaviors reported in QPOs in certain black hole systems. Furthermore, our results suggest that not all observations with mHz QPOs have the harmonic component, although the reason behind this is still unclear., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present a broadband radio study of the transient jets ejected from the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571, which underwent a prolonged outburst beginning on 2 September 2017. We monitored MAXI J1535-571 with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at frequencies from 119 to 186 MHz over six epochs from 20 September to 14 October 2017. The source was quasi-simultaneously observed over the frequency range 0.84-19 GHz by UTMOST (the upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA). Using the LBA observations from 23 September 2017, we measured the source size to be $34\pm1$ mas. During the brightest radio flare on 21 September 2017, the source was detected down to 119 MHz by the MWA, and the radio spectrum indicates a turnover between 250 and 500 MHz, which is most likely due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA). By fitting the radio spectrum with a SSA model and using the LBA size measurement, we determined various physical parameters of the jet knot (identified in ATCA data), including the jet opening angle (= $4.5\pm1.2^{\circ}$) and the magnetic field strength (= $104^{+80}_{-78}$ mG). Our fitted magnetic field strength agrees reasonably well with that inferred from the standard equipartition approach, suggesting the jet knot to be close to equipartition. Our study highlights the capabilities of the Australian suite of radio telescopes to jointly probe radio jets in black hole X-ray binaries (BH-XRBs) via simultaneous observations over a broad frequency range, and with differing angular resolutions. This suite allows us to determine the physical properties of XRB jets. The persistently bright ultra-compact neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820$-$30 displays a $\sim$170 d accretion cycle, evolving between phases of high and low X-ray modes, where the 3 -- 10 keV X-ray flux changes by a factor of up to $\approx 8$. The source is generally in a soft X-ray spectral state, but may transition to a harder state in the low X-ray mode. Here, we present new and archival radio observations of 4U 1820$-$30 during its high and low X-ray modes. For radio observations taken within a low mode, we observed a flat radio spectrum consistent with 4U 1820$-$30 launching a compact radio jet. However, during the high X-ray modes the compact jet was quenched and the radio spectrum was steep, consistent with optically-thin synchrotron emission. The jet emission appeared to transition at an X-ray luminosity of $L_{\rm X (3-10 keV)} \sim 3.5 \times 10^{37} (D/\rm{7.6 kpc})^{2}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We also find that the low-state radio spectrum appeared consistent regardless of X-ray hardness, implying a connection between jet quenching and mass accretion rate in 4U 1820$-$30, possibly related to the properties of the inner accretion disk or boundary layer., Comment: 6 pages, 2 Figures. Black hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BH LMXBs) evolve in a similar way during outburst. Based on the X-ray spectrum and variability, this evolution can be divided into three canonical states: low/hard, intermediate and high/soft state. BH LMXBs evolve from the low/hard to the high/soft state through the intermediate state in some outbursts (here called "full outbursts"). However, in other cases, BH LMXBs undergo outbursts in which the source never reaches the high/soft state, here called "Failed-Transition outburst" (FT outbursts). From a sample of 56 BH LMXBs undergoing 128 outbursts, we find that $\sim$36% of these BH LMXBs experienced at least one FT outburst, and that FT outbursts represent $\sim$33% of the outbursts of the sample, showing that these are common events. We compare all the available X-ray data of full and FT outbursts of BH LMXBs from RXTE/PCA, Swift/BAT and MAXI and find that FT and full outbursts cannot be distinguished from their X-ray light curves, HIDs or X-ray variability during the initial 10-60 days after the outburst onset. This suggests that both types of outbursts are driven by the same physical process. We also compare the optical and infrared (O/IR) data of FT and full outbursts of GX 339-4. We found that this system is generally brighter in O/IR bands before an FT outburst, suggesting that the O/IR flux points to the physical process that later leads to a full or an FT outburst. We present a systematic spectral-timing analysis of a fast appearance/disappearance of a type-B quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO), observed in four NICER observations of MAXI J1348-630. By comparing the spectra of the period with and without the type-B QPO, we found that the main difference appears at energy bands above ~2 keV, suggesting that the QPO emission is dominated by the hard Comptonised component. During the transition, a change in the relative contribution of the disk and Comptonised emission was observed. The disk flux decreased while the Comptonised flux increased from non-QPO to type-B QPO. However, the total flux did not change too much in the NICER band. Our results reveal that the type-B QPO is associated with a redistribution of accretion power between the disk and Comptonised emission. When the type-B QPO appears, more accretion power is dissipated into the Comptonised region than in the disk. Our spectral fits give a hint that the increased Comptonised emission may come from an additional component that is related to the base of the jet., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of eclipses in the X-ray light curves of the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6-0814. From these, we find an orbital period of $P=76841.3_{-1.4}^{+1.3}$ s ($\approx21.3$ hours) and an eclipse duration of $t_{\rm ec}=4098_{-18}^{+17}$ s ($\approx1.14$ hours). We also find several absorption dips during the pre-eclipse phase. From the eclipse duration to orbital period ratio, the inclination of the binary orbit is constrained to $i>70^\circ$. The most likely range for the companion mass suggests that the inclination is likely to be closer to this value than $90^\circ$. The eclipses are also consistent with earlier data, in which strong variability ('flares') and the long orbital period prevent clear detection of the period or eclipses. We also find that the bright flares occurred preferentially in the post-eclipse phase of the orbit, likely due to increased thickness at the disc-accretion stream interface preventing flares being visible during the pre-eclipse phase. This supports the notion that variable obscuration is responsible for the unusually strong variability in Swift J1858.6-0814., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted

1ES 1927+654 is a nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) which underwent a changing-look event in early 2018, developing prominent broad Balmer lines which were absent in previous observations. We have followed up this object in the X-rays with an ongoing campaign that started in May 2018, and that includes 265 NICER (for a total of 678ks) and 14 Swift/XRT (26ks) observations, as well as three simultaneous XMM-Newton/NuSTAR (158/169 ks) exposures. In the X-rays, 1ES 1927+654 shows a behaviour unlike any previously known AGN. The source is extremely variable both in spectral shape and flux, and does not show any correlation between X-ray and UV flux on timescales of hours or weeks/months. After the outburst the power-law component almost completely disappeared, and the source showed an extremely soft continuum dominated by a blackbody component. The temperature of the blackbody increases with the luminosity, going from $kT\sim 80$eV (for a 0.3--2keV luminosity of $L_{0.3-2}\sim 10^{41.5}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$) to $\sim 200$eV (for $L_{0.3-2}\sim 10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$). The spectra show evidence of ionized outflows, and of a prominent feature at $\sim 1$keV, which can be reproduced by a broad emission line. The unique characteristics of 1ES 1927+654 in the X-ray band suggest that it belongs to a new type of changing-look AGN. We detect millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) using the Rossi X-ray Time Explorer (RXTE) from the atoll neutron-star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1608--52 and Aql X--1. From the analysis of all RXTE observations of 4U 1608--52 and Aql X--1, we find mHz QPOs with a significance level $>3\sigma$ in 49 and 47 observations, respectively. The QPO frequency is constrained between $\sim$ 4.2 and 13.4 mHz. These types of mHz QPOs have been interpreted as being the result of marginally stable nuclear burning of He on the NS surface. We also report the discovery of a downward frequency drift in three observations of 4U 1608--52, making it the third source that shows this behaviour. We only find strong evidence of frequency drift in one occasion in Aql X--1, probably because the observations were too short to measure a significant drift. Finally, the mHz QPOs are mainly detected when both sources are in the soft or intermediate states; the cases that show frequency drift only occur when the sources are in intermediate states. Our results are consistent with the phenomenology observed for the NS systems 4U 1636--53 and EXO 0748--676, suggesting that all four sources can reach the conditions for marginally stable burning of He on the NS surface. Low Mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are binary systems where one of the components is either a black hole or a neutron star and the other is a less massive star. It is challenging to unambiguously determine whether a LMXB hosts a black hole or a neutron star. In the last few decades, multiple observational works have tried, with different levels of success, to address this problem. In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning to tackle this observational challenge. We train a random forest classifier to identify the type of compact object using the energy spectrum in the energy range 5-25 keV obtained from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer archive. We report an average accuracy of 87+/-13 in classifying the spectra of LMXB sources. We further use the trained model for predicting the classes for LMXB systems with unknown or ambiguous classification. With the ever-increasing volume of astronomical data in the X-ray domain from present and upcoming missions (e.g., SWIFT, XMM-Newton, XARM, ATHENA, NICER), such methods can be extremely useful for faster and robust classification of X-ray sources and can also be deployed as part of the data reduction pipeline., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal

MAXI J1807+132 is a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) first detected in outburst in 2017. Observations during the 2017 outburst did not allow for an unambiguous identification of the nature of the compact object. MAXI J1807+132 was detected in outburst again in 2019 and was monitored regularly with NICER. In this paper we report on five days of observations during which we detected three thermonuclear (Type-I) X-ray bursts, identifying the system as a neutron star LMXB. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the three Type-I bursts revealed typical characteristics expected for these phenomena. All three Type-I bursts show slow rises and long decays, indicative of mixed H/He fuel. We find no strong evidence that any of the Type-I bursts reached the Eddington Luminosity; however, under the assumption that the brightest X-ray burst underwent photospheric radius expansion, we estimate a <12.4kpc upper limit for the distance. We searched for burst oscillations during the Type-I bursts from MAXI J1807+132 and found none (<10% amplitude upper limit at 95% confidence level). Finally, we found that the brightest Type-I burst shows a ~1.6sec pause during the rise. This pause is similar to one recently found with NICER in a bright Type-I burst from the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The fact that Type-I bursts from both sources can show this type of pause suggests that the origin of the pauses is independent of the composition of the burning fuel, the peak luminosity of the Type-I bursts, or whether the NS is an X-ray pulsar., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We studied the outburst evolution and timing properties of the recently discovered X-ray transient MAXI J1348-630 as observed with NICER. We produced the fundamental diagrams commonly used to trace the spectral evolution, and power density spectra to study the fast X-ray variability. The main outburst evolution of MAXI J1348-630 is similar to that commonly observed in black hole transients. The source evolved from the hard state, through hard- and soft-intermediate states, into the soft state in the outburst rise, and back to the hard state in reverse during the outburst decay. At the end of the outburst, MAXI J1348-630 underwent two reflares with peak fluxes ~1 and ~2 orders of magnitude fainter than the main outburst, respectively. During the reflares, the source remained in the hard state only, without undergoing any state transitions, which is similar to the so-called "failed outbursts". Different types of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed at different phases of the outburst. Swift J1858.6-0814 is a recently discovered X-ray binary notable for extremely strong variability (by factors $>100$ in soft X-rays) in its discovery state. We present the detection of five thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from Swift J1858.6-0814, implying that the compact object in the system is a neutron star. Some of the bursts show photospheric radius expansion, so their peak flux can be used to estimate the distance to the system. The peak luminosity, and hence distance, can depend on several system parameters; for the most likely values, a high inclination and a helium atmosphere, $D=12.8_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ kpc, although systematic effects allow a conservative range of $9-18$ kpc. Before one burst, we detect a QPO at $9.6\pm0.5$ mHz with a fractional rms amplitude of $2.2\pm0.2$% ($0.5-10$ keV), likely due to marginally stable burning of helium; similar oscillations may be present before the other bursts but the light curves are not long enough to allow their detection. We also search for burst oscillations but do not detect any, with an upper limit in the best case of 15% fractional amplitude (over $1-8$ keV). Finally, we discuss the implications of the neutron star accretor and this distance on other inferences which have been made about the system. We present results from six epochs of quasi-simultaneous radio, (sub-)millimetre, infrared, optical, and X-ray observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI~J1535$-$571. These observations show that as the source transitioned through the hard-intermediate X-ray state towards the soft intermediate X-ray state, the jet underwent dramatic and rapid changes. We observed the frequency of the jet spectral break, which corresponds to the most compact region in the jet where particle acceleration begins (higher frequencies indicate closer to the black hole), evolve from the IR band into the radio band (decreasing by $\approx$3 orders of magnitude) in less than a day. During one observational epoch, we found evidence of the jet spectral break evolving in frequency through the radio band. Estimating the magnetic field and size of the particle acceleration region shows that the rapid fading of the high-energy jet emission was not consistent with radiative cooling; instead the particle acceleration region seems to be moving away from the black hole on approximately dynamical timescales. This result suggests that the compact jet quenching is not caused by local changes to the particle acceleration, rather we are observing the acceleration region of the jet travelling away from the black hole with the jet flow. Spectral analysis of the X-ray emission show a gradual softening in the few days before the dramatic jet changes, followed by a more rapid softening $\sim$1--2\,days after the onset of the jet quenching., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, data provided in the appendices. V341 Ara was recently recognised as one of the closest (d ~ 150 pc) and brightest (V~ 10) nova-like cataclysmic variables. This unique system is surrounded by a bright emission nebula, likely to be the remnant of a recent nova eruption. Embedded within this nebula is a prominent bow-shock, where the system's accretion disc wind runs into its own nova shell. In order to establish its fundamental properties, we present the first comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the system. Long-term photometry reveals quasi-periodic, super-orbital variations with a characteristic time-scale of 10-16 days and typical amplitude of ~1 mag. High-cadence photometry from TESS reveals for the first time both the orbital period and a "negative superhump" period. The latter is usually interpreted as the signature of a tilted accretion disc. We propose a recently developed disc instability model as a plausible explanation for the photometric behaviour. In our spectroscopic data, we clearly detect anti-phased absorption and emission line components. Their radial velocities suggest a high mass ratio, which in turn implies an unusually low white dwarf mass. We also constrain the wind mass-loss rate of the system from the spatially resolved [O iii] emission produced in the bow-shock; this can be used to test and calibrate accretion disc wind models. We suggest a possible association between V341 Ara and a "guest star" mentioned in Chinese historical records in AD1240. If this marks the date of the system's nova eruption, V341 Ara would be the oldest recovered nova of its class and an excellent laboratory for testing nova theory., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

We find soft X-ray emission lines from the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6-0814 in data from XMM-Newton-RGS: N VII, O VII and O VIII, as well as notable residuals short of a detection at Ne IX and other higher ionisation transitions. These could be associated with the disc atmosphere, as in accretion disc corona sources, or with a wind, as has been detected in Swift J1858.6-0814 in emission lines at optical wavelengths. Indeed, the N VII line is redshifted, consistent with being the emitting component of a P-Cygni profile. We find that the emitting plasma has an ionisation parameter $\log(\xi)=1.35\pm0.2$ and a density $n>1.5\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. From this, we infer that the emitting plasma must be within $10^{13}$ cm of the ionising source, $\sim5\times10^{7}r_{\rm g}$ for a $1.4M_{\odot}$ neutron star, and from the line width that it is at least $10^4r_{\rm g}$ away ($2\times10^{9}(M/1.4M_{\odot})$ cm). We present a detailed X-ray spectral and variability study of the full 2018 outburst of MAXI J1727-203 using NICER observations. The outburst lasted approximately four months. Spectral modelling in the 0.3-10 keV band shows the presence of both a soft thermal and a hard Comptonised component. The analysis of these components shows that MAXI J1727-203 evolved through the soft, intermediate and hard spectral states during the outburst. We find that the soft (disc) component was detected throughout almost the entire outburst, with temperatures ranging from ~0.4 keV, at the moment of maximum luminosity, to ~0.1 keV near the end of the outburst. The power spectrum in the hard and intermediate states shows broadband noise up to 20 Hz, with no evidence of quasi-periodic oscillations. We also study the rms spectra of the broadband noise at 0.3-10 keV of this source. We find that the fractional rms increases with energy in most of the outburst except during the hard state, where the fractional rms remains approximately constant with energy. We also find that, below 3 keV, the fractional rms follows the same trend generally observed at energies >3 keV, a behaviour known from previous studies of black holes and neutron stars. The spectral and timing evolution of MAXI J1727-203, as parametrised by the hardness-intensity, hardness-rms, and rms-intensity diagrams, suggest that the system hosts a black hole, although we could not rule out a neutron star., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal

We present the drastic transformation of the X-ray properties of the active galactic nucleus 1ES 1927+654, following a changing-look event. After the optical/UV outburst the power-law component, produced in the X-ray corona, disappeared, and the spectrum of 1ES 1927+65 instead became dominated by a blackbody component ($kT\sim 80-120$ eV). This implies that the X-ray corona, ubiquitously found in AGN, was destroyed in the event. Our dense $\sim 450$ day long X-ray monitoring shows that the source is extremely variable in the X-ray band. On long time scales the source varies up to $\sim 4$ dex in $\sim 100$ days, while on short timescales up to $\sim2$ dex in $\sim 8$ hours. The luminosity of the source is found to first show a strong dip down to $\sim 10^{40}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, and then a constant increase in luminosity to levels exceeding the pre-outburst level $\gtrsim $300 days after the optical event detection, rising up asymptotically to $\sim 2\times10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$. As the X-ray luminosity of the source increases, the X-ray corona is recreated, and a very steep power-law component ($\Gamma\simeq 3$) reappears, and dominates the emission for 0.3-2 keV luminosities $\gtrsim 10^{43.7}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, $\sim 300$ days after the beginning of the event. We discuss possible origins of this event, and speculate that our observations could be explained by the interaction between the accretion flow and debris from a tidally disrupted star. Our results show that changing-look events can be associated with dramatic and rapid transformations of the innermost regions of accreting SMBHs., Comment: ApJL in press

We used two XMM-Newton and six Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations to investigate the fractional rms amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53. We studied, for the first time, the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 down to 0.2 keV. We find that, as the energy increases from 0.2 keV to 3 keV, the rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs increases, different from the decreasing trend that has been previously observed above 3 keV. This finding has not yet been predicted by any current theoretical model, however, it provides an important observational feature to speculate whether a newly discovered mHz oscillation originates from the marginally stable nuclear burning process on the neutron star surface., Comment: Published in ApJ, 10 pages, 5 figures

Swift J1858.6-0814 is a transient neutron star X-ray binary discovered in October 2018. Multi-wavelength follow-up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum revealed many interesting properties, such as erratic flaring on minute timescales and evidence for wind outflows at both X-ray and optical wavelengths, strong and variable local absorption, and an anomalously hard X-ray spectrum. Here, we report on a detailed radio observing campaign consisting of one observation at 5.5/9 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and nine observations at 4.5/7.5 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. A radio counterpart with a flat to inverted radio spectrum is detected in all observations, consistent with a compact jet being launched from the system. Swift J1858.6-0814 is highly variable at radio wavelengths in most observations, showing significant variability when imaged on 3-to-5-minute timescales and changing up to factors of 8 within 20 minutes. The periods of brightest radio emission are not associated with steep radio spectra, implying they do not originate from the launching of discrete ejecta. We find that the radio variability is similarly unlikely to have a geometric origin, be due to scintillation, or be causally related to the observed X-ray flaring. Instead, we find that it is consistent with being driven by variations in the accretion flow propagating down the compact jet. The black hole candidate and X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 was discovered in September 2017. During the decay of its discovery outburst, and before returning to quiescence, the source underwent at least four reflaring events, with peak luminosities of $\sim$10$^{35-36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (d/4.1 kpc)$^2$. To investigate the nature of these flares, we analysed a sample of NICER observations taken with almost daily cadence. In this work we present the detailed spectral and timing analysis of the evolution of the four reflares. The higher sensitivity of NICER at lower energies, in comparison with other X-ray detectors, allowed us to constrain the disc component of the spectrum at $\sim$0.5 keV. We found that during each reflare the source appears to trace out a q-shaped track in the hardness-intensity diagram similar to those observed in black hole binaries during full outbursts. MAXI J1535-571 transits between the hard state (valleys) and softer states (peaks) during these flares. Moreover, the Comptonised component is undetected at the peak of the first reflare, while the disc component is undetected during the valleys. Assuming the most likely distance of 4.1 kpc, we find that the hard-to-soft transitions take place at the lowest luminosities ever observed in a black hole transient, while the soft-to-hard transitions occur at some of the lowest luminosities ever reported for such systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal

We conducted an observational campaign towards one of the most massive and luminous colliding wind binaries in the Galaxy, HD~93129A, close to its periastron passage in 2018. During this time the source was predicted to be in its maximum of high-energy emission. Here we present our data analysis from the X-ray satellites \textit{Chandra} and \textit{NuSTAR} and the $\gamma$-ray satellite \textit{AGILE}. High-energy emission coincident with HD~93129A was detected in the X-ray band up to $\sim$18~keV, whereas in the $\gamma$-ray band only upper limits were obtained. We interpret the derived fluxes using a non-thermal radiative model for the wind-collision region. We establish a conservative upper limit for the fraction of the wind kinetic power that is converted into relativistic electron acceleration, $f_\mathrm{NT,e} < 0.02$. In addition, we set a lower limit for the magnetic field in the wind-collision region as $B_\mathrm{WCR} > 0.3$~G. We also argue a putative interpretation of the emission from which we estimate $f_\mathrm{NT,e} \approx 0.006$ and $B_\mathrm{WCR} \approx 0.5$~G. We conclude that multi-wavelength, dedicated observing campaigns during carefully selected epochs are a powerful tool for characterising the relativistic particle content and magnetic field intensity in colliding wind binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In November 2019, MAXI detected an X-ray outburst from the known Be X-ray binary system RX J0209.6-7427 located in the outer wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We followed the outburst of the system with NICER which led to the discovery of X-ray pulsations with a period of 9.3 s. We analyzed simultaneous X-ray data obtained with NuSTAR and NICER allowing us to characterize the spectrum and provide an accurate estimate of its bolometric luminosity. During the outburst the maximum broadband X-ray luminosity of the system reached $1-2\times10^{39}$ erg/s, thus exceeding by about one order of magnitude the Eddington limit for a typical 1.4 $M_{\odot}$ mass neutron star (NS). Monitoring observations with Fermi/GBM and NICER allowed us to study the spin evolution of the NS and compare it with standard accretion torque models. We found that the NS magnetic field should be of the order of $3\times10^{12}$ G. We conclude that RX J0209.6-7427 exhibited one of the brightest outbursts observed from a Be X-ray binary pulsar in the Magellanic Clouds, reaching similar luminosity level to the 2016 outburst of SMC X-3. We present the discovery of an optical accretion disk wind in the X-ray transient Swift J1858.6-0814. Our 90-spectrum data set, taken with the 10.4m GTC telescope over 8 different epochs and across five months, reveals the presence of conspicuous P-Cyg profiles in He I at 5876 Angs and Halpha. These features are detected throughout the entire campaign, albeit their intensity and main observational properties are observed to vary on time-scales as short as five minutes. In particular, we observe significant variations in the wind velocity, between a few hundreds and ~ 2400 km/s. In agreement with previous reports, our observations are characterised by the presence of frequent flares, although the relation between the continuum flux variability and the presence/absence of wind features is not evident. The reported high activity of the system at radio waves indicates that the optical wind of Swift J1858.6-0814 is contemporaneous with the radio-jet, as is the case for the handful of X-ray binary transients that have shown so far optical P-Cyg profiles. Finally, we compare our results with those of other sources showing optical accretion disk winds, with emphasis on V404 Cyg and V4641 Sgr, since they also display strong and variable optical wind features as well as similar flaring behaviour., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We report the detection of an infrared burst lagging a thermonuclear Type I X-ray burst from the accreting neutron star 4U 1728-34 (GX 354-0). Observations were performed simultaneously with XMM-Newton (0.7-12 keV), NuSTAR (3-79 keV) and HAWK-I@VLT (2.2$\mu$m). We measure a lag of $4.75 \pm 0.5$ s between the peaks of the emission in the two bands. Due to the length of the lag and the shape of the IR burst, we found that the most plausible cause for such a large delay is reprocessing of the Type I burst X-rays by the companion star. The inferred distance between the neutron star and the companion can be used to constrain the orbital period of the system, which we find to be larger than $\sim$ 66 minutes (or even $\gtrsim$ 2 hours, for a realistic inclination $< 75^\circ$). This is much larger than the current tentatively estimated period of $\sim 11$ minutes. The Galactic black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 had a bright outburst in 2018 when it became the second brightest X-ray source in the Sky. It was too bright for X-ray CCD instruments such as XMM-Newton and Chandra, but was well observed by photon-counting instruments such as NICER and NuSTAR. We report here on the discovery of an excess emission component during the soft state. It is best modelled with a blackbody spectrum in addition to the regular disk emission, modelled either as diskbb or kerrbb. Its temperature varies from about 0.9 to 1.1 keV which is about 30 to 80 per cent higher than the inner disc temperature of diskbb. Its flux varies between 4 and 12 percent of the disc flux. Simulations of magnetised accretion discs have predicted the possibility of excess emission associated with a non-zero torque at the Innermost Stable Circular Orbit (ISCO) about the black hole, which from other NuSTAR studies lies at about 5 gravitational radii or about 60 km (for a black hole mass is 8 M). In this case the emitting region at the ISCO has a width varying between 1.3 and 4.6 km and would encompass the start of the plunge region where matter begins to fall freely into the black hole., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using the Very Long Baseline Array and the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network we have made a precise measurement of the radio parallax of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI\,J1820+070, providing a model-independent distance to the source. Our parallax measurement of ($0.348\pm0.033$) mas for MAXI J1820+070 translates to a distance of ($2.96\pm0.33$) kpc. This distance implies that the source reached ($15\pm3)\%$ of the Eddington luminosity at the peak of its outburst. Further, we use this distance to refine previous estimates of the jet inclination angle, jet velocity and the mass of the black hole in MAXI J1820+070 to be ($63\pm3)^{\circ}$, ($0.89\pm0.09)c$ and ($9.2\pm1.3) M_{\odot}$, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Published in MNRAS

We investigate the frequency and amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) 4U 1636-53 using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We find that no mHz QPOs appear when the source is in the hard spectral state. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the frequency and the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs. Notwithstanding, for the first time, we find that the absolute RMS amplitude of the mHz QPOs is insensitive to the parameter Sa, which measures the position of the source in the colour-colour diagram and is usually assumed to be an increasing function of mass accretion rate. This finding indicates that the transition from marginally stable burning to stable burning or unstable burning could happen very rapidly since, before the transition, the mHz QPOs do not gradually decay as the rate further changes., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 9 pages, 8 figures

We report the development of a high-time resolution, 3-colour, simultaneous optical imaging system for the 2.1 m telescope in San Pedro M\'artir Observatory, M\'exico. OPTICAM will be equipped with three Andor Zyla 4.2-Plus sCMOS cameras and a set of SDSS filters allowing optical coverage in the 320-1,100 nm range. OPTICAM will nominally allow sub-second exposures. Given its instrumental design, a wide range of fast-variability astrophysical sources can be targeted with OPTICAM including X-ray binaries, pulsating white dwarfs, accreting compact objects, eclipsing binaries and exoplanets. We report on X-ray and radio observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 1543-624 taken in August 2017 during an enhanced accretion episode. We obtained NICER monitoring of the source over a $\sim10$ day period during which target-of-opportunity observations were also conducted with Swift, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. Emission lines were measured in the NICER X-ray spectrum at $\sim0.64$ keV and $\sim6.4$ keV that correspond to O and Fe, respectively. By modeling these line components, we are able to track changes in the accretion disk throughout this period. The innermost accretion flow appears to move inwards from hundreds of gravitational radii ($R_{g}=GM/c^{2}$) at the beginning of the outburst to $<8.7$ $R_{g}$ at peak intensity. We do not detect the source in radio, but are able to place a $3\sigma$ upper limit on the flux density at $27$ $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. Comparing the radio and X-ray luminosities, we find that the source lies significantly away from the range typical of black holes in the ${L}_{{r}}$-${L}_{{x}}$ plane, suggesting a neutron star (NS) primary. This adds to the evidence that NSs do not follow a single track in the ${L}_{{r}}$-${L}_{{x}}$ plane, limiting its use in distinguishing between different classes of NSs based on radio and X-ray observations alone., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The structure and composition of the crust of neutron stars plays an important role in their thermal and magnetic evolution, hence in setting their observational properties. One way to study the crust properties is to measure how it cools after it has been heated during an accretion outburst in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Such studies have shown that there is a tantalizing source of heat, of currently unknown origin, that is located in the outer layers of the crust and has a strength that varies between different sources and different outbursts. With the aim of understanding the mechanism behind this "shallow heating", we present Chandra and Swift observations of the neutron star LMXB Aql X-1, obtained after its bright 2016 outburst. We find that the neutron star temperature was initially much lower, and started to decrease at much later time, than observed after the 2013 outburst of the source, despite the fact that the properties of the two outbursts were very similar. Comparing our data to thermal evolution simulations, we infer that the depth and magnitude of shallow heating must have been much larger during the 2016 outburst than during the 2013 one. This implies that basic neutron star parameters that do not change between outbursts, do not play a strong role in shallow heating. Furthermore, it suggests that outbursts with a similar accretion morphology can give rise to very different shallow heating.
