BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted human societies around the world. This public health emergency was followed by a significant loss of human life; the ensuing social restrictions led to loss of employment, lack of interactions, and burgeoning psychological distress. As physical distancing regulations were introduced to manage outbreaks, individuals, groups, and communities engaged extensively on social media to express their thoughts and emotions. This internet-mediated communication of self-reported information encapsulates the emotional health and mental well-being of all individuals impacted by the pandemic. ObjectiveThis research aims to investigate the human emotions related to the COVID-19 pandemic expressed on social media over time, using an artificial intelligence (AI) framework. MethodsOur study explores emotion classifications, intensities, transitions, and profiles, as well as alignment to key themes and topics, across the four stages of the pandemic: declaration of a global health crisis (ie, prepandemic), the first lockdown, easing of restrictions, and the second lockdown. This study employs an AI framework comprised of natural language processing, word embeddings, Markov models, and the growing self-organizing map algorithm, which are collectively used to investigate social media conversations. The investigation was carried out using 73,000 public Twitter conversations posted by users in Australia from January to September 2020. ResultsThe outcomes of this study enabled us to analyze and visualize different emotions and related concerns that were expressed and reflected on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic, which could be used to gain insights into citizens’ mental health. First, the topic analysis showed the diverse as well as common concerns people had expressed during the four stages of the pandemic. It was noted that personal-level concerns expressed on social media had escalated to broader concerns over time. Second, the emotion intensity and emotion state transitions showed that fear and sadness emotions were more prominently expressed at first; however, emotions transitioned into anger and disgust over time. BackgroundCancer and its treatment can significantly impact the short- and long-term psychological well-being of patients and families. Emotional distress and depressive symptomatology are often associated with poor treatment adherence, reduced quality of life, and higher mortality. Cancer support groups, especially those led by health care professionals, provide a safe place for participants to discuss fear, normalize stress reactions, share solidarity, and learn about effective strategies to build resilience and enhance coping. However, in-person support groups may not always be accessible to individuals; geographic distance is one of the barriers for access, and compromised physical condition (eg, fatigue, pain) is another. Emerging evidence supports the effectiveness of online support groups in reducing access barriers. Text-based and professional-led online support groups have been offered by Cancer Chat Canada. Participants join the group discussion using text in real time. However, therapist leaders report some challenges leading text-based online support groups in the absence of visual cues, particularly in tracking participant distress. With multiple participants typing at the same time, the nuances of the text messages or red flags for distress can sometimes be missed. Recent advances in artificial intelligence such as deep learning–based natural language processing offer potential solutions. This technology can be used to analyze online support group text data to track participants’ expressed emotional distress, including fear, sadness, and hopelessness. Artificial intelligence allows session activities to be monitored in real time and alerts the therapist to participant disengagement. ObjectiveWe aim to develop and evaluate an artificial intelligence–based cofacilitator prototype to track and monitor online support group participants’ distress through real-time analysis of text-based messages posted during synchronous sessions. MethodsAn artificial intelligence–based cofacilitator will be developed to identify participants who are at-risk for increased emotional distress and track participant engagement and in-session group cohesion levels, providing real-time alerts for therapist to follow-up; generate postsession participant profiles that contain discussion content keywords and emotion profiles for each session; and automatically suggest tailored resources to participants according to their needs. The study is designed to be conducted in 4 phases consisting of (1) development based on a subset of data and an existing natural language processing framework, (2) performance evaluation using human scoring, (3) beta testing, and (4) user experience evaluation. ResultsThis study received ethics approval in August 2019. Phase 1, development of an artificial intelligence–based cofacilitator, was completed in January 2020. As of December 2020, phase 2 is underway. The study is expected to be completed by September 2021. ConclusionsAn artificial intelligence–based cofacilitator offers a promising new mode of delivery of person-centered online support groups tailored to individual needs. As outlined by the International Energy Agency, 44% of carbon emissions in 2021 were attributed to electricity and heat generation. Under this critical scenario, the power industry has adopted technologies promoting sustainability in the form of smart grids, microgrids, and renewable energy. To overcome the technical challenges associated with these emerging approaches and to preserve the stability and reliability of the power system, integrating advanced digital technologies such as Digital Twins (DTs) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial. While existing research has explored DTs and AI in power systems separately, an overarching review of their combined, synergetic application in sustainable power systems is lacking. Hence, in this work, a comprehensive scoping review is conducted under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The main results of this review analysed the breadth and relationships among power systems, DTs, and AI dynamics and presented an evolutionary timeline with three distinct periods of maturity. The prominent utilisation of deep learning, supervised learning, reinforcement learning, and swarm intelligence techniques was identified as mainly constrained to power system operations and maintenance functions, along with the potential for more sophisticated AI techniques in computer vision, natural language processing, and smart robotics. This review also discovered sustainability-related objectives addressed by AI-powered DTs in power systems, encompassing renewable energy integration and energy efficiency, while encouraging the investigation of more direct efforts on sustainable power systems. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. With the advancements in sensor technologies and data availability, artificial intelligence (AI) holds the promise of improving the amount, quality and efficiency of care and enhancing the precision of stroke rehabilitation. We aimed to identify and characterize the existing research on AI applications in stroke recovery and rehabilitation of adults, including categories of application and progression of technologies over time. Data were collected from peer-reviewed articles across various electronic databases up to January 2024. Insights were extracted using AI-enhanced multi-method, data-driven techniques, including clustering of themes and topics. This scoping review summarizes outcomes from 704 studies. Four common themes (impairment, assisted intervention, prediction and imaging, and neuroscience) were identified, in which time-linked patterns emerged. The impairment theme revealed a focus on motor function, gait and mobility, while the assisted intervention theme included applications of robotic and brain–computer interface (BCI) techniques. AI applications progressed over time, starting from conceptualization and then expanding to a broader range of techniques in supervised learning, artificial neural networks (ANN), natural language processing (NLP) and more. Applications focused on upper limb rehabilitation were reviewed in more detail, with machine learning (ML), deep learning techniques and sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMU) used for upper limb and functional movement analysis. AI applications have potential to facilitate tailored therapeutic delivery, thereby contributing to the optimization of rehabilitation outcomes and promoting sustained recovery from rehabilitation to real-world settings. Machine learning is regarded as an effective approach in network intrusion detection, and has gained significant attention in recent studies. However, few intrusion detection methods have been successfully applied to detect anomalies in large-scale network traffic data, and low explainability of the complex algorithms has caused concerns about fairness and accountability. A further problem is that many intrusion detection systems need to work with distributed data sources in the cloud. In this paper, we propose an intrusion detection method based on distributed computing to learn the latent representations from large-scale network data with lower computation time while improving the intrusion detection accuracy. Our proposed classifier, based on a novel hierarchical algorithm combining adaptability and visualization ability from a self-structured unsupervised learning algorithm and achieving explainability from self-explainable supervised algorithms, is able to enhance the understanding of the model and data. The experimental results show that our proposed method is effective, efficient, and scalable in capturing the network traffic patterns and detecting detailed network intrusion information such as type of attack with high detection performance, and is an ideal method to be applied in cloud-computing environments. The National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is used worldwide to classify stroke severity as 'mild', 'moderate', or 'severe' based on neurological impairment. Yet, stroke survivors argue that the classification of 'mild' does not represent the holistic experience and impact of stroke on their daily lives. In this observational cohort study, we aimed to identify different types of impairment profiles among stroke survivors classified as 'mild'. We used survivors of mild stroke' data from the START longitudinal stroke cohort (n = 73), with measures related to sensorimotor, cognition, depression, functional disability, physical activity, work, and social adjustment over 12 months. Given the multisource, multigranular, and unlabeled nature of the data, we utilized a structure-adapting, unsupervised machine learning approach, the growing self-organizing map (GSOM) algorithm, to generate distinct clinical profiles. These diverse impairment profiles revealed that survivors of mild stroke experience varying degrees of impairment and impact (cognitive, depression, physical activity, work/social adjustment) at different time points, despite the uniformity implied by their NIHSS-classified 'mild' stroke. This emphasizes the necessity of creating a holistic and more comprehensive representation of survivors of mild stroke' needs over the first year after stroke to improve rehabilitation and poststroke care. In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, where human–computer interaction is an integral component of daily life, the ability to recognize and understand human emotions has emerged as a crucial facet of technological advancement. However, human emotion, a complex interplay of physiological, psychological, and social factors, poses a formidable challenge even for other humans to comprehend accurately. With the emergence of voice assistants and other speech-based applications, it has become essential to improve audio-based emotion expression. However, there is a lack of specificity and agreement in current emotion annotation practice, as evidenced by conflicting labels in many human-annotated emotional datasets for the same speech segments. Previous studies have had to filter out these conflicts and, therefore, a large portion of the collected data has been considered unusable. In this study, we aimed to improve the accuracy of computational prediction of uncertain emotion labels by utilizing high-confidence emotion labelled speech segments from the IEMOCAP emotion dataset. We implemented an audio-based emotion recognition model using bag of audio word encoding (BoAW) to obtain a representation of audio aspects of emotion in speech with state-of-the-art recurrent neural network models. Our approach improved the state-of-the-art audio-based emotion recognition with a 61.09% accuracy rate, an improvement of 1.02% over the BiDialogueRNN model and 1.72% over the EmoCaps multi-modal emotion recognition models. In comparison to human annotation, our approach achieved similar results in identifying positive and negative emotions. Furthermore, it has proven effective in accurately recognizing the sentiment of uncertain emotion segments that were previously considered unusable in other studies. Improvements in audio emotion recognition could have implications in voice-based assistants, healthcare, and other industrial applications that benefit from automated communication. The proliferation of online hotel review platforms has prompted decision-makers in the hospitality sector to acknowledge the significance of extracting valuable information from this vast source. While contemporary research has primarily focused on extracting sentiment and discussion topics from online reviews, the transformative potential of such insights remains largely untapped. In this paper, we propose an approach that leverages Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to convert unstructured textual reviews into a quantifiable and structured representation of emotions and hotel aspects. Building upon this derived representation, we conducted a segmentation analysis to gauge distinct emotion and concern-based profiles of customers, as well as profiles of hotels with similar customer emotions using a self-organizing unsupervised algorithm. We demonstrated the practicality of our approach using 22,450 online reviews collected from 44 hotels.
