1. Reconstructing a Heavy Neutral Lepton at the LHC

Abstract: Heavy lepton singlets $N$ slightly mixed with a standard neutrino $\nu_\ell$ are usually searched for at the LHC in the trilepton plus $p_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$ channel: $pp \to W^+ \to \ell^+ N$ with $N\to \ell^- W^+ \to \ell^- \ell'^+ \nu$. We show that, although the longitudinal momentum of the final $\nu$ escapes detection, the mass of the heavy lepton can be reconstructed. This possibility has been overlooked in recent LHC searches. We show that for $m_N\approx 90$--$130$ GeV and the current luminosity (138 fb$^{-1}$ at 13 TeV), the bounds at the LHC could be competitive with the $|V_{\ell N}|^2\leq 10^{-3}$ limits from flavor and electroweak precision data., Comment: 11 pages, references added

Abstract: Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. 3. Spatial-aware Transformer-GRU Framework for Enhanced Glaucoma Diagnosis from 3D OCT Imaging

Abstract: Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, necessitates early detection for accurate and timely intervention to prevent irreversible vision loss. In this study, we present a novel deep learning framework that leverages the diagnostic value of 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging for automated glaucoma detection. In this framework, we integrate a pre-trained Vision Transformer on retinal data for rich slice-wise feature extraction and a bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit for capturing inter-slice spatial dependencies. This dual-component approach enables comprehensive analysis of local nuances and global structural integrity, crucial for accurate glaucoma diagnosis. Experimental results on a large dataset demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method over state-of-the-art ones, achieving an F1-score of 93.58%, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) of 73.54%, and AUC of 95.24%. The framework's ability to leverage the valuable information in 3D OCT data holds significant potential for enhancing clinical decision support systems and improving patient outcomes in glaucoma management.

5. BEE-NET: A deep neural network to identify in-the-wild Bodily Expression of Emotions

Abstract: In this study, we investigate how environmental factors, specifically the scenes and objects involved, can affect the expression of emotions through body language. To this end, we introduce a novel multi-stream deep convolutional neural network named BEE-NET. We also propose a new late fusion strategy that incorporates meta-information on places and objects as prior knowledge in the learning process. Our proposed probabilistic pooling model leverages this information to generate a joint probability distribution of both available and anticipated non-available contextual information in latent space. Importantly, our fusion strategy is differentiable, allowing for end-to-end training and capturing of hidden associations among data points without requiring further post-processing or regularisation. To evaluate our deep model, we use the Body Language Database (BoLD), which is currently the largest available database for the Automatic Identification of the in-the-wild Bodily Expression of Emotions (AIBEE). Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach surpasses the current state-of-the-art in AIBEE by a margin of 2.07%, achieving an Emotional Recognition Score of 66.33%.

6. Continual Learning of Diffusion Models with Generative Distillation

Abstract: Diffusion models are powerful generative models that achieve state-of-the-art performance in image synthesis. However, training them demands substantial amounts of data and computational resources. Continual learning would allow for incrementally learning new tasks and accumulating knowledge, thus enabling the reuse of trained models for further learning. One potentially suitable continual learning approach is generative replay, where a copy of a generative model trained on previous tasks produces synthetic data that are interleaved with data from the current task. However, standard generative replay applied to diffusion models results in a catastrophic loss in denoising capabilities. In this paper, we propose generative distillation, an approach that distils the entire reverse process of a diffusion model. Abstract: Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. Abstract: Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Abstract: The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. 10. Monochromatic neutrinos from dark matter through the Higgs portal

Abstract: We define a minimal model of dark matter with a fermion singlet $\chi$ coupled to the visible sector through the Higgs portal and with a heavy Dirac neutrino $N$ that opens the annihilation channel $\chi \chi \to N \nu$. The model provides the observed relic abundance consistently with bounds from direct searches and implies a monochromatic neutrino signal at 10 GeV-1 TeV in indirect searches. In particular, we obtain the capture rate of $\chi$ by the Sun and show that the signal could be above the "neutrino floor" produced by cosmic rays showering in the solar surface. In most benchmark models this solar astrophysical background is above the expected dark matter signal, so the model that we propose is a canonical example of WIMP not excluded by direct searches that could be studied at neutrino telescopes and also at colliders., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its reliance on subjective evaluation. However, recent advances in computer vision and deep learning have demonstrated the potential for automated assessment. In this paper, we survey recent studies on AI-based glaucoma diagnosis using fundus, optical coherence tomography, and visual field images, with a particular emphasis on deep learning-based methods. We provide an updated taxonomy that organizes methods into architectural paradigms and includes links to available source code to enhance the reproducibility of the methods. Through rigorous benchmarking on widely-used public datasets, we reveal performance gaps in generalizability, uncertainty estimation, and multimodal integration. Additionally, our survey curates key datasets while highlighting limitations such as scale, labeling inconsistencies, and bias. We outline open research challenges and detail promising directions for future studies. This survey is expected to be useful for both AI researchers seeking to translate advances into practice and ophthalmologists aiming to improve clinical workflows and diagnosis using the latest AI outcomes.

14. Photon to axion conversion during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Abstract: We investigate how the resonant conversion at a temperature $\bar{T}=25$-$65$ keV of a fraction of the CMB photons into an axion-like majoron affects BBN. The scenario, that assumes the presence of a primordial magnetic field and the subsequent decay of the majorons into neutrinos at $T\approx 1$ eV, has been proposed to solve the $H_0$ tension. We find two main effects. First, since we lose photons to majorons at $\bar{T}$, the baryon to photon ratio is smaller at the beginning of BBN $(T>\bar{T})$ than during decoupling and structure formation ($T\ll \bar{T}$). This relaxes the $2\sigma$ mismatch between the observed deuterium abundance and the one predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM model. Second, since the conversion implies a sudden drop in the temperature of the CMB during the final phase of BBN, it interrupts the synthesis of lithium and beryllium and reduces their final abundance, possibly alleviating the lithium problem., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; new section added, matches version accepted by JCAP

Abstract: We discuss the electromagnetic collisions of high energy protons, pions and kaons with atmospheric nuclei. In particular, we use the equivalent photon approximation to estimate (i) the diffractive collisions where the projectile scatters inelastically off a nucleus, and (ii) the usual radiative processes (bremsstrahlung, pair production and photonuclear interactions) of these charged hadrons in the air. Abstract: As input data distributions evolve, the predictive performance of machine learning models tends to deteriorate. In practice, new input data tend to come without target labels. Then, state-of-the-art techniques model input data distributions or model prediction distributions and try to understand issues regarding the interactions between learned models and shifting distributions. We suggest a novel approach that models how explanation characteristics shift when affected by distribution shifts. We find that the modeling of explanation shifts can be a better indicator for detecting out-of-distribution model behaviour than state-of-the-art techniques. We analyze different types of distribution shifts using synthetic examples and real-world data sets. We provide an algorithmic method that allows us to inspect the interaction between data set features and learned models and compare them to the state-of-the-art. Abstract: Abstract Background The EU Patient-cEntric clinicAl tRial pLatforms (EU-PEARL) project (IMI2-853966) aimed to develop tools to establish integrated research platforms (IRP) for conducting adaptive-design trials in various diseases, including metabolic-dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH). One essential component of a successful MASH IRP is a robust and reliable Clinical Research Network (CRN). Herein, we outline the required elements and anticipated steps to set-up such a CRN. Methods We identified European clinical research sites that could potentially serve as the foundation for MASH IRP and a CRN. A survey was sent to sites to assess their interest in joining a CRN, their familiarity with platform trials, and their capacity to participate in a future MASH IRP. Results A total of 141 investigators were invited to participate in the survey, and 40% responded. More than half of the answers (52%) identify MASH with advanced fibrosis (F3-4) as the subpopulation with the greatest unmet need. Regarding the difficulty in identifying candidates for trials, 65% find it is moderately difficult and 30% very difficult. Most respondents (94%) believe that a platform trial could offer substantial benefits to patients. Nearly all researchers express interest in participating in a platform trial (78%), with 22% indicating their interest would be contingent on initial industry funding. Conclusion While preliminary, our findings on responding sites are encouraging for the potential establishment of a CRN for a MASH IRP. However, funding schemes and sustainability strategies to provide proof-of-platform in MASH seem key in the short-term scenario.

Abstract: Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now termed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is an escalating health concern linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Despite liver biopsy being the gold standard, its invasiveness underscores the need for noninvasive diagnostic methods. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed to assess MASLD using the noninvasive OWLiver® serum lipidomics test in a cohort of 117 patients with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery, comparing outcomes with liver biopsy. Exclusions (n = 24) included insufficient data, liver disease etiology other than MASLD, corticosteroid treatment, excessive alcohol consumption, low glomerular filtration rate, and declination to participate. Comprehensive laboratory tests, demographic assessments, and liver biopsies were performed. Serum metabolites were analyzed using OWLiver®, a serum lipidomic test that discriminates between healthy liver, steatosis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and MASH with fibrosis ≥2 by means of three algorithms run sequentially. Results: Liver biopsy revealed a MASLD prevalence of 95.7%, with MASH present in 28.2% of cases. OWLiver® demonstrated a tendency to diagnose more severe cases. Body mass index (BMI), rather than the presence of type 2 diabetes, emerged as the sole independent factor linked to the probability of concordance. Abstract: Human Digital Twins (HDTs) are digital replicas of humans that either mirror a complete human body, some parts of it as can be organs, flows, cells, or even human behaviors. An HDT is a human specific replica application inferred from the digital twin (DT) manufacturing concept, defined as a technique that creates digital replicas of physical systems or processes aimed at optimizing their performance and supporting more accurate decision-making processes. The main goal of this paper is to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of current efforts in the HDT field, by browsing its basic concepts, differences with DTs, existing developments, and the distinct areas of application. The review methodology includes an exhaustive review of scientific literature, patents, and industrial initiatives, as well as a discussion about ongoing and foreseen HDT research activity, emphasizing its potential benefits and limitations.

Abstract: Sweet cherry intake affects oxidative stress and hepatic lipid metabolism, depending on composition, mainly (poly)phenol profile and daylight length. Thyroid hormones (TH) respond to daylight changes and regulate the hepatic glucose metabolism. This study investigated whether cherries with different phenolic hallmarks exhibit seasonal responses to TH and hepatic glucose metabolism. Fischer 344 rats fed a standard diet were chronically exposed to L6 (6 h light), L12 (12 h light), and L18 (18 h light) photoperiods and were supplemented with two sweet cherries (Ch1 and Ch2). Serum TH levels and glucose metabolism-related metabolites were affected by both the cherry composition and photoperiod. Thus, Ch1 and Ch2 reduced serum T3 levels in L6, whereas Ch2 increased it in L18, nullifying the photoperiod effect. Moreover, although photoperiod was the main factor affecting the hepatic expression of gluconeogenesis-related genes, Ch1 exerted effects mainly on L6 photoperiod and Ch2 on L18, tending to cancel out the photoperiod effects.

Abstract: The global growth of urban areas is unstoppable, and this growth is accompanied by an intensification of urban heat island effects, exacerbating the challenges of climate change and sustainable urban development in warm climates. In this context, understanding the intricate dynamics of these phenomena and their implications on the thermal behaviour of buildings becomes paramount. This study focuses on València, a Spanish city characterized by a Mediterranean climate, where the interplay between ground temperature variations, vegetation levels, and the thermal demands of buildings is investigated.Land surface temperature measurements derived from satellite data, specifically from the Landsat-8 mission, provide a valuable lens through which to assess the heat island effect. These measurements are harmonized with data collected from local weather stations to establish a robust foundation for evaluating the thermal dynamics of the urban environment. European standards, coupled with Geographic Information System technologies, enable the simulation of temperature variations, and facilitate a nuanced analysis of their impact on the thermal demands of a building.Moreover, recognizing the crucial role played by the urban climate in the influencing of heating and cooling needs, this study explores nature-based solutions implemented in València. By leveraging satellite-derived temperature and vegetation data over an extended period, it is possible to identify actions and elements that contribute positively to mitigating UHI effects and improving the overall climatic conditions. Results indicate that vegetation has a notable impact on local temperature, with distinct patterns observed in different seasons. The research incorporated the simulation of climate scenarios, introducing varying levels of vegetation. Results demonstrated a substantial reduction in cooling demand, particularly during the summer months. Buildings with a lower exterior surface-to-volume ratio exhibited a more pronounced reduction in energy consumption.

The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The GDR3 catalogue contains the same source list, celestial positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and broad band photometry in the G, G$_{BP}$, and G$_{RP}$ pass-bands already present in the Early Third Data Release. Abstract: The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been routinely observing Solar System objects (SSOs) since the beginning of its operations in August 2014. The Gaia data release three (DR3) includes, for the first time, the mean reflectance spectra of a selected sample of 60 518 SSOs, primarily asteroids, observed between August 5, 2014, and May 28, 2017. Each reflectance spectrum was derived from measurements obtained by means of the Blue and Red photometers (BP/RP), which were binned in 16 discrete wavelength bands. We describe the processing of the Gaia spectral data of SSOs, explaining both the criteria used to select the subset of asteroid spectra published in Gaia DR3, and the different steps of our internal validation procedures. In order to further assess the quality of Gaia SSO reflectance spectra, we carried out external validation against SSO reflectance spectra obtained from ground-based and space-borne telescopes and available in the literature. For each selected SSO, an epoch reflectance was computed by dividing the calibrated spectrum observed by the BP/RP at each transit on the focal plane by the mean spectrum of a solar analogue. The latter was obtained by averaging the Gaia spectral measurements of a selected sample of stars known to have very similar spectra to that of the Sun. Finally, a mean of the epoch reflectance spectra was calculated in 16 spectral bands for each SSO. The agreement between Gaia mean reflectance spectra and those available in the literature is good for bright SSOs, regardless of their taxonomic spectral class. We identify an increase in the spectral slope of S-type SSOs with increasing phase angle. Moreover, we show that the spectral slope increases and the depth of the 1 um absorption band decreases for increasing ages of S-type asteroid families., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract: With the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. Abstract: The third Gaia data release provides photometric time series covering 34 months for about 10 million stars. For many of those stars, a characterisation in Fourier space and their variability classification are also provided. This paper focuses on intermediate- to high-mass (IHM) main sequence pulsators M >= 1.3 Msun) of spectral types O, B, A, or F, known as beta Cep, slowly pulsating B (SPB), delta Sct, and gamma Dor stars. These stars are often multi-periodic and display low amplitudes, making them challenging targets to analyse with sparse time series. All datasets used in this analysis are part of the Gaia DR3 data release. The photometric time series were used to perform a Fourier analysis, while the global astrophysical parameters necessary for the empirical instability strips were taken from the Gaia DR3 gspphot tables, and the vsini data were taken from the Gaia DR3 esphs tables. We show that for nearby OBAF-type pulsators, the Gaia DR3 data are precise and accurate enough to pinpoint them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We find empirical instability strips covering broader regions than theoretically predicted. In particular, our study reveals the presence of fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators outside the strips, as well as the co-existence of rotationally modulated variables inside the strips as reported before in the literature. We derive an extensive period-luminosity relation for delta Sct stars and provide evidence that the relation features different regimes depending on the oscillation period. Finally, we demonstrate how stellar rotation attenuates the amplitude of the dominant oscillation mode of delta Sct stars.

Abstract: The third gaia data release (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products. The early part of the release, Gaia EDR3, already provided the astrometric and photometric data for nearly two billion sources. The full release now adds improved parameters compared to Gaia DR2 for radial velocities, astrophysical parameters, variability information, light curves, and orbits for Solar System objects. The improvements are in terms of the number of sources, the variety of parameter information, precision, and accuracy. For the first time, Gaia DR3 also provides a sample of spectrophotometry and spectra obtained with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer, binary star solutions, and a characterisation of extragalactic object candidates. Before the publication of the catalogue, these data have undergone a dedicated transversal validation process. The aim of this paper is to highlight limitations of the data that were found during this process and to provide recommendations for the usage of the catalogue. The validation was obtained through a statistical analysis of the data, a confirmation of the internal consistency of different products, and a comparison of the values to external data or models. Gaia DR3 is a new major step forward in terms of the number, diversity, precision, and accuracy of the Gaia products. As always in such a large and complex catalogue, however, issues and limitations have also been found. Detailed examples of the scientific quality of the Gaia DR3 release can be found in the accompanying data-processing papers as well as in the performance verification papers. Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. Abstract: The Gaia Galactic survey mission is designed and optimized to obtain astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy of nearly two billion stars in our Galaxy. Yet as an all-sky multi-epoch survey, Gaia also observes several million extragalactic objects down to a magnitude of G~21 mag. Due to the nature of the Gaia onboard selection algorithms, these are mostly point-source-like objects. Using data provided by the satellite, we have identified quasar and galaxy candidates via supervised machine learning methods, and estimate their redshifts using the low resolution BP/RP spectra. We further characterise the surface brightness profiles of host galaxies of quasars and of galaxies from pre-defined input lists. Here we give an overview of the processing of extragalactic objects, describe the data products in Gaia DR3, and analyse their properties. Two integrated tables contain the main results for a high completeness, but low purity (50-70%), set of 6.6 million candidate quasars and 4.8 million candidate galaxies. We provide queries that select purer sub-samples of these containing 1.9 million probable quasars and 2.9 million probable galaxies (both 95% purity). We also use high quality BP/RP spectra of 43 thousand high probability quasars over the redshift range 0.05-4.36 to construct a composite quasar spectrum spanning restframe wavelengths from 72-100 nm., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Abstract: The Gaia DR3 Catalogue contains for the first time about eight hundred thousand solutions with either orbital elements or trend parameters for astrometric, spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries, and combinations of them. This paper aims to illustrate the huge potential of this large non-single star catalogue. Using the orbital solutions together with models of the binaries, a catalogue of tens of thousands of stellar masses, or lower limits, partly together with consistent flux ratios, has been built. Properties concerning the completeness of the binary catalogues are discussed, statistical features of the orbital elements are explained and a comparison with other catalogues is performed. Illustrative applications are proposed for binaries across the H-R diagram. The binarity is studied in the RGB/AGB and a search for genuine SB1 among long-period variables is performed. The discovery of new EL CVn systems illustrates the potential of combining variability and binarity catalogues. Potential compact object companions are presented, mainly white dwarf companions or double degenerates, but one candidate neutron star is also presented. Towards the bottom of the main sequence, the orbits of previously-suspected binary ultracool dwarfs are determined and new candidate binaries are discovered. The long awaited contribution of Gaia to the analysis of the substellar regime shows the brown dwarf desert around solar-type stars using true, rather than minimum, masses, and provides new important constraints on the occurrence rates of substellar companions to M dwarfs. Several dozen new exoplanets are proposed, including two with validated orbital solutions and one super-Jupiter orbiting a white dwarf, all being candidates requiring confirmation. Abstract: Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their [alpha/Fe] ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. 31. The solar disk at high energies

Abstract: High energy cosmic rays "illuminate" the Sun and produce an image that could be observed in up to five different channels: a cosmic ray shadow (whose energy dependence has been studied by HAWC); a gamma ray flux (observed at $E\le 200$ GeV by Fermi-LAT); a muon shadow (detected by ANTARES and IceCube); a neutron flux (undetected, as there are no hadronic calorimeters in space); and a flux of high energy neutrinos. Since these signals are correlated, the ones already observed can be used to reduce the uncertainty in the still undetected ones. Here we define a simple set up that uses the Fermi-LAT and HAWC observations to imply very definite fluxes of neutrons and neutrinos from the solar disk. Un aspecto central es la situación de liminaridad en la que permanecen los desaparecidos y sus familiares, imposibilitando la clausura del duelo. Ello influye en las relaciones de filiación familiar con los antepasados desaparecidos violentamente, así como con los modos de reconocimiento e inclusión en calidad de víctimas en espacios de representación social más amplios. Sostengo el argumento de que la categoría de «desaparecido» es un espacio de reconocimiento y de acción jurídica y política pero, a la vez, es también una forma de capturar las reivindicaciones de los familiares y de los colectivos memorialistas de modo que en el acto de reclamar sus derechos quedan neutralizados políticamente.

Abstract: Gaia-CRF3 is the celestial reference frame for positions and proper motions in the third release of data from the Gaia mission, Gaia DR3 (and for the early third release, Gaia EDR3, which contains identical astrometric results). The reference frame is defined by the positions and proper motions at epoch 2016.0 for a specific set of extragalactic sources in the (E)DR3 catalogue. We describe the construction of Gaia-CRF3, and its properties in terms of the distributions in magnitude, colour, and astrometric quality. Compact extragalactic sources in Gaia DR3 were identified by positional cross-matching with 17 external catalogues of quasars (QSO) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), followed by astrometric filtering designed to remove stellar contaminants. Selecting a clean sample was favoured over including a higher number of extragalactic sources. For the final sample, the random and systematic errors in the proper motions are analysed, as well as the radio-optical offsets in position for sources in the third realisation of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF3). The Gaia-CRF3 comprises about 1.6 million QSO-like sources, of which 1.2 million have five-parameter astrometric solutions in Gaia DR3 and 0.4 million have six-parameter solutions. The sources span the magnitude range G = 13 to 21 with a peak density at 20.6 mag, at which the typical positional uncertainty is about 1 mas. The proper motions show systematic errors on the level of 12 ${\mu}$as yr${}^{-1}$ on angular scales greater than 15 deg. For the 3142 optical counterparts of ICRF3 sources in the S/X frequency bands, the median offset from the radio positions is about 0.5 mas, but exceeds 4 mas in either coordinate for 127 sources. We outline the future of the Gaia-CRF in the next Gaia data releases.

Abstract: To equip Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with explainability, it is essential to interpret how opaque models take specific decisions, understand what causes the errors, improve the architecture design, and identify unethical biases in the classifiers. This paper introduces ADVISE, a new explainability method that quantifies and leverages the relevance of each unit of the feature map to provide better visual explanations. To this end, we propose using adaptive bandwidth kernel density estimation to assign a relevance score to each unit of the feature map with respect to the predicted class. We also propose an evaluation protocol to quantitatively assess the visual explainability of CNN models. We extensively evaluate our idea in the image classification task using AlexNet, VGG16, ResNet50, and Xception pretrained on ImageNet. We compare ADVISE with the state-of-the-art visual explainable methods and show that the proposed method outperforms competing approaches in quantifying feature-relevance and visual explainability while maintaining competitive time complexity. Our experiments further show that ADVISE fulfils the sensitivity and implementation independence axioms while passing the sanity checks. Abstract: Recent advancements in communication technology have transformed the way the industrial system works. This digitalization has improved the way of communication between different actors involved in cyber physical production systems (CPPS), such as users, suppliers, and manufacturers, thus making the whole process transparent. The utilization of emerging new technologies in CPPS can cause vulnerable spots that can be exploited by attackers to launch sophisticated distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, hence threatening the availability of the production systems. Existing machine learning based intrusion detection systems (IDS) often rely on unrealistic datasets for training and validation, thus missing the crucial testing phase with real-time scenarios. The results generated by the ML models are based on predictions at each flow level and cannot provide summarized information about malicious entities. To address this limitation, this study proposed an efficient IDS system that uses both rule-based detection and ML-based approaches to detect DDoS attacks damaging the infrastructure of CPPS. For training and validation of the system, we use real-time network traffic extracted from a real industrial scenario, referred to as Farm-to-Fork (F2F) supply chain system. Both, attacks and normal traffic were captured, and bidirectional features were extracted through CIC-FLOWMETER. We make use of 8 ML supervised and unsupervised approaches to detect the malicious flows; and then a rule-based detection mechanism is used to calculate the frequency of the malicious flows and to assign different severity levels based on the computed frequency. The overall results show that supervised models outperform unsupervised approaches and achieve an accuracy 99.97% and TPR 99.96%. Overall, the weighted accuracy when tested and deployed in a real-time scenario is around 98.71%. The results prove that the system works better when considering real-time scenarios and provides comprehensive information about the detected results that can be used to take different mitigation actions.

In this complex scenario, new attack surfaces and vectors will emerge, due to the distributed, disaggregated, dynamic, programmable and open nature of the entire end-to-end 6G infrastructure along with the fragmentation of data, as well as the need for supporting cross-platforms interoperability, making the application of security and trust fundamentally challenging. To securely manage services in the future 6G mobile networks along with the set of functions ruling its management, conceptual work is needed to defining functional blocks supporting a secure end-to-end 6G systems management. This is especially critical in handling specific functionalities, such as network disaggregation, risk and threats business impact, energy-efficiency, self-configuration or dynamic discovery. This paper positions an innovative 6G security services management architecture, which builds on a set of innovative building blocks, leveraging key technologies, such as AI-assisted models and Digital Twin, while enabling a human-centric approach toward an end-to-end security solution. Two canonical workflows along with two illustrative application scenarios are proposed, Light Rail Transit and Extended Reality, to conceptually highlight the proposed architecture impact and its expected benefits when high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and secure communications are required.

Abstract: Abstract The dopaminergic system is firmly implicated in reversal learning but human measurements of dopamine release as a correlate of reversal learning success are lacking. Dopamine release and hemodynamic brain activity in response to unexpected changes in action-outcome probabilities are here explored using simultaneous dynamic [11C]Raclopride PET-fMRI and computational modelling of behavior. When participants encounter reversed reward probabilities during a card guessing game, dopamine release is observed in associative striatum. Individual differences in absolute reward prediction error and sensitivity to errors are associated with peak dopamine receptor occupancy. The fMRI response to perseverance errors at the onset of a reversal spatially overlap with the site of dopamine release. Trial-by-trial fMRI correlates of absolute prediction errors show a response in striatum and association cortices, closely overlapping with the location of dopamine release, and separable from a valence signal in ventral striatum. The results converge to implicate striatal dopamine release in associative striatum as a central component of reversal learning, possibly signifying the need for increased cognitive control when new stimuli-responses should be learned.

Abstract: The full deployment of sixth-generation (6G) networks is inextricably connected with a holistic network redesign able to deal with various emerging challenges, such as integration of heterogeneous technologies and devices, as well as support of latency and bandwidth demanding applications. In such a complex environment, resource optimization, and security and privacy enhancement can be quite demanding, due to the vast and diverse data generation endpoints and associated hardware elements. Therefore, efficient data collection mechanisms are needed that can be deployed at any network infrastructure. In this context, the network data analytics function (NWDAF) has already been defined in the fifth-generation (5G) architecture from Release 15 of 3GPP, that can perform data collection from various network functions (NFs). When combined with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques, a full-scale network optimization can be supported, according to traffic demands and service requirements. In addition, the collected data from NWDAF can be used for anomaly detection and thus, security and privacy enhancement. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to present the current state-of-the-art on the role of the NWDAF towards data collection, resource optimization and security enhancement in next generation broadband networks. Furthermore, various key enabling technologies for data collection and threat mitigation in the 6G framework are identified and categorized, along with advanced ML approaches. Finally, a high level architectural approach is presented and discussed, based on the NWDAF, for efficient data collection and ML model training in large scale heterogeneous environments.

Abstract: El proyecto de musealización del patrimonio del IES Isabel la Católica se remonta a 2006 cuando se empezó a recuperar el patrimonio del Instituto-Escuela, cuya Sección Retiro ocupó, entre 1928 y 1936, el edificio más antiguo de sus actuales instalaciones. Este ambicioso proyecto se inició con la ordenación y catalogación del archivo, la biblioteca y los laboratorios históricos de Biología y Geología del Instituto-Escuela, en los que se centralizó y se puso en valor el material conservado del experimento pedagógico que dicha institución llevó a cabo. Desde entonces, la biblioteca y los laboratorios históricos se convirtieron en espacios museísticos, donde se realizan actividades de difusión y uso didáctico del patrimonio del Instituto-Escuela. Después del paréntesis obligatorio de la pandemia, en 2021 continuó ese trabajo de recuperación, sumándole un nuevo proyecto: la catalogación y musealización del patrimonio del Instituto Isabel la Católica.

Abstract: The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multi-messenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). This review is aimed at promoting this cooperation by giving a state-of-the art account of the interdisciplinary expertise that is needed in the effective search of quantum gravity footprints in the production, propagation and detection of cosmic messengers., Comment: This review was written by participants of the COST Action CA18108. 45. A deep convolutional neural network for classification of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes

Abstract: Monitoring the spread of disease-carrying mosquitoes is a first and necessary step to control severe diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika or yellow fever. Previous citizen science projects have been able to obtain large image datasets with linked geo-tracking information. As the number of international collaborators grows, the manual annotation by expert entomologists of the large amount of data gathered by these users becomes too time demanding and unscalable, posing a strong need for automated classification of mosquito species from images. We introduce the application of two Deep Convolutional Neural Networks in a comparative study to automate this classification task. We use the transfer learning principle to train two state-of-the-art architectures on the data provided by the Mosquito Alert project, obtaining testing accuracy of 94%. In addition, we applied explainable models based on the Grad-CAM algorithm to visualise the most discriminant regions of the classified images, which coincide with the white band stripes located at the legs, abdomen, and thorax of mosquitoes of the Aedes albopictus species. The model allows us to further analyse the classification errors. Visual Grad-CAM models show that they are linked to poor acquisition conditions and strong image occlusions.

46. On the use of uncertainty in classifying Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes

Abstract: The re-emergence of mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), which kill hundreds of thousands of people each year, has been attributed to increased human population, migration, and environmental changes. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been used by several studies to recognise mosquitoes in images provided by projects such as Mosquito Alert to assist entomologists in identifying, monitoring, and managing MBD. Nonetheless, utilising CNNs to automatically label input samples could involve incorrect predictions, which may mislead future epidemiological studies. Furthermore, CNNs require large numbers of manually annotated data. In order to address the mentioned issues, this paper proposes using the Monte Carlo Dropout method to estimate the uncertainty scores in order to rank the classified samples to reduce the need for human supervision in recognising Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. The estimated uncertainty was also used in an active learning framework, where just a portion of the data from large training sets was manually labelled. The experimental results show that the proposed classification method with rejection outperforms the competing methods by improving overall performance and reducing entomologist annotation workload. 47. Explainable, automated urban interventions to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety

Abstract: At the moment, urban mobility research and governmental initiatives are mostly focused on motor-related issues, e.g. the problems of congestion and pollution. And yet, we can not disregard the most vulnerable elements in the urban landscape: pedestrians, exposed to higher risks than other road users. Indeed, safe, accessible, and sustainable transport systems in cities are a core target of the UN's 2030 Agenda. Thus, there is an opportunity to apply advanced computational tools to the problem of traffic safety, in regards especially to pedestrians, who have been often overlooked in the past. This paper combines public data sources, large-scale street imagery and computer vision techniques to approach pedestrian and vehicle safety with an automated, relatively simple, and universally-applicable data-processing scheme. The steps involved in this pipeline include the adaptation and training of a Residual Convolutional Neural Network to determine a hazard index for each given urban scene, as well as an interpretability analysis based on image segmentation and class activation mapping on those same images. Combined, the outcome of this computational approach is a fine-grained map of hazard levels across a city, and an heuristic to identify interventions that might simultaneously improve pedestrian and vehicle safety. The proposed framework should be taken as a complement to the work of urban planners and public authorities.

48. Cosmology of an Axion-Like Majoron

Abstract: We propose a singlet majoron model that defines an inverse seesaw mechanism in the $\nu$ sector. The majoron $\phi$ has a mass $m_\phi\approx 0.5$ eV and a coupling to the $\tau$ lepton similar to the one to neutrinos. In the early universe it is initially in thermal equilibrium, then it decouples at $T\approx 500$ GeV and contributes with just $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.026$ during BBN. At $T=26$ keV (final stages of BBN) a primordial magnetic field induces resonant $\gamma \leftrightarrow \phi$ oscillations that transfer 6% of the photon energy into majorons, implying $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.55$ and a 4.7% increase in the baryon to photon ratio. At $T\approx m_\phi$ the majoron enters in thermal contact with the heaviest neutrino and it finally decays into $\nu \bar \nu$ pairs near recombination, setting $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.85$. The boost in the expansion rate at later times may relax the Hubble tension (we obtain $H_0=(71.4\pm 0.5)$ km/s/Mpc), while the processes $ \nu\bar \nu \leftrightarrow \phi$ suppress the free streaming of these particles and make the model consistent with large scale structure observations. Its lifetime and the fact that it decays into neutrinos instead of photons lets this axion-like majoron avoid the strong bounds that affect other axion-like particles of similar mass and coupling to photons., Comment: 23 pages, version to appear in JCAP
