Abstract

The functional state of cells is dependent on their microenvironmental context. Prior studies described how polarizing cytokines alter macrophage transcriptomes and epigenomes. Here, we characterized the functional responses of 6 differentially polarized macrophage populations by measuring the dynamics of transcription factor nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) in response to 8 stimuli. The resulting dataset of single-cell NF-κB trajectories was analyzed by three approaches: (1) machine learning on time-series data revealed losses of stimulus distinguishability with polarization, reflecting canalized effector functions. (2) Informative trajectory features driving stimulus distinguishability (signaling codons) were identified and used for mapping a cell state landscape that could then locate macrophages conditioned by an unrelated condition. (3) Kinetic parameters, inferred using a mechanistic NF-κB network model, provided an alternative mapping of cell states and correctly predicted biochemical findings. Together, this work demonstrates that a single analytes dynamic trajectories may distinguish the functional states of single cells and molecular network states underlying them. 2. Tonic TNF conditioning of macrophages safeguards stimulus‐specific inflammatory responses

Abstract

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a key inflammatory cytokine that warns recipient cells of a nearby infection or tissue damage. Acute exposure to TNF activates characteristic oscillatory dynamics of the transcription factor NFκB and induces a characteristic gene expression program; these are distinct from the responses of cells directly exposed to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Here, we report that tonic TNF exposure is critical for safeguarding TNF's specific functions. In the absence of tonic TNF conditioning, acute exposure to TNF causes (i) NFκB signaling dynamics that are less oscillatory and more like PAMP-responsive NFκB dynamics, (ii) immune gene expression that is more similar to the Pam3CSK4 response program, and (iii) broader epigenomic reprogramming that is characteristic of PAMP-responsive changes. We show that the absence of tonic TNF signaling effects subtle changes to TNF receptor availability and dynamics such that enhanced pathway activity results in non-oscillatory NFκB. Our results reveal tonic TNF as a key tissue determinant of the specific cellular responses to acute paracrine TNF exposure, and their distinction from responses to direct exposure to PAMPs.

Abstract

Recent campaigns towards reducing the housing deficits and enhancing environmental sustainability in developing countries have led to increasing research efforts towards incorporating abundant natural materials into housing construction. One of such materials is oil palm broom fibres (OPBF) which began to attract research attention only recently for having the potential of being used as longitudinal reinforcement for concrete beams when combined as strands. This study provides some practical considerations and guidance for the design of OPBF-strand reinforced concrete using the flexural behaviour curves of 100 × 100 x 500 mm palm strand – reinforced prisms obtained from experimental investigation and parametric studies using finite element modelling. The study recommends the use of allowable stress design methodology for OPBF-strand reinforced concrete. A comparison of the carbon footprint between the OPBF- strand reinforced concrete beam and an equivalent steel reinforced concrete beam shows that the former could provide cheaper and eco-friendlier building material.

5. Moderating Effect of Thai Teachers' Perspective on the Relationship between Teaching Perspectives, Students' Engagement

Abstract

Studies on students' engagement in the academic field seem to be widely explored. Similar investigations at the primary education level remain at its infancy stage. Especially in Thailand where the literacy level is low. To achieve the study objectives, teachers at primary schools in Nakhon Si Thammarat province of Thailand were randomly selected and surveyed. The data retrieved were analyzed using structural equation modelling. The result reveals an insignificant relationship between teaching perspective and students' engagement. However, the teaching perspective inventory has a negative significant moderating effect. The research implication to education policymakers was extensively discussed.

Abstract

A survey of the malaria vectors in an area is a critical component of an effective vector control strategy. This study aimed to investigate the malaria vectors in four communities of Southern Gombe, Northeastern Nigeria. A total of 3200 adult female Anopheles reared from larvae in the four communities from two Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Southern Gombe were identified. Anopheles pretoriensis were dominant 1662 (51.9%) followed by An. gambiae sl 868(27.1%), An. maculipalpis 267(8.3), An. rufipes 252(7.9) and An. coustani 10(0.3%), and the least were An. pharoensis 6(0.2%). The remaining 135(4.3%) were unidentified. Of the 262 An. gambiae sl identified by species-specific PCR method, 135(51.5%) were found to be An. coluzzi, 60(22.9%) An. gambiae and only 1(0.4%) was An. arabiensis whereas hybrid constitutes 16(6.1%). To determine significant differences in species composition, the results from the four study sites were pooled together. Anopheles pretoriensis was significantly different from all the other species identified (p = 0.9999). There was a significant difference between the number of species identified as An. coluzzi and An. arabiensis (p = 0.0025). But there was no significant difference between An. coluzzi and An. gambiae (p = 0.1212). The heterogeneity and sympatry of Anopheles species observed is a threat to malaria control as the secondary vectors have behaviour that evades the current vector control interventions. It is expedient to re-strategize the vector control interventions in the study area.

Abstract

Gums are valuable excipients usually employed as emulsifiers in the preparation of pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic products. The emulsifying properties of Cola acuminata gum (CAG) derived from the pods of Cola acuminata were evaluated. Different batches of emulsions containing arachis oil (40% v/v) emulsified with distilled water were formulated respectively with tragacanth gum (TRG), acacia gum (ACG) and CAG at different concentrations (1.0-4.0% w/v). The different formulations were labelled as TRG1-TRG4, ACG1-ACG4 and CAG1-CAG4. Organoleptic properties real-time and accelerated stability studies of the emulsions were evaluated using centrifugation, thermal and freeze-thaw conditions. The rheology of the emulsions was measured using a Digital Synchroelectric viscometer (NDJ- 5S, China) with spindle 2 operated at various rotational speeds (6, 12, 30 and 60 rpm). In contrast, the microstructures of the emulsions were evaluated by photomicrography. CAG1, TRG1 and ACG1-ACG4 could not form stable emulsions. Real-time stability studies revealed that TRG2 and CAG2 cracked on days 3 and 7, respectively. TRG3 experienced creaming from the fourth week, while TRG4, CAG3 and CAG4 remained unchanged. Accelerated stability tests induced creaming in CAG3 and TRG4. The degree of creaming induced by various accelerated stability conditions was in the order of thermal > freeze-thaw > centrifugation. CAG4 showed no creaming throughout the experiment. All the emulsions exhibited pseudoplastic behaviour. There was no significant change in the viscosity of TRG3, TRG4, CAG3 and CAG4 after 8 weeks of storage. An increase in the concentration of the emulsifiers increased the emulsions’ viscosity and stability. There was an increase in the emulsions’ droplet size and a decrease in emulsions’ droplet number during storage, indicating gradual coalescence. CAG showed superior emulsifying properties.

Abstract

The planetary gear sets find application in the final stages of the helicopter transmission system. Unlike the single axis gear, the planetary gears have complex structural arrangement and unique operational characteristics which makes diagnosis of incipient fault much more challenging with planetary gears compared to the single axis gear. This study provides a background for effective planetary bearing fault analysis in an SA330 Super-Puma Helicopter Main gearbox by studying the characteristic of the planetary stage and investigating some prominent frequency components which are vital to fault feature extraction. Vibration data of healthy and faulty conditions at varying load regimes from a seeded fault experiment were captured. The analysis of the vibration transmission paths and the signal amplitude in the time and frequency domain provide the basis for the determination of the best signal quality. Eight transmission paths affecting the signal energy were established however, the shortest path to the radial direction of the faulty bearing assures better signal gain. The gear mesh frequencies and harmonics of the planetary stages are suppressed by the high amplitude frequencies of the forward, aft and bevel reduction gears. The impulsive carrier frequency at high speed has a strong correlation with gear-related frequencies. Though the fault frequencies can be traced in some instances, it is mostly dominated in the spectrum because of the gear-related frequencies and amplitude modulation of the planetary stages. This work enhances the planetary bearing fault extraction.

Abstract

This paper presents a study on the influence of inlet radial angle in a multi-inlet cyclone separator using Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) fluid dynamics approach. The investigation focuses on the behavior of air and solid particles within the cyclone. Air circulation was simulated at velocities ranging from 2 to 6 m/s, with inlet radial angles of 15°, 32°, 45°, 61°, and 72°. To model the turbulent flow, the Reynolds stress model (RSM) and renormalization group k-model (RNG) were employed, while the particle trajectories were simulated using the discrete phase model (DPM) in ANSYS Fluent. The purpose of this study was to determine how the inlet radial angle impacts various parameters: collection efficiency, pressure drop, cut-off diameter, axial velocity, and tangential velocity. The numerical data obtained from the simulations were validated and found to be consistent with the existing literature. The results revealed interesting findings. In the case of an inlet velocity of 6 m/s, the highest pressure drop of 84.5 Pa was observed for the 15° inlet radial angle, while the lowest pressure drop of 77.42 Pa was observed for the 32° inlet radial angle. It was found that the collection efficiency varied according to the radial angle of the inlet, with values of 89.00%, 91.70%, 92.50%, 94.77%, and 94.83% for 32°, 45°, 15°, 72°, and 61°, respectively. Additionally, at an inlet velocity of 2 m/s and a radial angle of 72°, 61°, 15°, 45°, and 32°, the corresponding cut-off sizes were determined to be 1.17 μm, 1.19 μm, 1.25 μm, 1.33 μm, and 1.38 μm, respectively. At an inlet velocity of 6 m/s, the peak tangential velocities were found to be approximately 1.48, 1.44, 1.44, 1.39, and 1.34 times the inlet velocity for the 15°, 72°, 61°, 45°, and 32° radial angles, respectively, within the axial location range of z = 1.5D to z = 3.4D. The peak axial velocity values for the 32°, 72°, 45°, 15°, and 61° radial angles, were reported as 0.85, 0.89, 0.92, 0.94, and 0.96 times the inlet velocity respectively.

Abstract

This study numerically evaluates the thermohydraulic performance of a circular tube consisting of semi-alternated twisted tape mounted with cylindrical baffles and ternary nanofluid (SiO2 + ZnO + CaO) as a working fluid. The circular tube wall was exposed to a sinusoidal temperature that axially varied along the wall. The investigation was performed in the laminar flow regime over the Reynolds number 500–2000 and for nanofluid volume fraction 0.01%-0.05%. The semi-alternated twisted tape has pitch ratio 1.77–5.77, width ratio 0.38–0.68 and thickness ratio 0.019–0.033. The performance was analyzed for Nusselt number, pressure drop, thermal performance factor and pumping power. The results indicate, no significant pressure drop increment with volume fraction of the ternary nanofluid. For a fixed volume fraction of 0.01%, width ratio of 0.48 and thickness ratio of 0.019, there is an improvement in Nusselt number by 35–107%, pressure drop increased from 0.26 Pa to 3.5 Pa, pumping power was found to increase by 40%, and thermal performance factor by 1.35–1.67 times that of the smooth tube, when the pitch ratio decreases from 5.77 to 1.77. For a fixed pitch ratio of 1.77 and width ratio 0.38–0.68, the Nusselt number increased by 50–114%, pressure drop increased from 0.207 Pa to 11.1 Pa and thermal performance factor by 1.18–1.76 times as compared with smooth tube. The Nusselt number increased by 100–115% and thermal performance factor increased from 1.08 to 1.16 times the performance of the smooth tube when the thickness ratio was increased from 0.019 to 0.033.

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted great attention due to their tremendous mechanical, thermal, structural and electrical properties leading to many promising applications. The unique and interesting properties of CNTs, such as their mechanical and electrical features, have fascinated industries and researchers to implement CNTs for production of different electromechanical devices. However, it is established that the phenomenon of buckling often occurs when CNTs are subjected to compressive loads and their frequencies under vibration are in order of Tera-Hz and Giga-Hz. Moreover, the profound dynamic behaviours of nanotube under the influences of slip when conveying fluid and magnetic field require a serious and meticulous study. Therefore, this study focuses on the vibration analysis of nanofluid-conveying embedded multi-walled branched nanotubes resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundation in a thermal-magnetic environment. Using Euler-Bernoulli theory, Hamilton's principle and nonlocal elasticity theory, fully coupled equations of motion governing the transverse and longitudinal vibrations of the nanotube are developed. Also, the equation of the deformation of the nanotubes as well as the pressure variation in the tubes are developed. Additionally, Navier-Stoke's equation and energy equation for the fluid and nanotube are coupled with the vibration models. The dynamics of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes when coupled with Navier-Stokes and energy equations require meticulous study as it is different from the usual assumption of plug flow. Therefore, in this present work, the developed coupled systems of nonlinear partial differential equations are solved using multi-dimensional numerical PDEs solvers coupled with PDE-tools in MATLAB. With the aids of the solutions, parametric studies were performed. The results indicate that increasing the downstream angle decreases the stability of the system. Also, the results obtained from the dynamic behaviour of the system indicate that the magnetic effect has an attenuating or damping effect of about 20 %. Furthermore, the plug flow assumption deviates from actual working processes by over 11 %. The analytical solutions verified and validated with existing analytical, numerical and experimental results. It is envisaged that the present study will give better insight into nanotubes design and serve as an index for subsequent works in the research area.

Abstract

The epigenome of macrophages can be reprogrammed by extracellular cues, but the extent to which different stimuli achieve this is unclear. Nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) is a transcription factor that is activated by all pathogen-associated stimuli and can reprogram the epigenome by activating latent enhancers. However, we show that NF-κB does so only in response to a subset of stimuli. This stimulus specificity depends on the temporal dynamics of NF-κB activity, in particular whether it is oscillatory or non-oscillatory. Non-oscillatory NF-κB opens chromatin by sustained disruption of nucleosomal histone-DNA interactions, enabling activation of latent enhancers that modulate expression of immune response genes. Thus, temporal dynamics can determine a transcription factor's capacity to reprogram the epigenome in a stimulus-specific manner.

Abstract

Cellular responses to environmental changes are encoded in the complex temporal patterns of signaling proteins. However, quantifying the accumulation of information over time to direct cellular decision-making remains an unsolved challenge. This is, in part, due to the combinatorial explosion of possible configurations that need to be evaluated for information in time-course measurements. Here, we develop a quantitative framework, based on inferred trajectory probabilities, to calculate the mutual information encoded in signaling dynamics while accounting for cell-cell variability. We use it to understand NFκB transcriptional dynamics in response to different immune threats, and reveal that some threats are distinguished faster than others. Our analyses also suggest specific temporal phases during which information distinguishing threats becomes available to immune response genes; one specific phase could be mapped to the functionality of the IκBα negative feedback circuit. The framework is generally applicable to single-cell time series measurements, and enables understanding how temporal regulatory codes transmit information over time.

21. Influence of stenosis severity on hemodynamics flow at low Reynolds numbers: A computational fluid dynamic study

Abstract

The restriction of blood flow due to narrowing of arteries that supply blood to different parts of the body leads to high blood pressure and cholesterol in humans. In this study, blood flow in a 3D model of arterial stenosis was examined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The geometry of the stenosis was modeled using ANSYS software, and a structured tetrahedral mesh was generated for accurate representation. The CFD analysis was performed using the ANSYS (FLUENT) 19.2 commercial code to investigate three stenosis levels of 75%, 50%, and 25% over the Reynolds number range of 500-2000 with blood as the working fluid. The blood flowed steadily upstream of the stenosis as incompressible, homogeneous, and Newtonian, while the artery is considered to be inflexible. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the low Reynolds number SST k-ω turbulence model were employed to simulate the blood flow. The governing equations are solved, and the pressure-velocity coupling is handled using the SIMPLEC algorithm. The steady state velocity and pressure generated at the inlet and outlet of the artery enabled the hemodynamic properties and flow reversal through arteries with a progressive amount of atherosclerosis to be determined. The results are presented in terms of velocity distribution, streamlines, and turbulence intensity contours. The results showed that at the throat (Z = 0) of the 75% stenosis, the relative magnitude of the velocity is greater than or equal to four times the average velocity. Reversal of flow is visible at for Re = 500 and for Re = 750 and Re = 2000. Furthermore, the effects of 25% stenosis on the flow pattern are relatively blunt and weak at . The throat of the stenosis, or a site therein, exhibits the highest value of centerline velocity, while turbulence intensity becomes severe at the post-stenotic site and they both increase with increasing stenosis level. The study provides valuable insights into the velocity distribution, flow reversal phenomenon, and turbulence intensity in arterial stenosis. The findings highlight the significant impact of stenosis levels and Reynolds numbers on the hemodynamic behavior, offering important considerations for understanding and managing arterial health issues.

Abstract

Over one third of the world’s crops– including fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices, and oilseed–‎require insect pollination, and human reliance on ‎pollination services by honey bees (Apis ‎mellifera) to promote these crops continues to rise due to increasing demands from growing ‎human ‎populations. Identifying the effects of urbanization on genetic diversity on this ‎pollinating insect is important in the field of bioscience. This study aimed to investigate genetic diversity of A. mellifera in Kwara State, Nigeria, using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker. ‎Thirty honey bees ‎were simultaneously collected from both rural and urban regions in ‎Kwara state, Nigeria. Samples were morphologically identified using ‎standard methods, ‎genomic DNA isolated and amplified using five RAPD primers. Data collected were ‎analysed using PyElph, ‎ARLEQUIN, and GeneAlEx version 6.501 software. The results ‎showed that the DNA fragment sizes produced per primer varied from 200 to ‎‎3000 bp. Percentages of polymorphic loci amplified by each primer varied from 17.33 to 33.33%. ‎Analysis of unbiased Nei genetic ‎distance values showed that Agbede (rural) and Adewole ‎‎(urban) showed the highest value of unbiased genetic distance (0.073), while ‎Amoyo ‎‎(rural) to Idofian (urban) exhibited the lowest value (0.027). Dendrogram analysis revealed ‎genetically close relationships among the sampled ‎A. mellifera‎ populations. The low level of genetic ‎polymorphisms observed among the honey bee populations in the two ‎regions ‎indicated that there is genetic relatedness among them. This study concluded that RAPD ‎marker is a useful method for ‎understanding population genetic structure of the African honey ‎bees. These results can be used as baseline information for future genetic ‎diversity ‎assessment of honey bees in Nigeria with larger samples. It is therefore recommended that ‎there is a need to safeguard the genetic ‎diversity of A. mellifera‎ to prevent extinction or ‎gradual loss of diversity‎‎‎.

Artificial intelligence techniques are increasingly being integrated into animal husbandry and animal revolution management because they provide advantages and means that serve agriculturalists. These techniques monitor the emotional state of animals, milk production and herd management, feeding habits, the movement of animals, and their health status. AI-powered sensors can monitor the health of livestock and detect early signs of illness or stress to which they are exposed. Also, these techniques contribute to assisting agriculturalists in customising feeding programs, reducing waste, and improving product quality. This article will discuss the role of artificial intelligence techniques in animal control, farm management, disease surveillance, and sustainable resource optimisation practices.

Abstract

Tribolium castaneum also known as red flour beetle is one of the most important pests of stored grain product with a cosmopolitan distribution in Nigeria and all over the world contributing to food spoilage. The aim of this study was to characterize the T. castaneum by morphometric and molecular analyses. Samples of yam flour with evidence of the red flour beetles present inside were obtained from four locations in Kwara, Kogi, Oyo and Ekiti states in Nigeria. Morphological and molecular identifications of T. castaneum were carried out using standard methods. A dissecting microscope was used to identify the beetles and measurements were taken using ImageJ. Genomic DNA was extracted and checked on 1.5% agarose gel to confirm the presence of DNA. Species-specific primers were used to amplify mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene of T. castaneum and the PCR amplicon size was also checked on 1.5% agarose. Morphometric measurements showed that the highest mean number (33.00±4.24 mm) of T. castaneum larvae observed was recorded on day 61 in Ilorin and the lowest was in Iwo, Osun state (4.00±0.00 mm) on the same day. The mean of the total body length of larvae from sampling sites was (1.31±0.37 mm) with minimum and (1.63±1.14 mm) maximum lengths respectively. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the mean length of the larvae collected from the study locations. Aligned cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences of 313bp were analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis inferred by maximum likelihood method showed that the T. castaneum sequences analyzed for this study and sequences obtained from GenBank formed a monophyletic group. The molecular and phylogenetic analyses confirmed the presence of a single species of T. castaneum. The results from this study showed low levels of genetic diversity and variability in the studied T. castaneum populations. The observed genetic similarity in T. castaneum could be due to the fact that they were probably from similar origin when compared with those in the GenBank database. However, further studies are needed with more samples to characterize T. castaneum species from stored food grains across Nigeria.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of tube layout configurations on the hydraulic-thermal performance of shell-and-tube heat exchangers (STHXs) as waste heat recovery systems. The STHXs are triangular (30°, STHX-T), rotated triangular (60°, STHX-RT), and combined (STHX-C). Water at a temperature of 10 °C was circulated through a bundle of tubes inlet to recover waste heat from hot water at the temperature of 65 °C. Water was circulated through the shell inlet within the mass flow rate range of 0.5 ≤ ṁ ≤ 3.5 kg/s. ANSYS-Fluent was used to perform a three-dimensional computational study under steady-state conditions. The turbulence model, realizable k-epsilon, was adopted because of the possible transition from laminar to turbulence. The results were validated with the Kern correlation for shell-side heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. The temperatures, pressure drop, velocity, and overall heat transfer coefficient for all the cases were compared. Temperature contours, pressure contour, velocity vector, and velocity contour were presented for flow visualization. When the simulation results of the different STHXs were compared, the results revealed that the STHX-T layout has the highest overall heat transfer coefficient of 2307.09 W/m2K. The maximum pressure drop of 242.42 Pa, highest temperature drop in the shell zone of 4.48 K, and highest temperature rise in the tube side of 6.67 K, followed by STHX-C and STHX-RT layout were obtained.

Background: Maternal health is the mother's state of well-being before, during, and after conception. Studies have suggested that the increasing maternal mortality rate is preventable provided maternal health services are accessible during pregnancy. This study explored the association between socioeconomic status and the utilization of maternal health services in the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State. Materials and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey. One hundred and eighty-eight pregnant women from the antenatal unit of a tertiary hospital in Southwestern Nigeria were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected via a pretested, self-designed questionnaire. The descriptive statistics were used to analyze the resulting data, and the hypotheses were tested using the Pearson product-moment correlation at 0.05 level of significance. Result: From the study, 72 (38.30%) and 58 (30.90%) agreed that their income and occupation influence their maternal health services utilization. Significant relationship (p < 0.05) existed between maternal health service utilization and age and between socioeconomic factors (occupation and income level) and utilization of maternal health services of pregnant women. Conclusions: Overall, this study revealed that the level of utilization of maternal health services among expectant women attending FMC is moderate. As this study has shown that socioeconomic factors influence the utilization of maternal health services, we recommend that interventions by health workers targeted at improving the utilization of maternal health services should consider these factors when designing such interventions. It is hoped that this will contribute to reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in this state.

Abstract Objective We developed a national survey to assess the changes implemented by respiratory departments across England in response to the first wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods An online survey was sent to the respiratory clinical leads in 132 NHS trusts in England. The survey was open between 10 August 2020 and 25 September 2020. Results Fifty‐three responses (42%) are included in our results. The total number of non‐critical care led Level 2 beds (requiring care for single organ failure—capable of managing continuous positive airways pressure, CPAP) increased by 159% at peak COVID activity from levels prior to COVID‐19. CPAP was used solely in side‐rooms in 9% of sites, and 57% and 31% of sites used CPAP in closed bays and closed wards, respectively. Fifteen sites (28%) reported shortages of non‐vented non‐invasive ventilation (NIV) masks and 12 sites (23%) CPAP machines. There was regional variation. Conclusions The number of beds capable of managing patients requiring CPAP increased significantly. We found deviations from previous standards of care, which likely reflects the pressure faced by hospitals in managing patients with COVID‐19. The regional variation in equipment shortages suggests moving resources between regions may have been beneficial.

Abstract Agricultural value chains worldwide provide essential support to livelihoods, ecosystem services, and the growing bioeconomy. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic slowed down or reversed decades of agricultural growth and exposed the vulnerabilities of farmers and the food insecure in Africa, thus reiterating the need to build resilience, agility, and adaptability for a sustainable agriculture. Existing social, political, environmental, and economic challenges demonstrate that a path to faster sustainable growth is increased productivity through improved input quality, of which technical inputs are a part. This work presents a perspective calling for African innovative competence in technological and methodological applications and solutions as part of the most critical area of a holistic organization for social progress. It finds that while performances of previous agricultural transformation efforts offer insights for future directions, novel pathways fitting to the diversity of situations and contexts on the continent are needed. These may include vertical agriculture in land‐constrained regions to grow high‐value products, ocean or sea farming in coastal regions, development of multiple‐harvesting crops, and self‐replicating plants. Developing standards that integrate current scientific methodologies and technologies with indigenous knowledge for agricultural growth and disaster management will bring the complementary benefits of both worlds into optimal development.

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical analysis of flow and thermal characteristics in a plain tube with various inserts, including a stent, torus ring, and surface-grooved twisted tape, using a ternary nanofluid consisting of SiO2, ZnO, and CaO nanoparticles as the working fluid. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted using ANSYS Fluent commercial codes, focusing on laminar Reynolds numbers ranging from 500 to 2000 and a non-uniform wall temperature profile. The objective is to investigate the Nusselt number, pressure drop, thermal performance, and pumping power of the ternary nanofluid with nanoparticle concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.05%, considering various geometrical parameters of the grooved twisted tape insert, such as thickness ratio (0.019–0.033), width ratio (0.38–0.68), and pitch ratio (1.77–5.77). The results show that flow and thermal indicators such as Nusselt number, thermal performance factor, pressure drop and pumping power increased with thickness and width ratios. Conversely, an increase in pitch ratio results in lower flow and thermal indicators. For instance, in a plane tube without inserts, no noticeable difference in pressure drop is observed and the thermal performance factor is about 1.87-1.25 times that of pure water when nanoparticle concentration is increased from 0.01 to 0.05%. The width ratio 0.68, thickness ratio 0.033 and pitch ratio 1.77 yielded a maximum thermal performance factor of about 1.4, 1.7 and 2.3 more than smooth tube, respectively, and a maximum pumping power 0.000654 W, 0.000223 W and 0.00020 W, respectively. The findings emphasize significant improvements in heat transfer and flow properties, shedding light on the innovative configuration's potential application as an improved heat exchanger. This research advances understanding of ternary nanofluid behavior and provides useful information for enhancing heat transfer in a variety of engineering applications.

For sustainable low-carbon cities, using sustainable urban energy system solutions is imperative. CO2-based bionanofluid is one proposed energy system solution that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. This paper examines the thermal-hydraulic and entropy production properties of mango bark/CO2 nanofluid for industrial-inclined gas cooling applications. The influence of gravitational force (in terms of tube inclination angle), volume fraction, and Reynolds number on the heat transfer, pressure drop, and entropy production of CO2-based mango bark nanofluids in laminar flow through a circular aluminum tube are numerically studied. The bionanofluid flows through a tube with an inner radius of 2.25 mm, a length of 970.0 mm, and an initial temperature of 320.0 K. A constant heat flux of −10.0 W/m2 is applied to the flow at its walls. The laminar flow regime with Reynolds numbers of 100, 400, 700, and 1000 are subjected to flow inclinations of ±90°, ±60°, ±45°, ±30°, and 0° and bionanofluid volume fractions of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0%. Results show that ±45° tube inclination angle offers the optimal heat transfer coefficient, maximum pressure drop, and minimum total entropy production rates for Re > 100; however, for Re = 100, these occur at the inclination angle of −30° and +60°. The pressure drop shows less sensitivity to the inclination angle; however, it offers peak values at the same inclination angles as the heat transfer coefficient for the respective Reynolds number values. The maximum thermal enhancements due to gravitational effect are 42%, 93.98%, 121.28%, and 150% for Reynolds numbers of 100, 400, 700, and 1000, respectively, while that due to nanofluid volume fraction are less than 16%.

The utilization of non-renewable energy resources necessitates the power sector's adoption of alternative energy sources, including photovoltaic and wind power generation systems. This academic investigation utilizes two machine learning methodologies, in particular, the study utilizes the random forest and support vector machine algorithms. to conduct its analyses. predict the velocity of the wind in the Diyala governorate of Iraq for the subsequent time interval. This is achieved solely by utilizing historical monthly time series data as input predictors. The three performance metrics employed encompass the coefficient of assurance (R2), root cruel square mistake (RMSE), and cruel outright blunder (MAE). The findings demonstrate that utilizing a lag of 12 months in the time series data (the maximum lag duration tested) as input predictors leads to the most accurate predictions in terms of performance. However, the prediction performance of the two algorithms used was almost similar (RF's RMSE, MAE, and R2 were 0.237, 0.180, and 0.836, while for SVM were 0.223, 0.171, and 0.856). The capacity to anticipate wind speed constitutes a paramount advantage to Iraq, given its current predicament in the electric power industry, and this has the potential to enable stakeholders to forecast oversupply or undersupply and implement pre-emptive measures.

To model and forecast complex time series data, machine learning has become a major field. This machine learning study examined Moscow rainfall data's future performance. The dataset is split into 65% training and 35% test sets to build and validate the model. We compared these deep learning models using the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) statistic. The LSTM model outperforms the BILSTM and GRU models in this data series. These three models forecast similarly. This information could aid the creation of a complete Moscow weather forecast book. This material would benefit policymakers and scholars. We also believe this study can be used to apply machine learning to complex time series data, transcending statistical approaches.

Abstract

Nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) is a transcription factor that controls inflammation and cell survival. In clinical histology, elevated NFκB activity is a hallmark of poor prognosis in inflammatory disease and cancer, and may be the result of a combination of diverse micro-environmental constituents. While previous quantitative studies of NFκB focused on its signaling dynamics in single cells, we address here how multiple stimuli may combine to control tissue level NFκB activity. We present a novel, simplified model of NFκB (SiMoN) that functions as an NFκB activity calculator. We demonstrate its utility by exploring how type I and type II interferons modulate NFκB activity in macrophages. Whereas, type I IFNs potentiate NFκB activity by inhibiting translation of IκBα and by elevating viral RNA sensor (RIG-I) expression, type II IFN amplifies NFκB activity by increasing the degradation of free IκB through transcriptional induction of proteasomal cap components (PA28). Both cross-regulatory mechanisms amplify NFκB activation in response to weaker (viral) inducers, while responses to stronger (bacterial or cytokine) inducers remain largely unaffected. Our work demonstrates how the NFκB calculator can reveal distinct mechanisms of crosstalk on NFκB activity in interferon-containing microenvironments.

Abstract

Utilization of synthetic dyes in different sectors has been identified as one of the major sources of environmental degradation; as a result, removal of their remnants from the industrial effluent is highly encouraged for conserving our environment. In this study, the synthesized plantain leaf biochar (PLB) was used for adsorbing synthetic malachite green (MG). The synthesized PLB was characterized through pHpzc, BET, XRD, SEM and FTIR spectrometry. The sequestration of MG onto PLB confirmed by FTIR and SEM was optimized by varying the adsorption parameters. The BET surface area (986.35 m2/g) and average pore diameter (44.13 Å) showcased PLB as an efficient mesoporous biochar capable of adsorbing MG (>99%) at optimum conditions of pH (8.0), initial MG concentration (50 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (0.2 g/L), contact time (80 min) and temperature of 301 K. Redlich-Peterson and Avrami fractional model best fitted the adsorption isotherm and kinetic model, respectively. ΔGo and ΔHo being negative confirmed the feasibility and exothermic nature of the adsorption process. The outstanding regeneration (>97%) of PLB after the fifth regeneration cycle established PLB as a potential sustainable green adsorbent for future industrial wastewater treatment.

This work presents a three-dimensional computational study of nanoparticles (metallic and non-metallic) suspended in blood flowing through a diseased artery with both stenosis and aneurysm. From the perspective of pharmacodynamics and heat transfer, the influence of nanoparticles on hemodynamic indicators was investigated in a diseased artery. The blood was flowing fluid, steady-state, incompressible, homogeneous, and Newtonian, while the artery was a rigid wall. The three-dimensional continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations were solved numerically by using a RAN-based standard k-ω model, which was performed on the ANSYS commercial software package. The influence of different selected nanoparticles (Al2O3, CuO, SiO2, and ZnO), nanoparticle concentration (1.0%-4.0%), and nanoparticle diameters (25 nm - 100 nm) on hemodynamic parameters such as velocity, temperature, turbulence intensity, more particularly skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number of the blood flow on the diseased artery, was also investigated. The streamlines, contours, and plots were adopted to better visualize the blood flow behavior in an artery with stenosis and aneurysm. The numerical results revealed that at a 4.0% nanoparticle concentration, CuO nanoparticles greatly reduced the blood velocity by 1.96% compared to other nanoparticles. About 0.66%-2.05% reduction in the blood velocity could be achieved by increasing the nanoparticle concentration from 1.0% to 4.0%. The SiO2 blood nanofluid showed the best result in augmentation of the Nusselt number by 53.0%. However, the nanoparticle diameter and concentration showed an insignificant effect on the skin friction factor

Abstract Background: The study aims to establish the pattern of fetal heart rates in the first and second trimesters and determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in the first-trimester fetal heart rate (FHR) of males and females. Methods: This retrospective observational research is a study of FHRs measured at 11 + 0 –13 + 6 wk and 18 + 0 –23 + 6 wk, and ultrasound scan-diagnosed fetal sex at 18 + 0 –23 + 6 wk. Singleton fetuses with nonambiguous external genitalia were recruited. The FHR was measured in B or M mode with Pulsed Wave Doppler, while ultrasound appearance of external genitalia determined the fetal sex at 18 + 0 –23 + 6 weeks. Student's t-test and Chi-square test were used for data analysis, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 2437 pregnancies meeting the study criteria were analyzed. The fetal sexes were 1398 (57.4%) males and 1039 (42.6%) females. There was no statistically significant difference in the first-trimester FHR between males and females (p = 0.74). However, females had higher mean FHR in both the first and second trimesters (First trimester: 165.4 ± 18.2 bpm vs 163.2 ± 17.1 bpm and Second trimester: 150.9 ± 22.6 bpm vs 141.9 ± 23.1 bpm). The FHR reduces with the increase in gestational age. Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in the first-trimester FHRs between sexes.
