This study analyzed Pennsylvania School Climate Survey data from students and staff in the 2021/22 school year to assess the validity and reliability of the elementary school student version of the survey; approaches to scoring the survey in individual schools at all grade levels; and perceptions of school climate across student, staff, and school groups. The survey encourages data-informed efforts in participating Pennsylvania schools to foster supportive learning environments that promote social and emotional wellness for students and staff. The study validated the elementary school student survey but found that one domain--safe and respectful school climate--did not meet the reliability threshold and thus suggests that revisions are needed. At all grade levels noninstructional staff had the most positive perceptions of school climate, followed by classroom teachers then students. The study found that different approaches to combining the school climate scores of students, teachers, and noninstructional staff within schools yielded slightly different distributions of school climate summary index scores. It also found that different performance category thresholds resulted in similar distributions of schools across categories. Scores calculated using simple averages were strongly and positively correlated with scores calculated using a more complex approach (Rasch models), suggesting that both approaches deliver similar information. School climate scores varied across student groups (defined by race/ethnicity, gender, and grade level) within schools and across school groups. Larger schools and schools with higher percentages of Black students tended to have lower school climate scores than other schools. The findings can inform the Pennsylvania Department of Education's decisionmaking on revisions to the elementary school student survey, approaches to scoring and reporting survey results, and efforts to increase participation in future survey administrations.

In response to numerous programs seeking to advance quantum education and workforce development in the United States, experts from academia, industry, government, and professional societies convened for a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop in February 2024 to explore the benefits and challenges of establishing a national center for quantum education. Broadly, such a center would foster collaboration and build the infrastructure required to develop a diverse and quantum-ready workforce. The workshop discussions centered around how a center could uniquely address gaps in public, K-12, and undergraduate quantum information science and engineering (QISE) education. Specifically, the community identified activities that, through a center, could lead to an increase in student awareness of quantum careers, boost the number of educators trained in quantum-related subjects, strengthen pathways into quantum careers, enhance the understanding of the U.S. quantum workforce, and elevate public engagement with QISE. Core proposed activities for the center include professional development for educators, coordinated curriculum development and curation, expanded access to educational laboratory equipment, robust evaluation and assessment practices, network building, and enhanced public engagement with quantum science.

Estimated brain age from magnetic resonance image (MRI) and its deviation from chronological age can provide early insights into potential neurodegenerative diseases, supporting early detection and implementation of prevention strategies. Diffusion MRI (dMRI), a widely used modality for brain age estimation, presents an opportunity to build an earlier biomarker for neurodegenerative disease prediction because it captures subtle microstructural changes that precede more perceptible macrostructural changes. However, the coexistence of macro- and micro-structural information in dMRI raises the question of whether current dMRI-based brain age estimation models are leveraging the intended microstructural information or if they inadvertently rely on the macrostructural information. To develop a microstructure-specific brain age, we propose a method for brain age identification from dMRI that minimizes the model's use of macrostructural information by non-rigidly registering all images to a standard template. Imaging data from 13,398 participants across 12 datasets were used for the training and evaluation. We compare our brain age models, trained with and without macrostructural information minimized, with an architecturally similar T1-weighted (T1w) MRI-based brain age model and two state-of-the-art T1w MRI-based brain age models that primarily use macrostructural information. We observe difference between our dMRI-based brain age and T1w MRI-based brain age across stages of neurodegeneration, with dMRI-based brain age being older than T1w MRI-based brain age in participants transitioning from cognitively normal (CN) to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but younger in participants already diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Approximately 4 years before MCI diagnosis, dMRI-based brain age yields better performance than T1w MRI-based brain ages in predicting transition from CN to MCI.

Proper quality control (QC) is time consuming when working with large-scale medical imaging datasets, yet necessary, as poor-quality data can lead to erroneous conclusions or poorly trained machine learning models. Most efforts to reduce data QC time rely on outlier detection, which cannot capture every instance of algorithm failure. Thus, there is a need to visually inspect every output of data processing pipelines in a scalable manner. We design a QC pipeline that allows for low time cost and effort across a team setting for a large database of diffusion weighted and structural magnetic resonance images. Our proposed method satisfies the following design criteria: 1.) a consistent way to perform and manage quality control across a team of researchers, 2.) quick visualization of preprocessed data that minimizes the effort and time spent on the QC process without compromising the condition or caliber of the QC, and 3.) a way to aggregate QC results across pipelines and datasets that can be easily shared. In addition to meeting these design criteria, we also provide information on what a successful output should be and common occurrences of algorithm failures for various processing pipelines. Our method reduces the time spent on QC by a factor of over 20 when compared to naively opening outputs in an image viewer and demonstrate how it can facilitate aggregation and sharing of QC results within a team. We measure the time-integrated CP asymmetry in $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow c\overline{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 fb$^{-1}$ and 427 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The D$^{0}$ decays are required to originate from the $D^{*+} \rightarrow D^{0}\pi^{+}$ decay, which determines the charm flavor at production time. A control sample of $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decays is used to correct for production and detection asymmetries.The result, ($-$1.4 $\pm$ 1.3(\text{stat.})$\pm$ 0.1(\text{syst.}))\%, is consistent with previous determinations and with CP symmetry., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2410.22961

We present measurements of the microlensing optical depth and event rate toward the Galactic bulge using the dataset from the 2006--2014 MOA-II survey, which covers 22 bulge fields spanning ~42 deg^2 between -5 deg < l < 10 deg and -7 deg < b < -1 deg. In the central region with |l|<5 deg, we estimate an optical depth of {\tau} = [1.75+-0.04]*10^-6exp[(0.34+-0.02)(3 deg-|b|)] and an event rate of {\Gamma} = [16.08+-0.28]*10^-6exp[(0.44+-0.02)(3 deg-|b|)] star^-1 year^-1 using a sample consisting of 3525 microlensing events, with Einstein radius crossing times of tE < 760 days and source star magnitude of IsWe confirm our results are consistent with the latest measurements from OGLE-IV 8 year dataset (Mr\'oz et al. 2019). We find our result is inconsistent with a prediction based on Galactic models, especially in the central region with |b|<3 deg. These results can be used to improve the Galactic bulge model, and more central regions can be further elucidated by future microlensing experiments, such as The PRime-focus Infrared Microlensing Experiment (PRIME) and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

Iterative algorithms solve problems by taking steps until a solution is reached. Models in the form of Deep Thinking (DT) networks have been demonstrated to learn iterative algorithms in a way that can scale to different sized problems at inference time using recurrent computation and convolutions. However, they are often unstable during training, and have no guarantees of convergence/termination at the solution. This paper addresses the problem of instability by analyzing the growth in intermediate representations, allowing us to build models (referred to as Deep Thinking with Lipschitz Constraints (DT-L)) with many fewer parameters and providing more reliable solutions. Additionally our DT-L formulation provides guarantees of convergence of the learned iterative procedure to a unique solution at inference time. We demonstrate DT-L is capable of robustly learning algorithms which extrapolate to harder problems than in the training set. We perform a model-independent measurement of the $D^0$-$\overline{D}{}^0$ mixing parameters using samples of $e^+e^-$-collision data collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments that have integrated luminosities of $951\ \text{fb}^{-1}$ and $408\ \text{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. Approximately $2.05\times10^6$ neutral $D$ mesons are reconstructed in the $D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S}\pi^+\pi^-$ channel, with the neutral $D$ flavor tagged by the charge of the pion in the $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0\pi^+$ decay. Assuming charge-parity symmetry, the mixing parameters are measured to be $ x = (4.0\pm1.7\pm0.4)\times 10^{-3} $ and $ y = (2.9\pm1.4\pm0.3)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with previous determinations.

We introduce Orb, a family of universal interatomic potentials for atomistic modelling of materials. Orb models are 3-6 times faster than existing universal potentials, stable under simulation for a range of out of distribution materials and, upon release, represented a 31% reduction in error over other methods on the Matbench Discovery benchmark. We explore several aspects of foundation model development for materials, with a focus on diffusion pretraining. We evaluate Orb as a model for geometry optimization, Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations.

The family of SU(2) theories with matter transforming in the adjoint representation has attracted interest from many angles. The two-flavour theory, known as Minimal Walking Technicolor, has a body of evidence pointing to it being in the conformal window with anomalous dimension $\gamma_{*}\approx0.3$. Perturbative calculations would suggest that the one-flavour theory should be confining and chirally broken; however, lattice studies of the theory have been inconclusive. In this contribution we present a first look at efforts towards the computation of the beta function of these theories using the gradient flow methodology. Following an exploration of the phase diagram of the two theories with Wilson fermions and additional Pauli-Villars fields, we tune the bare fermion mass to near the chiral limit, and subsequently generate ensembles at five lattice volumes and a range of lattice spacings., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Radially extended disk winds could be the key to unlocking how protoplanetary disks accrete and how planets form and migrate. A distinctive characteristic is their nested morphology of velocity and chemistry. Here we report JWST/NIRSpec spectro-imaging of four young stars with edge-on disks in the Taurus star-forming region that demonstrate the ubiquity of this structure. In each source, a fast collimated jet traced by [Fe II] is nested inside a hollow cavity within wider lower-velocity H2 and, in one case, also CO ro-vibrational (v=1-0) emission. Furthermore, in one of our sources, ALMA CO(2-1) emission, paired with our NIRSpec images, reveals the nested wind structure extends further outward. This nested wind morphology strongly supports theoretical predictions for wind-driven accretion and underscores the need for theoretical work to assess the role of winds in the formation and evolution of planetary systems, Comment: This preprint has not undergone peer review or any post-submission improvements or corrections. In this note, we present examples showing that several natural ways of constructing lattices from error-correcting codes do not in general yield a correspondence between minimum-weight non-zero codewords and shortest non-zero lattice vectors. From these examples, we conclude that the main results in two works of Vl\u{a}du\c{t} (Moscow J. Comb. Number Th., 2019 and Discrete Comput. Geom., 2021) on constructing lattices with exponential kissing number from error-correcting codes are invalid. Exhibiting a family of lattices with exponential kissing number therefore remains an open problem.

In the bottomonium sector, the hindered magnetic dipole (M1) transitions between P-wave states $h_b(2P) \rightarrow \chi_{bJ}(1P) \gamma$, $J=0, \, 1, \, 2$, are expected to be severely suppressed according to the Relativized Quark Model, due to the spin flip of the $b$ quark. Nevertheless, a recent model following the coupled-channel approach predicts the corresponding branching fractions to be enhanced by orders of magnitude. In this Letter, we report the first search for such transitions. We find no significant signals and set upper limits at 90% CL on the corresponding branching fractions: $\mathcal{B}[h_b(2P)\to\gamma\chi_{b0}(1P)] < 2.7 \times 10^{-1}$, $\mathcal{B}[h_b(2P)\to\gamma\chi_{b1}(1P)] < 5.4 \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}[h_b(2P)\to\gamma\chi_{b2}(1P)] < 1.3 \times 10^{-2}$. These values help to constrain the parameters of the coupled-channel models. The results are obtained using a $121.4 \, fb^{-1}$ data sample taken around $\sqrt{s}= 10.860 \, GeV$ with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Listeners of long-form talk-audio content, such as podcast episodes, often find it challenging to understand the overall structure and locate relevant sections. A practical solution is to divide episodes into chapters--semantically coherent segments labeled with titles and timestamps. Since most episodes on our platform at Spotify currently lack creator-provided chapters, automating the creation of chapters is essential. Scaling the chapterization of podcast episodes presents unique challenges. First, episodes tend to be less structured than written texts, featuring spontaneous discussions with nuanced transitions. Second, the transcripts are usually lengthy, averaging about 16,000 tokens, which necessitates efficient processing that can preserve context. To address these challenges, we introduce PODTILE, a fine-tuned encoder-decoder transformer to segment conversational data. The model simultaneously generates chapter transitions and titles for the input transcript. To preserve context, each input text is augmented with global context, including the episode's title, description, and previous chapter titles. In our intrinsic evaluation, PODTILE achieved an 11% improvement in ROUGE score over the strongest baseline. Additionally, we provide insights into the practical benefits of auto-generated chapters for listeners navigating episode content. Our findings indicate that auto-generated chapters serve as a useful tool for engaging with less popular podcasts. Motivation and autonomy are fundamental concepts in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), yet in User Experience (UX) research they have remained surprisingly peripheral. We draw on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to analyse autonomous and non-autonomous patterns of motivation in 497 interaction experiences. Using latent profile analysis, we identify 5 distinct patterns of motivation in technology use -- "motivational profiles" -- associated with significant differences in need satisfaction, affect, and usability. Users' descriptions of these experiences also reveal qualitative differences between profiles: from intentional, purposive engagement, to compulsive use which users themselves consider unhealthy. Our results complicate exclusively positive notions of intrinsic motivation, and clarify how extrinsic motivation can contribute to positive UX. Based on these findings we identify open questions for UX and SDT, addressing "hedonic amotivation" -- negative experiences in activities which are intrinsically motivated but not otherwise valued -- and "design for internalisation" -- scaffolding healthy and sustainable patterns of engagement over time.

We deploy the new Arkenstone galactic wind model in cosmological simulations for the first time, allowing us to robustly resolve the evolution and impact of high specific energy winds. In a (25$\,h^{-1}\,$Mpc)$^3$ box we perform a set of numerical experiments that systematically vary the mass and energy loadings of such winds, finding that their energy content is the key parameter controlling the stellar to dark matter mass ratio. Increasing the mass loading, at fixed energy, actually results in mildly enhanced star formation, counter to prevailing wisdom but in agreement with recent analytic models. Of the simple parametrisations that we test, we find that an energy loading that scales inversely with halo mass best matches a wide range of observations, and can do so with mass loadings drastically lower than those in most previous cosmological simulations. In this scenario, much less material is ejected from the interstellar medium. Instead, winds both heat gas in the circumgalactic medium, slowing infall onto the galaxy, and also drive shocks beyond the virial radius, preventing accretion onto the halo in the first place. We have not yet tied the mass and energy loadings to high-resolution simulations (a key goal of the Learning the Universe collaboration); however, we can already report that a much lower fraction of the available supernova energy is needed in preventative galaxy regulation than required by ejective wind feedback models such as IllustrisTNG., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 19 pages, 14 figures. We measure the masses of the pseudoscalar flavour-singlet meson states in the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory coupled to two Dirac fermions transforming in the fundamental representation and three Dirac fermions in the antisymmetric representation. This theory provides a compelling ultraviolet completion for the minimal composite Higgs model implementing also partial compositeness for the top quark. The spectrum contains two, comparatively light, pseudoscalar flavour-singlet states, which mix with one another. One of them is a Nambu-Goldstone boson (in the massless limit), whereas the other receives a mass from the $U(1)_A$ axial anomaly. We demonstrate how to measure the mixing between these two states. Spectral densities encode non-perturbative information crucial in computing physical observables in strongly coupled field theories. Using lattice gauge theory data, we perform a systematic study to demonstrate the potential of recent technological advances in the reconstruction of spectral densities. We develop, maintain and make publicly available dedicated analysis code that can be used for broad classes of lattice theories. As a test case, we analyse the Sp(4) gauge theory coupled to an admixture of fermions transforming in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. We measure the masses of mesons in energy-smeared spectral densities, after optimising the smearing parameters for available lattice ensembles. Which rocky exoplanets have atmospheres, and which do not? This presumably simply question is the first that must be answered in the pathway toward understanding the prevalence of nearby habitable planets. A mere 6.9 pc from Earth, the LTT 1445A system is the closest transiting M-dwarf system, and its largest known planet, at $\rm 1.31\; R_{\oplus}$ and 424 K, is one of the best rocky targets in which to search for an atmosphere. We use HST/WFC3 transmission spectroscopy with the G280 and G141 grisms to study the spectrum of LTT 1445Ab between $\rm 0.2-1.65\;\mu m$. In doing so, we uncover a flare on the neighboring star LTT 1445C, and report one of the first simultaneous near-UV/optical spectra of an M dwarf flare. The planet spectrum is consistent with a flat line, though the infrared portion displays potential features that could be explained by known opacity sources such as HCN. Some atmospheric retrievals weakly favor ($\sim2\sigma$) an atmosphere over a flat line, but it remains challenging to discern between stellar contamination, an atmosphere, and a featureless spectrum at this time. We do, however, confidently rule out $\leq100\times$ solar metallicity atmospheres. Although stellar contamination retrievals cannot fit the infrared features well, the overall spectrum is consistent with stellar contamination from hot spots, cold spots, or both. Based on the UV/optical data, we place limits on the extent of stellar variability expected in the near-infrared ($30-40$ ppm), which will be critical for upcoming JWST observations of this highly optimal target., Comment: In Review at AJ. We present an analysis of adaptive optics (AO) images from the Keck-I telescope of the microlensing event MOA-2011-BLG-262. The original discovery paper by Bennett et al. 2014 reports two distinct possibilities for the lens system; a nearby gas giant lens with an exomoon companion or a very low mass star with a planetary companion in the galactic bulge. The $\sim$10 year baseline between the microlensing event and the Keck follow-up observations allows us to detect the faint candidate lens host (star) at $K = 22.3$ mag and confirm the distant lens system interpretation. The combination of the host star brightness and light curve parameters yields host star and planet masses of $M_{\rm host} = 0.19 \pm 0.03M_{\odot}$ and $m_p = 28.92 \pm 4.75M_{\oplus}$ at a distance of $D_L = 7.49 \pm 0.91\,$kpc. We perform a multi-epoch cross reference to \textit{Gaia} DR3 and measure a transverse velocity for the candidate lens system of $v_L = 541.31 \pm 65.75$ km s$^{-1}$. We conclude this event consists of the highest velocity exoplanet system detected to date, and also the lowest mass microlensing host star with a confirmed mass measurement. The high-velocity nature of the lens system can be definitively confirmed with an additional epoch of high-resolution imaging at any time now. Cooperative optical effects are enabled and controlled by interactions between molecular dipoles, meaning that their mutual orientation is of paramount importance to, for example, superabsorbing light-harvesting antennas. Here we show how to move beyond the possibilities of simple geometric tailoring, demonstrating how a metallic sphere placed within a ring of parallel dipoles engineers an effective Hamiltonian that generates "guide-sliding" states within the ring system. This allows steady-state superabsorption in noisy room temperature environments, outperforming previous designs while being significantly simpler to implement. As exemplified by this showcase, our approach represents a powerful design paradigm for tailoring cooperative light-matter effects in molecular structures that extends beyond superabsorbing systems, to a huge array of quantum energy transport systems.

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ($CP$) decay-rate asymmetries in $B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0$ decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider in 2019-2022 and contains $(387\pm 6)\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs from $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays. We reconstruct $392\pm 24$ signal decays and fit the $CP$ parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two $B$ mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be $B(B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0)=(2.02 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$ and the direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries to be $C_{CP}=0.13 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.03$ and $S_{CP}=-0.88 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.03$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced $CP$ violation with a significance of $5.0$ standard deviations for the first time in this mode.

We consider the category of linear relations over an arbitrary commutative ring, and identify it as a subcategory of the category of Kronecker representations. We observe that this subcategory forms a definable torsion-free class in a canonical torsion pair whose torsion class consists of representations supported only at the tail vertex. In the complete local case we also generalise results used in the functorial filtrations method, known before only in case the ground ring is a field. In particular, our results strictly generalise what is usually called the `splitting lemma' linear relations. Automatic magnetic resonance (MR) image processing pipelines are widely used to study people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), encompassing tasks such as lesion segmentation and brain parcellation. However, the presence of lesion often complicates these analysis, particularly in brain parcellation. Lesion filling is commonly used to mitigate this issue, but existing lesion filling algorithms often fall short in accurately reconstructing realistic lesion-free images, which are vital for consistent downstream analysis. Additionally, the performance of lesion segmentation algorithms is often limited by insufficient data with lesion delineation as training labels. In this paper, we propose a novel approach leveraging Denoising Diffusion Implicit Models (DDIMs) for both MS lesion filling and synthesis based on image inpainting. Our modified DDIM architecture, once trained, enables both MS lesion filing and synthesis. Specifically, it can generate lesion-free T1-weighted or FLAIR images from those containing lesions; Or it can add lesions to T1-weighted or FLAIR images of healthy subjects. The former is essential for downstream analyses that require lesion-free images, while the latter is valuable for augmenting training datasets for lesion segmentation tasks. We validate our approach through initial experiments in this paper and demonstrate promising results in both lesion filling and synthesis, paving the way for future work.

The behavior of an atomic system is influenced by introducing a metallic surface. This work explores how the decay landscape can be altered by the presence of sharp corners. We examine two scenarios: the modified spontaneous decay of a single atom, which leads us to speculate about potential applications in microscopy, and the case of a more fundamental, theoretical interest - the behavior of an entangled pair of atoms near a corner. The latter, when two atoms are positioned ``out of the line of sight'' opens up a possible line of investigation into devices which are able to ``see around corners''.

Differentiating between generated and human-written content is important for navigating the modern world. Large language models (LLMs) are crucial drivers behind the increased quality of computer-generated content. Reportedly, humans find it increasingly difficult to identify whether an AI model generated a piece of text. Our work tests how two important factors contribute to the human vs AI race: empathy and an incentive to appear human. We address both aspects in two experiments: human participants and a state-of-the-art LLM wrote relationship advice (Study 1, n=530) or mere descriptions (Study 2, n=610), either instructed to be as human as possible or not. New samples of humans (n=428 and n=408) then judged the texts' source. Our findings show that when empathy is required, humans excel. Contrary to expectations, instructions to appear human were only effective for the LLM, so the human advantage diminished. Computational text analysis revealed that LLMs become more human because they may have an implicit representation of what makes a text human and effortlessly apply these heuristics. The model resorts to a conversational, self-referential, informal tone with a simpler vocabulary to mimic stochastic empathy. Significant advancements have been made in understanding the physics of transition-edge sensors (TESs) over the past decade. However, key questions remain, particularly a detailed understanding of the current-dependent resistance of these detectors when biased within their superconducting transition. We use scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy (SSM) to image the local diamagnetic response of aluminum-manganese alloy (Al-Mn) transition-edge sensors (TESs) near their critical temperature of approximately 175 mK. By doing so, we gain insights into how the device dimensions influence TES transition width, which in turn affects device operation and informs optimal device design. Our images reveal that the Al-Mn thin film near the niobium (Nb) leads exhibits an excess diamagnetic response at temperatures several milli-Kelvin (mK) higher than the bulk of the film farther from the contacts. A possible origin of this behavior is a longitudinal proximity effect between the Nb and Al-Mn where the TES acts as a weak link between superconducting leads. We discuss how this effect shapes the temperature dependence of the resistance as the spacing between the leads decreases. In this paper, we use Clifford algebra $Cl_{2,0}$ to find the 2D orbit of Hydrogen electron under a Coulomb force and a perturbing circularly polarized electric field of light at angular frequency~$\omega$, which is turned on at time $t = 0$ via a unit step switch. Using a coordinate system co-rotating with the electron's unperturbed circular orbit at angular frequency $\omega_0$, we derive the complex nonlinear differential equation for the perturbation which is similar to but different from the Lorentz oscillator equation: (1) the acceleration terms are similar, (2) the damping term coefficient is not real but imaginary due to Coriolis force, (3) the term similar to spring force is not positive but negative, (3) there is a complex conjugate of the perturbation term which has no Lorentz analog but which makes the equation nonlinear, and (4) the angular frequency of the forcing term is not $\omega$ but $\omega - \omega_0$. By imposing that the position and velocity of the electron are continuous at time $t = 0$, we show that the orbit of the electron is a sum of five exponential Fourier terms with frequencies 0, $\omega_0$, $2\omega_0$, $(2\omega_0 - \omega)$, and $\omega$, which correspond to the eccentric, deferent, and three epicycles in Copernican astronomy. We show that at the three resonant light frequencies $0$, $\omega_0$, and $2\omega_0$, the electron's orbit is divergent, but approximates a Keplerian ellipse. At other light frequencies, the orbits are nondivergent with periods that are integer multiples of $\pi/\omega_0$ depending on the frequency ratio $\omega/\omega_0$. We study the finite-temperature behaviour of the $Sp(4)$ Yang-Mills lattice theory in four dimensions, by applying the Logarithmic Linear Relaxation (LLR) algorithm. We demonstrate the presence of coexisting (metastable) phases, when the system is in the proximity of the transition. We measure observables such as the free energy, the expectation value of the plaquette operator and of the Polyakov loop, as well as the specific heat, and the Binder cumulant. We use these results to obtain a high-precision measurement of the critical coupling at the confinement-deconfinement transition, and assess its systematic uncertainty, for one value of the lattice extent in the time direction. Furthermore, we perform an extensive study of the finite-volume behaviour of the lattice system, by repeating the measurements for fixed lattice time extent, while increasing the spatial size of the lattice. We hence characterise the first-order transition on the lattice, and present the first results in the literature on this theory for the infinite volume extrapolation of lattice quantities related to latent heat and interface tension. Gauge theories with $Sp(4)$ group have been proposed as new dark sectors to provide a fundamental origin for the current phenomenological evidence of dark matter. A phase transition at high temperature, in such a new dark sector, occurring in the early universe, might have left a relic stochastic background of gravitational waves. Our results represent a milestone toward establishing whether such a new physics signal is detectable in future experiments, as they enter the calculation of the parameters, $\alpha$ and $\beta$, controlling the power spectrum of gravitational waves. Edge devices are being deployed at increasing volumes to sense and act on information from the physical world. The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is often necessary to make this sensed data suitable for further processing $\unicode{x2013}$ such as by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms $\unicode{x2013}$ and for transmission over communication networks. Analog in-memory computing has been shown to be a fast and energy-efficient solution for processing edge AI workloads, but not for Fourier transforms. This is because of the existence of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, which enormously reduces the complexity of the DFT but has so far belonged only to digital processors. Here, we show that the FFT can be mapped to analog in-memory computing systems, enabling them to efficiently scale to arbitrarily large Fourier transforms without requiring large sizes or large numbers of non-volatile memory arrays. We experimentally demonstrate analog FFTs on 1D audio and 2D image signals, using a large-scale charge-trapping memory array with precisely tunable, low-conductance analog states. The scalability of both the new analog FFT approach and the charge-trapping memory device is leveraged to compute a 65,536-point analog DFT, a scale that is otherwise inaccessible by analog systems and which is $>$1000$\times$ larger than any previous analog DFT demonstration. The analog FFT also provides more numerically precise DFTs with greater tolerance to device and circuit non-idealities than a direct matrix-vector multiplication approach. We show that the extension of the FFT algorithm to analog in-memory processors leads to design considerations that differ markedly from digital implementations, and that analog Fourier transforms have a substantial power efficiency advantage at all size scales over FFTs implemented on state-of-the-art digital hardware.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising for low-power complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) electronics, which require ultrathin n- and p-type transistor channels. Among 2D semiconductors, WS2 is expected to have good conduction for both electrons and holes, but p-type WS2 transistors have been difficult to realize due to the relatively deep valence band and the presence of mid-gap states with conventional metal contacts. Here, we report topological semimetal NbP as p-type electrical contacts to bilayer WS2 with up to 5.8 microamperes per micron hole current at room temperature; this is the highest to date for sub 2 nm thin WS2 and more than 50 times larger than with metals like Ni or Pd. The p-type conduction is enabled by the simultaneously high work function and low density of states of the NbP, which reduce Fermi level pinning. These contacts are sputter-deposited at room temperature, an approach compatible with CMOS fabrication, a step towards enabling ultrathin WS2 semiconductors in future nanoelectronics.

In-basket message interactions play a crucial role in physician-patient communication, occurring during all phases (pre-, during, and post) of a patient's care journey. However, responding to these patients' inquiries has become a significant burden on healthcare workflows, consuming considerable time for clinical care teams. To address this, we introduce RadOnc-GPT, a specialized Large Language Model (LLM) powered by GPT-4 that has been designed with a focus on radiotherapeutic treatment of prostate cancer with advanced prompt engineering, and specifically designed to assist in generating responses. We integrated RadOnc-GPT with patient electronic health records (EHR) from both the hospital-wide EHR database and an internal, radiation-oncology-specific database. RadOnc-GPT was evaluated on 158 previously recorded in-basket message interactions. Quantitative natural language processing (NLP) analysis and two grading studies with clinicians and nurses were used to assess RadOnc-GPT's responses. Our findings indicate that RadOnc-GPT slightly outperformed the clinical care team in "Clarity" and "Empathy," while achieving comparable scores in "Completeness" and "Correctness." RadOnc-GPT is estimated to save 5.2 minutes per message for nurses and 2.4 minutes for clinicians, from reading the inquiry to sending the response. Employing RadOnc-GPT for in-basket message draft generation has the potential to alleviate the workload of clinical care teams and reduce healthcare costs by producing high-quality, timely responses.

Purpose: Diffusion weighted MRI (dMRI) and its models of neural structure provide insight into human brain organization and variations in white matter. A recent study by McMaster, et al. showed that complex graph measures of the connectome, the graphical representation of a tractogram, vary with spatial sampling changes, but biases introduced by anisotropic voxels in the process have not been well characterized. This study uses microstructural measures (fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity) and white matter bundle properties (bundle volume, length, and surface area) to further understand the effect of anisotropic voxels on microstructure and tractography. Methods: The statistical significance of the selected measures derived from dMRI data were assessed by comparing three white matter bundles at different spatial resolutions with 44 subjects from the Human Connectome Project Young Adult dataset scan/rescan data using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. The original isotropic resolution (1.25 mm isotropic) was explored with six anisotropic resolutions with 0.25 mm incremental steps in the z dimension. Then, all generated resolutions were upsampled to 1.25 mm isotropic and 1 mm isotropic. Results: There were statistically significant differences between at least one microstructural and one bundle measure at every resolution (p less than or equal to 0.05, corrected for multiple comparisons). Cohen's d coefficient evaluated the effect size of anisotropic voxels on microstructure and tractography. Conclusion: Fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity cannot be recovered with basic up sampling from low quality data with gold standard data. However, the bundle measures from tractogram become more repeatable when voxels are resampled to 1 mm isotropic.

Finite State Machines are a concept widely taught in undergraduate theory of computing courses. Educators typically use tools with static representations of FSMs to help students visualize these objects and processes; however, all existing tools require manual editing by the instructor. In this poster, we created an automatic visualization tool for FSMs that generates videos of FSM simulation, named Finite State Machine with Input and Process Render (FSMIPR). Educators can input any formal definition of an FSM and an input string, and FSMIPR generates an accompanying video of its simulation. We believe that FSMIPR will be beneficial to students who learn difficult computer theory concepts. This paper classifies all Higgs branch Higgsing patterns for simply-laced unitary quiver gauge theories with eight supercharges (including multiple loops) and introduces a Higgs branch subtraction algorithm. All possible minimal transitions are given, identifying differences between slices that emerge on the Higgs and Coulomb branches. In particular, the algorithm is sensitive to global information including monodromies and Namikawa-Weyl groups. Guided by symplectic duality, the algorithm further determines the global symmetry on the Coulomb branch, and verifies the exclusion of $C$ type or $F_4$ global symmetry for (simply-laced) unitary quiver gauge theories. The Higgs branches of some unitary quivers are verified to give slices in the nilpotent cones of exceptional simple Lie algebras.

We perform the first search for $C\!P$ violation in ${D_{(s)}^{+}\to{}K_{S}^{0}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}}$ decays. We use a combined data set from the Belle and Belle II experiments, which study $e^+e^-$ collisions at center-of-mass energies at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. We use 980 fb$^{-1}$ of data from Belle and 428 fb$^{-1}$ of data from Belle~II. We measure six $C\!P$-violating asymmetries that are based on triple products and quadruple products of the momenta of final-state particles, and also the particles' helicity angles. We obtain a precision at the level of 0.5% for $D^+\to{}K_{S}^{0}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ decays, and better than 0.3% for $D^+_{s}\to{}K_{S}^{0}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ decays. No evidence of $C\!P$ violation is found. Our results for the triple-product asymmetries are the most precise to date for singly-Cabibbo-suppressed $D^+$ decays. The technique of orthosymplectic quotient quiver subtraction is introduced. This involves subtraction of an orthosymplectic quotient quiver from a $3d\;\mathcal N=4$ orthosymplectic quiver gauge theory which has the effect of gauging subgroups of the IR Coulomb branch global symmetry. Orthosymplectic quotient quivers for $\mathrm{SU}(2),\;\mathrm{SU}(3),\;G_2,$ and $\mathrm{SO}(7)$ are found and derived from Type IIA brane systems involving negatively charged branes for certain $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)$ gauge theories. Orthosymplectic quotient quiver subtraction is applied to magnetic quivers for nilpotent orbit closures providing new orthosymplectic counterparts to known unitary quivers. New Coulomb branch constructions are found such as for two height four nilpotent orbit closures of $F_4$ and one of height three. A novel application is to find magnetic quivers and Type IIA brane systems for the $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)$ worldvolume theory of two $\frac{1}{2}$M5 branes probing $E_6$ Klein singularity and for $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)\;(E_6,E_6)$ conformal matter. These give a perturbative Lagrangian realisation to the dynamics of strongly interacting M5 branes. The magnetic quiver for $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)\;(E_6,E_6)$ conformal matter is star-shaped and can also be interpreted as a magnetic quiver for a class $\mathcal S$ theory specified by $\mathrm{SO}(26)$ algebra on a three-punctured sphere., Comment: Typos corrected in brane systems shown in Fig 20 and Fig 22

We tackle the hard problem of consciousness taking the naturally-selected, self-organising, embodied organism as our starting point. We provide a mathematical formalism describing how biological systems self-organise to hierarchically interpret unlabelled sensory information according to valence and specific needs. Such interpretations imply behavioural policies which can only be differentiated from each other by the qualitative aspect of information processing. Selection pressures favour systems that can intervene in the world to achieve homeostatic and reproductive goals. Quality is a property arising in such systems to link cause to affect to motivate real world interventions. This produces a range of qualitative classifiers (interoceptive and exteroceptive) that motivate specific actions and determine priorities and preferences. Building upon the seminal distinction between access and phenomenal consciousness, our radical claim here is that phenomenal consciousness without access consciousness is likely very common, but the reverse is implausible. To put it provocatively: Nature does not like zombies. We formally describe the multilayered architecture of self-organisation from rocks to Einstein, illustrating how our argument applies in the real world. We claim that access consciousness at the human level is impossible without the ability to hierarchically model i) the self, ii) the world/others and iii) the self as modelled by others. Phenomenal consciousness is therefore required for human-level functionality. Our proposal lays the foundations of a formal science of consciousness, deeply connected with natural selection rather than abstract thinking, closer to human fact than zombie fiction.

An incomplete field-of-view (FOV) in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) can severely hinder the volumetric and bundle analyses of whole-brain white matter connectivity. Although existing works have investigated imputing the missing regions using deep generative models, it remains unclear how to specifically utilize additional information from paired multi-modality data and whether this can enhance the imputation quality and be useful for downstream tractography. To fill this gap, we propose a novel framework for imputing dMRI scans in the incomplete part of the FOV by integrating the learned diffusion features in the acquired part of the FOV to the complete brain anatomical structure. We hypothesize that by this design the proposed framework can enhance the imputation performance of the dMRI scans and therefore be useful for repairing whole-brain tractography in corrupted dMRI scans with incomplete FOV. We tested our framework on two cohorts from different sites with a total of 96 subjects and compared it with a baseline imputation method that treats the information from T1w and dMRI scans equally. The proposed framework achieved significant improvements in imputation performance, as demonstrated by angular correlation coefficient (p < 1E-5), and in downstream tractography accuracy, as demonstrated by Dice score (p < 0.01). Results suggest that the proposed framework improved imputation performance in dMRI scans by specifically utilizing additional information from paired multi-modality data, compared with the baseline method. The imputation achieved by the proposed framework enhances whole brain tractography, and therefore reduces the uncertainty when analyzing bundles associated with neurodegenerative., Comment: 20 pages; 8 figures

We introduce a method for removing CMB and anomalous microwave emission (AME, or spinning dust) intensity signals at high to intermediate Galactic latitudes in temperature sky maps at frequencies roughly between 5 and 40 GHz. The method relies on the assumption of a spatially uniform combined dust (AME and thermal) rms spectral energy distribution for these regions, but is otherwise model independent. A difference map is produced from input maps at two different frequencies in thermodynamic temperature: the two frequencies are chosen such that the rms AME signal in the lower frequency (~5 - 40 GHz) map is equivalent to the thermal dust emission rms in the higher frequency (~95 - 230 GHz) map. Given the high spatial correlation between AME and thermal dust, the resulting difference map is dominated by synchrotron and free-free foreground components, and can thus provide useful insight into the morphology and possible spectral variations of these components at high latitudes. We show examples of these difference maps obtained with currently available WMAP and Planck data and demonstrate the efficacy of CMB and dust mitigation using this method. We also use these maps, in conjunction with Haslam 408 MHz and WHAM H-alpha observations, to form an estimate of the diffuse synchrotron spectral index in temperature on degree scales. While typical qualitative T1-weighted magnetic resonance images reflect scanner and protocol differences, quantitative T1 mapping aims to measure T1 independent of these effects. Changes in T1 in the brain reflect chemical and physical changes in brain tissue, such as the demyelination of axons in multiple sclerosis. Magnetization-prepared two rapid acquisition gradient echo (MP2RAGE) is an acquisition protocol that allows for efficient T1 mapping with a much lower scan time per slice compared to multi-TI inversion recovery (IR) protocols. We collect and register B1-corrected MP2RAGE acquisitions with an additional inversion time (MP3RAGE) alongside multi-TI selective inversion recovery acquisitions for four subjects and find a tissue-dependent bias between the derived T1 values. We train a patch-based ResNet-18 to calibrate the MP3RAGE T1 values to the multi-TI IR T1 values, incorporating the standard deviation of T1 calculated from a Monte Carlo simulation as an additional channel. Across four folds, the error between the MP2RAGE and T1 maps varies substantially (RMSE in white matter: 0.30 +/- 0.01 seconds, subcortical gray matter: 0.26 +/- 0.02 seconds, cortical gray matter: 0.36 +/- 0.02 seconds). Our network reduces the RMSE significantly (RMSE in white matter: 0.11 +/- 0.02 seconds, subcortical gray matter: 0.10 +/- 0.02 seconds, cortical gray matter: 0.17 +/- 0.03 seconds). Adding the standard deviation channel does not substantially change the RMSE. Using limited paired training data from both sequences, we can reduce the error between quantitative imaging methods and calibrate to one of the protocols with a neural network., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. The understanding of the formation and evolution of the solar system still has many unanswered questions. Formation of solids in the solar system, mineral and organic mixing, and planetary body creation are all topics of interest to the community. Studying these phenomena is often performed through observations, remote sensing, and in-situ analysis, but there are limitations to the methods. Limitations such as IR diffraction limits, spatial resolution issues, and spectral resolution issues can prevent detection of organics, detection and identification of cellular structures, and the disentangling of granular mixtures. Optical-PhotoThermal InfraRed (O-PTIR) spectroscopy is a relatively new method of spectroscopy currently used in fields other than planetary sciences. O-PTIR is a non-destructive, highly repeatable, and fast form of measurement capable of reducing these limitations. Using a dual laser system with an IR source tuned to the mid-IR wavelength we performed laboratory O-PTIR measurements to compare O-PTIR data to existing IR absorption data and laboratory FTIR measurements for planetary materials. We do this for the purpose of introducing O-PTIR to the planetary science community. The technique featured here would serve to better measurements of planetary bodies during in-situ analysis. We find that, unlike other fields where O-PTIR produces almost one-to-one measurements with IR absorption measurements of the same material, granular materials relevant to planetary science do not. We present OpenDosimeter (https://opendosimeter.org/), an open hardware solution for real-time personal X-ray dose monitoring based on a scintillation counter. Using an X-ray sensor assembly (LYSO + SiPM) on a custom board powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico, OpenDosimeter provides real-time feedback (1 Hz), data logging (10 hours), and battery-powered operation. One of the core innovations is that we calibrate the device using $^{241}$Am found in ionization smoke detectors. Specifically, we use the $\gamma$-emissions to spectrally calibrate the dosimeter, then calculate the effective dose from X-ray exposure by compensating for the scintillator absorption efficiency and applying energy-to-dose coefficients derived from tabulated data in the ICRP 116 publication. We demonstrate that this transparent approach enables real-time dose rate readings with a linear response between 0.1-1000 $\mu$Sv/h at $\pm$25% accuracy, tested for energies up to 120 keV. The maximum dose rate readings are limited by pile-up effects when approaching count rate saturation ($\sim$77 kcps at $\sim$13 $\mu$s average pulse processing time). The total component cost for making an OpenDosimeter is <\$100, which, combined with its open design (both hardware and software), enables cost-effective local reproducibility on a global scale. Large language models (LLMs) increasingly reach real-world applications, necessitating a better understanding of their behaviour. Their size and complexity complicate traditional assessment methods, causing the emergence of alternative approaches inspired by the field of psychology. Recent studies administering psychometric questionnaires to LLMs report human-like traits in LLMs, potentially influencing LLM behaviour. However, this approach suffers from a validity problem: it presupposes that these traits exist in LLMs and that they are measurable with tools designed for humans. Typical procedures rarely acknowledge the validity problem in LLMs, comparing and interpreting average LLM scores. This study investigates this problem by comparing latent structures of personality between humans and three LLMs using two validated personality questionnaires. Findings suggest that questionnaires designed for humans do not validly measure similar constructs in LLMs, and that these constructs may not exist in LLMs at all, highlighting the need for psychometric analyses of LLM responses to avoid chasing cognitive phantoms. The discovery of an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) sensitive to the magnetic state of antiferromagnets can trigger a new era of spintronics, if materials that host a tunable and strong AHE are identified. Altermagnets are a new class of materials that can under certain conditions manifest a strong AHE, without having a net magnetization. But the ability to control their AHE is still lacking. In this study, we demonstrate that the AHE in altermagnetic {\alpha}-MnTe grown on GaAs(111) substrates can be "written on-demand" by cooling the material under an in-plane magnetic field. The magnetic field controls the strength and the coercivity of the AHE. Remarkably, this control is unique to {\alpha}-MnTe grown on GaAs and is absent in {\alpha}-MnTe grown on SrF2. The tunability that we reveal challenges our current understanding of the symmetry-allowed AHE in this material and opens new possibilities for the design of altermagnetic spintronic devices.

Multimodal fusion promises better pancreas segmentation. However, where to perform fusion in models is still an open question. It is unclear if there is a best location to fuse information when analyzing pairs of imperfectly aligned images. Two main alignment challenges in this pancreas segmentation study are 1) the pancreas is deformable and 2) breathing deforms the abdomen. Even after image registration, relevant deformations are often not corrected. We examine how early through late fusion impacts pancreas segmentation. We used 353 pairs of T2-weighted (T2w) and T1-weighted (T1w) abdominal MR images from 163 subjects with accompanying pancreas labels. We used image registration (deeds) to align the image pairs. We trained a collection of basic UNets with different fusion points, spanning from early to late, to assess how early through late fusion influenced segmentation performance on imperfectly aligned images. We assessed generalization of fusion points on nnUNet. The single-modality T2w baseline using a basic UNet model had a Dice score of 0.73, while the same baseline on the nnUNet model achieved 0.80. For the basic UNet, the best fusion approach occurred in the middle of the encoder (early/mid fusion), which led to a statistically significant improvement of 0.0125 on Dice score compared to the baseline.
