Northern pike (Esox lucius L.) is one of the fish species whose production in freshwater aquaculture may increase in the next few years. One method of producing this species is to create monosex stocks of pike, as females grow faster, mature later and gain larger body sizes. They can be obtained in the process of gynogenesis. The aim of this research was to determine and optimize the conditions of UV irradiating European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) spermatozoa to inactivate them genetically (first experiment). The aim of this study was also to confirm whether perch spermatozoa can be used to induce northern pike gynogenesis using thermal shock (second experiment). During first experiment the highest rate of haploid larvae (29.9 ± 0.85%) was noted in the group inseminated with perch sperm irradiated for 6 min (1548 J m-2). No viable embryos were observed in groups of eggs inseminated with sperm irradiated for more than 10 minutes (2580 J m-2). The heat shock applied 12 or 14 min after gamete activation, for 3 or 5 min at 34.0°C, resulted in obtaining of gynogenetic specimen due to retention of the second polar body in all experimental groups. The most efficient was heat shock applied 14 min after gamete activation and lasting 3 min, and resulted in 18.5 ± 1.3% of gynogenetic larvae for female B. Heat shock applied 12 min after gamete activation, lasting 3 min was also effective in the case of female A, resulting in obtaining of 16.5 ± 2.1% gynogenetic specimen.

More than 40 species of lampreys (Petromyzontiformes) are known worldwide. Some of them are parasitic and feed on the blood of fish or other aquatic animals. Lampreys spawn once in their lifetime, after which they die. One of the representatives of the ichthyofauna of European rivers is the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis. The river lamprey is now an endangered species due to loss and degradation of their habitats. The present study investigated gonadal development without hormonal stimulation in female river lampreys during puberty under controlled conditions for a period of seven months. Female river lampreys were kept in conditions that mimicked the natural environment. During the November–May period, samples were taken monthly to determine the extent of gonadal development and gastrointestinal and liver changes using histological examination. From the results obtained, the dynamical changes were determined for the following: gonadosomatic index (GSI; %), hepatosomatic index (his; %), and digestivesomatic index (DSI; %). With the gonadal development of female lampreys, an increase in GSI (7–23%; November–May) and a decrease in DSI (0.4–0.1%; November–May) histological changes were observed in the gonads (oocyte development), intestines (over time, decreased lipid vacuoles and enterocyte apoptosis), and in the liver (decreased lipid vacuoles and hepatocyte apoptosis over time) and in the digestive system resulting from its degradation. Also, it was observed that there was a change in the color of the liver to green in April. This study demonstrated the key role of the liver in the oocyte maturation process in this species.

The purpose of the presented investigations is to design, construct and establish the characteristic performance of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Mammography(J-PEM), being designed for the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Its construction is based on a novel idea of PET tomography based on plastic scintillators and wavelength shifter (WLS) and a new concept of positronium imaging. We have prepared a simulation program based on Monte Carlo methods for optimizing the geometry and material of the J-PEM prototype. Here we present the first results from the simulations and a brief review of the state of art of breast imaging modalities and their characteristics motivating our investigation.

The aim of the study was to find out about the education in Polish schools of young people from Ukraine, who began to study there in connection with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022. The research focuses on the educational processes themselves, both in terms of teaching, care and upbringing, as well as the broader conditions of these processes in the pedagogical, psychological and social perspective (as well as in the formal and legal context). The main research questions are as follows: 1. What are the previous experiences of schools and teachers in working with foreign children (including children from Ukraine)? What preparation of schools and teachers undertaken to admit children who came to Poland as a result of the outbreak of the war? 2. How is the process of educating children from Ukraine who came as a result of the war organized at the local level and at the level of specific schools? 3. How, in the opinion of teachers, are the relations between children who previously studied in Polish schools and children who came as a result of the war shaped? 4. How, in the opinion of teachers, is the mental functioning of children who came as a result of the outbreak? 5. What, in the opinion of teachers, are the relations between the families of students who came because of the war, and the families of children who previously studied in Polish schools like? 6. How, in the opinion of teachers, is the cooperation between schools and the families of children who came from Ukraine in connection with the outbreak of the war? 7. What aspects of educational work with children who came as a result of the outbreak of the war are difficult for teachers in Polish schools? The findings are interpreted in the context of describing the needs of Polish schools and teachers so that the educational process of young people with refugee experience from Ukraine is maximized and constitutes effective support for them in a crisis situation. The recommendations developed by the authors of the Report and a team of invited experts are both more general in nature, related to the philosophy, assumptions and principles of the support provided, and relate to specific substantive aspects of support that can be implemented in schools.

8. Assessing Human Risks and Benefits Associated with Mercury Contamination Versus Fatty Acids and Lipid Quality Indices in Anguilla anguilla L., Perca fluviatilis L. and Rutilus rutilus L. from the Olsztyn Lake District, Poland.

The concentration of mercury, fatty acids and lipid quality indices were determined in three species of fish (European eel, Anguilla anguilla Linnaeus, 1758; Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1758; and roach, Rutilus rutilus Linnaeus, 1758). The fish were caught from a reservoir in the Warmia and Mazury region located near Olsztyn (north-eastern Poland). Mercury content was determined by atomic absorption thermal decomposition using Milestone DMA-80 (Italy), whereas fatty acids were measured by gas chromatography using a 7890A Agilent Technologies chromatograph. The total mercury concentration had the following sequence: European perch (0.297 mg/kg) > European eel (0.160 mg/kg) ≈ roach (0.100 mg/kg) (P<0.05). A positive correlation was found between the mercury content and size (the body weight and total length) of these fish (P<0.0001). Based on the THQ, HI (<1.0) and BRQ (1.063), it was concluded that the fish does not pose a health risk and is fit for human consumption. Similarly, low AI and TI values (<1) are beneficial to human health related to reducing the risk of ischemic heart disease. A low OFA index of C12+C14+C18 and a high index of C18+UFA also indicate that these fish are safe from a nutritional point of view. The fatty acid indices HH (32.10–74.30), NVI (0.83–2.14), DI(18) (65.50–89.28), DI(16) (18.45–32.96), UI (131.93–278.64) and PI (88.60–314.90) were also studied. However, higher PUFA/SFA and de minimis EPA+DHA/Hg ratios compared to the recommended ratios suggest further research in this area is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Comparative Analysis of Diagnostic Performance of Automatic Breast Ultrasound, Full-Field Digital Mammography and Contrast-Enhanced Mammography in Relation to Breast Composition

This single center study includes a comparative analysis of the diagnostic performance of full-field digital mammography (FFDM), contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and automatic breast ultrasound (ABUS) in the group of patients with breast American College of Radiology (ACR) categories C and D as well as A and B with FFDM. The study involved 297 patients who underwent ABUS and FFDM. Breast types C and D were determined in 40% of patients with FFDM and low- energy CEM. CEM was performed on 76 patients. Focal lesions were found in 131 patients, of which 115 were histopathologically verified. The number of lesions detected in patients with multiple lesions were 40 from 48 with ABUS, 13 with FFDM and 21 with CEM. Compliance in determining the number of foci was 82% for FFDM and 91% for both CEM and ABUS. In breast types C and D, 72% of all lesions were found with ABUS, 56% with CEM and 29% with FFDM (p = 0.008, p = 0.000); all invasive cancers were diagnosed with ABUS, 83% with CEM and 59% with FFDM (p = 0.000, p = 0.023); 100% DCIS were diagnosed with ABUS, 93% with CEM and 59% with FFDM. The size of lesions from histopathology in breast ACR categories A and B was 14–26 mm, while in breast categories C and D was 11–37 mm. In breast categories C and D, sensitivity of ABUS, FFDM and CEM was, respectively, 78.05, 85.37, 92.68; specificity: 40, 13.33, 8.33; PPV (positive predictive value): 78.05, 72.92, 77.55; NPV (negative predictive value): 40, 25, 25, accuracy: 67.86, 66.07, 73.58. In breast categories A and B, sensitivity of ABUS, FFDM and CEM was, respectively, 81.25, 93.75, 93.48; specificity: 18.18, 18.18, 16.67; PPV: 81.25, 83.33, 89.58; NPV: 18.18, 40, 25; accuracy: 69.49, 79.66, 84.62. The sensitivity of the combination of FFDM and ABUS was 100 for all types of breast categories; the accuracy was 75 in breast types C and D and 81.36 in breast types A and B. The study confirms the predominance of C and D breast anatomy types and the low diagnostic performance of FFDM within that group and indicates ABUS and CEM as potential additive methods in breast cancer diagnostics.

Breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in women, is a major problem both in Poland and worldwide. Mammography remains the primary screening method. However, the sensitivity of mammographic screening is lower in women with dense glandular breasts due to tissue overlap and the effect of the glandular tissue obscuring the tumor and the fact that tumors and glandular tissue show similar X-ray absorption. Consequently, other methods are being sought to increase breast cancer detection rates. Currently, the most common and used methods are ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging and advanced mammographic methods (digital breast tomosynthesis and contrast-enhanced spectral mammography). Despite many advantages and superiority over mammography in dense breasts, they also have many disadvantages. Ultrasound is operator-dependent and the other techniques are expensive or not widely available. The Automated Breast Ultrasound Service (ABUS) technique appears to be a good option in terms of both effectiveness and lower cost.

11. Romantic fantasy and the grotesque in John Keats’s 'Lamia'

The present article examines the notions of fantasy, illusion and logic in Keats’s romance Lamia (1819) from the perspective of the aesthetic and literary category of the grotesque. In his text Keats puts the grotesque to two uses. First, it serves to mark his ambiguous attitude to both reason and imagination as two exclusive modes of cognition; secondly, it records his uneasiness in relation to the romantic ideal of love. Two conflicting points of view inform and battle in the poem: one might be called Romantic, as it endorses imagination and beauty as values per se; the other invites an interrogation of the idealistic approach. Neither of these two perspectives is unequivocally applauded in the text, and the Romantic grotesque appears a perfect vehicle for expressing this incongruity.

The publishing house in Braniewo operated in the years 1589 - 1773. Its activity can be divided into two periods. The first is that it is operated and conducted by six private typographers: Jan Saxo, Jerzy Schönfels, Kacper Weingärtner, Piotr Freimuth, Piotr Schultz and Piotr Rosenbüchler. The second period is the years 1697 - 1773, when the publishing house was managed by the Society of Jesus. The collection of the Library of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn includes 64 old prints issued by this typography. The author analyzed 20 of them. A chronological key was used in the description. The selection was made additionally due to provenance marks on the volumes. Selected examples of old prints reflect the publishing character of the publishing house. The prints from the museum collection complement the prints from Braniewo kept in other libraries, including in the Library of the Higher Theological Seminary of the Warmia Metropolitan Area "Hosianum" in Olsztyn and the University Library in Uppsala.

Simple Summary: Lampreys are a group of about 40 species found all over the world. One representative of this group is the river lamprey, which spends its larvae life initially in fresh water and then in the sea. For spawning, which is the end of their last migration, they return to fresh water. The spawning migration period lasts many months, during which the lampreys do not eat and many changes occur in their bodies. However, knowledge of these processes and their dynamics has not been studied and described, and this is the basis for preparing programs for the restitution of lampreys and their artificial reproduction under controlled conditions. This paper describes the changes occurring during spawning migration in female river lampreys, including the development of ovaries, changes in the liver, and atrophy of the digestive system. BackgroundThe aim of this study is to compare depression and loneliness among adult siblings of people on the autism spectrum, adult siblings of normotypic individuals, and adults raised alone (only child). In recent years, an increasing interest in the perspective of siblings of children diagnosed with autism has been observed, with studies among this population particularly concerned with the developmental trajectories of children and adolescents at “high risk” for ASD, rarely focusing on their mental well-being.MethodsThe respondents filled out: the survey on sociodemographic data designed by the authors, Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI, measure of depression), and De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS, assessment of loneliness).ResultsA rise in BDI and an increase in the DJGLS score were predicted by having a sibling diagnosed with ASD. Those effects were independent of subjects’ sex, educational status, place of residence, or a number of siblings.ConclusionThe results underline a fundamental need for the development of mental hygiene programs for families where children with autism spectrum are accompanied by healthy siblings.

16. Fatty acids profile, conjugated linoleic acid contents and fat quality in selected dairy products available on the Polish market

The fatty acid composition, cis-9,trans-11 C18:2 (CLA) content and lipid quality indices in the fat of some dairy products (pasteurised milk, UHT milk, natural yoghurts, bio-yoghurts, yoghurts with fruit and cereal grains, butters and hard cheeses) available on the Polish market were determined. The conducted study demonstrated that the fat extracted from the analysed dairy products was characterised by various contents of fatty acids and various lipid quality indices. In the fat extracted from all the analysed products, saturated fatty acids (SFA) were dominant. The fat from the yoghurts with the fruit and cereal grains was characterised by the highest content of PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids), the highest hypocholesterolaemic/hypercholesterolaemic ratio (H/H) and the lowest value of the index of atherogenicity (AI) and the index of thrombogenicity (TI). The fat from the natural yoghurts contained the highest value of MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids). The fat from the bio-yoghurts (7.62 mg g-1) had the highest mean content of CLA. In the other analysed products, the mean content of the CLA was significantly lower (P < 0.05), but the fat from the UHT milks (3.32 mg g-1 fat) had the lowest content.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-invasive form of breast cancer that is generally indolent, however, could advance to invasive carcinoma in more than one-third of cases if left untreated. Thus, there is continuous research to find DCIS characteristics that would enable clinicians to decide if it could be left without intensive treatment. Neoductgenesis (i.e., formation of the new duct of improper morphology) is a promising, but still not sufficiently evaluated indicator of future tumor invasiveness. We gathered data from 96 cases of DCIS (histopathological, clinical, and radiological) to assess the relationship between the neoductgenesis and well-established features of high-risk tumor behavior. Furthermore, our intention was to determine which degree of neoductgenesis should be considered clinically significant. Our major finding was that neoductgenesis is strictly related to other characteristics that indicate the invasive potential of the tumor and, to achieve more accurate prediction, neoductgenesis should be accordingly recognized to less strict criteria. Therefore, we conclude that neoductgenesis is another important revelator of tumor malignancy and that it requires further investigation during prospective controlled trials.

22. Health-promoting value of cow, sheep and goat milk and yogurts

The purpose of the presented study was to determine the fatty acid composition, health lipid indices content and selected micro and macronutrients in cow, sheep and goat milk and yogurts produced there of. Fatty acid composition was determined by the GC-FID method using a 100-m capillary column with CP Sil 88 phase. Microelements (iron, zinc, copper and manganese) and macroelements (magnesium and calcium) were analysed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, whereas sodium and potassium were determined by the emission method. Phosphorus was analysed by the colorimetric method. The conducted study demonstrated that sheep, cow and goat milks and yogurts were characterized by different contents of fatty acids, micro- and macroelements. Sheep milk and yogurts could be regarded as richer sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), (4.41 and 4.35 % of total fatty acids, respectively), n-3 fatty acids (1.05 % of total fatty acids). These samples also had lower n6/n3 ratio (1.93 and 1.92, respectively) and the lowest value index of Thrombogenicity (TI) in comparison to the other analyzed milk and yogurt samples. In turn, goat milk and yogurts were characterized by the highest content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), (18.07 and 18.17 % of total fatty acids, respectively) the lowest content of saturated fatty acids (SFA), (54.62 and 54.93 %, respectively) and the lowest value index of Atherogenicity (AI) (2.79 and 2.84, respectively). 23. Effect of Application of Different Activation Media on Fertilization and Embryo Survival of Northern Pike, (Esox lucius) under Hatchery Conditions

One of the finfish species that European and North American breeders are most interested in is the northern pike, Esox lucius. Artificial reproduction and the production of viable larvae has a huge impact on further culture. The quality of stripped gametes is highly variable. Therefore, it is important to use gametes with maximum efficiency, which has a direct impact on the amount of stocking material produced and therefore on the economics of production. The aim of this study was to compare northern pike fertilization efficiency, expressed as the survival rate of embryos until hatching. In the first experiment, the highest percentage of hatched embryos was observed in groups of eggs fertilized in a saline diluent prepared with deionized water (after reverse osmosis: group D), at 61.2% and 56.5% in the NaCl5-D and NaCl6-D groups, respectively. The highest percentage of hatched embryos in the second experiment was observed in the egg groups activated with Woynarovich solution (V) at 75.5% and 74.7% for V-D (D—deionized water) and V-T (T—tap water), respectively. In all cases, preparing the activation medium using T versus D water resulted in lower fertilization percentages and lower percentages of hatched larvae. At the same time, two variants (V and B1—Billard solution) were tested during mass spawning in three hatcheries using hatchery water (tap water). The results showed that repeatability was the highest when using activation medium B1.

The library of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn has a rich collection of old prints. Among them, volumes once belonging to the Königsberg preacher Johann Graumann (1487–1541), known under the pseudonym Poliander, have been identified. There are 28 volumes with 157 bound titles. The theologian’s private library numbered nearly 1,000 copies. After his death, it was handed over to the care of the Königsberg City Council. In accordance with his will, the volumes initiated the Königsberg City Library (Stadtbibliothek Königsberg). After the end of the Second World War, the Königsberg book collection was dispersed. As a result of a campaign to secure cultural property in the former East Prussian territories, several dozen volumes of Königsberg provenance found their way to the MWiM Library in Olsztyn. The rest of J. Graumann’s book collection was transported, among others, to the University Library of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

Objective: The assessment of the usefulness of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) when qualifying patients with uterine fibroids (UFs) for magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity ultrasound (MR-HIFU). Material and methods: This retrospective, single center study included 283 women who underwent DCE-MRI and were treated with MR-HIFU. The patients were divided according to non-perfused volume (NPV) as well as by the type of curve for patients with a washout curve in the DCE-MRI study and patients without a washout curve. The studied women were assessed in three groups according to the type of uterotonics administered. Group A (57 patients) received one dose of misoprostol/diclofenac transvaginally and group B (71 patients) received oxytocin intravenously prior to the MR-HIFU procedure. The remaining 155 women (group C) were treated with the traditional non-drug enhanced MR-HIFU procedure. Results: The average NPV value was higher in no washout group, and depended on the uterotonics used. Conclusions: We demonstrated a correlation between dynamic contrast enhancement curve types and the therapeutic efficacy of MR-HIFU. Our results suggest that DCE-MRI has the potential to assess treatment outcomes among patients with UFs, and patients with UFs that present with a washout curve may benefit from the use of uterotonic drugs. More studies are required to draw final conclusions.

29. Isomers of c18:1 and c18:2 Acids in Fresh and Stored Fermented Milks Produced with Selected Starter Cultures

The effect of the applied starter cultures and storage time of fermented milk drinks on the content of cis-9, trans-11 octadecadienoic acid (CLA), as well as trans isomers of C18:1 and C18:2 acids were evaluated. The analysed fermented milk drinks were produced by the thermostat method and with three different starter cultures. Analyses were carried out for freshly produced fermented milk drinks and for stored drinks (analyses after 6, 13, and 21 days of storage). The study demonstrated that the type of applied starter culture and storage time affected the content of CLA and of trans isomers of C18:1 acid in fermented milk drinks. Among the starter cultures applied, only the Ceska-star Y508 culture caused a significant increase in CLA content in the stored fermented milk drinks. The mean content of CLA in fresh drinks reached to 3.60 mg/g fat. The significantly higher CLA contents (3.85 and 3.89 mg/g fat) were found in drinks after 6 and 13 days of storage, respectively. The content of trans isomers of C18:1 acid in fresh products was 15.92 mg/g fat. In drinks analysed after 6 days of storage it was 17.14 mg/g fat.

30. Concentration of mercury in muscles of predatory and non-predatory fish from lake Pluszne (Poland)

Introduction: The study examined the concentration of total mercury and correlation coefficients between fish size or FCF (condition factor) and the content of Hg in muscle tissue of six freshwater fish: bream (Abramis brama L.), roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.), vendace (Coregonus albula L.), perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), and pike (Esox lucius L.). Material and Methods: The fish were caught from the Lake Pluszne located in the Olsztyn Lake District (Poland). Mercury was analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry using Milestone DMA-80 (with dual-cell). Results: The content of the element in the muscles of the examined fish was as follows: pike (0.197 mg/kg) ≈ perch (0.173 mg/kg) > vendace (0.114 mg/kg) ≈ roach (0.095 mg/kg) and roach ≈ whitefish (0.065 mg/kg), and whitefish ≈ bream (0.042 mg/kg) (p ≤ 0.05). In all cases, the content of mercury correlated positively with the body weight and total length of the fish. Only the correlation coefficients between mercury concentration and weight or length of bream were slightly higher (0.979 and 0.977 respectively, p ≤ 0.001). The length and weight relationship of the fish was also determined. Conclusion: The results showed that the levels of mercury were lower than the maximum acceptable limit established by the Commission Regulation (EC) No 629/2008 of 2 July 2008. Thus, they are safe from consumer health point of view.

32. The Comparison of Fatty Acid Composition and Lipid Quality Indices in Hard Cow, Sheep, and Goat Cheeses

This study aimed to evaluate the fatty acid composition, including the contents, of conjugated linoleic acid cis9trans11 C18:2 (CLA) and trans C18:1 and C18:2 isomers in hard cow, sheep, and goat cheeses found on the Polish market and to compare lipid quality indices in these cheeses. The gas chromatography method was used to determine the fatty acid profile. The study demonstrated various contents of cis9trans 11 C18:2 (CLA), trans C18:1, and C18:2 isomers and the values of lipid quality indices in the cheeses. Sheep and goat cheeses were richer sources of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) (14.73 ± 2.55% and 14.80 ± 2.80%, respectively) than the cow cheeses (9.38 ± 0.87%). The cow cheeses had a significantly higher (p < 0.05) content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio, and the highest content of fatty acids, inducing a desirable dietary effect in humans (DFA) compared to the sheep and goat cheeses. Significantly higher (p < 0.05) contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were found in sheep cheeses. Goat cheeses had the highest n-3 PUFA content and the lowest values of the thrombogenicity index (TI) (2.67 ± 0.44) compared to the sheep and cow cheeses (3.14 ± 0.29 and 3.13 ± 0.13, respectively). The cow, sheep, and goat cheeses were characterized by similar values of the hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic (H/H) ratio. Sheep cheeses had the highest levels of cis9trans11 C18:2 (CLA) and the highest total content of trans C18:1 and trans C18:2 isomers. The research showed that sheep, cow, and goat cheeses offered various health benefits. The differences in fatty acid composition and the different values of the lipid quality indices found in the cheeses may be due to differences in both the composition of milk used to produce them and the cheese-making technology. Studies conducted by many authors have indicated that the feeding system of the ruminants has a significant impact on the quality and chemical composition of milk, as well as its applicability for cheese production.

Background: Despite advances in surgery and pharmacotherapy, there remains significant residual ischemic risk after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Methods: In REDUCE-IT (Reduction of Cardiovascular Events With Icosapent Ethyl–Intervention Trial), a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, statin-treated patients with controlled low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia were randomized to 4 g daily of icosapent ethyl or placebo. They experienced a 25% reduction in risk of a primary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina) and a 26% reduction in risk of a key secondary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) when compared with placebo. The current analysis reports on the subgroup of patients from the trial with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting. Results: Of the 8179 patients randomized in REDUCE-IT, a total of 1837 (22.5%) had a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, with 897 patients randomized to icosapent ethyl and 940 to placebo. Baseline characteristics were similar between treatment groups. Randomization to icosapent ethyl was associated with a significant reduction in the primary end point (hazard ratio [HR], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.63–0.92]; P =0.004), in the key secondary end point (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.56–0.87]; P =0.001), and in total (first plus subsequent or recurrent) ischemic events (rate ratio, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.50–0.81]; P =0.0002) compared with placebo. This yielded an absolute risk reduction of 6.2% (95% CI, 2.3%–10.2%) in first events, with a number needed to treat of 16 (95% CI, 10–44) during a median follow-up time of 4.8 years. Safety findings were similar to the overall study: beyond an increased rate of atrial fibrillation/flutter requiring hospitalization for at least 24 hours (5.0% vs 3.1%; P =0.03) and a nonsignificant increase in bleeding, occurrences of adverse events were comparable between groups. Conclusions: In REDUCE-IT patients with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, treatment with icosapent ethyl was associated with significant reductions in first and recurrent ischemic events. The onset of schizophrenia symptoms usually occurs in early youth. As a result, the parents of these patients usually become their caregivers. The role of a caregiver for a person with schizophrenia is a considerable mental and physical burden. Therefore, an interesting issue is what motivates these people to take up this challenge. It is probable that, apart from the moral imperative or kinship, the factor determining this decision is the personality structure of the caregiver. The aim of our study was to compare the structure of temperament (according to the model of temperament as formal characteristics of behavior developed by Jan Strelau) in caregivers of young adults (age 18–25 years) with schizophrenia with the structure of temperament of parents of healthy young adults still living in the family home under their care. The study group consisted of 64 people (51 women), who were taking care of young adults (aged 18–25 years) with schizophrenia, while the control group (53 people, 42 women) consisted of parents of healthy adults still living in the family home. Both groups were asked to complete a questionnaire of the authors’ own design on their demographic data as well as The Formal Characteristics of Behavior—Temperament Inventory to assess the temperament traits. The results were given in the number of points obtained on average in each dimension. Both groups did not differ in terms of size and age, with women predominating. Caregivers of young adults with schizophrenia had higher values of briskness (43.22 ± 4.45 vs. 42.90 ± 3.98, p = 0.032), emotional reactivity (46.02 ± 4.39 vs. 41.01 ± 3.12, p = 0.012) and activity level (44.01.89 ± 4.15 vs. 37.59 ± 4.77, p = 0.022) compared to the control group. The remaining dimensions of temperament: perseverance, sensory sensitivity, rhythmicity, and endurance did not differentiate between the two groups. The temperament structure of caregivers of young people with schizophrenia differs from the temperament structure of caregivers of healthy adults. Caregivers of sick people have higher values of briskness, emotional reactivity, and activity level compared to the control group.

The aim of this study was to estimate microbiological quality of bioaerosols sampled from indoor and outdoor air of stables. Two types of closed stables (type 1 and 2) and one opened were tested during winter, spring and summer periods. Summary the highest number of bacteria was in closed stable type 2 (above 105 CFU×m-3), then opened (up to 105 CFU×m-3) and stable type 1 (near low 104 CFU×m-3). The number of fungi did not exceed 104 CFU×m-3 and was the greatest in stable type 1. Pool of mesophilic bacteria isolated from bioaerosols of both closed stables represented almost the same genetic profile, as well as between psychrophilic bacteria isolated from opened stable and background.

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has a high sensitivity in detecting breast cancer but often leads to unnecessary biopsies and patient workup. We used a deep learning (DL) system to improve the overall accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis and personalize management of patients undergoing DCE-MRI. On the internal test set ( n = 3936 exams), our system achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.92 to 0.93). In a retrospective reader study, there was no statistically significant difference ( P = 0.19) between five board-certified breast radiologists and the DL system (mean ΔAUROC, +0.04 in favor of the DL system). Radiologists’ performance improved when their predictions were averaged with DL’s predictions [mean ΔAUPRC (area under the precision-recall curve), +0.07]. We demonstrated the generalizability of the DL system using multiple datasets from Poland and the United States. An additional reader study on a Polish dataset showed that the DL system was as robust to distribution shift as radiologists. In subgroup analysis, we observed consistent results across different cancer subtypes and patient demographics. Using decision curve analysis, we showed that the DL system can reduce unnecessary biopsies in the range of clinically relevant risk thresholds. This would lead to avoiding biopsies yielding benign results in up to 20% of all patients with BI-RADS category 4 lesions. Last, we performed an error analysis, investigating situations where DL predictions were mostly incorrect. This exploratory work creates a foundation for deployment and prospective analysis of DL-based models for breast MRI.

Northern pike (Esox luciusL.) is one of the fish species whose production in freshwater aquaculture may increase in the next few years. One method of producing this species is to create monosex stocks of pike, as females grow faster, mature later and gain larger body sizes. They can be obtained in the process of gynogenesis. The aim of this research was to determine and optimize the conditions of UV irradiating European perch (Perca fluviatilisL.) spermatozoa to inactivate them genetically (first experiment). The aim of this study was also to confirm whether perch spermatozoa can be used to induce northern pike gynogenesis using thermal shock (second experiment). During first experiment the highest rate of haploid larvae (29.9 ± 0.85%) was noted in the group inseminated with perch sperm irradiated for 6 min (1548 J m-2). No viable embryos were observed in groups of eggs inseminated with sperm irradiated for more than 10 minutes (2580 J m-2). The heat shock applied 12 or 14 min after gamete activation, for 3 or 5 min at 34.0°C, resulted in obtaining of gynogenetic specimen due to retention of the second polar body in all experimental groups. The most efficient was heat shock applied 14 min after gamete activation and lasting 3 min, and resulted in 18.5 ± 1.3% of gynogenetic larvae for female B. Heat shock applied 12 min after gamete activation, lasting 3 min was also effective in the case of female A, resulting in obtaining of 16.5 ± 2.1% gynogenetic specimen.

The fatty acid compositions were studied in eight commercially important fish from fish markets: salmon, Salmo salar L.; cod, Gadus morhua L.; common sole, Solea solea (L.); European flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.); catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell); rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walb.); Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.); and pangasius, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Sauvage). The freshwater fish contained 25.69-42.18% saturated, 34.90-43.79% monounsaturated, 8.46-16.32% n-6 polyunsaturated, and 5.01-20.43% n-3 polyunsaturated acid, while marine fish contained 18.53-32.77% saturated, 17.95-49.89% monounsaturated, 3.40-11.51% n-6 polyunsaturated, and 18.74-45.42% n-3 polyunsaturated acid. Marine fish contained significantly more Ʃn-3 PUFA (29.79%), EPA (12.26%), DHA (13.20%), and a higher n-3/n-6 (6.95) ratio than freshwater fish (13.13, 2.47, 7.14, 1.29%) (P≤ 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the n-3/n-6 ratio among fish species (cod (13.40) > sole (8.47) > flounder (4.30) > rainbow trout (2.41) > catfish (1.83) ≈ salmon (1.63) > tilapia (0.57) ≈ pangasius (0.36) (P ≤0.05)).

The muscles of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum, 1792), crucian carp (Carassius carassius Linnaeus, 1758), flounder (Platichthys flesus Linnaeus, 1758), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758), mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) and tench (Tinca tinca Linnaeus, 1758) were examined. The total mercury (THg) was processed using the Milestone DMA-80 and the fatty acids were analyzed using the 7890A Agilent Technologies chromatograph. The THg content in analyzed fish ranged from 0.024 (lake trout) to 0.092 mg/kg wet weight (gilthead seabream). The muscles of fish examined had lower amounts of SFAs, and n-3 and n-6 PUFAs than MUFAs. The ratio of n-3/n-6 was higher in muscles of mackerel than other fish (p < 0.05). Due to the fact that both the THQ and HI are below 1, the tested fish are safe for the consumer from a nutritional point of view. Similarly, fatty acid indices indicate the safe consumption of selected fish species, and the daily consumption of the recommended dose of EPA + DHA (250 mg/day) and the concentration of mercury in fish calculations showed a hazard quotient for the benefit–risk ratio HQEFA below 1, suggesting that the intake of EPA + DHA poses no evident risk to human health. The ratio was calculated for a person weighing 60 kg. Therefore, it is important to monitor the fish, not only bought in the store, but also caught in various aquatic environments.

The development of artistic individuality and awareness is a long and complex process, heavily influenced by the relation between a teacher’s and student’s personality, as well as the use of relevant to the situation, motivational tools. Is such a process likely to be observed while giving classes to a group of students? What factors does it depend on? What does the process of a student’s self-discovery rely on in this situation? The author presents her reflections based on the experience gained while working with choreography and musical students at the Academy of Music in Łódź.
