Purpose: Our study aims to explore the ownership structure and accounting conservatism in influencing the value relevance that we analyse through the paradigm of open innovation and socio-emotional wealth (SEW). We also extended the test to identify how firm size could affect value relevance. Design/methodology/approach: Through panel data testing, we collected all issuers on the stock exchange for the 2016–2018 period. The total collected observations are 735 observations from various industries. Findings: The results of the study provide empirical evidence that institutional ownership is more pronounce, especially in companies with high asset levels. We also conducted other tests to see it from the perspective of SEW. We divide companies into family and non-family companies. The results of this study indicate that institutional ownership has an effect on increasing value relevance, especially in family companies compared with non-family companies. The results of the study also indicate that accounting conservatism plays a more important role in increasing value relevance in non-family firms compared to family firms. Originality/value: This study advances in two main ways. First, we use a SEW approach and an open innovation perspective. Second, we conducted tests for family and non-family firms. We investigate the impact of diversity and inclusion (D&I) on firm performance for the period 2017–2021. While the existing literature examines the relationship between diversity and firm performance, little is known about the combined effects of D&I on firm performance. This study aims to utilize the most widely used data source, the Global Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Index, provided by the LSEG workspace. Using 8089 firm-year observations from a sample of globally listed firms and an OLS regression model, we find that firms with a higher D&I score have better firm performance, as measured by Tobin's Q. Our moderating analysis shows that the impact of D&I on firm performance is more pronounced for firms with higher institutional ownership. We also split institutional ownership into domestic and foreign institutional ownership and show that the influence of D&I on firm performance differs between domestic and foreign institutional ownership. Our result is robust when we use an alternative proxy for firm performance and consider the findings without US firms in the sample. The overall findings indicate that considering a diverse and inclusive workforce is worthwhile for key stakeholders when making policy decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The board of directors appoints the audit committee to assess the financial performance of the firm. The audit committee uses reports provided by audit firms, such as Form 10Ks, and annual reports to assess firm financial performance. The degree of audit oversight quality is a governance measure, which, if effective, may reduce firm risk. This study measures the effect of three measures of audit oversight quality on insolvency risk, systematic risk, and volatility of return on assets for a sample of U.S. pharmaceutical firms and energy firms from 2010 to 2022. All measures of audit oversight quality reduced firm risk, with the first measure reducing both systematic risk and volatility of return on assets, the second measure reducing systematic risk, and the third measure reducing volatility of return on assets. As institutional ownership is also a governance measure, we tested whether its joint effect with audit oversight quality reduced firm risk. This hypothesis was supported for all three measures of audit oversight quality for systematic risk and for the third audit oversight quality measure for volatility of assets. Robustness was established by replicating the regressions with an alternate governance measure, which yielded similar results. Endogeneity of all audit oversight quality measures was absent due to lack of significance of leverage, firm size, equity multiplier, and firm value in reducing risk through their effect on audit oversight quality. Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, utilities firms increase their commitments to corporate social responsibility (CSR), emphasizing on addressing environmental concerns over non‐environmental ones. The intensified focus on CSR is especially significant in utilities firms with substantial institutional ownerships. Concurrent to the increase in CSR, utilities firms also exhibit a decline in advertising expenditures, a trend more pronounced in firms facing more financial constraints. Our findings suggest that utilities firms substitute CSR for advertising following the Fukushima accident. Neuropsychologists claim that exposure to a massive water scene triggers the feeling of Awe which causes more prosocial behavior. I find that coastal firms have significantly higher corporate social responsibility (CSR) scores than non‐coastal firms. The difference‐in‐difference test shows that CSR engagement erodes when firms relocate away from coasts. These results are robust to the use of propensity score matching and entropy balancing to address selection bias, Oster's test to address omitted variable bias, and control for institutional ownership, social capital, religiosity, CEO and local political orientation, and natural disaster risk. The corporate strategic planning of businesses in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) largely focuses on immediate financial performance with minimal credence to social sustainability. Thus, studies on the linkage between corporate governance (CG) and sustainability reporting have focused on developed economies. This study therefore investigated the role of institutional ownership in the impact of board committee characteristics on social sustainability reporting. This study involved strongly balanced panel data with 1969 observations of 275 publicly listed non-financial firms in SSA within the timeframe of 2012 to 2021. Data were analyzed using STATA 14.1. The hypotheses were tested using the two-step system of the generalized method of moment (GMM) using the Arellano–Bond dynamic panel data estimation method. The rate of social sustainability reporting was 39.4%. Relatively, Mauritian and South African firms had the most effective board committee characteristics and higher levels of social sustainability reporting. Although institutional ownership had no significant effect on social sustainability reporting, it moderated the effect of sustainability committee independence and sustainability committee gender diversity on social sustainability reporting. This paper presents a new perspective on the corporate governance and social sustainability literature by examining the effect of institutional ownership on board committee characteristics and social sustainability reporting in SSA. In terms of policy implication, there is the need for mandatory regulatory and legal CG framework that is regularly updated at national and regional levels in SSA to motivate listed firms to establish sustainability committees with efficient characteristics to promote social sustainability reporting. Regulatory focus theory theorizes that there are two distinct dispositional foci of self-regulation (promotion focus and prevention focus) that impact individuals' motivational tendencies to achieve their decision-making processes. This study integrates regulatory focus theory with upper echelons theory to investigate how CEO regulatory focus (i.e., higher degrees of promotion focus relative to prevention focus) influences corporate strategic outcomes, particularly regarding the pursuit of corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance and firm performance. This study uses data collected from the annual reports of S&P 1500 firms in the US from 2000 to 2018. Results show a negative association between CEOs who are predominantly promotion-focused and CSR performance. This negative association is diminished in firms with better corporate governance (i.e., higher CEO equity compensation and greater institutional ownership). The results also show that CSR plays a mediating role in the relationship between CEO regulatory focus and firm performance. These findings not only contribute to the existing literature by highlighting the role of CEO regulatory focus in shaping CSR initiatives but also shed light on its implications for firm performance. This paper examines the relationship between board diversity and firms' decisions to voluntarily disclose information about their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We focus on board ancestral diversity as a relatively new dimension of (deep‐level) board structure and document that it has a positive and statistically significant effect on a firm's scope and quality of voluntary GHG emission disclosure. The effect goes beyond the impact of more common (surface‐level) dimensions of board diversity and remains robust after addressing endogeneity concerns. In line with the theoretical conjecture that diversity enhances a board's advising and monitoring capacity, we find that the impact of diverse boards is stronger in more complex firms and in firms with low levels of institutional ownership. This research aims to determine the effect of institutional ownership on carbon emissions disclosure, with leverage, number of top executives, company age, company size, and profitability as control variables. The sample in the research was non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, but during the research, several companies were eliminated due to incomplete data from 2018-2022. After statistical analysis and modelling, this research found that institutional ownership influences carbon emissions disclosure. In addition, control variables that influence carbon emissions disclosure are the number of top executives, company age, and company size. So the results of this research are in line with the proposed hypothesis. Although this research is limited in the available sample size because not all companies disclose carbon emissions, its novelty lies in the fact that disclosing carbon emissions for all non-financial companies in Indonesia is still an interesting topic to research related to the issue of climate change and global warming. This study explored the impacts of ownership structure (OS) on intellectual capital (IC) and its components. Data were gathered from 31 Dhaka Stock Exchange-listed banks for five years, from 2017 to 2021, consisting of 155 observations as balanced panel data. The study used the modified value-added intellectual coefficient (MVAIC) model to track the IC efficiency. The robust fixed effects model was employed for regression analysis to test the hypotheses. The research found that sponsor director ownership is negatively associated with the MVAIC, human capital efficiency (HCE), and structural capital efficiency (SCE) but positively with relational capital efficiency (RCE). High institutional and public ownership are positively linked with SCE but negatively with RCE. Foreign ownership is only positively associated with banks' MVAIC and HCE. The regression results showed that high institutional ownership (IO) significantly enhanced the MVAIC and HCE. Foreign and public ownership positively influenced banks' MVAIC, HCE, and capital employed efficiency (CEE) but negatively impacted RCE. The findings of this study will help banks' policymakers with ownership mixes for the optimum utilization of banks' resources. Management may assess IC's efficiency level for proper supervision and use of knowledge resources to boost bank profitability. Also, the findings will help investors make prudent investment decisions. This paper presents evidence that higher stock liquidity makes firms increase tone of press releases. I find that firms with higher stock liquidity have higher tone in press releases, relative to the tone of news initiated by media, than firms with lower stock liquidity. This relation is stronger for firms with greater short‐term pressure, that is, with greater transient institutional ownership, greater sensitivity of manager's wealth to stock price, and more analyst coverage. This finding suggests that stock liquidity, by producing short‐term pressure on firms, leads firms to boost press release tone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines whether state ownership and political connections affect the relationship between customer concentration and cash holdings for Chinese listed manufacturing firms. We show that non‐state‐owned firms, but not state‐owned firms, hold more cash as customer concentration increases. In addition, political connections weaken the positive effect of customer concentration on non‐state‐owned firms' cash holdings. Our supplemental analyses further show that for non‐state‐owned firms with limited access to finance—for instance, firms with low analyst following, low institutional ownership, or low government subsidies—the effects of political connections on weakening the positive association between customer concentration and cash holdings are more pronounced. We find a positive association between institutional ownership and social capital. The social norms in a region, while not imposed by businesses or laws, play a monitoring role that disciplines managers from self‐serving behaviors. The resulting trustworthiness, through its mitigation of agency problems, drives the investment preferences of institutions. Our subsample analyses based on information asymmetry and financial performance support this inference. Further, the positive association is evident for transient investors and quasi‐indexers but not for dedicated institutional investors. The common ownership of firms can have anticompetitive effects by incentivizing collusive outcomes that maximize joint surpluses of the commonly held firms or procompetitive effects through enhanced knowledge spillovers. Using a difference-in-differences regression methodology that exploits mergers between financial institutions as exogenous shocks to common ownership, our baseline results suggest that higher common ownership leads to greater product market fluidity (a text-based metric of competition) and generally leads to more product development and higher investments. These findings suggest that, on average, common ownership spurs dynamism in product spaces rather than tacit collusion between cross-held competitors. This is especially true in economic environments in which it is easier to take advantage of knowledge spillovers. However, common ownership can also inhibit product market competition and dynamism, especially in industries more prone to quasi-monopoly outcomes in product spaces. Implementing a one-size-fits-all regulatory policy limiting common ownership may be harmful in industries with strong spillover opportunities. This paper was accepted by Victoria Ivashina, finance. Motivated by the growing attention on climate change acceleration, we examine the interrelationships among corporate governance disclosure index, bank ownership structures, and bank climate change initiatives through the lens of a multi‐theoretical framework. We conduct a fixed‐effects and dynamic two‐step system generalized method of moments models over an extensive dataset. Based on panel data of 220 banks (2,785 observations) from 16 Sub‐Saharan Africa emerging economies between 2007 and 2022, the study observes that banks with higher levels of corporate governance disclosure index engage in more climate change initiatives. The study shows that ownership by institutional and foreign investors is associated with more bank climate change initiatives, while government ownership reduces climate change initiatives. Further, we document that director ownership has no impact on climate change initiatives. The study documents that the association between bank ownership structures and bank climate change initiatives is positively moderated by the extent of the corporate governance disclosure index. This moderating impact improves for banks with high corporate governance mechanisms. Finally, we show that the bank ownership structures‐climate change initiatives linkage and the moderating effect of corporate governance mechanisms on this nexus vary significantly across banks' operating periods. We identify corporate governance disclosure as the potential channel through which bank ownership structures and climate change initiatives are interlinked. Our findings call for banks to adopt and implement good governance disclosure to improve climate change initiatives. The findings make significant theoretical and regulatory contributions. This research explores the moderating effect of institutional ownership on the relationship between audit committee attributes and audit report lag. The paper sampled data from 102 Saudi non-financial listed firms from 2012 to 2021. The data was analyzed using a fixed effect regression, while the generalized method of moments approach (GMM) was employed for robustness check. The research finding strongly suggests that the audit committee size may increase audit report lag. In contrast, it was found that audit committee independence and financial expertise may reduce audit report lag. In addition, the interaction effect reveals that the impact of audit committee financial expertise and the committee meetings on reducing audit report lag may be higher as institutional shareholding rises. Thus, the outcome validates the agency theory perspective that the active monitoring of institutional investors may shape firms' internal governance systems. More importantly, the finding implies that firms should prefer a smaller audit size with a higher ratio of independent directors and financial experts to improve financial reporting quality. They should also embrace institutional shareholding to reduce audit report lag. We examine the association between strategic deviation—defined as the deviation of firms' resource allocation from that of industry peers—and corporate tax avoidance. By combining the agency perspective with the risk aspect, we argue that managers of firms with high strategic deviation avoid tax compared with those of firms with low strategic deviation. High-strategic-deviant firms who avoid tax are likely to face the risk of compromising firm value. Based on a large sample of 40,168 US firm-year observations for the period 1987–2020, we find evidence supporting our hypothesis. A series of robustness tests validates our main finding. We further provide evidence to suggest that the positive association between strategic deviation and tax avoidance is stronger for deviant firms with high financial constraints, low institutional ownership, firms operating in more competitive markets, and procuring higher auditor provided tax services from incumbent auditors. This study investigates the effect of historical military conflict (between the home countries of venture capital (VC) firms and portfolio companies) on the performance of cross‐border VC investments. Using exhaustive data on global cross‐border investments during 1986–2017, we find that adverse memories imprinted by historical military conflict have a negative effect on cross‐border performance as measured by internal rate of return and public market equivalent. We show that nation‐dyadic (i.e. political affinity) and ownership control strategy (i.e. board seat and syndication)‐related contingencies moderate the relationship between historical military conflict and cross‐border performance. Collectively, our findings shed light on the presence of intergroup interaction challenges and mistrust when investing in cross‐border VC deals and demonstrate channels to mitigate their adverse effects. This study selects stock data of listed companies in China's A-share stock market from 2011 to 2020 as research samples. Using a fixed-effects model, it examines the impact of analyst optimism on stock price collapses and the moderating effect of information disclosure quality. Simultaneously, it conducts additional research to explore the potential transmission mechanisms involved. The main findings are as follows: Firstly, a positive correlation exists between analyst optimism and the risk of stock price collapse. Secondly, improving information disclosure quality of listed companies can enhance the positive impact of analyst optimism on the risk of stock price collapses and expedite the market's adjustment of overly optimistic valuations of listed companies. Additionally, analyst optimism can increase the risk of stock price collapses by affecting institutional ownership. These findings provide theoretical support for regulatory authorities to revise and improve the "information disclosure evaluation" system, regulate the analyst industry, guide analyst behavior, and encourage listed companies to enhance internal governance and improve information disclosure practices. Purpose: The aim of this study is to measure the risk disclosure level and to determine the relationship between ownership structure dimensions (institutional ownership, foreign ownership and family ownership) and corporate risk disclosure in Jordan. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a sample of 94 Jordanian listed firms from the Amman Stock Exchange for the period from 2014 to 2017. This study measured risk disclosure using the number of risk-related sentences in the annual report, while random effects regression was used for hypotheses testing. Findings: The results revealed that family ownership has a negative effect on risk disclosure practices, but institutional ownership, foreign ownership, firm size and leverage have no significant effect on the risk disclosure level. Practical implications: The finding of this study is more likely be useful for many concerned parties, researchers, authorities, investors and financial analysts alike in understanding the current practices of the risk disclosure in Jordan, thus helping them in reconsidering and reviewing the accounting standards and improving the credibility and transparency of the financial reports in the Jordanian capital market. Originality/value: This study offers novel evidence detailing the impact of ownership structure toward corporate risk disclosure, its implementation in emerging markets following the minimal amount of scholarly efforts on the topic. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first examination of the impact of ownership structure on corporate risk disclosure. Thus, this study has important implications for the decisions of executives, policymakers, shareholders and lenders, as it enables them to better understand the linkage between ownership structure on corporate risk disclosure. This paper investigates the effects of institutional investor horizons on investment efficiency in China. By analysing 26,831 firm‐year observations from Chinese listed companies, we find that long‐term (short‐term) institutional ownership is negatively (positively) associated with the level of inefficient investments. A battery of robustness tests indicates causality. Further analyses reveal that the rise in environmental uncertainty and information asymmetry are transmission channels for increased inefficient investments. Moreover, we find that the single controlling shareholder and state owner can curb the management myopia induced by short‐term institutional investors while they do not impede the monitoring effort of long‐term institutional investors. This study investigates the impact of board governance mechanism on investment efficiency (IE) in PSX-listed firms. The study also examines the role of institutional ownership (IO) in board-IE relationships. In addition, we extend our analysis to re-examine this relationship by splitting the sample into two groups, i.e., the introductory phase of corporate governance (CG) i.e., 2004 to 2013, and revised codes of CG (2014 to 2018) to examine the impact of these separately on IE. The sample data comprises 155 non-financial PSX-listed firms from 2004 to 2018. IE is measured using firms' growth opportunities. The random effect model is used to test the study's hypotheses. A robustness test is also performed to validate the study's findings. The paired-sample t-test results show a significant improvement in IE after revising the CG codes in 2012. According to the regression results, board size has a significant direct, whereas board diversity has a significant inverse effect on IE. Regarding moderating effect, IO was found to moderate the relationship between board independence and IE significantly. Furthermore, it was discovered that following the issuance of revised CG codes-2012, the level of board independence and diversity increased in PSX-listed firms; however, only diversity positively impacted IE, and board independence had no impact on IE from 2014 to 2018. Despite the issuance of revised CG codes-2012, the level of CG among PSX-listed firms is low, which is a source of concern for regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. This research investigates whether institutional ownership contributes to enhancement of stock liquidity in emerging markets. The study examines data of listed companies on the Vietnamese stock market. Using a comprehensive data set for all stocks listed on Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE) and Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) from 2008 to 2017, the statistical findings consistently demonstrate that institutional ownership has a negative impact on stock liquidity. In other words, the empirical evidence supports the adverse selection hypothesis that the upward trend of institutional ownership could reduce stock liquidity because the institutional investors with superior and advantageous information could exacerbate informational asymmetry issues. By using a case study in Vietnam, this research makes an original contribution to the academic literature by examining the relationship between institutional investors and stock liquidity in emerging markets. In addition, this study offers policymakers, authorities, agencies, and managers some insightful recommendations and implications that will help to not only promote the active participations of professional institutions but also improve stock liquidity, fairness, and efficiency. This paper studies the cost of capital effect of a major regulatory technology, or RegTech, event: the staggered implementation of the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system of the Securities and Exchange Commission in the period from 1993 to 1996. This event represents a largely exogenous shock to corporate information dissemination technologies, resulting in a considerable reduction in information acquisition costs for investors. Using a difference-in-differences research design, we show that the cost of equity capital declines substantially after a firm switches from paper filing to mandatory electronic filing in EDGAR. The effect is stronger for small firms and firms with low analyst coverage and low institutional ownership. We identify three channels through which EDGAR affects a firm's cost of capital: the liquidity, risk-taking, and corporate governance channels. EDGAR implementation also improves a firm's investment efficiency significantly. Purpose – As the influence of institutional investors over managerial decision-making grows, so does the importance of understanding the effect of institutional investor ownership (IO) on firm outcomes. The authors take a comprehensive approach to studying the effect of IO on earnings management (EM). Design/methodology/approach – The authors study the relation between IO and EM using a sample of 59,503 listed U.S. firm-year observations from 1981–2019. The authors proxy EM with earnings surprises and with accrual-based and real activity measures. The authors test for nonlinear relations and analyze changes resulting from the passage of the Sarbanes–Oxley Act. Findings – The findings support a positive IO-EM relation overall, but show that the relation is dynamic and heavily context-dependent with evidence of nonlinearity. The authors also find evidence that IO positively affects accrual-based EM and real activities EM negatively. We study the effect of managerial time horizon on two key operations decisions: inventory levels and capacity investment. For identification, we exploit a quasi‐natural experiment provided by the staggered adoption of constituency statutes, which alleviate managerial short‐termism by providing legal protection to executives adopting a long‐term approach in their corporate decisions. Using a staggered difference‐in‐differences design, we find that, after the reforms, firms incorporated in constituency states (treated firms) increased inventory and capacity investment by 5.2% and 15.4%, respectively, relative to firms not incorporated in constituency states (control firms). We also find that these increases are gradual and persist over time, suggesting that they are structural in nature. We further show that the effect of constituency statutes on inventory levels and capacity investment are stronger for firms with ex ante higher level of managerial short‐termism, such as firms with low institutional ownership. Performance also increases relatively more for affected firms with higher ex ante managerial short‐termism. Our results pass a battery of robustness and validity tests. Interestingly, while constituency statutes are intended to protect executives from short‐term oriented shareholder sanctions, our findings suggest that these statutes ultimately benefited not only executives, but also potentially the long‐term interest of shareholders. Even in the absence of regulation, executives facing short‐term pressure could intensify communication efforts with shareholders on how specific operational decisions and investments would be beneficial to the company. Due to the increasingly serious environmental pollution, stakeholders are paying more attention on the environmental behavior of enterprises. Our paper investigates how institutional investors affect the quality of corporate environmental information disclosure (EID). Using a sample of A-share listed firms from the heavily polluting industries in China during 2008 to 2016, we conduct correlation analysis, OLS regression, and Tobit regression methods and find that institutional investors' shareholdings are positively correlated with the quality of EID. When institutional investors increase 1% shareholdings of the firm, the EID quality improves by 0.03%. In addition, the high concentration of institutional ownership enhances the impact of institutional investors' shareholdings on the EID quality. But this positive correlation is only observed in companies in regions with a high marketization level. Voluntary disclosure, especially disclosure of carbon emissions in mining companies, is still low. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of carbon emission disclosure on financial performance and to find out whether the ownership of institutions can moderate the impact of carbon emission disclosure on financial performance. The data for this study was collected from annual reports and sustainability reports. The sample for this research is 305 mining companies and transportation companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and Malaysia Stock Exchange in 2018 - 2022. The research model used is moderated regression analysis (MRA). The research results show that carbon emission disclosure has a negative effect on financial performance and institutional ownership can moderate the effect of carbon emission disclosure on financial performance. This research delves into the multifaceted relationships between Transfer Pricing, Leverage, Profitability, Profit Management, and Tax Avoidance, with the moderating influence of Institutional Ownership in manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI). The study employs a descriptive research design with a quantitative approach, utilizing a multiple linear regression-based method through EViews. The research population comprises manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) between 2020 and 2021. The purposive sampling method was employed, resulting in a sample of 81 manufacturing companies, totaling 162 observations. Secondary data were collected from the official IDX website www.idx.co.id and www.yahoofinance.com. The findings indicate that Transfer Pricing and Leverage exhibit a significant positive influence on Tax Avoidance in manufacturing companies, while Profitability demonstrates a significant negative effect on Tax Avoidance. Conversely, Profit Management does not exhibit a significant impact on Tax Avoidance. Moreover, Institutional Ownership is identified as a moderator, strengthening the influence of Transfer Pricing and Leverage on Tax Avoidance. However, Institutional Ownership does not reinforce the influence of Profitability and Profit Management on Tax Avoidance. It employs a sample of 19950 firm-year observations for 1995 firms, which are listed companies on the A-Shares Board in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchange markets for the year 2011 to 2020. The data were analyzed using fixed effect regression. A two-step system GMM was used for the robustness test. Results suggested that state and institutional ownership negatively affect the firm's leverage, which supports the resource-based theory. Furthermore, this study revealed that the negative effect of state ownership and institutional ownership on leverage diminished when firms are located in provinces with more matured product markets. These findings have important implications for the Chinese government in terms of developing and enforcing capital structure regulations to promote de-leverage. Management in the banking industry is not solely focused on financial performance but also on the sustainability of their portfolios. To achieve this, banks need to incorporate sustainable finance into their balance sheet. In addition, a global phenomenon has emerged where investors have demanded the inclusion of sustainable finance in portfolios. This financial instrument served to support the global agreement on climate change, which they were committed to making a reality. The impact of sustainable finance on firm value remains a question. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of sustainable finance and capital on firm value within the banking industry, focusing on entities listed on the ASEAN stock market from 2015 to 2021. To assess investor demand for involvement in sustainable finance, a moderating variable was included in the model. Furthermore, this study used a quantitative design and a purposive sampling technique with panel data regression analysis for the hypothesis testing. The results showed that sustainable finance and capital had a significant effect on firm value. Institutional ownership moderated the relationship between sustainable finance and firm value, although it did not moderate the link between capital and firm value. This indicated that banks prioritized sustainable finance due to its positive impact on their operations, ultimately leading to an improvement in firm value. Furthermore, institutional ownership influenced the relationship between sustainable finance and firm value, as banks strived to comply with international society or enhance firm value. This research examines the relationship between board independence and earnings stability in Indian companies. The study focuses on the BSE-500 index constituents, which represent 4,044 firm-years from 2011 to 2022, and aims to fill gaps in the literature by providing insights into how various board characteristics affect earnings stability. The study employs a novel non-linear approach that integrates Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) and Stewardship Theory to assess the impact of board independence on earnings stability. The study uses a quadratic regression model to examine the relationship between board independence and earnings stability, with earnings stability measured using the Return on Assets Consistency Ratio (ROACR). The findings indicate an inverted U-shaped relationship between board independence and earnings stability, suggesting there is an optimal level of board independence that maximizes stability in earnings. The study also explores other factors such as asset turnover ratio, institutional ownership, leverage, promoter holdings, and firm size. This research highlights the importance of balanced board composition and provides valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to optimize corporate governance structures for sustainable firm performance. We show that intensified competition changes the location of business activity and, in turn, affects supply chain relationships. Using establishment-level data, we find that, when upstream product markets become more competitive, suppliers are more likely to relocate their establishments closer to customers. Following the supplier's relocation, its sales to the customer increase, its relationship with the customer is less likely to be terminated, and its innovation is more aligned with the customer's innovation. The relocated supplier also experiences more analyst following and institutional ownership that are in common with the customer and is more likely to issue equity than debt. However, the improved relationship, by causing the supplier to engage more in innovation dedicated to the customer, adversely affects creative innovation, which is known to drive growth. By proxying 'awe culture' (i.e., reverence for life and ethical behaviour) with regional induced abortion rates, we examine the impact of awe culture on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a sample of Chinese firms. We find that firms located in areas with higher induced abortion rates spend less funds on CSR activities and obtain lower CSR scores. The findings remain intact after an array of robustness tests. Further analysis shows that the effect of awe culture on CSR is more pronounced in areas with weaker law enforcement and where the local government emphasises economic growth targets. However, the effect becomes insignificant when firms are well‐represented by top executives with overseas experience, foreign directors, and a high proportion of female board members. The significance of the effect also diminishes for non‐state‐owned firms, and firms with higher institutional ownership and higher cash holdings. Moreover, the lack of awe culture attenuates the positive impact of CSR on firm value. Overall, we document that awe culture, as an informal institution, shapes CSR behaviours. We hypothesise that societal norms cause institutional investors to discriminate against polluters. Consistent with this hypothesis, we document relatively lower institutional ownership for the most polluting firms in the United States. Institutional discrimination against polluters increases over 1987–2018, in line with increasing environmental awareness. Institutions are primarily averse to investments in dioxin emitters. Institutions that prioritize portfolio performance are less sensitive to societal norms against polluters, as are institutions with shorter investment horizons and more aggressive trading strategies. Lastly, we test whether investor discrimination affects polluter equity valuations and creates systematic trading opportunities, but find no convincing evidence of a polluter return premium. We investigate whether ownership structure influences the likelihood and amount of dividend payments in two groups of European Union's public companies: Nordic and Baltic. Nordic and Baltic capital markets have become increasingly integrated through Nasdaq OMX stock exchanges and harmonized by the EU corporate governance directives. However, some differences in the corporate governance system, legislation, practice, and ownership structure still exist. The study covers Nordic and Baltic companies listed on the Nasdaq OMX for the period 2013–2020. Logit and Tobit panel regressions are applied to disclose the effect of ownership structure on the likelihood and amount of dividend payments accordingly. We find that ownership concentration positively influences the likelihood and amount of dividend payments in Nordic public companies. Managerial ownership does not influence the likelihood of dividend payments but positively influences their amount. Institutional ownership does not influence the likelihood of dividend payments but negatively influences their amount. Our findings revealed that ownership structure does not have any effect either on the likelihood of dividend payments or on their amount in Baltic public companies. We disclosed that the effect of ownership structure on dividend payments is influenced by the context behind ownership structure. The results of our research will improve understanding and predict the decision-making on dividend payments and will help investors manage their portfolios, choosing between current and future consumption. Taxation has a vital role as a domestic financial source to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To increase domestic revenue, combating tax avoidance is important, especially for Indonesia, one of the most populous countries with the fact that the 2020 country's tax-to-GDP ratio decreased to 10.1% in 2020 which is below the Asia and Pacific average of 19.1%. This paper examines the effect of the tax policy of Indonesia, i.e., tax amnesty and other factors on tax aggressiveness. Indonesia is taken as the case study for the specific characteristics of its tax reforms. The sample of this study consists of 402 observations from manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) for the periods of 2013–2018. This study collected secondary data and employed a purposive sampling method for the selection of samples. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the factors affecting tax aggressiveness. The results show that internal governance mechanisms, namely independent commissioners and institutional ownership, as well as the company's characteristics, namely leverage and profitability, have a significant effect on tax aggressiveness. This study, however, cannot find the effectiveness of tax amnesty in combatting tax aggressiveness. This study has the objective of examining how internal corporate governance mechanisms are related to earnings manipulation, measured by real-based earnings manipulation (REM) and accrual-based earnings manipulation (AEM). The internal corporate governance mechanisms discussed in this study signify two main kinds of board characteristics (board size and board independence) and three main kinds of ownership structure (institutional ownership, foreign ownership and business group affiliation). The study models were examined from eight countries selected from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. A total of 480 non-financial firms listed between 2012 and 2019 were examined. Based on panel data-based generalised methods of moments (GMM) estimation, the findings showed that institutional ownership in MENA nations limits the use of REM and AEM. Additionally, we found that larger boards are more likely to participate in REM practices. Board independence has a positive association with REM and AEM. The results also reveal that business group affiliation has a significant effect on both methods of earnings manipulation. Foreign ownership does not seem to significantly impact either of the two manipulation methods. Finally, these results help regulators and policymakers pursue reforms to enhance national governance quality in the MENA region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper uses evidence from the historical African slave trade to extend prior theory linking modern firm ownership structure to institutions and social capital. We argue that institutions and social capital are not simply predictors of ownership structure but can also be historically persistent mechanisms through which past traumatic shocks to society shape modern businesses. Using data from over 30,000 firms across 41 sub-Saharan countries, we show that firms in areas that suffered high historical slave extraction are today more likely to have concentrated ownership. High slave export countries have more sole proprietorships and majority ownership, with our model implying a difference of 43 percentage points between the lowest and highest export countries. This difference is particularly pronounced in the manufacturing sector, where high capital needs can necessitate diffuse ownership when credit markets are weak. Finally, we present modest evidence that weakened institutions and social capital are among the mechanisms through which the historical slave trade increases modern ownership concentration. Our paper answers recent calls to bring both Africa and history back into management research through our theoretical extension into distinct and quantifiable historical origins of firm structure.
