Wave- and current-supported fluid mud on gently sloped continental shelves represents a type of sediment gravity flow capable of rapidly transporting substantial sediment over short periods, significantly contributing to coastal geomorphic evolution. To investigate the dynamics of intertidal fluid mud events, in-situ observations were conducted from May 9 to May 18, 2017, using a seabed tripod system at the lower intertidal flat of the central Jiangsu coast, China. Fluid mud was observed following a medium wind-wave event, with a maximum significant wave height of 0.42 m. The liquefied seabed, loosened by liquefaction, facilitated bed erosion and sediment resuspension. Fluid mud layers, with mean suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) exceeding 10 g/L, periodically formed during high slack tide, early flood, and late ebb phases. These layers varied in thickness from 4 cm to 20 cm and exhibited strong stratification caused by suspended sediment. Fluid mud disappeared when the bottom turbulence kinetic energy exceeded a threshold of 0.00045 m2/s2 due to an increase in current velocity. The downslope movement of intertidal fluid mud was estimated using a theoretical buoyancy-friction model and validated by observed offshore-directed velocity jets at 0.1 m above the seabed during high slack tide phases. Additionally, onshore winds favored fluid mud formation during early flood phases, while offshore winds favored it during late ebb phases. These observations suggest that fluid mud can form on intertidal flats under conditions where tidal flows and winds align, contributing to a deeper understanding of the formation mechanisms of shallow gravity flows and the improvement of sediment transport models. As escalating environmental pressures threaten the world's beaches, understanding the driving factors influencing their geomorphological changes is of critical global importance. This study focuses on the morphological changes of Sigeng beach adjacent to Changhua River Mouth in Hainan Island, China through decadal monitoring of shoreline and profile topography and tries to illuminate the natural and anthropogenic factors that drove geomorphological changes. The results showed that Sigeng beach undergone significant changes between 2008 and 2024, with notable accretion at the northernmost and southernmost and general erosion at other sections. The shoreline change rates ranged between -18.4 m/yr and 13.0 m/yr, with the average rate of -1.9 m/yr, indicating overall erosion. The net longshore sediment transport (LST) rates along Sigeng beach was estimated through the combination of the cross-shore (profile) and longshore (shoreline) changes. The overall direction of net LST along the beach were southward, except for the northern section where the direction was northward due to the diffraction of NE waves by the long sand spit at the northernmost. The net LST rates at each profile varied from 0.8×104 m³/yr to 3.5×104 m³/yr. The main factors controlling Sigeng beach evolution, including seasonal wave action and reduction in fluvial sediment load, followed by sand spit and coastal structures, typhoon events, aeolian transport, and sea level rise, were discussed. Subsequently, adaptive protection measures, including beach nourishment, accompanied with groin system or multiple detached breakwaters were proposed to combat with beach erosion. Climate change and human activities exert significant influence on the water–sediment relationship in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore, comprehending the underlying mechanisms is crucial for the effective management of water and soil resources, as well as integrated watershed management. This research focuses on the Kuye River watershed (KYH_W) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River in China, along with its sub-watersheds Wangdaohengtazi (WDHT_SW) and Xinmiaosi (XM_SW). This paper utilizes the Mann–Kendall non-parametric test and the double cumulative curve method to examine the interannual trends of runoff, sediment transport, precipitation, temperature, and NDVI factors. Furthermore, the method of the slope change ratio of cumulative quantity (SCRCQ) is utilized to quantitatively evaluate the impacts and contribution rates of climate change and human activities on water–sediment changes within each watershed. The results are as follows: (1) From 1969 to 2019, the entire watershed experienced a significant decrease in both runoff and sediment transport, with 1997 marking the year of abrupt change. However, following 2012, the KYH_W and WDHT_SW exhibited a noticeable rebound in runoff. (2) Human activities predominantly contribute to the reduction in water and sediment in the watershed. (3) After the abrupt change, between 1998 and 2011, the contribution rates of climate change and human activities to the annual runoff reduction in the entire KYH_W reached 33% and 64%, respectively. Moreover, these rates for sediment transport reduction reached 26% and 74%, respectively. Subsequently, after 2012, the contribution rates of both factors to the increase in watershed runoff reached 29% and 71%, respectively. Factors other than the NDVI, within human activities, played a dominant role in augmenting the watershed's runoff. (4) Prior to 2011, changes in vegetation cover resulting from the Grain for Green Program, as measured by the NDVI, emerged as the primary factor responsible for reduced runoff in the watershed. Conversely, factors other than the NDVI assumed dominance in reducing sediment transport. The SCRCQ method offers a quantitative approach to assessing water–sediment changes. Based on this method, the study further underscores the substantial impacts of climate change and human activities on variations in runoff and sediment transport within the KYH_W in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. In‐situ observations of hydrodynamics and suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) were conducted on an abandoned lobe in the northern part of the modern Yellow River Delta, China. The SSC record at the site is found to be the superposition of a general trend (fast increase and slow decrease cycle) caused by storm waves (SubSSC1) and relatively smaller fluctuations caused by tidal currents (SubSSC2). Physically, this indicates that storm waves eroded the bottom sediments while tidal currents then re‐suspended and advected the suspended sediments in the study area. To further obtain the suspended sediment transport parameters, first, SubSSC1 is modeled with significant wave height which incorporates a "memory curve" to consider the remaining impacts of historical waves. It is detected that waves in the past 75 hr still influence the present SSC which is reasonable because 75 hr is roughly the typical duration of a normal storm. Second, SubSSC2 is modeled with tidal excursion and trigonometric functions with measured periodicities. Finally, some sediment transport parameters, for example, the background SSC, the horizontal SSC gradient, the tidal constituents that advect it, and their relative time lags are optimized from the best fits of the measured and modeled SSC time series. The proposed framework for model construction and parameter optimization can be extended to other sea areas for inferring sediment transport parameters from field SSC time series at a specific station. Plain Language Summary: The evolution of our coastal zone fundamentally depends on the transport volume and direction of sediment, and understanding them is very beneficial for our coastal engineering construction and long‐term planning. Conducting in situ observations on‐site is one of the most reliable methods, but its observation cost is expensive. Therefore, we hope to extract as much information as possible from as few observation points as possible. This article successfully extracted the above information from the observation data of a station. First, we analyzed the data to preliminarily clarify that the suspended sediment in the area mainly comes from local erosion resuspension and advection transport from other regions. Furthermore, we conducted data modeling (i.e., constructed mathematical expressions of suspended sediment components from different sources, but with undetermined coefficients). Finally, we adjusted the model parameters to approximate the measured results, determined the undetermined coefficients, and explained the practical significance of the undetermined coefficients in physics. A sea-crossing bridge is typically constructed in a marine environment with complex piers, and is susceptible to severe scour at the foundation. This study presents a numerical investigation on flow and scour around a complex pier, specifically focusing on a real-world sea-crossing bridge in China. A comprehensive CFD model incorporating hydrodynamic, free surface, sediment transport, and morphological models is employed for numerical modeling. Additionally, a wind shear stress model is considered to accurately simulate wind generation. The validation of the CFD model is achieved through comparison with experimental data of scour around a cylinder, demonstrating its capability to accurately replicate scour morphology and the temporal evolution of scour depth. Subsequently, the validated model is utilized for full-scale simulation of scour around the complex bridge pier under different wind, wave, and current conditions. The results indicate that compared to single piers with uniform cross-sectional shapes, flow patterns around complex piers are much more complicated. Scour predominantly occurs around the first row of group piles, while downstream piles experience less scour due to the sheltering effect from upstream piles. Furthermore, it becomes evident that the current exerts greater influence on pier scour than waves and wind, while the latter two factors primarily influence the superstructure of the bridge. Continental marginal seas are key systems in the global carbon cycle. Carbon stocks represent the ability to store carbon, thus quantifying the carbon stocks in marine sediments would help to better understand their importance in the carbon cycle. In this study, 17 sediment cores in the mud areas of the South Yellow Sea and the East China Sea were measured for total organic carbon (TOC) and its stable isotope (d13C), and dry bulk density; and from which the carbon stocks and carbon stock accumulation rate as well as marine/terrestrial carbon stocks/carbon stock accumulation rate were calculated. The carbon stocks in the mud area of the South Yellow Sea showed a decreasing trend during 1855 to 1950 caused by the relocation of the Yellow River Estuary in 1855, but increased after 1950s due to increased sediment input via the enhancement of South Shandong Coastal Current. In the Min-Zhe belt of the East China Sea, carbon stocks showed an overall high marine proportion due to the phytoplankton bloom induced by high nutrient level, but the decreased carbon stocks in recent decades were mainly caused by the construction of reservoirs in the Yangtze River that reduced sediment transports. The average carbon stocks in 1 m sediments from the South Yellow Sea (45.2 t ha-1) and Min-Zhe belt (52.8 t ha-1) were low compared to that of global marine sediments (66.6 t ha-1), while the carbon stock accumulation rate showed much higher values (0.1 t ha-1 yr-1 in South Yellow Sea and 0.31 t ha-1 yr-1 in the Min-Zhe belt) because of higher sedimentation rates. Although carbon stocks of Chinese marginal seas were also lower than that of the tidal flats (70.7 t ha-1) and wetland (123.6 t ha-1) in China, their much larger area could store 0.75 Pg C in marine sediments. Our temporal records suggest that anthropogenic activities have reduced carbon stocks in the marginal seas since 1950, causing carbon to re-enter the atmosphere to impact climate changes. Rainfall is an important factor that causes riverine flow and sediment transport, and extreme rainfall has a particularly significant effect on the fluctuations of riverine flow and sediment load. Based on the daily rainfall from 1990 to 2020, in the upper watershed of the Lianjiang River, which is one of the source tributaries of China's largest freshwater lake (Poyang Lake), the 95th percentile method and minimum event interval time were employed to identify extreme rainfall events. Mann–Kendall test was used to check for abrupt changes in annual rainfall, riverine flow discharge, and riverine sediment loads, and to identify abrupt-change years; thus, different periods were divided via the abrupt change years. Multiple linear regression was applied to explore the lag effect of riverine flow-discharge and sediment-load response to antecedent rainfall, with different cumulative durations for each period. The results of the study indicated that (1) the expansion of garden land in 1995 caused a significant and abrupt change in sediment load. (2) Extreme rainfall events had a greater impact on riverine flow and sediment load as compared to ordinary rainfall. These events were found to explain more variations in riverine flow and sediment load, which led to longer lag times for both riverine flow and sediment transport. (3) The expansion of garden land under extreme rainfall conditions resulted in longer lag times for riverine flow and sediment transport, and reduced the need for antecedent rainfall with a longer pre-event time. Therefore, the analysis of antecedent rainfall and the lag response of riverine flow discharge and sediment load can help in understanding the response mechanism of riverine flow discharge and sediment load for the current era of increasing extreme rainfall. This analysis is crucial for improving the accuracy of simulating riverine flow and sediment under extreme rainfall conditions. Landslides pose significant and serious geological threat disasters worldwide, threatening human lives and property; China is particularly susceptible to these disasters. This paper focuses on Pengyang County, which is situated in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China, an area prone to landslides. This study investigated the application of machine learning techniques for analyzing landslide susceptibility. To construct and validate the model, we initially compiled a landslide inventory comprising 972 historical landslides and an equivalent number of non-landslide sites (Data sourced from the Pengyang County Department of Natural Resources). To ensure an impartial evaluation, both the landslide and non-landslide datasets were randomly divided into two sets using a 70/30 ratio. Next, we extracted 15 landslide conditioning factors, including the slope angle, elevation, profile curvature, plan curvature, slope aspect, TWI (topographic wetness index), TPI (topographic position index), distance to roads and rivers, NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), rainfall, land use, lithology, SPI (stream power index), and STI (sediment transport index), from the spatial database. Subsequently, a correlation analysis between the conditioning factors and landslide occurrences was conducted using the certainty factor (CF) method. Three landslide models were established by employing logistic regression (LR), functional trees (FTs), and random subspace functional trees (RSFTs) algorithms. The landslide susceptibility map was categorized into five levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high susceptibility. Finally, the predictive capability of the three algorithms was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The better the prediction, the higher the AUC value. The results indicate that all three models are predictive and practical, with only minor discrepancies in accuracy. The integrated model (RSFT) displayed the highest predictive performance, achieving an AUC value of 0.844 for the training dataset and 0.837 for the validation dataset. This was followed by the LR model (0.811 for the training dataset and 0.814 for the validation dataset) and the FT model (0.776 for the training dataset and 0.760 for the validation dataset). The proposed methods and resulting landslide susceptibility map can assist researchers and local authorities in making informed decisions for future geohazard prevention and mitigation. This paper used dynamic image analysis (DIA) to analyze the grain size and shape data of beach surface sediments in Bao'ding Bay, eastern Hainan Island, China, and explored the effects of sediment transport modes and beach morphology on the grain size–shape trend curves. This paper adopted a method of combining grain size cumulative frequency curves and grain size–shape trend curves to identify three sediment transport modes: suspension, saltation, and traction, and analyzed the characteristics of the grain size–shape trend curves under different beach morphologies (reflective, intermediate, and dissipative). This paper found that the grain size–shape trend curves can effectively indicate the sediment transport modes and improve the accuracy of subpopulation division; the grain size–shape trend curves showed different distribution characteristics in the cross-shore and longshore directions, which are closely related to the beach's morphology and sediment transport direction. The ecology of the aquatic environment in Poyang Lake, the largest fresh lake in China, is notably impacted by the backflow from the Yangtze River, which conveys a high flux of sediments. This study employs a widely recognized numerical model to replicate the backflow in 2007 (the strongest backflow after the operation initiation of the Three Gorges Dam) to investigate the contributions of wind and backflow to the sediment transport process. The results show that the influences of wind and backflow on flow patterns and sediment transport processes have significant spatial heterogeneity. In the narrow waterway leading to the central lake area, hydrodynamics is mainly driven by backflow. Conversely, the hydrodynamics of the open expanse of the lake is primarily influenced by wind forces. Dominant wind leads to the formation of gyres, which significantly alter flow paths and push sediment into the upstream areas. As a result, the suspended sediment area expands at an average rate of 20.1-21.3 km² daily, marking a 75-85% surge compared to the no wind condition (11.5 km2). Several Carboniferous deep-marine-sandstone reservoirs have recently been discovered in the Junggar Basin, NW China. These reservoir sandstones were deposited by sediment-gravity flows that occurred on the continental slope of the Junggar Basin, and they have high hydrocarbon exploration potential. In this study, careful observations and petrological and geochemical analyses of samples from outcrop sections of Carboniferous rocks from the Junggar Basin were conducted to establish the deep-marine sedimentary characteristics, depositional environments, and mechanism of these gravity-flow deposits, as well as a sedimentary model for their occurrence. The deep-marine, gravity-flow deposit types include those of turbidity currents, debris flows, and slumps. The debris-flow deposits can be divided into pebbly debris-flow deposits and sandy debris-flow deposits. Results allow the relationship between the type and nature of gravity flows and ocean basin evolution to be established. During the early Carboniferous, the ocean basin had sufficient space to accommodate incoming sediment, and the sediment transport distance was long. The gravity-flow sediments of this period are dominated by sandy debris-flow deposits and turbidity-flow deposits characterised by thin individual layers but thick accumulations of multiple deposits. With continuous narrowing of the oceanic basin during the late Carboniferous, the basin had a smaller accommodation space. The main types of gravity-flow deposition during this period were pebbly and sandy debris flows, with rare thin turbidity-flow deposits. These deposits were coarser grained than their early Carboniferous equivalents, and their cumulative thicknesses were smaller. The flood season is the main period for runoff and sediment yield, and understanding the variations of runoff and sediment of flood events is of great significance for distinguishing the runoff-sediment processes in the Loess Plateau. In this study, we analyzed the variations of runoff and sediment at the flood event scale in the Qiaogou catchment and investigated the influencing factors. The results showed that runoff and sediment of flood events were mainly produced by rainfall with short rainfall duration and heavy rainfall intensity in the study area. Based on the 28 flood events and corresponding precipitation data from the reference period (P-I, 1986–1989) and the revegetation period (P-II, 2001–2009), we analyzed the variations of runoff-sediment processes at the flood event scale in the Qiaogou catchment, a typical catchment of the Loess Plateau. The results showed that the flood variables were lower in the revegetation period than those in the reference period, except for the flood peak discharge time and the flood duration. The sediment transport capacity per unit runoff depth in the revegetation period was weaker than that in the reference period. The hysteresis analysis indicated that the patterns of the hysteretic loop were dominated by the figure-of-eight pattern and the compound pattern, respectively, in the reference period and revegetation period. Compared to the reference period, runoff and sediment-related variables for flood events of counter-clockwise, figure-of-eight, and compound patterns were less in the revegetation period. With similar rainfall conditions, the main reason for the noticeable difference in runoff and sediment of flood events for the two periods was the variations in vegetation cover. The mentioned results indicated that revegetation performed a critical function in the variations of runoff and sediment at the flood event scale. This study revealed the variations of runoff-sediment processes of flood events and their responses to rainfall and revegetation in a typical catchment of the Loess Plateau, which can provide a basis for decision-making on soil erosion management and sustainable development of the ecological environment in the Loess Plateau. Particle morphology is an important feature of sediments that reflects their transport history and depositional environment. In this study, we used dynamic image analysis (DIA) to measure the size and shape of beach sediments on the east and west coasts of Hainan Island in South China Sea. DIA is a fast and accurate method that can capture and analyze a large number of sediment particles in real-time. We extracted morphological descriptors of each particle, such as equivalent diameter, sphericity, aspect ratio and symmetry, and their distributions based on volume and number. We performed multivariate analysis on the particle morphological data, including alpha diversity, statistical analysis and fingerprint techniques. We found that the Shannon index, calculated by the number distribution of sediment particle morphology, can effectively discriminate between the two sites, reflecting different sediment sources, transport processes and depositional conditions. We also established a composite fingerprint based on seven morphological parameters and diversity indices, which can accurately distinguish between aeolian and hydraulic sedimentary environments. Our study demonstrates the potential application of DIA in identifying sedimentary environments and establishing sediment fingerprints. This paper uses the finite-volume community ocean model (FVCOM) coupled with the simulating waves nearshore (SWAN) in a wave–current–sediment model to simulate the tidal current field, wave field, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) field in the sea area near Weifang Port, China. The three-dimensional water-and-sediment model was modified by introducing a sediment-settling-velocity formula that considers the effect of gradation. Next, the SSCs calculated by the original and modified models were compared with the measured data. The SSCs calculated by the modified model were closer to the measured data, as evidenced by the smaller mean relative error and root-mean-square error. The results show that the modified coupled wave–current–sediment model can reasonably describe the hydrodynamic characteristics and sediment movement in the sea area near Weifang Port, and the nearshore SSCs calculated by the modified model were higher than those calculated by the original model. Groundwater potential mapping is an important prerequisite for evaluating the exploitation, utilization, and recharge of groundwater. The study uses BFT (best-first decision tree classifier), CART (classification and regression tree), FT (functional trees), EBF (evidential belief function) benchmark models, and RF-BFTree, RF-CART, and RF-FT ensemble models to map the groundwater potential of Wuqi County, China. Firstly, select sixteen groundwater spring-related variables, such as altitude, plan curvature, profile curvature, curvature, slope angle, slope aspect, stream power index, topographic wetness index, stream sediment transport index, normalized difference vegetation index, land use, soil, lithology, distance to roads, distance to rivers, and rainfall, and make a correlation analysis of these sixteen groundwater spring-related variables. Secondly, optimize the parameters of the seven models and select the optimal parameters for groundwater modeling in Wuqi County. The predictive performance of each model was evaluated by estimating the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and statistical index (accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity). The results show that the seven models have good predictive capabilities, and the ensemble model has a larger AUC value. Among them, the RF-BFT model has the highest success rate (AUC = 0.911), followed by RF-FT (0.898), RF-CART (0.894), FT (0.852), EBF (0.824), CART (0.801), and BFtree (0.784), respectively. Groundwater potential maps of these 7 models were obtained, and four different classification methods (geometric interval, natural breaks, quantile, and equal interval) were used to reclassify the obtained GPM into 5 categories: very low (VLC), low (LC), moderate (MC), high (HC), and very high (VHC). The results show that the natural breaks method has the best classification performance, and the RF-BFT model is the most reliable. Sediment transport in coastal waters has an important impact on the siltation of port channels and changes in the estuary ecological environment. The southeast coast of China is often hit by typhoons, which can affect the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in coastal waters. In this study, we used Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data to analyze SSC variations in Hangzhou Bay during Typhoon Maria (2018), and the influencing factors were also analyzed. The results showed that: (1) During the typhoon's transit, the SSC in Hangzhou Bay (HZB) increased by 200–800 mg/L, which was one-fold higher than the day before the typhoon. The variation of SSC on the south bank was noticeable, and the typhoon effect on SSC lasted for 2–3 days; (2) The wind speed and significant wave height (SWH) increased during the typhoon. In general, in the early stage of the typhoon, the SSC in HZB was affected by the wind, and in the interim and late period, SSC was influenced by the effect of wind and wave height; (3) Typhoon "Maria" accelerated the transport of sediment and land-based pollutants from land to sea; the effect of residual current and wind stress are the driving mechanisms for seaward sediment transport. However, mechanisms and driving factors of sediment transport in coast water are complex and diverse. The results of this study can help to understand the processes of riverbed erosion and deposition in Hangzhou Bay and adjacent waters. The Yellow River has long been known for having low water and abundant sediment. The amount of sediment transported in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River (UMRYR) has changed significantly in recent years, resulting in an obvious imbalance in the spatiotemporal distribution of the water resources in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). The changes in the sediment transport in the Yellow River significantly affect ecological security and socioeconomic development in the YRB. In this study, the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform was used to obtain the potential driving factors influencing the five main gauge stations in the UMRYR: vegetation, soil moisture, population, precipitation, land types, etc. The data on the annual sediment transport (AST) were from the River Sediment Bulletin of China (2001~2020). Linear regression and the Mann–Kendall test were used to study the temporal variation in the AST. The first-order difference was determined from the original data to remove the autocorrelation, and it met the requirement of sample independence. The factors without collinearity were used for the driving force analysis using linear regression (linear model) and random forest regression (nonlinear model). We used the selected driving factors to establish the linear regression, the random forest model for predicting the AST, and cross-validation for verifying the prediction accuracy. Furthermore, the prediction outcomes were compared with the simplest ARIMA time-series model (control model). Our findings showed that the changing trend and the mutation of the AST were different in the UMRYR during the past 20 years. However, after the first-order difference of the AST, the amount of interannual variation in the annual sediment transport (ΔAST) was almost unchanged in the UMRYR. The five driving factors were chosen to establish the prediction models of linear regression and random forest regression, respectively. Through a field experiment on a sandy beach at Pingtan, China, we propose the first model to characterize the variability of apparent von Kármán parameter κa ${\kappa }_{a}$ in the thermally and sedimentologically stratified air flows. The model shows that κa ${\kappa }_{a}$ is negatively correlated to flux Richardson number as well as sediment transport rate. The atmospheric stability can be either from thermal stratification or sedimentological stratification, neglecting either of them can lead to substantial errors in predicting shear velocity and sediment transport rate. Plain Language Summary: In natural conditions, atmospheric boundary layer flows are often non‐neutral due to thermal stratification. However, recent studies indicate sedimentological stratification may also have a similar effect while almost no research was conducted to examine their combined effect on the flows. In an estuary, stratification processes play a major role in inhibiting estuarine circulation, sediment transport, and the estuarine ecosystem. A detailed examination of the salinity stratification through the gradient Richardson number and the potential energy anomaly equation has been undertaken along the West Channel of the Pearl River Estuary, China. The results show that the estuarine circulation within the West Channel is much weaker on a spring tide than that on a neap tide, exhibiting apparent spring–neap tidal variability. The calculated gradient Richardson number displays its intratidal and spring–neap tidal variability within the West Channel, indicating the existence of intratidal and spring–neap tidal variability of stratification. In addition, the tidally averaged change rate of total potential energy anomaly within the West Channel suggests more than a 4.53 × 10−3 W·m−3 increase from spring to neap tides, demonstrating strong stratification on a neap tide. The longitudinal advection and the longitudinal depth-mean straining are the leading physical mechanisms contributing to intratidal and spring–neap variability of salinity stratification within the West Channel. The worldwide problem of reservoir sedimentation has perplexed the water conservancy industry. The problem of reservoir sedimentation is particularly serious in sandy rivers in China and directly affects the normal function of reservoirs. Due to its effect on the economy and environmental protection, the self-priming pipeline dredging and sediment discharge technology has broad application prospects. Nevertheless, there are pressing problems in the transportation of slurry particles in the pipeline system of this new technology. The purpose of this study is to use physical model tests to analyze the influence of the sediment transport rate and pipeline velocity on the motion state of particles (aggregation transport, jump transport, and suspension transport) when a heterogeneous flow with different particle sizes is transported in the pipeline. The results indicate that under the same pipeline velocity and sediment transport rate, the thickness of the static particle accumulation layer decreases with the increase in particle size in the state of aggregation and transportation, and the smaller the particle size, the greater the particle movement speed in the case of aggregation and suspension transportation. During jump transportation, the velocity of particles above the critical inflection point Y' increases with the decrease in particle size. The opposite is found below the critical inflection point Y'. At the same particle size and sediment transport rate, when the pipeline velocity increases, the particle transport transits from aggregation transport to jump transport and then to suspension transport. The larger the pipeline velocity, the greater the overall movement speed of particles. When gathering and conveying, if the pipeline flow rate increases by 1.5, the maximum movement speed of particles increases by 3.3. The curvature of the vertical velocity curve of the particles during jump transportation is not affected by the pipeline velocity. The particle velocity at the highest point increases with the increase in the pipeline velocity. During suspension transportation, the difference between the maximum and minimum vertical particle distribution velocities is exponentially related to the pipeline velocity. In the headcut erosion process, flow energy is transformed and consumed when runoff is used to transport sediment. Therefore, flow energy variations are critical in the study of headcut erosion. The aim of this study was to illustrate the effects of the upslope inflow discharge and slope gradient on flow energy and the response of the sediment yield of headcut erosion to flow energy variations in China's Loess Plateau. This study examined the headcut erosion using slope gradients ranging from 1° to 7° and designed and upslope inflow discharges of 3.6, 4.8, 6.0 and 7.2 m3·h−1. The rainfall intensity was set as invariable 0.8 mm·min−1. The results showed that the kinetic energy at the downstream gully bed was 0.03~0.16 J·s−1 lower than that in the upstream catchment area because of the concentrated flow drop at the gully head. The potential energy at the summit and bottom of the plot were both affected by upstream inflow discharge and slope gradient. The flow energy consumption values of the gully head increased by approximately 1.26 times as the inflow discharge increased by 1.2 m3·h−1. Greater energy consumption occurred at the gully head than in the upstream catchment area and downstream gully bed, and the gully head contribution to the flow energy consumption was 44.30~64.29%, which showed an increasing trend as the upslope inflow discharge increased and slope gradient decreased. The influence of the slope gradient on the sediment yield was stronger than that of the upslope inflow discharge, and a nonlinear regression equation was established to calculate the sediment yield. The flow energy consumption showed a significant correlation with the sediment yield (p < 0.01). Our results could enhance the understanding of the flow energy variations and headcut evolution process during headcut erosion and can also be helpful in the design of gully erosion prevention measures. Marsh creeks are perceived as important conduits for transporting water and sediment between mudflats and marshes. In order to advance the understanding of the transport mechanisms in creeks, the source and ultimate sink of sediment which moves between mudflats and marshes through creek channels need further investigation. Therefore, two field campaigns were conducted in two intertidal systems with varying sediment availability. The water depth, flow velocity, suspended sediment concentration, and bed level change were measured simultaneously in a marsh creek and on the adjacent mudflat in Chongming Island (China) and in Paulina Saltmarsh (the Netherlands). Paulina Saltmarsh is much smaller, more frequently flooded, and has lower sediment concentration than Chongming. These contrasting conditions allow for a comparison of transport mechanisms and functioning of the creek. Both systems first show that the high suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measured in marsh creeks is mainly the consequence of sediment advection rather than local erosion. In addition, erosion in marsh creeks is usually limited during ebb tides, reducing the export of sediment through these creeks. However, differences have been observed between two systems. The measured SSC was highly asymmetric between flood and ebb tides in Chongming. Large peaks in SSC during the flood period can be observed for most tidal cycles. The marsh creeks in Chongming therefore function as conduits for sediment import. Additionally, there are distinct overbank and underbank tides in Chongming. Sediment was trapped and retained in creeks during underbank tides, which can then be eroded and transported to the marsh during subsequent overbank tides. We also observed that mudflats in Chongming quickly recovered after erosion. These mechanisms have not been observed in Paulina Saltmarsh, where net sediment export via the marsh creek was observed due to a lack of abundant sediment in suspension during flood tides. Furthermore, the remaining bed surface of mudflats after an erosion event was stronger than before, limiting further erosion in Paulina Saltmarsh. This paper is concerned with the development of a radionuclide dispersion model for the nuclear power plants in the Bohai, Yellow, and East China seas (BYECS) characterized by high turbidity and multi-scale circulations, focusing on the comparison of dispersion processes of 137Cs depending upon, in particular, the suspended sediment concentration and erosion/sedimentation processes. The simulations were carried out using a multi-fraction sediment transport model embedded in the semi-implicit Eulerian–Lagrangian finite-element coupled wave-circulation model linked with the model of radionuclide transport, which describes the key radionuclide transfer processes in the system of water–multi-fraction sediments. In contrast to the Eulerian models used for hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes, the Lagrangian technique was applied to simulate the transport of radionuclides. The simulation results for total suspended concentration agreed with in situ measurements and the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager data. The results of the simulation of hypothetical releases of 137Cs from four nuclear power plants (NPPs) placed in BYECS essentially differ from the real release of activity in the Pacific Ocean shelf due to the Fukushima Daiichi accident, which took place at the same time and released activity that was similar. The total amount of bottom contamination of 137Cs in releases from the Sanmen, Hanbit, and Hongyanhe NPPs was about 40% of dissolved component, and the total amount of suspended component was about 20% of dissolved component, in contrast with the Fukushima Daiichi accident, where the particulate component was only 2%. The results demonstrate the importance of erosion processes in the budget of 137Cs in shallow areas around the Sanmen and Hanbit NPPs, where strong wind and tidal currents took place. Downdrift shoreline recession associated with the construction of a shore-crossing hard structure represents one of coastal erosional hotspots that must be addressed for an integrated, sustainable coastal zone management. To prevent siltation within the navigation channel, two rubber-mounted jetties were installed at the Sheyang River mouth on the open mesotidal muddy coast in Jiangsu province, China, in October 2013. The north jetty is 7.9 km long, while the south jetty is 7.8 km long. The net longshore sediment transport is from the north to the south due to flood-tide dominance. As disclosed by high-resolution satellite images, a 36-km-long downdrift shoreline stretch had experienced remarkable retreats at alongshore varying rates by March 2019. The eroding shoreline planform does not resemble a classic "S" shape, a crescentic shape, or a parabolic shape but an irregularly indented curved shape. Transect topographic survey also reveals an almost immediate response of the downdrift coast from the original accretionary scenery to an erosional regime, with the erosion front translocating downcoast at a much faster speed than a normal speed of 1–1.5 km/yr. Using FVCOM and SWAN, 2DH process-based numerical simulations are performed to simulate the flow, the sediment transport, and the yearly-magnitude accretion/erosion distribution in the jetty-affected area by a representative tidal force and an annual-magnitude wave force. The results demonstrate that the reciprocal tidal flow is predominantly responsible for the muddy sediment accretions at downdrift intertidal and surf zones shallower than a 4.0-m isobath, whereas big wind waves play a decisive role in triggering and developing the downdrift erosional process. The predicted spatial extent of the downdrift erosional segment matches closely the actual eroding front. The loss of the net annual longshore sediment transport volume, i.e., 3.08 million m3 due to the blockage by the twin jetties is recovered from a much larger spatial extent than the 36-km-long retreating shoreline stretch. With regard to the Bruun model, the one-line model, the headland-bay model, and the 2DH numerical model, the potential maximum recession length and the planform shape of the downdrift erosional shoreline arc are further elaborated to gain new insights into the spatial and temporal impact of a hard structure on the adjacent shoreline and flat (beach). Scour around a circular monopile in coastal regions has been investigated extensively over the past decades, but the time development of scour depth around an offshore-wind monopile under large current–wave ratio still lacks a predictive model. By considering the conservation of sand volume and adopting the conventional exponential law for temporal variation, a semi-empirical model, which has three parameters, i.e., an equilibrium scour depth, a shape coefficient and a scour characteristic time scale, is developed for predicting the time development of scour depth around a monopile under live-bed conditions of combined wave–current flows. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted in current-only and wave–current flows to obtain data for model calibration and validation. Experimental results indicate that adding weak waves on current accelerates scour development, which is successfully captured by the proposed model through using the far-field bottom shear stress as a key model input. The overall model inaccuracy is within 25%, and the model's applicability is further confirmed by field measurements from an offshore wind farm in east China. Identifying the sources and weathering degree of sediments in the northern deserts of China is crucial to understand the evolution of the Asian monsoon system and corresponding induced changes in surface processes. Great progress has been made in the reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment from the Early Holocene onwards based on chronostratigraphy and proxies of aeolian sedimentary sequences in the Mu Us Desert (MUD). However, previous studies have given rise to some controversial over the timing of the Holocene optimum period, and there is a scarcity of studies on the sediment provenance evolution of the desert during the Holocene and its internal relationship with the East Asian summer (EASM) and winter (EAWM) monsoons. Here, we provide new elemental geochemical data from a fluvial–aeolian sedimentary sequence in the southern MUD; we then combine these data with other available elemental data and hydroclimatology information to investigate the characteristics of sediment source evolution and their possible connection with the EASM and EAWM on the southern margin of the MUD-desert/loess transition zone since the latter part of the Early-Holocene. The elemental composition and geochemical characteristics of the studied sedimentary sequence differed markedly in the periods before and after 6.4 ka BP, suggesting a change in the source of the sediments across this boundary. From the late Early-Holocene (10.6 cal. ka BP), sediments were dominated by the chemical weathering products of local source material, with a gradual increase in chemical weathering over time, indicating a gradual strengthening of the EASM; the EASM reached its peak Holocene strength at 8.4–6.4 ka BP, accompanied by a moderate level of chemical weathering. After 6.4 ka BP, with the weakening of monsoon precipitation, the EAWM began to strengthen, and long-distance transport of source material from the west and northwest increased; however, chemical weathering of local source material driven by the EASM remained dominant until 4.0 ka BP. After 4.0 ka BP, the EAWM became dominant, and sediments showed strong sedimentary cycles, mainly transported from long-distance sources by aeolian activity, and the MUD became an important sedimentary sink for the northern-central deserts. After 0.7 ka BP, the sediments in the MUD became a mixture of different-age sediments due to river scouring and the transport of pre-existing sediments along the shoreline. Collectively, the elemental geochemical and other proxy data from Holocene sediments on the southern margin of the MUD record an inverse relationship between the EASM and EAWM; these two monsoonal circulations have alternated in their control of the sedimentary source characteristics and geomorphological environmental evolution processes across the southern margin of the MUD during the Holocene. Researchers have extensively investigated the back-barrier islands morphodynamics using numerical methods. However, the influence of rocky mouth islands, which may be submerged by sea-level rise, has been rarely explored. Using the Dongshan Bay in southern China as a reference, this study numerically explores the long-term morphodynamic effect of geological constraints (e.g. rocky islands) for back-barrier basins. Model results indicate that the spatial configuration of mouth islands can considerably affect the morphological development of tidal basins. The presence of mouth islands narrows the inlet cross-sectional area, increasing flow velocity and residual current, resulting in more sediment suspension and transport. Meanwhile, mouth islands tend to increase erosion in the tidal basin and sedimentation in the ebb-delta area. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of mouth islands can also affect tidal basin evolution: the basin-side mouth islands tend to cause more basin erosion with higher tidal currents and more sediment transport. In contrast, the delta-side ones may increase relative sediment deposition in the basin. Finally, larger tidal prisms are observed with more mouth islands and with basin-side mouth islands, suggesting that the number and location of islands can affect the relationship between the tidal prism and inlet cross-sectional area. The Huangmaohai estuary (HE) is a funnel-shaped microtidal estuary in the west of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China. Since China reformed and opened up in 1978, extensive human activities have occurred and greatly changed the estuary's topography and modified its hydrodynamics. In this study, we examined the morphological evolution by analyzing remote sensing data with ArcGIS tools and studied the responses of hydrodynamics to the changes in topography from 1977 to 2010 by using the Delft3D model. We took the changes in estuarine circulation during neap tides in dry seasons as an example. The results show that human reclamation caused a narrowing of the estuary, and channel dredging deepened the estuary. These human activities changed both the longitudinal and lateral estuarine circulations. The longitudinal circulation was observed to increase with the deepening and narrowing of the estuary. The lateral circulation experienced changes in both the magnitude and pattern. The momentum balance analysis shows that when the depth and width changed simultaneously, the longitudinal estuarine circulation was modulated by both the channel deepening and width reduction, in which the friction, pressure gradient force, and advection terms were altered. The analysis of the longitudinal vortex dynamics indicates that the changes in the vertical shear of the longitudinal flow, lateral salinity gradient, and vertical mixing were responsible for the change in the lateral circulation. The changes in water depth are the dominant factors affecting lateral circulation intensity. Two sections of the Xintiangou Formation were examined in the Yunyang area, Northeastern Sichuan Basin, China. One of them was systematically sampled from bottom to top. Palynology and geochemistry analyses were performed on 20 samples, and Paleoclimatic indicators were extracted. The sporopollen assemblage indicates arid and hot paleoclimate as a whole, and the geochemical index shows hot and humid paleoclimate. Combined with the analysis of sedimentary characteristics, it shows that the sedimentary period of the Xintiangou Formation in the study area is characterized by arid and hot paleoclimate as a whole, and there were fluctuations of relative moist and arid. The humid climate recorded by geochemical indicators may be the illusion that the unconsolidated sediments transported to the shore shallow lake zone experienced strong weathering. When studying the palaeoclimate characteristics of continental basins, it is necessary to analyze all kinds of palaeoclimate proxy indexes in combination with sedimentary facies, and there may be a deviation in using a single palaeoclimate proxy index to invert the palaeoclimate of continental basins. Fly ash--the residuum of coal burning--contains a considerable amount of fossilized particulate organic carbon (FOCash) that remains after high-temperature combustion. Fly ash leaks into natural environments and participates in the contemporary carbon cycle, but its reactivity and flux remained poorly understood. We characterized FOCash in the Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) basin, China, and quantified the riverine FOCash fluxes. Using Raman spectral analysis, ramped pyrolysis oxidation, and chemical oxidation, we found that FOCash is highly recalcitrant and unreactive, whereas shale-derived FOC (FOCrock) was much more labile and easily oxidized. By combining mass balance calculations and other estimates of fly ash input to rivers, we estimated that the flux of FOCash carried by the Chang Jiang was 0.21 to 0.42 Mt C·y-1 in 2007 to 2008--an amount equivalent to 37 to 72% of the total riverine FOC export. We attributed such high flux to the combination of increasing coal combustion that enhances FOCash production and the massive construction of dams in the basin that reduces the flux of FOCrock eroded from upstream mountainous areas. Using global ash data, a first-order estimate suggests that FOCash makes up to 16% of the present-day global riverine FOC flux to the oceans. This reflects a substantial impact of anthropogenic activities on the fluxes and burial of fossil organic carbon that has beenmade less reactive than the rocks from which it was derived. Modern dune fields are valuable sources of information for the large-scale analysis of terrestrial and planetary environments and atmospheres, but their study relies on understanding the small-scale dynamics that constantly generate new dunes and reshape older ones. Here, we designed a landscape-scale experiment at the edge of the Gobi desert, China, to quantify the development of incipient dunes under the natural action of winds. High-resolution topographic data documenting 42 mo of bedform dynamics are examined to provide a spectral analysis of dune pattern formation. We identified two successive phases in the process of dune growth, from the initial flat sand bed to a meterhigh periodic pattern. We focus on the initial phase, when the linear regime of dune instability applies, and measure the growth rate of dunes of different wavelengths. We identify the existence of a maximum growth rate, which readily explains the mechanism by which dunes select their size, leading to the prevalence of a 15-m wavelength pattern. We quantitatively compare our experimental results with the prediction of the dune instability theory using transport and flow parameters independently measured in the field. The remarkable agreement between theory and observations demonstrates that the linear regime of dune growth is permanently expressed on low-amplitude bed topography, before larger regular patterns and slip faces eventually emerge. Our experiment underpins existing theoretical models for the early development of eolian dunes, which can now be used to provide reliable insights into atmospheric and surface processes on Earth and other planetary bodies. Ecosystems respond to climatic and anthropogenic forcings with regime shifts and reorganizations of their system structures. In river basins, changes in sediment transport can have cascading effects that cause ecosystem regime shifts. The Yellow River, once the world's most sediment-rich river, has experienced dramatic regime shifts. Although recent intervention has returned sediment discharge in the Yellow River to pristine levels, our understanding of previous regime shifts remains inadequate, particularly for the regime shift to a sediment rich period during early historical time. We reanalyzed previous datasets to clarify the first historical sediment transport regime shift in the Yellow River. Our results show that while historical climatic changes (e.g., the Medieval Warm Period, about 900–1100 AD) caused changes in sediment transport, a regime shift occurred only under increased forcing from anthropogenic stresses (started from about 1350 AD, reached the tipping point after 1900 AD). Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, is distinguished by complicated suspended sediment (SS) dynamics. Apart from lake currents, wind is an important form of natural disturbance in driving SS transport. Combining field data, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations, we gained valuable insight into wind impacts on SS dynamics in Poyang Lake. (1) Lake current patterns exert great influence on the level of wind impacts. Due to reduced sediment carrying capacity, SS under weak current suffers from stronger wind influence than under strong currents. (2) Wind speed determines the degree of wind impact, not only affecting horizontal SS transport, but also regulating vertical dynamics. Winds exceeding critical intensity can enhance horizontal transport through both surface drift and Stokes drift at different water depths, triggering sediment suspension to feed the loads in overlying water. (3) Wind impact is influenced by lake morphology. The broad water surface in the central lake permits formation of continuous waves, leading to the largest SS fluctuation, from -10.05 mg·L-1 to +20.17 mg·L-1, while average variation in the south and north part of the lake is only -6.59 mg·L-1 to þ10.36 mg·L-1. This study explored the sedimentary characteristics, dispersal patterns, and pathway formation in Liaodong Bay Depression, as well as their controlling factors. We selected more than 10 pathways with north‐west and north‐east directions in Liaoxi Sag in the western part of Liaodong Bay Depression, a typical strike‐slip bet controlled graben, to investigate their S2S system distribution. By combining seismic data, we divided the strike‐slip fault bends into three stress setting parts, namely, a central restraining bend, which is the fault translation part, and two releasing bends in the southern and northern of fault terminals. As the heavy mineral assemblage and clay content in the west side of Liaoxi Sag differs from that in the east side, we put forward an S2S index to show the sediment transport distance according to the data we have obtained. Using this index, we recovered the dispersal pattern and pathway development and speculated on the sedimentary provenance. In the restraining bend, we recognized that the pathways mainly show a symmetrical "V" or "W" shape with unclear erosion boundaries and were dominated by filling processes. Considering the heavy mineral assemblage data, we also found that the sediment provenance area decreased and the sediment provided direction transferred from the two‐side provenance to one. Combining the fast sedimentary rate calculated with clay content data, the S2S systems in this area were steep–wide–deep systems and a wide and shallow system. In the releasing bend, the pathways show an asymmetrical "V" or "W" shape and a clear erosional boundary. As shown by the heavy mineral assemblage data, the sediments from these areas mainly have a west side provenance and were deposited in the proximal area. Thus, the S2S system in this area is a kind of steep–deep system. Then, the investigation by integrated of tectonic movement and S2S geomorphic statistical parameters revealed that the elevation height of the S2S is a key factor in control pattern development. Deep‐water deposits in marine basins have recently received considerable research attention. However, the controls of sediment transported to deep‐lacustrine environments are comparatively understudied. In this study, we utilize field‐based outcrop data to investigate the variability of sediment distribution and its controlling factors in the Lower Cretaceous synrift Xiguayuan Formation in the Luanping Basin. Two fan‐delta systems with variability dominate the measured outcrop sections. At the lithological scale, the ratio of conglomerate to strata in the Xiyuan fan‐delta system is 87%, and the average thickness of individual coarse‐grained layers is ~1 m; the corresponding values in the Caoying fan‐delta system are 52% and 0.4 m. In addition, sand‐rich gravity‐flow deposits are developed in front of the Xiyuan fan delta, whereas mud‐rich mass transport deposits (i.e., sliding block and slumping debris) are found in front of the Caoying fan delta. At the stratigraphical scale, a delta succession in the Xiyuan section characterized by sand‐rich facies from proximal to distal parts is developed in a relatively steep slope setting. In the Caoying section, however, a delta succession characterized by sand‐rich facies in the proximal to middle parts is found in addition to a mud‐rich distal part developed in a gentle slope setting. Differential sediment supply resulted in significant variation in the sediment distribution pattern. In particular, the grain size of the fan‐delta front controls that of the deep‐lacustrine gravity‐flow deposits fed by them. Fine-grained sediment (grain size under 2,000 µm) builds floodplains and deltas, and shapes the coastlines where much of humanity lives. However, a universal, physically based predictor of sediment flux for fine-grained rivers remains to be developed. Herein, a comprehensive sediment load database for fine-grained channels, ranging from small experimental flumes to megarivers, is used to find a predictive algorithm. Two distinct transport regimes emerge, separated by a discontinuous transition for median bed grain size within the very fine sand range (81 to 154 µm), whereby sediment flux decreases by up to 100-fold for coarser sand-bedded rivers compared to river with silt and very fine sand beds. Evidence suggests that the discontinuous change in sediment load originates from a transition of transport mode betweenmixed suspended bed load transport and suspensiondominated transport. Events that alter bed sediment size near the transition may significantly affect fluviocoastal morphology by drastically changing sediment flux, as shown by data from the Yellow River, China, which, over time, transitioned back and forth 3 times between states of high and low transport efficiency in response to anthropic activities. The main object of this study is to introduce hybrid integration approaches that consist of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence algorithms (SysFor) and two bivariate models, namely the frequency ratio (FR) and index of entropy (IoE), to carry out landslide spatial prediction research. Hybrid integration approaches of these two bivariate models and logistic regression (LR) were used as benchmark models. Nanzheng County was considered as the study area. First, a landslide distribution map was produced using news reports, interpreting satellite images and a regional survey. A total of 202 landslides were identified and marked. According to the previous studies and local geological environment conditions, 16 landslide conditioning factors were chosen for landslide spatial prediction research: elevation, profile curvature, plan curvature, slope angle, slope aspect, stream power index (SPI), topographic wetness index (TWI), sediment transport index (STI), distance to roads, distance to rivers, distance to faults, lithology, rainfall, soil, normalized different vegetation index (NDVI), and land use. Then, the 202 landslides were randomly segmented into two parts with a ratio of 70:30. Seventy percent of the landslides (141) were used as the training dataset and the remaining landslides (61) were used as the validating dataset. Next, the evaluation models were built using the training dataset and compared by the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve. The results showed that all models performed well; the FR_SysFor model exhibited the best prediction ability (0.831), followed by the IoE_SysFor model (0.819), IoE_LR model (0.702), FR_LR model (0.696), IoE model (0.691), and FR model (0.681). Overall, these six models are practical tools for landslide spatial prediction research and the results can provide a reference for landslide prevention and control in the study area. Flooding is one of the most significant environmental challenges and can easily cause fatal incidents and economic losses. Flood reduction is costly and time-consuming task; so it is necessary to accurately detect flood susceptible areas. This work presents an effective flood susceptibility mapping framework by involving an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) with two metaheuristic methods of biogeography based optimization (BBO) and imperialistic competitive algorithm (ICA). A total of 13 flood influencing factors, including slope, altitude, aspect, curvature, topographic wetness index, stream power index, sediment transport index, distance to river, landuse, normalized difference vegetation index, lithology, rainfall and soil type, were used in the proposed framework for spatial modeling and Dingnan County in China was selected for the application of the proposed methods due to data availability. There are 115 flood occurrences in the study area which were randomly separated into training (70% of the total) and verification (30%) sets. To perform the proposed framework, the step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis algorithm is first used to evaluate the correlation between influencing factors and floods. Then, two ensemble methods of ANFIS-BBO and ANFIS-ICA are constructed for spatial prediction and producing flood susceptibility maps. Finally, these resultant maps are assessed in terms of several statistical and error measures, including receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the ROC curve (AUC), root-mean-square error (RMSE). The experimental results demonstrated that the two ensemble methods were more effective than ANFIS in the study area. For instance, the predictive AUC values of 0.8407, 0.9045 and 0.9044 were achieved by the methods of ANFIS, ANFIS-BBO and ANFIS-ICA, respectively. Moreover, the RMSE values for ANFIS, ANFIS-BBO and ANFIS-ICA using the verification set were 0.3100, 0.2730 and 0.2700, respectively. In addition, as regards ANFIS-BBO and ANFIS-ICA, a total areas of 39.30% and 35.39% were classified as highly susceptible to flooding. Human activities and climate are two key factors affecting hydrological and soil erosion processes. Understanding their impacts on water discharge and sediment transport is very important for sustainable development of watersheds, particularly in subtropical regions with high precipitation and high sediment loads. We here compared the long-term dynamics of water discharge and sediment transport in four large contiguous watersheds in subtropical China and explored the importance of the main influencing factors including climate, nature endowment such as geology, and human activities. Significant differences have been observed between watersheds in terms of sediment and water discharge (p < 0.001). Pairwise comparison among the four basins demonstrated significant differences in sediment modulus among 5 of the 6 pairs (p < 0.05). The sediment modulus in the Lishui Basin was significantly higher than those in other basins, mainly due to the substantial presence of steep slopes in the mountainous region, which is prone to soil erosion. Temporally, sediment transport in the four basins was well synchronized showing significant decreasing trends with abrupt change points (p < 0.001). In contrast, no trends and abrupt change points were detected in water discharge, mainly influenced by precipitation. Human activities played a predominant role to the reduction of sediment transport (80% to 102%) compared with those of climate (-2% to 19%) across the four basins. Additionally, our study also showed land cover had various basin-independent impacts on the change of sediment transport. Through cross-basin comparisons of the long-term changes in water discharge and sediment transport, our study revealed the similarities and differences in their driving mechanisms, providing valuable information for land use planning and water resource management in large subtropical basins. Floodplain deposition can provide important historical information about river systems. 137Cs tracer measurement is the most widely used technique for studying floodplain deposition. One-time sampling is normally used to date or estimate erosion and deposition rates, while time-interval sampling has rarely been applied. Northeast China is an important grain production area characterized by intense erosion and a low sediment transport ratio. Most studies of the region have focused on slope sedimentation, while floodplain sedimentation has received little attention. In this study, two-time steps of cross-sectional sediment core sample collection were performed to examine the floodplain sedimentation in the river basin of the Laolai River, a tributary of the Songhua River. The potential for using 137Cs to estimate the sediment deposition rate for a given time-interval was also investigated. A total of 18 cross-sections were acquired, and three repeated cross-sections were selected for double sampling. Significant differences were observed between the results obtained from the samples collected in separate rounds, suggesting the presence of internal heterogeneity during floodplain sedimentation and a significant influence of sampling positions on the analysis results. In the basin examined, sedimentation often occurs midstream, upstream, and at the outlet, and was mainly affected by topography, reservoir construction, and land use. Sedimentation occurs easily at wide, flat outlets or river intersections in braided water systems. It was observed that downstream floodplain sedimentation was increased by sediment interception by upstream reservoirs, but reduced by forests near floodplains. Sedimentation rates were significantly different between the 1954 and 1963 time markers, and we found that using rates from 1954 alone would lead to underestimation. When 137Cs sedimentation and floodplain distribution are used to determine flooding occurrence, variations in 137Cs content and particle size distribution should be considered. River bank erosion in this region should be taken into account, and riparian protection is required to reduce erosion and floodplain deposition. Globally, and in China, landslides constitute one of the most important and frequently encountered natural hazard events. In the present study, landslide susceptibility evaluation was undertaken using novel ensembles of bivariate statistical-methods-based (evidential belief function (EBF), statistical index (SI), and weights of evidence (WoE)) kernel logistic regression machine learning classifiers. A landslide inventory comprising 222 landslides and 15 conditioning factors (slope angle, slope aspect, altitude, plan curvature, profile curvature, stream power index, sediment transport index, topographic wetness index, distance to rivers, distance to roads, distance to faults, NDVI, land use, lithology, and rainfall) was prepared as the spatial database. Correlation analysis and selection of conditioning factors were conducted using multicollinearity analysis and classifier attribute evaluation methods, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic curve method was used to validate the models. The areas under the success rate (AUC_T) and prediction rate (AUC_P) curves and landslide density analysis were also used to assess the prediction capability of the landslide susceptibility maps. Results showed that the EBF-KLR hybrid model had the highest predictive capability in landslide susceptibility assessment (AUC values of 0.814 and 0.753 for the training and validation datasets, respectively; AUC_T value of 0.8511 and AUC_P value of 0.7615), followed in descending order by the SI-KLR and WoE-KLR hybrid models. These findings indicate that hybrid models could improve the predictive capability of bivariate models, and that the EBF-KLR is a promising hybrid model for the spatial prediction of landslides in susceptible areas. Mangrove forest responses to sea-level rise (SLR) are likely misestimated in many studies because current assessment methods often assume a constant rate of surface elevation change along the intertidal profile. Most studies also neglect the ecogeomorphic feedback process known to accelerate soil building with SLR. Here, an empirical, dynamic model that accounts for the above processes is constructed for the intertidal zone of a mangrove bay in Hainan, China. The model allows us to explore the response of a tide-dominated mangrove forest to different rates of SLR. Rod surface elevation table-marker horizon (RSET-MH) data (2015–2018) indicate rather high rates of surface accretion (13.3–57.9 mm yr−1) and surface elevation changes (7.9–35.5 mm yr−1). Surface accretion and surface elevation change decreased exponentially with increasing ground elevation. Our model showed that SLR (at rates of 4 and 16 mm yr−1) would not lead to the loss of mangrove cover but that it could alter mangrove species zonation along the intertidal profile by 2100 due to a rich sediment supply and ecogeomorphic feedback. Importantly, rapid SLR and landward barriers can pose a considerable threat to the high-intertidal community by causing increased inundation of the high-intertidal zone, subsequent shifts in species zones, and the loss of mangrove biological and structural diversity along the intertidal profile. Overall, this study predicts probabilities of habitat suitability for mangrove species under SLR and expands our current understanding of the impacts of SLR on tide-dominated mangrove forests in sediment-rich systems. Incorporation of extensive, long-term RSET data into this kind of dynamic model could contribute to the better prediction of mangrove responses to SLR at large scales in the future. Abstract Oospores of Cryptosporidium , a waterborne pathogen of great concern, are widely distributed in surface waters in China and pose a threat to human health. This study seeks to explore the spatio-temporal patterns of Cryptosporidium concentrations. We focus on the Daning River watershed (4166 km2) of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGR) during the period 2008 to 2013 and use the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model to test two mitigation scenarios. Based on data on animal husbandry, population, agriculture and WWTPs (wastewater treatment plants), Cryptosporidium transport in the Daning River watershed was simulated using a calibrated hydrological and sediment transport model. Our model results showed that the average annual concentration of oocysts in the whole watershed was 9.5 oocysts/10L, but high spatial variability occurred, ranging from 0.7 to 33.4 oocysts/10L. Highest monthly mean oocysts concentrations at the outlets of the sub-basins were found at high runoff and high fertilization or at the lowest flow, while minimum monthly mean oocysts concentrations were recorded at high runoff only. A model parameter sensitivity analysis showed that the Cryptosporidium soil partitioning coefficient (BACTKDQ) and the temperature adjustment factor for Cryptosporidium die-off (THBACT) were the only two sensitive parameters among the microbial parameters. The construction of multiple WWTPs throughout the watershed and composting of 50% of the feces from rural citizens and livestock up to 56 days before its application as fertilizer could significantly reduce the concentration of oocysts. Our Cryptosporidium transport model and simulation results may assist in the establishment of better pollution control countermeasures in the Daning River and other similar watersheds. Abstract Massive bed degradation (20 m in 7 years) has been observed in the Shi‑ting River, Sichuan Province, China, since the 2008 Wenchuan Ms. 8.0 earthquake. The reason for the massive bed degradation has not been well understood. A hypothesis has been proposed that relates bed degradation to the augmentation of sand supply after the earthquake. The effect of sand on gravel mobility (magic sand effect) has long been observed in laboratory experiments. In this paper, we study whether the augmentation of sand supply and its magic sand effect can lead to the observed massive degradation at decadal scales. A one-dimensional river morphodynamic model is implemented to study the problem in general at field scale and in context of the gravel-bed Shi‑ting River. Sediment transport is calculated with the Wilcock and Crowe (2003) relation, in which the magic sand effect is explicitly embedded in terms of a function relating reference Shields number to the surface sand fraction. We find that the augmentation of gravel supply leads to bed aggradation, whereas the augmentation of sand supply can indeed lead to bed degradation and surface fining. The magnitude and timescale of bed degradation are not sensitive to the sand supply rate but are sensitive to the flood intermittency factor , i.e., the fraction of time the river is in flood. However, an unrealistic flood intermittency factor (≥0.3) would be required in order to match the observed timescale of bed degradation, thus indicating that the magic sand effect might not be the governing reason for massive bed degradation in the Shi‑ting River, and by implication in gravel-bed rivers in general. Our simulation results also indicate that despite the fact that magic sand effects are not explicitly included in most sediment transport relations, they are at least partly built in via the hiding function that is contained in most sediment transport relations for gravel-sand mixtures. While here we use the Shi‑ting River as an example, our results have applicability to gravel-bed rivers subjected to augmentation in sand supply in general. Human activities such as the rapid development of marine aquaculture in the central Jiangsu coast have had a marked impact on the tidal flat morphology. This research focuses on characterizing the spatial expansion of laver cultivation and its influence on the sedimentary evolution of tidal flats in the central Jiangsu coast. First, seasonal digital elevation models (DEMs) were established using 160 satellite images with medium resolution. Then, laver aquaculture regions were extracted from 50 time-series satellite images to calculate the area and analyze the spatial distribution and expansion of these areas. Finally, seasonal and intra-annual sedimentary evolution patterns of both aquaculture and non-aquaculture regions were determined using the constructed DEMs. Our results show that aquaculture regions have gradually expanded to the north and peripheral domains of the entire sand ridge since 1999 and by 2013, the seaward margins of each sandbank developed into dense cultivation regions. Additionally, the aquaculture regions increased from 11.99 km2 to 295.28 km2. The seasonal sedimentary evolution patterns indicate that deposition occurs during the winter and erosion during the summer. Thus, the aquaculture regions experience deposition in certain elevation intervals during the laver growing period and in the non-growing period, alluvial elevation intervals in the aquaculture regions are eroded and erosive ones are deposited in order to maintain the balance between scouring and silting. The sedimentary evolution of each sandbank is heterogeneous due to their different locations and the difference in sediment transport. The intra-annual evolution pattern is characterized by deposition in the high tidal flats and erosion in low ones. Topographic relief and bedrock fractures caused by fault activity can accelerate surface erosion, suggesting that erosion rates increase with decreasing distance to the fault core. To test this hypothesis, we used 10Be cosmogenic nuclides to quantify catchment-wide erosion rates at various distances from a fault in the footwall of the Daqing Shan fault system, a 200-km-long active normal fault in Inner Mongolia, northern China. In addition, in order to examine the influence of topography and bedrock fractures on the surface erosion processes in the fault-weakened zone, their relationships with hillslope erosion, fluvial sediment grain size and transport efficiency, erosion rates, and erosion coefficients were studied. The resulting catchment-wide erosion rates ranged from 0.01 ± 0.00–0.13 ± 0.01 mm yr−1. These erosion rates and coefficients were unaffected by distance from the fault. The analysis of topography, bedrock fractures, and hillslope erosion yielded distinct hillslope erosion processes at different distances from the fault. Rapid mass wasting events, such as landslides, occurred at <15 km from the fault in steep, rocky hillslopes with abundant bedrock fractures. In contrast, at >15 km from the fault, hillslopes gradually become more gentle and soil-mantled. These spatial-slope configuration differences result in a decrease in sediment grain size delivered to river channels with increasing distance from the fault. Once sediments enter river channels, they impact fluvial transport capacity by influencing the initial motion threshold of sediment. Correlation analyses revealed that sediment transport efficiency in channels directly controls the catchment-averaged erosion rate and coefficient. Vegetation changes have a significant impact on the runoff and sediment process of rivers in arid areas. Since 2000, the middle reaches of the Yellow River Basin have experienced rapid vegetation restoration, and the sediment transport in this area has also shown a significant decreasing trend. In this paper, we selected 10 rivers from north to south located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River as the research area, and analyzed the temporal and spatial characteristics of vegetation restoration and changes in runoff and sediment, as well as the effects of vegetation restoration on runoff and sediment process. The results show that sediment transport modulus in the middle reaches of the Yellow River are very significantly decreasing (p < 0.001), and the rate of change of the northern rivers is higher than that of the southern rivers. During the periods of 1956–1979 and 1980–1999, the sediment transport modulus showed a very significant decreasing trend from north to south (p < 0.001), but the trend of significantly decreasing the sediment transport modulus from north to south from 2000 to 2020 no longer existed (p = 0.761), after 2000, the middle reaches of the Yellow River underwent a rapid process of vegetation restoration, vegetation restoration significantly reduced the spatial heterogeneity of river sediment transport. Partial correlation analysis and sensitivity analysis show that, there was no significant correlation between vegetation restoration and runoff reduction (R2 = 0.03, p = 0.63), but there was a significant correlation between vegetation restoration and reduced sediment transport modulus (R2 = 0.49, p < 0.05), and a significant correlation between vegetation restoration and decreased sediment concentration (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.01). During the periods of 1981–1999 and 2000 - 2020, the relationship between precipitation and sediment transport modulus was positively correlated. In the 1981–1999 period, NDVI showed a weak negative correlation with sediment transport modulus but in the 2000 - 2020 period, NDVI and sediment transport modulus showed a significant negative correlation. This study provides valuable insights into the natural response of river sediment transport to vegetation restoration, and the findings are critical for soil and water conservation planning in arid area. The study of wave characteristic changes is critical for understanding the role of wave erosion in the shoreline erosion of reservoirs and its subsequent impact on environmental pollution. This study utilizes RBRvirtuoso D-wave-pressure-based wave gauges to make in situ observations of the nearshore significant wave height (SWH) in the Three Gorges Reservoir. The differential and impact factors affecting the SWH under varying water levels, in the main and tributary streams, and shoreline sections are analyzed. This research also investigates the alteration of the frequency distribution of the SWH. The findings indicate that the average SWH increases as the water level increases, reaching 1.2 cm, 1.5 cm, and 1.9 cm for water levels of 150 m, 165 m, and 175 m, respectively, with a SWH frequency distribution curve that becomes increasingly smooth. The average SWH in the mainstream is 2.9 times larger than that in the tributaries, with the former having a smoother frequency distribution curve. The average SWHs in different shoreline sections are inconsistent at the same water level, with the Badong (downstream) section near the Three Gorges Dam exhibiting a significantly higher average SWH than the Zhongxian (midstream) section further from the dam. When shipping activities intensify, there is often a marked increase in the magnitude of the SWH. The SWH in narrower reservoir sections is significantly greater than that in wider sections, with average measurements of 2.2 cm and 1.4 cm, respectively. Fluctuations of the water level, shipping activities, and other factors in the Three Gorges Reservoir have a significant impact on the alteration of the nearshore SWH, and changes in the SWH from low to high water levels may result in changes in both the spatial and temporal patterns of shoreline erosion. Accurate modelling of instantaneous sediment transport processes in coastal environments has been a great challenge for many decades. One of the difficulties comes from the existence of time lag between flow and sediment transport, termed as “the non-equilibrium transport effect”. To better understand and simulate the sediment transport processes, field observations were conducted on the middle intertidal flats of Jiangsu coast. Water depths, current velocity profiles, wave parameters, stratified suspended sediment concentrations (SSC), as well as grain sizes of both suspended sediment and bed sediment were measured. Results show that suspended sediment has an average grain size of 11.2 μm, the percentage of cohesive suspended sediment can be up to 97%. The bed load has an average grain size of 40 μm, the percentage of cohesive sediment is only 76%. The measured maximum SSC occurs at the beginning and the end of each tidal cycle. It is well-mixed during flood and ebb peak, but stratified during slack period. The vertical equilibrium SSC profiles were calculated based on the advection-diffusion theory. Calculated equilibrium SSC is well-mixed during whole tidal cycle and is controlled by the local hydrodynamics. The difference between calculated equilibrium SSC and real ones indicates that the contribution of advection is dominant. The research objective is to clarify the primary factors lead to the variations of the suspended sediment transport in the radial sand ridges (RSRs) along the Jiangsu Coast over the last 30 years. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) fields measured in several field surveys from 1980 to 2010 were analyzed. The field data indicate that the SSCs in 1980 are higher than those 2010. A two-dimensional numerical model was developed to simulate the inter-annual variations of the suspended sediment transport. Generally, the magnitude of the SSC is highly relevant with the current speed, which peaks around the Old Yellow River Delta (OYRD) and in the central RSRs. However, the northern part of the RSRs indicates higher SSC than the southern part, which is attributed to their different bed sediment composition. The net suspended sediment flux was calculated. In the north of the RSRs, the sediments are transported in the south direction, which implies a sediment input from the OYRD to the RSRs. In the south of the RSRs, a net sediment loss was observed, which is consistent with the decreasing of the sediment flux from the Yangtze River. The simulated suspended sediment transport in 1980 and 2010 mutually show similar spatial patterns, while SSCs in 1980 are overall larger than those in 2010. It is concluded that the decrease of the SSCs from 1980 to 2010 is attributed to the reduction of the OYRD and the large-scale reclamation along the Jiangsu coast, while the sediment fluxes from the Yangtze River is less important.
