China's coalbed methane (CBM) industry is in an extremely important "climbing period" and "strategic opportunity period", which can be generally characterized by "three low and one small": low degree of exploration and development, low adaptability of main technology, low return on investment and small development scale. Under the "carbon peak and neutrality" background, the development status of CBM industry is systematically combed. The resources, technology, management problems and reasons are analyzed. Strategies and countermeasures to accelerate the industrial development are put forward according to the factors such as efficient development of resources, major technical breakthrough, talent team training, policy formulation and implementation, return on investment and so on. The existing problems are as follows: (a) The overall occurrence conditions in China are complicated and the development is difficult compared with the other countries. (b) The research precision accuracy of CBM resource conditions is not enough. (c) The adaptability of technology is poor. (d) The management mode is not suitable. In view of these problems, this paper puts forward the "two steps" development strategy and the technical and management countermeasures of "five in one". The corresponding "five in one" technology and management countermeasures are the formulation and implementation of relevant safeguard measures in accordance with the principle of collaborative innovation in five aspects: resources, technology, talents, policies and investment. Using 34 products from China's commodity futures market, this study examines the impact of social network attention and sentiment on its futures market returns. A machine learning text analysis algorithm was used to construct social network investor sentiment in consultation with three search volume indices. We find that: social network sentiment is a good predictor of commodity futures returns, investor attention has a significant positive impact on returns and absolute returns, and the Baidu index is better at forecasting returns than the Sogou and 360 indices. In addition, we examine how social network sentiment affects returns at different levels. We find that extremely high, market social network sentiments of investors changed the predicted results significantly; thus, the bases of the specified trading strategies of investors were altered. The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on business and economies globally. This paper aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on firm performance in China's high-tech industries. The population of this paper is 116 companies listed on the sci-tech innovation board (STAR market) of the Shanghai stock exchange. DuPont analysis is applied to measure firm performance including return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), asset turnover ratio (ATO), and profit margin. The empirical results show that the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant and negative impact on ROE, ROA, and ATO in high-tech industries, and research and development (R&D) investment has a moderating role in the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and firm performance. In 2017, the 19th CPC National Congress proposed to "establish a sound economic system of green, low-carbon and circular development", which indicates the direction of high-quality economic development in the new era of China. Clean power investment is a powerful way to promote high-quality economic development by adopting non-fossil-energy utilization and low-emission technologies, as well as creating new jobs. Meanwhile, large-scale investment and a long investment return period result in negative effects on local economies. To better understand the effect of clean power investment, this paper selects panel data of thirty provinces in China from 2010 to 2019 to establish a spatial Durbin model to explore the impact of clean power investment on regional high-quality economic development. The results show that inter-regional high-quality economic development shows significant spatial auto-correlation characteristics. Clean power investment has not only a positive direct effect on high-quality economic development but also generates positive spatial spillover effects. Human capital, degree of government intervention, and urbanization rate have positive effects on regional high-quality economic development, while they play a suppressed role on neighboring regions. Public capital plays a key role in national economic production in developing countries, and it has become the focus of factor reform in China. This paper aims at studying the dynamic characteristics of China's public capital and the return rate. To this end, this paper inventories the public capital stock from 1978 to 2017; constructs a two-sector model to derive the necessary condition for optimal investment related to the return rate, and empirically tests it; estimates the output shares of the two sectors and calculates the rate of return to capital; and illustrates the dynamic evolution of public capital and the return rate from the time and regional dimensions. The study shows that, first, public capital has grown significantly. The portion of public capital held in the form of state-holding is increasing year by year. However, the proportion of public capital to total capital has decreased from 81% to 35%. Second, the growth of public capital has effectively balanced the gap of capital between regions. Third, the rate of return to capital has been decreasing, with two sectors' return rates having converged in 1981 and in 2010–2013. This paper measures the stock of public capital and its return rate, which is beneficial for formulating the policy of public capital in economic production and distribution, as well as exploring the path to achieving common prosperity. A portfolio selection model with return as triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number is developed in this study to assess and select portfolios on China Stock Exchange. Although the portfolio selection has been widely investigated, and most studies have regarded return and risk as the main decisive criteria, there are many uncertainties in the financial market, such as social, political and human psychological factors, which makes it difficult for us to describe the risks in line with empirical evidence. To fill this gap, first, a literature review was conducted to clarify the current situation and shortcomings of portfolio selection. Second, the triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number was used to fuzzify the coefficients of the objective function and the constraints in the portfolio model. Third, the triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number model was transformed into a linear programming model by using the selected exact ranking function, and the model was solved by MATLAB. Finally, the historical monthly returns of 10 stocks in China's Stock Exchange from December 2017 to November 2020, lasting 36 months, were selected to demonstrate the model. The results indicate that the portfolio selection model with triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number can better meet the uncertainty of the real securities market, and more reasonable investment decision guidance can be provided for investors. Biofortification is a new agricultural intervention to alleviate hidden hunger in China and even the world. Exploring the impact of farmers′ adoption of biofortification on return on investment (ROI), which is calculated from farmers′ production net income and profitability, can provide empirical support for the development of sustainable agriculture. This paper examines the impact of the adoption of biofortification on ROI using cross-sectional data from a survey of farmers in China. An endogenous switching regression model that accounts for selection bias was used in the research. The empirical results revealed that the adoption of biofortification has a positive and statistically significant impact on ROI. A heterogeneity analysis also revealed that comparatively high annual income adopters and female adopters tend to benefit more from the adoption of biofortification than middle- and low-income adopters and male adopters. The research presents the interrelationships between banking performance, competitiveness and sustainability of the three banking systems and the impact of each sustainability variable selected on the other macroeconomic indicators in short, medium and long-time horizon. The empirical study involved the use of a panel Auto Regressive Vector methodology and was based on macroeconomic indicators relevant to the performance of the banking system (return on assets, return on equity, an annual growth rate of Gross Domestic Product), as well as indicators that can be assimilated to sustainability (renewable fuels used, CO2 emissions). The dependent variables were return on assets and the annual growth rate of Gross Domestic Product. The global sample analyzed comprises 29 countries, spread over three continents (Europe, North America, Asia), with data collected over a 10-years period (2011-2020). These countries together account for approximately 62% of global GDP (data from 2020). The research results show that as banks invest in green energy and sustainable products, competitiveness will also increase, which will have a negative impact on profitability in the short term. In the medium and long term, this impact will become positive also in terms of profitability increase. This strategic move to develop sustainable business models and to finance a higher percentage of green investments also adds extra competitive advantages, such as reputation and smart differentiation, from other less sustainability-oriented banking systems. Chinese overcapacity in the steel and coal industry has been on the rise since 2013, which leads to the misallocation of resources and decreases in production efficiency. In 2015, the Chinese central government adopted a series of de-capacity policies to resolve excess capacity and improve corporate profitability. However, there is scant evidence on the impacts of de-capacity policies on the firm profitability. Based on the data from Chinese listed companies in the steel and coal industry, this study constructs the difference-in-difference (DID) method to investigate the effects of the de-capacity policy on the profitability of listed companies in the steel and coal industry empirically. The results show that the de-capacity policy significantly increases the return on equity (ROE) of the experimental group, which is higher than that of the control group by 12.4%. That is partially because of the improvement in gross profit margin, management efficiency, and return on manpower due to the de-capacity policy. The number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China is fast growing as the country's urbanization accelerates. WWTPs, part of the high-energy-consumption industry, must use a lot of energy in wastewater treatment. PV projects in WWTPs are viable solutions for energy conservation, but PV project investors, WWTP owners, and government authorities need to conduct rigorous economic and ecological assessments. This article examines the PV potential, financial feasibility, energy savings, and emission reduction effect of large-scale WWTPs in China using the cable-supported system. Furthermore, China's total PV power potential for urban WWTPs has been assessed at 5.6 GW for the first time. According to economic feasibility analysis, 26 of the 31 WWTP-PV projects in China's various regions are economically viable. Moreover, the WWTP-PV projects can assist WWTP in reducing carbon emissions by 10%–40%. Further sensitivity analysis reveals that practically all WWTP-PV projects will be viable in the future, assuming that certain solar resource requirements are met, and appropriate investment strategies are implemented. • China has a total PV power potential of 5.6 GW for urban WWTPs. • The economic feasibility analysis shows most WWTP-PV projects in China are viable. • The WWTP-PV project can help WWTP reduce carbon emissions by 10%–40%. • The PV potential of a WWTP is correlated with its planned wastewater treatment capacity. Charitable donation and energy-saving R&D are two common approaches to fulfill corporate social responsibility (CSR). A recent survey in China shows that most firms prefer donating to investing in energy-saving research and development. To understand firms' preference, we develop a game model to investigate the optimal CSR decisions and profit of the firm, which considers donation and energy-saving R&D approaches, respectively. Then, we analyze how the government subsidies for CSR, as well as the unit production cost and the R&D cost of energy-saving product, affect the firm's CSR decisions and the CSR rate of return. Finally, we study the triple bottom line approach, i.e., considering donation and energy-saving R&D approaches simultaneously, and investigate the interaction between the above two approaches. The results show the following. (1) Government subsidy is an important driver for the firm's CSR fulfillment and the triple bottom line approach is optimal if the government simultaneously provides two subsidies. (2) When the government subsidy for energy-saving product is moderate, the firm will choose the approach with high profit and high CSR rate of return. (3) The CSR rates of return of different approaches are also compared to reveal the efficiency of the CSR fulfillment and the firm may sometimes choose an approach with low CSR rate of return to pursue high profit. We identify why and when firms prefer charitable donation to energy-saving R&D approach and determine the threshold of the firm engaging CSR for the government to formulate CSR subsidy policies. The selection of suitable locations for rooftop photovoltaic projects (RPVP) is critical for optimizing power generation efficiency and return on investment. However, traditional methods of site selection that rely on subjective assessments of index weights can compromise accuracy, while complex calculations may limit adaptability to changing real-world data. In this study, we proposed a data-driven ensemble learning framework that integrates socio-economic, environmental, climate, and geography factors to optimize RPVP site selection. Using data from 1589 counties in China, we mapped eight criteria to feature variables to facilitate machine learning classification. Furthermore, the K-means algorithm was employed to enhance the model's robustness against outliers. The findings indicate that the proposed stacking model exhibits superior performance in comparison to other classifiers, as evidenced by the higher scores of performance metrics. Specifically, for positive instance prediction, the stacking model achieves the highest Precision scores. According to the rankings of Precision scores derived from the four ensembled models, we categorized counties suitable for RPVP development into five priority tiers. This paper presents a comprehensive system for assessing contaminant emissions, including the dominant contaminant reduction effects, recessive contaminant reduction effects, and contaminant reduction efficiency indexes. The system is used to evaluate the linkage changes in contaminant emissions reduction across different sectors, the ease of regulation, and the returns on emissions reduction efforts. The study's results demonstrate that firstly, COVID-19 initially reduced contaminant emissions across almost all sectors, although this effect waned over time. Secondly, applying conventional regulatory measures to sectors with high reductions in contaminant emissions may not yield the expected results. Thirdly, while some sectors may be more difficult to regulate, they may offer a higher return on investment in terms of emissions reduction. This study tests whether economic value added (EVA) as a performance evaluation metric incentivizes public administrators to increase the performance of public organizations. It utilizes data from Wind Info Database (WIND) and finds that the adoption of EVA as a performance evaluation metric incentivizes public administrators to increase the overall efficiency of the public organizations under study. The study suggests that public administrators make prudent investment and operating decisions after the adoption of EVA as their performance evaluation metric, thereby increasing the overall organizational performance. Using 2274 firm-year observations for the period from 2009 to 2010 in China, this paper uses first-difference change analysis methodology that takes care of firm-level unobservable heterogeneities and addresses endogeneity concerns, thereby producing robust results. The change analysis setting has been used in prior studies to find the effect of certain treatment (e.g., Lyons et al. 2001; Kerr et al. 2006; Pal and Pohit 2014). Lyons et al. (2001) argue that the change analysis focuses on studying differences before and after services (i.e., the presence and absence of treatment) that are received. • An efficient hydrometallurgical process for recovering valuable metals was designed. • Technical feasibility from both environmental and economic perspectives was explored. • Local life cycle inventory relating to hydrometallurgical process was established. Waste mobile phones contain significant amounts of valuable metals and non-metallic materials. Consequently, the extraction of valuable materials from discarded phones, which is a more cost-effective method compared with primary mining, is an essential step for maximizing the recovery of secondary resources and minimizing e-waste pollution. We designed a green and efficient path for recovering valuable metals from waste mobile phones and explored its technical feasibility from both environmental and economic perspectives through life cycle assessment and revenue expenditure model. The results showed that the hydrometallurgical process had three characteristics of high recovery efficiency, significant environmental friendliness and economic feasibility. The recovery efficiencies of valuable metals were higher than 90%. Simultaneously, the return on investment was 29%, indicating that the recycling enterprises can achieve self-sufficiency. Thirdly, the environmental benefits were more significant compared to environmental damage released by hydrometallurgical process, representing a significant environmental friendliness. Within the overall recycling process, the core process made the greatest contribution to the environmental burden (45.38–65.68%), followed by manual disassembly process. A comparison of sub-processes in core process revealed that the mechanical crushing and sorting phase had the greatest environmental impacts that were primarily attributed to power consumption. Consequently, future research should focus on the development of energy-efficient pretreatment techniques and energy-saving equipment. The industrial practice of recycling waste mobile phones is still in its infancy in China. Relying on primary information from fieldwork and local newspaper articles, this paper presents the successes of the pragmatic Chinese foreign policy in Africa, as well as its challenges (sometimes failures) that have emerged in recent years in the context of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which has been in operation for almost two decades. The focus is on soft Chinese loans and the infrastructure investments financed from them, which have also raised anti-Chinese sentiments in the four East African countries examined (Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda). The author points out that there is a need for strategic planning and thinking on the Chinese side, and even more on the African side, on the one hand, in terms of financial viability and return on investment, and, on the other, in managing social inclusion and, in particular, potential frustration. The study could contribute to a better understanding of local and international reactions and interpretations of the Chinese government's socalled 'charm' offensive across Africa, as well as a deeper apprehension of Sino-African dynamics. In order to maximize the return on equity (ROE) of wind-hydrogen system investors, take full advantage of the wind power as well as smooth the wind power output of a wind farm, an optimal sizing model of a coupled wind-hydrogen system (CWHS) is established considering the requirements of wind power grid-connection technology. The fluctuating cost of wind power is calculated by an "equal-kWh following load" method and the chance-constrained programming is introduced to deal with the uncertainty generated by the wind power. The optimal capacity of each unit for a CWHS, including the wind power transmission project, electrolyser, compressor and so on, is acquired and the economic analysis is evaluated under comprehensive aspects, e.g. wind curtailment decisions, hydrogen prices, the correlations between wind power output and system load, and the fluctuation degrees of wind power generation. The simulation is established by the realistic historical data from a wind farm in Fujian, China. When the confidence level is 92%, the capacity of electrolysers increases with the increase of the hydrogen price when it is larger than the equivalent value 4.34 €/kg. In addition, the smaller the correlation between wind power output and load and the bigger the volatility index of wind power output, the less the smoothing benefit of the CWHS, where the smaller capacity of the transmission project and bigger capacities of electrolysers and compressors are required. • An optimized model for a wind-hydrogen system is built from the perspective of system investors. • The smoothing benefit is calculated based on the "equal-kWh following load" method. • The chance-constrained programming is adopted when making wind curtailment decision. • The optimal sizes of a wind-hydrogen system and transmission project are obtained. • It's not cost-effective for fuel cells to regenerate electricity. The objective of this study is to analyze systemic importance of Chinese financial institutions and its influential factors based on return spillover network. We first investigate the return spillover effects among financial institutions and construct the return spillover networks by Granger causality in vector autoregressive (VAR) models. Then we calculate six network centralities (degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, modified Katz centrality, eccentricity centrality and information centrality) to measure systemic importance of financial institutions. Because different centrality measures are correlated with each other, we use the principal component analysis method to obtain comprehensive information about systemic importance of financial institutions. Finally, we identify the major factors, including market and accounting variables, which affect systemic importance of the financial institutions with panel data regression analysis. We find that financial institutions with larger tail risk of stock return, higher return on equity, lower turnover rate and lower assets growth rate tend to be associated with greater systemic importance. Abstract To alleviate the high risks to oil supply caused by high dependency on oil imports, China is actively seeking alternative energy sources to reduce its imported oil (IO). Coal-to-liquid (CTL) is regarded as an option in China. However, few analyses have examined the net energy impact of substituting IO with CTL and determined how effective the substitution would be. Energy return on investment (EROI) analysis, an important index to characterise the viability of a natural resource from an energy standpoint, can provide insights into these issues. This paper first introduces new methods to calculate the EROIs between CTL and IO from a life-cycle perspective. Then, based on the EROI values, a new, simple method is provided to calculate the net energy change resulting from the substitution of IO with CTL. The results show that without considering the environmental inputs, the mean EROI of CTL with/without internal energy inputs is 0.29/1.44, and that of IO is approximately 5.60. When environmental inputs are considered, these values decrease to 0.27/1.09 and 5.07, respectively. In general, IO has a better net energy return than CTL. Moreover, substituting 1 MJ IO with CTL would lead to a net energy loss of 0.3–4.6 MJ. The above results suggest that China should be more cautious in developing the coal liquefaction industry from a net energy perspective. Stock returns play an important role in the empirical study of asset pricing, and are often applied in portfolio allocation and performance evaluation. The effect of macroeconomic and financial variables on stock returns is a hot topic and many studies have utilized these variables in time series models to improve the forecasts of stock returns. This study imposes macroeconomic and financial variables as weighting factors on kernel density and establishes a new prediction model - the time-varying factor weighted density model. We apply this model to monthly price data of the Chinese stock index and employ the rolling window strategy for out-of-sample forecasting. Abstract This study conducts a theoretical analysis about effects of China's financial markets on the global commodity prices, and employs ARDL model and SVAR model to test it empirically. Results illustrated that: CNY NDF rate has exerted impact on some industrial metals before the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, while impact of China's stock market on commodity prices is insignificant. We find the influence of China's stock market and CNY NDF market significantly increased after the crisis, which means the fluctuations of China's financial markets do influence the commodity prices. However, such effect is still weak comparing with US stock market and FX market. Abstract Using stock market returns of two stock exchanges in China, this paper employs MF-DCCA to investigate the non-linear cross-correlation between individual investor sentimentand Chinese stock market return. We find that there exists a power-law cross-correlation between individual investor sentiment and Chinese stock market return, and the cross-correlations are significantly multifractal. In addition, the cross-correlation between individual investor sentiment and Shenzhen Component Index (SZSE) return is more anti-persistent than that between individual investor sentiment and Shanghai Composite Index (SSEC) return, implying that individual investor sentiment has a stronger impact on small stocks. Besides, long-range correlations, fat-tailed distribution and extreme value all contribute to the multifractality for cross-correlation between individual investor sentiment and SSEC return, while long-range correlation is the main source of multifractality for the cross-correlation between individual investor sentiment and SZSE return. Economic growth convergence, one of the classical assumption in regional economic growth, has been perplexing. There are many empirical studies trying to test if there is regional convergence in China. In this article, we bring new information of the finer spatial scale to the existing literature by using neoclassical convergence analysis, cross-sectional specifications, panel data models, and spatial econometric techniques to test the convergence hypothesis across 2,286 cities and counties in China. Empirical findings from cross-sectional data and spatial panel data show that significant absolute β and conditional β convergence are present in gross domestic product per capita after controlling for investment return rate, human capital, savings rate, population growth, technology advancement, capital depreciation rate, and initial technology level. We also find spatial agglomeration in urban and county economic growth is strong, and spatial effects are significant. Urban and county economic growth convergence rates for 1992–2010 show a gradually accelerated development trend. We present significant evidence that levels of investment, human capital, and initial technology impose significant facilitating effects on city and county economic growth, while savings and population growth have significant negative effects. This paper investigates the influence of hot money on the return and volatility of the Chinese stock market using a nonlinear Granger causality test and a new GARCH-class model based on mixed data sampling regression (GARCH–MIDAS). The empirical results suggest that no linear or nonlinear causality exists between the growth rate of hot money and the Chinese stock market return, implying that the Chinese stock market is not driven by hot money and vice versa. However, hot money has a significant positive impact on the long-term volatility of the Chinese stock market. Furthermore, the dependence between the long-term volatility caused by hot money and the total volatility of the Chinese stock market is time-variant, indicating that huge volatilities in the stock market are not always triggered by international speculation capital flow and that Chinese authorities should further focus on more systemic reforms in the trading rules and on effectively regulating the stock market. Energy return on energy invested (EROI) might be considered a measure of net energy, and most current studies focus on standard EROI (EROI ST ). If the energy inputs required to obtain a fuel was extended from a wellhead to the point of use, the energy delivered decreases, and the energy input of delivering the fuel increases. These factors combine to reduce the EROI ST to what is referred to as the point of use EROI (EROI POU ). This study calculates the direct and indirect energy (embodied energy) inputs for energy production sectors (including extraction, processing and delivery) by means of an Input-Output table to calculate China's EROI POU and the net energies from 1987 to 2012. Based on calculations in this study, the EROI POU of China's energy production sector declined from 11.01:1 to 5.26:1 between 1987 and 2012. In 1987, the energy production sectors consumed 1 ton standard coal equivalent (TCE) energy inputs for every 10.01 TCE of produce net energy. However, in 2012, this number declined to 4.25. Additionally, this study simulates and forecast economic Gross Domestic Product (GDP) trends in China using net energy production function. This paper reviews China's future fossil fuel supply from the perspectives of physical output and net energy output. Comprehensive analyses of physical output of fossil fuels suggest that China's total oil production will likely reach its peak, at about 230 Mt/year (or 9.6 EJ/year), in 2018; its total gas production will peak at around 350 Bcm/year (or 13.6 EJ/year) in 2040, while coal production will peak at about 4400 Mt/year (or 91.9 EJ/year) around 2020 or so. In terms of the forecast production of these fuels, there are significant differences among current studies. These differences can be mainly explained by different ultimately recoverable resources assumptions, the nature of the models used, and differences in the historical production data. Due to the future constraints on fossil fuels production, a large gap is projected to grow between domestic supply and demand, which will need to be met by increasing imports. Net energy analyses show that both coal and oil and gas production show a steady declining trend of EROI (energy return on investment) due to the depletion of shallow-buried coal resources and conventional oil and gas resources, which is generally consistent with the approaching peaks of physical production of fossil fuels. The peaks of fossil fuels production, coupled with the decline in EROI ratios, are likely to challenge the sustainable development of Chinese society unless new abundant energy resources with high EROI values can be found. Using 5-minute high frequency data from the Chinese stock market, we employ a non-parametric method to estimate Fama-French portfolio realized jumps and investigate whether the estimated positive, negative and sign realized jumps could forecast or explain the cross-sectional stock returns. The Fama-MacBeth regression results show that not only have the realized jump components and the continuous volatility been compensated with risk premium, but also that the negative jump risk, the positive jump risk and the sign jump risk, to some extent, could explain the return of the stock portfolios. As a carbon reduction technology, CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) is an important way to achieve the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" in China. In order to change the situation of slow commercialization and large-scale development of CCUS, this paper proposes to establish a CCUS cooperative alliance. Taking alliance organizers, institutional investors, upstream operators and downstream operators as research objects, the evolutionary game model is developed to reveal the dynamic evolution mechanism of CCUS cooperative alliance and analyze the impact of exogenous variables on the strategic choices of alliance members. The results show that: (1) establishing a strong market-oriented alliance can promote the large-scale deployment and commercialization of CCUS, (2) when return on investment is greater than or equal to 6%, it can effectively promote the investment of institutional investors in CCUS field, (3) when the government subsidy rate is greater than or equal to 75%, the willingness of downstream operators to operate independently is significantly enhanced. The utilization of fuel cell vehicles can significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas. However, huge investments are needed to construct the hydrogen infrastructure to produce, store and distribute hydrogen fuel to fuel cell vehicles. The present study conducted an analysis of a roll-out strategy to introduce fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen stations in Shenzhen, China between 2016 and 2025. An accurate estimation to develop hydrogen economy in Shenzhen in the near-term was provided. Three different scenarios of fuel cell vehicle penetration rate in the new car sales market were employed to predict the number of fuel cell vehicles and daily hydrogen demand in Shenzhen. The capital investment and operation/maintenance cost of on-site steam methane reforming hydrogen fueling stations was estimated. For a station with 100, 500 and 1000 kg/day capacity, the capital investment is $1.04, 4.15 and 7.84 million, respectively, while the corresponding hydrogen fuel price at 20 years of return on investment (ROI) is 7.7, 7.0 and 6.8 $/kg, respectively. A roll-out strategy of ten hydrogen stations in Shenzhen by 2020 was proposed, taking into consideration the population density, average income, locations of grocery stores and shopping malls, and locations of existing gas stations. The total capital investment required to construct 10 hydrogen stations is $19.7 million. The fuel costs and life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of hydrogen, gasoline and electricity vehicles were assessed to justify the benefits of introducing fuel cell vehicles in Shenzhen. Energy-intensive firms are confronted with increasing pressure to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption. This paper explores the relationship between the energy efficiency and financial performance of a sample of firms in China based on a panel dataset for the period 2010-2014. Six financial indicators representing the benefits of different stakeholders are used in the analysis. Our empirical results show that energy efficiency is positively related to return on equity, return on assets, return on investment, return on invested capital and return on sales but has no significant relationship with Tobin's q. In addition, we examine the interaction effect between energy intensity and firm growth and find that firm growth helps to enhance the positive relationship between energy intensity and financial performance. This study examines trends in energy input and output in China's crop production. Trends are also observed in energy use efficiency and economic return on energy use from 1991 to 2012. The results indicate that energy input increased from 3647.1 PJ to 7919.5 PJ and energy output increased from 7222.0 PJ to 10954.0 PJ between 1991 and 2012. Given the growth in the sowing area, energy input and output per unit of area sown also increased during this period. Energy use efficiency was estimated at 1.98 in 1991 and 1.38 in 2012, with an average annual decrease of 1.69%. The economic return on crop production in China increased from 1991 to 2012 whereas agricultural labor input decreased; consequently, the economic return on energy use, sowing area, and labor all increased stably. Given a larger growth rate and higher production of high-value and low-energy crops when compared with low-value and high-energy crops, an increase in the economic return on energy use occurred but so did a decline in energy use efficiency. This phenomenon indicates the need to increase investments in technological development and technological innovation, adopt new policies to optimize China's crop production structure, and establish sustainable production systems. In this article, profitability, asset quality, debt risk, and sales growth are used as measurement indices of corporate operating performance. On the basis of panel data of 630 companies for 2008-2014, which is after the completion of China's split-share structure reform, an entity fixed-effects model is used to study the effect of qualified foreign institutional investor (QFII) shareholdings on the operating performance of Chinese non-financial transnational corporations. The results show that the QFII shareholdings ratio and shareholdings checks and balances degree are significantly positively correlated with return on equity and total assets turnover, but they have no significant correlation with asset liability ratio and sales growth rate. The evidence therefore suggests that the higher the QFII shareholdings ratio is, the higher the enthusiasm is for QFII shares participating in corporate governance, and the better the general corporate operating performance. The findings provide an important reference for Chinese transnational corporations to introduce QFII shares to improve governance structure and corporate operating performance. In this paper, we advocate the provincial TV audience rating as the novel proxy for the provincial investor sentiment (PIS) and investigate its relation with stock returns. The empirical results firstly show that the PIS is positively related to stock returns. Secondly, we provide direct evidence on the existence of home bias in China by observing that the provincial correlation coefficient is significantly larger than the cross-provincial correlation coefficient. Finally, the PIS can explain a large proportion of provincial comovement. This study investigates individual heterogeneity in the economic returns to higher education in urban China following large-scale higher education expansion. We draw on data from the urban section of two waves of the Chinese General Social Survey, analyzing a sample of 1022 individuals in total who (1) were aged between 25 and 32; (2) completed high school education; and (3) were currently employed. Individual-level estimates of the distributions of the returns to higher education are obtained using a nonparametric kernel approach. While the average rate of returns to higher education increased for the 2003–2010 period, the extent of heterogeneity in these returns increased as well. Analysis of the heterogeneous returns to higher education across the distribution of income shows that the effects of college education are greatest at the upper end of the income distribution. Currently, there are considerable discrepancies between China's central government and some local governments in attitudes towards coal to liquids (CTL) technology. Energy return on investment (EROI) analysis of CTL could provide new insights that may help solve this dilemma. Unfortunately, there has been little research on this topic; this paper therefore analyses the EROI of China's Shenhua Group Direct Coal Liquefaction (DCL) project, currently the only DCL commercial project in the world. The inclusion or omission of internal energy and by-products is controversial. The results show that the EROIstnd without by-product and with internal energy is 0.68-0.81; the EROIstnd (the standard EROI) without by-product and without internal energy is 3.70-5.53; the EROIstnd with by-product and with internal energy is 0.76-0.90; the EROIstnd with by-product and without internal energy is 4.13-6.14. Furthermore, it is necessary to consider carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a means to control the CO2 emissions. Considering the added energy inputs of CCS at the plant level, the EROIs decrease to 0.65-0.77, 2.87-3.97, 0.72-0.85, and 3.20-4.40, respectively. The extremely low, even negative, net energy, which may be due to high investments in infrastructure and low conversion efficiency, suggests CTL is not a good choice to replace conventional energy sources, and thus, Chinese government should be prudent when developing it. Does the rate of return from the Chinese real estate industry correlate with the intensity of competition among real estate firms? If China’s equity market performs efficiently, the rates of return of real estate firms should vary indirectly with their level of monopoly power. Greater monopoly power reduces earnings risk and leads to lower costs of capital. The authors analyze empirical evidence and indicate no relationship exists between returns and competition. We propose the asymmetric multiscale detrended cross-correlation analysis (MS-ADCCA) method and apply MS-ADCCA method to explore the existence of asymmetric cross-correlation for daily price returns in US and Chinese stock markets and to assess the properties of these asym-metric cross-correlations. The results all show the existences of asymmetric cross-correlations, while small asymmetries at small scales and larger asymmetries at larger scales are also displayed. There is a strong similarity between S&P500 and DJI, and we reveal that the asymmetries depend more on the cross-correlations of S&P500 vs. DJI, S&P500 vs. NQCI, DJI vs. NQCI, and ShangZheng vs. ShenCheng when the market is falling than rising, respectively. By comparing the spectra of S&P500 vs. NQCI and DJI vs. NQCI with uptrends and downtrends, we detect some new characteristics which lead to some new conclusions. Likewise, some new conclusions also can be drawn by the new characteristics displayed through the comparison between the spec-tra of ShangZheng vs. HSI and ShenCheng vs. HSI. Obviously, we conclude that although the overall spectra are similar and one market has the same effect when it is rising and falling in the study of asymmetric cross-correlations between it and different markets, the cross-correlations and asymmetries on the trends of the different markets are all different. MS-ADCCA method can detect the differences on the asymmetric cross-correlations by different trends of markets. Moreover, the uniqueness of cross-correlation between NQCI and HSI can be detected in the study of the asymmetric cross-correlations, which confirms that HSI is unique in the Chinese stock mar-kets and NQCI is unique in the US stock markets further. Abstract: As an aggregate measure of the variations in individuals, the analysis of mobility provides a substantial and comprehensive perspective into the complexity of socio-economic systems. In this paper, we introduced the ranking mobility index to measure the ranking variations of the stocks in Chinese stock market over time. Using the daily data of 837 constituent stocks of the Shanghai A-Stock Composite Index from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2012, we examined respectively the dependence of ranking mobility with respect to the absolute return, trading volume and turnover ratio on the sampling time interval. The scaling property is observed in all three relations. The fact of long relaxation times gives evidence of long memory property in the stock ranking orders. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Marine ranching have attracted wide attention in the marine fishery in recent years owing to numerous benefits for sustainable development. However, existing research efforts on marine ranching risk management are very limited, and no prior in-depth research has focused on studying the risk interdependencies in marine ranching from the perspectives of multiple risks. This paper begins by identifying 29 marine ranching risks using a systematic literature review and experts propose. Next, the cause-effect diagram and hierarchical network model of marine ranching are obtained using the combined DEMATEL - ISM method, which clearly confirms the interdependent relationships among various risk factors. It also identifies the most critical factors, which enables the operators of the marine ranching to make decisions to reduce risks. Then the hierarchical network model is mapped to a BN and expert judgments are further transformed into the conditional probability distribution by software Netica, in order to quantify the strength of the interdependent relationships among the marine ranching risk system, and determine main paths resulting in risk occurrence. According to the research results, the risk occurrence probability of marine ranching is high, with a probability of 85.1%，and the most approximate cause path leading to the occurrence of risk are determined—namely, X 27 (Long construction cycle) → X 10 (Financing difficulties) → X 15 (Safety hazards) → X 11 (Investment return risk) → Y(Marine ranching risk) and X 9 (Lack of technical talent) → X 8 (Monitoring failure) → X 2 (Habitat destruction) → X 26 (Large preinvestment) → X 10 → X 15 → X 11 (Investment return risk) → Y. We utilize the realized jump components to explore a new jump (including nonsystematic jump and systematic jump) risk factor model. After estimating daily realized jumps from high-frequency transaction data of the Chinese A-share stocks, we calculate monthly jump size, monthly jump standard deviation, and monthly jump arrival rate and then use those monthly jump factors to explain the return of the following month. Our empirical results show that the jump tail risk can explain the equity return. For the large capital-size stocks, large cap stock portfolios, and index, one-month lagged jump risk factor significantly explains the asset return variation. This paper empirically analyzes determinants that influence IPO's initial abnormal returns Chinese Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) with the sample of 355 listed companies. The result indicates that there exists unbalanced distribution of listed companies in different regions and industries on GEM and their initial abnormal return is significantly different. Issue price, interval between issuing and listing, issuing size, return on equity, concentration of ownership from the second shareholder to the tenth shareholder, turnover rate, average IPO's initial abnormal return of 5 new stocks and lot winning rate of online issuing can influence IPO's initial abnormal return significantly. The findings can confirm the application of the following hypotheses to Chinese GEM: winners' curse hypothesis, ex ante uncertainty hypothesis, signaling hypothesis, heterogeneous expectation hypothesis, supervision strengthening hypothesis, investor sentiment hypothesis and bandwagon hypothesis. To analyze the efficiency of the agro-ecosystem of Dongting Rim in Hunan Province, this paper adopted the emergy theory to study the agricultural output of this region during 2001 to 2010. The results showed that the value of regional agricultural emergy output increased by 44.68% to (6.50 E) sej, but lower than the growth of non-agricultural industry output. Compared with 2001, the emergy output of planting industry was (4.10E) sej in 2010 which occupied 63.09% of the total agricultural emergy output and got an increase of 2.93 percentage points, while the emergy output of stock farming got a decrease of 2.87 percentage points. The growth of fishery emergy output was not in conformity with the characteristics of Dongting Rim in Hunan. From the contrast between emergy output and economic output, we could find that the economic return ratio of planting industry and fishery industry were lower than those of forestry industry and stock farming industry, which indicated that it is necessary to improve the economic benefits of planting industry and fishery industry which were the traditional industries with advantages of the Dongting Rim in Hunan. The water footprint in terms of the sum of both direct and indirect water cost of wastewater treatment is for the first time accounted in this work. On the basis of the hybrid method as a combination of process analysis and input-output analysis, a detailed water footprint accounting procedure is provided to cover the supply chain of a wastewater treatment plant. A set of indices intending to reveal the efficiency as well as renewability of wastewater treatment systems are devised as parallels of corresponding indicators in net energy analysis for energy supply systems. A case study is carried out for the Beijing Space City wastewater treatment plant as a landmark project. The high WROI (water return on investment) and low WIWP (water investment in water purified) indicate a high efficiency and renewability of the case system, illustrating the fundamental function of wastewater treatment for water reuse. The increasing of the wastewater and sludge treatment rates are revealed in an urgent need to reduce the water footprint of China and to improve the performance of wastewater treatment. This paper proposes a new panel quantile regression model with change points at unknown positions, which parameters are estimated by Bayesian inference and MCMC sampling. By an empirical study to explore structural changes in the high-frequency dependence from trading volume and market trend to IPO's initial return in China's growth enterprise market, it is found that: structural change points are near the market opening for higher quantiles of returns, and close to the median trading time for lower quantiles; the IPO's trading volume gives a greater impact on IPO's return before change points than after change points on listing date, while the volume of Shenzhen composite index contributes larger impact on IPO's return after change points than before change points; the separation of return and volume of IPOs is detected both at lower quantiles before the change points and at any quantile after the change points; the volume of Shenzhen composite index is positively correlated to IPO's return through all quantiles before or after change points, moreover, the correlation coefficients after change points are stronger than ones before change points, and the same is true at extreme quantiles than at median quantiles.
