In recent years, with the improvement of people's living standards, the incidence of DM has increased year by year in China. DM is a common metabolic syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia caused by genetic, environmental and other factors. At the same time, long-term suffering from DM will also have an impact on the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves, and associated serious diseases. The human body has a large and complex gut microbiota, which has a significant impact on the body's metabolism. Research shows that the occurrence and development of DM and its complications are closely related to intestinal microbiota. At present, western medicine generally treats DM with drugs. The hypoglycemic effect is fast and strong, but it can have a series of side effects on the human body. Compared with western medicine, Chinese medicine has its unique views and methods in treating DM. TCM can improve symptoms and treat complications by improving the imbalance of microbiota in patients with DM. Its characteristics of health, safety, and reliability are widely accepted by the general public. Recently, the frequent occurrence of droughts has caused a serious impact on vegetation growth and progression. This research is based upon the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 2001 to 2020. The correlation between the NDVI and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) at disparate time scales was used to assess the response of vegetation growth to drought in the Yinshanbeilu region. The drought levels of SPEI1, SPEI3, SPEI6, and SPEI12 increased prominently in the eastern region of the country, while the NDVI decreased significantly from east to west in spring, summer, and autumn but was reversed in the winter. The area with an upward trend (33.86%) was slightly lower than that with a downward trend (66.14%). The correlation coefficients between the NDVI and SPEI over the entire year increased with the SPEI timescale. The elevated values were concentrated in the southeastern and western regions of the survey region. Additionally, the best correlation timescales were SPEI6 and SPEI12. Grassland was the most sensitive vegetation type to the SPEI response in the NDVI. The correlation coefficients of NDVI and SPEI1–12 were 0.313, 0.459, 0.422, and 0.406. Both spring and summer were more responsive to SPEI12, whereas autumn and winter were more responsive to SPEI3. The correlation of disparate time scales exhibited complex soil texture features with respect to different seasonal scales, and the soil texture showed a strong response to vegetation in both summer and autumn. Loam, sandy loam, and silty loam all exhibited the highest response to SPEI12, with coefficients of 0.509, 0.474, and 0.403, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Camellia oleifera, an essential woody oil tree in China, propagates through grafting. However, in production, it has been found that the interaction between rootstocks and scions may affect fruit characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to predict fruit characteristics after grafting to identify suitable rootstock types. Methods: This study used Deep Neural Network (DNN) methods to analyze the impact of 106 6-year-old grafting combinations on the characteristics of C.oleifera, including fruit and seed characteristics, and fatty acids. The prediction of characteristics changes after grafting was explored to provide technical support for the cultivation and screening of specialized rootstocks. After determining the unsaturated fat acids, palmitoleic acid C16:1, cis-11 eicosenoic acid C20:1, oleic acid C18:1, linoleic acid C18:2, linolenic acid C18:3, kernel oil content, fruit height, fruit diameter, fresh fruit weight, pericarp thickness, fresh seed weight, and the number of fresh seeds, the DNN method was used to calculate and analyze the model. The model was screened using the comprehensive evaluation index of Mean Absolute Error (MAPE), determinate correlation R2 and and time consumption. Results: When using 36 neurons in 3 hidden layers, the deep neural network model had a MAPE of less than or equal to 16.39% on the verification set and less than or equal to 13.40% on the test set. Compared with traditional machine learning methods such as support vector machines and random forests, the DNN method demonstrated more accurate predictions for fruit phenotypic characteristics, with MAPE improvement rates of 7.27 and 3.28 for the 12 characteristics on the test set and maximum R2 improvement values of 0.19 and 0.33. In conclusion, the DNN method developed in this study can effectively predict the oil content and fruit phenotypic characteristics of C. oleifera, providing a valuable tool for predicting the impact of grafting combinations on the fruit of C. oleifera. Camellia oleifera is a vital economic crop of southern China. Accurate mapping and monitoring of Camellia oleifera plantations are essential for promoting sustainable operations within the Camellia oleifera industry. However, traditional remote sensing interpretation methods are no longer feasible for the large-scale extraction of plantation areas. This study proposes a novel deep learning-based method that utilizes GF-2 remote sensing imagery to achieve precise mapping and efficient monitoring of Camellia oleifera plantations. First, we conducted a comparative analysis of the performance of various semantic segmentation models using a self-compiled dataset of Camellia oleifera plantations. Subsequently, we proceeded to validate the prediction results obtained from the most effective deep-learning network model for Camellia oleifera plantations in Hengyang City. Finally, we incorporated DEM data to analyze the spatial distribution patterns. The findings indicate that the U-Net++ network model outperforms other semantic segmentation methods when applied to our self-generated dataset of Camellia oleifera plantations. It achieves a recall rate of 0.89, a precision rate of 0.92, and an mIOU of 0.83, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method in identifying and monitoring Camellia oleifera plantations. By combining the predicted results with the data from DEM, we discovered that these plantations are typically situated at elevations ranging from 50 to 200 m, with slopes below 25°, and facing south or southeast. Moreover, a significant positive spatial correlation and clustering phenomenon are observed among the townships in Hengyang City. The method proposed in this study facilitates rapid and precise identification and monitoring of Camellia oleifera plantations, offering significant theoretical support and a scientific foundation for the management and ecological conservation of Camellia oleifera plantations. Background: In this article, we use cross-sectional data obtained from the 2018 China Health and Aging Tracking Survey (CHARLS) to examine the impact of neighborhood mental health at the community level on the mental health of older adults aged 60 years and older. Methods: NMH is the average mental health of older adults in the same community, excluding the older adults themselves. The explained variable mental health in this paper was measured using the simple CES-D depression scale. The mediating variables were social connectedness, social participation and social inclusion, and the instrumental variables were physical exercise and amusement. regression analysis was conducted using OLS regression models, two-stage least squares (IV-2SLS) instrumental variables to address the two-way causality of NMH and MH, and KHB decomposition was used to investigate the effect mechanism. Results: Baseline regressions showed that the neighborhood mental health effect positively influenced the mental health of older adults (Coef. = 0.356, 95% CI 0.315,0.397). The neighborhood mental health effect estimated by IV-2SLS (Coef. = 0.251, 95% CI 0.096,0.405) was higher than the OLS regression, indicating endogeneity. The mediated effects of KHB showed total (Coef. = 0.356, 95% CI 0.314,0.398), direct (Coef. = 0.281, 95% CI 0.232,0.330), and indirect effects (Coef. = 0.075, 95% CI 0.049,0.101). While the total effect was 1.266 times higher than the direct effect, 21.03% of the total effect came from mediating variables. Conclusions: First, the neighborhood mental health effect has a positive impact on the mental health of older adults, but there are heterogeneous differences based on gender, age, and place of residence. Second, the results of the IV-2SLS estimation showed that the effect of the neighborhood mental health effect was underestimated if endogenous problems were not controlled for. Third, the effect of neighborhood mental health on older adults' mental health was tested to be stable. Moreover, social connectedness, social participation, and social interaction are important mediating mechanisms for the effect of neighborhood mental health on older adults' mental health. Drought is a damaging and costly natural disaster that will become more serious in the context of global climate change in the future. Constructing a reliable drought risk assessment model and presenting its spatial pattern could be significant for agricultural production. However, agricultural drought risk mapping scientifically still needs more effort. Considering the whole process of drought occurrence, this study developed a comprehensive agricultural drought risk assessment model that involved all risk components (exposure, hazard, vulnerability and mitigation capacity) and their associated criteria using geospatial techniques and fuzzy logic. The comprehensive model was applied in Songnen Plain to justify its applicability. ROC and AUC techniques were applied to evaluate its efficiency, and the prediction rate was 88.6%. The similar spatial distribution of water resources further verified the model's reliability. The southwestern Songnen Plain is a very-high-risk (14.44%) region, determined by a high vulnerability, very high hazardousness and very low mitigation capacity, and is the region that should be paid the most attention to; the central part is a cross-risk region of high risk (24.68%) and moderate risk (27.28%) with a serious disturbance of human agricultural activities; the northeastern part is a dry grain production base with a relatively optimal agricultural production condition of very low risk (22.12%) and low risk (11.48%). Different drought mitigation strategies should be adopted in different regions due to different drought causes. The findings suggest that the proposed model is highly effective in mapping comprehensive drought risk for formulating strong drought mitigation strategies and could be used in other drought-prone areas. Being overweight or obese is one of the public health concerns worldwide, and its prevalence is gradually increasing. Obesity has been proven to be associated with some cancers, including upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGC). However, studies on the prevalence of obesity among residents of areas at high risk of UGC in China are minimal. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of obesity and its influencing factors among people aged 40–69 years (high-risk population) in high-risk areas for UGC in Jiangsu Province, southeast China. This cross-sectional study involved 45,036 subjects aged 40–69 years identified in the Rural Early Diagnosis and Treatment of UGC Project database in Jiangsu Province from 2017 to 2021. Differences in prevalence across gender and age were assessed using the Chi-square test. Using a multinomial logistic regression model, we examined independent risk factors for overweight/obesity and their gender and age differences. The prevalence of overweight, obesity, and overweight/obesity varied based on the standards used: Chinese standard (42.1%, 11.9%, and 54.0%) and WHO standard (34.7%, 4.7%, and 39.4%), respectively. Being overweight was more common in men than women, while obesity was more common in women than men. Age of 50–59 years, married, household size of 7–9, drinking, soy products, pickled food, and hot food intake were positively associated with overweight/obesity. Females, 60–69 years, higher education level, household size of 4–6, annual family income of more than 60,000 CNY, smoking, and fresh fruit intake were negatively associated with overweight/obesity. Stratified analysis showed that the effects of age, education and meat, egg and dairy products on overweight/obesity were different across gender. The impact of fresh fruit and vegetables on overweight/obesity was also heterogeneous between the younger (40–59 years) and older (60–69 years) groups. In conclusion, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is high among adults aged 40–69 years from high-risk areas for UGC of Jiangsu Province, southeast China. Independent influencing factors of being overweight/obese included gender, age, marital status, education, household size, annual family income, smoking, drinking, fresh fruit, soy products, pickled food and hot food intake, and may vary by gender and age. Screening-based interventions should be considered to control obesity levels among screened participants. Camellia oleifera (C. oleifera) is a unique edible oil crop in China cultivated in the hilly southern mountains. Although C. oleifera is classified as a drought-tolerant tree species, drought remains the main factor limiting the growth of C. oleifera in summer and autumn. Using endophytes to improve crop drought tolerance is one effective strategy to meet our growing food crop demand. In this study, we showed that endophyte Streptomyces albidoflavus OsiLf-2 could mitigate the negative impact of drought stress on C. oleifera, thus improving seed, oil, and fruit quality. Microbiome analysis revealed that OsiLf-2 treatment significantly affected the microbial community structure in the rhizosphere soil of C. oleifera, decreasing both the diversity and abundance of the soil microbe. Likewise, transcriptome and metabolome analyses found that OsiLf-2 protected plant cells from drought stress by reducing root cell water loss and synthesizing osmoregulatory substances, polysaccharides, and sugar alcohols in roots. Moreover, we observed that OsiLf-2 could induce the host to resist drought stress by increasing its peroxidase activity and synthesizing antioxidants such as cysteine. A multi-omics joint analysis of microbiomes, transcriptomes, and metabolomes revealed OsiLf-2 assists C. oleifera in resisting drought stress. Drought poses a serious threat to agricultural production and food security in the context of global climate change. Few studies have explored the response mechanism and lag time of agricultural drought to meteorological drought from the perspective of cultivated land types. This paper analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution patterns and hysteresis relationship of meteorological and agricultural droughts in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. Here, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index products and surface temperature products were selected to calculate the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) from 2010 to 2015. Furthermore, we obtained the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) for the same period. Based on these indices, we analyzed the correlation and the hysteresis relationship between agricultural and meteorological drought in rainfed and irrigated arable land. The results showed that, (1) compared with SPEI, the high spatial resolution PDSI data were deemed more suitable for the subsequent accurate and scientific analysis of the relationship between meteorological and agricultural droughts. (2) When meteorological drought occurs, irrigated arable land is the first to experience agricultural drought, and then alleviates when the drought is most severe in rainfed arable land, indicating that irrigated arable land is more sensitive to drought events when exposed to the same degree of drought risk. However, rainfed arable land is actually more susceptible to agricultural drought due to the intervention of irrigation measures. (3) According to the cross-wavelet transform analysis, agricultural droughts significantly lag behind meteorological droughts by about 33 days during the development process of drought events. (4) The spatial distribution of the correlation coefficient between the PDSI and TVDI shows that the area with negative correlations of rainfed croplands and the area with positive correlations of irrigated croplands account for 77.55% and 68.04% of cropland areas, respectively. This study clarifies and distinguishes the details of the meteorological-to-agricultural drought relationship in rainfed and irrigated arable land, noting that an accurate lag time can provide useful guidance for drought monitoring management and irrigation project planning in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Enclosure is one of the useful measures to protect and restore degraded grasslands, and it is widely used around the world. The vegetation characteristics of grasslands directly reflect the recovery status of degraded grasslands; however, conflicting results of plant traits were continually achieved in the numerous on-site studies of enclosure in the last two decades. It is necessary to conduct a systematic assessment to find a general conclusion for the effects of enclosure on different grasslands. Studies on the enclosure grasslands in China were taken as the objects to refine the relationships between grassland vegetation characteristics and enclosure measures using meta-analysis. Enclosure had positive effects on the restoration of vegetation coverage, aboveground and belowground biomass, and diversity of degraded grasslands. Different vegetation characteristics and grassland types showed different responses to enclosure duration. The vegetation productivity reached a maximum in the 11–15 years of enclosure for alpine grasslands and typical steppe grasslands, 6–10 years for desert grasslands, and more than 15 years of enclosure for meadow grasslands. Plant species diversity reached the peak values when alpine grasslands and typical steppe grasslands were enclosed approximately 10 years, desert grasslands approximately 11–15 years, and meadow grasslands approximately 5 years. These results indicated that the management strategies of enclosed grasslands should be adjusted reasonably according to the types and the management objectives of grasslands in order to maintain or even improve the condition and services of grassland ecosystems. The main purpose of this research is to apply the logistic regression (LR) model, the support vector machine (SVM) model based on radial basis function, the random forest (RF) model, and the coupled model of the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and genetic algorithm (GA) with RF, to make landslide susceptibility mapping for the Ankang City of Shaanxi Province, China. To this end, a landslide inventory map consisting of 4278 identified landslides is randomly divided into training and test landslides in a ratio of 7 : 3. The 15 landslide influencing factors are selected as follows: slope aspect, slope degree, elevation, terrain curvature, plane curvature, profile curvature, surface roughness, distance to faults, distance to roads, landform, lithology, distance to rivers, rainfall, stream power index (SPI), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the potential multicollinearity problem among these factors is detected by Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), variance inflation factor (VIF), and tolerance (TOL). We evaluate the performance of the model separately by statistical training and test dataset metrics, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, kappa, mean absolute error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The training success rates of LR, SVM, RF, WOA-RF, and GA-RF models are 0.7546, 0.8317, 0.8561, 0.8804, and 0.8957; the testing success rates are 0.7551, 0.8375, 0.8395, 0.8348, and 0.85007. The results show that the GA significantly improves the predictive power of the RF model. Background. There are few reports on the relationship between dietary patterns and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study aimed to explore relationships between dietary patterns and CVD risk in the T2D population using multiple statistical analysis methods. Methods. A total of 2,984 patients with T2D from the Xinjiang Multi-Ethnic Cohort, 555 of whom were suffering from CVD, were enrolled in this study. Participants' dietary intake was measured by the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Three statistical methods were used to construct dietary patterns, including principal component analysis (PCA) method, reduced-rank regressions (RRR) method, and partial least-squares regression (PLS) method. Then, the association between dietary patterns and CVD risk in T2D patients was analyzed by logistic regression. After excluding participants with CVD, the associations between dietary patterns and 10-year CVD risk scores were subsequently evaluated to reduce reverse causality. Results. In this study, four dietary patterns were identified by three methods. Adjustment for confounding factors, subjects with the highest scores on the "high-protein and high-carbohydrate" patterns derived from PCA, RRR, and PLS had higher odds of CVD than those with the lowest scores (OR: 2.89, 95% CI: 2.11–3.96, P t r e n d < 0.001 ; OR: 2.96, 95% CI: 2.17–4.03, P t r e n d < 0.001 ; OR: 2.01, 95% CI: 1.50–2.70, P t r e n d < 0.001 , respectively). However, the dietary pattern of PCA-prudent was not significantly related to the odds of having CVD in T2D patients (adjusted ORQ4vsQ1: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.70–1.24, P t r e n d = 0.474). Interestingly, we also found significant associations between "high-protein and high-carbohydrate" patterns and the elevated predicted 10-year CVD risk in T2D patients (all P t r e n d < 0.05). Conclusion. The positive correlation between "high-protein and high-carbohydrate" patterns and CVD risk in T2D patients was robust across all three data-driven approaches. These findings may have public health significance, encouraging an emphasis on food choices in the usual diet and promoting nutritional interventions for patients with T2D to prevent CVD. Under the background of global warming, it is of great significance to study the temporal and spatial evolution of land surface temperature (LST) on long-time scale and the impacts of land use in the fields of urban thermal environment and regional climate change. Based on MODIS LST long time series remote sensing data, the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of pixel-wise LST in Jiangxi Province, the middle inland province of China from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed by using Theil-Sen + Mann-Kendall, coefficient of variation and Hurst index, and the response of LST to land use was identified by combining the contribution and diversity index. The results showed as follows: (1) LST was generally distributed as "high in Middle-East-West-South and low in North-northwest-southeast direction". LST showed an overall downward trend, indicating a weakening of the warming trend. The dynamic trend of LST was characterized by more descending than ascending tendency. The dynamic stability showed a coexistence of high and low fluctuation tendency, with a higher proportion of medium and low fluctuation areas having obvious spatial differences. The overall dynamic sustainability was characterized by uncertainty of future change trend. (2) The LST were strongly affected by land use in the past 20 years. Firstly, the areas of high LST were mostly located in construction land and unused land, while the areas of low LST were mostly in water area and forest land. However, forest land and water area of high temperature were gradually turned to construction land later on. Secondly, the land use structure and pattern had an strong effects on LST. With the increase of the area proportion of different land use, the LST showed significant differences. The more complex the spatial pattern of land use, the more obvious its impact on LST. The research results will provide some reference for the regions with the same characteristics as Jiangxi Province to deal with LST under the background of global climate change. Agave species are widely cultivated crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants for alcoholic beverages, food and fiber production. Among these, the Agave hybrid H11648 ((A. amaniensis × A. angustifolia) × A. amaniensis) is the main cultivar for sisal fiber in the tropical areas of Brazil, China, and African countries. The plants of Agave hybrid H11648 have a long life cycle and large leaves, which require a huge amount of nitrogen nutrient. However, the molecular basis of nitrogen transport and allocation has not been well understood in agave. In this study, we identified 19 NITRATE TRANSPORTER 1/PEPTIDE TRANSPORTER FAMILY(NPF) genes (called AhNPFs) with full-length coding sequences in Agave hybrid H11648. Our analysis of gene expression in various types of tissues revealed the tissue-specific expression pattern of AhNPFs. We further examined their expression patterns at different leaf developmental stages, under abiotic/biotic stresses and nutrient deficiency. The results reveal several candidate regulators in the agave NPF family, including AhNPF4.3/5.2/7.1. We first characterized the NPF genes in agave based on published leaf transcriptome datasets and emphasized their potential functions. Background: Existing research indicates that tea drinking may exert beneficiary effects on mental health. However, associations between different types of tea intake and mental health such as depression have not been fully examined. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of green tea, fermented tea, and floral tea consumption with depressive symptoms.Methods: We used data from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, a nationwide survey on older adults in mainland China. A total of 13,115 participants (mean age 83.7 years, 54.2% were women) with valid responses were included in the analysis. The type (green, fermented [black, Oolong, white, yellow, dark, and compressed teas], and floral) and the frequency of tea consumption were recorded, and depressive symptoms were assessed using 10-item of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10). We examined the associations between the type and the frequency of tea intake and depression, controlling for a set of demographic, socioeconomic, psychosocial, behavioral, and health-related variables.Results: Overall, intakes of green tea, fermented tea, and floral tea were all significantly associated with lower prevalence of depressive symptoms, independent of other risk factors. Compared with the group of no tea intake, the adjusted ORs of depressive symptoms for daily green tea, fermented tea, and floral tea intake were 0.85 (95% CI: 0.76-0.95), 0.87 (95% CI: 0.76-0.99), and 0.70 (95% CI: 0.59-0.82), respectively. Linear associations were observed between the frequencies of all three types of tea intake and depressive symptoms (P < 0.05 for trends for all three types). The associations of the type and the frequency of tea intake and depressive symptoms were robust in several sensitivity analyses.Conclusions: Among Chinese older adults, regularly consumed any type of tea (green, fermented, or floral) were less likely to show depressive symptoms, the associations seemed more pronounced among floral tea and green tea drinkers. The virus produces severe and even fatal pneumonia; the most common clinical symptoms among infected persons include fever, shortness of breath, cough, fatigue, and abnormal chest CT. Though the virus first traveled from animal to human, it can now spread from human to human through direct transmission such as coughing, sneezing, and inhalation of droplets; and through contact with mucus membranes of oral, nasal, and eye. COVID-19 also can be transmitted through saliva and the fecal– oral route. The risk of cross-infection between patients and dental practitioners is high due to the nature of dental work, so this outbreak has made a powerful impact, both medically and economically, on the dentistry sector. Dental practitioners should have comprehensive knowledge of the virus and its route of transmission, and they should take proper precautions during dental treatments to protect themselves and their patients. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been used as a spice and medicine for over 200 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is an important plant with several medicinal, and nutritional values used in Asian and Chinese Tradition medicine. Ginger and its general compounds such as Fe, Mg, Ca, vitamin C, flavonoids, phenolic compounds (gingerdiol, gingerol, gingerdione and shogaols), sesquiterpenes, paradols has long been used as an herbal medicine to treat various symptoms including vomiting, pain, cold symptoms and it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-tumour activities, anti-pyretic, anti-platelet, anti-tumourigenic, anti-hyperglycaemic, antioxidant anti-diabetic, anti-clotting and analgesic properties, cardiotonic, cytotoxic. It has been widely used for arthritis, cramps, sprains, sore throats, rheumatism, muscular aches, pains, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, hypertension, dementia, fever and infectious diseases. Ginger leaves have also been used for food-flavouring and Asian Traditional Medicine especially in China. Ginger oil also used as food-flavouring agent in soft drink, as spices in bakery products, in confectionary items, pickles, sauces and as preservatives. Ginger is available in three forms, namely fresh root ginger, preserved ginger and dried ginger. The pharmacological activities of ginger were mainly attributed to its active phytocompounds 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, zingerone beside other phenolics and flavonoids. Gingerol and shogaol in particular, is known to have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In both Traditional Chinese Medicine, and modern China, Ginger is used in about half of all herbal prescriptions. Traditional medicinal plants are often cheaper, locally available and easily consumable raw and as simple medicinal preparations. Distress types are significant for asphalt pavement maintenance decision, and relationships among them can greatly influence the decision outcomes. In this study, to analyze the relationships among different distress types from a statistical point of view, 282 asphalt pavements with semirigid base structures in 23 regions of China were surveyed to identify 12 distress types, which were subsequently investigated by association rule mining. Results show that the distress types can be categorized into independent distress types (IDDTs), dependent distress types (DDTs), and rutting secondary distress types (RSDTs) based on the relationships. The relationships among IDDTs are the strongest, and those between IDDTs and DDTs, between rutting and RSDTs, and among depression, pumping, and raveling are also strong, while the others are weak. The weak relationships should be ignored, while the strong ones should be considered to reduce cost and guarantee accuracy of maintenance decision. The IDDTs are the most important distress types, so preventing them from occurring or maintaining them immediately can greatly preserve good performance of asphalt pavements. Drought poses a significant constraint on economic development. Drought assessment using the standardized precipitation index (SPI) uses only precipitation data, eliminating other redundant and complex calculation processes. However, the sparse stations in southwest China and the lack of information on actual precipitation measurements make drought assessment highly dependent on satellite precipitation data whose accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Fortunately, the Chengbi River Basin in Baise City is rich in station precipitation data. In this paper, based on the evaluation of the accuracy of IMERG precipitation data, geographically weighted regression (GWR), geographic difference analysis (GDA), and cumulative distribution function (CDF) are used to fuse station precipitation data and IMERG precipitation data, and finally, the fused precipitation data with the highest accuracy are selected to evaluate the drought situation. The results indicate that the accuracy of IMERG precipitation data needs to be improved, and the quality of CDF-fused precipitation data is higher than the other two. The drought analysis indicated that the Chengbi River Basin is in a cyclical drought and flood situation, and from October to December 2014, the SPI was basically between +1 and −1, showing a spatial pattern of slight flooding, normal conditions, and slight drought. Grazing exclusion has been widely implemented in degraded grassland. However, the changes of plant communities and soil nutrients in response to fencing are still controversial. Thus, the effects of free grazing, 17 and 36 years of fencing on the plant biomass and litter biomass, carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and stocks of plant, litter and soil were investigated in the temperate steppe grasslands of northern China. The results indicated that fencing increased the aboveground live biomass and litter biomass. In addition, fencing increased C, N and P stocks of aboveground live biomass, litter biomass and soil. Although root biomass and its nutrient stocks were also significantly increased by 17 years of fencing, they were decreased with fencing extending from 17 to 36 years. Moreover, there were no significant differences in aboveground live biomass and soil N and P stocks between 17 and 36 years of fencing. Litter biomass and its C, N and P stocks were positively correlated with soil C, N and P stocks. Our results demonstrated that 17 years of fencing is an effective way to restore vegetation and soil nutrients in the temperate steppe of Inner Mongolia, but a longer fencing duration has no further positive effects on biomass production and soil nutrients accumulation. Northern China has been long threatened by aeolian desertification. In recent years, all levels of the Chinese government have performed a series of ecological protection and sand control projects. To grasp the implementation effects of these projects and adjust policies in time, it is necessary to understand the process of aeolian desertification quickly and accurately. Remote sensing technologies play an irreplaceable role in aeolian desertification monitoring. In this study, the Zhenglan Banner, which is in the hinterland of the Hunshandake Sandy Land, was considered as the research area. Based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, ground survey data, and Landsat images called in Google Earth Engine (GEE), the aeolian desertified land (ADL) in 2000, 2004, 2010, 2015, and 2019 was extracted using spectral mixture analysis. A desertification index (DI) was constructed to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of the ADL in the Zhenglan Banner. Finally, a residual analysis explored the driving forces of aeolian desertification. The results showed that (1) the ADL area in the Zhenglan Banner has been trending downwards over the past 20 years but rebounded from 2004 to 2010; (2) over the past 20 years, the area of slightly, moderately, and severely desertified land has decreased at annual rates of 0.4%, 2.7%, and 3.4%, respectively; (3) human activities had significantly positive and negative impacts on the aeolian desertification trend for 20.0% and 21.0% of the study area, respectively, but not for the rest. This paper explored new techniques for rapid aeolian desertification monitoring and is of great significance for controlling and managing aeolian desertification in this region. Background: Oil tea is a type of traditional tea beverage used for treating various ailments in minority population in Guangxi, China. Our previous study showed oil tea improved glucose and lipid levels in type 2 diabetic mice. Yet, the underling molecular mechanisms are still not understood. This study aimed at assessing the effect of oil tea on glucose homeostasis and elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the oil tea-induced antidiabetic effects. Methods: Twenty seven db/db mice were gavaged with saline, metformin and oil tea for 8 weeks with measurement of biochemical profiles. A real-time2 (RT2) profiler polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array comprising 84 genes involved in glucose metabolism was measured and validated by quantitative PCR (qPCR). The association between the candidate genes and type 2 diabetes were further analyzed in a case-control study in the Chinese minority population. Results: Oil tea treatment facilitated glucose homeostasis by decreasing fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol, and improving glucose tolerance. Suppressing phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1 (PCK1) expression was observed in the oil tea treatment group and the expression was significantly correlated with fasting blood glucose levels. Target prediction and functional annotation by WEB-based GEne SeT AnaLysis Toolkit (WebGestalt) revealed that PCK1 mainly involved in the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway among the top Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database pathways. Both rs707555 and rs2071023 in PCK1 were significantly associated with type 2 diabetes in the minority population of Guangxi. Conclusion: Our findings indicated oil tea improved glucose homeostasis via down-regulation of PCK1 and PCK1 may be a genetic marker for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the association of periodontal conditions and oral hygiene habits in the Chinese patients with an aortic aneurysm (AA). Methods: A questionnaire and periodontal examinations were carried out in the AA patients and non-AA volunteers recruited from the Center for Cardiac Surgery, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University between August 2011 and June 2016. General information (e.g., height and weight), history of systemic diseases, and oral hygiene habits (e.g., brushing methods and regular oral examinations) were collected in the self-reported survey. Periodontal examinations, such as plaque index and bleeding index, were conducted in all the subjects. The correlation between periodontal indices and AA was further explored using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Our analyses revealed that 87.6% of AA patients have chronic periodontitis, which is significantly higher than that of the non-AA patients (55.8%). In addition, AA patients demonstrated more severe periodontal damages with 69.3% moderate and severe periodontitis, compared to only 16.0% in the non-AA group. Using AA as the dependent variable and all the potential risk factors as covariates (e.g., gender, age, smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia), a logistic regression analysis was performed to show clinical attachment loss (CAL) being an independent risk factor for AA (OR = 2.309, 95% CI: 1.623–3.284, p = 0.000). In comparison with the non-AA patients, more AA patients have poor oral hygiene habits and don’t have regular dental appointments for supra-gingival cleaning. Conclusion: Poor periodontal condition and dental hygiene were identified in the AA patients, suggesting that periodontitis-induced CAL may play a role in AA disease mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
