This paper describes the statistical characteristics and temporal variability of the urban heat island (UHI) intensity in Buenos Aires using 32-year surface meteorological data with 1-h time intervals. Seasonal analyses show that the UHI intensity is strongest during summer months and an 'inverse' effect is found frequently during the afternoon hours of the same season. During winter, the UHI effect is in the minimal. The interannual trend and the seasonal variation of the UHI for the main synoptic hours for a longer record of 48 years are studied and associated to changes in meteorological factors as low-level circulation and cloud amount. Despite the population growth, it was found a negative trend in the nocturnal UHI intensity that could be explained by a decline of near clear-sky conditions, a negative trend in the calm frequencies and an increase in wind speed. Urban to rural temperature differences and rural temperatures are negatively correlated for diurnal and nocturnal hours both for annual and seasonal scales. The article offers the author's insights concerning the issues raised by authors Weller, Vakulabharanam, and Kasmir in commentaries on critical social theory and accounting practices. The author says that an ethnographic field study on the empresas recuperadas in Buenos Aires, Argentina has helped her to provide an ethnographic understanding in the issues. She adds that an open-ended methodology in social economy may help understand how accounting practices may obtain greater correspondence.

This paper presents the soil water deficit and soil water surplus obtained from soil water balance in three drainage areas of Buenos Aires province for the period from 1971 to 2010. The soil water balance had been performed using the evapotranspiration formula of Penman-Monteith and considering the soil water constants: field capacity, soil water moisture, and soil wilting point for all the different types of soils of the region. The obtained soil water deficit and surplus are considered as triggers of extreme hydrologic events. Annual threshold values of 200mm of soil water deficit and 300mm of soil water surplus were considered for drought and flood, respectively. It was found that almost the 25% of the floods are severe and extreme while the 50% of droughts were of these intensities. Mann-Kendall statistical test was performed, and significance trends at level 0.1 were found for drought and for two periods, one of twenty years (1991-2010) and the other of ten years (2001-2010). As a sample of the temporal evolution of both events and their trends, the results of one locality (Junin) were deeply analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to integrate mobility as across component of the management of specific public actions. The case of study concerns the public health services in Argentina, and mother's mobility conditions in the suburban of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. In terms of methodology, the paper working on the concept of access trying to identify, measure and evaluate the relationship between mobility conditions and maternal health care. Access is weighted according to the realization of health services, and not according to the arrival at the places where they are offers. The result is innovative empirical evidence, useful as an indicator to make more relevant the role of mobility within the public agenda of transport and others specific sectors, asa basic social right behind the access that requires coordinated actions and cross-sectoral approaches. The aim of this paper is to share some similarities about what children and young people obtain from work and school. The main protagonists in the research are children and young people who try to cope with two activities: school learning and work. The objective of this paper is two-fold: on the one hand, to make visible child and adolescent work in our region, since there is not a symbolic or social recognition of it, neither from the school sector nor from people in general and, on the other hand, to show that the school/work relation is a complex one: working children have to deal with different situations in order to keep up schooling: absences, late arrivals, tiredness, temporary desertion, promotion failure, lack of time to study and do homework. Background: In some countries, "Big Events" like crises and transitions have been followed by large increases in drug use, drug injection and HIV/AIDS. Argentina experienced an economic crisis and political transition in 2001/ 2002 that affected how people use their time. This paper studies how time use changes between years 2001 and 2004, subsequent to these events, were associated with drug consumption in poor neighbourhoods of Greater Buenos Aires. Methods: In 2003-2004, 68 current injecting drug users (IDUs) and 235 young non-IDUs, aged 21-35, who lived in impoverished drug-impacted neighbourhoods in Greater Buenos Aires, were asked about time use then and in 2001. Data on weekly hours spent working or looking for work, doing housework/childcare, consuming drugs, being with friends, and hanging out in the neighbourhood, were studied in relation to time spent using drugs. Field observations and focus groups were also conducted. Results: After 2001, among both IDUs and non-IDUs, mean weekly time spent working declined significantly (especially among IDUs); time spent looking for work increased, and time spent with friends and hanging out in the neighbourhood decreased. We found no increase in injecting or non-injecting drug consumption after 2001. Subjects most affected by the way the crises led to decreased work time and/or to increased time looking for work-and by the associated increase in time spent in one's neighbourhood-were most likely to increase their time using drugs. Conclusions: Time use methods are useful to study changes in drug use and their relationships to every day life activities. In these previously-drug-impacted neighbourhoods, the Argentinean crisis did not lead to an increase in drug use, which somewhat contradicts our initial expectations. Nevertheless, those for whom the crises led to decreased work time, increased time looking for work, and increased time spent in indoor or outdoor neighbourhood environments, were likely to spend more time using drugs. These data suggest that young adults in traditionally less-impoverished neighbourhoods may be more vulnerable to Big Events than those in previously drug-impacted impoverished neighbourhoods. In this paper the author examines some advantages and limitations of the use of photoelicitation interviews in a study on class habitus, identities, and schooling in two secondary schools in the city of Buenos Aires (Argentina). First, she describes her research questions, methodological strategy, and application of photo elicitation technique, which refers to the use of a single or set of photographs as stimulus during a research interview. Second, she assesses the benefits and problems of its application by making comparisons between both different photo-interviews and interviews with and without photographs. This exercise allows the author to identify the benefits of photo-elicitation, such as the opening up of unforeseen dimensions for analysis and the facilitation of a rapport with respondents; and some disadvantages, for example, the possibility of the "closing communication" effect between researcher and participant. The ingestion of foreign bodies causing esophageal injuries is a common event, mostly in children’s population. The aim of the present paper is to present foreign body (FB) ingestion cases observed in a five-year period at the Children’s Hospital Gutierrez, Buenos Aires, Argentina and to compare the main findings with data coming from other well-known case series, already published in scientific literature. A prospective study on 320 of esophageal foreign body was carried out , with regard to age and sex distributions, type, dimensions and consistency, location, clinical presentation, removal and complications. In the majority of cases injuries happened while children were playing and in 85.3% adults were present. Children most frequently ingested coins (83.8% cases). Removal was performed in all cases under general anaesthesia, in 34 by esophageal forceps and in 286 cases by Magill hypopharyngeal forceps. Just one case showed complications, presenting esophageal perforation. The final results of this study show that injuries usually happen under adults’ supervision and highlight that FBs involved in the incident belong to classes of objects not conceived for children’s use and not suitable for their age. The paper argues that the global economy has produced changes in the hierarchical configuration of urban systems. The emerging organization tends to be more open and set up more horizontal relations among cities. There are some evidences that indicate the relative insertion of the main Latin-American cities in global networks. The paper shows the empirical evidence available to Latin-American cities and, specially, related to the Argentine case. It evaluates the tension between the historically forged trend toward geographic concentration of population and economic activities in the metropolis of Buenos Aires and other somewhat more recent trends towards dispersion, emphasizing the role of intermediate cities. The purpose of the paper is to characterize mollusk stranding on the northern coast of Buenos Aires, and to determine the mechanisms of alteration induced by storm surges on the infralittoral macroinvertebrates as well as on the morphosedimentary feature of the beach. The most common living organisms stranded on the beach were Adelomelon brasiliana and their free giant egg capsules, Amiantis purpurata, Atrina seminuda, Buccinanops duartei, Buccinanops gradatum, Buccinanops monilifer, Donax hanleyanus, Mesodesma mactroides, Mytilus edulis platensis, Tivella isabelleana, and Zidona dufresnei. Shells of Mactra isabelleana and Glycymeris longior were also found. Three mechanisms were responsible for strandings on the emerged beach: (i) storm surges related to a decrease in the wave-cut level, (ii) swell conditions with infralittoral organism remobilization in the following 7 days, and (iii) shell bar migration. The high abundance of shells found at the emerged beach is due to Mactra isabelleana, although no living individuals were found during the 6 years of survey. The predominance of G. longior shells resulted from their shape, thickness, and hardness, enriching the beach sediments. This is in contrast to other species (D. hanleyanus, Mytilus edulis platensis, and Mesodesma mactroides) whose shells cannot endure exposure to the transport and weather conditions in the swash zone and on the emerged beach. The intact condition of shells immediately after the storm indicate that they were transported from greater depths where the death of the organisms occured. This is indicated by the simultaneous presence of live stranded individuals and empty shells of the same species (T. isabelleana, Amiantis purpurata, Adelomelon brasiliana, Z. dufresnei, B. gradatum, and Mytilus edulis platensis). Between 35% and 65% of the sand are shell fragments, mostly of deeper water species. The variation in mean grain size, sorting, and skewness among samplings is attributed to shell fragmentation, while the mode remained invariable. Most of the intact shells supplied by the storm were reworked in the swash zone. The percentage of bioclasts remained invariable for 5 months and fell within the interval of 0-0.5 phi. This paper describes the development of a credit fund programme in informal settlements in Buenos Aires, Argentina, over a 15-year period from 1993 to 2007. It focuses on the creation, implementation and sustainability of credit funds for housing improvement and how these developed and changed in response to both external factors and programme dynamics. It pays particular attention to the programme's most recent phase, in which the management of the funds was decentralized into separate neighbourhood funds in three communities. It explains how each neighbourhood fund is managed, especially the role of the women who administer them. It also analyzes their respective levels of performance and considers prospects and challenges for the future. The authors conclude that credit fund initiatives based on modest financial resources have the potential not only to catalyze housing improvements but also to strengthen community capacity by delegating project management to the grassroots. In this way, when supported by a partner civil society organization with experience of intervention in the area, such initiatives can be more flexible and more sustainable than top-down interventions. The paper recommends that project funding decisions for microcredit programmes should take account of their potential to build social capacity, strengthen grassroots organizations, engage community participation and complement other local programmes (including improving relations with local government agencies), rather than focus only on financial sustainability. The paper analyses the causes of flood occurrence in the Gran La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, and the changes that have occurred since the 1970s. The area is characterized by serious deficiencies in the use and management of water resources. The main factors are: (1) flood risk information is not updated; (2) urban building organization does not consider the flood risk; (3) the topography and other physical features are not taken into account in urban development. This research considers some specific problems, especially in data availability, and suggests ways to solve them, including improved analytical methodology. One of the main objectives is to analyse flood risk in social terms, producing a map of flood risk from the "human social vulnerability" point of view. The results suggest that flood risk has increased since the 1980s and that this is associated with changes in precipitation patterns that have also been aggravated by lack of controls on urban development. The poorer areas with the lowest level of infrastructure and public services, many of them developed over the last quarter-century, are especially vulnerable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Buenos Aires has experienced sustained population growth since 1580 and now has some 13 million inhabitants. The paper considers the main environmental problems affecting the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (AMBA)?flooding, water contamination (surficial and subterraneous water), soil degradation (contamination, physical and chemical degradation and agricultural land loss), domiciliary and industrial waste disposal and sanitary landfills, mining-derived problems, expansive soils and atmospheric contamination. Studies of life expectancy (LE) in small areas of cities are relatively common in high-income countries but rare in Latin American countries. Small-area estimation methods can help to describe and quantify inequities in LE between neighborhoods and their predictors. Our objective was to analyze the distribution and spatial patterning of LE across small areas of Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA), Argentina, and its association with socioeconomic characteristics. As part of the SALURBAL project, we used georeferenced death certificates in 2015–2017 for CABA, Argentina. We used a spatial Bayesian Poisson model using the TOPALS method to estimate age- and sex-specific mortality rates. We used life tables to estimate LE at birth. We obtained data on neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics from the 2010 census and analyzed their associations. LE at birth was higher for women (median of across neighborhoods = 81.1 years) compared to men (76.7 years). We found a gap in LE of 9.3 (women) and 14.9 years (men) between areas with the highest and the lowest LE. Better socioeconomic characteristics were associated with higher LE. For example, mean differences in LE at birth in areas with highest versus lowest values of composite SES index were 2.79 years (95% CI: 2.30 to 3.28) in women and 5.61 years (95% CI: 4.98 to 6.24) in men. We found large spatial inequities in LE across neighborhoods of a large city in Latin America, highlighting the importance of place-based policies to address this gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building on ethnographic fieldwork in Buenos Aires, this article explores the social infrastructure created by Senegalese migrants, which channels newcomers into the cities' prolific economy of street vending. The article focuses on the often invisible social infrastructure that emerges when people either do not have access to, or are excluded from, formal infrastructures created by the state, city governments, or NGOs. The article highlights how established migrants shape newly arrived migrants' navigation and access to opportunities in the city to help reproduce life along a migration trajectory that fulfils social expectations in Senegal. Even though prejudice towards Bolivian immigrants is one of the main reasons for discrimination in Argentina, there is no valid measure to assess it. The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the subtle and blatant prejudice towards Bolivian immigrants scale. In addition, we tested correlations with right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, feelings towards Bolivian immigrants, and ideological self-placement. Data was collected through a convenience sample of 431 undergraduate students from Buenos Aires, with an age range from 18 to 45 years old (38.75% men and 61.25% women). Results showed adequate psychometric properties for the scale. Moreover, significant correlations between subtle and blatant prejudice and the other psychosocial variables tested were found. In a fruit crop located in the Lujan district (Buenos Aires province, Argentina), we exposed plastic bottles to the environment for three years. We explored microplastics' presence on thalli. Out of the potential five lichen species only one grew: Hyperphyscia coralloides. Microplastic particles were observed on the thalli. The present work represents the first record of H. coralloides growing on PET plastic. Considering the largest thalli size recorded, the results of the growth rate are similar in an average to those recorded for fruticose species. Finally, our results suggest that the contact of H. coralloides with microplastics may be a potential pathway for the incorporation of microplastics into ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has motivated a turn towards more agroecological food production and food sovereignty. This article aims to analyze how the agroecological actor network has emerged in and around the capital of Buenos Aires and the province of Santa Fe, in Argentina, during the pandemic. The research questions are: How has the agroecological actor network emerged during the pandemic in Argentina? In what ways are agroecological networks enacted through coupling and decoupling practices? The study is based on interviews with practitioners, and observations of online events. In our results, we show how the production of compost, exchange of seeds and experiences, governmental programs, and food fairs are coupled and assembled in the agroecological network. The agroecological network is decoupling from the conventional agroindustrial model with pesticides and chemical input, supermarkets, and the global food system. The conclusion is that the pandemic has worked as a crisis where the agroecological network has been expanded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the implications of the theoretical approach we choose to analyze the discourses of stakeholders in qualitative fieldwork. As part of this reflection I tackled the theoretical assumptions behind "action" versus "experience articulation" analytical traditions. The evidence presented was collected from 2004 to 2014 while accompanying the design, construction and management of a "social plant" for residues classification placed on "Reconquista Area", in northeast of Great Buenos Aires. Along this decade I combined traditional qualitative approach with action research, which permitted to register the changes and transformations in the discourses about the "social plant". My hypothesis is that these variations can be explained not only by context's fluctuations but transformations in social actor's subjectivities, which are reflected both in their positions among themselves and the narratives about their own stories. For over a decade, social and political scientists stress the centrality of citizen security policies within the political dynamics of the province of Buenos Aires. In general, the literature emphasizes that the Buenos Aires police is an organization with a high capacity to become autonomous and carry out security policies according to their interests, often illegal and repressive. However, recent research has emphasized the dependence of the police operation of political and social terms. In this context, the aim of the paper is to analyze which actors have the ability to influence the formulation of security policies and how. The central hypothesis of this work consider that governors are the actors with capacities and interests to pursue a policy of security of left or right according to their plan of campaign, which responds to other factors which are not the alleged police interests: mainly the ideology of the national executive and the location of the median voter. The corroboration of this hypothesis instructs on the strategic game behind securities policies and the relative autonomy of the police and the penal system in Argentina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper I propose to address the treatment of international migration by the State. In order to do so, I analyze public policies which do not focus on the subject but which impact strongly on the foreign population. Thus, I seek to shed light on logics which may obviate and/or contradict the ones established in migration laws. Such logics become evident when research is conducted from the social and symbolic margins of the State, working with a broad conceptualization of public policies. I exemplify the contributions made by this perspective with the analysis of four policies implemented by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 2004 and 2014 in the Parque Indoamericano Villa Soldati, area with one of the highest percentages of migrant population residing in this city. Lugano Lake is located in an Ecological Reserve of Buenos Aires City. Biomonitoring of its water quality is essential due to its importance as a place for recreation and protection of native species. Biomphalaria straminea is a native hermaphrodite aquatic gastropod that inhabits different freshwater bodies of Argentina and was recently selected as a potential bioindicator. We propose this study as a first approach to assessing specific organisms’ use in biomonitoring of urban wild reserves, and the usefulness of reproduction assays. B. straminea survival, behavior, reproduction success and offspring survival after the exposure to water samples from Lugano Lake (L1, L2, and L3) were evaluated. Temperature, pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen were registered in situ. Samples were transported to the laboratory and chemical analysis and bioassays were performed using 20 snails per site. A control group with tap water was added. Egg masses were separated, exposed individually and observed daily using a stereoscopic microscope. After hatching, juveniles were placed in tap water and offspring survival was registered at the first, second, third and fourth months after the beginning of the assay. High levels of conductivity, turbidity and nutrients were obtained. Ammonium and nitrite were higher than the guideline level for the protection of aquatic life. During the bioassay 20% of the snails (L2 and L3) showed abnormally protruding of the head-food region. The number of eggs and embryonated eggs per mass did not differ between treatments. Egg masses exposed to water samples from the lake presented overlapping and abnormal eggs and arrested embryos. Besides, low % of hatching (L1: 33%, L2: 42%, and L3: 16%) and juvenile survival after the first (L1:14%; L2:78%) and second month (L1: 60%) were noted. In the control group, 85% of hatching and 100%–90% of survival were observed. Our results suggests the presence of pollutant in the lake. B. straminea seems to be a sensitive local species. The opposition between the categories of shantytown and neighborhood has been crucial in the disciplinary analyses of popular habitat in Argentina. The urbanization of a shantytown in Great Buenos Aires enables us to refresh this discussion, setting the categories into motion. The ethnographic analysis of the category of neighborhood in the urbanization of Villa Torres (La Matanza) will help to explore how this shantytown is constructed as “emblem" for public policies, receiving various resources. In fact, this paper will analyze how the urbanization is legitimized through an image of the neighborhood, of the urbanization and of the people in charge of it as “gente del barrio" [people from the neighborhood] in order to show how local knowledge is implied in this public policy. This paper analyzes the official proposal for recent history teaching. For such purpose, we draw on national education laws (1993 and 2006), the curricula approved from 1995 to present for the secondary level (at the national level and at the Province of Buenos Aires) and regulations of the commemorations--especially March 24th and September 16th--. This analysis will be made in relation to the representations of memory and the progress of historiography about recent past, to consider up to what extent school contents have witnessed an impact due to changes in these narratives. In Argentina, teachers have traditionally been characterized as part of the middle class or the petty bourgeoisie, depending on the theoretical perspective. This characterization is usually based on the predominantly female composition of teachers as a group and on their character of wives of that portion of the population that occupies "relatively important positions in the social structure". However, few studies have attempted to account for this hypothesis and most of them are based on unrepresentative samples. In this paper we present an exercise based on a comparison of census data for three jurisdictions which have different features both in the recruitment of teachers and in their specific social and economic structures: Ciudad de Buenos Aires, La Pampa and Santa Cruz. The metropolitan experience refers to the many circumstances of everyday life in the metropolis and the various possible relationships between subjects and urban places, the variety of uses and meanings of space by different people (Duhau and Giglia, 2008). Following this we won't say that the urban experience is not homogeneous nor neutral but changes depending on which city from different subjects establish a relationship with the rest of the metropolis and sense of their position in it. This article is based on the analysis in a doctoral thesis focused on the experiences of homeless people in the streets of Buenos Aires City. The inhabitants of the street are single people, families, youth, etc. who should inhabit the streets of the city, making that this and their space have another meaning. From this study is that it reflected the reflections presented below on the ways of "being" a city dweller. Abstract: In December 2008 the remains of a wooden ship was discovered in Puerto Madero, down town in Buenos Aires. At preliminary observations, it would be a Spanish merchant ship from XVIII century. During the dig, remains from ship and loading were found. Among different kind of things, a sternpost gudgeon was found separated from the rest. This element has an important structural function in the ship associated with the support and guide of the rudder. The objective of the present paper is to analyze the geometric, structural and metallurgic characteristics from the mentioned artifact obtained at the archaeological site Zencity, to get a best understanding about the technology used to manufacture it, and a best knowledge of the complete finding. To this purpose, several analytical techniques were performed. First of all a visual and dimensional analysis was done on the piece. Then material was characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy and chemical composition was determined by energy dispersive X ray spectrometry (EDS). Also microhardness was measured and non metallic inclusions were analyzed. According to results the piece would have been made of forged ferrous alloy with a significant complexity in its manufacturing. It presents forge welded areas with large slag inclusions. Ferritic-pearlitic structures differentiated according to the area were detected with different grain sizes, which would indicate heterogeneous temperature of hot working. Some Adjacent areas that show different contents of carbon were identified indicating the use of different materials, especially to form parts of larger thickness. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents the results of a study on three species, of which commercialize products considered adaptogens: Lepidium meyenii Walp. (Brassicaceae), "maca", Morinda citrifolia L. (Rubiaceae), "noni", and Petiveria alliacea L. (Phytolaccaceae), "pipi". The data come from an Urban Ethnobotany study conducted in Buenos Aires-La Plata conurbation. The traditional uses of the species, their access routes, marketing and diffusion as dietary supplements in urban pluricultural context are presented, as well as current modes of use and related knowledge which are part of local botanical knowledge. Thus, modifications in the uses originally assigned as result of the expansion of the products in the context of globalization are evaluated, well as the consequent changes in traditional patterns of knowledge, beliefs and practices related to these plant resources.
