Active orogens balance tectonic rock uplift with erosion, commonly via river incision coupled to landslide denudation of “threshold” hillslopes, but sediment’s role in this feedback is unclear. We report fluvial geometry and sediment size, prevalence, and mobility across two ≤600-m-tall gneissic northern Alaska Range anticlines that sustain steep landslide-clad hillslopes but differ 10× in late Pleistocene–recent rock uplift rate. Enigmatically, the river steepens and narrows prominently across the fold experiencing slow surface uplift (∼0.5 mm/ yr) but remains low-gradient and wide downstream across the anticline undergoing rapid differential rock uplift (∼5 mm/yr). Frequent bedload mobilization across both folds implies fluvial equilibration to sediment transport despite discrepant channel forms and similarly prevalent hillslope-derived boulders. Boulder prevalence correlates significantly with channel slope and width on the slowly uplifting anticline, but weakly on the rapidly uplifting anticline. Strong correlations across the tectonically quiescent anticline may reflect local incision-suppressing boulder aggradation that forces the channel to steepen and narrow, consistent with field observations. Conversely, weak correlations across the rapidly uplifting anticline imply that boulders may modulate expected tectonic channel adjustment by preferentially aggrading to subdue slope, and deflecting frequently mobile bedload to drive lateral erosion that maintains channel width, steepens adjacent hillslopes, and perpetuates hillslope-channel coupling. Hence, hillslope-derived boulders may occupy important roles in regulating feedbacks between river incision and landslide erosion that differ fundamentally at high and low tectonic rates. The present paper develops a new framework to predict the mean flow through an array of cylinders in which the flow around the array (array‐scale) and the flow around individual cylinders (element‐scale) are modeled separately using actuator disc theory and empirical drag models respectively, and then coupled through the net drag force. Applying this framework only requires knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations for arrays of between 7 and 109 cylinders having different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and bounding shapes (circular, square) in both two‐ and three‐dimensional flows. In general, the framework outperforms existing models which require calibration and are only valid for part of the practical parameter space. The demonstrated scale separation suggests different combinations of element‐scale and array‐scale models/theories may be used for other arrangements of bluff bodies. To develop this predictive capacity, this study uses the idea of scale separation to integrate models from different research fields, including the actuator disc theory originally developed for design of turbines and propellers, and element‐scale drag models initially proposed for aquatic vegetated flows, to develop a unifying, predictive, analytical framework to estimate the mean flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations of arrays of cylinders with different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and array shapes (square, circular). With only knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow, the framework predicts the mean flow exceptionally well across a wide range of practical flow conditions. This leads to a step‐change in our ability to predict the fraction of incoming flow passing through a porous array, hydrodynamic load on offshore structures, and sediment flux within aquatic vegetation systems when combined with bed load transport models. The framework could be an important guide for coastal and riverine restoration projects using aquatic vegetation and the design of offshore structures and turbine farms. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. Plain Language Summary: Bouncing sediment grains batter the bedrock beds of rivers during floods. As these impacts collide with the bed, they slowly chip away at the riverbed bedrock. It's perhaps intuitive that a grain with more energy when it collides with the riverbed is able to chip away more bedrock. But, how much more destructive are these high energy impacts? We designed an experiment where we hit a bedrock sample with a steel ball at a range of impact energies, over and over again, up to 30,000 times, and measured how much material was chipped away. High energy impacts eroded more material, but this increased efficiency of erosion is not fully captured by impact‐based erosion models. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We liken the relative influence of these high energy impacts to a battering ram, where only a few strikes can easily break down a door, whereas lower energy impacts, similar to a simple knock, are unlikely to achieve the same result. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Sediment transport remains a significant challenge for researchers due to the intricate nature of the physical processes involved and the diverse characteristics of watercourses worldwide. A type of watercourse that is of particular interest for study is the ephemeral streams, found primarily in semiarid and arid regions. Due to their unique nature, a new measurement algorithm was created and a modified bed load sampler was built. Measurement of the bed load transport rate and calculation of the water discharge were conducted in an ephemeral stream in Northeastern Greece, where the mean calculated streamflow rate ranged from 0.019 to 0.314 m3/s, and the measured sediment load transport rates per unit width varied from 0.00001 to 0.00213 kg/m/s. The sediment concentration was determined through various methods, including nonlinear regression equations and formulas developed by Yang, with the coefficients of these formulas calibrated accordingly. The results demonstrated that the equations derived from Yang's multiple regression analysis offered a superior fit compared to the original equations. As a result, two modified versions of Yang's stream sediment transport formulas were developed and are presented to the readership. To assess the accuracy of the modified formulas, a comparison was conducted between the calculated total sediment concentrations and the measured total sediment concentrations based on various statistical criteria. The analysis shows that none of Yang's original formulas fit the available data well, but after optimization, both modified formulas can be applied to the specific ephemeral stream. The results indicate also that the formulas derived from the nonlinear regression can be successfully used for the determination of the total sediment concentration in the ephemeral stream and have a better fit compared to Yang's formulas. The correlation from the nonlinear regression equations suggests that total sediment transport is primarily influenced by water discharge and rainfall intensity, with the latter showing a high correlation coefficient of 0.998. This study examines the spatial pattern of fractional sediment mobility and assesses the influence of morphologic units on bedload transport in a small pool‐riffle reach with limited supply. Using a 2D hydraulic model and a subsurface‐based sediment transport model, shear stresses, fractional sediment mobility, and bedload transport were examined for flow events ranging in magnitude between 0.2Qbf and 1.5Qbf. Results reveal that while spatial variations in shear stress decrease as discharge increases, only a small proportion of the bed experiences high transport rates. At the reach scale, riffles are the primary morphological unit contributing to fully mobile sediment for all size fractions. However, at a subunit scale, there is evidence of sediment transport reversal for grains >32 mm at flows near or exceeding bankfull discharge in association with shear stress reversal. These transport reversals are important for maintaining pools despite their infrequent occurrence in the study reach. Sediment transport maps indicate that bed morphology considerably influences sediment transport at low to moderate flows. During these events, the shear stress is sensitive to local bed topography and partial mobility is the dominant transport process. In contrast, variations in bedload transport rates decrease during high flows when the flow is less sensitive to variations in bed topography and the bed becomes fully mobile. Bedload sediment transport plays an important role in the evolution of rivers, marshes and deltas. In these aquatic environments, vegetation is widespread, and plant species have unique morphology. However, the impact of real plant morphology on flow and sediment transport has not been quantified. This study used model plants with real plant morphology, based on the aquatic species Phragmites australis, Acorus calamus and Typha latifolia. The frontal area of these species increases away from the bed, which leads to higher near‐bed velocity than would be predicted from depth‐average frontal area. A plant morphology coefficient was defined to quantify the impact of vertically‐varied plant frontal area. Laboratory experiments confirmed that the plant morphology coefficient improved the prediction of near‐bed velocity, near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy and bedload transport rate in canopies with realistic morphology. Plant morphology can alter transport rates by up to an order of magnitude, relative to the assumption of uniform morphology. By incorporating this parameter, our new model improves the prediction of sediment transport in vegetated regions. The Rhine River is affected by major human interventions affecting its morphology and sediment regime, which have severely changed its flow and sediment transport. While channelization has increased the sediment transport capacity in the free-flowing sections, the sediment retention behind dams has caused a bedload deficit downstream and has additionally intensified riverbed erosion. The resulting consequences range from the exposure of less erodible sediment layers that pose obstacles for navigation, to the scouring of infrastructure, the lowering of groundwater levels, and multiple negative ecological consequences. To optimize the efficiency of countermeasures, a coherent overview of all sediment-related activities and the state of knowledge on the Rhine catchment is required. That is why the present study aims to give a catchment-wide overview in this regard, identify knowledge gaps and proposing a future research programme. The methodological approach includes a comprehensive literature review and online interviews with experts from six riparian countries working in the fields of sediment research and management. Based on our investigations, we have derived several research topics, each consisting of research questions. Three project ideas were defined that should primarily be realized: (i) the influence of climate change and land use change on the sediment regime; (ii) alteration and improvement of the sediment balance and continuity, sediment transport, and morphology; and (iii) national and bilateral projects on sediment transport processes and management. This paper presents a review of cross-shore sediment transport for non-cohesive sediments in the coastal zone. The principles of sediment incipient motion are introduced. Formulations for the estimation of bedload transport are presented, for currents and combined waves and current flows. A method to consider the effect of sediment heterogeneity on transport, using the hiding–exposure coefficient and hindrance factor, is depicted. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the influence of substrate level difference and material composition on dam break wave evolution over two different erodible beds. Utilizing the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method, we tracked free surface advection and reproduced wave evolution using experimental data from the literature. For model validation, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis encompassed mesh resolution, turbulence simulation methods, and bed load transport equations. The implementation of Large Eddy Simulation (LES), non-equilibrium sediment flux, and van Rijn's (1984) bed load formula yielded higher accuracy compared to alternative approaches. The findings emphasize the significant effect of substrate level difference and material composition on dam break morphodynamic characteristics. Decreasing substrate level disparity led to reduced flow velocity, wavefront progression, free surface height, substrate erosion, and other pertinent parameters. Initial air entrapment proved substantial at the wavefront, illustrating pronounced air-water interaction along the bottom interface. The Shields parameter experienced a one-third reduction as substrate level difference quadrupled, with the highest near-bed concentration observed at the wavefront. This research provides fresh insights into the complex interplay of factors governing dam break wave propagation and morphological changes, advancing our comprehension of this intricate phenomenon. The grain size 2 mm is the conventional border between sand and gravel. This size is used extensively, and generally without much physical justification, to discriminate between such features as sedimentary deposit type (clast-supported versus matrix-supported), river type (gravel bed versus sand bed), and sediment transport relation (gravel versus sand). Here we inquire as to whether this 2 mm boundary is simply a social construct upon which the research community has decided to agree or whether there is some underlying physics. We use dimensionless arguments to show the following for typical conditions on Earth, i.e., natural clasts (e.g., granitic or limestone) in 20 ∘ C water. As grain size ranges from 1 to 5 mm (a narrow band including 2 mm), sediment suspension becomes vanishingly small at normal flood conditions in alluvial rivers. We refer to this range as pea gravel. We further show that bedload movement of a clast in the pea gravel range with, for example, a size of 4 mm moving over a bed of 0.4 mm particles has an enhanced relative mobility compared to a clast with a size of 40 mm moving over a bed of the same 4 mm particles. With this in mind, we use 2 mm here as shorthand for the narrow pea gravel range of 1–5 mm over which transport behavior is distinct from both coarser and finer material. The use of viscosity allows the delineation of a generalized dimensionless bed grain size discriminator between "sand-like" and "gravel-like" rivers. The discriminator is applicable to sediment transport on Titan (ice clasts in flowing methane/ethane liquid at reduced gravity) and Mars (mafic clasts in flowing water at reduced gravity), as well as Earth. The difficulties of measuring bedload transport in gravel-bed rivers have given rise to the morphological method wherein sediment transport can be inferred from changes in riverbed elevation and estimates of the distance traveled by sediment: its path length. Because current methods for estimating path length are time- and labor-intensive, we present a method to estimate a characteristic path length from repeat digital elevation models (DEMs of difference, i.e., DoDs). We propose an automated method to extract the spacing between erosional and depositional sites on the DoD by the application of variational mode decomposition (VMD), a signal processing method, to quantify the spacing as a proxy for path length. We developed this method using flume experiments where bed topography and sediment flux were measured and then applied it to published field data with physical path length measured from tracer measurements. Our sediment transport estimates were not significantly different than the measured sediment flux at lower discharges in the lab. However, we observed an underestimation of sediment flux at the higher discharges in the flume study. We interpret this as a limit of the method in confined settings, where sediment transport becomes decoupled from morphological changes. We also explore how the time between survey acquisitions, the morphological active width relative to the channel width, and DoD thresholding techniques affect the proposed method and the potential issues they pose for the morphological method in general. Based on measurements with the Swiss plate geophone system with a 1 min temporal resolution, bedload transport fluctuations were analysed as a function of the flow and transport conditions in the Swiss Erlenbach stream. The study confirms a finding from an earlier event-based analysis of the same bedload transport data, which showed that the disequilibrium ratio of measured to calculated transport rate (disequilibrium condition) influences the sediment transport behaviour. To analyse the transport conditions, the following elements were examined to characterise bedload transport fluctuations: (i) the autocorrelation coefficient of bedload transport rates as a function of lag time (memory effect), (ii) the critical discharge at the start and end of a transport event, (iii) the variability in the bedload transport rates, and (iv) a hysteresis index as a measure of the strength of bedload transport during the rising and falling limb of the hydrograph. This study underlines that above-average disequilibrium conditions, which are associated with a larger sediment availability on the streambed, generally have a stronger effect on subsequent transport conditions than below-average disequilibrium conditions, which are associated with comparatively less sediment availability on the streambed. The findings highlight the important roles of the sediment availability on the streambed, the disequilibrium ratio, and the hydraulic forcing in view of a better understanding of the bedload transport fluctuations in a steep mountain stream. The piers of the bridge can change the flow pattern in the river. This means the hydraulic conditions of the river can be changed, including the increased shear stress at the bottom of the river or natural channel that has the potential to cause scour. The investigation of the flow pattern around the piers on the channel is needed to consider which parts of the piers are sensitive to scour and to analyze the flow phenomena around the piers. So, this study will investigate the flow and its effect on the scour around the piers with different geometric shapes. This study uses a fluid flow model coupled to the sediment scour model, including the Meyer Peter Muller sediment transport equation. The result of this study was obtained for one circular pier; the bed load calibration parameter was 8, and the channel roughness calibration parameter was 2.5. The calculations of scour height, scour angle and flow have a fairly good similarity. Then, these calibration parameters are used to simulate flow and scour on two circular piers, two circular end piers, and two triangular end piers. The modeling results show that there are maximum scours with the same depth of 0.04 m, but the scouring patterns are different. The maximum shear stresses obtained successively by two circular end piers, two triangular end piers, and two circular piers are 0.315 N/m2, 0.366 N/m2, and 0.29 N/m2. Bedload transport in a river is a deeply analyzed problem, with many methodologies available in the literature. However, most of the existing methods were developed for reaches of rivers rather than for confluences and are suitable for a particular type of material, which makes them very inaccurate in cases where the sediments are comprised of a mix of different types of soil. This study considers the effect of two different bed sediment sizes, gravel and sand, in relation to bed load transport in a confluence. Five well-known and validated equations (namely Meyer-Peter and Müller, Parker + Engelund and Hansen, Ackers and White, and Yang) are applied to the case study of the Tagus–Alberche rivers confluence (in Talavera de la Reina, Spain), where main and tributary rivers transport different materials (sand and gravel). Field works in the area of the confluence were conducted, and a set of alluvial samples were collected and analyzed. The previously mentioned methods were employed to analyze the geomorphology in the confluence area and downstream of it under different flooding scenarios, concluding different trends in terms of deposition/erosion in the area under historic flooding scenarios. When the trends show erosion, all methods are very consistent in terms of numerical predictions. However, the results present high disparity in the estimated values when the predictions suggest deposition, with Parker + Engelund and Hansen yielding the highest volumes and Meyer-Peter and Müller the lowest (the latter being around 1% of the former). Yang and Ackers and White predict deposits in the same range in all cases (around 15% of Parker and Engelund Hansen). Yang's formula was found to be suitable for the confluences of rivers with different materials, allowing for the estimation of sediment transport for different grain sizes. With the onset of winter in cold regions, border ice begins to form, impacting sediment transport rate and distribution. Understanding the effect of ice cover is crucial in regions with prolonged sub-freezing temperatures, as water bodies remain frozen for a considerable part of the year. While the existing literature includes many studies on sediment transport in open channel flow and several studies on completely ice-covered flow, there is limited research on sediment transport in partially ice-covered channels. Addressing this gap, the current study conducted laboratory experiments in a rectangular flume at the Hydraulics Research and Testing Facility, University of Manitoba, Canada. The investigation focused on examining the influence of asymmetric border ice, varying coverage ratios in asymmetric partially ice-covered flow, and changing flow strengths on bedload transport rate and distribution. Additionally, a comparison was made with symmetric partially ice-covered flow conditions. The findings indicate that the presence of asymmetric border ice indeed affected the bedload transport distribution within the channel, causing non-uniform bedload transport distribution across the channel width, with peak values concentrated in the center of the open flow section. Increased asymmetry in border ice leads to greater asymmetry in bedload transport rate distribution. Despite these pronounced differences in bedload transport rate across the channel width, the cross-section-averaged bedload transport rate could still be estimated utilizing the conventional equations, used for open channel flow, fully ice-covered flow, and symmetric partially ice-covered flow, with the effect of ice cover accounted for by incorporating an additional boundary in the calculation of the wetted perimeter, leading to adjustments in the flow strength. The increase in bedrock channel width and the decline in bedrock channel slope with increasing drainage area are fundamental characteristics of mountainous landscapes. Compared with slope, little is known about controls on steady‐state bedrock channel width. We model steady‐state bedrock channel width by iteratively solving models for bed and bank erosion by impacting bedload, using measurable physical parameters, including uplift rate, water discharge, sediment supply, grain size, rock strength, and bank angle. The results indicate that width is largely controlled by sediment flux, rather than water discharge. The commonly used width‐discharge scaling relation is an artifact of the covariance of sediment flux and water discharge. Scaling up from cross‐section to drainage basin scales, our model reproduces the width‐drainage area scaling relation and suggests that the scaling exponent is largely controlled by the downstream change in the fraction of total sediment supply transported as bedload. Plain Language Summary: Bedrock rivers become wider and less steep as water flows from upstream to downstream in mountainous landscapes. The reasons why bedrock channels widen are poorly understood. Here, we develop a method to predict typical channel width based on the mechanism of bedrock erosion by impacting sediment particles. The formation of bed form in alluvial rivers due to sediment transport has a significant effect on the hydraulic parameters of the flow such as bed shear stress. The formation of the bed form and its shape and geometry depends on the bed shear stress. Therefore, the relationship between bed form and flow parameters (such as bed shear stress) is complicated. In the present study; the effect of dune bed forms with different heights on bed shear stress has been investigated. Artificial dunes made by sand-cement mortar with a length of 25 cm and heights of 1, 2, 3, and 4 cm were used. In the tests of this research, flow discharge of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 l/s and bed slopes of 0, 0.0001, 0.0005, 0.001, and 0.0015 were used. The results showed that with increasing the relative submergence and Δ/λ, the bed shear stress increased in dune-covered beds. The formation of the dune bed form and the increase in its height leads to an increase in the bed shear stress. The bed shear stress in dunes with a height of 1, 2, 3, and 4 cm was, on average, 39, 80, 141, and 146% more than in plane beds, respectively. Moreover, form shear stress for dunes with a height of 1, 2, 3, and 4 cm was, on average, 27.37, 43, 57.11, and 58.74% of the total shear stress, respectively.

The rates of incision and aggradation in the channels in the Terek River basin (North Caucasus) for the last 50–85 years were estimated at 18 gauging stations. The stage–discharge method (annual low water stages at the same discharges) was applied. The stability of the Terek River channel was recorded on the tectonically subsiding Tersko–Kuma Lowland. On the subsiding Kabardian Plain, channel aggradation up to 14 mm a−1 was registered. The rapid (~32 mm a−1) incision of the Terek River occurs within the antecedent valley of the rising Sunzha Ridge, causing regressive erosion and incision (~25 mm a−1) of rivers on the Ossetian Plain, despite its tectonic subsiding. The rivers in the uplifting mountains of the North Caucasus transport the sediments delivered from slopes as climatically controlled debris flows. Aggradation and incision here alternate without a visible overall trend. The rates of modern channel bed deformations are 10 to 100 times higher than the mean rates of tectonic movements. The main effect of tectonics is the changes in river channel slopes, which cause changes in the bed load transport budget and channel bed deformation. Reservoirs overflow during flood season because of sedimentation cycles, which severely affects their effectiveness. Siltation is a major problem in dams constructed in waterways in arid and semi-arid areas. Therefore, the reservoirs in wadis lose their capacity due to sedimentation. This study determines an optimal design of the trapping basin on steep slope areas for Wadi Bishah in the Asir region of southwestern Saudi Arabia. The empirical design criteria of the sediment-trapping basin is used to mitigate the effects of sedimentation in the King Fahd Dam. The empirical design of the trapping basin constructed upstream of the dam located in the wadi is presented. Moreover, the annual suspended and bed sediment load (Qs and Qb) techniques for estimating the volume of sediments are used, and the relationship between the sediment trapping efficiency and size is determined. The sediment trapping in Wadi Bishah upstream sediment-trapping basins is selected to reduce the amount of sediment. One of the important results of this study tries to create a new concept to trap sediment in wadis, which are located in arid and semi-arid areas. The results obtained were evaluated using theoretical and empirical equations to determine the appropriate size of the basin. The results demonstrate that the optimal dimensions for the sediment confinement basin are Lb × Wb × hs = 3500 × 500 × 1.5 m. Also, for these dimensions, the basin efficiency was assumed to be in the range of 60–70%. The trap basin should be constructed at open check dams upstream (U/S) of the proposed basin to enhance its efficiency. Further investigation is required to understand the transport and deposition of sediments, particularly fine sediments in the basin. Additionally, the effects of sediment traps in Wadi Bishah should be assessed during the construction of these structures to aid water resource management and mitigate flood disasters. Bedload sediment transport is an ubiquitous process in natural surface water flows (rivers, dams, coast, etc), but it also plays a key role in catastrophic events such as dyke erosion or dam breach collapse. The bedload transport mechanism can be under equilibrium state, where solid rate and flow carry capacity are balanced, or under non-equilibrium (non-capacity) conditions. Extremely transient surface flows, such as dam/dyke erosive collapses, are systems which always change in space and time, hence absolute equilibrium states in the coupled fluid/solid transport rarely exist. Intuitively, assuming non-equilibrium conditions in transient flows should allow to estimate correctly the bedload transport rates and the bed level evolution. To get insight into this topic, a 2D Finite Volume model for bedload transport based on the non-capacity approach is proposed in this work. This non-equilibrium model considers that the actual bedload sediment discharge can be delayed, spatial and temporally, from the instantaneous solid carry capacity of the flow. Furthermore, the actual solid rate and the adaptation length/time is governed by the temporal evolution of the bedload transport layer and the vertical exchange solid flux. The model is tested for the simulation of overtopping dyke erosion and dambreach opening cases. Numerical results seems to support that considering non-equilibrium conditions for the bedload transport improves the general agreement between the computed results and measured data in both benchmarking cases. Bedload sediment transport is critical in the natural river environmental and ecological system. It is quite challenging to measure the bedload sediment transport rate in rivers with any degree of accuracy. In this study, the authors developed the Gravel Pressure and Voice Synchronous observation system (GPVS) to estimate the bedload sediment transport rate in rivers. The core of the GPVS includes an underwater high-fidelity audio recorder and pressure sensor. The audio recorder is intended to monitor the low bedload sediment transport rate, whereas the pressure sensor is utilized to detect relatively substantial bedload sediment transport. The GPVS is tested by running flume experiments with natural gravel to evaluate the system's reliability and feasibility. Results reveal that the GPVS has a very high sensitivity for detecting bedload transport. Prediction of bed load sediment transport rates in rivers is a notoriously difficult problem due to inherent variability in river hydraulics and channel morphology. Machine learning (ML) offers a compelling approach to leverage the growing wealth of bed load transport observations towards the development of a data-driven predictive model. We present an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting bed load transport rates informed by 8117 measurements from 134 rivers. Inputs to the model were river discharge, flow width, bed slope, and four bed surface sediment sizes. A sensitivity analysis showed that all inputs to the ANN model contributed to a reasonable estimate of bed load flux. At individual sites, the ANN model was able to reproduce observed sediment rating curves with a variety of shapes without site-specific calibration. The formation of bed form in alluvial rivers due to sediment transport has a significant effect on the hydraulic parameters of the flow such as bed shear stress. The formation of the bed form and its shape and geometry depends on the bed shear stress. Therefore, the relationship between bed form and flow parameters (such as bed shear stress) is complicated. In the present study; the effect of dune bed forms with different heights on bed shear stress has been investigated. Artificial dunes made by sand-cement mortar with a length of 25 cm and heights of 1, 2, 3, and 4 cm were used. In the tests of this research, flow discharge of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 l/s and bed slopes of 0, 0.0001, 0.0005, 0.001, and 0.0015 were used. The results showed that with increasing the relative submergence and Δ/λ, the bed shear stress increased in dune-covered beds. The formation of the dune bed form and the increase in its height leads to an increase in the bed shear stress. The bed shear stress in dunes with a height of 1, 2, 3, and 4 cm was, on average, 39, 80, 141, and 146% more than in plane beds, respectively. This study focuses on the numerical investigation of the 3D hydrodynamic processes of coastal zones such as wave breaking, wave-induced currents, and sediment transport, using the multiphase, interFoam solver of OpenFOAM® (a state-of-the-art, open-source CFD numerical tool). The numerical scheme is suitably framed by initial conditions of wave propagation and absorption using waves2Foam wave library. The turbulence closure problem is handled using a buoyancy modified k–ω SST model. In order to predict the sediment transport rate due to waves and currents (bed load, sheet flow, and suspended load over ripples), a transport-rate formula involving unsteady aspects of the sand transport phenomenon is implemented. For the suspended load in the surf zone, the Bailard formula is adopted after considering that the dissipation mechanism is the wave breaking. Bedload sediment transport in rivers can cause impacts, such as bed erosion/deposition, sandbank formation and changes in flow capacity. Bedload sampling techniques have limitations related to spatial and temporal resolution. These constraints are more relevant in rivers with dunes and high sediment transport. This paper presents a comparison between bedload transport rates estimated with direct and indirect methods in a river with sand dunes. The case study area is a stretch of the Taquari River, in Brazil. Surveys were carried out on three consecutive days, during a flood season. A SonTek M9-ADCP with HydroSurveyor capabilities activated was used to simultaneously measure bathymetry and water velocities throughout a river reach, and also to perform moving-bed tests at six verticals along a predefined cross-section. A mechanical trap (Helley–Smith) was used to collect bedload samples at the same time and positions where the moving-bed tests were performed. Sediment transport was calculated and compared following different approaches: (1) ADCP-BT (Bottom Tracking); (2) modified ISSDOTv2 method (dune tracking); (3) HelleySmith mechanical trap; (4) and five empirical equations. The results showed good agreement between the methodologies, indicating the potential of using ADCPs for hydro sedimentological studies due to the advantages of integrating bathymetry, flow velocity and bedload data. We present the implementation of a new fully distributed multiclass soil erosion module. The model is based on a 2D finite volume solver (Iber+) for the 2D shallow water equations that computes the overland flow water depths and velocities. From these, the model evaluates the transport of sediment particles due to bed load and suspended load, including rainfall-driven and runoff-driven erosion processes, and using well-established physically-based formulations. The evolution of the mass of sediment particles in the soil layer is computed from a mass conservation equation for each sediment class. The solver is implemented using High Performance Computing techniques that take advantage of the computational capabilities of standard Graphical Processing Units, achieving speed-ups of two orders of magnitude relative to a sequential implementation on the CPU. Floodplains are really important for the environment as they provide various functions for waterways, including ecological, hydrological, and geomorphic ones. During overbank flows, there are complex hydrodynamic conditions that occur as water interacts with the rough floodplain vegetation and drag forces due to the vegetation that changes the flow pattern. However, we still don't fully understand how floodplain vegetation influences channel-altering hydrodynamic forces and sediment transport. To address this, we conducted flume experiments and measured flow pattern and sediment transport under varied floodplain geometry and rigid and flexible conditions. For this purpose, a physical model was constructed in the laboratory, in which plastic rods with a diameter of 10 mm will be used as trees, and artificial grass will be grass vegetation. Thus, 36 experiments were conducted in which the sedimentation and hydraulic parameters of the flow were calculated by measuring the flow velocity, water surface, and sediment transport rate. The results show that in the floodplain with dense (rigid and flexible) vegetation, the friction coefficient (f) is even 1.5 times higher than in the floodplain without vegetation. The parameters such as flow velocity, bed shear stress and Darcy Weissbach friction coefficient increase in the vertical plane between the main channel and floodplains due to the difference in roughness between the main channel and floodplains. In addition, in the main channel, the flow resistance is almost constant and does not depend on the vegetation density. The Darcy-Weissbach friction coefficient is greatly increased in the presence of grass and tree vegetation on the floodplain, and the larger contribution of f is due to the grass vegetation. The results also showed the sediment transport rate has a direct relationship with the angle of divergence and density of vegetation and an inverse relationship with the relative depth of the flow. Therefore, as the sediment transport rate decreases in the diverging compound channel, the wavelength and height of the dunes increase. At smaller divergence angles, the dunes tend to the top of the zero line (the level of the sediments before the formation of the bed form). In the presence of vegetation, due to the increase in the roughness ratio of the floodplain to the main channel, the contribution of the main channel to the flow rate increases. Channel processes under high-magnitude flow events are of central interest to river science and management as they may produce large volumes of sediment transport and geomorphic work. However, bedload transport processes under these conditions are poorly understood due to data collection limitations and the prevalence of physical models that restrict feedbacks surrounding morphologic adjustment. The extension of mechanistic bedload transport equations to gravel-bed rivers has emphasised the importance of variance in both entraining (shear stress) and resisting (grain size) forces, especially at low excess shear stresses. Using a fixed-bank laboratory model, we tested the hypothesis that bedload transport in rivers collapses to a more simple function (i.e. with mean shear stress and median grain size) under high excess shear stress conditions. Bedload transport was well explained by the mean shear stress (1D approach) calculated using the depth–slope product. Numerically modelling shear stress to account for the variance in shear stress (2D) did not substantially improve the correlation. Critical dimensionless shear stress values were back-calculated and were higher for the 2D approach compared to the 1D. This result suggests that 2D critical values account for the relatively greater influence of high shear stresses, whereas the 1D approach assumes that the mean shear stress is sufficient to mobilise the median grain size. While the 2D approach may have a stronger conceptual basis, the 1D approach performs unreasonably well under high excess shear stress conditions. We formulate the bedload sediment flux probability distribution from the Lagrangian dynamics of individual grains. Individual particles obey Langevin equations wherein the stochastic forces driving particle motions are switched on and off by particle entrainment and deposition. The flux is calculated as the rate of many such particles crossing a control surface within a specified observation time. Flux distributions inherit observation time dependence from the on–off motions of particles. At the longest observation times, distributions converge to sharp peaks around classically expected values, but at short times, fluctuations are erratic. We relate this scale dependence of bedload transport rates to the movement characteristics of individual sediment grains. To implement soil conservation approaches, it is necessary to estimate the amount of annual sediment production from a watershed. The purpose of this study was to determine the erosion intensity and sedimentation rate from a watershed by employing empirical models, including the modified Pacific Southwest Inter-Agency Committee (MPSIAC), the erosion potential method (EPM), and Fournier. Moreover, the accuracy of these empirical models was studied based on field measurements. Field measurements were conducted along two reaches of Babolroud River. Total sediment transport, including suspended load and bed load, was predicted. Bed load transport rate was measured using a Helly–Smith sampler, and suspended load discharge was calculated by a sediment rating curve. The results of this study indicate that the erosion intensity coefficient (Z) of the Babolroud watershed is 0.54, with a deposition rate of 166.469 m3/(km2.year). Due to the existence of unusable crops, the highest amount of erosion appeared in the northern region of the watershed. The results using the EPM and MPSIAC models were compared with field measurements and indicated that both models provided good accuracy, with differences of 22.42% and 20.5% from the field results, respectively. Tidal current asymmetry (TCA) often occurs in coastal regions. It can significantly influence bedload sediment transport. Recently, the statistical skewness of the tidal current velocity was calculated to represent the TCA. In archipelagic region, the tidal current directions vary temporally and spatially from channel to channel. This creates complexity in finding the flood–ebb axis about which to discuss the axial dissymmetry of tidal currents. In the present work, a method that involves taking the main flood direction (MFD) as the axis to split the tidal current was suggested. The MFD is the most probable direction of the strongest flood flow during each tidal cycle. The method was applied in an archipelagic region: The Zhoushan Islands. The results show that the calculated skewness well represented the TCA in waters around islands, and the degree of the TCA was mainly determined by the residual current. When the direction of the residual current was the same as the MFD, the skewness was positive, which indicated flood dominance. On the contrary, when the direction of the residual current was opposite to the MFD, the skewness was negative, which indicated ebb dominance. The stronger a residual current is, the more significant the TCA will be. Islands play an important role in forming residual circulations. Large ones force flows to move offshore around headlands or along curved channels, because of centrifugal forcing, while small ones often cause segregated flood/ebb conduits and form residual circulations. In the waterways between the Zhoushan Islands, the ebb current generally carries more sediment than the flood current. Therefore, ebb dominance always means sediment is more likely to be deposited, and vice versa. Further research into sediment transport modeling is suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate steady current scour around rectangular and square subsea caissons. The caissons, which are representative of subsea structures, have a submerged height ranging from 0.5 to several times their longest base dimension. The flow model used is based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and the scour model simulates bed load and suspended load transport to predict the evolution of the seabed profile. The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanisms of local scour, specifically the contribution of the horseshoe vortex and the local streamline contraction near the caisson corners to local scour. The model is validated through comparisons with experimental measurements, indicating reasonable agreement. Based on the numerical model results, the mechanisms of local scour around square and rectangular caissons are found to be qualitatively similar. If the flow is directed perpendicular to one of the caisson faces, both the horseshoe vortex and the local streamline contraction contribute to scour. The maximum scour depth is located at the two upstream corners of the caisson due to the combined effects of the horseshoe vortex and streamline contraction. When the flow approaches the caisson with a diagonal attack angle of 45°, the two upstream faces act like a streamlined wedge that splits the incoming flow. The study found that the horseshoe vortex almost disappears and the scour is primarily caused by the local velocity amplification at the two side corners. If the flow attack angle is 45°, the scour does not initiate near the upstream corner without the contribution from the horseshoe vortex. A Reynolds-averaged two-phase Eulerian model for sediment transport, SedFoam, is utilized in a two-dimensional domain for a given sediment grain size, flow period, and mobility number to study the asymmetric and skewed flow effects on the sediment transport over coarse-sand migrating ripples. First, the model is validated with a full-scale water tunnel experiment of orbital ripple driven by acceleration skewed (asymmetric) oscillatory flow with good agreement in the flow velocity, net sediment transport, and ripple migration rate. The model results showed that the asymmetric flow causes a net onshore sediment transport of both suspended and near-bed load (the conventional bed load and part of the near-bed suspended load, responsible for ripple migration). The suspended load transport is driven by the "positive phase-lag" effect, while the near-bed transport is due to the large erosion of the boundary layer on the stoss flank, sediment avalanching on the lee flank, and the returning flux induced by the stoss vortex. Together, these processes result in a net onshore transport rate. In contrast, for an energetic velocity skewed (skewed) flow, the net transport rate is offshore directed. This is due to a larger offshore-directed suspended load transport rate, resulting from the "negative phase-lag" effect, compared to the onshore-directed near-bed load transport rate. Compared to the asymmetric flow, the onshore near-bed load transport (and migration) rate is limited by the larger offshore directed flux associated with returning flow on the lee side, due to a stronger lee vortex generation during the onshore flow half-cycle. In the combined asymmetric-skewed case, the near-bed load and migration rate are higher than in the asymmetric flow case. Moreover, the offshore-directed suspended load is much smaller compared to the skewed flow case due to a competition between the negative (due to velocity skewness) and positive (due to acceleration skewness) phase-lag effects. As a result, the net transport rate is onshore directed but slightly smaller than the asymmetric flow case. • Vortex generation-ejection processes lead to different phase-lag effects for asymmetric and skewed flows. • The onshore ripple migration rate is limited (enhanced) by the lee (stoss) vortex induced returning flux for skewed (asymmetric) flows. • Combined asymmetric-skewed flow has the highest onshore migration rate (near-bed load). Examining river engineering properties and bed erosion is one of the most challenging but crucial issues in river engineering and sediment hydraulics, so preventing erosion and sedimentation is one of the primary goals of river management and prediction of river behavior. This research aims to give hydraulic engineers and decision-makers an accurate and dependable sediment transport equation that could be utilized to govern river engineering and modify river morphology. This study evaluated the carried sediments and their estimated quantity upstream of the Ramadi Barrage on the Euphrates River in the Anbar area of western Iraq. Six formulas, including Yang, Shen, Hung, Ackers and White, Engelund and Hansen, and Bagnold's and Toffaleti's, were used to evaluate the applicability of sediment transport in the study area. The performance of these models was assessed based on the precision of the actual sediment load relative to a specified deviation ratio. The analyses indicated that the Engelund-Hansen formula is the most applicable for this section of the river; that concludes, field data indicated an annual total sediment flow of roughly 1, 536, 337 tons.

Sediment transport by wind or water near the threshold of grain motion is dominated by rare transport events. This intermittency makes it difficult to calibrate sediment transport laws, or to define an unambiguous threshold for grain entrainment, both of which are crucial for predicting sediment transport rates. We present a model that captures this intermittency and shows that the noisy statistics of sediment transport contain useful information about the sediment entrainment threshold and the variations in driving fluid stress. Using a combination of laboratory experiments and analytical results, we measure the threshold for grain entrainment in a novel way and introduce a new property, the "shear stress variability", which predicts conditions under which transport will be intermittent. Our work suggests strategies for improving measurements and predictions of sediment flux and hints that the sediment transport law may change close to the threshold of motion. Understanding how rivers adjust to the sediment load they carry is critical to predicting the evolution of landscapes. Presently, however, no physically based model reliably captures the dependence of basic river properties, such as its shape or slope, on the discharge of sediment, even in the simple case of laboratory rivers. Here, we show how the balance between fluid stress and gravity acting on the sediment grains, along with cross-stream diffusion of sediment, determines the shape and sediment flux profile of laminar laboratory rivers that carry sediment as bedload. Using this model, which reliably reproduces the experiments without any tuning, we confirm the hypothesis, originally proposed by Parker [G. Parker, J. Fluid Mech. 89, 127-146 (1978)], that rivers are restricted to exist close to the threshold of sediment motion (within about 20%). This limit is set by the fluid-sediment interaction and is independent of the water and sediment load carried by the river. Thus, as the total sediment discharge increases, the intensity of sediment flux (sediment discharge per unit width) in a river saturates, and the river can transport more sediment only by widening. In this large discharge regime, the cross-stream diffusion of momentum in the flow permits sediment transport. Conversely, in the weak transport regime, the transported sediment concentrates around the river center without significantly altering the river shape. If this theory holds for natural rivers, the aspect ratio of a river could become a proxy for sediment discharge--a quantity notoriously difficult to measure in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation provides habitat and nature‐based solutions to coastal flooding and erosion, drawing significant interest in its restoration, which requires an understanding of sediment transport and retention. Laboratory experiments examined the influence of stem diameter and arrangement on bedload sediment transport by considering arrays of different stem diameter and mixed diameters. Bedload transport rate was observed to depend on turbulent kinetic energy, with no dependence on stem diameter, which was shown to be consistent with the impulse model for sediment entrainment. Existing predictors of bedload transport for bare beds, based on bed shear stress, were recast in terms of turbulence. The new turbulence‐based model predicted sediment transport measured in model canopies across a range of conditions drawn from several previous studies. A prediction of turbulence based on biomass and velocity was also described, providing an important step toward predicting turbulence and bedload transport in canopies of real vegetation morphology. Shells and shell fragments are biogenic structures that are widespread throughout natural sandy shelf seas and whose presence can affect the bed roughness and erodibility of the seabed. An important and direct consequence is the effect on the formation and movement of small bedforms such as sand ripples. We experimentally measured ripple formation and the migration of a mixture of natural sand with increasing volumes of shell material in a racetrack flume. Our experiments reveal the impacts of shells on ripple development in sandy sediment, providing information that was previously lacking. Shells expedite the onset of sediment transport while simultaneously reducing ripple dimensions and slowing down their migration rates. Moreover, increasing shell content enhances near-bed flow velocity due to the reduction of bed friction that is partly caused by a decrease in average ripple size and occurrence. This, in essence, limits the rate and magnitude of bed load transport. Given the large influence of shell content on sediment dynamics as well as the high shell concentrations found naturally in the sediments of shallow seas, a significant control from shells on the morphodynamics of sandy marine habitats is expected. Tsunami sediments provide direct evidence of tsunami arrival histories for tsunami risk assessments. Therefore, it is important to understand the formation process of tsunami sediment for tsunami risk assessment. Numerical simulations can be used to better understand the formation process. However, as the formation of tsunami sediments is affected by various conditions, such as the tsunami hydraulic conditions, topographic conditions, and sediment conditions, many problems remain in such simulations when attempting to accurately reproduce the tsunami sediment formation process. To solve these problems, various numerical models and methods have been proposed, but there have been few comparative studies among such models. In this study, inter-model comparisons of tsunami sediment transport models were performed to improve the reproducibility of tsunami sediment features in models. To verify the reproducibility of the simulations, the simulation results were compared with the results of sediment transport hydraulic experiments using a tsunami run-up to land. Two types of experiments were conducted: a sloping plane with and without coverage by silica sand (fixed and movable beds, respectively). The simulation results confirm that there are conditions and parameters affecting not only the amount of sediment transport, but also the distribution. In particular, the treatment of the sediment coverage ratio in a calculation grid, roughness coefficient, and bedload transport rate formula on the fixed bed within the sediment transport model are considered important. This paper is devoted to study the sediment runoff of the Ile River downstream. The article analyses the Kapshagai reservoir impact on regime and characteristics of sediment runoff in the Ile River downstream before and after construction of the reservoir in 1970. Along with the calculation of characteristics of sediment runoff, an assessment of amount of suspended sediment, which is in the bowl of the reservoir, is shown. Furthermore, the impact reservoir on granulometric composition of suspended and bed sediment of Ile River was calculated.

The Labyrinth in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica is characterized by large bedrock channels emerging from beneath the margin of Wright Upper Glacier. To study the morphodynamics of large subglacial channels cut into bedrock, we develop herein a numerical model based on the classical theory of subglacial channels and recent results on bedrock abrasion by saltating bed load. Model results show that bedrock abrasion in subglacial channels with pressurized flow reaches a maximum at an intermediate distance up-ice from the glacier snout for a wide range of sediment grain sizes and sediment loads. Close to the snout, the velocity is too low and the sediment particles cannot be mobilized. Far from the snout, the flow accelerates and sediment is transported in suspension, thus limiting particle impacts at the channel bottom and reducing abrasion. This non-monotonic relationship between subglacial flow and bedrock abrasion produces concave up bottom profiles in subglacial channels and potential cross-section constrictions after channel confluences. Both landforms are present in the bedrock channels of the Labyrinth. We therefore conclude that these geomorphic features are a possible signature of bedrock abrasion, rather than glacial scour, and reflect the complex interplay between transport rate, sediment load, and transport capacity in subglacial channels. Featured Application: This research describes the application of an instrumented sphere for monitoring the vigorousness of its interactions as it is transported downstream a turbulent river. The presented tool has the potential to offer, in a novel and relatively accessible and direct way, information that links to the bed load transport rates in natural streams and built canals. Sediment transport at near threshold to low transport stages (below the continuous transport) can still be affected by flow turbulence and its dynamics can benefit from further comprehensive studies. This study uses an instrumented particle embedded with micro electromechanical sensors (MEMS) to allow tracking the motions and forces acting on it, leading to and during its transport. Instrumented particle transport experiments were carried out at laboratory flume under a range of flow conditions. The probability distributions functions (PDFs) of bed load particle instantaneous velocities, hop distances and associated travel times (measured from start to stop of transport) were obtained for all the performed experiments with varying flow rates and particle density. The modelled distributions are useful and enable a deeper understanding of bed load sediment transport dynamics from a Lagrangian perspective. Furthermore, the results analyzed from the instrumented particle (including the particle's transport mode) were validated using visual particle tracking methods (top and side cameras). The findings of this study demonstrate that for the range of turbulent flows trialed herein, the instrumented particle can be a useful, accessible, and low-cost tool for obtaining particle transport dynamics, having demonstrated satisfactory potential for field deployment in the near future. This study presents the first geochemical and petrophysical data on the composition of the bedload sediments transported by the Algal and Bohemian Stream, and the latter's prominent tributary: the Dirty Stream. The catchments of these rivers are partially glacierised, with only 2% and 6% ice cover in the Algal and Bohemian stream catchments, respectively. Therefore, the primary sources of liquid water to these rivers are snowmelt and active layer thawing. This study shows that the Cretaceous marine sedimentary rocks deposited in the back-arc James Ross Basin, which underlies the studied rivers, represent the main constituent of fluvial bedload. This is in contrast to suspended sediment loads, whose composition is a mixture of volcanic rocks from the surrounding James Ross Island Volcanic Group. This also suggests that bedload is only transported for a distance of few hundreds of metres, while suspended sediment load is transported throughout the Algal and Bohemian streams to the sea. Our ability to test probabilistic models linking clast movements to bedload diffusion is most limited by basic field data, because measuring transport statistics during natural floods is difficult. We embedded accelerometers and gyroscopes into artificial cobbles, and measured transport during 28 daily snowmelt floods in Halfmoon Creek, Colorado, USA. The tracers captured ≈6 orders of temporal magnitude of rest durations in one data set for the first time. Motions and rests suggest a scaling transition around ≈12.5 min from subdiffusion to superdiffusion with increasing shear stress and timescale. We interpret that diurnal hydrograph cyclicity may cause another diffusion scaling break at ≈12 h. Shear stress controls and scaling uncertainties may explain differences in diffusion exponents found in several field data sets, suggesting that gravel superdiffusion scaling may be relatively universal over minutes to seasons. Methodologically, "smartrocks" can quantify field transport probabilities previously only possible in laboratory experiments. The erosive capacity of slope water flows, a key parameter in the quantitative assessment of soil erosion, is defined as the difference between the transporting capacity of the flow and the total content of its suspended load and bedload. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the factors and intensity of soil aggregates attrition in the water flow that determine the shares of suspended and dragged particles in the sediment load. The earlier simulation of the attrition of river sediments (H. Sternberg) and soil aggregates (G.I. Shvebs) fail to fully reflect the condition of interaction between soils and slope flows. The further attempts to describe the attrition process using empirical dependences have not given any significant improvements. A fundamentally different model of particle attrition based on the laws of mechanics allows us to describe the attrition of soil aggregates broken away by water flow differentiating the total load between the bedload and suspended load.
