The redox state of arc mantle has been considered to be more oxidized and diverse than that of the mid-ocean ridge, but the cause of the variation is debated. We examine the redox state of the Cenozoic global arc mantle by compiling measured/calculated fO2 of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from arc magma and modeled fO2 based on V/Sc and Cu/Zr ratios of arc basaltic rocks. The results indicate that the redox state of Cenozoic arc mantle is latitude dependent, with less oxidized arc mantle in the low latitudes, contrasting with a near constant across-latitude trend in the mid-ocean ridges. We propose that such a latitude-dependent pattern in the arc mantle may be controlled by the variation in the redox state of subducted sediment, possibly related to a latitudinal variation in the primary production of phytoplankton, which results in more organic carbon and sulfide deposited on the low-latitude ocean floor. Our findings provide evidence for the impact of the surface environment on Earth's upper mantle. The size of deep-seated magma chambers is an important parameter for understanding pre-eruptive signals such as surface deformation. The constantly inflating Hekla volcano in Iceland has had relatively simple eruptive behaviour during the historical period. The eruptions start explosively with production of differentially evolved andesite magma to dacite, related to the length of the foregoing quiescence period, and ends with an emission of a basaltic andesite lava of uniform composition. The basaltic andesite is formed by fractional crystallisation from a deeper-seated basalt source in a steady-state manner. How fast such a differentiation mechanism operates is unknown. Measured Ra–Th radioactive disequilibrium in both the basalt and the basaltic andesite reveal a decrease from a 14% excess of 226Ra over 230Th to only 5% with magma differentiation. The decrease in 226Ra excess to 5% in the basaltic andesite of Hekla is shown to be controlled by plagioclase fractionation alone. Therefore, the magma differentiation time from basalt to intermediate magma beneath Mt. Hekla is significantly shorter than three centuries, the time needed to detect significant 226Ra-decay. Given the steady-state production of basaltic andesite magma and the estimated magma production rate, the volume of the basaltic andesite magma reservoir can be estimated as less than 2 km3. The Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) of the Pacific Northwest of the United States is the world's youngest and smallest large igneous province. Its earliest formations are the Imnaha, Steens, and now the Picture Gorge Basalt (PGB), and they were sourced from three different dike swarms exposed from SE Washington to Nevada to northcentral Oregon. PGB is often viewed to be distinct from the other formations, as its magmas are sourced from a shallow, relatively depleted, and later subduction-induced metasomatized mantle, along with its young stratigraphic position. It has long been known that the lowermost American Bar flows (AB1&2) of the Imnaha Basalt are chemically similar to those of the PGB, yet the Imnaha Basalt is generally thought to carry the strongest plume source component. These opposing aspects motivated us to revisit the compositional relationships between AB1&2 and PGB. Our findings suggest that tapping a shallow, variably depleted, and metasomatized mantle reservoir to produce earliest CRBG lavas occurred across the province, now pinpointed to ~17 Ma. Moreover, compositional provinciality exists indicating regional differences in degree of depletion and subduction overprint that is preserved by regionally distributed lavas, which in turn implies relatively local lava emplacement at this stage. Apatite can incorporate significant amounts of H2O and CO2, potentially recording volatile abundance and behavior during magma evolution. Here we conducted in situ measurements of CO2 and H2O concentrations in apatite, along with elemental compositions, from two contemporaneous alkaline volcanic suites (Tianbao and Tudiling) in the South Qinling belt in central China to better understand the CO2 and H2O contents and behavior in evolving alkaline melts. Apatite from alkali basalts in Tianbao contains variable CO2 contents ranging from <100 ppm to 2.7 wt.% and H2O contents ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 wt.%. Apatite from REE-enriched trachytes, which evolved from alkali basalt, shows significantly lower CO2 contents and a continuous decrease in H2O during magma fractionation. The observations suggest that CO2 loss commenced at the early stages of magma evolution, whereas significant H2O loss occurred during subsequent magma fractionation in tandem with REE-enrichment. In comparison, apatite grains from the Tudiling trachyte, which is genetically linked with carbonatite, contain higher CO2 contents (0.6 to 1.5 wt.%) but lower REE concentrations than the Tianbao trachytes. Apatite in the Tudiling trachyte is inferred to have crystallized from a carbonated alkaline magma prior to significant CO2 loss and the separation of Tudiling carbonatitic melts, where subsequent liquid immiscibility led to REE enrichment into the carbonatitic melts. The volatile characteristics of apatite from the two volcanic suites provide valuable insights into two different evolutionary processes of alkaline/carbonatitic magmas, the behavior of CO2 and H2O, and the enrichment of REE in alkaline systems. To ascertain the Early-to-Middle Jurassic tectonic setting in the central Great Xing'an Range, this study investigated the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids exposed in the Chaihe area in the central Great Xing'an Range based on isotopic chronology and petrogeochemistry. The results of this study show that the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids have emplacement ages of 179–172 Ma. Moreover, the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids are high-K calc-alkaline unfractionated I-type granitoids and high-K calc-alkaline fractionated I-type granitoids, respectively. The magma sources of the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids both originated from the partial melting of newly accreted lower crustal basaltic rocks. Meanwhile, the Middle Jurassic magma sources were mixed with mantle-derived materials or ocean-floor sediments formed by the dehydration and metasomatism of subducted slabs. The Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids in the study area were formed in the subduction environment of the oceanic crust, in which the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic plate was subducted southward beneath the Eerguna and Xing'an blocks. Subduction zones display the most diverse magma compositions from various calc‐alkaline differentiates to alkaline mafic associations, but mechanisms generating Nb‐Enriched Basalts (NEB) and High‐Nb Basalts (HNB) in such settings have received less attention from the researchers. Occurrences of NEB and HNB magmas in the Mesozoic Neotethyan active margin in Iran, known as the Sanandaj‐Sirjan Zone, provide an excellent natural lab for examining this interesting petrologic puzzle. The Middle‐Jurassic typical calc‐alkaline arc plutons exhibit a NW‐SE subduction parallel trend. In the northwestern sector of the zone, the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous magmatic rocks (JCMR) define a chain that transects the Middle‐Jurassic arc trend. The two cross‐cutting magmatic chains are chemically and genetically different. The JCMR include three distinct compositional groups: (i) tholeiites that are depleted in high‐field‐strength elements (HFSE) and show subduction‐related geochemical fingerprints, (ii) NEB with higher abundances of Nb and other HFSE, and (iii) HNB with the highest abundances of Nb and other HFSE. The latter two groups do not display typical arc signatures and are transitional between arc and plume‐type magmas. These three groups of rocks show linear major and trace element, and Sr–Nd isotopic variation trends extending from Mid‐Ocean Ridge Basalts‐like tholeiites to Oceanic Island Basalts‐like HNB. Hence, a two‐component mixing process is suggested for explaining the compositional variation of the JCMR. We propose that a vertical window resulted from slab tear created the geodynamic environment for juxtaposition of magmas originated at different mantle depths and formation of the transitional basalts by magma mixing. Previous studies of Pinatubo have shown that basaltic magma was injected into what was thought to be a homogeneous dacitic magma reservoir just before the 1991 eruptions. Mingling of the basalt and dacite resulted in a volatile-charged hybrid andesitic magma that ascended through the overlying dacite reservoir, triggering initial andesitic eruptions and the climactic eruption of dacite a few days later. Using mineral and whole-rock chemistry and isotopic data, we show that the dacitic magma was not homogeneous, but was instead heterogenous, produced from heterogeneous dacitic magma, which is approximated by at least two distinct silicic end-member magmas. Our data show that these silicic magmas were not produced by fractional crystallization of basaltic magma, such as that which formed the basalt enclaves of the 1991 and Buag period basalts (~ 1.0–0.5 ka). Instead, we argue that the 1991 dacite magmas were produced independently but simultaneously by the melting of heterogeneous crustal materials. Based on these results, we propose the following sequence of events. First, basaltic magma distinct from that of the Buag period underplated and heated the crust to form silicic melt pockets of various compositions in a crustal mush zone. During the period between 0.5 ka and 1991, these silicic melts separated from the crustal mush zone and accumulated in the crust, forming the 1991 dacitic magma reservoir. Finally, during the climactic phase of the 1991 eruption, heterogeneous dacitic pumices were erupted, having a composition range that is representative of their variable crustal origins. Dating from the lunar magma ocean solidification period, the Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT) occupies 16% of the surface but has a much higher thorium abundance compared to the rest of the Moon and is thus interpreted to carry 40% of the radioactive elements by volume in the form of an anomalously thick KREEP-rich layer. Subsequent research has focused on the processes responsible for PKT concentration and localization (e.g., degree-1 convection, farside impact basin effects, etc.), and the effect of PKT high-radioactivity localization on lunar thermal evolution (e.g., topography relaxation, mantle heating, late-stage mare basalt generation, etc.). Here we use a stratigraphic approach and new crustal thickness data to probe the nature of the PKT with depth. We find that most PKT characteristics can be explained by sequential impact cratering events that excavated and redistributed to the surface/near-surface a much thinner Th-rich KREEP layer at depth, implying that no anomalous conditions of PKT thickness, radioactive abundances, geodynamics, thermal effects or magma generation are likely to be required as in the previous studies. Fractional crystallization of Fe–Ti oxides can induce detectable Mg isotopic changes during late-stage basalt differentiation. Because chromite and olivine are early crystallizing phases during basaltic melt differentiation, the effect of chromite crystallization on the fractionation of Mg isotopes during early-stage basalt differentiation is still poorly understood. Here, we examine the possibility of chromite induced Mg isotope fractionation with a Mg isotopic study of chromite–olivine pairs in dunites and chromitites collected from major types of basaltic intrusive rock suites formed by fractional crystallization in different tectonic settings. The chromite δ26Mg (= [(26Mg/24Mg)sample / (26Mg/24Mg)DSM3–1] × 1000) values range from −0.19‰ to 0.30‰ in the Luobusa ophiolite, −0.09‰ to 0.78‰ in the Kızıldağ ophiolite, −0.04 to 0.42‰ in the Gaositai Alaskan-type complex, similar to those previously reported from the Stillwater layered intrusion (−0.05 to 0.84‰; Bai et al., 2021). They are significantly higher than those of coexisting olivine (δ26Mg = −0.48 to −0.10‰). The Δ26MgChr-Ol (= δ26MgChr − δ26MgOl) values in the rock suites investigated here fall largely between equilibrium fractionation lines of spinel–olivine pairs and magnesioferrite–olivine pairs, indicating equilibrium Mg isotopic fractionation. Furthermore, the Δ26MgChr-Ol values increase with decreasing Cr content of chromite in the dunites and chromitites, showing that high 26Mg has a greater affinity to Al-rich chromite than Cr-rich chromite. Fractional crystallization of such isotopically high chromite is expected to progressively lower the Mg isotope values of the in the remaining magma. Furthermore, continental basaltic magmas typically experience early crystallization of olivine and Al-rich chromite. Their δ26Mg values correlate positively with MgO (FeO, Cr,) and CaO/Al2O3 ratios and negatively with total alkali contents (Na2O + K2O). This indicates that detectable Mg isotopic fractionation occurred in intra-continental basalt magmas, probably by fractional crystallization of olivine and chromite. The observed low-δ26Mg intra-continental basalts can be accurately modeled by olivine + chromite fractionation with fractionation factors (Δ26MgChr-Melt) of 0.20‰, 0.60‰, and 1.18‰ as observed in the chromitites investigated during this study. Therefore, the early-stage basaltic melt differentiation involving separation of olivine and chromite may induce resolvable Mg isotopic fractionation, and the δ26Mg values of continental basalts should be used with caution in petrogenetic studies. The Late Aptian Rajmahal Traps originated through Kerguelen-Plume-related volcanism at the eastern margin of the Indian Shield. Clinopyroxene and whole-rock thermobarometry reveals that the Rajmahal magmas crystallized at P-T conditions of ≤~5 kbar/~1100–1200 °C. These pressures correspond to upper crustal depths (≤~19 km). Modeling shows that the Rajmahal primary magmas were last in equilibrium with mantle at P-T conditions of ~9 kbar/~1280 °C. The corresponding depths (~33 km) are consistent with gravity data that indicate a high-density layer at lower crustal depths below an upwarped Moho. Thus, the high-density layer probably represents anomalous mantle. It is likely that the mantle-derived magmas accumulated below the upwarped Moho and were subsequently transported via trans-crustal faults/fractures to the upper crust where they evolved by fractional crystallization in small staging chambers before eruption. In the lower part of the Rajmahal plumbing system, buoyant melts from the Kerguelen Plume may have moved laterally and upward along the base of the lithosphere to accumulate and erode the eastern Indian lithospheric root. Columbia River province magmatism is now known to include abundant and widespread rhyolite centers even though the view that the earliest rhyolites erupted from the McDermitt Caldera and other nearby volcanic fields along the Oregon–Nevada state border has persisted. Our study covers little-studied or unknown rhyolite occurrences in eastern Oregon that show a much wider distribution of older centers. With our new data on distribution of rhyolite centers and ages along with literature data, we consider rhyolites spanning from 17.5 to 14.5 Ma of eastern Oregon, northern Nevada, and western Idaho to be a direct response to flood basalts of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) and collectively categorize them as Columbia River Rhyolites. The age distribution patterns of Columbia River Rhyolites have implications for the arrival, location, and dispersion of flood basalt magmas in the crust. We consider the period from 17.5 to 16.4 Ma to be the waxing phase of rhyolite activity and the period from 15.3 to 14.5 Ma to be the waning phase. The largest number of centers was active between 16.3–15.4 Ma. The existence of crustal CRBG magma reservoirs beneath rhyolites seems inevitable, and hence, rhyolites suggest the following. The locations of centers of the waxing phase imply the arrival of CRBG magmas across the distribution area of rhyolites and are thought to correspond to the thermal pulses of arriving Picture Gorge Basalt and Picture-Gorge-Basalt-like magmas of the Imnaha Basalt in the north and to those of Steens Basalt magmas in the south. The earlier main rhyolite activity phase corresponds with Grande Ronde Basalt and evolved Picture Gorge Basalt and Steens Basalt. The later main phase rhyolite activity slightly postdated these basalts but is contemporaneous with icelanditic magmas that evolved from flood basalts. Similarly, centers of the waning phase span the area distribution of earlier phases and are similarly contemporaneous with icelanditic magmas and with other local basalts. These data have a number of implications for long-held notions about flood basalt migration through time and the age-progressive Snake River Plain Yellowstone rhyolite trend. There is no age progression in rhyolite activity from south-to-north, and this places doubt on the postulated south-to-north progression in basalt activity, at least for main-phase CRBG lavas. Furthermore, we suggest that age-progressive rhyolite activity of the Snake River Plain–Yellowstone trend starts at ~12 Ma with activity at the Bruneau Jarbidge center, and early centers along the Oregon–Nevada border, such as McDermitt, belong to the early to main phase rhyolites identified here. Zoned plutons, composed of dunites, pyroxenites, and gabbroic rocks, have been referred to as the Ural-Alaskan type complexes (UA-complexes) and occur in numerous paleo-arc settings worldwide. Many of these complexes are source rocks for economic placers of platinum-group metals. Thus, it is important to understand how UA-complexes form and the origin and behavior of platinum-group elements (PGEs). It is widely assumed that the UA-complexes result from differentiation of supra-subduction high-Ca high-Mg sub-alkaline magmas. However, there is a lack of direct evidence for the existence and differentiation of such magmas, mainly because cases of UA-complexes being spatially and temporally linked to co-genetic volcanics are unknown. We studied an UA-complex from the Tumrok range (Eastern Kamchatka) where a dunite-clinopyroxenite-gabbro assemblage is spatially and temporary related to high-Ca volcanics (i.e., picrites and basalts). Based on the mineral and chemical composition of the rocks, mineral chemistry, and composition of melt inclusions hosted within rock-forming minerals, we conclude that the intrusive assemblage and the volcanics are co-genetic and share the same parental magma of ankaramitic composition. Furthermore, the compositions of the plutonic rocks are typical of UA-complexes worldwide. Finally, the rocks studied exhibit a full differentiation sequence from olivine-only liquidus in picrites and dunites to eutectic crystallization of diopside or hornblende, plagioclase, and K-Na feldspar in plagio-wehrlites and gabbroic rocks. Sample return missions have provided the basis for understanding the thermochemical evolution of the Moon. Mare basalt sources are likely to have originated from partial melting of lunar magma ocean cumulates after solidification from an initially molten state. Some of the Apollo mare basalts show evidence for the presence in their source of a late-stage radiogenic heat-producing incompatible element-rich layer, known for its enrichment in potassium, rare-earth elements, and phosphorus (KREEP). Here we show the most depleted lunar meteorite, Asuka-881757, and associated mare basalts, represent ancient (~3.9 Ga) partial melts of KREEP-free Fe-rich mantle. Petrological modeling demonstrates that these basalts were generated at lower temperatures and shallower depths than typical Apollo mare basalts. Calculated mantle potential temperatures of these rocks suggest a relatively cooler mantle source and lower surface heat flow than those associated with later-erupted mare basalts, suggesting a fundamental shift in melting regime in the Moon from ~3.9 to ~3.3 Ga. Ancient (~3.9 Ga) KREEP-free basalts were sourced from a relatively cool and shallow pyroxene-rich mantle distinct from later-erupted (<3.8 Ga) KREEP-bearing basalts, indicating a fundamental change in melting regimes in the Moon. Volcanic rocks of the Java sector of Sunda arc have a wide range of isotopic compositions that indicate significant addition of subjected sediment. What processes control these geochemical characteristics is a topic of long-standing debate. Here we report Sr–Nd–Pb radiogenic isotope ratios and geochemical data from stratigraphically well-constrained rocks of Sundoro volcano in central Java that represent the volcano's activity since 34 ka. The rocks range from basalt (51 wt % SiO2) to andesite (63 wt % SiO2) and are dominated by basaltic andesite. We divide them into magma types A, B and C, having low, medium and high 87Sr/86Sr and Pb isotopic ratios, respectively. According to various differentiation indices, the three magma types have separate, parallel 87Sr/86Sr, Ba/Zr and La/Yb trends and disparate Pb isotopic trends. The dominant process of intracrustal differentiation appears to be magma mixing, in which each of the three magma types represents the mixing of a distinct mafic end-member and a distinct felsic end-member. The distinct geochemical profiles of these magma types indicate that the three mafic end-members are genetically unrelated and that their differences may represent characteristics of their magma sources. On the basis of trace element ratios (Ba/Yb and La/Yb) and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions, we estimate that magma types A, B and C represent mantle wedge materials fluxed by ~1%, ~1.5% and ~2% slab-derived materials containing 50%, 55% and 65% sediment component, respectively, reflecting increasing proportions of sediments and increasing slab flux. Geochemical data from Merapi volcano, interpreted using the same approach, reveal a similar increase in the slab-derived flux to the magma source, raising the possibility that such short-lived variations in magma genesis, perhaps related to the subduction of bathymetric relief features, characterize the unusual magmatism beneath the volcanic front of the central Java sector of the Sunda arc. The unusually prolonged volcanism at the Chang'e‐5 (CE‐5) landing site remains a mystery. To constrain the geochemical features of the CE‐5 mantle source, we performed in situ sulfur isotope analysis on sulfides of the CE‐5 basalts. The modal abundance of sulfides is ∼0.1 wt%, dominated by troilite with trace cubanite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, yielding a S‐abundance of ∼360 ± 180 ppm for the bulk CE‐5 basalts. Our analysis shows a decreasing trend of δ34S in the magma with crystallization and degassing, suggesting ∼40% degassing loss of S, and accordingly the maximum S‐abundance in CE‐5 primitive magma was calibrated to approximately 600 ± 300 ppm. Considering an extensive fractional crystallization following a low‐degree partial melting of the CE‐5 basalts, the estimated sulfur abundance in the mantle source is ∼1–10 ppm. This result suggests a strong depletion of volatiles in the CE‐5 mantle source, which may be caused by prolonged magmatic activity. Sulfur, with four stable isotopes (32S, 33S, 34S, and 36S) and an active component in magmatic activity, can constrain the magmatic processes and geochemical features of the mantle source. Here, we report the S isotope compositions of troilite in the CE‐5 samples. The sulfides are mainly troilite, with trace Cu‐ and Ni‐sulfides. We counted the modal abundance of sulfides and then obtained the S abundance of the bulk CE‐5 basalts. Analysis indicates that S isotope fractionation exists in the CE‐5 troilite and is mainly due to magma degassing. According to the variation in S isotope compositions, we corrected for the degassing loss of S and obtain the S abundance of the CE‐5 magma before eruption. Furthermore, we estimated the S abundance of the CE‐5 basalt source based on the formation of the CE‐5 magma. This estimated value is significantly lower than the estimations for Apollo basalt sources, implying multiple extractions of sulfur‐bearing melts from the CE‐5 mantle source due to its prolonged magmatic activity. Mineral/melt partition coefficients have been widely used to provide insights into magmatic processes. Olivine is one of the most abundant and important minerals in the lunar mantle and mare basalts. Yet, no systematic olivine/melt partitioning data are available for lunar conditions. We report trace element partition data between host mineral olivine and its melt inclusions in lunar basalts. Equilibrium is evaluated using the Fe-Mg exchange coefficient, leading to the choice of melt inclusion-host olivine pairs in lunar basalts 12040, 12009, 15016, 15647, and 74235. Partition coefficients of 21 elements (Li, Mg, Al, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Y, Zr, Nb, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) were measured. Except for Li, V, and Cr, these elements show no significant difference in olivine-melt partitioning compared to the data for terrestrial samples. The partition coefficient of Li between olivine and melt in some lunar basalts with low Mg# (Mg# < 0.75 in olivine, or < ~0.5 in melt) is higher than published data for terrestrial samples, which is attributed to the dependence of DLi on Mg# and the lack of literature DLi data with low Mg#. The partition coefficient of V in lunar basalts is measured to be 0.17 to 0.74, significantly higher than that in terrestrial basalts (0.003 to 0.21), which can be explained by the lower oxygen fugacity in lunar basalts. The significantly higher DV can explain why V is less enriched in evolved lunar basalts than terrestrial basalts. The partition coefficient of Cr between olivine and basalt melt in the Moon is 0.11 to 0.62, which is lower than those in terrestrial settings by a factor of ~2. This is surprising because previous authors showed that Cr partition coefficient is independent of fO2. A quasi-thermodynamically based model is developed to correlate Cr partition coefficient to olivine and melt composition and fO2. The lower Cr partition coefficient between olivine and basalt in the Moon can lead to more Cr enrichment in the lunar magma ocean, as well as more Cr enrichment in mantle-derived basalts in the Moon. Hence, even though Cr is typically a compatible element in terrestrial basalts, it is moderately incompatible in primitive lunar basalts, with a similar degree of incompatibility as V based on partition coefficients in this work, as also evidenced by the relatively constant V/Cr ratio of 0.039 ± 0.011 in lunar basalts. The confirmation of constant V/Cr ratio is important for constraining concentrations of Cr (slightly volatile and siderophile) and V (slightly siderophile) in the bulk silicate Moon. The microgranular enclaves (MEs) and their host granitoids contain vital information on the genesis and evolution of the magma, especially for those which have close relationship with mineralization, yet remains a hot debate on their origin. Here, we investigate the MEs and their host granitoids in the Shuangjianzishan (SJZ) deposits, southern Great Hinggan Range, NE China, using ziron U–Pb dating and Hf isotopes, along with a systematic analysis of whole‐rock geochemical and Sr‐Nd isotopic compositions. The SJZ MEs mainly consist of monzonites and quartz monzonites, and the SJZ granitoids comprise a suite of fine‐grained syenogranites and coarse‐grained monzogranites. The zircon U–Pb dating results suggest that the SJZ granitoids and the SJZ MEs were emplaced at approximately 143–141 Ma. Geochemical features and isotopic compositions of the SJZ granitoids indicate that they are mainly generated by partial melting of juvenile lower‐crustal basaltic rocks. The fine‐grained syenogranites and the coarse‐grained monzogranites have a gradual contact relationship, similar crystallization age, Sr‐, Nd‐, and Hf‐isotopic compositions, suggesting that they were derived from a similar silicic magma reservoir. According to the geochemical compositions and petrographic characteristics (aggregates of coarse‐grained euhedral plagioclase crystals) of the SJZ granitoids, we infer that the monzogranites (SiO2 = 69.24–74.95 wt%) are regarded as the residual cumulate and the fine‐grained syenogranites (SiO2 = 74.83–77.97 wt%) are high silica melts segregated from a crystal mush. The SJZ MEs are characterised by low SiO2 (50.03–64.20 wt%) and MgO (1.08–2.63 wt%) contents, high P2O5 contents and contain acicular apatite, which are consistent with the products of intermediate magma. Combining with the MEs have comparable crystallization age, mineral assemblage, whole‐rock Sr‐Nd and zircon Hf‐isotopic compositions with their host granitoids, implying the MEs were autoliths related to their host monzogranites. Collectively, we infer that the SJZ MEs were generated by the rapid cooling and crystallization of the hot ascending intermediate magmas contacted with the cooler wall rocks, then those sub‐solid fine‐grained crystal‐rich margins were fragmented and injected into the progressive evolved mush chamber, leading to the extraction and upward percolation of high silicic melts from the compacting crystal‐rich mush in the shallow crust. The basalts of the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption were the first erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in 781 years and offer a unique opportunity to determine the composition of the mantle underlying Iceland, in particular its oxygen isotope composition (δ18O values). The basalts show compositional variations in Zr/Y, Nb/Zr and Nb/Y values that span roughly half of the previously described range for Icelandic basaltic magmas and signal involvement of Icelandic plume (OIB) and Enriched Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalt (EMORB) in magma genesis. Here we show that Fagradalsfjall δ18O values are invariable (mean δ18O = 5.4 ± 0.3‰ 2 SD, N = 47) and indistinguishable from "normal" upper mantle, in contrast to significantly lower δ18O values reported for erupted materials elsewhere in Iceland (e.g., the 2014–2015 eruption at Holuhraun, Central Iceland). Thus, despite differing trace element characteristics, the melts that supplied the Fagradalsfjall eruption show no evidence for 18O-depleted mantle or interaction with low-δ18O crust and may therefore represent a useful mantle reference value in this part of the Icelandic plume system. Bromo is among the very active volcanoes in Indonesia and is known for its recurrent and long-lasting eruptive manifestations. Past volcanic gas studies have revealed Bromo as one of the principal sources of volcanic degassing in Indonesia. This high degassing from Bromo volcano is further characterized in this work, based on more than 10 years of intermittent ground-based gas measurements, combined with daily SO2 mass, captured by the OMI sensor. Over the past decade, Bromo has released 0.7 Tg of SO2 into the atmosphere, representing 3% of the volcanic degassing budget of Indonesia and 0.3% of the global volcanic SO2 emission budget outside eruptive periods. Results also reveal that 18.8 Tg of H2O, 2.0 Tg of CO2, 0.1 Tg of H2S, and 0.005 Tg of H2 were released from the Bromo volcano in one decade. About 81% of these gases are released passively between eruptive events. The chemistry of the eruptive products, sampled between 2001 and 2019, indicate that Bromo volcanic activity is sustained by a basaltic-andesite to basalt trachy-andesite magma source with a transition from medium-K to high-K composition. Such an evolution associated to a C-rich gas likely resulted from a low partial melting and sediment contribution to the genesis of the source magma. New magma injections into the reservoir and fractional crystallization have further amplified the changes of magma composition. Finally, we speculate that the shallow reservoir replenishment, in response to the continuous strong degassing is the driving mechanism behind the Bromo frequent eruptive events. The specific duration between the impact event and subsequent volcanic flows is highly variable based on previous works. The method of crater size-frequency distribution (CSFD) has been previously used to date the basalt in Orientale Basin, which yielded inconsistent resultant Absolute Model Age (AMA) ranges. The inconsistency may be attributed to the choice of counting area and identified superposed craters. In this study, we integrated the Chang'E-2 (CE-2) imaging data (7 m/pix) and the IIM and 20 m CE-2 DTMS data, re-divided Mare Orientale, and re-estimated the age of the basalts there. The ages revealed that (1) the central basalts had multiphase eruptions, beginning at 3.77 Ga (30 My after the impact event) with the longest duration of 1.51 Gy; (2) the edge basalts have a similar features as the central basalts, beginning at 3.75–3.50 Ga (50–300 My after the impact) with the longest duration of 0.67 Gy. Compared with the basalts along the basinal margin, the central basalts have higher Ti but lower Mg# contents, consistent with the basaltic magma fractionation trend. Spatial distribution characteristics indicate that the basalt eruption occurred in the impact direction upstream and in the center, but almost absent in the impact direction downstream. Accordingly, we speculate that the longevity of the lunar mare basaltic volcanism was affected by gravity changes, material balance, and other post-impact processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies investigating magmatic volatile contents indicate widespread enrichment of carbon, sulfur, and halogens in ocean island basalts (OIBs). At El Hierro in the Western Canary Islands, magmas with exceptionally high CO2 and S contents have been erupting throughout the Holocene. High S content of up to 5200 ppm requires an oxidised mantle source, but estimates of initial magmatic oxygen fugacity (f O2) are sparse. Here, we present estimates of f O2 and magmatic temperature for El Hierro together with a global mantle potential temperature dataset to evaluate redox and temperature conditions in the early stages of melt evolution for volatile-rich OIBs. Oxygen fugacities calculated using vanadium partitioning between melt inclusions (MIs) and their olivine hosts are >FMQ + 2.9 (2.9 log10 units above the fayalite-magnetite-quartz buffer), indicating that El Hierro magmas are highly oxidised. MI and matrix glass sulfur speciation data record f O2 between FMQ-1 to FMQ + 2; these values strongly depend on the position of the S2− to S6+ transition relative to the FMQ buffer. Nonetheless, glass sulfur speciation data record lower oxygen fugacity than V partitioning data, indicating MIs were able to maintain Fe3+/ΣFe and S6+/ΣS equilibrium with the surrounding melt during their evolution. The high f O2 of El Hierro magmas is coupled with an average mantle potential temperature estimate of 1443 ± 66°C (1σ, n  = 17) for the broader Canary Islands, which is slightly higher than the average potential temperature estimated for adjacent mid-ocean ridge segments (1427 ± 33°C, 1σ, n  = 474), albeit the two values are well within error. We find that ~98% of Canary Island rock compositions are not suitable for calculation of mantle potential temperatures using currently available methods. This is caused by the presence of substantial pyroxenite and volatile-enriched peridotite mantle domains under the Canary Islands. A wider compositional calibration of various petrological models is necessary to precisely determine mantle potential temperatures for volatile-rich alkali basalts. The Mesozoic‐age Andaman Island Ophiolite located in the southeastern fringe of the Indian plate margin is one of the well‐preserved supra‐subduction‐zone oceanic lithospheric slices. It is tectonically associated with the Indonesian arc system and is an extension of the Phanerozoic Indonesian‐Myanmar orogenic belt. Thus, it offers a unique opportunity to study oceanic crust formation and specify magma evolution processes in the Tethyan subduction system. The volcanics of the Andaman Islands ophiolite display a wide compositional variation. Rock types vary from basic (basalts) to intermediate (basaltic‐trachyandesites, basaltic andesites) to acidic differentiates like dacites and rhyolites. This contribution presents the petrochemistry of the intermediate rock types—basaltic‐trachyandesites, trachyandesites and acidic—dacites and rhyodacites of Andaman Island Ophiolite (India). This study examines the role of fractional crystallization and partial melting in the generation of intermediate and acidic magmas of the Andaman Ophiolite suite. Plagioclases and pyroxenes are the major mineral constituents of these rocks on petrographic observation. Plagioclases of the intermediate rocks are of albite composition Ab98‐99. The acidic rocks show compositional variation from albite to oligoclase (Ab83–99). Analysed pyroxenes of intermediate and acidic rocks are augite (Wo46–49En34–41Fs13–17). The studied calc‐alkaline rocks show variable abundance of Large‐Ion Lithophile Elements and display strong positive Pb and negative Ti anomalies. The chondrite‐normalized Rare Earth Elements display an enriched pattern with varying degrees of enrichment. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry reveals that the intermediate magma and acidic magma becomes saturated with clinopyroxene at 1,062–1,133°C and 1,016–1,079°C, respectively, at 2 kbar and H2O = 2 wt%. Petrochemical findings and model calculations using PELE are consistent with a derivation of intermediate rocks from the basaltic melt by fractional crystallization. In contrast, acidic rocks are the product of partial melting of hydrothermally altered oceanic crust. The highly siderophile element (HSE) or platinum group element (PGE) and Os isotope systematics of basaltic volcanics have recently received a significant attention because of their potential to constrain the petrological processes on magma generation and evolution. The HSE and Os isotope data, which are generally observed at very low concentrations in basalts and obtained by modern enrichment and analytical techniques, are frequently used in petrological studies. The HSE contents and ratios from whole-rock analysis of basalts, and combined evaluation with the theoretical knowledge and modelling of HSE behaviour during the partial melting of mantle and the differentiation of basaltic magma would provide opportunity for geochemical modelling on mantle melting. Besides, HSE contents and Pd-PGE/Ir-PGE ratios are important indicators for the nature of mantle sulfides, the sulfur saturation conditions of the mantle source, sulfide segregation, fractional crystallization, crustal assimilation and partial melting degrees in the origin and evolution of mantle-derived magmas. Therefore, in addition to the traditional whole-rock geochemical data obtained from Cenozoic aged basalts observed widely in Turkey, HSE and Os isotope systematics of these basalts can contribute to define the geochemical features of the mantle source, and to model petrological processes which are effective in the magma evolution. Glasses quenched from relatively undegassed ocean island magmas erupted from volcanoes at Iceland, Hawaii, the Canary Islands, and Erebus have elevated Fe3+/∑Fe ratios compared to glasses quenched from mid-ocean ridge basalts. This has been ascribed to elevated fO2 of their mantle sources, plausibly due to subducted, oxidized near-surface-derived components in their mantle sources. The basaltic magmas from Reunion Island in the Indian ocean have Sr–Nd-Hf-Pb-Os isotopic compositions suggesting that their mantle sources contain little or no subducted near-surface materials and contain the C/FOZO/PREMA mantle component. To constrain the fO2 of the C/FOZO/PREMA mantle component and test the link between oxidized OIB and recycled surface-derived materials in their sources, we measured major and volatile element abundances and Fe3+/∑Fe ratios of naturally glassy, olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Piton de La Fournaise volcano, La Reunion. We conclude that the fO2 of the mantle source of these Reunion lavas is lower than of the mantle sources of primitive, undegassed magmas from Hawaii, Iceland, the Canary Islands, and Mt. Erebus, and indistinguishable from that of the Indian-ocean upper mantle. This finding is consistent with previous suggestions that the source of Reunion lavas (and the C/FOZO/PREMA mantle component) contains little or no recycled materials and with the suggestion that recycled oxidized materials contribute to the high fO2 of some other OIBs, especially those from incompatible-element-enriched mantle sources. Simple mixing models between oxidized melts of EM1 and HIMU components and relatively reduced melts of DMM can explain the isotopic compositions and Fe3+/∑Fe ratios of lavas from Hawaii, Iceland, the Canary Islands, and Mount Erebus; this model can be tested by study of additional OIB magmas, including those rich in the EM2 component. A detailed petrological study is presented to constrain the origin of a suite of alkali olivine basalt and hawaiite (>5 wt% MgO) lavas that were erupted in a rift zone within the western Mexican arc (Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt), adjacent to the Sangangüey andesitic stratovolcano, together with more evolved lavas (mugearites and benmoreites; <5 wt% MgO). As previously documented in the literature, the Sangangüey mafic lavas are devoid of any arc geochemical signature, despite their location within an arc. In this study, a new olivine-melt thermometer/hygrometer, based on the partitioning behavior of Ni2+ and Mg2+, was applied to the Sangangüey basalts (SB). The results show that the high-MgO (>9 wt%) SB crystallized at higher temperatures and lower melt-water contents (0-1.3 wt%) compared to high-MgO arc basalts (=5.7 wt% H2O) erupted in the west-central Mexican arc. The Sangangüey lavas with 5-8 wt% MgO display evidence of mixing between high-MgO alkali olivine basalts and low-MgO mugearites. It is proposed that the unique composition of the mugearites (i.e., low SiO2 contents and elevated FeO and TiO2 contents) is the result of partial melting of mafic lower crust driven by the influx of high-MgO intraplate basalts under relatively hot, dry, and reduced conditions. On the basis of crystal textures and compositional zoning patterns, it is shown that both phenocryst growth and magma mixing occurred rapidly, most likely during ascent along fractures, and not slowly during prolonged storage in a crustal magma chamber. The southern part of the eastern branch of the East African Rift is characterized by extensive volcanic activity since the late Miocene. In the Crater Highlands, part of the North Tanzanian Divergence zone, effusive and pyroclastic rocks reflect nephelinitic and basaltic compositions that formed between 4·6 and 0·8 Ma. The former are best represented by the Sadiman volcano (4·6–4·0 Ma) and the latter occur in the giant Ngorongoro crater (2·3–2·0 Ma), the Lemagarut volcano (2·4–2·2 Ma) and as a small volcanic field in the Laetoli area (2·3 Ma), where basaltic rocks known as Ogol lavas were erupted through fissures and several cinder cones. Compositionally, they are alkaline basalts with 46·0–47·9 wt% SiO2, 3·0–4·3 wt% of Na2O + K2O, Mg# of 61 to 55, and high Cr and Ni content (450–975 and 165–222 ppm respectively). Detailed textural and compositional analysis of the major minerals (olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and spinel-group minerals) reveals the heterogeneity of the rocks. The primary mineral assemblage that crystallized from the Ogol magmas comprises macro- and microcrysts of olivine (Fo89·5–84·2), Cr-bearing diopside to augite, magnesiochromite–chromitess, magnetite–ulvöspinelss, andesine–oligoclasess and fluorapatite, with glass of phonolitic composition in the groundmass. All samples contain appreciable proportions of xenocrystic minerals of macro- and microcryst size, with large variations in both concentration and mineral populations between samples. Xenocrysts include olivine with reverse zonation (Fo84·1–72·5), rounded and embayed clinopyroxene cores of variable composition, anhedral Cr-free magnetite–ulvöspinelss and embayed oligoclase. These xenocrysts as well as variations in major and trace element contents, 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0·70377–0·70470) and 143Nd/144Nd(i) (0·51246–0·51261) ratios provide evidence of multi-stage magma mixing and mingling between Ogol and adjacent Lemagarut volcano basaltic melts with only very minor contamination by Precambrian granite–gneisses. Elevated alkalinity of Ogol lavas, which positively correlates with isotope ratios, and the presence of xenocrystic green core clinopyroxene, perovskite, schorlomite and titanite indicate additional mixing and mingling with evolved nephelinitic magmas and/or assimilation of nephelinitic Laetolil tuffs or foidolitic rocks related to the Sadiman volcano. Owing to their heterogeneity, estimates on the crystallization conditions for the Ogol rocks are difficult. Nevertheless, clinopyroxene–liquid thermobarometry indicates crystallization temperatures of around 1150–1220 °C and records upper-crustal depths of 3–12 km (1–4 kbar). Despite the fact that Ogol basalts are hybrid rocks that formed under open-system conditions with well-documented mixing and mingling processes, they seem to be the best examples closest to primary basaltic melts within the Crater Highlands. Under the right circumstances, fluid-fluxed crustal melting occurs, as demonstrated by some amphibolite-facies migmatites, but the relatively low temperatures involved make this mode of formation an unsatisfactory model for most silicic magma genesis in arcs. The concept of silicic arc magma formation through either partial melting of metabasalts or fractionation of hydrous basaltic parent magmas should also be treated with scepticism, as both these processes produce sodic and moderately to strongly peraluminous liquids that are chemically unlike most arc silicic rocks and glasses. Furthermore, if the silicic magmas are formed in the deep crust, the fractionation model predicts evolved liquids with extreme H2O contents. Thus, the answer to the question posed in the title is that neither of these two models, in isolation, seems likely for the formation of the majority of the more silicic magmas in arc environments. Given the totality of the evidence, we favour models in which high-T processes dominate. These could include fluid-absent partial melting of older non-basaltic arc crust, entrainment of source-derived crystal cargos, hybridisation with mantle-derived magmas and, in some cases, crystal fractionation of andesitic magmas at shallow crustal levels. Deju basalts is a characteristic volcanic association and was first founded in the 1 : 50 000 regional geological survey. There is no previous study. The basalts' characteristics and genesis are systematically studied from the geochemistry. It is showed that the basalts's w(SiO2) = 50.61‒54.54%, w(K2O + Na2O) = 0.15‒5.96%, w(P2O5) = 0.18‒0.45%, w(TiO2) = 1.82‒3.58%, belong to sub alkaline basalt series. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns indicate the basalts are relatively rich in LREE but deficient in HREE (LREE/HREE = 5.81‒6.51), and have a similar mantle source with WPB and OIB. The mantle source have a characteristics of GP. The discrimination diagrams of basalt tectonic setting reflect the basalts in Deju belongs to continental intraplate basalt, formed in a continental rift stretching environment, and during the diagenesis process, the magma source was contaminated by the crust and oceanic crust subducted materials. Mapping and chronology are central to understanding spatiotemporal volcanic trends in diverse tectonic settings. The Cascades back arc in northern California (USA) hosts abundant lava flows and normal faults, but tholeiitic basalts older than 200 ka are difficult to discriminate by classic mapping methods. Paleomagnetism and chemistry offer independent means of correlating basalts, including the Tennant, Dry Lake, and Hammond Crossing basalt fields. Paleomagnetic analysis of these chemically similar basalts yield notable overlap, with statistical analysis yielding 7 chances in 1,000,000 that their similar mean remanent directions are random. These basalts also have overlapping 40Ar/39Ar ages of 272.5 ± 30.6 ka (Tennant), 305.8 ± 23.9 ka (Dry Lake), and 300.4 ± 15.2 and 322.6 ± 17.4 ka (Hammond Crossing). Chemical and paleomagnetic analyses indicate that these spatially distributed basalts represent simultaneous (<100 yr uncertainty) eruptions, and thus we use 305.5 ± 9.8 ka (weighted mean) as the eruption age. Their vents align on a N25°W trend over a distance of 39 km. Tennant erupted the largest volume (3.55 ± 0.75 km³) at the highest elevation; both factors decay to the south-southeast at Dry Lake (0.75 ± 0.15 km³) and Hammond Crossing (0.15 ± 0.05 km³). We propose vertical magma ascent beneath the Tennant vent area, where the most evolved, high-SiO2 magma erupted, with lateral dike propagation in the brittle crust. Many volcanoes erupt compositionally homogeneous magmas over timescales ranging from decades to millennia. This monotonous activity is thought to reflect a high degree of chemical homogeneity in their magmatic systems, leading to predictable eruptive behaviour. We combine petrological analyses of erupted crystals with new thermodynamic models to characterise the diversity of melts in magmatic systems beneath monotonous shield volcanoes in the Galápagos Archipelago (Wolf and Fernandina). In contrast with the uniform basaltic magmas erupted at the surface over long timescales, we find that the sub-volcanic systems contain extreme heterogeneity, with melts extending to rhyolitic compositions. Evolved melts are in low abundance and large volumes of basalt flushing through the crust from depth overprint their chemical signatures. This process will only maintain monotonous activity while the volume of melt entering the crust is high, raising the possibility of transitions to more silicic activity given a decrease in the crustal melt flux. In this study the authors show that monotonous basaltic volcanoes can host a range of melts in their sub-volcanic systems, extending to rhyolitic compositions. The island of Pantelleria, located in the Sicily Channel Rift Zone (Italy), has been the site of violent peralkaline silicic magmatism alternating with minor effusive to low-intensity Strombolian eruptions of basaltic composition. The basaltic rock suites exposed on the island were sampled to investigate the plumbing system dynamics through the study of chemical stratigraphy and temporal records of olivine crystals. Our petrographic and geochemical observations, together with the compositional variability of olivine, suggest different evolutionary histories for basaltic magmas erupted over two major periods divided by the ∼45 ka Green Tuff (GT) eruption. Core-to-rim compositional traverses across olivine crystals document different types of zoning. We recognized olivine zones affected by Fo oscillations at very fine scales in the inner cores, rims and/or in intermediate portions of crystals and used them to reconstruct the residence and passage of crystals through different magmatic environments, with P–T –ƒO2 and compositional characteristics constrained by thermodynamic modeling. The sequence of magmatic environments evidenced by olivine zoning indicate that the pre-GT volcanic period was dominated by injection at shallow crustal levels (∼300–200 MPa) of primitive melts, initially moving from a deep storage zone at the crust-mantle boundary. Supply of this magma significantly decreased after the GT eruption, while the dynamics of magma transfer within the upper portion of the plumbing system were greatly enhanced. The diffusive relaxation of olivine zoning provided the timing of storage and migration of a crystal through different environments. For magmas feeding the ancient (>45 ka) basaltic activity we retrieved transfer histories that are much longer (up to ∼3 years) if compared with those calculated for the post-GT basalts (1–9 months). The compositional and temporal dataset presented in this study supports the idea that the GT eruption and the subsequent collapse of the volcanic edifice could have caused major changes to the internal structural setting of Pantelleria, creating more favorable conditions for the migration of magmas in the upper portions of the plumbing system. A geochemical study was undertaken on basaltic lava flows intercalated with Oligocene to Miocene strata in the Sabzevar region, northern Iran, to examine their petrogenesis in a regional tectonic framework. The lavas are either aphyric or have phenocrysts and micro-phenocrysts of olivine and, to a lesser extent, clinopyroxene. Geochemically, the lavas are silica-undersaturated alkali basalts characterized by relatively high Mg# (~ 57–66) and Na2O/K2O (~ 2.0–6.7). They have distinctive trace element patterns characterized by strong rare-earth element fractionation, negative Nb–Ta and Zr-Hf anomalies and a positive Sr anomaly. Significant contamination by crustal materials either in the magma source or during ascent is ruled out on the basis of trace element compositions and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7037–0.7048 and 143Nd/144Nd = 0.5128–0.5130), both of which differ markedly from continental crustal rocks. Phenocryst assemblage, analysis of multiple saturation points in lherzolite systems, and covariations of La/Yb with MgO of the studied lavas are generally consistent with an origin involving high-pressure fractionation of peridotite-derived melts. Primary magma compositions calculated by reversed fractionation of clinopyroxene and olivine for the relatively primitive samples (> 9 wt.% MgO), however, do not plot on the lherzolite multiple saturation points. Also, high-pressure fractionation predicts increasing trends of silica undersaturation and alkalinitiy with differentiation, and such trends are not indicated by the geochemical data. We suggest that the mixed trends shown by the data might be related to melt generation from both peridotite and silica-deficient pyroxenite sources, superimposed by variable degrees of high-pressure fractionation. The role of pyroxenite in magma genesis is indicated not only by the positive Sr anomaly shown by the trace element patterns, but also first-row transition element systematics of the studied lavas. The silica-deficient pyroxenites contributing to melt generation might have been transformed from mafic–ultramafic cumulates in subducted, lower oceanic crust, or might have formed in the lower crust or mantle lithosphere under continents during earlier magmatic episodes. Small-volume proximal-summit eruptions, sometimes with only little precursors, are common at Piton de la Fournaise (La Reunion Island, France). Their eruptive style ranges from Hawaiian to Strombolian, but their eruptive mechanisms are still not completely understood. To gain insight, we combined syn-eruptive field work, textural and geochemical measurements on the short-lived eruption of July 2015 and we compared it with the 2014 eruption, which opened the ongoing eruptive cycle at Piton de la Fournaise. Crystal-poor and moderately vesicular components were predominant at the beginning of the eruptions, during the lava flux peak and the Hawaiian-style activity. Their abundance decreased with time in favour of less vesiculated and crystal-rich components during the decrease of the lava flux and the Strombolian-style activity. Physical, textural and chemical characterization of the pyroclasts, as well as thermometry calculations, permit relating the different texture and chemical features of the eruptive products with the pre- and syn-eruptive processes. Geophysical precursors detected several weeks before the July 2015 eruption, as well as some evidences of magmatic reheating recorded in bulk and crystal compositions highlight that the July 2015 magma results from a pre-eruptive mixing between more and less differentiated magmas. We report the occurrence of a previously unidentified mineral in lunar samples: a Cl-,F-,REE-rich silico-phosphate identified as Cl-bearing fluorcalciobritholite. This mineral is found in late-stage crystallization assemblages of slowly cooled high-Ti basalts 10044, 10047, 75035, and 75055. It occurs as rims on fluorapatite or as a solid-solution between fluorapatite and Cl-fluorcalciobritholite. The Cl-fluorcalciobritholite appears to be nominally anhydrous. The Cl and Fe2+ of the lunar Cl-fluorcalciobritholite distinguishes it from its terrestrial analog. The textures and chemistry of the Cl-fluorcalciobritholite argue for growth during the last stages of igneous crystallization, rather than by later alteration/replacement by Cl-, REE-bearing metasomatic agents in the lunar crust. The igneous growth of this Cl- and F-bearing and OH-poor mineral after apatite in the samples we have studied suggests that the Lunar Apatite Paradox model (Boyce et al. 2014) may be inapplicable for high-Ti lunar magmas. Water plays an important role in the generation and evolution of volcanic systems. However, the direct measurement of the pre-eruption water content of subaerial volcanic rocks is difficult, because of the degassing during magma ascent. In this study, we developed a method to calculate the pre-eruption water content of the basalts from the Cenozoic Wudalianchi–Erkeshan–Keluo (WEK) potassic volcanic field, Northeastern China, and investigated their mantle source. A water-insensitive clinopyroxene– melt thermobarometer and a water-sensitive silica activity thermobarometer were applied to these basalts. Two pressure-temperature (P-T) paths of the ascending magma were calculated using these two independent thermobarometers, with a similar P-T slope but clear offset. By adjusting the water content used in the calculation, the difference between the two P-T paths was minimized, and the water content of the WEK melts was estimated to be 4.5 ± 1.2 wt% at a pressure range of 10.1–13.5 kbar, corresponding to depths of 37–47 km. Degassing modeling shows that during the magma ascent from below the Moho to near the surface, CO2 was predominantly degassed, while the melt H2O content kept stable. Significant H2O degassing occurred until the magma ascended to 5–2 kbar. The silica activity P–T estimates of the most primary WEK samples suggest that the magmas were generated by the melting of convective mantle, which was probably facilitated by a wet upwelling plume from the mantle transition zone. The high water content found in the WEK basalts is similar to the recent reports on Phanerozoic intraplate large igneous provinces (LIPs) and supports the presence of hydrated deep mantle reservoirs as one possible source of the LIPs. A review of the main contributions to the scientific literature between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries concerning the geology and volcanology of Monte Amiata volcano (Tuscany, central Italy) is presented. Monte Amiata, and the nearby volcano of Radicofani, are of great interest for the history of volcanology because they have the primacy of being the first to be recognized of volcanic origin in a region (Tuscany) which was not volcanically active, thirty years before Guettard's studies on the Auvergne region in France. Indeed, the Florentine botanist Pier Antonio Micheli identified as extinct volcanoes Radicofani in 1722 and Monte Amiata in 1733. Moreover, the merit of Micheli's work resides in interpreting Monte Amiata as an extinct volcano despite the absence of a conventional cone-shaped volcano morphology, and in his recognizing its rocks as lavas despite their marked differences to those produced by the known active volcanoes of its times, such as the iconic Vesuvius. During the eighteenth century and until the first half of the nineteenth century, Monte Amiata was a destination for scientific journeys by Tuscan and foreign scholars (e.g. Micheli, Baldassarri, Arduino, Fortis, Ferber, Dolomieu, Santi, Repetti, Hoffmann). In addition, its rocks were part of important collections throughout Europe visited by illustrious mineralogists. Furthermore, samples from Monte Amiata were used to illustrate the general discussions on the nature and origin of rocks such as basalt and granite. In the nineteenth century, Monte Amiata was included in the lists of known volcanoes recorded in the early treatises on volcanology made by Scrope, Daubeny, and Hoffmann, and its 'trachyte' was the subject of early essays on microscope petrography and chemical analysis of rocks, performed by vom Rath, Rosenbusch, Williams, Lacroix, and Washington. Between the end of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century, the volcano geologists of the Comitato Geologico Italiano, especially Verri, Lotti, and Sabatini, carried out field-surveys on Monte Amiata resulting in geological maps and volcano-stratigraphies. Moreover, modern petrographic (Novarese, Artini, Rodolico) and geographical (Dainelli and Olinto Marinelli) scientific studies were carried out on this volcano. Nevertheless, up to the middle part of the twentieth century, the major interest in Monte Amiata was related not to its volcanological aspects but to its natural resources: drinking waters, diatomaceous earths, earth pigments, and mercury ore-minerals. The problems of large-scale contamination of the Shufan volcanic plateau (Primorye) basalts with selective melts from xenoliths are discussed. Silico-alkaline liquids that are selectively extracted from xenoliths mix only to a limited extent with the basalt melt, and form granophyre bands that give lavas a taxitic texture. The unique compositions of buchites (pelitic xenoliths chemically modified with a diffusion interaction with basaltic magma and selectively molten politic xenoliths) are characterized. The mineral associations of buchites are represented by highly ferriferous cordierite (sekaninaite), ultra-ferriferous hercynite, (Al, Zr) Fe-armalcolite, Zr-ilmenite, mullite, sillimanite, high-lanthanum monazite, and a barium–phosphate–aluminosilicate phase. The features of the chemical and mineral composition of buchites reflect the accumulation of refractory elements (Al, Fe, Ti, Zr, Ni, and Cr) in the restitic material of xenoliths, followed by the formation of ultra-aluminous, ultra-ferriferous, and initially immiscible metal-silicate composition. Low Pb isotopic ratios in the Shufan basalts indicate selective contamination with material of the ancient cratonic basement. A steady increase in these values is observed for basalts contaminated with the upper crustal material, which also reflects the isotopic composition of buchites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reports new petrological and geochemical data for the ocean floor volcanic rocks dredged from the back‐arc basin of the Andaman Sea and elucidates their geochemical characteristics and petrogenetic aspects to provide insights into the melt generation processes, oceanic crust emplacement, and tectonomagmatic evolution of the Andaman back‐arc basin. The studied samples are porphyritic basalts with olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene representing the phenocrysts and the groundmass composition marked by plagioclase microlites, granular clinopyroxenes, and glass. Geochemical characteristics of these basalts reflect sub‐alkaline, tholeiitic composition of precursor magma that experienced clinopyroxene‐Ti magnetite fractionation. The overall geochemical trend for these basalts reflects LILE–HFSE–REE depleted MORB‐type chemistry which is modified by input from subduction‐derived components. Pronounced enrichment in selected LREE (Nd) and incompatible fluid‐mobile trace elements like Ba with positive primitive mantle‐normalized La and Sr anomalies in the majority of these basalts are attributed to transport and influx of slab‐dehydrated fluids and sediments into the depleted back‐arc mantle asthenosphere from the dehydrating subducted oceanic lithosphere in the volcanic arc front during initial stage of back‐arc rifting in the Andaman Sea. The studied basalts were derived by 10%–30% partial melting of a heterogeneous spinel lherzolitic mantle at a shallow depth. The chemical heterogeneity of the spinel lherozolite source suggests an enrichment‐depletion history of back‐arc mantle correlatable with the transitional tectonic evolution of the back‐arc basin from an initial rifting to matured spreading stage. The depleted MORB‐type mantle (DMM) beneath a juvenile back arc experienced infiltration of fluids and subduction‐derived components (SDC) from proximal subducting oceanic slab that gradually diminished with increasing distance from the arc and progressive back‐arc spreading. The episodes of melt generation and magma genesis invoke a gradual geodynamic transition from incipient back‐arc rifting to matured back‐arc spreading stages in the tectonomagmatic evolution of the Andaman back‐arc basin system. Oceanic crust generated during the incipient rifting stage sampled arc‐type melts enriched and hydrated by subduction inputs and fluid flux, while oceanic crust formed during matured back‐arc extension stage inherited trace element depleted MORB‐type mantle signatures devoid of subduction influence. Over the past few years, an increasing number of Early Jurassic magmatic rocks have been found in the southern Lhasa terrane and well studied; however, high‐Mg andesitic rocks are considerably rare, and the Mesozoic palaeotectonic framework of Neo‐Tethyan Ocean remains controversial. The present study focuses on Early Jurassic high‐Mg andesites that outcropped in the Quxu area, southern Lhasa terrane. In the Quxu area, the Early Jurassic (189 Ma) volcanic sequences are mainly composed of andesites and basaltic andesites and are unconformably in contact with Late Triassic diorites (226 Ma). These volcanic rocks are characterized by SiO2 (49–58 wt.%), MgO (6.2–11.1 wt.%) and Mg# (61–69), TiO2 (0.48–0.76 wt.%) and TFeO/MgO ratios (0.80–1.13), with geochemical features similar to those of high‐Mg andesites. Their depleted mantle‐type Nd (εNd(t) = +4.9 to +6.9) and Hf (εHf(t) = +9.6 to +14.9) isotopic compositions, together with their geochemical characteristics, suggest that the Quxu high‐Mg andesites were most likely produced by the interaction between the asthenospheric mantle and lithospheric mantle that metasomatized by slab‐derived fluids. The diorites belong to metaluminous calc‐alkaline series with highly positive εHf(t) values (+13.4 to +15.8) and are interpreted to be produced mainly by partial melting of the juvenile crustal basaltic rocks with minor input from the depleted mantle. We speculate that, in combination with the distribution of the Mesozoic magmatic rocks in the southern Lhasa terrane, the rollback of the subducting Neo‐Tethyan Ocean was the prime reason for the Early Jurassic tectono‐magmatic evolution in the southern Lhasa terrane. This process facilitated a rapid linear upwelling of the asthenospheric mantle beneath the southern Lhasa terrane and ultimately led to the large‐scale magmatic flare‐ups. The Wuhaolai mafic complex is located in the north margin of the North China Craton (NCC), Inner Mongolia. To discuss the mineralogical features, magma evolution process, and tectonic setting of the complex, we analyzed the geochemical compositions of clinopyroxene and hornblende using an electron probe. The results revealed that the parental magma of this complex belonged to the intraplate alkaline basalt series. The normal zoning texture and the relation between Mg# and FeO, Al2O3, CaO, Na2O, SiO2 and Cr2O3 suggested that the clinopyroxenes of pyroxenite and gabbro crystallized from the same parental magma. The similar CaO content of clinopyroxenes indicated that the parental magma of the Wuhaolai complex may have suffered crustal contamination. Furthermore, the characteristics of hornblende demonstrated that the magma source was modified by fluids derived from subducted slab. Based on the value of Kdcpx (0.23-0.27), the equilibrium melt with clinopyroxene exhibited a relatively low Mg# (43-53), indicating that the parental magma was derived from the lithospheric mantle and underwent crystal fractionation. The gabbro crystallization temperature and pressure was found to be lower than that of pyroxenite, indicating that gabbro was formed at a lower depth than that of pyroxenite. Combining the tectonic setting discrimination diagram of clinopyroxene with the results of previous studies on the late Paleozoic intrusions near the research area, we proposed that the Wuhaolai complex was formed in an intraplate environment. The magma source was modified by fluids derived from the subducted slab during the subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). Ocean-island basalts (OIBs) provide a unique insight into the extent of lithological heterogeneity (peridotite vs. pyroxenite) in Earth's convecting mantle. However, crustal processing of these mantle melts significantly influences minor-element concentrations in olivine phenocrysts, challenging the suitability of this widely used approach to identify lithological variations in their mantle source. Using a numerical model of magma recharge, mixing, and diffusional reequilibration, we show that this type of crustal processing--which is widely observed in OIBs--results in elevated Ni and lower Ca contents of forsterite-rich olivine, causing erroneously high estimates of the proportion of pyroxenite-derived melt. We applied our model of magma recharge and mixing to several OIBs, including the Galápagos Islands, Canary Islands, and La Réunion. In particular, we critically examined olivine compositional variations in basalts from the eastern Galápagos, which display Sr- and Pb-isotope ratios similar to normal mid-ocean-ridge basalts. While previous interpretations (based on olivine chemistry) argued for a significant contribution from pyroxenite-derived melt, our results indicate that the postulated presence of pyroxenite in the eastern Galápagos mantle is an artifact of processing of magmas and their olivine cargo as they transition through the crust, consistent with major-element and isotopic evidence for a dominantly peridotitic source in this region. This new model for magma recharge and mixing may have important implications for our understanding of lithological heterogeneity beneath OIBs globally, and it highlights the importance of considering crustal processes when attempting to interpret olivine compositions with regard to mantle heterogeneity. Magmatic evolution, partial melting and petrogenesis of the basaltic rocks from Marivan-Palangan ophiolite suite, Zagros suture zone, western Iran have been studied. Basaltic rocks mostly exhibit pillow structures and have remarkable outcrops in the crustal succession of the Marivan-Palangan ophiolite. Based on petrographic and geochemical criteria, two distinct rock types are recognized. Regarding the chemical classifications, both types are basalt. The results of CIPW norm calculations reveal their olivine tholeiitic (abyssal tholeiitic) nature. They also belong to the tholeiitic magma series close to the transitional type. The high Ti contents of the basalts are indicative of the High-Ti affinity of the ophiolites. Fractionation of variable amounts of olivine, plagioclase and clinopyroxene is inferred from variation diagrams, particularly for the type two rocks. Although both rock types resemble the E-MORB on the multi-element diagrams, they are remarkably distinct regarding the HREE and MREE contents. Partial melting models suggest that the basalts have been originated after 5-25% (type 1) and 15-25% (type 2) partial melting of a spinel lherzolite mantle source. Besides, Sm/Nd, Ce/Sm, Sm/Yb and La/Yb ratios of the samples are close to an EMII-type enriched mantle; that may be indicative of contribution of EMII-type components to the petrogenesis of the magmas. It is concluded in this research that variable degrees of partial melting of a spinel peridotite mantle source, combined with the contribution of EMII-type components generated the enriched nature of the ophiolite-related basalts in this part of the Neo-Tethyan realm. Kelud Volcano is among the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, with repeated explosive eruptions throughout its history. Here, we reconstructed the relationship between the repose period and the cumulative volume of erupted material over the past 100 years and estimated the long-term magma discharge rate and future eruptive potential and hazards. Tephra data and eruption sequences described in historical documents were used to estimate the volume and mass discharge rate. The volumes of the 1901, 1919, 1951, 1966, 1990, and 2014 eruptions were estimated as 51-296 × 106 m³. The mass discharge rates were estimated to be on the order of 107 kg/s for the 1919, 1951, and 2014 eruptions and the order of 106 kg/s for the 1966 and 1990 eruptions. Based on a linear relationship between the repose period and cumulative erupted mass, the long-term mass discharge rate was estimated as ~ 1.5 × 1010 kg/year, explaining the features of the larger eruptions (1919, 1951, and 2014) but not those of the smaller eruptions (1966 and 1990). This estimate is relatively high compared to other typical basaltic-andesitic subduction-zone volcanoes. Regional full-vector palaeosecular variation (PSV) curves are essential to further our understanding of geodynamo operation. Such curves typically lack palaeointensity information (with palaeodirectional being much more common), particularly for periods before the Holocene. Notably low palaeointensity values have been reported for significant portions of the Late Quaternary. Here, we present full-vector palaeomagnetic from the El Golfo section on El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain), spanning the age range between ∼120 and ∼450 ka, to substantiate these reported low palaeointensity values for the Canary Islands. We sampled 28 flows (mostly alkaline oceanic basalts of the shield building stage) along the Camino de Jinama, a few kilometres to the south of a section studied by Széréméta et al. for PSV. In line with their results, we observe an easterly declination deviation of ∼14° for the middle and lower part of our section. We relate this to undersampling of the complete PSV spectrum; rotation of El Hierro since ∼500 ka is deemed unlikely. Attempts to date the flows with the40Ar/39Ar method on a multicollector instrument were unsuccessful due to the presence of copious amounts of methane in the extracted gases. Stratigraphic correlation to Széréméta et al. 's section lends support to ages (technically of very low quality) obtained for the sites reported on here. Importantly, we add palaeointensity information in the present study, for the first time on El Hierro. Three different palaeointensity protocols were utilized, IZZI-Thellier, multispecimen, and pseudo-Thellier, to provide an additional consistency check and to increase the success rate. After applying strict selection criteria, reliable palaeointensities could be obtained for 18 flows, a success rate of ∼64 per cent. If more than one protocol yielded results for the same flow, the obtained intensities were often within error of each other, testifying to their robustness. Flows with a common true mean direction tend to produce similar intensity values as well; this testifies to the presumed under-sampling of PSV within the section. Obtained palaeointensity values typically range between ∼20 and ∼35 μT, distinctly lower than the present-day field value of ∼39 μT and lower than the average intensity during the Brunhes Chron. Geological characteristics and geochemical analyses are reported for the early Carboniferous pillow basalt in the Huilvshan region (west Junggar, Northwest China), with the aim to indicate its petrogenesis, magma source characteristics, and tectonic implication. This pillow basalt consists of clinopyroxene and plagioclase with trace amounts of magnetite, apatite, and chromian spinel. It is tholeiitic in composition with low concentrations of Na2O + K2O (1.52–4.74 wt.%). Similar to the N-MORB, the samples of this pillow basalt have nearly flat chondrite-normalized REE patterns ((La/Yb)N = 0.87–1.47) with insignificant Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.84–1.18), and show no obvious enrichments of LILEs and insignificant depletions in HFSEs. Petrology and geochemical characteristics suggest that this pillow basalt is the product of MORB-like magma derived from a depleted mantle corresponding to ≤4% partial melting of spinel lherzolite. SIMS analysis of the zircons separated from tuff interlayered with basalt gives a weighted average U–Pb age of 328 ± 3 Ma (MSWD = 1.4), which represents the magma eruption time in the Huilvshan region. From these observations, in combination with the previous work, we conclude that an extensional tectonic regime dominated the tectonic activity of west Junggar during early Carboniferous. As one of the most geochemically unique drill cores recovered within the Yellowstone–Snake River Plain (YSRP) province, the Sugar City geothermal test well was drilled into intra-caldera rhyolite lavas and tuffs erupted during the middle to late Pliocene and the resurgent basaltic volcanism erupted during the Pleistocene. This sequence parallels the two main stages proposed for YSRP hotspot calderas: i.e. the eruption of several large-volume, ash-flow tuff sheets followed by caldera collapse, then cessation of major rhyolitic activity and gradual subsidence accompanied by filling and eventual burial of the caldera by basalt lava flows. We employ stratigraphic relationships, paleomagnetism, and major, trace element, and Sr–Nd isotope geochemistry to develop models for the origin of the basaltic and rhyolitic magmas within a geographical and temporal context. The basalts are characterized by distinct groupings based on depth and geochemistry and reflect the dominant compositions observed on the surface, e.g. Snake River olivine tholeiite (SROT) and evolved type (e.g. Craters of the Moon). We also observe contaminated basalts that interacted with rhyolite/granite. The basaltic magma formed by shallow partial melting in the plume channel carved into the lithosphere. The older rhyolites preserve the classical characteristics of A-type granites and display major element and trace element concentrations typical for Eastern SRP caldera centres and minimal stratigraphic variation. Multiple lines of evidence document extensive magmatic differentiation and coupled basalt–rhyolite interactions. We find that the most plausible origin for the rhyolites is via partial melting of a hybrid source, comprising Archean crustal components and younger juvenile mafic intrusions. Assimilation of hydrothermally altered material is also required for some eruptive units. The rhyolites did not evolve from residual magma left over from the climactic Kilgore eruption (4·0 Ma), but instead represent discrete magma generation events in the course of a few hundred thousand years between 4·0 to 3·8 Ma. Beginning at approximately 3.3 Ma, basalts were able to erupt through the solidified composite pluton that formed below the caldera. Feldspar megacrysts in Late Miocene-Pliocene maars, diatremes and basaltic lava flows in the northern part of the Pannonian Basin span the compositional range from Na-sanidine, through anorthoclase to oligoclase and andesine. Newly formed An82 plagioclase (bytownite) crystallized within composite melt inclusions hosted by the oligoclase. Powder X-ray diffraction data indicate strong structural disorder diagnostic of the high albite-high sanidine series typical of magmatic feldspars. The magmatic origin is also corroborated by chemical compositions, which plot along the 700 ± 50 °C solvus, with the exception of the most sodic Ab79 plagioclase megacryst projecting along the 600 °C isotherm. Vibrational spectroscopic records document that the basic groups of magmatic feldspars can be identified by the specific pattern of the group I and IV bands in the 350-600 cm-1 range. The IVa band at 560-570 cm-1 is diagnostic for triclinic feldspars. The anorthite and orthoclase contents can be inferred from the 506-515 cm-1 (Ia) and 473-486 cm-1 (Ib) peak separation values combined with the Ia bandwidth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Capo Marargiu Volcanic District (CMVD) is an Oligo-Miocene calc-alkaline complex located in northwestern Sardinia (Italy) and characterized by the widespread occurrence of basaltic to andesitic domes. One of these domes hosts abundant crystal-rich enclaves with millimeter-to-centimeter sized clinopyroxenes showing intriguing textural features as a result of complex magma dynamics. To better understand the mechanisms governing the early evolution of the CMVD magmatic system, such clinopyroxene phenocrysts have been investigated in terms of their major, trace element, and isotopic compositions. Three distinct clinopyroxene populations have been identified, i.e., Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. Type 1 appears as the sub-rounded cores of diopsidic clinopyroxenes with overgrowth textures corresponding to Type 2 and Type 3. These latter populations may also occur as single isolated crystals. Type 2 diopsidic pyroxene exhibits oscillatory zoning and spongy cellular textures with Type 3 overgrowths, whereas Type 3 are polycrystalline augitic glomerocrysts with occasional Type 2 overgrowths. The crystal overgrowths are striking evidence of magma recharge dynamics. Type 1 (CpxMg#83–92), Type 2 (CpxMg#75–82), and Type 3 (CpxMg#72–79) are, respectively, in equilibrium with Sardinian mantle-derived high-Mg basalts (HMB with meltMg#56–73), least differentiated basaltic andesites (BA with meltMg#45–56) and evolved basaltic andesites (EBA with meltMg#41–50). Type 1 and Type 2 are diopsidic phenocrysts that have evolved along a similar geochemical path (i.e., linear increase of Al, Ti, La, and Hf contents, as well as negligible Eu-anomaly) controlled by olivine + clinopyroxene + amphibole fractionation. This differentiation path is related to phenocryst crystallization from hydrous HMB and BA magmas stalling at moderate crustal pressures. The occurrence of globular sulfides within Type 1 suggests saturation of the HMB magma with a sulfide liquid under relatively low redox conditions. Moreover, Type 1 clinopyroxenes show variable 87Sr/86Sr ratios ascribable either to assimilation of crustal material by HMB magma or a mantle source variably contaminated by crustal components. In contrast, Type 3 augitic phenocrysts recorded the effect of plagioclase and titanomagnetite fractionation (i.e., low Al and Ti contents associated with high La and Hf concentrations, as well as important Eu-anomaly) from more degassed EBA magmas ponding at shallow depths. Rare titanite associated to Type 3 and titanomagnetite crystals point to high oxidizing conditions for EBA magmas. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of both Type 2 and Type 3 are almost constant, suggesting a limited interaction of BA and EBA magmas with the country rock. The overall textural and compositional features of Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 clinopyroxene phenocrysts lead to the conclusion that CMVD was characterized by a polybaric plumbing system where geochemically distinct magmas crystallized and mixed under variable environmental conditions. Geochemical modeling using the basalt composition analyzed at the Vega 2 landing site indicates that intermediate to silicic liquids can be generated by fractional crystallization and equilibrium partial melting. Fractional crystallization modeling using variable pressures (0.01 GPa to 0.5 GPa) and relative oxidation states (FMQ 0 and FMQ -1) of either a wet (H2O = 0.5 wt%) or dry (H2O = 0 wt%) parental magma can yield silicic (SiO2 > 60 wt%) compositions that are similar to terrestrial ferroan rhyolite. Hydrous (H2O = 0.5 wt%) partial melting can yield intermediate (trachyandesite to andesite) to silicic (trachydacite) compositions at all pressures but requires relatively high temperatures (≥ 950°C) to generate the initial melt at intermediate to low pressure whereas at high pressure (0.5 GPa) the first melts will be generated at much lower temperatures (< 800°C). Anhydrous partial melt modeling yielded mafic (basaltic andesite) and alkaline compositions (trachybasalt) but the temperature required to produce the first liquid is very high (≥ 1130°C). Consequently, anhydrous partial melting is an unlikely process to generate derivative liquids. The modeling results indicate that, under certain conditions, the Vega 2 composition can generate silicic liquids that produce granitic and rhyolitic rocks. Primitive basalt melt inclusions from Borgarhraun, northern Iceland, display large correlated variations in CO2 and nonvolatile incompatible trace elements (ITEs) such as Nb, Th, Rb, and Ba. The average CO2/ITE ratios of the Borgarhraun melt inclusion population are precisely determined (e.g., CO2/Nb = 391 ± 16; 2σM [two standard errors of the mean], n = 161). These data, along with published data on five other populations of undegassed mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB) glasses and melt inclusions, demonstrate that upper mantle CO2/Ba and CO2/Rb are nearly homogeneous, while CO2/Nb and CO2/Th are broadly correlated with long-term indices of mantle heterogeneity reflected in Nd isotopes (143Nd/144Nd) in five of the six regions of the upper mantle examined thus far. Our results suggest that heterogeneous carbon contents of the upper mantle are longlived features, and that average carbon abundances of the mantle sources of Atlantic MORB are higher by a factor of two than those of Pacific MORB. This observation is correlated with a similar distinction in water contents and trace elements characteristic of subduction fluids (Ba, Rb). We suggest that the upper mantle beneath the younger Atlantic Ocean basin contains components of hydrated and carbonated subduction-modified mantle from prior episodes of Iapetus subduction that were entrained and mixed into the upper mantle during opening of the Atlantic Ocean basin.
