Exam period can be a stressful time for students, and having examples of past papers to help prepare for the tests can be extremely helpful. It is possible that past exams are already shared on your campus--by professors in their specific courses, via student unions or groups, or between individual students. In this article, we will go over the workflows and infrastructure to support the systematic collection, provision of access to, and repository management of past exam papers. We will discuss platform-agnostic considerations of opt-in versus opt-out submission, access restriction, discovery, retention schedules, and more. Finally, we will share the University of Toronto setup, including a dedicated instance of DSpace, batch metadata creation and ingest scripts, and our submission and retention workflows that take into account the varying needs of stakeholders across our three campuses. For those receiving funding from the UK HEFCE-funded Open Educational Resource Programme (2009-2012), the sustainability of project outputs was one of a number of essential goals. Our approach for the hosting and distribution of health and life science open educational resources (OER) was based on the utilisation of the WordPress.org blogging platform and search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques to curate content and widen discovery. This paper outlines the approaches taken and tools used at the time, and reflects upon the effectiveness of web strategies several years post-funding. The paper concludes that using WordPress.org as a platform for sharing and curating OER, and the adoption of a pragmatic approach to SEO, offers cheap and simple ways for small-scale open education projects to be effective and sustainable.

The period of 2010 to 2014 marked a relatively stable stage in the evolving quality assurance system for Ontario postsecondary education, particularly following massive changes after 2000. The current system consists of three frameworks overseen respectively by three quality assurance agencies--the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance, the Ontario College Quality Assurance Service, and the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board, each serving different purposes. This paper uses van Vught and Westerheijden's (1994) general model of quality assessment and Jeliazkova and Westerheijden's (2002) Phase Model of quality assurance systems development as heuristic tools for the analysis. The following four areas are discussed: formalized quality mechanisms with diversity; the arms-length tripartite relationship with a distinction between self-regulation and government regulation; mixed phases of quality assurance development and the maturing process; and gaps in the system. It is argued that within fifteen years, a comprehensive and relatively mature quality assurance system with diverse but rigorous mechanisms has been developed for Ontario postsecondary education although a few deficiencies exist, including the continued lack of coordination within the system. The evolution of the system appears to reflect a path trajectory of governance structure development of the Ontario postsecondary education system as well as be a result of interactions between the local and the global.

John served as the first Prime Minister of Canada for about nineteen years, while his son, Hugh, served as Premier of Manitoba for less than a year. Records related to John include materials from his legal practice in Kingston, Canada.

Stamp collectors frequently donate their stamps to cultural heritage institutions. As digitization becomes more prevalent for other kinds of materials, it is worth exploring how cultural heritage institutions are digitizing their philatelic materials. This paper begins with a review of the literature about the purpose of metadata, current metadata standards, and metadata that are relevant to philatelists. The paper then examines the digital philatelic collections of four large cultural heritage institutions, discussing the metadata standards and elements employed by these institutions. The paper concludes with a recommendation to create international standards that describe metadata management explicitly for philatelic materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a brief overview of the concept of the transnational archive as a counterpoint to the idea that a national archive is necessarily a locus of a static idea of nation. The Canadian national archives is used as a case study of an archives that was transnational in its inception, and one that has continued to change in its mandate and materials as a response to patterns in migration and changing notions of multiculturalism as a Canadian federal policy. The article focuses on the preservation of human rights archival sources in the U.S. and Canada. In the post World War II war era, the crimes perpetrated by Nazi Germany have given rise to a historically unprecedented international human rights movement that now comprises thousands of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) worldwide. Despite the human rights movement's global presence and influence, contemporary international human rights NGOs remain curiously underdocumented in research universities in the U.S. and throughout the world. The reasons being, until recently many NGOs have considered their investigative data far too sensitive to turn over to external institutions; research archives and libraries in leading universities have been slow in recognizing the importance of human rights as a significant sociopolitical issue requiring serious attention; most research archives confront serious problems concerning scarce resources, inadequate staffing, and storage facilities filled to near capacity; the inadequacy of preserving human rights evidence has been compounded by the reluctance of private foundations to fund archival endeavors because of the enormous demands placed upon foundation resources from competing projects.

This article contains a table of contents to the 4408 pages of official testimony from Ontario’s Royal Commission on Book Publishing, which operated from 1971 to 1973 looking into questions about the business of publishing in Canada. The table of contents helps researchers discover who testified before the commission—whether as individuals or on behalf of their company or organization—and when they testified in order to be able to find the official transcript of their testimony and their accompanying brief in the archival files held at the Archives of Ontario (RG 18-164). The article begins with a short introduction to the commission and its work, followed by six excerpts from the testimony from Quill & Quire, Peter Martin, the McGraw-Hill Company of Canada, Campbell B. Understanding the development of landscape patterns over broad spatial and temporal scales is a major contribution to ecological sciences and is a critical area of research for forested land management. Boreal forests represent an excellent case study for such research because these forests have undergone significant changes over recent decades. We analyzed the temporal trends of four widely-used landscape pattern indices for boreal forests of Canada: forest cover, largest forest patch index, forest edge density, and core (interior) forest cover. The indices were computed over landscape extents ranging from 5,000 ha (n = 18,185) to 50,000 ha (n = 1,662) and across nine major ecozones of Canada. We used 26 years of Landsat satellite imagery to derive annualized trends of the landscape pattern indices. The largest declines in forest cover, largest forest patch index, and core forest cover were observed in the Boreal Shield, Boreal Plain, and Boreal Cordillera ecozones. Forest edge density increased at all landscape extents for all ecozones. Rapidly changing landscapes, defined as the 90th percentile of forest cover change, were among the most forested initially and were characterized by four times greater decrease in largest forest patch index, three times greater increase in forest edge density, and four times greater decrease in core forest cover compared with all 50,000 ha landscapes. Moreover, approximately 18% of all 50,000 ha landscapes did not change due to a lack of disturbance. The article presents information about various documents and reports related to insurance. The workmen's compensation act of Ontario carries no important provision not before known in the world's practice. Yet, taken all in all, it is of much more than ordinary interest. It is radical; it is the seventeenth compensation law in the British Empire; and its field is near to people, in that Canadian province, which, in an industrial way, is the most, advanced and the most closely related to this country. As other British acts, it naturally shows many influences from earlier legislation of the mother country. In organic relation to the compensation law is a new employers' liability law. In fact, the two laws are but parts of the one act, part 1 covering compensation and the brief part 2 covering liability. Neither part applies to farm laborers or domestic or menial servants or their employers; and, apparently, neither applies to the general run of public employments, but only to private industry and such industry conducted by minor public bodies as may be brought under part 1.

This article examines the colonial archive in Canada to consider the archive-as-subject which can be used to provide information on modern debates on citizenship and diaspora. It is explained that the colonial archive of Canadian immigration history does not only offer a historical context for reading about diaspora but serves as a location for dialogic engagement. Also, the archives become more understandable with the inclusion of diasporic Canadian literature.
