There is a relative lack of research on the development of creepage discharge in aged oil-paper insulation subjected to AC-DC combined voltage in converter transformers. In this study, based on the physical and chemical properties of oil-paper, we propose a sphere-plate electrode model to study the creepage discharge parameters and characteristic spectra of aged oil-paper subjected to AC-DC combined voltage. The results show that the creepage discharge inception voltage of aged oil-paper is related to the AC voltage component of the AC-DC combined voltage. However, when the DC voltage component is 60 kV, the flashover phenomenon was found to occur in one of the severely aged samples before the AC voltage was applied. Despite being subjected to the same DC voltage, the flashover phenomenon did not occur in three other samples aged to different degrees. Large-amplitude discharges were found to appear earlier in the severely aged samples. At the same creepage discharge stage, as the aging time of the oil-paper increased, the number of large-amplitude discharges was found to rapidly increase, and the time interval between adjacent discharges was found to gradually decrease. At each stage of the creepage discharge, the small-amplitude discharge has a “hump” shaped distribution. The larger the DC voltage component, the shorter the endurance time of aged oil-paper, and the more severe the damage to the oil-paper. The DC voltage component was found to have an accelerating effect on the development of creepage discharge in aged oil-paper insulation.

Water-activated paper-based batteries are expected to be low-cost disposable power sources for paper-based sensor applications. In this study, a disposable paper-based battery was developed. The battery used activated carbon powder loaded on a carbon sheet as the anode. The cathode was coated directly on a paper filter to fabricate an integrated proton exchange membrane cathode. Copper (II) chloride mixed with multiwalled carbon nanotube (CuCl2/CNT) was used as the cathode. Water was injected into the anode electrode to activate the battery. The maximum power density of 134. 6 μ W /cm2 was obtained with the anode loaded 17 mg cm−2 activated carbon powder. The power output of the battery is proportional to the amount of activated carbon loaded on the anode.

As a new type of energy harvesting device, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy effectively. Paper-based materials have gained considerable attention for use in flexible energy harvesting device applications because of their flexibility, environmental friendliness (i.e., they are biodegradable and renewable), and foldability. This work proposes a strategy to use cellulose fibers layer as a spacer of paper-based triboelectric nanogenerator (P-TENG). The P-TENG consists of a three-layer fiber material and a copper electrode. The three-layer fiber material comprises nylon, cellulose, and polypropylene, where the cellulose fiber layer contains millimeter-sized holes and is used as a spacer. Because of its attractive cuttability and flexibility properties, the P-TENG can be applied on a large scale in complex environments (e.g., sports fields, driving training fields) to detect signal changes caused by external pressure This type of device has great potential for application to the large-scale TENG field and may provide a new solution for TENG industrialization.

This paper presents a broadband, simple, re-useable and low-cost approach for noninvasive sweat monitoring using a passive microwave circuit and a cellulose filter paper as a superstrate. The proposed sensor is composed of filter paper with the ability to absorb the sample liquid under test (LUT) placed on top of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line. Various samples of sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions with concentrations in the range of 0.01-2 mol/L and models of artificial sweat are used to test the proposed sensor. The difference in transmission coefficient (S21) between dry and wet states is used to determine the concentrations of tested solutions in the band of 1-6 GHz. The sensor detects concentrations as low as 0.01 mol/L (0.58 g/L) and quantities as low as 137 μL with a maximum sensitivity of 46.7 dB/g/L. The proposed sensor presents a simple approach to sample and characterize liquids with enhanced sensitivity and consistent performance using microwave signals.

Trap plays an important role in the charge transportation of three-layer oil-paper and the investigation of trap parameters at different degradation degree is of great significance for further research of the partial discharge (PD) mechanism. This article considers the turn-to-turn structure of on-board traction transformer. A defect model of three-layer oil-paper insulation was designed for PD test. The PD degradation samples are selected from the inception of PD to the breakdown of PD to study the characteristics of surface potential decay on degradation samples by using isothermal surface potential decay method. Given that, the trap distribution at different degradation stages was calculated and its influence on PD characteristics was investigated. The result shows that AC fluctuation voltages caused by inter-harmonic has a great influence on PD distribution, surface charge distribution and trap distribution. With the increase of degradation, the decay rate of surface potential increases and the decay rate of AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that pure AC. And also, the number of shallow trap with AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that with pure AC. The rate of free charge increases with the number of shallow trap increasing. More free electrons involves in the process of PD, accelerating the aging rate of three-layer oil paper samples. Therefore, it can be concluded that surface charge and trap distribution are helpful to clarify PD mechanism.

Insulated tubular busbar is a new type of current-carrying equipment with excellent performance. However, the research on this equipment is insufficient because of the short application and the lack of technical digestion, which has resulted in many accidents. In this paper, the full-scale model of epoxy-impregnated-paper insulated tubular busbar with bubble defects was designed and produced, its electrical breakdown process was investigated by withstand voltage test. In the experiment, the failure mode of breakdown caused by gas expansion was found for the first time. The research showed that the electrical-mechanical breakdown process could be divided into two stages: gas increase stage and breakdown threshold stage. The research also obtained the characteristics and the change criterions of the two stages. The gas in the bubble defects generated from epoxy decomposition which caused by partial discharge. When the gas pressure exceeds the critical fracture toughness of the bubble defects wall, the unstable crack extension occurs, therefore, improving the ability about resistance to partial discharge of epoxy resin or improving the fracture toughness of epoxy resin by modifying would enhance the breakdown performance of insulated tubular busbar. The result also has reference significance for other epoxy-impregnated-paper insulated electrical equipment.

An electrical tree discharge model of multilayer insulation paper was prepared, and a voltage of 20 kV was used for electrical tree cultivation and initiation tests. Based on the microscopic image information and partial discharge (PD) information during the aging of the electrical tree, the development of electrical tree discharges between layers of paper comprising epoxy resin-impregnated paper insulation was studied. The results show that, by analysing PD information such as the discharge volume phase spectrum and the discharge repetition rate phase spectrum, the development of the electrical tree branch progresses in four stages: initial, growth, stagnation, and bursting. During the growth and stagnation stages, the main discharge paths of the electrical tree are mainly formed, and there are many filamentous fibres on the path edge. During the burst stage, more branches will be formed on the electrical tree, which will cause the greatest damage to the insulation. With the extension of the electrical tree path, the discharge magnitude and discharge times also increase. There are specific discharge patterns in different growth stages of the electrical tree, and the number of discharge events in each positive half-cycle is significantly greater than that in a negative half-cycle. Combining the microscopic image information and PD information during the aging of such an electrical tree, a theoretical basis for evaluating insulation state by PD monitoring is realised. The long-chain molecules of cellulose and epoxy resin break bonds and oxidise, which decompose into a large number of free radicals, monosaccharides, and other low-molecular-weight products.

This paper presents the design and analysis of a paper-based chipless RFID sensor for wetness content measurement in plant leaves. The sensor is designed using a passive microwave resonator to measure the ambient physical parameter. The resonator is designed with a rectangular loop inductively coupled with an interdigital capacitor. The experimental analysis of the designed sensor is illustrated here to prove its efficacy. The resonator provides adequate backscattered signal for wireless measurement in the microwave frequency band. When interrogated with a couple of UWB antennas and a VNA, it yields accurate leaf wetness response of the plant. The commercial competence of this sensing device is validated through its experimental analysis on three different types of leaf samples. This sensor is suitable for plant health monitoring in any small-scale gardening applications such as nurseries and greenhouses.

The low frequency section of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) of oil-paper insu- lation system can effectively reflect the ageing state and moisture of the oil-immersed paper. Meanwhile, steady-state insulation resistance is the one of indexes for the condition of transformer. In actual measurement, these two both are time-consuming and poor accessibility, thereby restraining their field applications. Aim at this problem, this paper analyses the polarization process of the oil-paper insulation in transformer, and adopts a low frequency equivalent circuit model for the oil-paper insulation to characterize the polarization process at low frequency. The simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (SAPSO) algorithm is proposed to identify the parameters in equivalent circuit, which are affected by change of insulation state. Compared with the experimental results, the errors of the steady-state insulation resistance and the tan δ below 10-3 Hz, which are calculated by the identified parameters, are less than 2.5%. This method can avoid the influence from external environment and reduce the measurement time. The time and frequency domain parameters calculated can provide reference for the ageing assessment of oil-immersed paper.

Kevlar pulp treated with low-temperature plasma and nano cellulose fibrils (NCFs) have been introduced as reinforcements in the preparation for composite insulating paper with low relative permittivity, dielectric loss, good mechanical properties, and thermal stability. More polar groups of Kevlar fibers could be exposed after plasma treatment. Results showed that the relative permittivity of the composite paper containing 20% Kevlar pulp, 10% NCF, and 70% softwood pulp is decreased by 29.6% and the dielectric loss is decreased by 43.2% at 50 Hz, 25°, compared with the conventional paper formed by pure softwood pulp. The change was due to the introduction of Kevlar pulp with intrinsic low dielectric constant and loss, which decreases the whole polarizability of the paper. The mechanical properties of the composite paper became worse after introducing 20% Kevlar pulp. About 10% NCF can work as a mechanical reinforcement to compensate for the tensile and Yang's modulus loss. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that NCF could fill the void defects and improve the interface bonding of the fibers to enhance the paper mechanical properties. The composite paper also had better insulating and thermal properties than the conventional paper. It has been concluded that the Kevlar pulp/NCF/softwood pulp composite paper has the potential to replace the pure softwood paper for the application of high-voltage ac transformer insulation.

Researchers from academia and the corporate-sector rely on scholarly digital libraries to access articles. Attackers take advantage of innocent users who consider the articles' files safe and thus open PDF-files with little concern. In addition, researchers consider scholarly libraries a reliable, trusted, and untainted corpus of papers. For these reasons, scholarly digital libraries are an attractive-target and inadvertently support the proliferation of cyber-attacks launched via malicious PDF-files. In this study, we present related vulnerabilities and malware distribution approaches that exploit the vulnerabilities of scholarly digital libraries. We evaluated over two-million scholarly papers in the CiteSeerX library and found the library to be contaminated with a surprisingly large number (0.3-2%) of malicious PDF documents (over 55% were crawled from the IPs of US-universities). We developed a two layered detection framework aimed at enhancing the detection of malicious PDF documents, Sec-Lib, which offers a security solution for large digital libraries. Sec-Lib includes a deterministic layer for detecting known malware, and a machine learning based layer for detecting unknown malware. Our evaluation showed that scholarly digital libraries can detect 96.9% of malware with Sec-Lib, while minimizing the number of PDF-files requiring labeling, and thus reducing the manual inspection efforts of security-experts by 98%.

Oil-immersed insulation paper (OIP) bushing is one of the most important equipment in power transmission and distribution systems. Moisture is one of the most serious factors that affect the insulation status of OIP bushing. In this paper, the OIP bushing was assumed to be in a stable and simplicity condition, and then the transient moisture distribution of capacitor core and its effects on the electric field were studied. First, by dissecting a 110 kV OIP bushing, the specific sizes for modelling were obtained. Afterwards, a moisture diffusion model for OIP bushing was established based on COMSOL Multiphysics software, and it was also verified by moisture diffusion experiment. Then, the moisture distribution for different conditions were obtained and analyzed. Finally, a model for the electric field of OIP bushing was established, and then the effects of moisture on the electric field were studied.

When the inner insulation of oil-impregnated paper bushing breaks down in service, gases decomposed by oil and paper may cause an explosion. The explosion of bushing occurs from time to time because of the lack of an effective monitoring method. In order to provide an effective online monitoring method for the bushing to avoid explosion, this paper presents a method to monitor the PD defect in bushing by measuring the inner pressure of bushing. In this paper, the relationship of variation between characteristic gases content and inner pressure is studied, the effect of inner temperature on inner pressure is analyzed and the method for reducing this effect is also presented, and the monitoring method is proved to be useful by PD tests on a real bushing. The results show that the inner pressure increases obviously due to the generation of characteristic gases by internal discharge in oil-impregnated paper bushing, and the pressure increases with the deterioration of the discharge; although the inner pressure has a great influence on the inner pressure, the influence can be reduced or eliminated greatly by the method of common-mode rejection. According to the results, the internal discharge defect of the oil-impregnated paper bushing can be detected by monitoring the pressure, and the bushing explosion can be avoided.

The aging of the transformer oil-paper insulation distributes spatially, which results in changes in paper resistivity in different regions. This paper establishes an iterative inversion algorithm using the finite element method to calculate the oil-immersed paper resistivity in different regions of a transformer. This algorithm sets the transformer dielectric loss factor tan δ at low frequency, the dielectric parameters of the transformer oil as inputs and the oil-immersed paper resistivity as output. The resistivity obtained from inversion can be used as a reference to access the insulation state of the oil-paper insulation. This paper aims at achieving the nondestructive detection of the partial state of the oil-paper insulation.

Transformer insulation paper is a key indicator for transformer remaining operational life. Paper decomposition is evaluated using the degree of polymerization (DP) which calls for samples of insulation paper from operating transformers. Since collecting such paper samples is extremely difficult, other indicators have been used to indirectly reveal the DP value of insulation paper. This includes dissolved gases in transformer oil such as carbon oxides and hydrocarbon gases, furan compounds, methanol, ethanol, and moisture along with some oil characteristics such as interfacial tension. However, for the same oil sample, these individual parameters lead to different DP values. This is attributed to the lack of accuracy of the established mathematical and artificial intelligence models correlating DP with each of the above mentioned individual parameters. This paper presents a self-learning method to estimate the DP value of transformer insulation paper based on multiple transformer oil aging parameters. The proposed method comprises data processing, fuzzy c-means and linear regression. Results reveal that estimating the DP value based on multiple aging parameters is more accurate than estimating it using one single parameter as per the current practice. The proposed method not only helps to understand the correlation between multiple oil aging parameters and the DP value of paper insulation, but also promotes the establishment of more accurate life assessment models for power transformers based on these oil aging parameters.

Failures of bushing caused by corrosive sulfur has gradually appeared in recent years. Apart from copper and sulfur, certain amount of aluminum was also found both in oil and paper after disassembling. The corrosion mechanism of the aluminum foil and its effect on oil-paper insulation were unknown. In this study, series of sulfur corrosion experiments were taken to investigate the sulfur corrosion of aluminum foil. The results showed the aluminum foil could certainly be corroded in oil containing corrosive sulfur (DBDS). Thermal products of insulting paper triggered the corrosion by removing the alumina film on the surface. Then, the contact corrosion occurred between aluminum and DBDS. In addition, the mechanisms of corrosion products generation both in oil and on paper were studied. The corrosion products in oil was DBDS-Al(3,4) and that on paper was RCOOAln. It caused the decrease of electrical properties of oil-paper. Particularly, the dielectric loss of oil and paper were dramatically enhanced.

One of the main problems faced by libraries, archives and collectors is the mold degradation of the paper-based documents, books, artworks etc. Microfungi (molds) emerge in regular storage conditions of such items (humidity, usually over 50%, and temperatures under 21 °C). If the removal of the visible mycelium is relatively easy, there is always the problem of the subsequent appearance of mold as the spores remain trapped in the cellulosic, fibrillary texture, which acts as a net. Moreover, due to improper hand hygiene bacteria contamination, old books could represent a source of biohazard, being colonized with human pathogens. An easy and accessible method of decontamination, which could offer long term protection is therefore needed. Here, we present a facile use of the ZnO nanopowders as antimicrobial agents, suitable for cellulose-based products, conferring an extended antibacterial and anti-microfungal effect. The proposed method does not adversely impact on the quality of the cellulose documents and could be efficiently used for biodegradation protection.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with the polymer anion poly(styrenesulfonate), PEDOT:PSS, is a common electrochromic material used in the preparation of electrochromic devices (ECDs). In this paper, the PEDOT:PSS doped with a solvent was used both as the electrode and the electrochromic functional layer for fabrication of ECDs on absorptive paper surfaces. The doped PEDOT:PSS dispersion was assessed for the film-forming evenness, sheet resistance and conductivity, and the performance of prepared ECDs for their color contrast and switching dynamics. The ECD performance is discussed in relation to the absorptive characteristics of the substrates. The results indicate that it is feasible to prepare ECDs onto absorptive substrates, despite the partial polymer material imbibition into them. The extent of polymer absorption influences the ECD performance: an increased absorption reduces the color contrast but speeds up the color switching. The electrochemical properties of the used solid electrolyte were found to be crucial for functioning of the ECDs. Insufficient ion transport and associated high resistance led to failure of the devices.

In many of machine parts and structural components, materials surface would be worked. In this study, residual stresses on the surfaces were measured by X-ray diffraction method, and effects of surface working on the residual stresses were examined. In case of lathe machining of type 304 stainless steel bar, the residual stresses in circumferential directions are tensile, and those in axial directions are almost compressive. Highly tensile residual stresses in the circumferential directions were improved by emery paper polishing. 10 to 20 times of polishing changes high tensile residual stresses to compressive residual stresses. In the case of shot peening on a type 304 stainless steel plate, the compressive residual stress inside is several hundred MPa lower than that on the surface. By applying the emery paper polishing to the shot peened surface 10 or 20 times, the residual stress on the surface is improved to &minus, 700 MPa. While fatigue strength at 288 &deg, C in the air of the shot peened material is 30 MPa higher than solution heat treated and electro-polished material, the fatigue strength of the shot peened and followed by emery paper polished material is 60 MPa higher. Thus, the emery paper polishing is simple and a very effective process for improvement of the residual stresses.

Different amounts of a stable aqueous TiO2 hydrosol were used to fabricate paper sheets having photocatalytic activity. The TiO2 hydrosol was prepared in aqueous medium using titanium butoxide as precursor and acetic acid as catalyst for the hydrolysis of titanium butoxide. An aging process at room temperature and atmospheric pressure was finally applied to obtain crystalline anatase TiO2 hydrosol. The effects of different TiO2 hydrosol loadings on the mechanical strength and barrier properties of modified paper sheets were investigated in detail. The photocatalytic behavior of TiO2-modified paper sheets was investigated as well using methylene blue (MB) as target pollutant.

In this study, the effects of the mixing conditions of waste paper sludge ash (WPSA) on the strength and bearing capacity of controlled low-strength material (CLSM) were evaluated, and the optimal mixing conditions were used to evaluate the strength characteristics of CLSM with recyclable WPSA. The strength and bearing capacity of CLSM with WPSA were evaluated using unconfined compressive strength tests and plate bearing tests, respectively. The unconfined compressive strength test results show that the optimal mixing conditions for securing 0.8&ndash, 1.2 MPa of target strength under 5% of cement content conditions can be obtained when both WPSA and fly ash are used. This is because WPSA and fly ash, which act as binders, have a significant impact on overall strength when the cement content is low. The bearing capacity of weathered soil increased from 550 to 575 kPa over time, and CLSM with WPSA increased significantly, from 560 to 730 kPa. This means that the bearing capacity of CLSM with WPSA was 2.0% higher than that of weathered soil immediately after construction, furthermore, it was 27% higher at 60 days of age. In addition, the allowable bearing capacity of CLSM corresponding to the optimal mixing conditions was evaluated, and it was found that this value increased by 30.4% until 60 days of age. This increase rate was 6.7 times larger than that of weathered soil (4.5%). Therefore, based on the allowable bearing capacity calculation results, CLSM with WPSA was applied as a sewage pipe backfill material. It was found that CLSM with WPSA performed better as backfill and was more stable than soil immediately after construction. The results of this study confirm that CLSM with WPSA can be utilized as sewage pipe backfill material.

Globally, the recommendation services have become important due to the fact that they support e-commerce applications and different research communities. Recommender systems have a large number of applications in many fields, including economic, education, and scientific research. Different empirical studies have shown that the recommender systems are more effective and reliable than the keyword-based search engines for extracting useful knowledge from massive amounts of data. The problem of recommending similar scientific articles in scientific community is called scientific paper recommendation. Scientific paper recommendation aims to recommend new articles or classical articles that match researchers' interests. It has become an attractive area of study since the number of scholarly papers increases exponentially. In this paper, we first introduce the importance and advantages of the paper recommender systems. Second, we review the recommendation algorithms and methods, such as Content-based, collaborative filtering, graph-based, and hybrid methods. Then, we introduce the evaluation methods of different recommender systems. Finally, we summarize the open issues in the paper recommender systems, including cold start, sparsity, scalability, privacy, serendipity, and unified scholarly data standards. Though recycling of waste paper is widely practiced but usually it is downgraded to lower valued recycled waste paper. Based on this concern, we report the development of novel NaOH/urethane aqueous system for extraction of microfibrillated cellulose from waste paper. The purity of so obtained microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) was evaluated by morphological tests using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and by evaluation of physicochemical properties using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Morphologies of MFC studied by SEM and TEM showed that the size of purified cellulose fibrils reduced when compared to that of waste paper but fibrils are cleaner and smoother due to the removal of talc and lignin. XRD analysis revealed that MFC exhibits good crystallinity. The utility of sulfonated and pristine microfibrillar cellulose in removal of lead from contaminated water is also reported. Our results show that renewable, sustainable, cheap, and waste biomass like waste paper can be used for producing valuable second-generation high-value products.

D0bleaching wastewater from E. globulus Kraft pulping industry was treated by Fenton and photo-Fenton processes. The aim was to optimize the operational conditions for adsorbable organic halides (AOX) removal, namely oxidant concentration, [H2O2], catalyst concentration, [Fe2＋], and treatment time, using the central composite experimental design (CCED) tool. Temperature and pH were set at 60 ºC and 2, respectively, which are similar to the natural values of the D0bleaching wastewater. Both processes showed potential to remove AOX from D0with 177 - 178 mM H2O2 and 10 min reaction time. Maximum AOX removal was 85 % for the Fenton process with 8.5 mM Fe2＋, and 95 % for the photo-Fenton process with 2.0 mM Fe2＋ and UV irradiance 142 W.m− 2. For both methods, the only statistically significant variable (p=0.05) was the concentration of oxidant, [H2O2]. This paper reports the effect of process orientation on the mechanical behavior and piezoelectricity of electroactive paper (EAPap) made from natural cotton pulp. EAPap is fabricated by a casting and wet drawing of cellulose film after dissolving cotton with LiCl and DMAc solvent. During the fabrication, permanent wrinkles, a possible factor for performance deterioration, were found in the films. Finite element method was introduced to identify the formation mechanism behind the wrinkles. The simulation results show that the wrinkles were caused by buckling and are inevitable under any conditions. The tensile and piezoelectric tests show that the orientation dependency of the stretched EAPap gives the anisotropic characteristics on both mechanical and piezoelectric properties. In this research, the anisotropic elastic moduli and Poisson&rsquo, s ratios are reported. The piezoelectric charge constant of EAPap in the linear elastic is calculated. The piezoelectric charge constants of EAPap are associated with the alignment angle in the order of 45&deg, &gt, 0&deg, 90&deg, due to the strong shear effect. The higher stretching ratio gives the higher piezoelectricity due to the alignment of the molecular chains and the microstructure in EAPap. The highest piezoelectric charge constant is found to be 12 pC/N at a stretching ratio of 1.6 and aligning angle of 45&deg

This article adds more information to the problem of natural ester use as an electroinsulating fluid in cellulose paper-oil systems, e.g., for use in power transformers. An accelerated thermal aging (120, 140 and 160 °C) of samples consisting of cellulose paper (transformerboard), a treated natural ester (filtered, basic Al2O3, 0.53% DBPC), a copper plate and moisture was studied. Research was especially focused on the impact of moisture on the aging of the above system. Samples with three different oil moisture levels (80, 143 and 305 ppm water content) were subjected to thermal aging to display the change in a selection of properties (tanδ, acid number, water content). For a study of the polarization effects, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was performed to observe the complex permittivity and conductivity dependencies on the temperature and frequency (±30 °C, 0.01-107 Hz). Havriliak-Negami (H-N) diagrams were used to further understand the results. The degradation products during thermal aging were recognized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Hydrolysis and hydrogenation occurred in the insulating system with a natural ester aged by elevated temperatures, which is in contrast to CO2 formation in the case of electric aging. The results showed an increase in the acid number, dissipation factor, and number of hydrolysis and hydrogenation products. Furthermore, changes in polarization were observed as a consequence of the thermal aging of paper-natural ester insulation system with the presence of copper and moisture.

© 2013 IEEE. With the rapid growth of scientific publications, it is hard for researchers to acquire appropriate papers that meet their expectations. Recommendation system for scientific articles is an essential technology to overcome this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel low-rank and sparse matrix factorization-based paper recommendation (LSMFPRec) method for authors. The proposed method seamlessly combines low-rank and sparse matrix factorization method with fine-grained paper and author affinity matrixes that are extracted from heterogeneous scientific network. Thus, it can effectively alleviate the sparsity and cold start problems that exist in traditional matrix factorization based collaborative filtering methods. Moreover, LSMFPRec can significantly reduce the error propagated from intermediate outputs. In addition, the proposed method essentially captures the low-rank and sparse characteristics that exist in scientific rating activities; therefore, it can generate more reasonable predicted ratings for influential and uninfluential papers. The effectiveness of the proposed LSMFPRec is demonstrated by the recommendation evaluation conducted on the AAN and CiteULike data sets.

Oil-paper insulation will inevitably endure impulse voltage with a superimposed dc voltage (superimposed voltage) because of introduced lightning or switching, which can induce charge accumulation and trigger flashover during the operation of a converter transformer. Temperature rise is also a nonnegligible factor that can significantly influence the performances of oil-paper insulation. This paper aims to reveal the effects of ambient temperature and superimposed voltage on surface charge and flashover behaviors in an oil-paper insulation system. Surface potential decay (SPD) experiments were performed under superimposed voltage with various polarity and amplitude combinations and at the temperature ranging from 20 °C to 80 °C. The results show that the initial surface potential and decay rate increase as the amplitude of the impulse voltage increases at 20 °C. The initial surface potential declines, and the process of SPD is accelerated at higher temperatures because of the increased concentration of shallow traps. Subsequently, flashover tests were conducted under superimposed voltage. It is found that flashover occurs after applying superimposed voltages even with a rather low dc voltage. In addition, the dc voltage component is primarily responsible for flashover. Weibull results also indicate that it is prone to trigger flashover at higher temperatures, because thermal excitation helps more carriers to escape from deep traps and participate in the process of flashover. Accordingly, the insulation characteristics of oil-paper system can be significantly influenced by superimposed voltage and temperature, which should draw great concern among the power grid.

With the rapid growth of scientific publications, research paper recommendation which suggests relevant research papers to users can bring great benefits to researchers. In this paper, we focus on the problem of recommending conference papers to the conference attendees. While most of the related existing methods depend on the content-based filtering, we propose a unified conference paper recommendation method named $CPRec$ , which exploits both the contents and the authorship information of the papers. In particular, besides the contents, we exploit the relationships between a user and the authors of a paper for recommendation. In our method, we extract several features for a user-paper pair from the citation network, the coauthor network, and the contents, respectively. In addition, we derive a user’s pairwise preference towards the conference papers from the user’s bookmarked papers in each conference. Furthermore, we employ a pairwise learning to rank model which exploits the pairwise user preference to learn a function that predicts a user’s preference towards a paper based on the extracted features. We conduct a recommendation performance evaluation using real-world data and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Methanol is regarded as an available indicator to analyze the aging condition of cellulose insulation. However, the diffusion mechanism of methanol molecules in the paper-oil insulation system is still unclear, since it cannot be explored by using only experiments. Given this issue, the molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the diffusion mechanism of methanol molecules. In the current work, the mean square displacement of methanol during the diffusion process was calculated and analyzed, as well as its trajectory tracking. Then, the research on interaction energies and hydrogen bonds in paper/oil system were conducted. Finally, the effect of temperature on the diffusion of methanol molecules was also studied. Findings revealed that the diffusion of methanol in cellulose insulation is faster than that in insulating oil, besides, the presence of hydrogen bonds affects the diffusion rate of methanol molecules in cellulose insulation and insulating oil. Thus, the present findings could support the investigation of the diffusion mechanisms of methanol molecules, by which the aging condition evaluation of cellulose insulation could be also promoted.

The reliability of power transformers operation largely depends on the insulation system condition, especially on the condition of paper insulation. Determining the condition of paper insulation of transformers in use cannot be made by direct measurements. The most common way of assessing the paper insulation condition is by analyzing the content of 2-furfural dissolved in the insulating oil and by applying correlations between the degree of paper polymerization and the 2-furfural content in the insulating oil. The concentration of 2-furfural in the oil depends on the moisture content of the insulation system and the oxygen and acid content in the oil. In order to gain a better insight into the cumulative content of 2-furfural produced by paper degradation, excluding changes in the 2-furfural content caused by migration between paper and oil at different operating temperatures, dependence of the degree of polymerization of kraft paper to 2-FAL content in the oil, corrected to a reference temperature of 20°C, for a moisture content in cellulose of 1-1.5% and 3-4% is presented in this paper. This diagram has been verified on 4 transformers according to available data from the database of the Electrical Engineering Institute Nikola Tesla. In the future, this diagram should be completed for moisture content of 2.5% in cellulose insulation.

Flexible In2O3 nanowire transistors gated by microporous SiO2-based solid electrolytes are fabricated on paper substrates at room temperature. Low-voltage (1.0 V) operation of these devices is realized owing to the large electric-double-layer capacitance of (1.73 μF/cm2 at 20 Hz) of the microporous SiO2 solid electrolytes, which were deposited at room temperature. The subthreshold swing, current on/off ratio, and field-effect mobility of the paper-based nanowire transistors are estimated to be 74 mV/decade, 1.7×106, and 218.3 cm2/V·s, respectively. These low-voltage paper-based nanowire transistors show promise for use in portable flexible paper electronics and low-cost portable sensors.

Over the decades, the immense growth has been reported in research publications due to continuous developments in science. To date, various approaches have been proposed that find similarity between research papers by applying different similarity measures collectively or individually based on the content of research papers. However, the contemporary schemes are not conceptualized enough to find related research papers in a coherent manner. This paper is aimed at finding related research papers by proposing a comprehensive and conceptualized model via building ontology named COReS: Content-based Ontology for Research Paper Similarity. The ontology is built by finding the explicit relationships (i.e., super-type sub-type, disjointedness, and overlapping) between state-of-the-art similarity techniques. This paper presents the applications of the COReS model in the form of a case study followed by an experiment. The case study uses InText citation-based and vector space-based similarity measures and relationships between these measures as defined in COReS. The experiment focuses on the computation of comprehensive similarity and other content-based similarity measures and rankings of research papers according to these measures. The obtained Spearman correlation coefficient results between ranks of research papers for different similarity measures and user study-based measure, justify the application of COReS for the computation of document similarity. The COReS is in the process of evaluation for ontological errors. In the future, COReS will be enriched to provide more knowledge to improve the process of comprehensive research paper similarity computation.

Metamaterial has become a hotspot in many research fields, including electromagnetism, thermodynamics and mechanics, as it can offers additional design freedom for material to obtain novel properties. Especially for the electromagnetic devices, various interesting electromagnetic properties which cannot be found in nature materials can be realized, such as negative refraction, invisible cloak, etc. Herein, we provide an overview of paper-based metamaterial for microwave application. This work reviews the metamaterial realized on paper substrate, including the fabrication techniques, application fields, as well as the outlook on future directions of the paper-based metamaterial for the readership.

Accurate modeling and simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables is an important support to optimize insulation system design and to evaluate the influence of voltage transients and steady-state conditions on accelerated ageing mechanisms and insulation reliability. Traditionally, field models considering time-independent permittivity and conductivity are used, but this approach neglects polarization mechanisms and charge trapping-detrapping phenomena. This article includes polarization dynamics in the field model and shows that its impact on transient electric field simulations in HVDC paper-insulated cables can be significant. A method is presented to infer the model parameters from experimental polarization and depolarization current measurements.

Papers with nanoscaled surface roughness and hydrophobically modification have been widely used in daily life. However, the relatively complex preparation process, high costs and harmful compounds have largely limited their applications. This research aims to fabricate superhydrophobic papers with low cost and nontoxic materials. The surface of cellulose fibers was initially coated with a film of SiO2 nanoparticles via sol-gel process. After papermaking and subsequent modification with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane through a simple solution-immersion process, the paper showed excellent superhydrophobic properties, with water contact angles (WCA) larger than 150&deg, Moreover, the prepared paper also showed superior mechanical durability against 10 times of deformation. The whole preparation process was carried out in a mild environment, with no intricate instruments or toxic chemicals, which has the potential of large-scale industrial production and application.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been investigated as a promising methodology to harvest mechanical energy into electricity. The matching impedance and the transient property of TENGs are important for their practical application. In this work, we proposed novel paper-based methodology for investigation of TENGs. First, we propose a novel method for triggering transience of pencil-on-paper (POP)-TENGs using household microwave oven and commercial graphite pencil. Moreover, a fast, simple and cost-effective approach for measuring the matching impedance of TENG based on paper variable resistor is proposed. Polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) nanoparticles with mass percentages of 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.2, 9.4 wt %, respectively, were constructed by molecular dynamics methods in this paper. Composite molecular models were established using PMSQ and MPIA (poly-metaphenylene isophthalamide) fiber. The influence of different PMSQ contents on the thermal stability of meta-aramid insulation paper was analyzed from the parameters of mechanical property, interaction energy, and mean square displacement. The results showed that the trend of mechanical properties decreased with the increase of PMSQ content. When the PMSQ content was 2.5 wt %, the mechanical properties of the composited model were the best, which was about 24% higher than that of the unmodified model. From an intermolecular bonding and nonbonding point of view, the energy parameters of composite model with the 2.5 wt % content was better than those of the composite model with other contents. Therefore, it is considered that MPIA can interact better with the 2.5 wt % content PMSQ composite model. When the PMSQ content is 2.5 wt %, the overall chain movement in the composite model is slower than that of the unmodified model, which can effectively inhibit the diffusion movement of the MPIA chain. In general, the thermal stability of composite molecular models MPIA and PMSQ (2.5 wt %) was better improved.

The abundant application of metallized paper and the quick growth of their wastes lead to the removal of a huge amount of valuable resources from economic cycle. In this work, for the first-time, the thermal micronizing technique has been used to directly transform the metallized paper wastes to Al-Si nano-rod and Al nano-particles for use as the input in different manufacturing sectors such as additive manufacturing or composite fabrication. Structure of metallized paper has been investigated using FT-IR analysis and first-principle plane-wave calculation. Then, based on the structure of metallized paper, thermal micronizing technique has been modified to directly transform this waste into nano materials. Structure of nano-particles and nano-rods has been investigated using SEM, TEM, and XPS analysis. Results showed two main Al-Si nano-rod and Al nano-particle morphologies created as a result of the different surface tensions, which facilitate their separation by Eddy current separation technique. These quick transformation and facile separation together make this technique a unique process to deal with this complex waste and producing value-added products which can re-capture these high value materials from waste and make the reforming economically viable.

We present a novel implementation of a Rock-Paper-Scissors (RPS) game interaction with a social robot. The framework is tailored to be computationally lightweight, as well as entertaining and visually appealing through collaboration with designers and animators. The fundamental gesture recognition pipeline employs a Leap motion device and two separate machine learning architectures to evaluate kinematic hand data on-the-fly. The first architecture is used to recognize and segment human motion activity in order to initialize the RPS play, and the second architecture is used to classify hand gestures into rock, paper or scissors. The employed tabletop robot interacts in the RPS play through unique animated gestural movements and vocalizations designed by animators which communicate the robot's choices as well as cognitive reflection on winning, losing and draw states. Performance of both learning architectures is carefully evaluated with respect to accuracy, reliability and run time performance under different feature and classifier types. Moreover, we assess our system during an interactive RPS play between robot and human. Experimental results show that the proposed system is robust to user variations and play style in real environment conditions. As such, it offers a powerful application for the subsequent exploration of social human-machine interaction.

Tight assembly of stator windings with no insulation paper damage is a manufacturing challenge. We evaluate different sets of parts according to the following parameters: magnet wire thickness, stator slot smoothness, length of the straight magnet wire after the slot end, and type and amount of insulation cap at the end of the slot. These parameters have discrete values with small differences between them. The damage criterion is the decrease of the insulation paper breakdown voltage after assembly/disassembly of parts, assembled in a small set of designed experiments. Parameter values, i.e., levels at individual experiments are set by an orthogonal experiment matrix. Repetition of each experiment provides statistical significance. Data analysis shows that the additive model alone is not sufficient due to the high correlation of the parameters’ influences. We extend the model to include interparameter influences, which we model by adding a virtual parameter. The extended additive model generates parameter values that do not degrade the insulation paper breakdown voltage within the manufacturing process. These values are verified by repetitions of the control experiment.

Copper-based friction material (CFM) and paper-based friction material (PFM) are the two most commonly used clutch friction materials. The friction and wear characteristics of these two kinds of friction materials under dry conditions were investigated by the pin-on-disc test over a broad range of applied loads, rotating speeds and ambient temperatures. Before experiments, the running-in test was conducted to stabilize the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear amount of the test samples. After experiments, the metallographic micrographs of the tested samples were presented to investigate the wear mechanisms. Experimental results showed that both the COF and wear depth of the CFM are much greater than these of PFM. The COF of CFM decreases with the increase of applied load, and changes slightly with the variation of rotating speed, whereas it increases first and then decreases with the increase of ambient temperature. However, the COF of PFM decreases dramatically with the increase of the rotating speed and ambient temperature, while it remains stable at first and then decreases slowly as the applied load increases. Additionally, under such three working conditions, the wear depth of CFM changes linearly, while the wear depth of PFM varies greatly. This study can be used as a guide for selecting friction materials for clutches with different applications.

This paper presents an investigation on the physio-mechanical properties and AC breakdown voltage of the Kenaf paper in the presence of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) for transformers application. Kenaf bast fibers were used in order to produce the paper through the soda pulping process. The pulps were subjected to beating up to 12,000 revolutions, whereby the PVA was added to the pulps at a different weight percentage concentration up to 12%. Morphological study was carried out on the Kenaf paper based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The apparent density, Tensile Index (TI), Burst Index (BI), Tear Index (TeI), and AC breakdown voltage of the Kenaf paper were measured. It is found that the TI and BI of Kenaf paper can be slightly improved through the introduction of PVA. On other hand, the TeI of the Kenaf paper decreases with the increment of the PVA. The AC breakdown voltage of the Kenaf paper slightly increases with the increment of PVA weight percentage concentration.

Integrating a dissolvable membrane into a sensor allows the control of sample flow, location and duration in critical areas. These time-barrier films stop the flow of samples until the membrane has dissolved, thus, for example, allowing increased exposure time between immunoreagents for the formation of greater numbers of immuno-complexes, ensuring higher sensitivity, reactivity, and helping to reduce false-positive signals. In this study, dissolvable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films are used in a 3D-printed sensor holder, which enables film integration without the use of glue. PVA is a synthetic hydrophilic linear polymer, its solubility is dependent on its molecular weight and degree of hydrolysis. Three types of PVAs films were tested herein: (1) PVA 1-Mw: 30–70 K, 87–90% hydrolyzed, (2) PVA 2-Mw: 31–50 K, 98–99% hydrolyzed and (3) PVA 3-Mw: 89–98 K, &gt, 99% hydrolyzed. The films were exposed to water in (1) the novel 3D-printed holder and (2) directly immersed into a water droplet. After comparing the time taken to dissolve PVA 1–3 films, PVA 1 films of 5–20% (w/v) are found to be most suitable as time barrier films, due to their optimal dissolution times and physical properties for integration into the customized 3D-printed holder.

For this study, a paper impregnated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was prepared. To prepare the substrates, aqueous suspensions of pulp fines, a side product from the paper production, were mixed with AgNP suspensions. The nanoparticle (NP) synthesis was then carried out via laser ablation of pure Ag in water. After the sheet formation process, the leaching of the AgNPs was determined to be low while the sheets exhibited antimicrobial activity toward Escherichia coli (E. coli).

In the pulp and paper industry, several studies have been done to improve and enhance the properties of the mechanical, optical, and antimicrobial activities of pulp produced with different additives. In the present study, pulp of wood branches (WBs) from Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. and Meryta sinclairii (Hook.f.) Seem. was treated with n-hexane oily extracts (HeOE) from Melia azedarach L. fruits, Magnolia grandiflora L. leaves, and Sinapis alba L. seeds as additives at concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5% based on oven-dry pulp weight. Measured mechanical properties were higher in paper sheets made from E. camaldulensis than M. sinclairii WB pulp. The highest tensile index values were observed with E. camaldulensis WB pulp treated with 5% HeOEs of S. alba (33.90 N&middot, m/g) and M. grandiflora (33.76 N&middot, m/g) compared to control (32.10 N&middot, m/g), the highest tear index with 5% HeOE of S. alba (4.11 mN&middot, m2/g) compared to control (3.32 mN&middot, m2/g), and the highest burst index with 5% HeOE of S. alba (4.11 kPa&middot, m2/g) compared to control (3.08 kPa&middot, m2/g). The highest double-fold number value (9) was observed with E. camaldulensis WB pulp treated with 5% HeOEs of S. alba, M. azedarach, and M. grandiflora but with no significant difference compared to control treatment (8.33) or other HeOE treatments with E. camaldulensis WB pulp. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination showed clear inhibition of the growth of Aspergillus terreus with WB pulp paper discs of E. camaldulensis and M. sinclairii treated with HeOEs of M. azedarach, S. alba, and M. grandiflora at 3% and 5% compared to control treatment, while HeOEs at 5% concentration showed no growth of A. niger and A. terreus. The present findings establish that the HeOEs from M. azedarach, S. alba, and M. grandiflora at 3% and 5% are novel natural products that can be used as alternatives to improve the properties and antifungal activity of WB pulp produced from E. camaldulensis and M. sinclairii.

Long-term immobilization ratios of strontium (Sr2+) and cesium (Cs+) in paper sludge ash-based geopolymer (PS-GP) were investigated in one year. PS-GP paste specimens were prepared in the conditions of 20 &deg, C and 100% R.H., using two kinds of paper sludge ash (PS-ash). Two kinds of alkaline solution were used in the PS-GP as activator. One was prepared by diluting aqueous Na-disilicate (water glass) with seawater. Another was a mixture of this solution and caustic soda of 10 M concentration. When seawater was mixed into the alkaline solution, unstable fixations of Sr2+ and Cs+ were greatly improved, resulting stable and high immobilization ratios at any age up to one year, no matter what kind of PS-ash and alkaline solution were used. Element maps obtained by EPMA exhibited nearly even distribution of Cs+. However Sr2+ was biased, making domains so firmly related to Ca2+ presence. The mechanism that seawater stabilizes immobilization of Sr2+ and Cs+ was discussed in this study, but still needs to further investigation. Chemical composition analyses of PS-GP were also conducted by SEM-EDS. Two categories of GP matrix were clearly observed, so called N-A-S-H and C-A-S-H gels, respectively. By plotting in ternary diagrams of SiO2-(CaO + Na2O)-Al2O3 and Al2O3-CaO-Na2O, compositional trends were discussed in view of &lsquo, plagioclase gels&rsquo, newly found in this study. As a result, it is suggested that the N-A-S-H and C-A-S-H gels should be strictly called Na-rich N-C-A-S-H and Ca-rich N-C-A-S-H gels, respectively.

The generation of a flexible printed circuit board on polymer fabrics has been a challenge over the last decade. In this work, a copper pattern was obtained on a soft substrate of filter paper/polyacrylonitrile (FP/PAN) film, where the filter paper was commercially available. The pattern of Ag particles was first produced on an Ag+-doped FP/PAN composite film, followed by electroless plating of copper using the metal silver particles as seeds. The in situ reduction of silver particles and the formation of the silver agglomeration pattern were induced by laser irradiation technology on the FP/PAN/AgNO3 composite film. A variety of characterizations indicated that the resultant copper deposition was uniform, with good conductivity properties.

This paper presents a sealed ageing study of palm oil (PO) and coconut oil (CO) in the presence of insulation paper. The type of PO under study is refined, bleached, and deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) olein. Three different variations of RBDPO and one sample of CO are aged at temperatures of 90 °C, 110 °C, and 130 °C. The properties of RBDPO and CO as well as paper under ageing are then analysed through dielectric and physicochemical measurements. It is found that the effect of ageing is not significant on the alternating current (AC) breakdown voltages and relative permittivities of RBDPO and CO. There is a slight increment trend of the resistivity for CO, while for all of the RBDPO, the resistivity slightly decreases as the ageing progresses. Only CO shows an apparent reduction of the dielectric dissipation factor. Throughout the ageing time, the acidities of all of the RBDPO and CO remain at low level, while the moisture in oils decreases. The tensile index (TI) of the papers for all of the RBDPO and CO retain more than 50% of the TI. A significant increment of the paper ageing rates of all of the RBDPO and CO is observed at an ageing temperature of 130 °C.

Most reported wearable electronic devices lack self-healing chemistry and flexible function to maintain stable energy output while irreversible damages and complex deformations. In this work, we report a dual-dynamic network electrolyte synthesized by micellar elastomers introduced into strong hydrogel matrix. The gel electrolyte is fabricated by physically cross-linking the borax-polyvinyl alcohol (B-PVA) network as tough matrix and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-poly (propylene oxide) (PPO)-poly (ethylene oxide) (Pluronic) to frame elastic network, followed by immersion in potassium chloride solution. Under the action of dynamic borate ester bond and multi-network hydrogen bond, the as-prepared electrolyte exhibits high stretchability (1535%) and good self-healing efficiency. Based on the electrolyte, we assemble the interfacial compatible micro-supercapacitor (MSC) by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) interdigital electrode printed on cellulosic paper by direct ink writing (DIW) technique. Thanks to the large specific area and compressive deformation resistance of cellulosic paper, the MSC with tightly interfacial contact achieves high volumetric capacitance of 801.9 mF cm−3 at the current density of 20 μA cm−2. In the absence of stimulation of the external environment, the self-healing MSC demonstrates an ideal capacity retention (90.43%) after five physical damaged/healing cycles. Our research provides a clean and effective strategy to construct wearable MSC.
