While arguing a strong defense of the humanities, this paper highlights its spirit and makes clear some misunderstandings and errors regarding the humanities. Nonetheless, a history of the humanities is left aside, here. Children and adolescents face increased mental health issues and social isolation, especially within the COVID-19 environment. In response to the current situation, the concept of social and emotional learning (SEL) has shown positive influences on children and adolescents. This paper will provide a brief definition and values of SEL. Then, the authors will suggest the concept of Humanities-Oriented Physical Education (HOPE) as a vehicle for SEL. Following this, under the umbrella of HOPE, this paper will introduce one specific pedagogical model that has the potential for creating successful learning environments for SEL within physical education settings. This paper introduces the Corpus of the Canon of Western Literature (Version 1.0), accompanied by a demonstration of its potential uses. The canon of western literature has been an important construct in the study of literature, long standing and long contested. It has been argued to represent many of the greatest works produced in the history of western literature. This corpus operationalizes the western canon based on Harold Bloom’s The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages (1994). The paper describes the development of the corpus, its organization and source material. Corpus procedures are applied to the corpus, such as word frequency analysis, lemmatization and keyness, to demonstrate its potential uses in culturomics and corpus stylistics, two interdisciplinary fields between the traditional and digital humanities, and the linguistic and literary approaches to literature. Culturomics is the study of culture and social psychology via the investigation of corpora of literature as cultural artefacts, while corpus stylistics is the application of corpus linguistics to traditional literary scholarship. This response paper explores the significance of Judit Bokser Liwerant, not just as an individual researcher and theorist, but as a highly collaborative intellectual who is able to bring together scholars from the social sciences, history, and the humanities. Literary and cultural critics would benefit from Liwerant’s guidance to move away from ingrained “methodological nationalism” and to take into account the increasingly transnational flow of creative people, cultural products, and ideas. The paper presents the analysis of cataloging and classification of the books from the legacy of Nina Glaser, the late professor of French literature at the University of Geneva, which was presented in 1998 to the Department of Romance Languages, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb. The donation is exceptionally rich and valuable and has had a significant influence on the Department's policy: in the past decade it has served as an inspiration for introducing several new courses, but has also encouraged interest for scholarly research in various fields of study. The paper presents a brief overview of the history of the Department of Romance Languages and its library, which, after moving into the new building in 2009, was partially restructured and divided into four independent collections. This study is focused primarily on the Francophone collections of the Library of the Department of Romance Languages, today the French Language and Literature Collection, into which the books from Nina Glaser's legacy were incorporated. The paper explains the importance of Glaser's donation for building the Francophone collection of the Faculty Library. It also gives a more general analysis of the significance of donated books in building library collections. The conclusion is that if a library has a well defined strategy for accepting donations, they are particularly useful in library collection development, and more than that, indispensable for acquiring new books in times when funds are rather modest. This paper extends the dialogue of educational philosophy to the experience of beginners entering the teaching profession. Rather than impose the ideas of any specific philosopher or theorist, or indeed official standard, the exploration presented here owes its origins to phenomenology and the use of grounded theory. Working from a narrative data base and focussing on the knowing of name in the first instance, the authors develop their emergent ideas on self and identity in relation to children taught, through connection to a wider literature that includes reference to Giddens, Illeris, Deleuze and Heidegger, for example. The paper is thus also an exercise in suggesting that research on practice by academics working in professional education, who are non-philosophers, can lead to constructive and relevant engagement with philosophy in developing theory from and about about practice, even though the approach, in the initial stages, may well be serendipitous and eclectic in nature. The author of this present paper tries to summarize the main theoretical views regarding equivalence. . The so-called "traditional" translation studies with a linguistic approach have described and categorized the main and subtypes of equivalence by an amazingly complex terminology. The variety of terminology is misleading sometimes as it may cover useless and empty categories. According to the research in the analysis of literary translation the most useful concept of equivalence belongs to Werner Koller, therefore the presentation of his categories represents the central part of this paper. At the same time it cannot be forgotten that the author himself points out the imperfections of these categories and sets the limits of the analysis of literary translation. This paper argues that field courses can improve college students' interest and engagement not only in the environmental sciences, but also in the environmental humanities--including environmental history, philosophy, and literature. We base this argument on five years of experience teaching an environmental studies field course through the Wildlands Studies Program in the Sierra Nevada of California, USA. In the paper we draw from field notes, discussions with students, correspondence with other instructors, and a survey sent to all of our former students. We conclude that three factors--the field immersion experience, the small group dynamic, and the curriculum design--all contributed to an increase in our students' interest and engagement in the environmental humanities. As an important task in Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT), New Event Detection (NED) aims to monitor the stream of news stories and detect new events reported by the first story of a topic. This paper proposes a Temporal Topic Model (TTM) to describe a topic as a series of events corresponding to different time. NED, based on TTM, firstly identifies whether a story includes the same time expressions with old topics, and then it verifies whether the story and the topics include relevant events corresponding to the expressions. Thus, a story will be determined as a new event, if it includes much few simultaneous relevant events of old topics. Additionally, this paper analyzes the distribution of time expressions to identify both seminal and novel events, by which NED modifies the probabilities of stories to be new events based on whether they include seminal or novel events of old topics. We compare our methods with some existing NED systems on TDT4 corpus, which demonstrate our methods substantially improve the efficiency and accuracy of NED. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reconsiders certain of Kierkegaard's criticisms of Hegel's theoretical philosophy in the light of recent interpretations of the latter. The paper seeks to show how these criticisms, far from being merely parochial or rhetorical, turn on central issues concerning the nature of thought and what it is to think. I begin by introducing Hegel's conception of “pure thought” as this is distinguished by his commitment to certain general requirements on a properly philosophical form of inquiry. I then outline Hegel's strategy for resolving a crucial problem he takes himself to face. For his account of the nature of thought depends upon the idea of a form of inquiry in which nothing whatsoever is presupposed; but this idea appears basically paradoxical inasmuch as the mere act of beginning to inquire in a certain way embodies an assumption about how it is appropriate to begin. Turning to Kierkegaard, I consider a key objection to the effect that Hegel's strategy for resolving this paradox depends on the incoherent idea of a purely reflexive act of thinking. In a previous paper in this journal, Unwin criticised the prior wine applications of price hedonic theory. This paper recapitulates and elaborates Unwin's critique drawing primarily on basic knowledge from the econometric literature and more recent price hedonic wine studies. Facing this critique, the empirical section of the paper provides an example of how a more realistic and stripped-down version of the price hedonic model could be applied in the wine context. This paper explores two different methods of reading 'Derrida's own conscience' -- that is, of raising the question of ethics and obligation in deconstruction. The two readings under discussion here are staged by Jean-Luc Nancy in his seminal essay 'The Free Voice of Man'. In the first half of the paper, I engage in a reading of Nancy's essay in which I seek not only to highlight Nancy's double formulation of the place of ethics in deconstruction, but also to re-mark the transition in Derrida's writings from the priority of the question to an emphasis on a call that precedes the question. In order to further explore this displacement of the priority of the question, the second half of the essay takes up an analysis of Derrida's employment of the motif of 'Viens' ('Come') in his essay 'On a Newly Arisen Apocalyptic Tone in Philosophy'. I suggest that 'Viens' should be read as Derrida's formulation of: (1) another response, beyond questioning, to a call that precedes any question; (2) another thought of conscience and obligation; and (3) a thought of the trace of alterity at the very heart of conscience that signals the impossibility of any form of good conscience. This paper discusses the rationale behind, and an approach to, the development of a graduate level interdisciplinary curriculum in literature and health care that incorporates community-based learning. Such an innovative approach emerges from the recognition that professional training in both health care and humanities programmes often does not model the kinds of collaborative relationships and professional values desired by contemporary health care students, providers and patients. Recent trends in literary study and the medical humanities are described, along with the function (and benefits to students) of interdisciplinary classrooms and the role of community-based learning in higher education. The authors discuss their experiences teaching, and offer students' responses to medical humanities courses from which the concept for such a curriculum evolved. The paper offers advice on developing, evaluating and disseminating such a model curriculum for medical, nursing and graduate literature students. Proposal By linking health care with graduate English literature students, such a course would promote dialogue and understanding among health professionals, enhance student awareness of the effects of illness on patients, their caregivers and families, and encourage student activism and community service. A common set of literary works would provide a shared vocabulary and opportunities for ethical, critical and personal response. Working together in a community-based project, students from diifferent programmes would learn to appreciate alternative professional and lay perspectives on common experiences. Traditional discourses upon literature have been predicated upon the ability to refer to a text that others may consult (Landow, 1994, p. 33). Texts that involve elements of feedback and non-trivial decision-making on the part of the reader (Aarseth, 1997, p. 1) therefore present a challenge to readers and critics alike. Since a persuasive case has been made against a critical method that sets out to ``identify the task of interpretation as a task of territorial exploration and territorial mastery'' (Aarseth, p. 87), this paper proposes the use of readers in an empirically based approach to hypertext fiction. Meta-interpretation, a method that combines individual responses to a text, reading logs, screen recordings and limited qualitative/quantitative analysis, and critical interpretation is outlined. By analysing readers' responses it is possible to suggest both the ways that textual elements may have influenced or determined readers' choices and the ways that readers' choices ``configure'' the text. The method thus addresses Espen Aarseth's concerns and illuminates interesting features of interactive processes in fictional environments. The paper is divided into two parts: the first part sketches out meta-interpretation through consideration of the main problems confronting the literary critic; the second part describes reading research aimed at generating data for the literary critic. In this paper, we consider the conditionally faulty graphs G that each vertex of G is incident with at least m fault-free edges, 2 ≤ m ≤ n - 1. We extend the limitation m ≥ 2 in all previous results of edge-bipancyclicity with faulty edges and faulty vertices. Let fe (respectively, fv) denotes the number of faulty edges (respectively, faulty vertices) in an n-dimensional hypercube Qn. For all m, we show that every fault-free edge of Qn lies on a fault-free cycle of every even length from 4 to |V| - 2fv inclusive provided fe + fv ≤ n - 2. This discussion paper reviews and critiques literature related to the evolution of the medical humanities as an academic discipline and its contribution to healthcare provision. We argue that despite considerable advances in the field of medical humanities, needs have been identified for a more inclusive, outward-facing and applied discipline. These needs can be met in the form of what we have called the health humanities, which both embrace interdisciplinarity and engage with the contributions of those marginalised from the medical humanities - for example, allied health professionals, nurses, patients and carers. The article analyzes the use of time-bound in timeless narrative genre, the fairy tale. Through an extended reading of the Sleeping Beauty myth, the paper elucidates how the return to an old story allows an author, a culture, a reader, to meditate upon temporal boundaries and anxieties about progress. It notes that Beauty's suspension in a sleep that precludes her capacity to act and to create describes mid-Victorian cultural anxieties about stasis and determination.

Relaxed controls are widely used to analyze the existence of optimal controls in the literature. Though there are many optimal control problems admitting no optimal control, rare examples were shown. Various efforts have been made during the last one hundred years or so to edit the poetry of Diego de Silva y Mendoza, Count of Salinas and Marquis of Alenquer (to give him his poetic titles), but all have come to naught due, principally, to the sheer complexity and size of the task that awaits the would-be editor. Buceta, Rosales and Glaser all expressed a desire to edit properly the poetry of one of the most lyrical voices of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Spain, but each in the end failed to do so. The principal complexity is the simple fact that there is no printed edition of Salinas's work nor an autograph manuscript to fall back on: his poetry is to be found in dozens of anonymous manuscripts all over Spain, Portugal. the USA, and most major libraries in Europe. In this paper I make the first attempt to introduce some clarity and logic into the editing of Salinas's poetry, by showing how a canon of his work can be created out of the morass of manuscript versions, and from there how an edition of his poetry that is reasonably correct and close to the author's originals can be achieved. Abstract: This paper is the product of the wave modelling community and it tries to make a picture of the present situation in this branch of science, exploring the previous and the most recent results and looking ahead towards the solution of the problems we presently face. Both theory and applications are considered. The many faces of the subject imply separate discussions. This is reflected into the single sections, seven of them, each dealing with a specific topic, the whole providing a broad and solid overview of the present state of the art. The study presents a stylistic analysis of the language of the first extant original play published by a woman in English, Elizabeth Cary's The Tragedy of Mariam, The Faire Queene of Jewry. Through the application of computational stylistics, the paper seeks to explain the degree to which the linguistic features identified as being peculiar to Mariam might be more generally ascribed to closet drama as opposed to drama written for the public stage. The author argues that a linguistic analysis highlights the extent of Gary's engagement with contemporary intellectual, political, and social debate and suggests a way of repositioning the text within the divergent male-authored traditions with which it connects. Representation, both as a normative concept and a political process, has generated a rich literature across several national contexts. To develop our understanding of representational systems, scholars tend to assess the degree of policy congruence between parliamentarians and constituents as well as the role orientations adopted by elected parliamentarians and legislators. This paper contends that in order to have a complete understanding of representational systems, we must consider not only the representational roles adopted by parliamentarians, but also the publics’ preferences regarding parliamentary representation. Specifically, I posit that individuals have attitudes about the type and degree of relationship that they believe should exist between elected parliamentarians, parties and constituents. Using data from a 2003 survey of the British public, I test the related hypotheses that individuals have meaningful and predictable preferences for the representational relationship they share with their members of parliament (MPs) and that these representational preferences in turn influence how individuals evaluate MPs. Finding support for both hypotheses, I argue that developing an understanding of normative public preferences for political representation is an important and overlooked component in advancing models of public support of both elected officials and governing institutions. This paper responds to criticism of the Kripkean account of logical truth in first-order modal logic. The criticism, largely ignored in the literature, claims that when the box and diamond are interpreted as the logical modality operators, the Kripkean account is extensionally incorrect because it fails to reflect the fact that all sentences stating truths about what is logically possible are themselves logically necessary. This paper will attempt to specify a literary genre of farm narrative, canonically exemplified by Schreiner, Lessing and Coetzee, in order to raise the question of what alternative narratives there may be. Narratives of entrapment or regression will be juxtaposed with artistic and autobiographical expositions offering a pioneering myth and logic, served to open up overlooked questions of autonomy and local community. Particular attention will be given to one illustration (author will supply illustration), literally a watercolour painting that can be seen to undo certain expectations of the farm setting established by the dominant literary tradition. A feature of contemporary South African fiction is that it explores the intricate complicities of personal, cultural and racial identities in terms of an uneasy relation to place—in both a physical and a figurative sense. Mpe's Welcome To Our Hillbrow poses a radical challenge to notions of ‘community’, of what constitutes ‘home’ in the same instant that the narrative is generated by these notions. The novel is written in the second person, which has the disorientating effect of simultaneously distancing, but engaging the reader in the implied community signalled by the ‘our’ of the novel's title. Jacobson maintains that, as a child growing up in Kimberley, he had invested with fantasy the landscape of the historical route from the Cape Colony to the African interior, one that is said to have registered an unconscious anxiety that there might, in fact, ‘be nothing there’. On his return as adult to this landscape, he wonders whether or not he will discover a void in the heart of the imagined plenitude. In this paper, I explore the relationship between the putative landscape of history and the landscape of fantasy, arguing that, by problematising the boundary between them, Jacobson's account of his journey along the ‘missionary road’ creates productive ambiguities. In this paper I aim to use Douanier Rousseau's La Bohémienne (1897) as the starting point for an exploration of how personal memory intersects with cultural history, in terms of the relations between the present and the past, and the individual and the community, as complexly determined by separation, distance and exile. Literary and cultural criticism in recent years has been steadily drawn towards an exploration of boundaries, which has allowed an expansion of ‘connections’ across literatures, without however always taking into account the implications of that expansion. I want to seek out some of the implications of ‘reading’ a remembered image from the colonial past in the present, while thinking about what constitutes ‘home’ for former colonials like myself, hovering between detachment and complicity, yet provoked by the amorality and amnesia of postmodernist criticism. This paper focuses on scoping studies, an approach to reviewing the literature which to date has received little attention in the research methods literature. We distinguish between different types of scoping studies and indicate where these stand in relation to full systematic reviews. We outline a framework for conducting a scoping study based on our recent experiences of reviewing the literature on services for carers for people with mental health problems. Where appropriate, our approach to scoping the field is contrasted with the procedures followed in systematic reviews. We emphasize how including a consultation exercise in this sort of study may enhance the results, making them more useful to policy makers, practitioners and service users. Finally, we consider the advantages and limitations of the approach and suggest that a wider debate is called for about the role of the scoping study in relation to other types of literature reviews. This paper explores the symbolism of wine in medieval Persian poetry, focusing particularly on the works of Hafiz. It provides a brief overview of the archaeological and historical evidence pertaining to wine in Persia. This is followed by an account of medieval court poetry in Persia, before attention focuses explicitly on the work of Hafiz. This highlights the symbolism of wine particularly through an interpretation of Hafiz's ethical system, which is seen as being closely derived from 8th century Malamati philosophy. This paper addresses a decade of human factor research, specifically the pioneering work of Adjibolosoo and the literature that his work has engendered. We argue that the framework that drives that passion requires some critical retooling if it is to provide the analytical sophistication for dealing with the complexities that characterize the development process. We also make the case that the framework puts forward several concepts that tend to be undertheorized, and their linkage to development assumed rather than critically demonstrated. A corollary to this is the fact that it is methodologically weak in that it fails to provide valid measures for the concepts that are supposed to be the basis for judging the success of human factor engineering efforts, and hence socio-economic development. The paper describes our recent developments in automatic extraction of translation equivalents from parallel corpora. We describe three increasingly complex algorithms: a simple baseline iterative method, and two non-iterative more elaborated versions. While the baseline algorithm is mainly described for illustrative purposes, the non-iterative algorithms outline the use of different working hypotheses which may be motivated by different kinds of applications and to some extent by the languages concerned. The first two algorithms rely on cross-lingual POS preservation, while with the third one POS invariance is not an extraction condition. This paper juxtaposes "histories" of zero in mathematics and literature. Without zero's introduction into Europe in the Renaissance, the modern world of calculus, set theory, international finance, "smart bombs" and digital globalization would have been impossible. The origin of zero, however, fades off into an uncertain past. Was zero invented or discovered by Babylonians, or Chaldeans, or Indians, or Greeks, or Spanish Arabs, or Mayans, or by all of these at different times and paces? Scholars disagree. They agree, however, that zero, which is both a number and not a number, causes intractable problems for logic, for mathematics, and for set theory. Zero has been present in modernist literature too, some- times as a theme, as in Borges or Svevo; sometimes, as in Shakespeare, Joyce, James, and George Eliot, in a way more integral to rhetorical form: that is, as a figure for the allegorical features of literary language. Two Sumerian mythological compositions share the motif of a god fighting a mountain. This paper will show that while the two accounts of the sumerian mythological composition differ significantly in many ways, they parallel one another closely with regard to how they portray the divine protagonists, the essential character of the antagonists, and their actions. Both stories involve a god fighting a mountain or a mountain-symbolizing stone, and both show close similarities in the phraseology used to describe the protagonists, the antagonists, and some of their actions.

In this article, the author will argues that much of this literature is based upon a mistake. The philosophy of language generally has no jurisprudential consequences. The fact that so many philosophers of law have thought otherwise has seriously hampered progress in the field, and not just because time, effort, and paper have been wasted. The philosophy of language appears to have jurisprudential consequences because of a mistake, which the author calls "Dworkin's fallacy" in honor of the most famous philosopher of law to have succumbed to it. This article will analyze the fallacy and describes its negative effects.

In 1979 the author spent the summer at a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar at Princeton with Richard Rorty, an experience which had numerous consequences, including a very Rortyan paper subsequently published in Human Studies called "Social theory," without wholes. Over this summer he has also worked on a manuscript that grew out a long article published in Human Studies on Max Weber and the fact-value distinction entitled "The limits of reason and some limitations of Weber's morality." The research that he was doing in the Princeton library was primarily concerned with filling in the context in which Weber had made his famous statements about fact and value, and also with examining the sequel of those writings in subsequent philosophy. This topic represents an important and distinctive strand in the tradition of continental philosophy, something that has now increasingly come to be recognized.

This article explores alternative narrations of the political and the cosmopolitical. It focuses on two animal images: the horse and the dog. Animal images have been commonly used in political literature, leading to such acclaimed masterpieces as Pancatantra, Attar's Conference of the Birds, and more recently Orwell's Animal Farm. This article, however, looks beyond the instrumental usage of animal images and examines the theoretical potential their symbolic exchange establishes and the popular imaginative charge it installs in (cosmo)political discourse. It is concerned with what these narratives and their investigation enable in terms of political practice, and what their exclusion and marginalisation disables. For example, the enabling of political analysis that looks beyond the science of government and order and into the everyday impact of mythic and psychic states; or the framing of the cosmopolitan debate essentially around a Western human rights discourse that excludes animal life, or ecological and theosophic knowledge. Moving from the horse-rule exemplifications of ancient Greek mythography to the politicisation of the dog image in the cynic way of life, the paper finally turns to a mythic depiction of cosmopolis as the guiding of the chariot of Zeus, which involves the task of mediating the world through spiritual or cosmic politics. The role of the listener in processes of language planning and production is assessed controversially in the literature. In this paper it is argued that differences observed in the degree of partner adaptivity are related to differences in task complexity. Earlier studies in this field focused on the production of single referential acts. In order to test hearer-orientedness under conditions in which speakers have rather to develop and follow a complex macrostructural plan, an experiment was carried out in which speakers had to instruct a hearer to set up a villagelike configuration of 13 objects. Three aspects of text structure were analyzed as indicators for the degree of partner adaptivity: anchoring of spatial perspective, given-new structure, level of granularity. The results reflect the fact that texts are structured on the basis of two very elementary components: topic elements (including perspective anchoring, choice of linearization criterion) and focus elements. Global choices made with respect to topic elements are fairly resistant to modification (e.g. perspective reanchoring required by the hearer) whereas changes in the focus domain are unproblematic for the speaker (e.g. hearer intervention asking for a change in the level of specificity,). In conclusion, we relate these findings to a global model of language production, arguing for different types of partner-orientedness at different levels of the planning process. This paper surveys the use of the computer in the humanities and fine arts, and indicates the relevance of available hardware and software for those applications areas. The first section covers (a) pattern recognition and analysis in art, architecture, music, and literature (with an emphasis upon the latter), and (b) pattern construction, or synthesis, in art, architecture, music, and language. In the second section, data representation and manipulation are described with reference to: first, transformation of the artifact into a form suitable for the computer; second, internal data storage and manipulation; and, third, output. The three types of artifacts dealt with are: aural, or auditory; visual, including both nonalphameric and alphameric forms; tactile. A discussion of data structures and of data manipulation occupies the subsection on internal data storage and manipulation, and the brief commentary on output concentrates on aural and visual modes.
