Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a serious threat to first-time pregnancy. Objective: To determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among pregnant women on antenatal appointment in government approved healthcare facilities in Nigeria and also to establish the significant correlation and association within sociodemographic variables. Methods: It was a facility-based cross-sectional study, conducted in government-approved healthcare facilities in Nigeria, from January to March, 2023. A total of 1750 pregnant women were sampled and surveyed using convenient sampling technique. Data were collected using an adapted questionnaire "Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Questionnaire" with 0.87 reliability index. Statistical analysis was completed using IBM SPSS version 22. Frequency, percentage, odds ratio statistics, and chi-square test were applied for data analysis. All computations were deemed statistically significant at p value ≤ 0.05. Results: Out of 1750 eligible participants, 1488 (88.4%) valid responses were analyzed. The study showed that 69% knew about GDM, 65% had positive attitude, and 79% had desirable GDM practice. Statistically, there were strong correlation between KAP regarding GDM and age, marital status, education level, and parity status (odds ratio ≥ 1). Furthermore, the KAP regarding GDM was significantly associated with alcohol consumption, education, parity status, and resident (p value < 0.05), respectively. Conclusion: Approximately three-quarter of the pregnant women knew about GDM, had positive attitude, and had desirable GDM practice. The KAP regarding GDM was strongly correlated and significantly associated with sociodemographic variables. Facility-based interventions on KAP regarding GDM are paramount to be incorporated in the national health programs to improve knowledge and enhance attitude and GDM practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies conducted early in the COVID-19 pandemic - before vaccines were widely available - indicated that drug use may have declined among sexual minority men (SMM). This study evaluated drug use trends in the second year of the pandemic. Cross-sectional responses from cisgender SMM living in the US and recruited online (n = 15,897) were grouped for analyses: Time 1: 3/1/2021-5/30/2021; Time 2: 6/1/2021-8/31/2021; Time 3: 9/1/2021-11/30/2021; and Time 4: 12/1 2021-2/28/2022. Results of multivariable models indicated that illicit drug use (excluding cannabis) increased at Times 2 (OR = 1.249, p <.001), 3 (OR = 1.668, p <.001), and 4 (OR = 1.674, p <.001) compared to Time 1. In contrast, cannabis use was relatively stable over time. Rates did not differ significantly among Times 1, 2, and 4. While rates of COVID-19 vaccination increased over time, illicit drug use was negatively associated with the odds of vaccination (OR = 0.361, p <.001). These findings highlight the need for ongoing attention to the risks drug use poses among SMM. Illicit drug use - a long-standing health disparity among SMM - increased significantly across the second year of the pandemic. Community parents as caregivers of preschoolers are a crucial factor in promoting general and oral health habits. The objective of this study was to determine the oral health knowledge of community parents working as caregivers in family welfare homes and explore their relationship with the oral health of preschoolers under their care. A non-experimental (cross-sectional) study was conducted, which analyzed the 2009–2012 Valle del Cauca's oral health database. This database contains a survey of 250 community mothers from 40 municipalities who cared for 7221 preschoolers. A total of 982 clinical records of preschoolers were analyzed. The average age of the mothers was 41.4 years (± 10); 18% had university training. The average age of preschoolers who had been clinically evaluated was 3.5 (± 0.6); 52% were affiliated to the contributory and special Colombian social security regime, and 36.6% were poor populations affiliated to the subsidized regime. Assessment of the oral-health-related knowledge of caregivers revealed that 22.8% had good oral health knowledge. 18.4% reported consumption patterns related to a high-risk cariogenic diet. The prevalence of decay in preschoolers was 45.6%. This study found that children had better oral health conditions in community homes where caregivers presented better oral health knowledge. This reinforces the hypothesis that the greater the knowledge from caregivers on the topic, the lower the prevalence of pathologies such as caries and gingivitis in preschoolers under their care. OBJECTIVE: Spices, because of their bioactive content, can cause irritation and allergic symptoms in the respiratory system and skin. Spice shop workers are constantly exposed to spices and dried herbs as part of their jobs. This study aimed to investigate the work-related symptoms of spice shop workers. Another aim was to assess the risk status of having an atopic nature for work-related symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Our research team visited the spice shops and a questionnaire was administered to 112 workers to assess work-related symptoms. In order to determine atopy, 79 of them had skin prick tests with common aeroallergens. RESULTS: Workers had eye complaints (19.6%), runny noses (22.3%), skin symptoms (9.8%), shortness of breath (9.8%), and coughs (19.6%) at work. The prevalence of atopy was 18%. Atopy was associated with work-related eye complaints (odds ratio (OR): 4.12, 95% CI: 1.17-14.46), work-related runny nose, and work-related cough (OR: 4.85, 95% CI: 1.44-16.32, and OR: 4.41, 95% CI: 1.30-14.97). CONCLUSIONS: The workers in spice shops are adversely affected by spices and dried herbs in their working environment. Being sensitive to common aeroallergens poses a risk for occupational symptoms. Background and purpose: Evidence regarding whether reducing sedentary behavior and increasing physical activity levels to prevent stroke recurrence is insufficient. Therefore, this study preliminarily investigated whether post‐discharge sedentary behavior and physical activity levels in patients with minor ischemic stroke were associated with stroke recurrence. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 73 patients (aged 72.0 years) with minor ischemic stroke from a previous study. The outcome was recurrent stroke 2 years after stroke onset, assessed using medical records. Exposure factors including sedentary behavior and physical activity levels 6 months post‐discharge were measured using accelerometers; patients were classified into the recurrence or non‐recurrence groups. Logistic regression analyses were then conducted to determine whether sedentary behavior and physical activity 6 months after discharge were associated with stroke recurrence. Results: Six patients experienced stroke recurrence (recurrence rate, 8.2%). The recurrence group showed greater sedentary behavior (recurrence group 68.0%, non‐recurrence group 52.0%, p = 0.007) and less light‐intensity physical activity (LPA) (recurrence group 21.0%, non‐recurrence group 37.0%, p = 0.002) than in the non‐recurrence group. Logistic regression analysis showed that sedentary behavior (odds ratio = 1.083, 95% confidence interval = 1.007–1.165, p = 0.032) and LPA (odds ratio = 0.874, 95% confidence interval = 0.785–0.975, p = 0.015) were independent factors for recurrence of stroke. Discussion: Post‐discharge sedentary behavior and LPA in patients with minor ischemic stroke were associated with stroke recurrence. Results suggest that reducing post‐discharge sedentary behavior and increasing LPA may be crucial for reducing the risk of stroke recurrence in patients with minor ischemic stroke. Aim: This retrospective cohort study investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and Activities of Daily Living capacity after discharge from convalescent rehabilitation wards. Methods: We included consecutive patients discharged from three convalescent rehabilitation wards in a hospital in Japan between December 2018 and October 2020. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the criteria of the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia, utilizing skeletal muscle mass index and handgrip strength. Statistical analyses were carried out separately for men and women. The primary outcome was a higher motor domain (motor Functional Independence Measure [mFIM]) and a higher cognitive domain (cognitive Functional Independence Measure [cFIM]) of the FIM score 1 month after discharge. The secondary outcomes were higher mFIM and cFIM scores 6 months after discharge, analyzed using binary logistic regression. Results: Among 305 participants (mean age 70.0 years, 148 men), 93 were identified as having sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 16% for outpatient rehabilitation services, 59% for home‐visit rehabilitation services and 50% for older adult day care. Logistic regression analyses showed that sarcopenia at discharge was not an independent variable for mFIM at 1 month (odds ratio [OR] 20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.31–1300 for men, OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.11–2.4 for women) and cFIM (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.10–3.8 for men, OR 5.3, 95% CI 0.81–34 for women). At 6 months, sarcopenia at discharge was not an independent variable for mFIM (OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.02–3.6 for men, OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.06–2.5 for women) and cFIM (OR 0.16, 95% CI 0.01–2.4 for men, OR 0.00, 95% CI 0.00–1.1 for women). Aim: This cohort study aimed to explore the connection between postoperative hyperactive delirium and major complications in elderly patients undergoing emergency hip fracture surgery. Methods: Elderly patients aged 65 years and older undergoing emergency hip fracture surgery were included in the study. The presence of postoperative hyperactive delirium was assessed, and logistic regression analysis, following propensity score matching, was conducted to investigate the association between postoperative hyperactive delirium and major complications occurring 30 and 90 days post‐surgery. The analysis controlled for potential confounding factors. Results: After propensity score matching, the analysis included 13 590 patients, equally distributed with 6795 in each group. The group experiencing postoperative hyperactive delirium exhibited a significantly elevated risk of 30‐day postoperative complications, including acute renal failure, pneumonia, septicemia, and stroke, with adjusted odds ratios ranging from 1.64 to 2.39. Furthermore, this group displayed notably higher rates of 90‐day postoperative complications, encompassing mortality, acute renal failure, pneumonia, septicemia, and stroke, with a significantly increased incidence of mortality within 90 days. Conclusion: Postoperative hyperactive delirium in elderly patients undergoing emergency hip fracture surgery is significantly linked to an increased risk of major complications at both 30 and 90 days post‐surgery. This study aimed to explore whether differences exist in anesthesia care providers' use of intraoperative medication between African American and non-Hispanic White patients in adult surgical patients who underwent noncardiothoracic nonobstetric surgeries with general anesthesia. A retrospective observational cohort study used electronic health records between January 1, 2018 and August 31, 2019 at a large academic health system in the southeastern United States. To evaluate the isolated impact of race on intraoperative medication use, inverse probability of treatment weighting using the propensity scores was used to balance the covariates between African American and non-Hispanic White patients. Regression analyses were then performed to evaluate the impact of race on the total dose of opioid analgesia administered, and the use of midazolam, sugammadex, antihypotensive drugs, and antihypertensive drugs. Of the 31,790 patients included in the sample, 58.9% were non-Hispanic Whites and 13.6% were African American patients. After adjusting for significant covariates, African American patients were more likely to receive midazolam premedication (p <.0001; adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.17, 99.9% CI [1.06, 1.30]), and antihypertensive drugs (p =.0002; aOR = 1.15, 99.9% CI [1.02, 1.30]), and less likely to receive antihypotensive drugs (p <.0001; aOR = 0.85, 99.9% CI [0.76, 0.95]) than non-Hispanic White patients. However, we did not find significant differences in the total dose of opioid analgesia administered, or sugammadex. This study identified differences in intraoperative anesthesia care delivery between African American and non-Hispanic White patients; however, future research is needed to understand mechanisms that contribute to these differences and whether these differences are associated with patient outcomes. Objectives: During the coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) pandemic, patients with altered mental status (AMS: dementia, delirium and delirium superimposed on dementia) were profoundly affected by an abrupt transformation in healthcare systems. Here, we evaluated quality‐care outcomes, including length of stay (LOS), in‐hospital mortality, early readmission and mortality after hospital discharge, in older adults admitted for AMS during the pandemic and compared them to patients admitted prior to the pandemic. Methods: Chi‐squared and Fisher's exact tests were used to examine changes to admissions for AMS before and during the pandemic, and their outcomes. Logistic regression analyses, with reference to pre‐pandemic data, were conducted to examine the impact of the pandemic on outcomes. Design: Prospective data of 21,192 non‐COVID admissions to an acute general medical department in a Surrey (UK) hospital were collected from patients admitted before (1st April 2019 to 29th February 2020) and during the pandemic (1st March 2020 to 31st March 2021). Results: There were 10,173 (47.7% men) from the pre‐pandemic and 11,019 (47.5% men) from the pandemic periods; overall mean age = 68.3yr. During the pandemic AMS patients had significantly higher admission rates (1.1% vs 0.6%, P < 0.001). However, median LOS in hospital was shorter (9.0 days [IQR = 5.3–16.2] vs 15.5 days [IQR = 6.2–25.7], P < 0.001) and thus were less likely to stay in hospital >3 weeks: adjusted OR = 0.26 (95%CI = 0.12–0.57). In‐hospital mortality and readmission within 28 days of discharge did not change during the pandemic, but were less likely to die within 30 days of discharge: adjusted OR = 0.32 (95%CI = 0.11–0.96). Conclusions: This combination of higher admission rate, shorter LOS, and an unchanging early readmission suggests a higher admission‐discharge turnover of different patients with AMS and provides important insights into the potential impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on healthcare delivery to individuals with AMS. Background: Abdominal surgery is considered a high-risk procedure for the development of surgical site infection (SSI). Few studies have evaluated the relative importance of surgical site infection risk factors in terms of consistency in abdominal surgery. Therefore, this comprehensive review article mapped and summarized the evidence aimed to determine the relative importance of the risk factors and incidence of SSIs in abdominal surgery. Methods: A literature review was conducted using electronic databases and search engines such as Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science up to March 16, 2023. There was no language restriction for the papers to be included in the study. The relative consistency of the risk factors was measured and evaluated using the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Original peer-reviewed cohort and case-control studies were included if all types of SSIs were included. Meta-analysis was performed to determine the pooled estimates of SSI incidences. Results: Of 14,237 identified records, 107 articles were included in the review. The pooled incidence of SSI was 10.6% (95% CI: 9.02-12.55%, χ²=12986.44, P<0.001). Operative time and higher wound class were both significant consistent risk factors for SSI incidence. Patients' educational status, malnutrition, functional status, and history of neurological/psychiatric disorders were all candidates for consistent risk factors, with insufficient evidence. Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicated that SSI in abdominal surgery was a multifactorial phenomenon with a considerable risk and had different risk factors with various relative importance. Determining the relative importance of the risk factors for the prevention and control of SSI is strongly recommended. Introduction: Hundreds of children suffer burn injuries each day, yet care guidelines regarding the need for acute inpatient treatment vs outpatient follow-up vs no required follow-up remain nebulous. This gap in the literature is particularly salient for the emergency clinician, who must be able to rapidly determine appropriate disposition. Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients presenting to a Level II pediatric trauma center, January 1, 2017-December 31, 2019, and discharged with an International Classification of Diseases, Rev 10, burn diagnosis. We obtained and analyzed demographics, burn characteristics, and follow-up data using univariate and bivariate analysis as well as logistic regression modeling. Patients were stratified into three outcome groups: group 1-patients who underwent emergent evaluation at a burn center or were admitted at their first follow-up appointment; group 2-patients who followed up at a burn center (as an outpatient) or at the emergency department (and were discharged home); and group 3-patients with no known follow-up. Results: A total of 572 patients were included in this study; 58.9% of patients were 1-5 years of age. Sixty-five patients met group 1 criteria, 189 patients met group 2 criteria, and 318 patients met group 3 criteria. Sixty-five percent of patients met at least one American Burn Association criteria, and 79% of all burns were second-degree burns. Flame and scald burns were associated with increased odds (odds ratio [OR] 1.21, OR 1.12) of group 1 vs group 2 + group 3 (P = 0.02, P < 0.001). Second/third-degree burns and concern for non-accidental trauma were also associated with increased odds of group 1 vs 2 or 3 (OR = 1.11, 1.35, P ≤ 0.001, 0.001, respectively). Scald burns were associated with increased odds of group 2 compared to group 3 (OR 1.11, P = 0.04). Second/third degree burns were also associated with increased odds of group 2 vs 3 (OR 1.19, P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: There were few statistically significant variables strongly associated with group 1 (emergent treatment/admission) vs group 2 (follow-up/outpatient treatment) vs group 3 (no follow- up). However, one notable finding in this study was the association of scald burns with treatment (admission or follow-up) suggesting that the presence of a scald burn in a child may signify to clinicians that a burn center consult is warranted. Background: During cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) is primarily determined by pulmonary blood flow, thereby reflecting the blood flow generated by CPR. We aimed to develop an EtCO2 trajectory-based prediction model for prognostication at specific time points during CPR in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Methods: We screened patients receiving CPR between 2015-2021 from a prospectively collected database of a tertiary-care medical center. The primary outcome was survival to hospital discharge. We used group-based trajectory modeling to identify the EtCO2 trajectories. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used for model development and internally validated using bootstrapping. We assessed performance of the model using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: The primary analysis included 542 patients with a median age of 68.0 years. Three distinct EtCO2 trajectories were identified in patients resuscitated for 20 minutes (min): low (average EtCO2 10.0 millimeters of mercury [mm Hg]; intermediate (average EtCO2 26.5 mm Hg); and high (average EtCO2: 51.5 mm Hg). Twenty-min EtCO2 trajectory was fitted as an ordinal variable (low, intermediate, and high) and positively associated with survival (odds ratio 2.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07-4.74). When the 20-min EtCO2 trajectory was combined with other variables, including arrest location and arrest rhythms, the AUC of the 20-min prediction model for survival was 0.89 (95% CI 0.86-0.92). All predictors in the 20-min model remained statistically significant after bootstrapping. Conclusion: Time-specific EtCO2 trajectory was a significant predictor of OHCA outcomes, which could be combined with other baseline variables for intra-arrest prognostication. Objective: The aim of the study is to assess the relationship between walking exercise and medial joint space narrowing progression, symptoms, and knee extensor muscle strength in early knee osteoarthritis patients. Methods: This nested cohort study within the Osteoarthritis Initiative included participants aged 50 yrs and older with knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grades 0–2). Walking exercisers were identified using a modified Historical Physical Activity Survey Instrument. Differences in medial joint space narrowing, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, and knee extensor muscle strength were evaluated through the three-way analysis of variance. Results: Among 896 participants, 83.4% reported walking exercise. Female walkers showed significant improvements in symptoms (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–pain: P < 0.001; Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–symptom: P < 0.001; Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–quality of life: P < 0.001; Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–function, sports, and recreational activities: P = 0.007). Similar results were observed in male walkers (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–pain: P < 0.001; Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–symptom: P < 0.001; Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–quality of life: P = 0.001; Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score–function, sports, and recreational activities: P = 0.009). Walkers showed significantly increased knee extensor muscle strength at 24 mos (female: P < 0.001; male: P = 0.003). Female nonwalkers had significantly decreased knee extensor muscle strength at 24 mos (P < 0.001). Walkers showed significant improvement in medial joint space narrowing (odds ratio = 1.1, 95% confidence interval = 1.0–1.2) and Kellgren-Lawrence grade (OR = 1.0, 95% CI = 1.0–1.1) compared with nonwalkers. Conclusions: Walking exercise prevents structural progression and improves symptoms. Meanwhile, the increased knee extensor muscle strength in all walkers further supports the validity of recommending walking exercises for early-stage knee osteoarthritis patients. Background: Demand for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is increasing as it remains the gold-standard treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the knee are not indicated for diagnosing knee OA and represent a possible delay to orthopaedic surgeon referral and unnecessary expenditure. The purpose of this study was to determine the proportion of patients who underwent an MRI in the two years prior to their primary TKA for OA and determine patient and physician associations with increased MRI usage. Methods: This is a population-based cohort study using administrative data from Ontario, Canada. All patients over 40 years old who underwent their first primary TKA between April 1, 2008, and March 31, 2019, were included. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS and included the Cochran–Armitage test for trend of MRI prior to surgery. A predictive multivariable regression model was used to determine features correlated to receiving an MRI. Results: There were 194,989 eligible first-time TKA recipients, of which 38,244 (19.6%) received an MRI in the two years prior to their surgery. The majority of these (69.6%) were ordered by primary care physicians. Patients who received an MRI were younger, had fewer comorbidities and were more affluent than patients who did not (p < 0.001). MRI use prior to TKA increased from 2008 to 2018 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Despite MRIs rarely being indicated for the work-up of end-stage OA, nearly one in five patients have an MRI in the two years prior to their TKA. Introduction: Low socioeconomic status based on neighborhood of residence has been suggested to be associated with poor outcomes after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The area deprivation index (ADI) is a scale that ranks (zero to 100) neighborhoods by increasing socioeconomic disadvantage and accounts for median income, housing type, and family structure. We sought to examine the potential differences between high (national median ADI = 47) and low ADI among TJA recipients at a single institution. Specifically, we assessed: (1) 30-day emergency department visits/readmissions; (2) 90-day and 1-year revisions; as well as (3) medical and surgical complications. Methods: A consecutive series of primary TJAs from September 21, 2015, through December 29, 2021, at a tertiary healthcare system were reviewed. A total of 3,024 patients who had complete ADI data were included. Patients were divided into groups below the national median ADI of 47 (n = 1,896) and above (n = 1,128). Multivariable regressions to determine independent risk factors accounting for ADI, race, age, sex, American Society of Anesthesiologists Classification grade, body mass index, diabetes, congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, alcohol abuse, substance abuse, and tobacco use. The primary outcomes of interest include evaluation of the independent association of ADI with total postoperative complications (at 30 days, 90 days, and 1 year) after adjusting for multiple relevant cofactors. Results: After adjusting for multiple relevant cofactors, at 90 days, ADI > 47 (OR, 1.36, 95% CI 1.00–1.83, P = 0.04), men versus women (OR, 0.73, 95% CI 0.54–0.99, P = 0.039), and CHF (OR, 1.90, 95% CI 1.18–3.06, P = 0.009) were independently associated with increased total complications. The ADI was not associated with increased total complications at 30 days or 1-year (All P > 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings of higher complications of the ADI > 47 cohort at 90 days, reaffirm the complex relationship between ADI, patient demographics, and additional socioeconomic parameters that may influence postoperative outcomes and complications after TJA. Purpose: Factor Xa Inhibitors have emerged as a first-line agent in the management of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), but there is a need for additional data surrounding their use in the morbidly obese population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether Factor Xa Inhibitors are as safe and effective as warfarin for the treatment of NVAF in individuals with a BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2 and/or weight ≥ 120 kg. Methods: This was a multi-center retrospective cohort study comparing the use of Factor Xa Inhibitors (apixaban and rivaroxaban) to warfarin for the management of NVAF in adult patients with a BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2 and/or weight ≥ 120 kg. The primary outcomes were stroke or systemic embolism and major bleeding within 12 months. Results: A total of 3,156 patients were included in the final analysis; 1,396 in the warfarin group and 1760 in the Factor Xa Inhibitor group. The mean weight and BMI of the overall cohort was 134.1 kg and 44.7 kg/m2, respectively. There was no difference in stroke or systemic embolism (OR 1.21, 95% CI 0.78—1.85) or major bleeding (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.65 – 1.53) with Factor Xa Inhibitors compared to warfarin after controlling for covariates. Conclusion: This analysis of real-world data suggests no difference in bleeding or thrombotic outcomes for severely obese patients with NVAF taking Factor Xa Inhibitors compared to warfarin. Background: Dapagliflozin and empagliflozin are antidiabetic medications. They are the first two sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) to receive the US Food and Drug Administration approval to manage heart failure. Emerging new trials have examined changes in the 6-min walk distance as a clinically significant response to dapagliflozin and empagliflozin in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFpEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFrEF). This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effects of dapagliflozin and empagliflozin on the 6-min walk distance in patients with HFpEF and HFrEF. To our knowledge, no such meta-analysis has been published. Methods: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, we searched four electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) to identify eligible studies reported up to December 16, 2023. Using Review Manager software, we reported outcomes as risk ratios (RRs) or mean difference (MD) and confidence intervals (CIs). A p-value ≤ 0.05 is considered as statistically significant. Results: The meta-analysis included a total of 8 studies with 2624 patients. Overall, the results showed insignificant differences in the 6-min walk between the SGLT2i and placebo (MD 24, 95% CI -0.30 to 18.78, p = 0.06). Results became significant after resolving the heterogeneity (MD 6.72, 95% CI 0.13 to 13.31, p = 0.05). Notably, the results of each drug separately were insignificant. More robust observations occurred in the HFpEF group (MD 10.73, 95% CI 1.08 to 20.39, p = 0.03). Compared to placebo, patients on dapagliflozin reported significant improvement in the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire Clinical Summary (KCCQ-CS) and Overall Summary (KCCQ-OS) with values of MD 5.18 (95% CI 2.80 to 7.57, p < 0.0001) and MD 4.06 (95% CI 1.66 to 6.46, p = 0.0009), respectively. The dapagliflozin group and patients with HFpEF had reported a significant reduction in their weight compared with the control group (MD -0.59 CI -1.09 to -0.08, p = 0.02) and (MD -0.80 CI -1.47 to -0.13, p = 0.02), respectively. No significant side effects were observed for dapagliflozin or empagliflozin. Conclusion: Patients with HFpEF experienced benefits from SGLT2i administration, as evidenced by improved 6-min walk distances and weight reduction. Dapagliflozin demonstrated clinical and overall improvements in KCCQ scores and was more effective in reducing weight than the placebo. Both Dapagliflozin and Empagliflozin were well-tolerated and exhibited favorable safety profiles. As a part of ongoing perception, the human cognitive system segments others' activities into discrete episodes (event segmentation). Although prior research has shown that this process is likely related to changes in an actor's actions and goals, it has not yet been determined whether untrained observers can reliably identify action and goal changes as naturalistic activities unfold, or whether the changes they identify are tied to visual features of the activity (e.g., the beginnings and ends of object interactions). This study addressed these questions by examining untrained participants' identification of action changes, goal changes, and event boundaries while watching videos of everyday activities that were presented in both first-person and third-person perspectives. We found that untrained observers can identify goal changes and action changes consistently, and these changes are not explained by visual change and the onsets or offsets of contact with objects. Moreover, the action and goal changes identified by untrained observers were associated with event boundaries, even after accounting for objective visual features of the videos. These findings suggest that people can identify action and goal changes consistently and with high agreement, that they do so by using sensory information flexibly, and that the action and goal changes they identify may contribute to event segmentation. Background: It has been proposed that children and young people living in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs) are not only exposed more frequently to trauma but also have a higher likelihood of encountering traumas of greater severity than those living in high‐income countries (HICs). This may lead to higher rates of post‐traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, developmental pathways to risk or resilience after trauma exposure in LMICs are underresearched. Methods: We examined early parenting and attachment as potentially important formative factors for later stress reactivity in a longitudinal cohort of South African children (N = 449). Parenting and attachment were assessed at child age 18 months, and interpersonal trauma exposure, PTSS and parenting stress were measured at 13 years (N = 333; core sample with data on all measures: N = 213). Following a vulnerability‐stress approach, separate regression models were run to investigate whether parent–child attachment at 18 months, parental sensitivity and intrusiveness during play at 12 months, and current parenting stress at 13 years, interacted with adolescents' extent of interpersonal trauma exposure to predict their PTSS levels at 13 years. Results: We found no predictive effects of either early attachment or current parenting stress in relation to child PTSS. There was some evidence for predictive influences of parental early intrusiveness and sensitivity on adolescent outcomes, though associations were unexpectedly positive for the latter. No interaction effects supporting a vulnerability‐stress model were found. Conclusions: Overall, we found limited evidence that elements of the early parent–child environment predict child risk/resilience to trauma in LMIC children. Future studies should include more frequent assessments of relevant constructs to capture changes over time and consider further what comprises adaptive parenting in high‐risk contexts. Predictors of health across the life-course do not maintain the same significance in very late life and the role of financial strain in health outcomes of very old adults remain unclear. Data from adults aged 74 + in waves 5 and 7 of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (n = 772) study was used to evaluate the role of financial strain on the health of older Mexican Americans who have the highest poverty rate of any racial or ethnic group in the United States. We evaluate the association between episodic (one wave) and persistent financial strain (two waves), with follow-up health outcomes (self-rated health, ADL (limitations in activities of daily living)/IADL (limitations in instrumental activities of daily living) disability, and depressive symptoms). Adults with persistent strain were twice as likely to experience depressive symptoms and three times more likely to experience IADL limitations than the unstrained. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the systemic score in the prediction of life‐threatening evolution in Still disease. We also aimed to assess the clinical relevance of each component of the systemic score in predicting life‐threatening evolution and to derive patient subsets accordingly. Methods: A multicenter, observational, prospective study was designed including patients included in the Gruppo Italiano Di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale Adult‐Onset Still Disease Study Group and the Autoinflammatory Disease Alliance Network Still Disease Registry. Patients were assessed to see if the variables to derive the systemic score were available. The life‐threatening evolution was defined as mortality, whatever the clinical course, and/or macrophage activation syndrome, a secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis associated with a poor prognosis. Results: A total of 597 patients with Still disease were assessed (mean ± SD age 36.6 ± 17.3 years; male 44.4%). The systemic score, assessed as a continuous variable, significantly predicted the life‐threatening evolution (odds ratio [OR] 1.24; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07–1.42; P = 0.004). A systemic score ≥7 also significantly predicted the likelihood of a patient experiencing life‐threatening evolution (OR 3.36; 95% CI 1.81–6.25; P < 0.001). Assessing the clinical relevance of each component of the systemic score, liver involvement (OR 1.68; 95% CI 1.48–2.67; P = 0.031) and lung disease (OR 2.12; 95% CI 1.14–4.49; P = 0.042) both significantly predicted life‐threatening evolution. The clinical characteristics of patients with liver involvement and lung disease were derived, highlighting their relevance in multiorgan disease manifestations. Conclusion: The clinical utility of the systemic score was shown in identifying Still disease at a higher risk of life‐threatening evolution in a large cohort. Background: During the first COVID-19 pandemic wave, COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) has been reported in up to 11–28% of critically ill COVID-19 patients and associated with increased mortality. As new SARS-CoV-2 variants emerged, the characteristics of critically ill COVID-19 patients have evolved, particularly in the era of Omicron. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of CAPA in the era of new variants. Methods: This is a prospective multicenter observational cohort study conducted in France in 36 participating intensive care units (ICU), between December 7th, 2021 and April 26th 2023. Diagnosis criteria of CAPA relied on European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM)/International Society for Human & Animal Mycology (ISHAM) consensus criteria. Results: 566 patients were included over the study period. The prevalence of CAPA was 5.1% [95% CI 3.4–7.3], and rose to 9.1% among patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Univariable analysis showed that CAPA patients were more frequently immunosuppressed and required more frequently IMV support, vasopressors and renal replacement therapy during ICU stay than non-CAPA patients. SAPS II score at ICU admission, immunosuppression, and a SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant were independently associated with CAPA in multivariable logistic regression analysis. Although CAPA was not significantly associated with day-28 mortality, patients with CAPA experienced a longer duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay. Conclusion: This study contributes valuable insights into the prevalence, characteristics, and outcomes of CAPA in the era of Delta and Omicron variants. We report a lower prevalence of CAPA (5.1%) among critically-ill COVID-19 patients than previously reported, mainly affecting intubated-patients. Purpose: The aim was to describe the demographic and post-injury factors that influence time to return to learn (RTL) among student-athletes enrolled in the Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium. Methods: A total of 47,860 student-athletes enrolled in the National Collegiate Athletic Association-Department of Defense (NCAA-DoD) CARE Consortium study from 2014 to 2020, with 1485 sport-related concussions (SRCs) analyzed in the present dataset. Demographic and post-injury characteristics were calculated using descriptive statistics, followed by Kaplan–Meier estimates to examine median time to return to normal academic performance (i.e., RTL) by sex (male, female), baseline psychiatric conditions (depression, anxiety) and/or learning disorder, NCAA division (I, II, III), SRC history (0, 1, 2, 3+), NCAA sport category (contact, limited contact, non-contact sport), and median difference in baseline/post-injury symptom severity scores (< 21, ≥ 21). Further, a multivariable zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression model was used to examine their association with RTL. Results: Overall, time to RTL (mean = 4.96 ± 8.24 days, median = 3.0 [interquartile range = 0.0, 6.0] days) was found to be influenced by several factors resulting in earlier trajectories. Notably, nearly 25% of the sample demonstrated immediate RTL (i.e., 0 days). Among student-athletes who did not immediately RTL, males demonstrated a decreased rate in RTL (rate = 0.79; 95% CI 0.66–0.96) compared to females. Further, student-athletes with a ≥ 21 change in symptom severity score (post-injury baseline) demonstrated a higher rate of RTL (rate = 1.47; 95% CI 1.21–1.79) compared to student-athletes with a symptom severity change score < 21. Lastly, male student-athletes demonstrated two times higher odds (odds ratio = 1.95; 95% CI 1.02–3.73) of immediate RTL compared to female student-athletes. No other covariates were associated with time to RTL. Conclusion: Collectively, the present findings suggest a rapid return to the classroom following concussion. Specifically, males demonstrated higher odds of time to RTL, whereas those with greater differences in symptom severity resulted in a higher rate of time to RTL among those who did not immediately RTL. Objective: This study expands the literature on risk taking among college students by exploring anti-racism action as a form of positive risk taking. Participants: 346 Black (64%) and Latinx (36%) college students (85% female) ages 18–27 years (M = 18.75, SD = 1.31). Methods: Participants responded to questionnaires on anti-racism action, health-risk taking, and college functioning. Latent class analysis identified behavioral profiles of risk takers. Indicators of profile membership and associations with college functioning were examined. Results: Three profiles emerged: moderate overall risk taking, high health-risk taking, and high anti-racism action. Personal experience with discrimination was associated with a greater likelihood of health-risk taking. Students in the high anti-racism profile evinced greater educational functioning than those in the high-health risk taking profile. Conclusions: Risky behavior on college campuses is not homogeneous. Introduction: Inpatients need to recognize their fall risk accurately and objectively. Nurses need to assess how patients perceive their fall risk and identify the factors that influence patients' fall risk perception. Purpose: This study aims to explore the congruency between nurses' fall risk assessment and patients' perception of fall risk and identify factors related to the non‐congruency of fall risk. Designs: A descriptive and cross‐sectional design was used. The study enrolled 386 patients who were admitted to an acute care hospital. Six nurses assessed the participants' fall risk. Congruency was classified using the Morse Fall Scale for nurses and the Fall Risk Perception Questionnaire for patients. Findings: The nurses' fall risk assessments and patients' fall risk perceptions were congruent in 57% of the participants. Underestimation of the patient's risk of falling was associated with gender (women), long hospitalization period, department (orthopedics), low fall efficacy, and history of falls before hospitalization. Overestimation of fall risk was associated with age group, gender (men), department, and a high health literacy score. In the multiple logistic regression, the factors related to the underestimation of fall risk were hospitalization period and department, and the factors related to the overestimation of fall risk were health literacy and department. Conclusions: Nurses should consider the patient's perception of fall risk and incorporate it into fall prevention interventions. Clinical Relevance: Nurses need to evaluate whether patients perceive the risk of falling consistently. For patients who underestimate or overestimate their fall risk, it may be helpful to consider clinical and fall‐related characteristics together when evaluating their perception of fall risk. Early childhood development (ECD) is crucial for better health and well‐being throughout life, but few studies have examined how ECD relates to child malnutrition. This is mainly due to lack of reliable and disaggregated data on ECD. We estimated the prevalence of ECD delays (communication, fine motor, gross motor, problem‐solving and personal–social) and examined how different ECD domains were associated with child nutritional status in urban Ethiopia. Using a community‐based cross‐sectional survey design, 627 mother–child (12–36 months old) pairs were included in the study. The ECD was assessed using the Age and Stage Questionnaire (ASQ‐3), and the nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric measurements. The association between the ECD domains and nutritional status was analysed using ordinal logistic regression, adjusting for confounding variables. Delays in ECD domains were common, especially in fine motor domain (41.9%); and more than half of the children were stunted (52.8%). Stunting and underweight were associated with ECD delays, while wasting was not. Accordingly, stunted children were more likely to have worst ECD delays in fine motor (odds ratios [OR] = 1.54; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11; 2.15), gross motor (OR = 1.47; 95% CI: 1.05; 2.04) and problem‐solving (OR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.02; 1.96) domains compared to non‐stunted children. Similarly, underweight children were more likely to have worse ECD delays in gross motor (OR = 1.91; 95% CI: 1.20; 3.04) and fine motor (OR = 1.90; 95% CI: 1.15; 3.15) domains compared to normal children. Coordinated and targeted ECD interventions, such as nurturing care, should be promoted and implemented widely to improve ECD outcomes and child nutrition. Malnutrition and disability are major global public health problems. Poor diets, inadequate access to nutrition/health services (NaHS), and poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) all increase the risk of malnutrition and infection. This leads to poor health outcomes, including disability. To better understand the relationship between these factors, we explored access to NaHS and household WASH and dietary adequacy among households with and without children with disabilities in Uganda. We used cross‐sectional secondary data from 2021. Adjusted logistic regression was used to explore associations between disabilities, access to NaHS, WASH and dietary adequacy. Of the 6924 households, 4019 (57.9%) reported having access to necessary NaHS, with deworming and vaccination reported as both the most important and most difficult to access services. Access to services was lower for households with children with disabilities compared to those without, after adjusting for likely confounding factors (Odds ratio = 0.70; 95% CI 0.55–0.89, p = 0.003). There is evidence of an interaction between disability and WASH adequacy, with improved WASH adequacy associated with improved access to services, including for children with disabilities (interaction odds ratio = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02–1.22, p = 0.012). The proportion of malnourished children was higher among households with children with disabilities than households without it (6.3% vs. 2.4% p < 0.001). There are concerning gaps in access to NaHS services in Uganda, with households with children with disabilities reporting worse access, particularly for those with low WASH adequacy. Improved and inclusive access to NaHS and WASH needs to be urgently prioritized, especially for children with disabilities. The aim of this study was to explore gestational weight gain (GWG) trajectories and their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes. A retrospective cohort study including 11,064 women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was conducted between 2015 and 2019 in China. The latent class trajectory model was used to identify GWG trajectories, and logistic regression was performed to examine odds ratio (OR) of pregnancy outcomes. Three trajectories of GWG were identified in these 11,604 women with GDM. Trajectory 1: 64.02% of women had sustained moderate GWG throughout pregnancy; Trajectory 2: 17.75% of women showed a high initial GWG but followed by a low GWG from the third trimester until delivery; Trajectory 3: 18.23% had low initial GWG but followed by drastic GWG from the second trimester until delivery. Compared with pregnant women with Trajectory 1, women with Trajectory 2 had a higher risk of large for gestational age (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12–1.48) but at a lower risk of having hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (AOR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.57–0.96). Women in Trajectory 3 were more likely to develop small for gestational age (AOR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.62–2.78), low birthweight (AOR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.07–2.08), preterm birth (AOR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.05–1.63), caesarean section (AOR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.112–1.42) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (AOR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.82–2.76). The association of GWG trajectory with adverse pregnancy outcomes differs across prepregnancy body mass index and GWG categories. Women with a slow initial GWG but followed by drastic GWG had higher risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Early clinical recognition of poor GWG trajectory will contribute to early intervention in high‐risk groups to minimise adverse outcomes. We aimed to describe how breastfeeding relates to adherence to complementary feeding (CF) recommendations, diet diversification and feeding skills development and whether sociodemographic factors explain any differences observed. The Scottish Maternal Infant and Nutrition Survey for infants aged 8–12 months collected breastfeeding history, CF practices, diet and sociodemographic data using a self‐completion questionnaire. Non‐healthful CF practices were starting CF < 6 months, any consumption of sugar‐sweetened beverages (SSBs), sweet or salty snacks (treats) or unmodified cow's milk and regular consumption of commercial baby foods. Diet diversification and feeding skills were assessed by amount of self‐feeding and number of food groups, meals and snacks eaten daily. Of the 2730 mothers, 20% were solely infant formula fed (IFF) and 48% continued breastfeeding ≥6 months. Compared to IFF babies, mothers who gave any breast milk ≥6 months were more likely to start CF ≥ 6 months compared to those IFF (66% vs. 37%) and less likely to give treats (15% vs. 45%), SSBs (11% vs. 20%) and commercial baby foods (31% vs. 53%). These associations remained highly significant (p < 0.001) even after sociodemographic factor adjustment. Despite starting CF later, infants breastfed ≥6 months ate the same number of food groups and meals as those IFF, were just as likely to self‐feed purees and more likely to self‐feed finger foods daily (87% vs. 81% p < 0.001). Mothers who breastfeed beyond 6 months adhere more to CF recommendations and start CF later compared to IFF, but their babies eat a similarly diverse diet and have similar feeding skills. Background: Frailty has been associated with increased postoperative mortality and morbidity; however, the use of the modified frailty index (mFI-11) to assess patients undergoing surgery for diverticular disease has not been widely assessed. This paper aims to examine frailty, evaluated by mFI-11, to assess postoperative morbidity and mortality among patients undergoing operative intervention for colonic diverticular disease. Methods: We used data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample (October 1, 2015–December 31, 2019). ICD-10-CM codes were utilized to identify a cohort of adult patients with a primary admission diagnosis of diverticulitis. mFI-11 items were adapted to correspond with ICD-10-CM codes. Patients were stratified into robust (mFI < 0.27) and frail (mFI ≥ 0.27) groups. Primary outcomes were in-hospital postoperative morbidity and mortality. Secondary outcomes included system-specific postoperative complications, length of stay (LOS), total admission cost, and discharge disposition. Multivariable regression models were fit. Results: Of the 26,826 patients, there were 24,194 patients with mFI-11 < 0.27 (i.e., robust) and 2,632 patients with mFI-11 ≥ 0.27 (i.e., frail). Adjusted analysis showed significant increases in postoperative mortality (aOR 2.16, 95% CI 1.38–3.38, p = 0.001) and overall postoperative morbidity (aOR 1.84, 95% CI 1.65–2.06, p < 0.001). LOS was higher in the frail group (MD 1.78 days, 95% CI 1.46–2.11, p < 0.001) as well as total cost (MD $25,495.19, 95% CI $19,851.63-$31,138.75, p < 0.001). Conclusion: In the elective setting, a high mFI-11 (i.e., presence of the variables comprising the index) could alert clinicians to the possibility of implementing preoperative optimization strategies. Background: Small intestinal stromal tumors (SISTs) are a rare type of mesenchymal tumor. Gender is known to influence the incidence and prognosis of various tumors, but its role on the survival of SISTs at the population level remains unclear. Therefore, we aim to explore the relationship between gender and the prognosis of SISTs using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Methods: Data on SISTs patients from 2000 to 2019 were derived from the SEER database. Multiple imputation was used to address missing data. Kaplan–Meier analyses and Cox proportional hazard models were applied to evaluate the impact of demographic and clinical characteristics on overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Results: A total of 3513 patients with SISTs were analyzed, including 1921 males and 1592 females. Kaplan–Meier analysis coupled with log-rank testing demonstrated a significantly higher mortality rate among male patients compared to females (P < 0.001). Notably, female patients exhibited superior OS (hazard ratio [HR] 0.808, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.724–0.902, P < 0.001) and CSS (HR 0.801, 95% CI 0.692–0.927, P = 0.003) compared to male patients. While the mean 1-year CSS rates were comparable between genders (95.3% for males vs. 96.0% for females, P = 0.332), male patients consistently showed lower mean survival rates at 3-, 5-, and 10-year intervals. Surgical intervention significantly boosted 5-year OS and CSS rates in both male and female patients (P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis identified age, sex, grade, TNM stage, surgery, and mitotic rate as independent risk factors for OS and CSS in patients with SISTs. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that male patients with SISTs have a higher risk of mortality compared to female patients, indicating that gender may serve as a predictive indicator for survival in this patient population. Objective: To investigate the risk factors for delayed postoperative bleeding after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with gastric precancerous lesions and to construct a risk prediction model. Methods: This retrospective analysis included clinical data from patients with gastric precancerous lesions who underwent ESD at Wuhan University People's Hospital between November 2016 and June 2022. An XGBoost model was built to predict delayed bleeding after ESD using risk factors identified by univariable and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The model was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), and SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was used to interpret the model. Results: Seven factors were statistically associated with delayed postoperative bleeding in gastric precancerous lesions after ESD: age, low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, hypertension, lesion size ≥ 40 mm, operative time ≥ 120 min, female, and nonuse of hemoclips. A risk prediction model was established. In the training cohort, the model achieved an AUC of 0.97 (0.96–0.98), a sensitivity of 0.90, a specificity of 0.94, and an F1 score of 0.91. In the validation cohort, the AUC was 0.94(0.90–0.98), with a sensitivity of 0.85, a specificity of 0.89, and an F1 score of 0.85. In the test cohort, the AUC was 0.94 (0.89–0.99), the sensitivity was 0.80, the specificity was 0.92, and the F1 score was 0.84, indicating strong predictive capability. Conclusion: In this study, an XGBoost prediction model for assessing the risk of delayed postoperative bleeding after ESD in patients with gastric precancerous lesions was developed and validated. Background: Although esophageal achalasia has been historically treated by Heller myotomy, endoscopic esophageal dilatations are nowadays often the first-line treatment in children. The aim was to assess whether performing an endoscopic dilatation before a Heller myotomy is associated with higher risks of esophageal perforation in children. Methods: A retrospective multicentric study was performed, including children that underwent a Heller myotomy (2000–2022, 10 centers). Two groups were compared based on the history of previous dilatation before myotomy. Outcomes esophageal perforation (intra-operative or secondary) and post-operative complications requiring surgery (Clavien-Dindo III). Statistics Comparisons using contingency tables or Kruskal–Wallis when appropriate. Statistical significance: p-value < 0.05. Results: A Heller myotomy was performed in 77 children (median age: 11.8 years), with prior endoscopic dilatation in 53% (n = 41). A laparoscopic approach was used in 90%, with associated fundoplication in 95%. Esophageal perforation occurred in 19% of children (n = 15), including 12 patients with intra-operative mucosal tear and 3 with post-operative complications related to an unnoticed esophageal perforation. Previous endoscopic dilatation did not increase the risk of esophageal perforation (22% vs 17%, OR: 1.4, 95%CI: 0.43–4.69). Post-operative complications occurred in 8% (n = 6), with similar rates regardless of prior endoscopic dilatation. Intra-operative mucosal tear was the only risk factor for post-operative complications, increasing the risk of complications from 5 to 25% (OR: 6.89, 95%CI: 1.38–31.87). Conclusions: Prior endoscopic dilatations did not increase the risk of esophageal perforation or postoperative complications of Heller myotomy in this cohort of children with achalasia. Background: No consensus has been concluded with regarding to the scope of lymph node (LN) dissection for Siewert type II and III adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG). This study aimed to explore risk factors for lower perigastric LN (LPLN) metastases (including no. 4d, 5, 6, and 12a LN stations) and analyze the indications for LPLN dissection. Methods: In total, 302 consecutive patients with Siewert type II and III AEG who underwent total gastrectomy (TG) were enrolled. The logistic regression model was used to perform uni- and multivariate analyses of risk factors for LPLN metastases. Kaplan–Meier curves were used for survival analysis, and log-rank tests were used for group comparisons. Basing on the guidelines of Japanese Gastric Cancer Association, the LN metastases (LNM) as well as the efficiency index (EI) of each LN station was further evaluated. Results: The independent risk factors for LPLN metastases in patients with Siewert type II and III AEG were distance from the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) to the distal end of the tumor (> 4.0 cm), preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (+), pT4 stage, and HER-2 (+). LPLN metastases was an independent risk factor for overall survival following TG. The LNM and EI of LPLN were 8.6% and 2.31%, respectively. The LNM of LPLN > 10% under the stratification of the distance from the EGJ to the distal end of the tumor (> 4.0 cm), pT4, preoperative CEA (+), and HER-2 (+) exhibited EI values of 3.55%, 2.09%, 2.51%, and 3.64%, respectively. Conclusions: LPLN metastases was a malignant factor for the prognosis of patients with Siewert type II and III AEG. For patients with preoperative CEA (+), pT4 stage, HER-2 (+), and the distance from the EGJ to the distal end of the tumor (> 4.0 cm), TG with LPLN dissection is prioritized for clinical recommendation. Introduction: Ventral hernia repair (VHR) is one of the most common procedures in the United States, and drains are used in over 50% of mesh repairs. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of drains on surgical site occurrences (SSO) and infection (SSI) after open and minimally invasive retromuscular VHR with mesh. Methods: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from the ACHQC was performed to include adult patients who underwent elective VHR with retromuscular mesh placement. Univariate analysis was performed comparing drain and no-drain groups. A logistic regression was performed to identify factors independently associated with increased SSO, SSI, readmission, and length of stay (LOS). Results: 6945 patients underwent elective VHR with sublay mesh. Most patients had M2 and M3 hernias in both groups (with Drain and no-drain). The median LOS was 4.7 (SD 8.3) in the drain group and 1.6 (SD 8.4) in the no-drain group (p < 0.001). 30-day SSI was higher in the drain group (176; 3.8% vs 25; 1.1%; p < 0.001). Despite lower SSO overall in the drain group (470; 10.0% vs 286; 12.7%; p < 0.001), SSO or SSI requiring intervention (SSOPI) was higher in the drain group (240; 5.1% vs 44; 1.9%; p < 0.001). Logistic regression identified diabetes (OR 1.3, CI 1.1–1.6; p < 0.001) and BMI (OR 1.04, CI 1.03–1.05; p < 0.001) as predictors of SSO, while the use of a drain was protective (OR 0.61; CI 0.5–0.8; p < 0.001). For SSI, logistic regression showed diabetes (OR 1.6, CI 1.2–2.3; p = 0.004) and open approach (OR 3.5, CI 2.1–5.9; p < 0.001) as predictors. Conclusions: Drain placement during retromuscular VHR with mesh was predictive of decreased postoperative SSO occurrence but associated with increased LOS. Objective There is limited evidence on when to obtain a central nervous system (CNS) biopsy in suspected primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS). Our objective was to identify which clinical and radiological characteristics were associated with a positive biopsy in PACNS. Methods From the multicentre retrospective Cohort of Patients with Primary Vasculitis of the CNS (COVAC), we included adults with PACNS based on a positive CNS biopsy or otherwise unexplained intracranial stenoses with additional findings supportive of vasculitis. Baseline findings were compared between patients with a positive and negative biopsy using logistic regression models. Results Two hundred patients with PACNS were included, among which a biopsy was obtained in 100 (50%) and was positive in 61 (31%). Patients with a positive biopsy were more frequently female (odds ratio [OR] 2.90; 95% CI: 1.25, 7.10; P  = 0.01) and more often presented with seizures (OR 8.31; 95% CI: 2.77, 33.04; P  < 0.001) or cognitive impairment (OR 2.58; 95% CI: 1.11, 6.10; P  = 0.03). On imaging, biopsy positive patients more often had non-ischaemic parenchymal or leptomeningeal gadolinium enhancement (OR 52.80; 95% CI: 15.72, 233.06; P  < 0.001) or ≥1 cerebral microbleed (OR 8.08; 95% CI: 3.03, 25.13; P  < 0.001), and less often had ≥1 acute brain infarct (OR 0.02; 95% CI: 0.004, 0.08; P  < 0.001). In the multivariable model, non-ischaemic parenchymal or leptomeningeal gadolinium enhancement (adjusted OR 8.27; 95% CI: 1.78, 38.46; P  < 0.01) and absence of ≥1 acute brain infarct (adjusted OR 0.13; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.65; P  = 0.01) were significantly associated with a positive biopsy. Conclusion Baseline clinical and radiological characteristics differed between biopsy positive and negative PACNS. Identifying and contrasting different patterns of intimate partner violence (IPV) (e.g. situational couple violence, coercive controlling violence) is useful for understanding IPV and its connections with health. Applying this approach to dissociation may be fruitful, given theoretical perspectives that predict a specific connection between coercive controlling violence and dissociative symptoms. To address this, community women with divorce histories (N = 188) completed measures to identify patterns of IPV victimization in prior relationships (no direct violence, situational couple violence, coercive controlling violence), and to quantify recent dissociative symptoms and number of depressed days, for comparison. Contrary to predictions, the predicted odds of recent dissociative symptoms did not differ between women who experienced situational couple violence versus coercive controlling violence. However, the latter group had greater odds of recent dissociative symptoms, but not depressed days, compared to women with no histories of direct violence. Further, a continuous measure of coercive control was uniquely associated with increased odds of dissociative symptoms. This study provides preliminary empirical support for a connection between coercive controlling violence and dissociative symptoms, compared to women without histories of direct violence. Background: Epidemiological and nutritional modifications are causing an increase in stunting in many low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMIC), which will eventually result in juvenile diseases and mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the influential factors contributing to stunting among under‐five children in Cambodia. Methods: A secondary dataset consisting of 3268 under‐five children was extracted from the latest Cambodian Demographic and Health Survey (CDHS)‐2021/2022 dataset. The Chi‐square test and Boruta algorithm were used for covariate selection, and logistic regression approaches were used to determine the influence of demographic, socioeconomic and other factors on the presence of stunting. Results: Findings revealed that about 21% of under‐five children were stunted, and the prevalence of stunting was higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The prevalence of child stunting was lower in families with highly educated parents. A child whose father had a secondary education had 0.71 times lower (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.520–0.969) chance of stunting than a child whose father had no education. Findings revealed that Ratnak Kiri, Mondul Kiri, Stung Treng, Pursat and Kampot had a greater prevalence of stunting than other places, ranging from 27.11% to 35.70%, whereas Banteay Meanchey, Phnom Penh and Kandal had the lowest rates, ranging from 12.80% to 16.00%. Results of the Boruta algorithm and logistic regression suggested that under‐five stunting is significantly influenced by factors such as the child's age, size at birth, mother's age at first birth, mother's body mass index (BMI), father's educational status, cooking fuel, and wealth index. Conclusions: It is necessary to take initiatives for reducing the prevalence of stunted children prioritising the identified factors that ultimately help to reduce the burden of child health. Background: Sciatic nerve palsy is a rare but devastating complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). While the use of the direct anterior approach is increasing, limited data exist regarding sciatic nerve palsy and surgical approach. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors and outcomes associated with sciatic nerve palsy (SNP) after THA. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed at a single institution of 7 SNP that occurred in 4045 THA via direct anterior approach and 10 SNP in 8854 THA via posterior approach, being operated between 01 January 2017 and 12 December 2021. SNP patients were matched 1:5 to patients without SNP. Medical records were reviewed for demographics including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), comorbidities, and preoperative indication. Additional workup of SNP patients including advanced imaging and reoperation were documented. Recovery grades were assigned to all SNP patients at most recent clinical follow-up. Results: 5 of the SNP were complete and 12 partial. They occurred as frequently with the direct anterior (0.17%) and posterior approach (0.11%, p = 0.5). The presence of femur cables and reoperations were associated with SNP (p = 0.04 and p = 0.002, respecitvely). Age, gender, BMI, comorbidities, and surgical indication had no effect on SNP. 4 of the 17 affected patients had almost complete recovery at latest follow-up. Conclusions: The incidence of SNP was similar in direct anterior and posterior approach. Surgeons should counsel patients regarding the risks of SNP regardless of the used approach. Purpose: This study evaluates whether IBD patients are at increased risk of implant-related complications after THA. Materials and methods: A retrospective study from 01 January 2010 to 31 October 31 2020 using an administrative claims database was performed. IBD patients undergoing THA (n = 11,025), without corticosteroid treatment, were propensity score matched to controls in a 1:5 ratio (n = 55,121) based on age, sex, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). Outcomes evaluated included periprosthetic fracture, aseptic loosening, prosthetic joint infection, and THA revision within 2 years of index procedure. Chi-square analyses were used to compare the matched cohorts. The association of IBD and implant-related complications was evaluated using logistical regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), and p -values. A p- value < 0.001 was used as the significance threshold. Results: Patients with IBD had a greater incidence and odds of total implant complications (7.03% vs. 3.98%; OR 1.76; p < 0.001) compared with matched controls. IBD patients had significantly higher incidence and odds of developing periprosthetic fracture (0.50% vs. 0.20%; OR 2.46; p < 0.001), THA revisions (2.21% vs. 1.17%; OR 1.91; p < 0.001), aseptic loosening (1.45% vs. 0.84%; OR 1.75; p < 0.001), and prosthetic joint infection (2.87% vs. 1.77%; OR 1.64; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients with IBD who underwent primary THA had a significantly higher risk of implant-related complications compared to matched controls. Objective: Tobacco use is elevated among individuals with eating disorders (EDs). Yet, further research is needed to understand associations between cigarette and e-cigarette use patterns and ED symptomatology. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of tobacco use and EDs, this study characterized ED symptomatology and tobacco use patterns, including exclusive cigarette use, e-cigarette use, dual use, and nonuse. Method: Young adults aged 18-24 years who self-reported exclusive cigarette, e-cigarette, dual, or nonuse (N = 2500) were recruited via Lucid, an online survey management company. Participants completed questionnaires assessing body dissatisfaction, global ED psychopathology, binge eating and self-induced vomiting frequency, and demographics. ED diagnostic groups included: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia spectrum eating disorders (BSED), atypical AN, and night eating syndrome (NES). Results: Multinomial logistic models revealed those with AN were more likely to be dual users, those with atypical AN were more likely to be exclusive e-cigarette users, and participants with a BSED or NES were more likely to be exclusive e-cigarette or dual users, compared to those without an ED. General linear models suggested body dissatisfaction and global ED psychopathology were higher among exclusive e-cigarette and dual users, while binge eating and self-induced vomiting frequencies were greater among all tobacco use groups compared to nonusers. Discussion: Our findings suggest young adults with ED symptomatology were more likely to be users of e-cigarettes exclusively or dual users. Aging is a complex, multifactorial, and inevitable process, which begins before birth and continues throughout the life. Multimorbidity prevailing among the geriatric population is an important health challenge for most of the developing countries. To examine the effect of gender and increasing age on the survival of the geriatric population suffering from multimorbidity. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the geriatric population of the Jammu district, J and K, using multistage sampling procedure, and the analysis was conducted using the Kaplan-Meier method and survival analysis using software IBM SPSS version 24.0. Our study included 1150 study subjects, of whom 610 (53%) were males and 540 (47%) were females, respectively. It was indicated that the probability for the survival of the study population suffering from morbidity belonging to 60-64 years was higher than the survival of the geriatric population belonging to other age-groups or we can say that survival probability of the geriatric population suffering from morbidities decreases with the increase in age. Also, it was reported that probability for the survival of the female geriatric population suffering from morbidity was slightly higher than the survival of the male geriatric population. Gender had no significant effect on survival of the geriatric population suffering from morbidities, whereas baseline age had a significant effect on the survival of the geriatric population suffering from morbidities as their survival probability decreases with the increase in age. Background: Uterine rupture is a rare, but dangerous obstetric complication that can occur during trial of vaginal birth. Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between peripartum infection at the first caesarean delivery to uterine dehiscence or rupture at the subsequent delivery. We conducted a retrospective case-control study from March 2014 to October 2020 at a single academic medical center. The study group included women with a prior caesarean delivery and proven dehiscence or uterine rupture diagnosed during their subsequent delivery. The control group included women who went through a successful vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) without evidence of dehiscence or uterine rupture. We compared the rate of peripartum infection during the first cesarean delivery (CD) and other relevant variables, between the two groups. Results: A total of 168 women were included, 71 with uterine rupture or dehiscence and 97 with successful VBAC as the control group. The rate of peripartum infection at the first caesarean delivery was significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (22.2% vs. 8.2%, p = 0.013). Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that peripartum infection remained an independent risk factor for uterine rupture at the subsequent trial of labor after CD (95% confidence interval, p = 0.034). Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) for bifurcation coronary lesions. Methods: A total of 1000 patients who underwent PCI for coronary bifurcation lesions and had clinical follow-up were divided into two groups based on the duration of DAPT: DAPT > 12 months and DAPT ≤ 12 months). Patients who experienced a myocardial infarction, required repeat PCI, or died within 1 year after the initial procedure were excluded. Results: Among the 1000 eligible patients, 394 patients received DAPT for > 12 months (39.4%). Most patients in our study presented with chronic coronary disease (61%). The majority of patients in our study (62.8%) had a low bleeding risk. The median follow-up duration was 35 months (interquartile range 20.6–36.5). There were no significant differences in the major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) between groups of prolonged DAPT (> 12 month) and DAPT ≤ 12 months (18.8% vs. 14.9%, p = 0.11). Patients with clinical features of high ischemic risk (HIR) had a significantly increased risk of MACE (hazard ratio [HR] 1.92, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12–3.26, p = 0.015) when compared with patients without clinical features of HIR. Compared with DAPT ≤ 12 months, extended DAPT (> 12 months) did not improve outcomes in patients with clinical (HR 1.24, 95% CI 0.90–1.72, p = 0.19) and technical features (HR 1.04, 95% CI 0.67–1.63, p = 0.85) of HIR. Conclusion: In this multicenter real-world registry, administration of DAPT for more than 12 months in patients who have undergone PCI for bifurcation lesion is not associated with a reduced incidence of MACE in long-term follow-up. Objective: This study aimed to compare the healing of periapical bone between type II diabetes patients and healthy patients after root canal treatment. Subjects and Methods: This study included 26 diabetic patients and the control group with healthy patients matching the diabetic group in age and sex. The study included only teeth with satisfactory coronal restoration. The periapical index system was used to evaluate the periapical status of treated teeth at follow‐ups after 6 and 12 months. Results: Analysis of the results revealed a significantly higher healing rate in the control group compared to the diabetic group only at the 6‐month follow‐up (66.6 vs. 33.3%; Χ2 = 4.857; p = 0.0275). Analysis of the full‐scale PAI index disclosed significantly higher PAI values in the diabetic subjects at 6‐ and 12‐month follow‐up. The regression analysis showed that the risk of apical periodontitis persistence increased significantly with female gender (OR = 3.92; 95% CI = 1.04–14.79; p = 0.043), diabetes mellitus (OR = 4.27; 95% CI: 1.18–15.50; p = 0.027) and higher household income (OR = 5.39; 95% CI = 1.33–21.89; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Root canal treatment remains an effective means of conservative treatment in diabetic patients. Background: There is a paucity of literature evaluating long-term outcomes and survivorship of patients undergoing primary hip arthroscopy with capsular repair for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). Purpose: To report 10-year survivorship and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after primary hip arthroscopy with capsular repair for FAIS and evaluate the effect of capsular repair in patients at the highest risk for conversion to arthroplasty. Methods: Data were prospectively collected and retrospectively reviewed on all patients undergoing primary hip arthroscopy with capsular repair between October 2008 and February 2011. Patients with a minimum 10-year follow-up on the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), Nonarthritic Hip Score (NAHS), and visual analog scale for pain (VAS) scores were selected. The preoperative and minimum 10-year follow-up Hip Outcome Score—Sports Specific Subscale (HOS-SSS) scores were also reported, if available. Patients with ipsilateral hip surgery, worker's compensation, Tönnis osteoarthritis grade >1, and hip dysplasia (lateral center-edge angle <25°) were excluded. Survivorship, PROS, and clinical benefit—minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS)—were reported. An additional propensity-matched subanalysis was performed on patients at the highest risk for conversion to arthroplasty, comparing patients undergoing capsular repair to patients with unrepaired capsules. Results: A total of 145 (n = 130 patients) out of 180 eligible hips (n = 165 patients) had a minimum 10-year follow-up (80.6%). Also, 126 hips (86.9%) belonged to women, and 19 hips (13.1%) belonged to men. The mean patient age was 30.3 ± 12.9 years. The survivorship rate was 91% at the 10-year follow-up. The cohort experienced significant improvements (P <.001) in the mHHS, NAHS, HOS-SSS, and VAS for pain scores. Moreover, the cohort achieved high rates of the PASS for the mHHS (89.8%), high rates of the MCID for the mHHS (82.4%), and high rates of the MCID for VAS for pain (80.6%) scores. In the propensity-matched subanalysis performed on patients with the highest risk for arthroplasty, 29 hips with capsular repair were matched to 81 hips with unrepaired capsules. While both groups experienced significant improvements in all PROs (P <.05), the group without capsule repair trended toward a higher conversion to arthroplasty rate when compared with the repair group. In addition, an odds ratio was calculated for the likelihood of converting to arthroplasty after having an unrepaired capsule compared with capsular repair (2.54 [95% CI, 0.873-7.37]; P =.087). Conclusion: Patients undergoing primary hip arthroscopy with capsular repair experienced a high survivorship rate of 91% at a minimum 10-year follow-up. Patients who did not convert to arthroplasty saw favorable improvements in PROs and achieved high clinical benefit rates. This study aimed at identifying and characterizing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in a sample of cancer patients and subsequently evaluating the relationship between ACEs and prescription of psychotropic medication among them. Individuals with ACEs have a higher risk of mental health conditions and are more likely to be prescribed psychotropic medications. A sample of 178 adult patients receiving Supportive Oncology & Survivorship (SOS) services at Huntsman Cancer Hospital in Utah was obtained. ACEs and Brief Resilient Coping Scale (BRCS) questionnaires were administered confidentially. A multivariable mixed effect model, adjusting for sex, age, and insurance type while controlling for zip-codes clustering were employed. Compared to the prevalence of ACEs in the general population, from the CDC-Kaiser Permanente ACEs Study, we found no significant difference in the prevalence of people who had experienced an adverse childhood event (ACEs score > = 1) between our study of cancer patients and the CDC-Kaiser study (67.4% vs. 63.6%, p = 0.29372), but found a significant difference in the prevalence of people who had experienced severe adverse childhood experiences (ACES score > =4) (25.3% vs. 12.1%, p < 0.00001). Furthermore, this study reveals a significant association between an increase of one unit in the total ACEs score and the odds of psychotropic medication prescription in the past 12 months (OR: 1.233; 95% CI: 1.025, 1.483). Those with a total ACEs score of three or more were found to have 280% higher odds of being prescribed psychotropic medication compared to those with ACEs ≤ 2 (OR: 3.822; 95% CI: 1.404,10.407). Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the duration of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and its effect on outcomes. Also, we sought to identify hospital mortality predictors and determine when ECMO support began to be ineffective. Methods: This was a single-center, retrospective cohort study conducted between January 2014 and January 2022. The prolonged ECMO (pECMO) cut-off point was accepted as 14 days. Results: Thirty-one (29.2%) of 106 patients followed up with ECMO had pECMO. The mean follow-up period of the patients who underwent pECMO was 22 (range, 15–72) days, and the mean age was 75 ± 72 months. According to the results of our heterogeneous study population, life expectancy decreased dramatically towards the 21st day. Hospital mortality predictors were determined in the logistic regression analysis in all ECMO groups in our study as high Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction (PELOD) two score, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) use, and sepsis. The pECMO mortality was 61.2% and the overall mortality was 53.0%, with the highest mortality rate in the bridge-to-transplant group (90.9%) because of lack of organ donation in our country. Conclusions: In our study, the PELOD two score, presence of sepsis, and use of CRRT were found to be in the predictors of in-hospital ECMO mortality model. Considering the complications, in the COX regression model analysis, the factors affecting the probability of dying in patients followed under ECMO were found to be bleeding, thrombosis, and thrombocytopenia. Background: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a numerical measure of the variation in the size of circulating red blood cells. Recently, there is increasing interest in the role of RDW as a biomarker for inflammatory states and as a prognostication tool for a wide range of clinical manifestations. The predictive power of RDW on mortality among patients receiving mechanical circulatory support remains largely unknown. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 281 VA-ECMO patients at a tertiary referral academic hospital from 2009 to 2019 was performed. RDW was dichotomized with RDW-Low <14.5% and RDW-High ≥14.5%. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at 30 days and 1 year. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the association between RDW and the clinical outcomes after adjusting for additional confounders. Results: 281 patients were included in the analysis. There were 121 patients (43%) in the RDW-Low group and 160 patients (57%) in the RDW-High group. Survival to ECMO decannulation [RDW-H: 58% versus RDW-L: 67%, p = 0.07] were similar between the two groups. Patients in RDW-H group had higher 30-days mortality (RDW-H: 67.5% vs RDW-L: 39.7%, p < 0.001) and 1 year mortality (RDW-H: 79.4% vs RDW-L: 52.9%, p < 0.001) compared to patients in the RDW-L group. After adjusting for confounders, Cox proportional hazards model demonstrated that patients with high RDW had increased odds of mortality at 30 days (hazard ratio 1.9, 95% CI 1.2–3.0, p < 0.01) and 1 year (hazard ratio 1.9, 95% CI 1.3–2.8, p < 0.01) compared to patients with low RDW. Conclusions: Among patients receiving mechanical circulatory support with VA-ECMO, a higher RDW was independently associated with increased 30-days and 1-year mortality. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess adherence to asthma controller therapy and factors that influence asthma control and to determine the association between asthma knowledge of the caregiver and asthma control among admitted children with asthma. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2022 and May 2023 in a tertiary care hospital. Children with a diagnosis of asthma aged 2--14 years, who were admitted to the hospital with an exacerbation of asthma were identified. METHODS: Caregivers of the admitted children were interviewed using the Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire and Pediatric Inhaler Adherence Questionnaire. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Demographic and clinical data were described using descriptive analyses, where mean and standard deviation were used for normally distributed continuous variables, median and interquartile range (IQR), if otherwise. A P < 0.05 was set as a cutoff for statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 144 caregivers completed the survey. Median score for parents' knowledge of asthma was 64%, with an IQR of 59-67. Both mother's and father's educational levels were associated with a good level of knowledge: odds ratio (OR) = 2.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1-5.6, and OR = 5.33, 95% CI = 2.23-12.7, respectively. Median adherence to metered dose inhaler (MDI) was 4 (IQR = 2-6). Children who had been admitted to the general ward in the last 6 months were three times more likely to be nonadherent to MDI (OR = 3.03, 95% CI = 1.18-7.82). Forty-three percent of children who were nonadherent to MDI were less likely to have their asthma controlled (OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.17-1.06). CONCLUSION: This study revealed that a low level of knowledge among caregivers of asthma patients is linked to inadequate adherence to asthma controller therapy. As medication adherence is crucial for achieving desirable asthma control and improving the quality of life for this population, efforts need to be made to enhance the knowledge level of parents of children with asthma.
