The article reports that rail company Southern Pacific System has initiated a program to reduce its debt by 25 percent. According to the author, the company has solved several maturity problems encountered in the past by open-market purchases of outstanding bonds. The author adds that Southern Pacific experienced a 60 percent drop in revenues in the 1929-1933 period and recovered its financial status by 1940 with reported earnings of 2.47 U.S. dollar per share. The factors that led to the company's success in reducing debt are discussed.
