We present a determination of the QCD parameter Lambda in the quenched approximation (n_f=0) and for two flavours (n_f=2) of light dynamical quarks. The calculations are performed on the lattice using O(a) improved Wilson fermions and include taking the continuum limit. We find Lambda_{n_f=0} = 259(1)(20) MeV and Lambda_{n_f=2} = 261(17)(26) MeV}, using r_0 = 0.467 fm to set the scale. Extrapolating our results to five flavours, we obtain for the running coupling constant at the mass of the Z boson alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.112(1)(2). 16 pp. (1995)., Jet production in deep inelastic scattering for 120 < Q 2 < 3600 GeV 2 has been studied using data from an integrated luminosity of 3.2 pb −1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified with the JADE algorithm. A cut on the angular distribution of parton emission in the γ ∗ - parton centre-of-mass system minimises the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the jet rates. The jet rates, when compared to O ( α s 2 ) perturbative QCD calculations, allow a precise determination of α s ( Q ) in three Q 2 -intervals. The values are consistent with a running of ifα s ( Q ), as expected from QCD. Extrapolating to Q = M Z 0 α s ( M Z 0 ) = 0.117 ± 0.005 (stat) −0.005 +0.004 (syst exp ) ± 0.007 (syst theory ).

6 pp. (1995)., Precise determinations of the strong coupling constant in hadronic collisions demand sets of parton densities spanning a sufficiently wide range of values for the QCD scale parameter Λ. For such applications, we supplement the recent GRV parametrization by five sets of dynamically generated parton distributions for Λ-values corresponding to αS(MZ2) between 0.104 and 0.122. Present DIS data, including recent small-x HERA results, do not appreciably discriminate between these sets.

152 pp. (1995)., A novel approach to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in generic ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box contributions, and universal ones from contributions to the gauge boson propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form factors $\bar{e}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{s}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{g}_Z^2(q^2)$ and $\bar{g}_W^2 (q^2)$ corresponding to the $\gamma\gamma$, $\gamma Z$, $ZZ$ and $WW$ propagators. Under the assumption that only the Standard Model contributes to the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are determined at $q~2=0$ and at $q^2=m^2_Z$ by fitting to all available precision experiments. These values are then compared systematically with predictions of ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories. In all fits $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ and $\bar{\alpha}(m_Z^2)$ are treated as external parameters in order to keep the interpretation as flexible as possible. The treatment of the electroweak data is presented in detail together with the relevant theoretical formulae used to interpret the data. No deviation from the Standard Model has been identified. Ranges of the top quark and Higgs boson masses are derived as functions of $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ and $\bar{\alpha}(m^2_Z)$. Also discussed are consequences of the recent precision measurement of the left-right asymmetry at SLC as well as the impact of a top quark mass and an improved $W$ mass measurement.

We show that the new formulation, when applied to the ρ parameter for mt≊158 GeV, gives a result of similar magnitude to those previously obtained. In fact, it is quite close to our ‘‘resonance’’ calculation. We also present a simple estimate of the size of the threshold effects based on an elementary Bohr-atom model of tt¯ resonances.

15 pp. (1994)., A next--to--leading order QCD analysis of deep inelastic scattering data is performed allowing for contributions due to a light gluino. We obtain the values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) \pm \delta \alpha_s^{stat} = 0.108 \pm 0.002, 0.124 \pm 0.001, 0.145 \pm 0.009$ for QCD, SUSY QCD with a Majorana gluino and a Dirac gluino respectively. The value of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ obtained in SUSY QCD with a Majorana gluino best agrees with the direct measurements of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ at LEP.

26 pp. (1994)., The deep inelastic scattering 2+1 jet cross- section is a useful observable for precision tests of QCD, e.g. measuring the strong coupling constant alpha(s). A consistent analysis requires a good understanding of the theoretical uncertainties and one of the most fundamental ones in QCD is due to the renormalization scheme and scale ambiguity. Different methods, which have been proposed to resolve the scale ambiguity, are applied to the 2+1 jet cross-section and the uncertainty is estimated. It is shown that the uncertainty can be made smaller by choosing the jet definition in a suitable way.

20 pp. (1993)., We comment on the numerical calculation of the Lipatov pomeron in the measurement of “hot spots” in deep inelastic scattering. We illustrate that previous analytic estimates based upon the leading term in the Lipatov equation are accurate within 20%. We present evidence that numerical calculations should be done with a fixed αs. The use of a running $α_s$ appears as an unnecessary complication. We argue that at low Q2 the BFKL pomeron requires higher-order corrections.
