Current neural network models of primate vision focus on replicating overall levels of behavioral accuracy, often neglecting perceptual decisions' rich, dynamic nature. Here, we introduce a novel computational framework to model the dynamics of human behavioral choices by learning to align the temporal dynamics of a recurrent neural network (RNN) to human reaction times (RTs). We describe an approximation that allows us to constrain the number of time steps an RNN takes to solve a task with human RTs. The approach is extensively evaluated against various psychophysics experiments. We also show that the approximation can be used to optimize an "ideal-observer" RNN model to achieve an optimal tradeoff between speed and accuracy without human data. The resulting model is found to account well for human RT data. Finally, we use the approximation to train a deep learning implementation of the popular Wong-Wang decision-making model. The model is integrated with a convolutional neural network (CNN) model of visual processing and evaluated using both artificial and natural image stimuli. The accurate determination of the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials using first principle methods is of paramount importance in condensed matter physics, computational chemistry, and material science. However, due to the exponential scaling of computational resources, incorporating such materials into classical computation frameworks becomes prohibitively expensive. In 2016, Bauer et al. proposed a hybrid quantum-classical approach to correlated materials Phys. Rev. X 6, 031045 (2016)}] that can efficiently tackle the electronic structure of complex correlated materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that approach to tackle the computational challenges associated with strongly correlated materials. By seamlessly integrating quantum computation into classical computers, we address the most computationally demanding aspect of the calculation, namely the computation of the Green's function, using a spin quantum processor. Furthermore, we realize a self-consistent determination of the single impurity Anderson model through a feedback loop between quantum and classical computations. A quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model from the metallic phase to the Mott insulator is observed as the strength of electron correlation increases. As the number of qubits with high control fidelity continues to grow, our experimental findings pave the way for solving even more complex models, such as strongly correlated crystalline materials or intricate molecules., Comment: 6 pages + appendices

A fundamental challenge in quantum thermodynamics is the exploration of inherent dimensional constraints in thermodynamic machines. In the context of two-level systems, the most compact refrigerator necessitates the involvement of three entities, operating under self-contained conditions that preclude the use of external work sources. Here, we build such a smallest refrigerator using a nuclear spin system, where three distinct two-level carbon-13 nuclei in the same molecule are involved to facilitate the refrigeration process. The self-contained feature enables it to operate without relying on net external work, and the unique mechanism sets this refrigerator apart from its classical counterparts. We evaluate its performance under varying conditions and systematically scrutinize the cooling constraints across a spectrum of scenarios, which sheds light on the interplay between quantum information and thermodynamics., Comment: 6 pages + appendices

In causal mediation analysis, the natural direct and indirect effects (natural effects) are nonparametrically unidentifiable in the presence of treatment-induced confounding, which motivated the development of randomized interventional analogues (RIAs) of the natural effects. The RIAs are easier to identify and widely used in practice. Applied researchers often interpret RIA estimates as if they were the natural effects, even though the RIAs could be poor proxies for the natural effects. This calls for practical and theoretical guidance on when the RIAs differ from or coincide with the natural effects, which this paper aims to address. We develop a novel empirical test for the divergence between the RIAs and the natural effects under the weak assumptions sufficient for identifying the RIAs and illustrate the test using the Moving to Opportunity Study. We also provide new theoretical insights on the relationship between the RIAs and the natural effects from a covariance perspective and a structural equation perspective. Additionally, we discuss previously undocumented connections between the natural effects, the RIAs, and estimands in instrumental variable analysis and Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests.

This paper addresses two prominent theses in social stratification research, the great equalizer thesis and Mare's (1980) school transition thesis. Both theses describe the role of an intermediate educational transition in the association between socioeconomic status and an outcome variable. However, the descriptive regularities of the two theses may be driven by differential selection into the intermediate transition, which prevents the two theses from having substantive interpretations. We propose a set of novel counterfactual slope estimands, which capture these theses under hypothetical interventions that eliminate the differential selection. We thereby construct selection-free tests for these theses. Compared with the existing literature, we are the first to explicitly provide nonparametric causal estimands, which enable us to conduct more principled analysis. We are also the first to develop flexible, efficient, and robust estimators for the two theses based on efficient influence functions. We apply our framework to a nationally representative dataset in the United States and re-evaluate the two theses. Findings from our selection-free tests suggest that the descriptive regularities are misleading for the substantive interpretation of the great equalizer thesis, but not for that of the school transition thesis. Additionally, the counterfactual slopes also provide a new framework for evaluating the inequality impacts of policy interventions.

We introduce a new nonparametric causal decomposition approach that identifies the mechanisms by which a treatment variable contributes to a group-based outcome disparity. Our approach distinguishes three mechanisms: group differences in 1) treatment prevalence, 2) average treatment effects, and 3) selection into treatment based on individual-level treatment effects. Our approach reformulates classic Kitagawa-Blinder-Oaxaca decompositions in causal and nonparametric terms, complements causal mediation analysis by explaining group disparities instead of group effects, and isolates conceptually distinct mechanisms conflated in recent random equalization decompositions. In contrast to all prior approaches, our framework uniquely identifies differential selection into treatment as a novel disparity-generating mechanism. Our approach can be used for both the retrospective causal explanation of disparities and the prospective planning of interventions to change disparities. We present both an unconditional and a conditional decomposition, where the latter quantifies the contributions of the treatment within levels of certain covariates. We develop nonparametric estimators that are $\sqrt{n}$-consistent, asymptotically normal, semiparametrically efficient, and multiply robust. We apply our approach to analyze the mechanisms by which college graduation causally contributes to intergenerational income persistence (the disparity in income attainment between parental income groups).

Topological quantum computation (TQC) is one of the most striking architectures that can realize fault-tolerant quantum computers. In TQC, the logical space and the quantum gates are topologically protected, i.e., robust against local disturbances. The topological protection, however, requires rather complicated lattice models and hard-to-manipulate dynamics; even the simplest system that can realize universal TQC--the Fibonacci anyon system--lacks a physical realization, let alone braiding the non-Abelian anyons. Here, we propose a disk model that can realize the Fibonacci anyon system, and construct the topologically protected logical spaces with the Fibonacci anyons. Via braiding the Fibonacci anyons, we can implement universal quantum gates on the logical space. Our proposal is platform-independent. As a demonstration, we implement a topological Hadamard gate on a logical qubit through a sequence of $15$ braiding operations of three Fibonacci anyons with merely $2$ nuclear spin qubits. The gate fidelity reaches 97.18% by randomized benchmarking. We further prove by experiment that the logical space and Hadamard gate are topologically protected: local disturbances due to thermal fluctuations result in a global phase only. Noise is ubiquitous in real quantum systems, leading to non-Hermitian quantum dynamics, and may affect the fundamental states of matter. Here we report in experiment a quantum simulation of the two-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) model using the nuclear magnetic resonance processor. Unlike the usual experiments using auxiliary qubits, we develop a stochastic average approach based on the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation to realize the non-Hermitian dissipative quantum dynamics, which has advantages in saving the quantum simulation sources and simplifies implementation of quantum gates. We demonstrate the stability of dynamical topology against weak noise, and observe two types of dynamical topological transitions driven by strong noise. Moreover, a region that the emergent topology is always robust regardless of the noise strength is observed. Our work shows a feasible quantum simulation approach for dissipative quantum dynamics with stochastic Schr\"odinger equation and opens a route to investigate non-Hermitian dynamical topological physics.

Nowadays, frequent pattern mining (FPM) on large graphs receives increasing attention, since it is crucial to a variety of applications, e.g., social analysis. Informally, the FPM problem is defined as finding all the patterns in a large graph with frequency above a user-defined threshold. However, this problem is nontrivial due to the unaffordable computational and space costs in the mining process. In light of this, we propose a cost-effective approach to mining near-optimal top-k patterns. Our approach applies a "level-wise" strategy to incrementally detect frequent patterns, hence is able to terminate as soon as top-k patterns are discovered. Moreover, we develop a technique to compute the lower bound of support with smart traverse strategy and compact data structures. Extensive experimental studies on real-life and synthetic graphs show that our approach performs well, i.e., it outperforms traditional counterparts in efficiency, memory footprint, recall and scalability.

Multi-object tracking (MOT) has made great progress in recent years, but there are still some problems. Most MOT algorithms follow tracking-by-detection framework, which separates detection and tracking into two independent parts. Early tracking-by-detection algorithms need to do two feature extractions for detection and tracking. Recently, some algorithms make the feature extraction into one network, but the tracking part still relies on data association and needs complex post-processing for life cycle management. Those methods do not combine detection and tracking well. In this paper, we present a novel network to realize joint multi-object detection and tracking in an end-to-end way, called Global Correlation Network (GCNet). Different from most object detection methods, GCNet introduces the global correlation layer for regression of absolute size and coordinates of bounding boxes instead of offsets prediction. The pipeline of detection and tracking by GCNet is conceptually simple, which does not need non-maximum suppression, data association, and other complicated tracking strategies. The detection of topological phases of matter becomes a central issue in recent years. Conventionally, the realization of a specific topological phase in condensed matter physics relies on probing the underlying surface band dispersion or quantum transport signature of a real material, which may be imperfect or even absent. On the other hand, quantum simulation offers an alternative approach to directly measure the topological invariant on a universal quantum computer. However, experimentally demonstrating high-dimensional topological phases remains a challenge due to the technical limitations of current experimental platforms. Here, we investigate the three-dimensional topological insulators in the AIII (chiral unitary) symmetry class which yet lack experimental realization. Using the nuclear magnetic resonance system, we experimentally demonstrate their topological properties, where a dynamical quenching approach is adopted and the dynamical bulk-boundary correspondence in the momentum space is observed. As a result, the topological invariants are measured with high precision on the band-inversion surface, exhibiting robustness to the decoherence effect. w-Projection is a wide-field imaging technique that is widely used in radio synthesis arrays. Processing the wide-field big data generated by the future Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will require significant updates to current methods to significantly reduce the time consumed on data processing. Data loading and gridding are found to be two major time-consuming tasks in w-projection. In this paper, we investigate two parallel methods of accelerating w-projection processing on multiple nodes: the hybrid Message Passing Interface (MPI) and Open Multi-Processing (OpenMP) method based on multicore Central Processing Units (CPUs) and the hybrid MPI and Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) method based on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Both methods are successfully employed and operated in various computational environments, confirming their robustness. The experimental results show that the total runtime of both MPI + OpenMP and MPI + CUDA methods is significantly shorter than that of single-thread processing. MPI + CUDA generally shows faster performance when running on multiple nodes than MPI + OpenMP, especially on large numbers of nodes. The single-precision GPU-based processing yields faster computation than the double-precision processing; while the single- and doubleprecision CPU-based processing shows consistent computational performance. The gridding time remarkably increases when the support size of the convolution kernel is larger than 8 and the image size is larger than 2,048 pixels.
