IntroductionTo reduce mortality, the Taiwan government has vigorously promoted free cancer screening and preventive health screening services. Cancers are usually advanced by the time they are discovered in the emergency department. Through this study, we aimed to understand the characteristics of cancer patients diagnosed through the emergency department and thus identify high-risk populations by comparing cancer staging and survival rates in patients diagnosed in the emergency department and those diagnosed in the non-emergency department.MethodsThe retrospective study enrolled a total of 389,043 patients over the age of 20 who were newly diagnosed with one of the five major cancers (including lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and oral cancer) between 2008 and 2017 and analyzed their diagnostic pathway, cancer stage at diagnosis, and survival time.ResultsOf the study participants, 59,423 patients (about 15.3%) were diagnosed with cancer through the emergency department. We found that a sizable proportion of older people and patients with low education and low incomes were diagnosed through emergency department visits, and those with a health condition comorbidity severity of 3 had the highest proportion diagnosed by the emergency department, advanced stages at diagnosis, and risk of death. These can be classified as high-risk groups. In addition, 76.4% of patients diagnosed in the emergency department had advanced cancer, and the risk of death was 1.46 times higher than that of patients diagnosed in the non-emergency department. Although cancer screening is available, it does not reduce the proportion of patients with advanced cancer who are diagnosed through or at the time of diagnosis in the emergency department.ConclusionsThe present study found that the government’s cancer screening did not affect the proportion or number of cancers diagnosed through emergency department visits. Therefore, the government should focus on more cancer screening, health education in high-risk groups, and strengthening the link between emergency and oncology departments to reduce the risk of death for patients diagnosed through emergency department visits.

Chlorophyll a fluorescence, a sensitive and cost-effective probe, is widely used in photosynthetic research. Its rapid phase, occurring within 1 second under intense illumination, displays complex O-J-I-P transients, providing valuable insights into various aspects of photosynthesis. In addition to employing experimental approaches to measure the rapid Fluorescence Induction (FI) kinetics, mathematical modeling serves as a crucial tool for understanding the underlying mechanisms that drive FI dynamics. However, the significant uncertainty and arbitrary nature of selecting model parameters amplify concerns about the effectiveness of modeling tools in aiding photosynthesis research. Therefore, there is a need to gain a deeper understanding of how these models operate and how arbitrary parameter choices may influence their outcomes. In this study, we employed the Morris method, a global Sensitivity Analysis (SA) tool, to assess the significance of rate constants employed in an existing fluorescence model, particularly those linked to the entire electron transport chain, in shaping the rapid FI dynamics. In summary, utilizing the insights gained from the Morris SA allows for targeted refinement of the photosynthesis model, thereby improving our understanding of the complex processes inherent in photosynthetic systems.

Fusing object detection techniques and stochastic variational inference, we proposed a new scheme for lightweight neural network models, which could simultaneously reduce model sizes and raise the inference speed. This technique was then applied in fast human posture identification. The integer-arithmetic-only algorithm and the feature pyramid network were adopted to reduce the computational complexity in training and to capture features of small objects, respectively. Features of sequential human motion frames (i.e., the centroid coordinates of bounding boxes) were extracted by the self-attention mechanism. With the techniques of Bayesian neural network and stochastic variational inference, human postures could be promptly classified by fast resolving of the Gaussian mixture model for human posture classification. The model took instant centroid features as inputs and indicated possible human postures in the probabilistic maps. Our model had better overall performance than the baseline model ResNet in mean average precision (32.5 vs. 34.6), inference speed (27 vs. 48 milliseconds), and model size (46.2 vs. 227.8 MB). The model could also alert a suspected human falling event about 0.66 s in advance.

Abstract Background The medicinal plant, Catharanthus roseus (C. roseus), accumulates a wide range of terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAs). Ethylene (ET) and methyl-jasmonate (MeJA) were previously reported as effective elicitors for the production of various valuable secondary metabolites of C. roseus, while a few ET or MeJA induced transcriptomic research is yet reported on this species. In this study, the de-novo transcriptome assembly of C. roseus is performed by using the next-generation sequencing technology. Results The result shows that phenolic biosynthesis genes respond specifically to ET in leaves, monoterpenoid biosynthesis genes respond specifically to MeJA in roots. By screening the database, 23 ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter partial sequences are identified in C. roseus. On this basis, more than 80 key genes that encode key enzymes (namely TIA pathway, transcriptional factor (TF) and candidate ABC transporter) of alkaloid synthesis in TIA biosynthetic pathways are chosen to explore the integrative responses to ET and MeJA at the transcriptional level. Our data indicated that TIA accumulation is strictly regulated by the TF ethylene responsive factor (ERF) and bHLH iridoid synthesis 1 (BIS1). The heatmap, combined with principal component analysis (PCA) of C. roseus, shows that ERF co-expression with ABC2 and ABC8 specific expression in roots affect the root-specific accumulation of vinblastine in C. roseus. On the contrast, BIS1 activities follow a similar pattern of ABC3 and CrTPT2 specific expression in leaves, which affects the leaf-specific accumulation of vindoline in C. roseus. Conclusions Results presented above illustrate that ethylene has a stronger effect than MeJA on TIA induction at both transcriptional and metabolite level. Furthermore, meta-analysis reveals that ERF and BIS1 form a positive feedback loop connecting two ABC transporters respectively and are actively involved in TIAs responding to ET and MeJA in C. roseus.

Solving high-temperature plastic mulching film-induced leaf burning in the first week during tobacco cultivation would take much time and effort. In the present study, the growth as well as the leaf sugar and nicotine contents of seedlings with or without leaf burning induced by high-temperature plastic mulching film were tested at two independent sites in 2015 and 2016 to identify the influence of leaf burning on seedling growth. The results showed that the growth of seedlings with leaf burning was improved with increased leaf area, leaf number and plant height compared to those without leaf burning, combined with an increased seedling survival rate at two sites in two years. In seedlings with leaf burning, the contents of fructose and glucose increased and peaked at 11:00 and 13:00 in the leaf and root, respectively, with an increased root nicotine content beginning at 13:00, highlighting the signalling role of sugars. Activities of antioxidant enzymes including peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were all increased in seedlings with leaf burning. More plant biomass was allocated to roots in seedlings with leaf burning with increased root volume compared to control seedlings, which might facilitate the absorption of water and nutrients from the soil. Our findings demonstrate that high-temperature plastic mulching film-induced leaf burning not inhibited but benefited seedling survival and growth, suggesting that the time and labour-consuming manual plucking of burnt leaves can be avoided during tobacco cultivation.

Increasing evidence supports the anti-estrogenic and/or anti-proliferative properties of luteolin, which is a natural flavonoid existing in herbs, vegetables and fruits. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for these effects are only partially explored. In the present study, estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-α) was identified as a potential molecular target for luteolin. Our data indicated that treatment with luteolin engendered suppression of ER-α protein and mRNA expression in ER-α-positive breast cancer cells. Y-box binding protein-1 (YB-1) is a known transcriptional regulator of ER-α expression. In this studies it was demonstrated that luteolin decreased YB-1 protein and mRNA expression. Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) is able to phosphorylate many downstream effectors that have the potential to regulate YB-1 transcription. We provided evidence for a mechanism by which luteolin suppressed YB-1 expression through the downregulation of ILK/Akt/STAT3-regulated Twist expression in ER-α-positive breast cancer cells. Our data also showed that luteolin inhibited cancer migration and invasion through the inhibition of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Taken together, these data indicate that the antitumorigenic effects of luteolin in ER-α-positive breast cancer cells may arise from its ability to reduce ER-α expression.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for approximately 85% of all lung cancers, and has highly metastatic capacity and poor prognosis. The anti-tumour activity and the corresponding signal pathways of spring Curcuma aromatica Salisb essential oil (CSEO) and autumn C. aromatica essential oil (CAEO) were evaluated. The results demonstrated that CAEO possessed more potent cytotoxicity than CSEO in NSLCL cells. CAEO induced apoptosis through the cleavage and activation of caspases 3, 8, 9, and poly (ADPribose) polymerase (PARP) in NCI-H1299 cells. After treatment with CAEO, pro-apoptosis protein Bax expression increased, and anti-apoptosis proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL expression decreased. In addition, CAEO could promote tumour suppressor protein p53 expression, inhibit the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and increase the phosphorylation of JNK1/2 and p38. CAEO treatment also inhibited Akt/NF-κB signal pathways in NCI-H1299 cells. In vivo experiments showed that CAEO significantly inhibited the growth of NSCLC in nude mice. Zingiberene (4.80 mg/g), β-sesquiphellandrene (1.88 mg/g) and turmerone (0.98 mg/g) were found in CAEO as potential active compounds. Thus, these results emphasize that the CAEO induced apoptosis and had a potential to become a new functional food ingredient for the prevention and treatment of NSCLC.

"Triple negative breast cancer" (TNBC) is associated with a higher rate and earlier time of recurrence and worse prognosis after recurrence. In this study, we aimed to examine the crosstalk between fibroblasts and TNBC cells. The fibroblasts were isolated from TNBC patients' tissue in tumor burden zones, distal normal zones and interface zones. The fibroblasts were indicated as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), normal zone fibroblasts (NFs) and interface zone fibroblasts (INFs). Our study found that INFs grew significantly faster than NFs and CAFs in vitro. The epithelial BT20 cells cultured with the conditioned medium of INFs (INFs-CM) and CAFs (CAFs-CM) showed more spindle-like shape and cell scattering than cultured with the conditioned medium of NFs (NFs-CM). These results indicated that factors secreted by INFs-CM or CAFs-CM could induce the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype in BT20 cells. Using an in vitro co-culture model, INFs or CAFs induced EMT and promoted cancer cell migration in BT20 cells. Interestingly, we found that emodin inhibited INFs-CM or CAFs-CM-induced EMT programming and phenotype in BT20 cells. Previous studies reported that CAFs and INFs-secreted TGF-β promoted human breast cancer cell proliferation, here; our results indicated that TGF-β initiated EMT in BT20 cells. Pretreatment with emodin significantly suppressed the TGF-β-induced EMT and cell migration in BT20 cells. These results suggest that emodin may be used as a novel agent for the treatment of TNBC.

Advances in biotechnology have resulted in large-scale studies of DNA methylation. A differentially methylated region (DMR) is a genomic region with multiple adjacent CpG sites that exhibit different methylation statuses among multiple samples. Many so-called "supervised" methods have been established to identify DMRs between two or more comparison groups. Methods for the identification of DMRs without reference to phenotypic information are, however, less well studied. An alternative "unsupervised" approach was proposed, in which DMRs in studied samples were identified with consideration of nature dependence structure of methylation measurements between neighboring probes from tiling arrays. Through simulation study, we investigated effects of dependencies between neighboring probes on determining DMRs where a lot of spurious signals would be produced if the methylation data were analyzed independently of the probe. In contrast, our newly proposed method could successfully correct for this effect with a well-controlled false positive rate and a comparable sensitivity. By applying to two real datasets, we demonstrated that our method could provide a global picture of methylation variation in studied samples. Complex diseases are typically caused by combinations of molecular disturbances that vary widely among different patients. Endophenotypes, a combination of genetic factors associated with a disease, offer a simplified approach to dissect complex trait by reducing genetic heterogeneity. Because molecular dissimilarities often exist between patients with indistinguishable disease symptoms, these unique molecular features may reflect pathogenic heterogeneity. To detect molecular dissimilarities among patients and reduce the complexity of high-dimension data, we have explored an endophenotype-identification analytical procedure that combines non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and adjusted rand index (ARI), a measure of the similarity of two clusterings of a data set. To evaluate this procedure, we compared it with a commonly used method, principal component analysis with k-means clustering (PCA-K). A simulation study with gene expression dataset and genotype information was conducted to examine the performance of our procedure and PCA-K. The results showed that NMF mostly outperformed PCA-K. Additionally, we applied our endophenotype-identification analytical procedure to a publicly available dataset containing data derived from patients with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). NMF distilled information associated with 1,116 transcripts into three metagenes and three molecular subtypes (MS) for patients in the LOAD dataset: MS1 (n1=80), MS2 (n2=73), and MS3 (n3=23). ARI was then used to determine the most representative transcripts for each metagene; 123, 89, and 71 metagene-specific transcripts were identified for MS1, MS2, and MS3, respectively. These metagene-specific transcripts were identified as the endophenotypes. Our results showed that 14, 38, 0, and 28 candidate susceptibility genes listed in AlzGene database were found by all patients, MS1, MS2, and MS3, respectively. Moreover, we found that MS2 might be a normal-like subtype. Our proposed procedure provides an alternative approach to investigate the pathogenic mechanism of disease and better understand the relationship between phenotype and genotype.

We investigated potassium (K) accumulation characteristics and expression of K metabolism related genes in one high-K variety (ND202) and a common variety (NC89) of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Results showed that K accumulation and leaf K content in ND202 were higher than those in NC89. The distribution rate and K accumulation in the leaves of ND202 increased significantly, while the distribution rate in the roots and stems had lower values. In addition, the maximum K accumulation rate and high-speed K accumulation duration in ND202 were found to be better than those in NC89. The expression of NKT1 in the upper and middle leaves of ND202 had an advantage, and the relative expression of NtKC1 and NtTPK1 in both the upper and middle leaves, as well as the roots, was also significantly upregulated. Conversely, the expression of NTRK1 in the lower leaves and roots of ND202 was weaker. ND202 had significantly greater expression levels of NtHAK1 than NC89 in the upper and middle leaves and roots; moreover, the expression of NtKT12 in the upper leaves and roots of ND202 was also higher. In comparison with common varieties, high-K varieties had a stronger ability to absorb and accumulate K. They also possessed higher expression of K+ channel- and transporter-related genes and showed a superior K accumulation rate and longer duration of high-speed K accumulation. DNA methylation is one of the most important epigenetic mechanisms, and participates in the pathogenic processes of many diseases. Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in the genome have been reported and implicated in a number of different diseases, tissues and cell types, and are associated with gene expression levels. Therefore, identification of DMRs is one of the most critical and fundamental issues in dissecting the disease etiologies. Based on bisulfite conversion, advances in sequence- and array-based technologies have helped investigators study genome-wide DNA methylation. Many methods have been developed to detect DMRs, and they have revolutionized our understanding of DNA methylation and provided new insights into its role in diverse biological functions. According to data and region types, we discuss various methods in detecting DMRs, their utility and limitations comprehensively. The existing question whether ethylene is involved in the modulation of salt-induced cell death to mediate plant salt tolerance is important for understanding the salt tolerance mechanisms. Here, we employed Arabidopsis plants to study the possible role of ethylene in salt-induced growth inhibition and programmed cell death (PCD) profiles. The root length, DNA ladder and cell death indicated by Evan's blue detection were measured by compared to the control or salt-stressed seedlings. Secondly, the protoplasts isolated from plant leaves and dyed with Annexin V-FITC were subjected to flow cytometric (FCM) assay. Our results showed that ethylene works effectively in seedling protoplasts, antagonizing salt-included root retardation and restraining cell death both in seedlings or protoplasts. Due to salinity, the entire or partial insensitivity of ethylene signaling resulted in an elevated levels of cell death in ein2-5 and ein3-1 plants and the event were amended in ctr1-1 plants after salt treatment. The subsequent experiment with exogenous ACC further corroborated that ethylene could modulate salt-induced PCD process actively. Plant Bcl-2-associated athanogene (BAG) family genes are recently identified to play an extensive role in plant PCD processes ranging from growth, development to stress responses and even cell death. Our result showed that salinity alone significantly suppressed the transcripts of BAG6, BAG7 and addition of ACC in the saline solution could obviously re-activate BAG6 and BAG7 expressions, which might play a key role to inhibit the salt-induced cell death. In summary, our research implies that ethylene and salinity antagonistically control BAG family-, ethylene-, and senescence-related genes to alleviate the salt-induced cell death. Background Genome-wide association studies have been successful in identifying common genetic variants for human diseases. However, much of the heritable variation associated with diseases such as Parkinson's disease remains unknown suggesting that many more risk loci are yet to be identified. Rare variants have become important in disease association studies for explaining missing heritability. Methods for detecting this type of association require prior knowledge on candidate genes and combining variants within the region. These methods may suffer from power loss in situations with many neutral variants or causal variants with opposite effects. Results We propose a method capable of scanning genetic variants to identify the region most likely harbouring disease gene with rare and/or common causal variants. Our method assigns a score at each individual variant based on our scoring system. It uses aggregate scores to identify the region with disease association. We evaluate performance by simulation based on 1000 Genomes sequencing data and compare with three commonly used methods. We use a Parkinson's disease case-control dataset as a model to demonstrate the application of our method. Our method has better power than CMC and WSS and similar power to SKAT-O with wellcontrolled type I error under simulation based on 1000 Genomes sequencing data. In real data analysis, we confirm the association of α-synuclein gene (SNCA) with Parkinson's disease (p = 0.005). We further identify association with hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2, p = 0.028) and kringle containing transmembrane protein 1 (KREMEN1, p = 0.006). KREMEN1 is associated with Wnt signalling pathway which has been shown to play an important role for neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease. Conclusions Our method is time efficient and less sensitive to inclusion of neutral variants and direction effect of causal variants. It can narrow down a genomic region or a chromosome to a disease associated region. Using Parkinson's disease as a model, our method not only confirms association for a known gene but also identifies two genes previously found by other studies. In spite of many existing methods, we conclude that our method serves as an efficient alternative for exploring genomic data containing both rare and common variants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social media, especially social networking, are rapidly becoming very popular online activities among people all over the world. The use of online media is causing several workplace-related problems. Therefore, in this study we investigated the associations between social media usage behavior, personal background, and work values. Using office workers for the research sample and Facebook as the social medium for investigation, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to dimensionalize the constructs of social media usage behavior and work values. The results of bivariate correlation suggest that personal background and social media usage behavior are correlated and social media usage behavior and work values are partially correlated. The article presents a study which investigates the effects of perceived value on Taiwanese customer intention to use the Internet as a retailing platform. The study uses a total of 295 usable survey responses which were collected in the major commuter district of Taipei, Taiwan. Results show significant impact of both functional and epistemic values on information collection and order placement.

Background: Association testing is a powerful tool for identifying disease susceptibility genes underlying complex diseases. Technological advances have yielded a dramatic increase in the density of available genetic markers, necessitating an increase in the number of association tests required for the analysis of disease susceptibility genes. As such, multiple-tests corrections have become a critical issue. However the conventional statistical corrections on locus-specific multiple tests usually result in lower power as the number of markers increases. Alternatively, we propose here the application of the longest significant run (LSR) method to estimate a region-specific p-value to provide an index for the most likely candidate region. Results: An advantage of the LSR method relative to procedures based on genotypic data is that only p-value data are needed and hence can be applied extensively to different study designs. In this study the proposed LSR method was compared with commonly used methods such as Bonferroni's method and FDR controlling method. We found that while all methods provide good control over false positive rate, LSR has much better power and false discovery rate. In the authentic analysis on psoriasis and asthma disease data, the LSR method successfully identified important candidate regions and replicated the results of previous association studies. Conclusion: The proposed LSR method provides an efficient exploratory tool for the analysis of sequences of dense genetic markers. The potential of online games to become a major global business and the existence of limited related references led to the current study. In this study, Rogers's diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory is applied to investigate the principles for the adoption of online games in Taiwan. The findings suggest that relative advantages and compatibility both have a significant effect on the adoption of online games for purposes of amusement, with the former being more important for early gamers and the latter being regarded as more critical for later gamers. In this study the relationship between extroversion and leisure motivation in Taiwanese fitness center members was examined. A systematic sampling (one out of ten entering the fitness center) produced 424 usable questionnaires for the final data analysis. The findings reveal that extroversion is positively correlated with the four leisure motivation dimensions: Intellectual, Social, Competence-mastery and Stimulus-avoidance. The use of the international franchise system on a global scale provides impetus for academic interests investigating such an issue. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research regarding its stage development. In this research, a stage model, termed the "stage model of the international franchise system development" is proposed, to provide insight into the process of implementing the international franchise system successfully. The development of the proposed model refers to related literature and is based on case studies from five international franchisors in Taiwan. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Crohn's disease (CD) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by diverse clinical phenotypes. Childhood-onset CD has been described as a more aggressive phenotype. Genetic and immune factors may influence disease phenotype and clinical course. We examined the association of immune responses to microbial antigens with disease behavior and prospectively determined the influence of immune reactivity on disease progression in pediatric CD patients. METHODS: Sera were collected from 196 pediatric CD cases and tested for immune responses: anti-I2, anti-outer membrane protein C (anti-OmpC), anti-CBir1 flagellin (anti-CBir1), and anti- Saccharomyces-cerevisiae (ASCA) using ELISA. Associations between immune responses and clinical phenotype were evaluated. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients (28%) developed internal penetrating and/or stricturing (IP/S) disease after a median follow-up of 18 months. Both anti-OmpC ( p < 0.0006) and anti-I2 ( p < 0.003) were associated with IP/S disease. The frequency of IP/S disease increased with increasing number of immune responses ( p trend = 0.002). The odds of developing IP/S disease were highest in patients positive for all four immune responses (OR (95% CI): 11 (1.5–80.4); p= 0.03). Pediatric CD patients positive for ≥1 immune response progressed to IP/S disease sooner after diagnosis as compared to those negative for all immune responses ( p < 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The presence and magnitude of immune responses to microbial antigens are significantly associated with more aggressive disease phenotypes among children with CD. This is the first study to prospectively demonstrate that the time to develop a disease complication in children is significantly faster in the presence of immune reactivity, thereby predicting disease progression to more aggressive disease phenotypes among pediatric CD patients. To evaluate linkage evidence for body mass index (BMI) using both cross-sectional and longitudinal data, we performed genome-wide multipoint linkage analyses on subjects who had complete data at four selected time points (initial, 8th, 12th, and 16th year following the initial visit) from the Framingham Heart Study. The cross-sectional measures included BMI at each of the four selected time points and the longitudinal measure was the within-subject mean of BMI at the above four time points. Using the variance components method, we consistently observed the maximum LOD score out of the genome scan using BMI at each time point and the mean of BMI between 049xd2 and GATA71H05 on chromosome 16. The highest LOD score (3.0) was at time point 1, while the lowest (1.9) was at time point 4. We also observed other suggestive linkages on chromosome 6, 10, and 18 at time point 1 only. The longitudinal measure we studied (mean of BMI) did not provide greater power to identify a positive linkage than some of the cross-sectional measures (e.g., time point 1). The changing of linkage evidence over time provided some insights on the variation of genetic effect on BMI with aging. There may be a QTL on chromosome 16 that contributes to BMI and this locus, and maybe others, is more likely to affect BMI during early adulthood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Framingham Heart Study is a very successful longitudinal research for cardiovascular diseases. The completion of a 10-cM genome scan in Framingham families provided an opportunity to evaluate linkage using longitudinal data. Several descriptive traits based on simulated longitudinal data from the Genetic Analysis Workshop 13 (GAW13) were generated, and linkage analyses were performed for these traits. We compared the power of detecting linkage for baseline and slope genes in the simulated data of GAW13 using these traits. Crohn disease (CD) exhibits a 2-4-fold increased frequency in Jews as compared with other ethnic/racial groups. Three coding variants of the NOD2/CARD15 have been reported as independent disease-predisposing mutations (DPMs), but these were found in only 30%-40% of patients with CD and could not account for all the linkage between CD and the IBD1 locus. The aim of the present study was to explore whether additional DPMs at the IBD1 locus exist in the high-risk Jewish group. Sixty-four Ashkenazi Jewish and 147 non-Jewish white families were studied. Six microsatellite markers spanning IBD1 were genotyped for linkage analysis in subgroups stratified on NOD2/CARD15 DPM status. SNPs in NOD2/CARD15 (R702W, G908R, 1007fs, and S268P) were then geno-typed in family and independent case-control samples. On the basis of initial results, sequencing was done on NOD2/CARD15-translated regions in 12 Jewish individuals. Subsequently, a new NOD2/CARD15 variant was genotyped and analyzed. After excluding the influence of the three DPMs, significant linkage of IBD1 to CD in Jews remained with two peaks at D16S403 (mean allele sharing [MAS] = 0.70] and D16S411 (MAS = 0.59). Further, we observed an increased frequency of a haplotype carrying only the 268S variant in Jewish patients (OR = 3.13, P = .0023) but not in non-Jews, suggesting the existence of a Jewish-specific additional disease-predisposing factor on this haplotype. Sequencing of this haplotype revealed a new variant (IVS8+158; JW1). The 268S-JW1 combination exhibited a further increased risk (OR = 5.75, P = .0005) and the highest population-attributable risk (15.1%) for CD among reported DPMs in Jews. In Ashkenazi Jews, unrecognized population-specific predisposing factor(s) exist on the 268S-JW1 haplotype at the IBD1 locus. This study was designed to uncover the impact of neuroticism on leisure satisfaction based on online games in Taiwan, the country that has the second largest online game-playing market in the world. A systematic sampling produced 500 usable questionnaires for the final data analysis. The findings indicate a negative relationship between neuroticism and leisure satisfaction.
