Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), also known as Hughes syndrome, is an acquired autoimmune and procoagulant condition that predisposes individuals to recurrent thrombotic events and obstetric complications. Central is the role of three types of antiphospholipid antibodies that target phospholipid-binding proteins: lupus anticoagulant (LAC), anti-β2-glycoprotein I (β2-GPI-Ab), and anti-cardiolipin (aCL). Together with clinical data, these antibodies are the diagnostic standard. However, the diagnosis of APS in older adults may be challenging and, in the diagnostic workup of thromboembolic complications, it is an underestimated etiology. The therapeutic management of APS requires distinguishing two groups with differential risks of thromboembolic complications. The standard therapy is based on low-dose aspirin in the low-risk group and vitamin K antagonists in the high-risk group. The value of direct oral anticoagulants is currently controversial. The potential role of monoclonal antibodies is investigated. For example, rituximab is currently recommended in catastrophic antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. Research is ongoing on other monoclonal antibodies, such as daratumumab and obinutuzumab. This narrative review illustrates the pathophysiological mechanisms of APS, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular complications and their impact in older adults. Turf grasses play a crucial role in enhancing the beauty and usability of landscapes, gardens, parks, and sports facilities due to their functional and aesthetic properties. However, various unfavourable conditions, such as plant disorders and environmental pressures, can compromise their amenity value. Ongoing research aims to identify natural remedies that improve the quality and resilience of these grasses. A study was conducted at the Experimental Station of the Agricultural University of Krakow (50°07′ N, 20°05′ E) to evaluate the practical value of the turf produced by seeding of the 'Super Lawn' grass mixture. The experiment involved applying a spray containing oligogalacturonides at two doses: 1.0 and 2.0 dm3∙ha−1, along with a commercial fungicide. The traits were analysed using a 9-point scale. Plants in variant III (treated with the higher dose of oligogalacturonides) and variant IV (treated with the commercial fungicide) exhibited the highest aesthetic and functional values. The application of oligogalacturonides and a commercial fungicide resulted in a decrease in plant diseases. The treatment area showed a reduction in pink snow mould (Microdochium nivale) and leaf spot incidence compared to the control area. Variant II showed enhanced outcomes with the application of 1.0 dm3∙ha−1 of the preparation. In this area, the plant canopy had greater coverage, and the plants demonstrated increased resistance to pink snow mould and leaf spot compared to the plants in the control area. The use of commercial fungicide was found to be more effective than applying oligogalacturonides. Treatment of plants with mineral-organic concentrates has developed intensively in recent years. Fertilizers containing, among others, humus, L-amino acids, vitamins, chelates and metal complexes, macro-, micro- and meso-elements, organic matter and humic acids from the top organic layer of leonardite coal have a positive effect on plant growth and quality and seed yield. An experiment was conducted between 2019 and 2022 at the University of Agriculture in Kraków, in which the impact of mineral-organic concentrate on the seed yield and quality of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) 2N Bokser (Hodowla Roślin Grunwald Ltd. Grupa IHAR, Grunwa, Poland) was determined. As part of the experiment, plants were sprayed with a mineral-organic product in three different doses: 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 L·ha−1. The following parameters were examined: the number of generative shoots, the length of the flag leaf, seed yield, germination capacity and the weight of one thousand seeds. It turned out that the application of the concentrate with 3 L·ha−1 and 2 L·ha−1 led to a significant increase in the number of generative shoots and in seed yield, compared to control. In addition, seed germination capacity of fertilized plants was higher, with the greatest increase after the application of 3 L·ha−1. Moreover, the average weight of one thousand seeds was significantly higher in fertilized plants, compared to the control, and the largest increase was recorded in response to the highest dose. Here is reported the synthesis of a magnetic phosphorus-containing adsorbent decorated with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and its application for vortex assisted solid phase extraction of lead in water, cigarettes and soil. The adsorbent was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. A high-resolution continuum source flame atomic absorption spectrometer (HR-CS FAAS) was used for the quantification of lead. All factors affecting the extraction efficiency including the solution pH, adsorbent dose, sample volume, vortex time, and elution protocols were optimized. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were determined to be 0.05 µg L−1 and 0.18 µg L−1, respectively. The preconcentration and enhancement factors were 20 and 18. Validation was performed using TMDA 64.3 fortified water and INCT-OBTL-5 tobacco leaves certified reference materials with satisfactory recoveries. The unique features of poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA), such as its sensitivity to external stimuli like pH and the presence of tertiary amine groups that can be easily quaternized to introduce antibacterial properties, make it a promising platform for biomedical applications. In this contribution, a facile, cost‐effective, and ecological procedure for controlled grafting of PDMAEMA brushes from a glass surface, both in mL and µL scale, is developed. This concept involves utilizing an aqueous solution of sunflower honey as a source of reducing sugars to accelerate surface‐initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. The PDMAEMA chains covalently grafted to the glass surface are then quaternized to form an antibacterial film. The thickness of the polymeric brush layer is determined by atomic force microscopy, while the chemical composition is analyzed by time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Water contact angle measurements demonstrate the pH‐sensitivity of PDMAEMA pointing out the potential application of the prepared material as smart surfaces. Furthermore, the antibacterial tests against Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria strains are performed. The protein adsorption is used to evaluate the biocompatibility of the prepared surfaces. Universities and research institutes more and more often resort to promotion tools up till now used mainly in business. Omnipresent market competition has reached also the area of science, where more and more often the fight for students and money for scientific research takes place. Competition among science institutions is additionally stimulated by demographic factors - the gradual aging of the European society. As data from the Central Statistical Office show, the number of peopled aged 19-24 in Poland will drop from 2,817,000 in 2015 to 2,135,000 in 2025. The reduction of the number of young people will substantially boost competition between universities. Their success, similarly as success in business will depend to an ever greater extent on the quality of conducted marketing activities. Education and research have become a product which, just like any other product, has to "fight" for the client.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exacerbates intravascular thrombosis that occurs in the coronary artery in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Aim: To analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the application and effect of thrombectomy in STEMI patients. Material and methods: 29915 STEMI patients were analyzed, of whom 3139 (10.5%) underwent thrombectomy. COVID-19 (+) was reported in 311 (10.8%). The clinical characteristics and management of STEMI in COVID-19 (+) and COVID-19 (-) patients were compared. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed in search of factors influencing thrombectomy. Results: COVID-19 (+) patients had higher Killip class (IV class; n = 33 (12.31%) vs. n = 138 (5.84%); p < 0.0001) and cardiac arrest at baseline was more frequent in this group (n = 25 (8.04%) vs. n = 137 (4.84%); p = 0.016). Thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) 3 after percutaneous coronary intervention was less frequent (n = 248 (80.52%) vs. n = 2388 (87.19%); p = 0.001) in the COVID-19 (-) group. Periprocedural mortality was similar in both groups (n = 28 (0.99%) vs. n = 4 (1.29%); p = 0.622). In multivariable regression analysis COVID-19 increased the risk of thrombectomy (OR = 1.23; 97.5% CI: 1.05-1.43; p = 0.001). Conclusions: STEMI patients undergoing aspiration thrombectomy who were COVID-19 (+) were more likely to be in a severe clinical condition (higher Killip class, more frequent cardiac arrest before the procedure) than COVID-19 (-) patients. Despite more intensive antiplatelet and anticoagulant treatment, PCI procedures were less likely to result in an optimal TIMI 3 effect. Multi-component fertilization has been found to have effects on grass metabolism, such as the stimulation of life processes and the reduction of adverse environmental conditions and pathogens. The research aimed to determine the bonitation value (assessment of the value in use) of turfgrass under the influence of using a multi-ingredient fertilizer. The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Station of the University of Agriculture in Krakow (Poland). The solution was applied through foliar application at three rates: 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 L·ha−1. This fertilizer contains essential minerals and growth stimulants. An increase in the concentration of the test fertilizer used for spraying was associated with increased effectiveness. The plants with the highest dose of the multi-component fertilizer (treatment III) were characterized by the highest aesthetic values. The use of the concentrate reduced the occurrence of fungal plant diseases. Compared to control plants, 13% less snow mold infection and 25% fewer brown leaf spots were found. Satisfactory effects were also obtained on objects where mineral-organic concentrate was applied at a dose of 2.0 L·ha−1 (treatment II). Plants that received Treatment II and III resulted in 9% less snow mold and 15% less brown leaf spot compared to controls. In the object with the highest concentration dose (treatment III), the green index (NDVI) was also higher by 8% and the leaf greenness index (SPAD) by 7% compared to the plants from the control objects. The research carried out at the Experimental Station of the University of Agriculture in Krakow aimed to assess the utility value of the turf of a lawn sown with the "Super Trawnik" lawn mixture. The experimental factor was spraying the turf with an amino acid preparation in the form of the AMINO ULTRA Fe-20 fertilizer in three doses: 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 dm3·ha−1. The iron in the tested preparation is complexed with glycine, a natural plant transporter of microelements. A total of 60 g (variant I), 100 g (variant II), and 140 g (variant III) Fe·ha–1 were applied accordingly. The assessment of the examined features was performed based on a nine-point scale. The highest aesthetic and functional values were characteristic of the grass in sites with the highest dose of complexed iron (variant III). The applied fertilization reduced the occurrence of plant diseases. Compared to the plants from the control groups, infestation with snow mold was 14% lower, and the occurrence of brown leaf blotch was lower by 16%. Satisfactory results were also obtained at the sites where the preparation was applied at a dose of 0.5 dm3·ha−1 (variant II). At these sites, a higher, more favorably assessed compactness and higher resistance to snow mold and brown leaf spots were found compared to the plants from the control groups. The major finding of this work is that applying a higher dose of foliar iron fertilizer complexed with glycine allows one to obtain a high-quality lawn in terms of visual and functional features. Soil and air pollution are main problems posing a serious threat to human health. Traditional physical and chemical soil remediation methods affect the soil ecosystem and are rather costly. Since the main purpose of soil remediation is not only to remove pollutants but also to restore soil health, the method of phytoremediation is becoming extremely relevant. Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and natural process of removing pollutants from the environment. Cleaning up contaminated sites and enabling re-use without harming future users requires the implementation of environmentally friendly and economically attractive technologies. Phytoremediation does not adversely affect the structure and biological life of the soil. Concerning on-site cleaning in situ. Hyperaccumulator plants can accumulate heavy metals from the soil, which is the so-called phytoextraction. The ability of trees and shrubs to effectively remove solid particles from the air has also been proven. However, it is not always possible to grow large plants in polluted areas. Therefore, the main goal of the research was to explore previous studies on the phytoremediation capability of herbaceous plants, in particular, their phytoextraction capacity. Another major issue was to study the main methods of improving plant phytoextraction. The results obtained show that grass can be a good solution for natural ecosystem cleanup. COVID-19 causes thromboembolic complications that affect the patient's prognosis. COVID-19 vaccines significantly improve the prognosis for the course of the infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impacts of patient characteristics, including COVID-19 vaccinations, on perioperative mortality in acute coronary syndrome in Poland during the pandemic. We analyzed the data of 243,515 patients from the National Registry of Invasive Cardiology Procedures (Ogólnopolski Rejestr Procedur Kardiologii Inwazyjnej [ORPKI]). In this group, 7407 patients (21.74%) had COVID-19. The statistical analysis was based on a neural network that was verified by the random forest method. In 2020, the most significant impact on prognosis came from a diagnosis of unstable angina, a short period (<2 h) from pain occurrence to first medical contact, and a history of stroke. In 2021, the most significant factors were pre-hospital cardiac arrest, female sex, and a short period (<2 h) from first medical contact to coronary angiography. After adjusting for a six-week lag, a diagnosis of unstable angina and psoriasis were found to be relevant in the data from 2020, while in 2021, it was the time from the pain occurrence to the first medical contact (2–12 h) in non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction and the time from first contact to balloon inflation (2–12 h) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. The number of vaccinations was one of the least significant factors. COVID-19 vaccination does not directly affect perioperative prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Due to the need to diversify energy sources and transform the energy system and its decarbonization, new paths for obtaining raw materials are being sought. One of the potential options is to increase the use of grasses' share in bioenergy production, which has a significant area potential. However, the diversified chemical composition of grasses and their anatomical heterogeneity mean that, between the various cultivars and species, the parameters determining their energetic usefulness may differ significantly, hence the key is to know the appropriate parameters at the variety level of a given species in order to effectively carry out the combustion process. In this experiment, a total of 23 varieties of seven grass species (Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), Red Fescue (Festuca rubra L.), Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Meadow Fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.), Timothy (Phleum pratense L.), Common Bent (Agrostis capillaris L.), Sheep Fescue (Festuca ovina L.), which had not yet been evaluated in terms of energy utilization, were tested. Proximate analysis showed the average ash content was in the range of 5.73–8.31%, the content of volatile matter in the range of 70.99–82.29% and the content of fixed carbon in the range of 5.96–17.19%. Higher heating value and lower heating value of grasses ranged from 16,548–18,616 kJ∙kg−1, 15,428–17,453 kJ∙kg−1, respectively. The Sheep Fescue turned out to be the most useful species for combustion. It has been shown that there may be statistically significant differences in the parameters determining their combustion suitability between the various varieties of a given species of grass. Therefore the major finding of this work shows that it is necessary to need to know theparameters of a given variety is necessary to optimize the combustion process and maintain the full energy efficiency of the system (especially lower heating value). The high stability and conductivity of 3,4-disubstituted polythiophenes such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) make them attractive candidates for commercial applications. However, next-generation nanoelectronic devices require novel macromolecular strategies for the precise synthesis of advanced polymer structures as well as their arrangement. In this report, we present a synthetic route to make ladder-like polymer brushes with poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT)-conjugated chains. The brushes were prepared via a self-templating surface-initiated technique (ST-SIP) that combines the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of bifunctional ProDOT-based monomers and subsequent oxidative polymerization of the pendant ProDOT groups in the parent brushes. The brushes prepared in this way were characterized by grazing-angle FTIR, XPS spectroscopy, and AFM. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements were used to extract the information about the structure and effective conjugation length of PProDOT-based chains. Stability tests performed in ambient conditions and under exposure to standardized solar light revealed the remarkable stability of the obtained materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim of the study: To assess the occurrence of cardiac arrhythmias caused by high doses of levothyroxine in patients with thyroid cancer with subclinical hyperthyroidism. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 98 women divided into three groups according to plasma thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration: <0.1 μU/mL, 0.1-0.39 μU/mL, or 0.4-4.0 μU/mL (control group). All participants underwent laboratory tests and an electrocardiography (ECG) Holter test to assess their heart rate and the occurrence of arrhythmias. Statistical analysis assessed differences between groups in all clinical parameters and factors influencing the occurrence of arrhythmias. Results: There were no differences between groups in the maximum, average, or minimum heart rate or in the incidence of the studied cardiac arrhythmias. Heart rate in women with a TSH concentration of <0.1 μU/mL depended on age and the presence of arterial hypertension, and heart rate in women with a TSH concentration of 0.4-4.0 μU/mL depended on free triiodothyronine concentration and the presence of arterial hypertension; no relationship was identified for women with a TSH concentration of 0.1-0.39 μU/mL. One-way logistic regression analysis did not identify any factors influencing the occurrence of arrhythmias. Conclusions: While maintaining normal free triiodothyronine levels, the use of suppressive doses of levothyroxine after thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer does not induce clinically significant arrhythmias or affect average heart rate.
