Heritage-making's intrinsic dissonance has been thoroughly established in the field of critical heritage studies, and yet it is a reality that continues to be obscured in heritage practice in settler colonial cities. Authorised heritage discourse continues to project existing state-led systems of heritage-making as a self-evident 'public good' for current and future generations. In settler colonial cities, this increasingly includes attempts to incorporate Indigenous views and values into its framing. However, existing statutory processes that uphold normative approaches prove resilient to change. Continued prioritisation of tangible artefact amid private property rights impairs the heritage field's ability to acknowledge alternative possibilities and to genuinely engage in decolonising transformation. This paper examines three cases where heritage dissonance has erupted into protest and protection action outside of the authorised heritage discourse: the Old Swan Brewery in Perth, Western Australia; Ihumātao in Auckland, New Zealand; and the West Berkeley Shellmound in Berkeley, California. It analyses the contestation of values that led to protest action, what 'authorised' attempts were made to heritagise each case and to what result. In so doing, the paper demonstrates how existing processes of statutory heritage-making continue to be inadequate for Indigenous and emerging heritage aspirations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assessing tourists' social media perceptions is crucial in today's digital age. Due to its industrial reputation, Johor Bahru, Malaysia, has been overlooked for heritage tourism. This data mining study examines tourists' experiences and motivations for visiting Johor Bahru's heritage buildings of 2,369 Google Review and Tripadvisor comments using web crawlers scripted in Python. The content analysis identified six themes associated with tourist motivation: activity, accessibility, diversity, attachment, inclusivity, and appearance. Even though their aesthetics are subdued, Johor Bahru's public historic sites thrive on accessibility and active activities, unlike magnificent royal edifices. Despite their architectural value, royal structures attracted fewer tourists due to the absence of diversity, inclusivity, and activities and restrictive measures. Maintaining the city's legacy and architectural identity requires highlighting these buildings. This study accentuates social media-driven popular views. The findings may encourage local authorities and stakeholders to strengthen Johor Bahru's identity and promote heritage tourism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Schools provide strategic resources for urban sustainability. An international, interdisciplinary research agenda documents the social and ecological benefits of living in green or re-naturalised schoolyards, a hybrid format of urban nature-based solutions. Focussing on low- and middle-income countries, where implementation lags, this paper addresses the challenges of replicating and scaling successful pilots. A better understanding of capacity building challenges is crucial, considering that schools face several concurrent challenges, including historical preservation of heritage buildings, universal access provision, and infrastructure failure in ageing facilities. This study presents primary evidence from action research to build and promote living schoolyards in Argentina, structured as a comparative case study of attempts to co-develop yards with two schools in Buenos Aires. One was an older school with historical preservation status; the other was a more modern, larger school with relative heritage value. Findings show contrastive outcomes. Our programme advanced only in the former. Historical preservation regulations posed relatively manageable contingencies, whereas insurmountable obstacles came from poor general maintenance and governmental risk aversion. Concluding remarks make suggestions on how to co-design projects with communities to synergise heritage schemes, creatively fix infrastructure deficits, and stir a mindset shift for decision-makers to understand and value urban re-greening. The popularity of must-see tourism destinations raises concerns about negative impacts including pollution, vandalism, and overcrowding in cultural heritage sites and the surrounding landscape. To address these challenges, understanding visitors' choice behavior and motivations is essential. This study aims to identify visitor segments based on their location choice and formulate policy recommendations to address overtourism challenges by examining visitors' choice behavior in a stated choice experiment. It provides evidence-based policy suggestions for mitigating mass tourism effects. The choice experiment was implemented in an online survey which was completed by a sample of 437 individuals who had paid a visit to Amsterdam in recent years. The results shed light on how individuals trade-off location attributes in making a choice between heritage destinations. A latent class analysis revealed three segments which can be labeled as cultural-attraction seekers, selective sightseers, and city-life lovers. The results show that crowdedness and entrance fees for additional experiences significantly influence visitors' location choices across all segments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Las transformaciones en las ciudades producidas desde el inicio de la revolución industrial son una de las principales amenazas para la salvaguarda del patrimonio urbano. Estas circunstancias han demandado la elaboración de estrategias y nuevos enfoques orientados a lograr un desarrollo sustentable del patrimonio cultural. Al respecto, en las últimas décadas el vínculo entre el patrimonio cultural y las diferentes dimensiones de la sustentabilidad ocupa uno de los puntos centrales de la agenda patrimonial de organizaciones nacionales e internacionales, así como de investigadores de todo el mundo. De las diferentes dimensiones de la sustentabilidad identificadas, es la sociocultural la que mayor incidencia tiene en la salvaguardia del patrimonio cultural. En el abordaje del patrimonio cultural desde la perspectiva de la sustentabilidad los procesos de evaluación mediante el uso de indicadores presentan amplias ventajas para la formulación, análisis y seguimiento de las políticas culturales y los procesos de toma de decisiones en la gestión. En este contexto, existe un amplio espectro de propuestas de indicadores de sustentabilidad que son aplicados, desde diferentes enfoques, a una diversidad de objetos y de contextos. No obstante, en general se observa que, en la mayoría de las propuestas, se formulan indicadores cuantitativos con una fuerte incidencia de las dimensiones económica y ambiental, presentando limitaciones para abordar aspectos más sensibles del patrimonio cultural, como las valoraciones y percepciones, que por tener un carácter subjetivo no son fácilmente cuantificables. Por ello, en el presente trabajo se presenta una propuesta metodológica para la evaluación de la sustentabilidad sociocultural del patrimonio urbano en ciudades medias mediante un conjunto de indicadores formulados desde un enfoque cualitativo, diseñada y testeada en una ciudad intermedia de Argentina (Olavarría). La metodología propuesta permite medir los avances y retrocesos del patrimonio en pos de su sustentabilidad en el mediano plazo. Además, facilita la integración de evaluaciones de distintas disciplinas e incorpora la mirada de los principales actores de la patrimonialización y la gestión del patrimonio, así como posibilita la realización de un diagnóstico de la situación del patrimonio urbano en las áreas de estudio. The transformations in cities since the beginning of the industrial revolution are one of the main threats to safeguarding urban heritage. These circumstances have demanded the elaboration of strategies and new approaches to achieve the sustainable development of cultural heritage. In this respect, in recent decades, the link between cultural heritage and the different dimensions of sustainability has been at the centre of the heritage agenda of national and international organisations and researchers from all over the world. Of the various dimensions of sustainability identified, the sociocultural dimension has the most significant impact on safeguarding cultural heritage. In the approach to cultural heritage from the perspective of sustainability, evaluation processes through the use of indicators have broad advantages for formulating, analysing and monitoring cultural policies and management decision-making processes. In this context, a broad spectrum of proposals for sustainability indicators is applied from different approaches to various objects and contexts. However, in general, it is observed that most of the proposals formulate quantitative indicators with a substantial incidence of the economic and environmental dimensions, presenting limitations to address more sensitive aspects of cultural heritage, such as valuations and perceptions, which are not easily quantifiable due to their subjective nature. Therefore, this paper presents a methodological proposal for evaluating the sociocultural sustainability of urban heritage in medium-sized cities through a set of indicators formulated from a qualitative approach designed and tested in a medium-sized city in Argentina (Olavarría). The proposed methodology makes it possible to measure the progress and setbacks of heritage in pursuit of sustainability in the medium term. In addition, it facilitates the integration of evaluations from different disciplines. It incorporates the viewpoint of the main actors in heritage and heritage management, as well as making it possible to diagnose the situation of urban heritage in the areas of study.

The relationship between heritage, conservation and tourism has determined countless actions on the historic centers of several cities in the world. In Latin America, governmental entities have set guidelines for urban heritage interventions through plans, programs and a variety of projects implemented in recent decades. The predominant emphasis of these actions has been on safeguarding tangible aspects of heritage, adhering to international conservation guidelines, and promoting tourism as a means to stimulate sustainable local development. However, a critical point of these efforts lies in the neglect of adverse social consequences imposed on local residents and communities. In this paper we consider a representative case: the heritage area of Cuenca in Ecuador, where an intervention took place starting with the UNESCO Declaration of the case study in 1999 until 2019. We characterize the process, analyze the incidence of planning instruments and identify the attributes that were enhanced as well as those that were suppressed through a historical review of current plans and executed projects. The results reveal the persistence of a conservationist and orthodox vision of heritage, which leads to the displacement of vulnerable groups. Hence, it is imperative to reevaluate intervention policies in the urban heritage context of Latin American cities like Cuenca.

Gentrification, as a new domain for research and analysis, is a theoretical process which has debatable impacts. Many researchers may study gentrification process within international cities; however, there are few attempts to identify gentrification indicators. The main goal of the paper is to clarify and identify what is happening in Downtown Cairo nowadays; and to address the complex issue of the gentrification of existing buildings towards their conversion to a modern contemporary use. It focuses as well on the current and former applications in the local Egyptian case on the basis of its particularity. In order to attain this goal, the paper examines the relevance of the gentrification indicators developed by Phillip Clay in 1979, Peter Moskowitz in 2017, and others trying to implement it on Downtown Cairo, in order to recognize the ongoing gentrification procedure, then to consider the possible precautions to control gentrification development, and avert its negative impact while using its positive ones to upgrade the gentrified urban zones. This paper starts by introducing the history of the term gentrification, its advantages and disadvantages; then it also reviews different theoretical approaches outlining its stages. Next, the paper inspects the Egyptian legislations related to conservation, followed by analysis of the Downtown Cairo’s case study firstly through the Egyptian Government ’s project to develop Khedivial Cairo, secondly through the private sector initiatives. The racecourse "Kerepesi Ügető" in Budapest was closed in 2000, and all of its buildings were demolished except for the Class II Grandstand, which had been declared a national monument earlier. Our task was to perform a comprehensive static investigation of this grandstand and to develop a methodology for structural strengthening in order to preserve this monument for future generations. Investigations included in situ measurements, laboratory material tests, and finite‐element analysis of the structure. According to the results of static calculations, the method of strengthening was proposed, which included the injection of cracks, integration of new structural elements, application of concrete jacketing, and bonded carbon‐fiber‐reinforced polymer sheets. The applied strengthening and renovation method extended the lifespan of the grandstand by 50 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses several processes of the “Society of Culture”, with a specific focus on recent urban development, and including dynamics of gentrification, touristification, segregation and their implications for the preservation of urban heritage. While cultural values exist on multiple levels – intrinsically artistic, social, and economic – it is the economic ones that have become dominant and predatory in recent decades. Through the analysis of international data on urbanism and tourism, we explore the role and value of urban heritage in European cities. Drawing from a literature review of the different thematic areas, taking into account relevant references from each one of them to establish an interrelated analysis, we try to argue why considering heritage-led tourist gentrification is urgent, what do we know so far, and some possible future lines of research that could contribute to a better understanding of these processes. This research introduces an experimental framework based on 3D acoustic and psycho-acoustic sensors supplemented with ambisonics and sound morphological analysis, whose objective is to study urban soundscapes. A questionnaire that highlights the differences between what has been measured and what has been perceiveSd by humans complements the quantitative approach with a qualitative evaluation. The comparison of the measurements with the questionnaire provides a global vision of the perception of these soundscapes, as well as differences and similarities. The approach is experimented within the historical center of the Tunisian city of Sidi Bou Saïd, demonstrating that from a range of complementary protocols, a soundscape environment can be qualified. This article explores the role of walking and storytelling as a mode of memory-making in Belfast's City Centre, a 'shared space' that has largely been emptied of reminders of the 30-year conflict in Northern Ireland known as the 'Troubles'. Memorialization remains a divisive and contentious process in Northern Ireland with two opposing narrative traditions and a lack of shared collective memory. In the absence of state-led and officialized memorials to the 'Troubles', I explore how urban heritage can be expressed in motion, through spatial stories told by place-based professionals (urban planners, architects, heritage practitioners, arts and community groups) in the City Centre. In particular, I employ David Lloyd's idea of 'melancholy survivals' to describe the ways in which memories of conflict persist in the narratives we tell and in the small physical residues scattered throughout the City Centre, which we encounter through walking and spatial stories. I argue that walking go-along interviews with place-based professionals elicits storytelling that evokes a mobile mode of memorialization. I begin by discussing the context of memorialization in Belfast's City Centre, its role during the 'Troubles', and its subsequent urban redevelopment as a 'shared space'. I then map out critical discussions around my methodological framework, which considers spatial storytelling, geographies of affect and walking methods as ways to engage urban heritage in cities that have experienced conflict. This is followed by observations from the walking go-along interviews, which include stories of physical residues, the psychosomatic legacies of conflict and ways the difficult memories factor into narratives in Belfast's City Centre. We do carry an impression of the places where we grow up or the places we touch in our daily life—somehow it gets mapped in our minds. That is how we create a sensory bonding with the place via our perception; how it smells, how it tastes, or what kind of a phonic place it is. But somehow, with the rapid pace of urbanization and mechanization of age‐old occupations, these senses are being lost to the citizens in an urban area which we get to hear from our fore generations. "Tracing the everyday Sensory Heritage of Kolkata Streets"—"Sohorer Songbedon" is an attempt in a form of an exhibition from a group of enthusiastic geographers for the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) to bring back some iconic hereditary sounds and smells of the city to the mass. While visiting the exhibition, we interacted with the organizers and a group of visitors through some semi‐structured interviews, and simultaneously some observations were also made. The purpose of the visit lied in experiencing how our city and its various pockets can emerge through its sensory scape without one being physically present there and also let the people know about such an initiative which was staged for the first time in the city. The aim was also to witness if these sensory components from the city perceptible could evoke any repercussions among the visitors or not. In museology, with the gaining importance of intangible expressions of heritage objects and interpretation of the visitors of the flowing information in the event, this one could have been used as a profound example of such kind in the future. This study validated the theoretical keypoints obtained from a previously published scoping literature review within the context of three Norwegian World Heritage sites: Røros, Rjukan, and Notodden. The cross-sectional table of the urban heritage facility management (UHFM) framework, which is based on interviews and correspondence, demonstrates the connection between the tasks of the six clusters of technical departments responsible for the provision of urban-scale support services and the modified critical steps of the Historic Urban Landscape approach, in which an additional step for “monitoring and evaluation” was included. UHFM operates at the intersection of heritage preservation, urban-scale facility management, and stakeholder coordination, which requires a careful balance between urban heritage conservation and sustainable urban management practices, thus enabling the preservation of World Heritage status that, among others, fosters sustainable tourism. The three case studies highlighted the significance of UHFM in preserving heritage value, authenticity, visual quality, and significance. Besides providing comprehensive support services that extend beyond the daily tasks of conservators and World Heritage managers, UHFM also allows feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement. This study highlighted the complex relationship between the provision of urban-scale support services and the preservation of Outstanding Universal Value as the core business of World Heritage sites.

Abstract Urban heritage is a vital resource that connects communities to their local identity. Unplanned developments and rapid urbanisation often harm the authenticity of historic areas, disrupting the cultural fabric and altering their character. This study introduces the Relative Positive Impact Index (RPII), a novel technique for assessing the socio-cultural impacts of urban revitalisation. The significance of RPII lies in its ability to quantitatively evaluate the impacts on the cultural fabric and integrity of historic urban areas, which is crucial for sustainable urban development. The study’s objective is to apply RPII in evaluating qualitative socio-cultural characteristics in historic urban areas, with a focus on four main criteria and 16 sub-criteria, in the case of the Kuttichira precinct. The methodology integrates the analysis of published literature, a quantitative survey mapping the stakeholders’ perception, and qualitative insights. This approach facilitates an in-depth understanding of how urban revitalisation affects local socio-cultural dynamics, preserving the authenticity and character of historic areas. The study reveals that the revitalisation project in Kuttichira positively impacts the socio-cultural fabric of the area, maintaining cultural integrity and addressing social challenges. These findings offer valuable insights for sustainable urban development and policymaking in historic areas. The study recommends the application of RPII in other urban precincts for comparative analysis and further development of urban development practices, contributing to informed urban policy and planning decisions.

Cultural heritage is a reflection of a community’s adopted ways of life. It comprises customs, behaviors, settings, physical objects, artistic expression, and ideals. As an impact of the Earthquake in 2015, the heritage building suffered catastrophic damage. This research examined the Thimi community’s approach to urban heritage construction through conservation, reconstruction, renovation, and restoration, and shares problems, success stories, and lessons learned in the cases of Phalcha (Rest House) and Dyo (Temple). The Thimi Municipality provided all required technical and financial support for these renovation and reconstruction activities. Conducting a depth literature review and understanding the process of both qualitative and quantitative methods of rebuilding, renovating, and restoring the urban cultural heritage structure, this research uses a case study approach. Locals, consultants, and technical employees involved in the rehabilitation and planning work provided most of the materials for all case studies. This study finds that the residents of Thimi feel pride in having their heritage structures restored by local community participation. Despite the local community efforts, there are a few shortcomings with the financial, technical, social, and administrative constructions and understanding of customary practices. The Madhyapur Thimi Municipality has developed measures to support communities willing to lead urban heritage conservation.

Despite the shift from object- to landscape-based approaches in urban heritage management, the analysis of heritage as objects is still viable, as the current archaeological theories of material culture do not see objects in the same manner as the object-based approach. To reveal the broader significance of urban archaeology for the cityscape, the relationship between the discipline and urban space is analyzed in the framework of fragmentation theory. The theory is based on prehistoric archaeology but modified to describe urban archaeology and its effects in the contemporary city. It is argued that fragments, regardless of their connection with the past and their central role in heritage work, also have autonomous potential to distract and act as agents disconnected from their original objects. The creative character of urban fragments should be explored further by archaeologists and heritage management. Participatory processes are a democratic tool in the field of cultural heritage, but what happens when the whole process revolves around a set of expert premises? How symbolic and authoritative would such participation be? This article will reflect on the dynamics of citizen participation and the power of institutional narratives focused on urban cultural heritage. Thus, this work proposes a methodological review and discussion through a case study where citizen participation is addressed as a process within the service of citizens: the refurbishment and design of new spaces within La Model prison complex in Barcelona. The aim is to explore whether institutionalised participation continues to be a symbolic tool that supports the authorised heritage discourses or if, conversely, it is enabling the embodiment of the multivocality of the stakeholders involved in the heritage management process in an effective way. This study concludes with a discussion that invites cultural heritage researchers to reflect on the difficulties involved in organising less-authorised proposals in the field of cultural heritage management. Historical urban fabrics have many valuable attributes, but they are often subject to reconstruction plans, especially when they suffer from economic and social problems. Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is a process of evaluating the positive and negative effects of large-scale projects on different aspects of society. The Bein-al-Haramain project, which was implemented in the historical district of Shiraz in 1995, is a suitable case for this study because of its magnitude and its location in a deteriorated historical area. The project affected Mansourieh Neighbourhood, a historic area that dates back to the pre-Safavid period. The aim of this study is to explore and describe the impacts of this project on the lives of the local residents from their own perspectives. This aim is pursued by using the participatory approach of SIA in the paper. The research employs content analysis as the method, semi-structured interviews as the data collection technique, and qualitative survey as the research strategy. According to the authors' analysis, the Bein-al-Haramain reconstruction project had mostly negative impacts on the lives of the people living in the Mansourieh Neighbourhood. This paper reports on a project that explored the possibilities for utilizing graphic heritage as a tool to help UNESCO designations managers and their stakeholders better interpret their heritage in light of sustainable development challenges in urban environments sensitive to heritage. With the eventual goal to inform policy-making that benefits from a closer understanding between design and heritage, five phases are outlined. These employ several methods resulting in two important ways for graphic heritage to enhance the management of urban heritage contexts with possible future implications for UNESCO-designated Creative Cities, World Heritage Sites, and Biosphere Reserves. These contextualize the intrinsic and extrinsic nature of graphic heritage for UNESCO designations, and a scoping study for Bradford UNESCO City of Film features with several objectives outlining the basis for future research, collaboration, and wider dissemination. Heritage is the bedrock of our culture, with a significant impact on politics, society, trade and many other facets of life. It directly and indirectly informs, influences and inspires public debate and policy. With 40 properties inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, of which two are World Heritage Cities, India still has many aspects of its legacy that have yet to be studied and appreciated. Heritage cities have superior employment opportunities and a higher population density than non-heritage cities. This paper describes the aspects and approaches of India's heritage-based city development. The study principally focuses on heritage in the context of India using global principles. Built Environment Education (BEE) plays an important role in urban sustainability as citizens who are more aware of the surrounding architectural heritage have better opportunities to develop a sense of place and place attachment. Themes and stories make the architectural fabric of a city more legible that is why urban walking tours are such a popular format for BEE initiatives. These experience-based educative events are originally constructed for visitors (mainly tourists) of a city to receive in-situ impressions of the built heritage during their visit. But in recent years, the new phenomenon of proximity tourism appeared, inviting locals to participate in walking tours to discover their own neighbourhood, rendering this tourist-focused activity into a BEE tool for adults. Urban walks have been used in architectural education at the university level for quite some time, and recently organisations focusing on BEE have adapted the format as well, which therefore can reach a wide range of audiences. This research presents the quantitative and geo-referenced analysis of 449 photos taken during the walking tours by participants and a qualitative content analysis of the photos. The results of a questionnaire completed by 119 students upon the end of their walking tour are presented and analysed to determine the effectiveness of this BEE methodology. Results show that the experience-based format of urban walking tours in the context of BEE can contribute to the forming of sense of place for participants, and therefore should be considered as an educational tool. This paper presents the experiences and outcomes of the EARTH_LAB laboratory at the Free University of Bolzano in the field of digitisation and enhancement of architectural and cultural heritage of South Tyrol. The work focuses on the research projects conducted by the group in the context of heritage education, with particular attention to the Alto Adige region. It describes the workflow used for the digitisation of architectures and the urban environment, including the use of technologies such as 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry. Additionally, it discusses the innovative approaches such as Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) algorithms for 3D environment reconstruction, emphasizing the potential of this methodologies for generating rapid, cost-effective, and accurate reconstructions. Many studies acknowledge the significance of assessment frameworks for urban heritage sites in preserving their identities. Due to the pandemic and its impact on heritage sites and visitors, the spatial features and identities of many heritage sites have undergone inevitable shifts, challenging the current assessment frameworks. As numerous urban heritage sites are being revitalised post COVID-19, this study aims to explore how heritage-assessment frameworks can be adapted during the pandemic to sustainably capture the identity of urban heritage sites, particularly from a spatial perspective. Methodologically, the study first examines existing urban-heritage-assessment frameworks, including typologies, embedded spatial attributes, and analysis methods, through a literature review. The research adopts the methodology framework for collecting and assessing evidence to demonstrate the cultural significance outlined in the ‘Guidance on identifying place and object of state-level social value in Victoria’ under Criterion G by the Heritage Council of Victoria. Chinatown, Melbourne, serves as the case study to address the research questions, utilising qualitative data from archival review and field observation. The results highlight the shortcomings of current heritage assessments, particularly in urban contexts, emphasising the overlooked importance of spatial attributes for understanding urban identity. This is exemplified by the exacerbated identity crisis in Chinatown, Melbourne, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the study recommends future heritage assessments incorporate spatial attributes with a thematic approach tailored to diverse cultural-heritage backgrounds in the post-pandemic era. The study acknowledges the sample size and encourages future studies to test the framework with case studies of varied backgrounds.

This article aims to identify spaces of order in dispute in the Historic District of Florianópolis and critically analyze the relationship between this material heritage and discourses of power; problematize the stances and recent interventions of public authorities that aim for a new identity for this District; recognize the articulation of a critical infrastructure and debate its influence on public opinion and political decisions in this central area.

The territory of Tipasa, an iconic UNESCO landscape that comprises the ancient city of Mauretania and its Royal Mausoleum, has never been systematically investigated. The exception may be Gsell's archaeological atlas of Algeria, compiled more than a century ago (Gsell, 1911). Since 2021, the TIPASA Project, a Spanish-Algerian survey program, was organized to shed light on this ill-studied ancient city and its territory. The survey approaches the subject from both the "site" and "off-site" perspectives, using tools such as remote sensing, field survey, and material culture, as well as an education program for Algerian students. This research is essential to understanding the part played by Punic, Hellenistic, Mauretanian, and Roman agents in creating the territory. The research methods and conceptual framework emphasize the particularities of North African cities and the creation of African-led networks in Antiquity across the Mediterranean, particularly the connections with the Iberian Peninsula before and after the imposition of Roman administrative structures. This study explores the collective memory and identity of a Chinese neighbourhood at the old city centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since the 1990s, this old neighbourhood, which has a famous Cantonese name – 'Chee Chong Kai' (CCK) – has been contentiously rebranded by the state as 'Chinatown'. The purpose of the present study is twofold. First, by drawing on observational data, interviews, questionnaires and photographic data, this paper uncovers the collective memory of the neighbourhood. Second, this study offers a critical insight into the renaming and rebranding of the CCK, identifying the ways in which the renaming/rebranding has affected the neighbourhood's collective identity. The findings reveal concerns over the changing landscapes in the neighbourhood that have affected or erased its character and heritage and the potential contention between the official and the 'vernacular' collective memory/identity. More importantly, the renaming/rebranding of the place itself reflects, paradoxically, the pressure to forego the neighbourhood's Chineseness. Drawing on the wider international tourism market and other power-related concerns, this study argues the need to reposition the CCK and an absence of major efforts to sustain the urban space and urban heritage in a way that would represent and proclaim a truly integrated (and inclusive) Malaysian society. Rapidly growing research in urban heritage studies highlights the significance of incorporating participatory approaches in urban transformation projects. And yet, participation tends to be limited, including only certain segments of the population. It is also acknowledged that cities are 'dynamic' and 'complex' systems. However, there is extremely limited research that captures the dynamic transformation mechanisms in historic urban environments. This paper aims to illustrate a novel, mixed-method and dynamic approach to unfold the dynamics of urban heritage areas. We do so by focusing on the historic area of Woolwich, a South-East suburb in London, UK. To do so, we apply 'critical system dynamics' for the analysis of a mixed dataset which incorporates architectural surveys, interviews, online surveys, social media data and visual observations of material change through light archaeology. Within the framework of 'deep cities', the article argues that the transformation of a place is a complex process that can be captured not only based on 'what we see' but also on 'what we cannot see'. In other words, the invisible (values, emotions, and senses) is as significant as the visible. This is of paramount importance as most urban planning policies tend to be based on material, visible remains and less on the spirit or soul of a place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The material-centered cultural heritage management approach does not contemplate ordinary people's closeness to heritage. Even after colonial relationships ended, colonial conceptions of what constitutes heritage drove national policy choices and state interventions regarding which elements of local history and culture should be valued and preserved and which could be destroyed and abandoned. Government rejection of non-elite populations and their connections to urban heritage resulted in the irrevocable destruction of important sites and traditions. But the rise of what I term heritage grassroots organizations (HGROs) has recently begun to reassert low-income and working-class citizens' role in the recognition and preservation of heritage. Focusing on the emergence of HGROs in Lima, Peru, this article demonstrates how colonial heritage narratives formed, persisted, and have more recently been challenged by local populations whose daily lives are affected by materialist approaches to heritage. Purpose: The paper aims to clarify threats facing heritage management in developing countries. It investigates the challenges facing the application of the historic urban landscape approach (HUL) in the city of Alexandria in Egypt, where heritage is trapped between unplanned developments from one side and deterioration from another side. Design/methodology/approach: This paper uses SWOT analysis regarding the heritage management approach of the historic site. Site observation, documentary reviews, an online questionnaire (due to the COVID situation) and some interviews with park visitors and shopkeepers have been adopted to capture the changes in the site management, specifically capturing the current status of the site. Findings: The paper presented an empirical study covering the evolution of heritage management practices. It suggests that building and maintaining the synergy between the government, the private sector and the public is essential for the sustainability of urban development in the city of Alexandria. It also asserts that heritage is a major catalyst of urban regeneration in the city. Research limitations/implications: This paper highlights major threats facing Alexandrian heritage. However, it lacks generalizability. Practical implications: It suggests inclusive urban conservation strategies that are based on the HUL approach that would revitalize the historic core and assist in preserving both its tangible and intangible heritage. These strategies can help decision makers to develop more sustainable approaches in managing city heritage and achieving sustainable development of the city core. Social implications: The paper presents a social implication through involving stakeholders in the sustainable revitalization project of Al-Shalalat district located in the city center of Alexandria. This article focuses on the problem of local communities’ awareness of heritage values in terms of urbanism, architecture, and construction and the traditions of place within a historic town. To study this problem, the authors conducted qualitative and quantitative research using the questionnaire method. They were carried out in the area of two selected small historic towns located in southern Poland in the Małopolska region: Muszyna and Piwniczna-Zdrój. Their aim was to determine the level of awareness of the cultural heritage values of both towns among their inhabitants. The results of the research are expected to identify areas of real educational needs in terms of the knowledge and a sense of value of local monuments. The authors believe that social participation and involvement of local communities is essential in the process of protecting and caring for monuments of indigenous cultural heritage.

This research introduces an experimental framework based on 3D acoustic and psycho-acoustic sensors supplemented with ambisonics and sound morphological analysis, whose objective is to study urban soundscapes. A questionnaire that highlights the differences between what has been measured and what has been perceiveSd by humans complements the quantitative approach with a qualitative evaluation. The comparison of the measurements with the questionnaire provides a global vision of the perception of these soundscapes, as well as differences and similarities. The approach is experimented within the historical center of the Tunisian city of Sidi Bou Saïd, demonstrating that from a range of complementary protocols, a soundscape environment can be qualified. This framework provides an additional dimension to urban planning studies.

Urban architectural heritage and its social manifestations are immersed in dynamics beyond their origin and conservation vision. Contemporary society reinterprets, reconfigures and resignifies it according to its own logics of empowerment. In this context, this article addresses the case of a bridge in the Historic Center of Cuenca (Ecuador) known by the names of Mariano Moreno Bridge, La Escalinata Bridge or Vivas Nos Queremos Bridge. It describes its patrimonial situation in terms of its values and its relationship with gender. Because of its social implications, this study is divided into two parts: a bibliographic analysis of the historical evolution of the monument, followed by a discussion of its heritage status, and the presentation of the design, validation and application of a qualitative tool to determine the values associated with the property. This tool is used in a focus group of actors to analyze the feminist activism developed on the bridge between 2020 and 2022. This research shows how cultural heritage can be known, valued and used from an inclusive perspective and how public space can be subject to processes of resignification. This bridge became a non-place, a forgotten and a meaningless site. However, due to the struggle for the vindication of women’s rights and freedom of expression, it has taken on a new meaning, becoming an integral part of the contemporary collective imaginary, regardless of its uncertain nomenclature.

Abstract The historic centre of Algiers (Casbah) presents a state of severe decay. Laws and legislative measures have been promulgated in the past three decades to provide an adequate framework for the conservation of the old city. This paper investigates the law and subsequent legal instruments used in heritage management and the impact of legislative provisions on the management of the living historic centre of the Casbah of Algiers. Before the issuance of Algerian Law n°98–04 relating to the protection of cultural heritage, the role of the various entities managing the Casbah was rather unclear. This law provides more details about the structure of urban heritage management. Additionally, a new heritage protection tool came into existence (the PPSMVSS, i.e., the Permanent Plan for Safeguarding and Enhancement of the Safeguarded Sector). Difficulties encountered in the field concerning the application of legislative tools caused considerable delays in preservation actions on the ground. This paper provides an analysis of the contradictions between text enforcement and conservation plans to understand the main reasons that led to the degradation of the historic area. Accordingly, the paper proposes a number of solutions to be implemented by the Algerian authorities.

The aim of the essay is to analyse the ways in which institutions use an artistic practice such as Street Art for the self-description of their culture, as in the case of the Taranto Regeneration Urban Street. In a socio-political context characterised in recent years by strong conflicts due to the effects of pollutants from one of Europe's largest steelworks, the Municipality of Taranto promotes a vast Street Art operation involving dozens of facades. The documentary describing the project is a useful text for understanding if and how institutions promote memories, define oblivion and narcotize conflicts.

Urban conservation strives to maintain continuity and preserve cultural heritage. However, a clear understanding of the impact of sustainability strategies on urban conservation within the context of urban heritage environments is lacking. This research aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of how sustainability strategies can influence urban conservation within urban heritage contexts. The study was conducted in Al-Saray Heritage Market in Baghdad. The current status of the market was evaluated through field research, including questionnaires, site visits, and personal observations. The study found that traditional markets continue to hold a unique allure, but they also face numerous urban challenges. To address these challenges, strategies aimed at conserving the urban heritage of the market and ensuring its ongoing relevance and use were devised, aligning with the research hypothesis that urban conservation in heritage urban environments heavily relies on the implementation of sustainability strategies. The research thus proposes a mechanism for achieving urban conservation in heritage urban environments, providing valuable insights for future urban planning and conservation efforts. Adapting historical city buildings into modern facilities is a basic problem in architecture today. In many large cities, historical centers preserve cultural heritage, including spiritual, cultural, economic, and social capital of irreplaceable value. Because of their importance, these centers must consider the unique characteristics of their surroundings, including harmony of size, spatial composition, architectural environment, facades, and the facilities in general. Disharmony in the architectural design of these centers is evident in the non-compliance of new objects, particularly in historical areas of the city. The restoration, reconstruction, and repair of these historical sites require special knowledge. Experts with this special knowledge can implement modern methods, strategic and operational modes of architecture, and public programs to preserve the historical and cultural values of these sites, thus preserving them for the future, which follows the sustainable development concept. The main conclusion of the research is that unique modern buildings, including novel architectural and constructive elements, can coexist with historical ones by using right policies and methods. In recent decades, the assessment of urban development activities has gained prominence, with a growing focus on their impact on historic urban areas. While numerous urban transformation assessment frameworks have been explored and applied, there is a notable gap in documented studies summarizing the literature specifically on heritage-led urban development assessments. Using bibliometric analysis and the PRISMA technique, this study extracts relevant articles from the Web of Science core database and offers insights into annual publication trends, scientific production by countries, author affiliations, citation frequency, relevant journals, and keywords. Network mapping reveals co-citations, keyword cooccurrences, author and country collaborations, and historiography. This research provides a valuable reference for future trends in heritage-led urban development assessment frameworks, benefiting researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers. Although the forces or impetuses that influence an urban structure are diverse, as has been fully studied by scholars from diverse research fields, some have played key roles. We endeavor to explore the key forces and mechanisms forming and transforming the urban spatial structure through Hangzhou, a multi-identity city. Upon studying classical ancient texts, historical maps, critical and recent literature, and POI data, we argue that the first and foremost driver of Hangzhou is commercial culture, rather than any other factors. Under a diachronic view and with graphic analysis, we distinguished Hangzhou's three major transformations during the last 900 years. Each transformation was, respectively, driven by the complicated commercial culture, which was mixed up with other elementary cultures, such as civil, leisure, landscape, and industrial. Furthermore, urban heritages were formed, inherited, revitalized, and reutilized during the transformation processes, which, in turn, enriched the commercial culture and vividly reshaped Hangzhou's urban structure.
