Abstract

Sn-Ta based alloy buttons of different compositions were prepared by the melt diffusion process among constituent metal powders, and then pressed into plates. Meanwhile Sn-Ti based alloy plates were sliced from the melt and cast ingot. Resulting Sn-based alloy plates were rolled into thin sheets. The Sn-based alloy sheet was laminated with a Nb sheet, and wound into a Jelly Roll (JR) composite. The composite was encased in a sheath, and fabricated into a thin wire followed by the heat treatment. The application of hydrostatic extrusion is useful at the initial stage of the fabrication. The JR wires using Sn-Ta and Sn-Ti based alloy sheets show a non-Cu Jc of ∼250 A/mm2 and ∼150 A/mm2 at 20 T and 22 T, respectively, at 4.2 K. It has been found that the Nb impregnates into the Sn-based alloy layers during the reaction, and Nb3Sn layers are synthesized by the mutual diffusion between the Nb sheet and the Sn-based alloy sheet without formation of voids. Sn-Ti based alloy sheets are attractive due to their easiness of mass production. The structure of this device, called here a “LEC structure” is characterized by low emitter impurity concentration and electrical impurity concentration and electrical barrier in the emitter, which causes superior device performance and productivity. 11. Optimization of the Sn-Ta Sheet Composition in Jelly Roll Processed (Nb, Ta)3Sn Wires.

Abstract

Tightly shrunk Sn-Ta ingots with good workability were prepared by the reaction at 750°C–800°C from the mixed powder of Sn and Ta containing 25–30at%Ta. Then Jelly Roll processed wires were fabricated starting from Sn-Ta/Nb composites in which thick (Nb, Ta)3Sn layers were produced after the heat treatment. A few wt% Cu addition to the Sn-Ta mixed powder reduces the heat treatment temperature. Moreover, a few at% Ti substitution for Sn + Ta enhances the formation of (Nb, Ta)3Sn layer, and improves the non-Cu Jc of the wire. In the present study, effect of the Sn-Ta-Ti-Cu sheet composition on the structure and high-field performance of the wire has been studied. It has been found that a small amount of Ti and Cu addition decreases the amount of Ta in the sheet from 25–30at% to 10at%, which is favorable for the material cost reduction. Moreover, it has been revealed that thick (Nb, Ta)3Sn layers are synthesized even if the Cu concentration in the sheet is decreased less than lwt% when a few at% Ti is substituted. A non-Cu Jc of ∼ 150 A/mm2 has been obtained at 22 T and 4.2 K in the wires with different sheet composition after the heat treatment at 725°–750°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Baicalin is a flavonoid extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. As it has significant antitumor and apoptosis-inducing effects, baicalin may be useful as a lead compound in new antitumor drug development. However, as the pharmacological actions of baicalin have yet to be elucidated, we isolated its target protein, which was successfully identified as Annexin A2. Annexin A2 forms a heterotetramer with S100A10 protein, which plays an important role in the plasminogen activator system. The heterotetramer bound to tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) activates the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin and promotes the expression of STAT-3 and NF-κB, which are target genes involved in the development of cancer. Moreover, NF-κB and STAT-3 induce the expression of cell inhibitors of apoptotic proteins and inhibit apoptosis. To examine whether these antitumor and apoptosis-inducing effects of baicalin are mediated by Annexin A2, we prepared Annexin A2 knockdown HepG2 cells. We compared mRNA expression by RT-qPCR and apoptosis by caspase-3 activity assays in Annexin A2 knockdown HepG2 cells. The results showed that the antitumor and apoptosis-inducing effects of baicalin are mediated by Annexin A2. Abstract

The clinical significance of lung tumor spread through air spaces (STAS) has been extensively studied, and is recognized as a unique pattern of invasion. Previous studies of STAS have focused primarily on STAS in alveolar spaces, whereas STAS in the bronchiolar spaces (bronchiolar STAS) has been described in only a few case reports only. Here, we examined 306 cases of primary lung adenocarcinoma and found that bronchiolar STAS was present in 18%. Bronchiolar STAS was associated with an inferior prognosis, more advanced stage, and higher histologic grade. No significant difference in clinicopathological factors or prognosis was observed between cases with bronchiolar STAS and those with alveolar STAS alone. Notably, bronchiolar STAS often occurred simultaneously with alveolar STAS and endobronchial spread of adenocarcinoma, particularly when bronchiolar STAS was present outside the main tumor. We also identified cases where bronchiolar STAS and endobronchial spread of adenocarcinoma occurred simultaneously in the same bronchi or bronchioles located outside the main tumor, as well as cases with bronchiolar STAS adjacent to intrapulmonary metastatic nodules. Our results highlight the significant role of bronchiolar STAS in the aerogenous spread of adenocarcinoma cells. Bronchiolar STAS can be regarded as a histologic variant of alveolar STAS.
