However, no studies to date have analyzed the overall association between these factors and depressive symptoms. In the present study, we hypothesized that depressive rumination mediates the impacts of inappropriate childhood nurturing experiences on depressive symptoms, and that these mediating effects are moderated by trait anxiety, and tested these hypotheses in adult volunteers.Methods: The subjects were adult volunteers who were investigated between April 2017 and April 2018. A self-report questionnaire on demographic data, childhood nurturing experiences, trait anxiety, depressive rumination, and depressive symptoms was distributed to conduct the survey, and written informed consent and valid responses were obtained from 585 subjects. Mediation and moderated-mediation analyses were performed by SPSS 28 and macro PROCESS 4.0 software. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Tokyo Medical University.Results: Parental care showed a significant negative indirect effect on depressive symptoms via its effect on depressive rumination (p < 0.01), whereas parental overprotection showed the opposite effect (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the mediation effect of depressive rumination on depressive symptoms was increased by trait anxiety (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Our present study demonstrated that the main factor affecting depressive symptoms is inappropriate childhood nurturing experiences, which indirectly enhance depression by intensifying depressive rumination, and that depressive rumination and trait anxiety mutually reinforce each other to enhance depressive symptoms. These findings may be useful for the prevention of depressive symptoms. Various personality traits are known to be associated with these effects. However, the influence of trait anxiety on job stress has not yet been reported. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the experience of peer victimization in childhood and trait anxiety influence job stress in adulthood.Methods: A questionnaire survey, including State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Childhood Victimization Rating Scale, and Brief Job Stress Questionnaire, was administered to 566 adult workers. The interrelationship between multiple variables was analyzed by multiple regression analysis and path analysis.Results: In the path model, childhood peer victimization had a positive direct effect on trait anxiety and the psychological and physical stress response (PPSR). Trait anxiety had a positive direct effect on job stressors and PPSR, and job stressors had a positive direct effect on PPSR. Regarding indirect effects, childhood peer victimization had a significant adverse effect on job stressors and PPSR via trait anxiety.Conclusion: Our results showed that childhood peer victimization has a negative impact on job stress in adulthood, which is influenced by trait anxiety. Interventions to address peer victimization in childhood and trait anxiety may reduce job stress in adulthood, and thus contribute to improved occupational mental health and productivity in the workplace.Keywords: job stress, peer victimization, trait anxiety, path analysis, mediation effect

It has been reported that negative childhood experiences, such as abuse, can influence depressive symptoms through subjective social status and personality traits, such as self-esteem. A similar mechanism is presumed to underlie anxiety symptoms in adulthood. Therefore, we hypothesized that subjective social status and self-esteem are intermediate factors in the indirect effects of childhood abuse on state anxiety in adulthood, and analyzed the indirect effects via these factors using a path analysis.Subjects and Methods: Child Abuse and Trauma Scale, Subjective Social Status, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y questionnaires were administered in a self-report format to 404 adult volunteers from January 2014 to August 2014. In addition, a path analysis was conducted to determine whether subjective social status and self-esteem are associated with the indirect effects of childhood abuse on anxiety symptoms in adulthood.Results: Childhood abuse did not directly affect state anxiety in adulthood, but affected state anxiety via subjective social status and self-esteem. Subjective social status affected state anxiety via self-esteem. This model explained 25.2% of the variation in state anxiety in adult volunteers.Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that childhood abuse affects anxiety in adulthood through subjective social status and self-esteem. Therefore, interventions that enhance subjective social status and self-esteem for adults who experienced childhood abuse may help reduce their anxiety.Keywords: childhood abuse, subjective social status, self-esteem, anxiety

However, the interaction between neuroticism and resilience remains unclear. In this study, we hypothesized that resilience and neuroticism are mediators between parental rearing quality experienced in childhood and depressive symptoms in adulthood, and furthermore, that resilience and neuroticism interact with each other in their effects on depressive symptoms. To test these hypotheses, we conducted structural equation modeling and hierarchical multiple regression analysis including interactions in adult volunteers.Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted on 528 adult volunteers recruited at Tokyo Medical University for 1 year from April 2017 to April 2018. The Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-revised short version, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 were used as questionnaires, and their scores were analyzed using structure equation modeling. The interaction between resilience and neuroticism was analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression analysis.Results: Structural equation modeling showed that parenting quality (care and overprotection) experienced in childhood had a significant indirect effect on the severity of depressive symptoms in adulthood, mediated by both neuroticism and resilience. Among the subscores of the PBI, “care” showed opposite effects to “overprotection”. Structural equation modeling of “care” and “overprotection” explained 36.9% and 36.6% of the variability in depressive symptoms in adulthood, respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that the negative interaction between neuroticism and resilience had a significant effect on depressive symptom severity in adulthood.Conclusion: The results of this study show that resilience and neuroticism are mediators of the effects from parental child-rearing to depressive symptoms in adulthood. Therefore, elucidating the pathophysiological mechanism of depression is important. Sleep disturbance and sleep reactivity are symptoms of depression and are also known to exacerbate depressive symptoms. On the other hand, it is well known that resilience ameliorates depressive symptoms. To our knowledge, there have been no reports to date regarding the interaction effects among sleep disturbance, sleep reactivity, and resilience on depressive symptoms. We hypothesized that resilience buffers the aggravating effects of sleep disturbance and sleep reactivity on depressive symptoms. To test this hypothesis, we conducted hierarchical multiple regression analyses.Subjects and Methods: A total of 584 Japanese adult volunteers were recruited between April 2017 and April 2018 by convenience sampling. Their demographic characteristics, sleep disturbance, sleep reactivity, resilience, and depressive symptoms were investigated using self-administered questionnaires. The data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression analyses.Results: Sleep disturbance and sleep reactivity were significantly positively associated with depressive symptoms, whereas resilience was significantly negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between sleep disturbance or sleep reactivity and resilience on depressive symptoms. Resilience significantly alleviated the aggravating effect of sleep disturbance and sleep reactivity on depressive symptoms.Conclusion: Our results indicate that people with lower resilience have more severe depressive symptoms that are associated with sleep disturbance and sleep reactivity. Therefore, there is a possibility that the enhancement of resilience will buffer the aggravating effects of sleep disturbance and sleep reactivity on depressive symptoms, and that improving sleep quality might alleviate the negative effect of low resilience on depressive symptoms.Keywords: depression, resilience, sleep disturbance, sleep reactivity, CD-RISC

Herein, we describe an additional post-hoc stratifying analysis of the possible differences in the effect of IOP-lowering and pulse rate (PR) after adjunctive Brim or Tim to PGA.Patients and Methods: This study included 128 subjects. Patients with NTG treated with PGA were stratified based on their baseline IOP. The changes in IOP from baseline and the effect of patient factors on IOP changes were investigated. Patients were stratified by age for investigation of their PR and blood pressure (BP). The change and the effect of patient factors on PR and BP were investigated.Results: After stratification analysis, in 52 eyes treated with Brim and 61 eyes with Tim with baseline IOP 12 ≤ IOP ≤ 16 mmHg, both eye drops lowered IOP significantly (P < 0.0001), and the IOP-lowering efficacy of Brim was non-inferior to that of Tim. However, in 9 Brim- and 6 Tim-treated eyes with baseline IOP of < 12 mmHg, no statistically significant decrease in IOP was evident with either eye drop. In the Tim group, PR decreased significantly (P < 0.05) after stratification by age.Conclusion: The IOP-lowering efficacy of Brim was non-inferior to that of Tim after stratification by baseline IOP (12 ≤ IOP ≤ 16 mmHg). The discrepancy in the IOP-lowering effects of Brim and Tim observed in the previous study was thought to be related to enrolled subjects with low baseline IOP. PR decreased significantly in the Tim group even after age stratification. However, the DSM-5 criteria for melancholia (DSM-MEL) have been criticized, because of the difficulty in clearly distinguishing between melancholic and non-melancholic depression using DSM-MEL. Psychomotor disturbance (PMD) is one of the most important, as well as one of the only measurable symptoms of melancholia. Parker et al developed the CORE measure, which assesses PMD as a behavioral characteristic. The aim of our study was to objectively identify the subjective symptoms of melancholia by analyzing the symptoms associated with PMD.Patients and Methods: A total of 106 participants with MDD were examined by psychiatrists. Multiple regression analysis was performed in which the total CORE score was the dependent variable, and items of the DSM-MEL and historically suggested melancholic features were independent variables.Results: The following five independent variables were able to predict the total CORE score: 1) feelings of having lost feeling, 2) depressive delusions, 3) perplexity, 4) indecisiveness, and 5) no aggression against others. These five variables were more strongly associated with the total CORE score than the DSM-MEL.Limitation: The major limitation of this study was that when choosing non-DSM melancholic signs and symptoms, we did not comprehensively evaluate and select the symptoms but chose items that are clinically important.Conclusion: We identified five subjective symptoms that were associated with PMD. The thermoelectric properties of Heusler-type Fe2–xV1+xAl1–ySiy and Fe2–xV1+x–yTiyAl alloys have been investigated to clarify which off-stoichiometric alloy, i.e., V-rich (x>0) or V-poor (x<0), is more effective in enhancing the Seebeck coefficient when doped by Si and Ti, while retaining a low electrical resistivity. Large Seebeck coefficients of –182 μV/K and 110 μV/K at 300K are obtained for n-type Fe1.95V1.05Al0.97Si0.03 and p-type Fe2.04V0.93Ti0.03Al, respectively. When the Seebeck coefficient is plotted as a function of valence electron concentration (VEC), the VEC dependence for the doped off-stoichiometric alloys falls on characteristic curves depending on the off-stoichiometric composition x. It is concluded that a larger Seebeck coefficient with a negative sign can be obtained for the V-rich alloys rather than the V-poor alloys, whilst good p-type materials are always derived from the V-poor alloys. Substantial enhancements in the Seebeck coefficient for the off-stoichiometric alloys could be achieved by a favorable modification in the electronic structure around the Fermi level through the antisite V or Fe defect formation. This work establishes a method of controlling the c-axis-oriented structure of α-Fe (soft magnetic)/L10-FePd (hard magnetic) thin films in the dual-phase compositional region in thermal equilibrium. Two types of thin films were prepared; one is a single-layered thin film, and the other is a multilayered film, [FePd(x nm)/Fe(5 nm)]n (x: thickness, n: the number of multilayers), both of which are deposited on silica glass substrates. For single-layered films, the ordering process is retarded by phase separation that requires long-range diffusion. In this case, the <111> oriented domains preferentially grow from the film surface, and the c-axis-oriented structure is not obtained. On the contrary, for multilayered films, each FePd layer can undergo ordering without phase separation subject to the constraint of strong biaxial tensile stress resulting from the difference in the thermal contractions between Fe/FePd film and the silica glass substrate. Consequently, the L10 domains with c-axis orientation in the normal direction of the film surface are preferentially formed in the initial amorphouslike structure, eventually leading to the desired c-axis-oriented structure. Wearing dentures and dysphagia are common in older individuals; however, it is still unknown how dentures affect oral and pharyngeal swallowing. The purpose of this study was to reveal the effects of wearing and removing dentures on oropharyngeal movements during pharyngeal swallowing in the feeding sequence of solid food. Participants were 25 edentulous volunteers (nine men, 16 women; mean age 76·2 years) who wore complete dentures. The test food was minced agar jelly containing barium sulphate. Subjects were instructed to feed and swallow the test food with or without dentures during observation using videofluorography. We quantitatively evaluated the range, distance and duration of oropharyngeal movements during pharyngeal swallowing. When dentures were absent, the range of mandible and hyoid movements were significantly expanded in the anterosuperior direction, and the range of laryngeal movement was significantly expanded in the anterior direction. Additionally, the posterior pharyngeal wall contraction and upper oesophageal sphincter opening significantly increased. In addition, the distances of the mandible, hyoid and laryngeal movements and the mandibular duration were significantly extended when dentures were absent. No significant differences were observed in the duration of movements of other organs between wearing and removing dentures. The hyoid bone, larynx, posterior pharyngeal wall and upper oesophageal sphincter do not change their duration of movements when dentures were removed but, rather, expand their range of movement. This might be a spatial change of oropharyngeal movement to avoid temporal changes in pharyngeal swallowing when dentures were absent in edentulous older individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) co-infections progress rapidly and lead to cirrhosis. In Japan, the prevalence of HBV and HDV co-infected patients is low. Therefore, there are few reports of patients with HBV and HDV co-infection having undergone liver transplantation. Abstract: The incidence of choriocarcinoma has decreased over time and therapeutic results have improved about 90% complete remission in patients without extensive metastasis. However, some choriocarcinomas metastasize to other organs and show resistance to chemotherapy, having a poor prognosis despite multidisciplinary treatment. Better methods of early diagnosis for recurrence or micrometastasis, and treatment against cases with intractable gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) are needed to improve the prognosis. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone composed of two dissimilar subunits and a tumor marker to make a diagnosis and monitor therapeutic effect in GTN. Even when hCG levels in the serum become too low to measure with the hCG β-CTP system which is the most sensitive assay, there are estimated to be approximately 10,000 trophoblastic cells in the body. Residual trophoblast cells may cause symptoms such as bleeding or undergo malignant transformation to choriocarcinoma. Since most monoclonal antibodies developed so far are murine, administration creates human anti-mouse antibodies, resulting in clinical failure. More recent mouse/human chimeric antibodies or humanized antibodies still possess substantial immunogenicity that makes repeated administration difficult. In the present study, KM mice that can produce completely human monoclonal antibodies were used to prepare hCG-specific human monoclonal antibody. This yielded 8-1A, a human monoclonal antibody capable of reacting with intact hCG. In the future, new diagnostic techniques and treatments for chorionic diseases may be developed using this kind of human monoclonal antibody. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We investigated the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering potential of latanoprost in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) or primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). This prospective study included 59 NTG and 20 POAG patients treated with the following four dosing regimens of latanoprost: patients on no previous medication received latanoprost as initial therapy (Group 1, n=31), patients on beta-blocker therapy received latanoprost as adjunctive therapy (Group II, n=9), patients on unoprostone monotherapy were switched to latanoprost monotherapy (Group III, n=14), and patients previously on dual therapy with isopropyl unoprostone and beta-blocker were switched to a combined treatment of latanoprost and beta-blocker (Group IV, n=25). IOP significantly decreased 8 weeks after initiation of latanoprost therapy by 19.9% in Group I, 20.5% in Group II, 16.6% in Group III, and 12.2% in Group IV. In Groups I and II, there was a significant positive correlation between the magnitude of IOP reduction induced by latanoprost and the IOP level before latanoprost therapy. The IOP level before latanoprost therapy is a contributing factor in the IOP-lowering efficacy of latanoprost. Latanoprost is more effective in lowering IOP than isopropyl unoprostone. Programmed cell death (PCD) in normal human skin tissues was studied by using in situ specific labelling of fragmented DNA. This labelling method clearly stained the nuclei of Henle's layer in the bulb of the anagen hair follicle in serial sections, and the nuclei of the inner root sheath cuticle cells and Huxley's layer cells showed positive staining in the upper part of the hair follicles. This staining pattern was consistent with the sequence of keratinization in the three layers. The nuclei of differentiated cells located at the centre of the sebaceous glands, and those of the granular keratinocyte layer, were also stained. These findings suggest that PCD might play a key role in the terminal differentiation of the epidermis and epidermal appendages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This letter reports the control of the c-axis orientation and the magnetic properties of L10 FePd in the well-annealed FePd/Fe thin films Fe(20 nm)/FePd(10 nm)/Fe(5 nm)/SiO2-substrate and Fe(20 nm)/FePd(5 nm)/Fe(5 nm)/SiO2-substrate, with the compositions of dual phase region in phase equilibrium. After annealing at 550 °C for 24 h, the c-axis of L10 FePd is controlled to be oriented in the normal direction in the soft Fe matrix. These thin films exhibit the exchange-coupling of hard FePd with soft Fe, and a characteristic spring-magnet behavior showed up reversibly as a significant jump from positive to negative in the magnetization reversal. Disseminated mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in an immunocompetent person is quite rare. A 19-year-old healthy Japanese woman presented with painful, umbilicated vesicles and pustules on her genital region, both nipples and on the forearm 10 days after the last sexual contact with her partner who had cold sore at that time. Tzanck test and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of disseminated mucocutaneous HSV infection. She did not have any visceral HSV disease. Skin lesions improved after treatment with acyclovir and erythromycin for seven days. We propose that like herpes gladiatorum, HSV dissemination in this case was acquired by close body contact. A 28-year-old Japanese man presented with grouped erosions and vesicles on an erythematous base affecting the right areola and the surrounding skin. A Tzanck smear from the vesicle revealed giant cells. An initial clinical diagnosis of mammary herpes simplex was considered but to explore the differential diagnosis, viral DNA was amplified by the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method. DNA replication was observed only in varicella zoster virus LAMP mixture, and this confirmed a diagnosis of herpes zoster. The patient was treated with 3000 mg of daily oral valacyclovir for seven days. After antiviral treatment, the lesion had healed and the pain had resolved completely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
