Monitoring the water usage of different appliances and informing consumers about it has been shown to have an impact on their behavior toward drinking water conservation. The most practical and cost-effective way to accomplish this is through a non-intrusive approach, that locally analyzes data received from a flow sensor at the main water supply pipe of a household. In this work, we present two different methods addressing the challenges of disaggregating end-use consumption and classifying consumption events. The first method is model-based (MB) and uses a combination of dynamic time wrapping and statistical bounds to analyze four water end-use characteristics. The second, learning-based (LB) method is data-driven and formulates the problem as a time-series classification problem without relying on a priori identification of events. We perform an extensive computational study that includes a comparison between an MB and an LB method, as well as an experimental study to demonstrate the application of the LB method on an edge computing device. Both methods achieve similar F1 scores (LB: 71.73%, MB: 71.04%) with the LB being more precise. The embedded LB method achieves a slightly higher score (72.01%) while enhancing on-site real-time processing, improving security and privacy and enabling cost savings. A significant challenge when attempting to regulate the spatial-temporal concentration of a disinfectant in a water distribution network is the large and uncertain delay between the time that the chemical is injected at the input node and the time that the concentration is measured at the monitoring output nodes. Uncertain time delays are due to varying water flows, which depend mainly on consumer water demands. Existing approaches cannot guarantee that the concentration of the disinfectant will remain within a specified range at the output, even though bounds on time-delay uncertainty may be known. In this work, given bounded water-flow uncertainty, we use the input–output modeling approach to develop a disinfectant scheduling methodology that guarantees a bounded output disinfectant concentration. The proposed methodology creates an input–output model uncertainty characterization by utilizing estimated bounds on water-quality states using the backtracking approach. An optimization problem is formulated and solved to find an input schedule that keeps the disinfectant concentration within predefined bounds for a specified time horizon. Simulation results in two case studies where water demands varied between ±20% of their nominal value show that the proposed scheduler is able to avoid lower bound violations of disinfectant concentration. Abstract Background Preserving physiological functional capacity (PFC), the ability to perform the activities of daily life, and the ease with which they can be performed, in older adults, defined for this study as ≥ 50 years of age, is an important consideration for maintaining health and independence through the ageing process. Physical activity, and exercise training in particular, has been positively associated with improvement in PFC. In addition to improving aerobic and anaerobic capacity, promoting and preserving functional movement as a component of PFC is an important goal of physical activity, especially for older adults. High-intensity interval training (HIIT), an exercise protocol where repeated bouts of increased intensity are interspersed with active or passive recovery periods, has often been studied as an alternative to traditional moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) exercise, where a continuous intensity is maintained throughout the exercise session. A large body of research has determined that both types of exercise programme are effective in improving measures of aerobic and anaerobic fitness in older adults. However, the effect of the two exercise modalities on functional movement has most often been a secondary outcome, with a range of observational techniques applied for measurement. Objectives The primary objective of this research is to systematically review and meta-analyse published studies of HIIT interventions that measured functional movement in older adults to conclude if HIIT is effective for improving functional movement. A secondary objective is to determine if there are significant differences between HIIT and MICT effect on functional movement. Methods A search strategy of terms locating studies of HIIT interventions, functional movement outcome measures, and older adult population samples was executed on seven digital databases. Randomized and pair-matched trials of > 2 weeks were considered for inclusion. Studies of participants with neurological impairment or studies using combined exercise modality were rejected. Standardized mean difference for functional movement outcome measures was calculated. A meta-analysis of the included studies and subgroups was performed along with study quality (risk of bias and publication bias) evaluation. Results A total of 18 studies were included in random effects model pooled analysis. Subgroup analysis of HIIT versus MICT on functional movement showed a trivial effect in favour of HIIT (ES 0.13, 95% CI [−0.06, 0.33] p = 0.18) and did not achieve statistical significance. However, HIIT showed a medium, statistically significant favourable effect on functional movement versus non-intervention control (ES = 0.60 95% CI [0.24, 0.95] p = 0.001). Further subgroups analysis using singular and multiple functional movement outcome measures showed similar results. Conclusion This meta-analysis indicates that HIIT interventions in older adults may be effective at promoting improvements in functional movement, though it is unclear whether HIIT is superior to MICT.

The basic principles of elemental metabolomics were applied to investigate whether alteration of egg metallome could be achieved after two flavonoids addition, namely hesperidin and naringin in diets of laying hens. A total of 72 hens were divided into six groups: Control (C) (basal diet), E1 (750 mg hesperidin/kg diet), E2 (1500 mg hesperidin/kg diet), N1 (750 mg naringin/kg diet), N2 (1500 mg naringin/kg diet), and VE (200 mg vitamin E/kg diet). The same diet was provided to birds of all treatments, with the exception of added supplements. The diets had the same vitamin and mineral premix; thus, all birds received the same number of elements because no differences on feed intake existed. The egg elemental profile consisted of As, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, V, Zn, and was determined using ICP-MS. Flavonoid supplementation altered the elemental profile. Most notably, in both albumen and yolk, hesperidin increased Ni, Pb, and Sr concentration while it decreased that of Co and Sb. Naringin increased Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and V and lowered the concentration of Co and Sb in both yolk and albumen. Vitamin E supplementation, in comparison to the control, decreased Co in both albumen and yolk and also raised Sb in albumen. Flavonoid presence led to the differences in deposition of certain trace minerals in egg compared to that of hens fed a basal diet or a diet with vitamin E supplementation.

An experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the effects of gestational undernutrition of rabbit does on growth, carcass composition and meat quality of the offsprings. An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of supplementing broiler feed with hesperidin or naringin, on growth performance, carcass characteristics, breast meat quality and the oxidative stability of breast and thigh meat. Two hundred and forty 1-day-old Ross 308 broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 6 groups. One of the groups served as a control (C) and was given commercial basal diets, whereas the other five groups were given the same diets further supplemented with naringin at 0.75 g/kg (N1), naringin at 1.5 g/kg (N2), hesperidin at 0.75 g/kg (E1), hesperidin at 1.5 g/kg (E2) and a-tocopheryl acetate at 0.2 g/kg (E). At 42 days of age, 10 chickens per treatment group were slaughtered for meat quality and oxidative stability assessment. No significant differences were observed among groups in final body weight, carcass weight and internal organs weights (P>0.05) apart from liver that decreased linearly with increased levels of naringin (P-linear0.05). A fundamental pre-requisite for the establishment of a scaleable regional health information network (RHIN) is the development of an architectural framework and tools for the integration of specialized autonomous systems and e-health service platforms supported by an underlying health information infrastructure (HII). In this context, HYGEIAnet, which is the RHIN of Crete in Greece, has identified and utilized a number of critical software components enabling integrated access to clinically significant information, based on an open architecture addressing successfully the various interoperability challenges at hand. HYGEIAnet provides the framework for the reuse of standardized common components and public interfaces, thus enabling integrated and personalized delivery of healthcare.

Purpose: A vertical jump (VJ) is a common task performed in several sports, with the height achieved correlated to skilled performance. Loaded VJs are often used in the training of recreational and professional athletes. The bilateral deficit (BLD), which refers to the difference between the heights achieved by a bilateral jump and the sum of two unilateral jumps, has not been reported for loaded jumps and the findings for unloaded jumps are inconclusive. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to quantify and compare BLD in countermovement (CMJ) and squat jumps (SJ), (b) to explore the effects of an additional 10% of body weight (BW) load on the BLD in both CMJ and SJ, and (c) examine the relationship between magnitude of BLD and jump performance in both jumps and conditions. Methods: Forty participants (22 for CMJ and 18 for SJ) performed a bilateral jump and unilateral jumps on each leg with and without an added load equivalent to 10% of each participant's bodyweight. Results: BLD was evident in all conditions, with CMJ BLD values nearly double those for the SJ. The extra load did not affect the magnitude of BLD. BLD had a significant correlation with unilateral jump height, expect for the 110%BW SJ. Conclusions: BLD is present in SJs and CMJs at both loaded and unloaded conditions. The SJs have about half of the BLD observed in CMJs regardless of additional load. Participants who had higher single leg jumps seemed to also have higher BLDs, but there was no evidence of association between the bilateral jump height and BLD.

The present study focused on propulsive forces applied during tethered swimming. The main aims were to identify asymmetries between dominant and non-dominant arms, quantify the effect of breathing on force application and, explore any association between each variable and swimming performance. Fifteen regional level swimmers completed a maximal front crawl tethered swimming test, with maximal kicking, under four conditions: 1) Dominant arm strokes only, no breathing; 2) non-dominant arm strokes only, no breathing; 3) full stroke, no breathing; 4) full stroke, breathing on the preferred side. The outcome variables were: absolute and normalised (force divided by body mass) minimum, mean and maximum force; stroke cycle time and; impulse. The symmetry index was also calculated, and all variables were correlated with the swimmers' season best times in 50 m front crawl. Some bilateral force asymmetries were found, but they did not always favour the dominant side and were not directly linked with swimming performance. There was no strong evidence that force production is higher on the dominant side or that symmetry in force production affects performance. Despite the longer stroke cycle times when breathing, the breathing actions did not affect force production. Purpose: The aim of this study was fourfold: (1) to quantify acceleration, velocity, and phase overlap for each phase of the stroke cycle (SC) during 200 m front crawl; (2) for each variable, to identify any differences between the four SC phases; (3) to investigate changes in variables during the 200 m; (4) to explore any association between performance and each variable. Methods: Ten swimmers performed a 200 m maximum swim. Four SCs were analyzed, one for each 50 m, using three-dimensional methods. Each SC was split into four phases: entry, pull, push, and recovery. Center of mass (CM) acceleration; maximum, minimum, and average CM velocity; phase duration, and, overlap of a phase of one arm with each phase of the opposite arm were calculated. Results and Conclusion: Phase velocities were positively correlated with performance and decreased during the 200 m. The acceleration data showed high within and between-swimmer variability. When the entry of one arm overlapped with the pull, and sometimes push, phase of the opposite arm, it was propulsive for the whole body. The pull was the slowest phase and overlapped predominantly with the opposite arm's recovery. The push phase was often propulsive for the whole body, regardless of the overlaps with the other arm, and together with the entry were the fastest phases. The recovery of each arm was mostly resistive for the whole body, except the short period of overlap with the opposite arm's push phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Les Mills BODYPUMPTM is a resistance training group exercise class with a low load, high repetition format. Squat training in BODYPUMPTM has two key variables: depth and load. The study aim was to determine the effect of these parameters on the mean and peak EMG amplitude of vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, biceps femoris and lateral gastrocnemius. Ten female BODYPUMPTM participants (age 41 ± 9 years, height 161.9 ± 3.8 cm, mass 67.7 ± 7.0 kg) performed 1 × 7 squats under four conditions, representing every combination of two depths (90° knee angle and 125° knee angle) and two loads (23% bodyweight and 38% bodyweight). The main effect of depth was significant for mean and peak activity of vastus lateralis and gluteus maximus, and peak activity of biceps femoris and lateral gastrocnemius. The main effect of load was significant for mean and peak activity of gluteus maximus and lateral gastrocnemius. There was no depth * load interaction. These data can be used to inform BODYPUMPTM programme design and amplify the training effect of participation in group exercise classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The cerebellum, through its connectivity with the cerebral cortex, plays an integral role in regulating cognitive and affective processes, and its dysregulation can result in neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD)-related behavioural deficits. Identifying cerebellar-cerebral functional connectivity (FC) profiles in children with NDDs can provide insight into common connectivity profiles and their correlation to NDD-related behaviours. 479 participants from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders (POND) network (typically developing = 93, Autism Spectrum Disorder = 172, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder = 161, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder = 53, mean age = 12.2) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and behaviour testing (Social Communication Questionnaire, Toronto Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, and Child Behaviour Checklist – Attentional Problems Subscale). FC components maximally correlated to behaviour were identified using canonical correlation analysis. Results were then validated by repeating the investigation in 556 participants from an independent NDD cohort provided from a separate consortium (Healthy Brain Network (HBN)). Replication of canonical components was quantified by correlating the feature vectors between the two cohorts. The two cerebellar-cerebral FC components that replicated to the greatest extent were correlated to, respectively, obsessive-compulsive behaviour (behaviour feature vectors, r POND-HBN = −0.97; FC feature vectors, r POND-HBN = −0.68) and social communication deficit contrasted against attention deficit behaviour (behaviour feature vectors, r POND-HBN = −0.99; FC feature vectors, r POND-HBN = −0.78). The statistically stable (|z| > 1.96) features of the FC feature vectors, measured via bootstrap re-sampling, predominantly comprised of correlations between cerebellar attentional and control network regions and cerebral attentional, default mode, and control network regions. In both cohorts, spectral clustering on FC loading values resulted in subject clusters mixed across diagnostic categories, but no cluster was significantly enriched for any given diagnosis as measured via chi-squared test (p > 0.05). Overall, two behaviour-correlated components of cerebellar-cerebral functional connectivity were observed in two independent cohorts. This suggests the existence of generalizable cerebellar network differences that span across NDD diagnostic boundaries.

Force platforms (FPs) are regularly used in the biomechanical analysis of sport and exercise techniques, often in combination with image-based motion analysis. Force time data, particularly when combined with joint positions and segmental inertia parameters, can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of movement patterns in sport and exercise. Given that FPs are regularly used in sport and exercise research, not only for data collection, but also for evaluating other biomechanical equipment, the lack of attention paid to the likelihood of errors in their measurements is somewhat surprising. Although the scientific literature for kinematic data has established and consistently reported the estimation and propagation of errors, FP data are often taken as error-free. This study establishes the magnitude of possible measurement errors from a FP typically used in sport and exercise biomechanics, by applying an easy-to-use, time-efficient method. Abstract Neurodevelopmental conditions can be associated with decreased health-related quality of life; however, the predictors of these outcomes remain largely unknown. We characterized the predictors of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a sample of neurodiverse children and youth. We used a cross-sectional subsample from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders Network (POND) consisting of those children and young people in the POND dataset with complete study data (total n = 615; 31% female; age: 11.28 years ± 2.84 years). Using a structural equation model, we investigated the effects of demographics (age, sex, socioeconomic status), core features (Social Communication Questionnaire, Toronto Obsessive Compulsive Scale, Strengths and Weaknesses of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-symptoms and Normal Behavior), co-occurring symptoms (Child Behaviour Checklist), and adaptive functioning (Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System) on HRQoL (KINDL). A total of 615 participants had complete data for this study (autism = 135, ADHD = 273, subthreshold ADHD = 7, obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) = 38, sub-threshold OCD = 1, neurotypical = 161). Of these participants, 190 (31%) identified as female, and 425 (69%) identified as male. The mean age was 11.28 years ± 2.84 years. Health-related quality of life was negatively associated with co-occurring symptoms (B = − 0.6, SE = 0.20, CI (− 0.95, − 0.19), p = 0.004)) and age (B = − 0.1, SE = 0.04, CI (− 0.19, − 0.01), p = 0.037). IntroductionThis study examined the prevalence of functional difficulties and associated factors in Canadian children/youth aged 5 to 17 years diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). MethodsWe analyzed data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (CHSCY), a nationally representative survey of Canadian children/youth that used the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning (WG-SS) to evaluate functioning in six daily tasks. For each functional domain, binary outcomes were derived (no/some difficulty, a lot of difficulty/no ability). We used logistic regression to identify associations between demographic characteristics, educational experiences, and perceived mental and general health and the most common functional difficulties, namely those related to remembering/concentrating, communication and self-care. All estimates were weighted to be representative of the target population. The bootstrap method was used to calculate variance estimates. ResultsAnalysis of the records of 660 children/youth with ASD revealed that the most common functional difficulties were remembering/concentrating (22%; 95% CI: 18–27), communicating (19%; 95% CI: 15–23) and self-care (13%; 95% CI: 10–17). Lower perceived mental health was associated with increased functional difficulties with remembering/concentrating. ASD diagnosis at a lower age and lower perceived general health were associated with increased functional difficulty with communication. Parental expectations for postsecondary education were associated with decreased functional difficulty for self-care. ConclusionOne or more functional difficulties from the WG-SS was present in 39% of Canadian children/youth aged 5 to 17 years with ASD. Functional difficulties with remembering/concentrating, communication and self-care were most common.

IntroductionCette étude porte sur la prévalence des difficultés fonctionnelles et des facteurs connexes chez les enfants et les jeunes canadiens de 5 à 17 ans ayant reçu un diagnostic de trouble du spectre de l'autisme (TSA). MéthodologieNous avons analysé les données tirées de l’Enquête canadienne sur la santé des enfants et des jeunes (ECSEJ) de 2019, une enquête nationale représentative de la population canadienne d’enfants et de jeunes, qui utilisait l’ensemble abrégé de questions sur le fonctionnement du Groupe de Washington (Washington Group Short Set on Functioning, WG-SS) pour évaluer le fonctionnement dans le cadre de six tâches quotidiennes. Pour chaque domaine fonctionnel, des résultats binaires ont été générés (aucune difficulté/quelques difficultés, beaucoup de difficultés/n’y parvient pas du tout). Nous avons ensuite utilisé une régression logistique pour déterminer les associations entre, d’une part, les caractéristiques sociodémographiques, les expériences d’apprentissage et la santé générale et mentale perçue et, d’autre part, les difficultés fonctionnelles les plus courantes, celles liées à la mémoire/concentration, à la communication et aux soins personnels. Toutes les estimations ont été pondérées de façon à être représentatives de la population cible. Nous avons utilisé la méthode « bootstrap » pour établir les estimations de la variance. RésultatsL’analyse des données des 660 enfants et jeunes atteints d’un TSA a révélé que les difficultés fonctionnelles les plus courantes concernaient la mémoire/concentration (22 %; IC à 95 % : 18 à 27), la communication (19 %; IC à 95 % : 15 à 23) et les soins personnels (13 %; IC à 95 % : 10 à 17). Une moins bonne santé mentale perçue était associée à des difficultés fonctionnelles accrues liées à la mémoire/concentration. Un diagnostic de TSA à un plus jeune âge et une moins bonne santé générale perçue étaient associés à des difficultés fonctionnelles accrues liées à la communication. Le fait que les parents avaient des attentes en matière d’études postsecondaires était associé à des difficultés fonctionnelles réduites liées aux de soins personnels. ConclusionL’étude a révélé que 39 % des enfants et des jeunes canadiens de 5 à 17 ans ayant reçu un diagnostic de TSA présentaient au moins une difficulté fonctionnelle citée dans l’ensemble de questions WG-SS, les difficultés fonctionnelles liées à la mémoire/ concentration, à la communication et aux soins personnels étant les plus fréquentes.

A key challenge in designing algorithms for leakage detection and isolation in drinking water distribution systems is the performance evaluation and comparison between methodologies using benchmarks. For this purpose, the Battle of the Leakage Detection and Isolation Methods (BattLeDIM) competition was organized in 2020 with the aim to objectively compare the performance of methods for the detection and localization of leakage events, relying on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) measurements of flow and pressure sensors installed within a virtual water distribution system. Several teams from academia and the industry submitted their solutions using various techniques including time series analysis, statistical methods, machine learning, mathematical programming, met-heuristics, and engineering judgment, and were evaluated using realistic economic criteria. This paper summarizes the results of the competition and conducts an analysis of the different leakage detection and isolation methods used by the teams. The competition results highlight the need for further development of methods for leakage detection and isolation, and also the need to develop additional open benchmark problems for this purpose. State estimation in water distribution networks (WDNs) is a challenging task due to the scarcity of measurements and the presence of several modeling uncertainties. In the literature, pseudo-measurements are often required to obtain an observable model for state estimation, which are highly uncertain and mostly represented by bounded sets. This article proposes two new methods for set-based state estimation in WDNs, considering unknown-but-bounded measurement and model uncertainties to calculate bounds on the system states. A new interval method is proposed based on iterative computation of tight enclosures of the nonlinear head-loss functions, and bounding the solution of the algebraic equations using rescaling. This method, referred to as iterative slope approximation and rescaling (ISAR), is mildly more conservative than the iterative hydraulic interval state estimation (IHISE) method previously proposed by the authors, but significantly more computationally efficient. However, since intervals are not capable of capturing the dependencies between state variables, we propose the use of constrained zonotopes (CZs) as an additional step to both IHISE and ISAR. This yields two new algorithms for set-based state estimation of WDNs, capable of capturing the dependencies between hydraulic states, which result in sets with significantly smaller volumes than intervals. The benefits of CZs are also highlighted when the new enclosures are used for leakage detection. These provide higher leakage detection rates compared to intervals, as demonstrated in two case studies using benchmark WDNs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Previous research has demonstrated heterogeneous adaptive outcomes across the autism spectrum; however, the current literature remains limited in elucidating turning points and associated factors for longitudinal variability (chronogeneity). To address these empirical gaps, we aimed to provide a finer‐grained characterization of trajectories of adaptive functioning from early childhood to adolescence in autism. Methods Our sample (N = 406) was drawn from an inception cohort of children diagnosed Autistic at ages 2–5. Adaptive functioning was assessed with Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS, 2nd Edition) across 6 visits from the time of diagnosis by age 18. Parallel‐process latent growth curve modeling were used to estimate domain‐level VABS trajectories, followed by latent class growth analysis to identify trajectory subgroups. Child characteristics at diagnosis, family demographics, and participation outcomes at adolescence were compared across subgroups. Results Piecewise latent growth models best described VABS trajectories with two turning points identified at around ages 5‐6 and 9–10, respectively reflecting transitions into school age and early adolescence. We parsed four VABS trajectory subgroups that vary by level of functioning and change rate for certain domains and periods. Around 16% of the sample exhibited overall adequate functioning (standard score >85) with notable early growth and social adaptation during adolescence. About 21% showed low adaptive functioning (standard score ≤70), with decreasing slopes by age 6 followed by improvements in communication and daily‐living skills by age 10. The other two subgroups (63% in total) were characterized by adaptive functioning between low and adequate levels, with relatively stable trajectories entering school age. These subgroups differed most in their cognitive ability at diagnosis, household income, and social participation in adolescence. Conclusions We identified key individual and family characteristics and time windows associated with distinct adaptive functioning trajectories, which have important implications for providing timely and tailored supports to Autistic people across developmental stages.

There is an increasing desire to study neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) together to understand commonalities to develop generic health promotion strategies and improve clinical treatment. Common data elements (CDEs) collected across studies involving children with NDDs afford an opportunity to answer clinically meaningful questions. We undertook a retrospective, secondary analysis of data pertaining to sleep in children with different NDDs collected through various research studies. The objective of this paper is to share lessons learned for data management, collation, and harmonization from a sleep study in children within and across NDDs from large, collaborative research networks in the Ontario Brain Institute (OBI). Three collaborative research networks contributed demographic data and data pertaining to sleep, internalizing symptoms, health-related quality of life, and severity of disorder for children with six different NDDs: autism spectrum disorder; attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder; obsessive compulsive disorder; intellectual disability; cerebral palsy; and epilepsy. Procedures for data harmonization, derivations, and merging were shared and examples pertaining to severity of disorder and sleep disturbances were described in detail. Important lessons emerged from data harmonizing procedures: prioritizing the collection of CDEs to ensure data completeness; ensuring unprocessed data are uploaded for harmonization in order to facilitate timely analytic procedures; the value of maintaining variable naming that is consistent with data dictionaries at time of project validation; and the value of regular meetings with the research networks to discuss and overcome challenges with data harmonization. Buy-in from all research networks involved at study inception and oversight from a centralized infrastructure (OBI) identified the importance of collaboration to collect CDEs and facilitate data harmonization to improve outcomes for children with NDDs.

This study examined the relationships between selected kinematic and physiological parameters and their influence on performance during incremental exercise in elite swimmers competing at the international level. Eleven men and ten women (all specialized in 200-m events) performed an incremental 7 x 200-m test in their specialized stroke. Stroke rate (SR), stroke length (SL), velocity (V), and blood lactate concentration (BLa) were measured for each 200 m. In addition to the crosssectional group design, the longitudinal performance of a male swimmer was evaluated by 4 tests during a period of 20 weeks. Stroke rate increased and SL decreased with V, regardless of the age, stroke, or gender of the swimmer. Statistically significant correlations were found between SR and V (p < 0.01; r = 0.66 to 0.99),SR and SL(p < 0.01; r= -0.78 to - 0.99), SL and V (except for women's freestyle and breast-stroke) (p < 0.01; r = -0.67 to -0.98), and BLa and V (p < 0.01; r = 0.7 to 0.96). Changes in SR and SL were not affected by changes in BLa. Similar velocities were produced with different combinations of SR and SL. The fastest times reached in the test were generally slower than expected, and the performance in the test was not associated with competition performance. The case study revealed similar results to those of the group. The test used in this study was informative with respect to identifying the most economical and effective stroke kinematics combination for slow to submaximal velocities. It is possible that the swimming speeds were not maximal in the final 200-m swim because of cumulative fatigue, which is a major limitation for assessing race pace. An additional test that produces velocities similar to those used in competitions would be more useful for the purpose of providing optimal kinematic information specific to racing speeds, which would facilitate performance improvement through regular monitoring in training. IntroductionPrevalence rates of emotional and behavior problems (EBP) in autistic children and youth are high (40–70%), and often cause severe and chronic impairment. Furthermore, autistic children are also more likely to experience family “social-ecological” adversity compared to neurotypically developing peers, including social isolation, child maltreatment, caregiver mental illness, and socioeconomic risk. These family stressors increase the risk of co-occurring EBP among autistic children and can often impede access to evidence-based care, thus amplifying long-term health inequities for autistic children and their caregivers. In the current autism services landscape, there are few scalable, evidence-based programs that adequately address these needs. The Family Check-Up (FCU®) is a brief, strength-based, and tailored family-centered intervention that supports positive parenting and explicitly assesses the social determinants of child and family mental health within an ecological framework. Studies have demonstrated long-term positive child and caregiver outcomes in other populations, but the FCU® has not been evaluated in families of autistic children and youth. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate FCU® implementation within an established, publicly funded Autism Program in Ontario, Canada, with delivery by autism therapists, to demonstrate sustainable effectiveness within real-world settings.MethodsIn this study, we outline the protocol for a hybrid implementation-effectiveness approach with two key components: (1) A parallel-arm randomized controlled trial of N = 80 autistic children/youth (ages 6–17 years) and high levels of EBP and their caregivers. Primary and secondary outcomes include child EBP, and caregiver well-being and parenting. (2) A mixed methods implementation study, to describe facilitators and barriers to implementation of the FCU® within an autism service setting.DiscussionScalable, ecologically focused family-centered interventions offer promise as key components of a public health framework aimed at reducing mental health inequities among autistic children, youth, and their caregivers. Results of this study will inform further program refinement and scale-up.

The estimation of chlorine concentration in water distribution networks is a challenging task due to hydraulic and water‐quality parameter uncertainties. In this work, we propose a methodology for calculating chlorine concentration bounds at node locations of water distribution networks which is suitable for sensor fault and contamination detection purposes. The proposed Backtracking Uncertainty Bounding Algorithm (BUBA) considers known bounds on hydraulic states and water‐quality model parameters to calculate the chlorine concentration bounds. The validity of the calculated bounds is demonstrated using a large number of Monte Carlo simulations on benchmark networks. Moreover, the proposed methodology can be used in conjunction with a real‐time parameter estimation algorithm, as it allows the use of time‐varying bulk reaction coefficients. A parameter estimation algorithm is designed and implemented to approximate the unknown bulk reaction coefficient of water at the sources of the WDN, which are typically water tanks filled with water originating from different sources. The BUBA then uses these time‐varying parameters to improve the chlorine concentration bounds, as demonstrated in a case study with real data from a water transport network. Abstract Defining and measuring progress in adaptation are important questions for climate adaptation science, policy, and practice. Here, we assess the progress of urban adaptation planning in 327 European cities between 2005 and 2020 using three ‘ADAptation plan Quality Assessment’ indices, called ADAQA-1/ 2/ 3, that combine six plan quality principles. Half of the cities have an adaptation plan and its quality significantly increased over time. However, generally, plan quality is still low in many cities. Participation and monitoring and evaluation are particularly weak aspects in urban adaptation policy, together with plan ‘consistency’. Consistency connects impacts and vulnerabilities with adaptation goals, planned measures, actions, monitoring and evaluation, and participation processes. Consistency is a key factor in the overall quality of plans. To help evaluate the quality of plans and policies and promote learning, we suggest incorporating our ADAptation plan Quality Assessment indices into the portfolio of adaptation progress assessments and tracking methodologies.

Abstract Background Heterogeneous mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic are documented in the general population. Such heterogeneity has not been systematically assessed in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). To identify distinct patterns of the pandemic impact and their predictors in ASD/NDD youth, we focused on pandemic-related changes in symptoms and access to services. Methods Using a naturalistic observational design, we assessed parent responses on the Coronavirus Health and Impact Survey Initiative (CRISIS) Adapted For Autism and Related neurodevelopmental conditions (AFAR). Cross-sectional AFAR data were aggregated across 14 European and North American sites yielding a clinically well-characterized sample of N = 1275 individuals with ASD/NDD (age = 11.0 ± 3.6 years; n females = 277). To identify subgroups with differential outcomes, we applied hierarchical clustering across eleven variables measuring changes in symptoms and access to services. Then, random forest classification assessed the importance of socio-demographics, pre-pandemic service rates, clinical severity of ASD-associated symptoms, and COVID-19 pandemic experiences/environments in predicting the outcome subgroups. Results Clustering revealed four subgroups. One subgroup—broad symptom worsening only (20%)—included youth with worsening across a range of symptoms but with service disruptions similar to the average of the aggregate sample. The other three subgroups were, relatively, clinically stable but differed in service access: primarily modified services (23%), primarily lost services (6%), and average services/symptom changes (53%). Distinct combinations of a set of pre-pandemic services, pandemic environment (e.g., COVID-19 new cases, restrictions), experiences (e.g., COVID-19 Worries), and age predicted each outcome subgroup. Limitations Notable limitations of the study are its cross-sectional nature and focus on the first six months of the pandemic. Conclusions Concomitantly assessing variation in changes of symptoms and service access during the first phase of the pandemic revealed differential outcome profiles in ASD/NDD youth. Subgroups were characterized by distinct prediction patterns across a set of pre- and pandemic-related experiences/contexts. Results may inform recovery efforts and preparedness in future crises; they also underscore the critical value of international data-sharing and collaborations to address the needs of those most vulnerable in times of crisis.

This paper discusses the development of Business-as-usual (BAU) and low-emission scenarios for the energy sector in Ethiopia. This is done as part of efforts by the government to develop a Long-term Low Emissions Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) for the country. The process is conducted in consultation with key public and private sectors and civil society stakeholders. The overarching aim of the government is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the country in line with its commitment to the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Keeping the global average temperature increases well below 2° Celsius is essential for a country like Ethiopia, given its vulnerability to the effects of climate change. Other actions taken in this regard are the development and update of the Country's National Determined Contribution (NDC), which sets the ambitious goal of tackling the effects of climate change by achieving a 68% emissions reduction by 2030. The BAU scenario is expected to inform the development of mitigation scenarios backed by policy actions that will ultimately lead to a decrease in emissions in the energy sector, looking towards the target year of 2050. The result of the LT-LEDS BAU scenario points to a pathway that will lead to the increase of emissions to 31 MtCO2e by 2050, while the proposed mitigation scenarios decrease emissions to 2.9 Mt by 2050.

Background Parent and child mental health has suffered during the pandemic and transition phase. Structured and shared parenting may be intervention targets beneficial to families who are struggling with parent or child mental health challenges. Aims First, we investigated associations between structured and shared parenting and parent depression symptoms. Second, we investigated associations between structured and shared parenting and depression, hyperactivity/inattention and irritability symptoms in children. Method A total of 1027 parents in two-parent households (4797 observations total; 85.1% mothers) completed online surveys about themselves and their children (aged 2–18 years) from April 2020 to July 2022. Structured parenting and shared parenting responsibilities were assessed from April 2020 to November 2021. Symptoms of parent depression, child depression, child hyperactivity and inattention, child irritability, and child emotional and conduct problems were assessed repeatedly (one to 14 times; median of four times) from April 2020 to July 2022. Results Parents who reported higher levels of shared parenting responsibilities had lower depression symptoms (β = −0.09 to −0.32, all P < 0.01) longitudinally. Parents who reported higher levels of shared parenting responsibilities had children with fewer emotional problems (ages 2–5 years; β = −0.07, P < 0.05), fewer conduct problems (ages 2–5 years; β = −0.09, P < 0.01) and less irritability (ages 13–18 years; β = −0.27, P < 0.001) longitudinally. Structured parenting was associated with fewer conduct problems (ages 2–5 years; β = −0.05, P < 0.05). Conclusions Shared parenting is beneficial for parent and child mental health, even under chaotic or inflexible life conditions. Structured parenting is beneficial for younger children.

ObjectiveThe objectives of this study were to determine rates of sleep disturbances in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) within and across disorders and compared to typically developing (TD) children and to describe differences above and below the clinical cut-off for sleep disturbances. In addition, we explored the associations between demographic variables, severity of disorder, sleep disturbances, internalizing symptoms, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children with NDDs.MethodWe conducted cross-sectional data analyses of an existing database with community-dwelling children with NDDs (n = 1438) and TD children (n = 140) aged 4–12 years. Parent-reported measures on sleep disturbances using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), internalizing symptoms using the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale, and HRQOL using the KINDL-R were assessed. Hierarchical linear regression examined the associations between demographic variables, severity of disorder, sleep disturbances, internalizing symptoms, and HRQOL in children with NDDs.ResultsChildren with NDDs (8.5 ± 2.1 years, 69.9% M) had significantly greater total sleep disturbance index (TSDI) than TD children [(8.6 ± 2.3 years, 60.0% M) (mean difference = 6.88 [95% CI 5.37, 8.40]; p < 0.001) (n = 838 NDDs (58.3%); n = 120 TD (86.7%)]. Children with severe NDDs reported significantly greater TSDI above the clinical cut-off (i.e., ≥41; CSHQ) than those with less severe NDDs (p < 0.001). Internalizing symptoms (β = −0.082 [95% CI −0.144, −0.019]; p = 0.011) and TSDI (β = −0.226 [95% CI −0.380, −0.073]; p = 0.004) were significantly associated with HRQOL in children with NDDs.ConclusionSurveillance and management of sleep and internalizing symptoms are needed to improve HRQOL in children with NDDs. Commonalities in sleep disturbances for children with NDDs support transdiagnostic interventions to treat sleep.
