To clarify the lifestyle behavior related to body weight gain since the age of 20 years, we explored the lifestyle risk factor, independently associated with excessive weight gain after 20 years of age as compared to those in subjects with a stable weight, with matching of age, gender, and the current body mass index (BMI).Patients and Methods: From baseline data of a general population-based cohort study, we designed a cross-sectional analysis collecting individual data of medical health check-ups and a questionnaire related to lifestyle, including amount of sleep, frequency of eating breakfast, average times per day engaged in walking and sitting in the prior year, and smoking habits. These data were compared between the subjects with weight gain ≥ 10kg (n=3601) and < 10kg (n=3601) after age 20, matched by a propensity score model which included current BMI, age and gender. We used multivariable logistic regressions to assess the lifestyle factor’s association with high weight gain.Results: Participants who gained ≥ 10 kg were significantly more likely to sleep < 5 hours or ≥ 9 hours per night, skip breakfast, engage in walking < 1 hour per day, and sit ≥ 5 hours per day than those who gained < 10kg. Multivariable logistic regressions analyses showed that, with adjusting for potential confounder, the lifestyles with the positive association with high weight gain were skipping breakfast (OR 1.252; 95% CI 1.053– 1.489, vs regularly), long sleeping duration (9 hours/day≤ OR 1.613; 95% CI 1.018– 2.557 vs 5≤-< 7 hours/day), and former smoker (OR 1.163; 95% CI 1.008– 1.343 vs never smoker), while walking duration was negatively associated with high weight gain. Furthermore, despite similar current BMI, participants with weight gain ≥ 10kg had significantly higher values for waist circumference, blood pressure, HbA1c, LDL-C, triglycerides, and hepatic enzyme levels than those with weight gain < 10kg. Similarly, the prevalence rates of hypertension, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and former smoker were higher in the participants with weight gain ≥ 10kg.Conclusion: Major weight gain after 20 years of age was associated with unfavorable lifestyle factors and greater waist circumference, possibly leading to elevated risk for MetS and other non-communicable diseases. Abstract

Scintillators are key components in high-energy x-ray detectors for x-ray computed tomography, which are applied in medical diagnosis, nondestructive testing, and security inspection. Scintillators in x-ray imaging are required to have both high spatial resolution and sensitivity; however, a trade-off between spatial resolution and sensitivity exists. To improve the sensitivity of a scintillator, its thickness must be increased; however, spatial resolution deteriorates with increasing thickness. Here, we developed a well-aligned Tb-doped GdAlO3-αAl2O3 phase-separated scintillator fiber (PSSF) with a diameter of 1.25-μm by a micro-pulling-down method. The luminescence, scintillation, and imaging performances of a grown PSSF sample were evaluated. X-ray-induced radioluminescence measurements of the sample showed Tb3+ 4f–4f emissions in the wavelength range of 470–700 nm, and the maximum emission peak was at 550 nm. The contrast transfer function at 10 lp/mm was 82% for both 270 and 500 μm-thick PSSF samples. We calculated the luminescence index, which is the product of the scintillator's light yield and sensitivity, of the samples and compared their values with commercially available conventional CsI:Tl columnar scintillators. The Tb-doped GdAlO3-αAl2O3 PSSF exhibits higher contrast transfer function and luminescence index values at above 60 keV x-ray region compared with the tested conventional scintillators. Abstract

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is utilized in diverse fields ranging from physics, engineering, to biology for transducing, sensing, and processing various signals. Optical measurement of the SAW provides valuable information since the amplitude and the phase of the displacement field can be measured locally with the resolution limited by the spot size of the optical beam. So far, optical measurement techniques rely on modulation of the optical path, phase, or diffraction associated with SAWs. Here, we demonstrate that SAWs can be measured with an optical polarimeter. We show that the slope of the periodically tilting surface due to the coherently driven SAW is translated into the angle of polarization rotation, which can be straightforwardly calibrated when polarimeters work in the shot-noise-limited regime. The polarimetric measurement of SAWs is, thus, beneficial for quantitative studies of SAW-based technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on Caucasian and Japanese subjects shows a correlation between large normal CAG allele frequencies and the CAG-repeat expansions coinciding with dominantly inherited spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). Dominant SCA types and dentatorubralpallidoluysian atrophy were found primarily in Caucasian and Japanese populations respectively, with prevalences matching comparatively large numbers of normal alleles.

Abstract

This paper deals with the strength and the sealing performance of pipe flange connections combining the bonding force of adhesives with the clamping force of bolts. The epoxy adhesives or anaerobic sealants are bonded at the interface partially instead of gaskets in pipe flange connections. The stress distribution in the epoxy adhesives (anaerobic sealant), which governs the sealing performance, and the variations in axial bolt force are analyzed, using an axisymmetrical theory of elasticity, when an internal pressure is applied to a connection in which two pipe flanges are clamped together by bolts and nuts with an initial clamping force after being joined by epoxy adhesives or anaerobic sealant. In addition, a method for estimating the strength of the combination connection is demonstrated. Experiments are performed and the analytical results are consistent with the experimental results concerning the variation in axial bolt force and the strength of combination connections. It can be seen that the strength of connections increases with a decrease in the bolt pitch circle diameter. Furthermore, it is seen that the sealing performance of such combination connections in which the interface is bonded partially is improved over that of pipe flange connections with metallic gaskets.

42. Intra-articular human deciduous dental pulp stem cell administration vs. pharmacological therapy in experimental osteoarthritis rat model.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare the molecular and morphological effects of diacerein and glucosamine-chondroitin drug treatment and intra-articular injection therapy of human deciduous dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in a rat knee model of induced osteoarthritis (OA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six adult male rats were randomly separated into six groups: Control group (without induction of OA), osteoarthritis group 60 (induction of OA, saline gavage started on day 14 and performed for 60 days, followed by euthanasia), osteoarthritis group (induction of OA and euthanasia after 14 days), diacerein group, glucosamine-chondroitin group, and mesenchymal stem cell group. The drug-treated groups were gavaged with 50 mg/kg of diacerein and 400/500 mg/kg of glucosamine-chondroitin starting on dat 14 for 60 days. The cell therapy-treated group received an intra-articular single dose of 8 × 105 hDPSCs on day 14, and euthanasia was performed after 60 days. Lateral femoral condyles were collected and prepared for immunohistochemistry and light microscopy procedures. RESULTS: The morphological features and immunoexpression of SOX-5, IHH, MMP-8, MMP-13, and Type II collagen were statistically analysed. Our data suggest that hDPSC therapy contributes more actively and effectively in the structural reorganization of lateral femoral condyles. In contrast, the glucosamine-chondroitin sulphate treatment was more effective in inflammatory control, while diacerein showed better results associated with the maintenance of the primordial cartilage. CONCLUSIONS: The positive therapeutic effect of daily administered conventional drugs can be confirmed in a rat model of OA. Abstract

Background: The prognosis of patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal and middle ear has been improved by advances in skull base surgery and multidrug chemoradiotherapy during the last two decades. Methods: Ninety-five patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal and middle ear who were treated between 1998 and 2017 were enrolled. The number of patients with tumour stages T1, T2, T3 and T4 was 15, 22, 24 and 34, respectively. Oncological outcomes and prognostic factors were retrospectively investigated. Results: Among patients with T4 disease, invasion of the brain (p = 0.024), carotid artery (p = 0.049) and/or jugular vein (p = 0.040) were significant predictors of poor prognosis. The five-year overall survival rate of patients with at least one of these factors (T4b) was significantly lower than that of patients without these factors (T4a) (25.5 vs 65.5 per cent, p = 0.049). Conclusion: It is proposed that stage T4 be subclassified into T4a and T4b according to the prognostic factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
