Abstract The Pleiades Volcanic Field is made up of some 20 monogenetic, partly overlapping scoria and spatter cones, erupted in the last 900 ka, cropping out from the ice close to the head of the Mariner Glacier in northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Erupted products vary from hawaiite to trachyte, defining a complete mild Na‐alkaline differentiation trend. Mafic samples are characterized by multi‐elemental patterns typical of OIB magmas, moderately low 87Sr/86Sr (0.7037) and high 143Nd/144Nd (0.51284), with a clear within‐plate affinity, indicating a subcontinental lithospheric source. With increasing SiO2, 87Sr/86Sr ratios increase up to 0.7052 and 143Nd/144Nd decrease to 0.51277, supporting the hypothesis of open‐system evolution, with significant crustal assimilation during fractional crystallization. The erupted volume of most evolved products (∼7 km3), according to fractionation models, suggests that primitive magmas should have been more than 10 times larger, indicating the occurrence of a large magma plumbing system, unexpected for a volcanic field of monogenetic scoria cones. The occurrence of a complete fractionation trend with large magma chambers and large assimilation rate is unusual, if not unique, among the alkali basaltic volcanic fields and it is matched by a climax of activity during the last glacial maximum (30 ka), as indicated by new 40Ar‐39Ar ages (30 ± 3 ka and 25 ± 2 ka) for samples from the two most prominent edifices. Therefore, we hypothesize a role of a thick ice cap in suppressing eruptions and ultimately leading to prolonged magma residence time in the subsurface, favoring significant fractionation coupled with unusual high rates of crustal assimilation.

Thríhnúkagígur Volcano, Iceland, is a composite spatter cone and lava field characteristic of basaltic fissure eruptions. Lava drainback at the end of the eruption left ~60 m of evacuated conduit, and a 4 × 104 m3 cave formed by the erosion of unconsolidated tephra by the feeder dike. Field relationships within the shallow plumbing system provide three-dimensional insight into conduit formation in fissure systems. Petrographic estimates and the relative volumes of the cave and erupted lavas both indicate xenolithic tephra comprises 5–10 % of the erupted volume, which cannot be reproduced by geochemical mixing models. Although crustal xenolith entrainment is not geochemically significant, we posit that this process may be common in the Icelandic crust. The Thríhnúkagígur eruption illustrates how pervasive, poorly consolidated tephra or hyaloclastite can act as a mechanically weak pre-existing structure that provides a preferential pathway for magma ascent and may influence vent location.

Abstract The northern and northwestern margins of the Arabian Plate are a locus of a diffuse and long-lasting (early Miocene to Pleistocene) Na-alkali basaltic volcanism, sourced in the asthenosphere mantle. The upwelling asthenosphere at the Africa–Arabia margin produces very limited magma volumes in the axial zone. Therefore, portions of hot, fertile mantle continue their eastward migration and are stored at shallower depths under the 100-km thick Arabian lithosphere, which is much thinner than the African one (≈175 km): this causes the occurrence and 20-Ma persistence of magma supply under the study area. Erupted basalts sampled a continuous variation of the mantle source, with a striking correlation among temperature, pressure and isotopic composition shifting between two end members: a 100 km-deep, more depleted source, and a 60 km-deep, more enriched one. In particular, we observed an unusual variation in boron isotopes, which in the oceanic domain does not vary between more depleted and more enriched mantle sources. This study shows that, at least in the considered region, subcontinental mantle is more heterogeneous than the suboceanic one, and able to record for very long times recycling of shallow material.

The fourteen numbers of ultrabasic volcanoes eruption in the west of Nowbaran are located in the west margin of Iranian central zone near to the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone. The combination of volcanic material consists mainly of low viscosity lava and in some cases pyroclastic material. According to the petrography and geochemical data, these rocks are nephelinite and melilite-nephelinite. Several chemical characterizations such as low content of SiO2, high rate of CaO and MgO, depleted from HFSE and enrichment of LILE, shown the magma originated from depleted mantle source. Ti and Nb negative anomalies presented the subduction component for this magma source. The Nawbaran magma with sodic-alkaline nature, formed within plate geodynamic environment. The geochemical evidences have shown the magma originated from enrichment garnet-lherzolite mantle with low partial melting (1-3%) in the 90 to 110 km depth of earth surface. Existence of mantle calcite, calcium rich apatite and perovskite whit the high rate of CaO and MgO in the rocks composition signed the carbonated component and carbonate metasomatism is candidate for the evolution of west Nawbaran young magmatism.

Boron is one of the main proxies for seawater-derived fluids in subduction zone volcanics and it is vital to characterise the location and concentration of boron in the oceanic lithosphere. Here the authors show that boron concentration in the mantle of downgoing slabs has been overestimated, because boron is strongly decoupled from water in the hydration process.
