Multiple choice questions (MCQs) are commonly used for assessing students, but medical teachers may lack training in writing them. MCQs often have imperfections called item-writing flaws (IWFs) that can affect students' results and impede objective evaluation of their knowledge. This study aimed to evaluate a guideline-based faculty development intervention on writing MCQs at Levels 1 and 2 of the Kirkpatrick Model. MCQs written by teachers prior and after the intervention were analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's t-test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test as appropriate. In addition, the phenomenological approach was chosen to describe experiences of 10 teachers in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Results showed satisfaction of teachers with the document. They found it helpful in writing MCQs and noticed the requirement for another guidelines. They appreciated it for its briefness and clarity. The statistical analysis of the quality of MCQs before and after the intervention showed that the document contributed to a statistically significant reduction of IWFs. To conclude, our results showed that a guideline document on writing MCQs may serve as a well-received and effective faculty development intervention. The document may be used as a flexible, time-saving, and just-in-time learning method, fitting needs of medical teachers.

Purpose: This study investigates the determinants of audit committee (AC) formation in a semi-mandatory setting of a European economy, in which ownership and control are predominantly in the hands of families and business groups, and the voluntary practice of forming an AC has not been widely accepted.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population. Its progression causes gradual damage to corneal nerves, resulting in decreased corneal sensitivity (CS) and disruption of anterior-eye-surface homeostasis, which is clinically manifested by increased ocular discomfort and dry eye disease (DED). This study included 52 DR patients and 52 sex- and age-matched controls. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) survey, tear film-related parameters, CS, and in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM) of the subbasal plexus were performed. Furthermore, all patients underwent tear sampling for neurotrophin and cytokine analysis. OSDI scores were greater in DR patients than in controls (p = 0.00020). No differences in the Schirmer test score, noninvasive tear film-break-up time (NIBUT), tear meniscus or interferometry values, bulbar redness, severity of blepharitis or meibomian gland loss were found. In the DR group, both the CS (p < 0.001), and the scotopic pupil diameter (p = 0.00008) decreased. IVCM revealed reduced corneal nerve parameters in DR patients. The stage of DR was positively correlated with the OSDI (Rs = +0.51, 95% CI: + 0.35–+0.64, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with IVCM corneal nerve parameters and scotopic pupillometry (Rs = −0.26, 95% CI: −0.44–−0.06, p = 0.0097). We found negative correlations between the OSDI and IVCM corneal innervation parameters. The DR group showed lower tear film-brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels (p = 0.0001) and no differences in nerve growth factor (NGF)-β, neurotrophin (NT)-4, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, or IL-12 concentrations. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-2, IL-8, IL-10, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and interferon (IFN)-γ levels were decreased among patients with DR. Corneal innervation defects have a direct impact on patients' subjective feelings. The evolution of DR appears to be associated with corneal nerve alterations, emphasizing the importance of IVCM. This study aims to characterise TiCN coatings deposited on Ti6Al4V by physical vapour deposition. Findings on surface morphology, geometric structure, adhesion, instrumental hardness, and tribology are presented. Microscopic examination revealed a uniform coating with a thickness of about 1.5 µm and roughness (Sq) equal to 0.13 µm. Mechanical tests showed that the coating deposition increased the hardness of the Ti6Al4V alloy by about 75%. The artificial saliva solution used in the tribological tests reduced the coefficient of friction and the volumetric wear of the tested friction pairs. Microscopic observations of wear tracks after tribological tests allowed for the identification of wear mechanisms: micro-cutting/ploughing wear dominated in both the Ti6Al4V alloy and TiCN coating samples, but wear was much less pronounced overall with the TiCN coating. The study results demonstrate that the deposition of a TiCN coating simultaneously imparts low-friction and anti-wear properties to the surface of titanium alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advanced respiratory failure with tracheostomy requirement is common in heart recipients. The aim of the study is to assess the tracheostomy rate after orthotopic heart transplantation and identify the subgroups of patients with the highest need for tracheostomy and these groups' association with mortality at a single centre through a retrospective analysis of 140 consecutive patients transplanted between December 2012 and July 2018. As many as 28.6% heart recipients suffered from advanced respiratory failure with a need for tracheostomy that was performed after a median time of 11.5 days post-transplant. Tracheostomy was associated with a history of stroke (OR 3.4; 95% CI) 1.32–8.86; p = 0.012), previous sternotomy (OR 2.5; 95% CI 1.18–5.32; p = 0.017), longer cardiopulmonary bypass time (OR 1.01; 95% CI 1.00–1.01; p = 0.007) as well as primary graft failure (OR 6.79; 95% CI2.93–15.71; p < 0.001), need of renal replacement therapy (OR 19.2; 95% 2.53–146; p = 0.004) and daily mean SOFA score up to 72 h (OR 1.50; 95% 1.23–1.71; p < 0.01). One-year mortality was significantly higher in patients requiring a tracheostomy vs. those not requiring one during their hospital stay (50% vs. 16%, p < 0.001). The need for tracheostomy in heart transplant recipients was 30% in our study. Advanced respiratory failure was associated with over 3-fold greater 1-year mortality. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a malignant tumor with a higher prevalence in men and a higher survival rate in transmenopausal women. It exhibits distinct areas influenced by changing environmental conditions. This study examines how these areas differ in the levels of estrogen receptors (ERs) which play an important role in the development and progression of many cancers, and whose expression levels are often correlated with patient survival. This study utilized two research models: an in vitro model employing the U87 cell line and a second model involving tumors resected from patients (including tumor core, enhancing tumor region, and peritumoral area). ER expression was assessed at both gene and protein levels, with the results validated using confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Under hypoxic conditions, the U87 line displayed a decrease in ERβ mRNA expression and an increase in ERα mRNA expression. In patient samples, ERβ mRNA expression was lower in the tumor core compared to the enhancing tumor region (only in males when the study group was divided by sex). In addition, ERβ protein expression was lower in the tumor core than in the peritumoral area (only in women when the study group was divided by sex). Immunohistochemical analysis indicated the highest ERβ protein expression in the enhancing tumor area, followed by the peritumoral area, and the lowest in the tumor core. The findings suggest that ER expression may significantly influence the development of GBM, exhibiting variability under the influence of conditions present in different tumor areas. The paper presents the results of tests on the geometric structure of the surface, hardness and tribological tests of coatings produced by the method of physical vapor deposition (PVD) on the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy. Hardness was determined using MCT3 from Anton Paar, by instrumental indentation. A diamond indenter with Berkovich geometry was used for the measurement.Model tribological tests were carried out in reciprocating motion under conditions of technically dry friction, friction with lubrication of synovial fluid and Ringer’s solution. The counter-sample in the tested friction nodes was a ball of Al2O3 with a diameter of 6 mm. Nanometer hardness measurements showed that as a result of the diamond-like carbon coating (DLC), the hardness increased by an 7-fold. The lowest friction coefficients among all tested friction nodes were obtained for the material combination Ti13Nb13Zr a-C:H - Al2O3 regardless of the conditions of testing. In the case of technically dry friction, the coefficient of friction decreased by 80%, synovial fluid by 70%, and in the case of Ringer’s solution by 88% compared to the results obtained for Ti13Nb13Zr.

Background: The positive effects of prolonged every-other-day (EOD) feeding include decreased body weight and prolonged life span, but also changes in liver metabolism and functions. In the present paper, our aim was to examine the expression of adiponectin (ADIPOQ), leptin, and their receptors (ADIPOR1, ADIPOR2, and LEPR) in the liver tissue of EOD-fed mice in comparison to ad libitum (AL)-treated mice. Methods: After 9 months of EOD treatment, liver tissue was harvested and prepared for analysis. RT-PCR, protein semi-quantitative estimation, and cellular immunolocalization was performed. Results: We noted a decreased expression of leptin in the liver tissue of the EOD male mice in comparison to the AL mice on the protein level. ADIPOQ receptor R1 protein expression was decreased in the liver of EOD-fed male mice, while the expression of ADIPOR2 on the protein level was increased in the EOD animals. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing ADIPOQ and leptin immunolocalization in the liver tissue in a dietary regime experiment. Decreases in leptin expression and IL-6 expression in liver tissue and increases in ADIPOR2 expression may be partly responsible for the beneficial effects of EOD treatment in the liver, including the decrease in inflammation. In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of DLC coatings doped with tungsten (a-C:H:W) coatings obtained using plasma-assisted physical vapor deposition (PVD) on the properties of the 100Cr6 steel. The results of the 100Cr6 steel specimens with and without the coating were compared. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis were used to observe the morphology of the coating surfaces and cross-sections and identify the elements in the coating composition. The contact angle of the investigated surfaces was measured with a tensiometer. Additionally, the effect of the coatings on the tribological properties of lubricated friction pairs was evaluated. Friction tests were performed on a ball-on-disc tribometer under lubrication with cutting fluid. The surface texture of the samples before and after the tribological tests was measured using a confocal profilometer. The results obtained from the tests and analysis allow for the conclusion that the use of DLC coatings a-C:H:W increases the hardness of 100Cr6 steel by three times. The values of the contact angles were indicative of surface hydrophilic characteristics. The tungsten-doped diamond-like coating under friction conditions reduced the coefficient of friction and wear. DLC coatings a-C:H:W lubricated with the cutting fluid improve the mechanical and tribological properties of 100Cr6 steel sliding surfaces under friction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the effect of the type of movement on the tribological properties of an AlTiN coating applied to a disc made of HS6-5-2C steel. Tribological tests were carried out with a tribometer operating on a ball-disc friction apparatus moving in to-and-from as well as in rotary motion. The tests were carried out under technically dry friction conditions, subject to the application of a cutting fluid used during machining in grinding, turning, milling, drilling and cutting processes. A scanning microscope was used to observe the morphology of the surface, the morphology of the AlTiN coating, and to determine its chemical composition and assess wear mechanisms. The topography of the surface was analysed before and after carrying out the friction and wear tests using a confocal microscope with interferometric mode. The results of the provided tests indicate that the cutting fluid used in the tests reduced the coefficient of friction in both rotary and the sliding -- reciprocating motion about 75% and 65% respectively. It has also contributed to a reduction in linear wear in the sliding -- reciprocating motion about 22%. In case of rotary motion, higher values of linear wear about 40% were recorded, due to wear of the counterspecimen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research and development carried out by companies are pivotal for innovative economies of countries, especially in the unpredictable and changing social, economic and political environment. In this context, it is very important to answer, which factors identify the effectiveness of measures in relation to R&D activity and innovativeness in EU countries and how should the degree of development of a country be assessed in terms of R&D activity? The purpose of this article is to verify level of innovativeness and degree of research and development (R&D) activity in EU countries in the years 2014 and 2020 using Hellwig's measure of development. To achieve this, qualitative and quantitative analysis, synthesis, deduction and induction, comparative analysis, and reasoning by analogy of phenomena were employed. The research was conducted on the basis of the expertly selected variables for their relation to R&D activity from a number of sources, such as Eurostat, World Bank Data, etc.. The indicated variables were analysed using statistical methods and then subjected to a linear ordering procedure based on the Hellwig development pattern method. Thanks to the research results, it is possible to indicate areas in which the initiation of activities would have the greatest degree of influence on development of R&D activity, thus influencing the increase in the level of innovativeness of a country. Indicators relating to R&D activity were selected and then used as variables to study the effect of the degree of R&D activity in EU countries in the years 2014 and 2020 on the level of innovativeness of these countries. The conducted research coincides with the results presented in the European Innovation Scoreboard. VR technology is an emerging IT innovation that greatly affects consumer behaviour and consumer perception of products. The aim of this study is to examine how the virtual reality phenomenon can be used as a marketing communication tool and how its usage affects the reception of individual components of a marketing message. The research conducted examined the possible impact of virtual reality on message perception and attitude towards particular offers. Additionally the authors wanted to find out whether there was a relationship between the use of virtual reality and the acceptance of new technologies in marketing communication. To verify the stated hypotheses empirical research was conducted involving an experiment with 150 observations of respondents taking advantage of three different marketing communication tools including: VR presentation with Oculus Rift hardware, video and printed advertisements. The results obtained reveal that VR technology positively and significantly impacts the reception of the offer, the technology involved and the presentation itself.

Simple Summary: In modern, highly industrialized countries, endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological cancer. Endometrial cancer risk has been found to be influenced by a number of variables. The pathogenesis of endometrial cancer is heavily influenced by fatty food consumption in excess, a lack of physical activity and the subsequent development of obesity or diabetes. The first symptoms of endometrial cancer may be unusual vaginal bleeding or pelvic discomfort, but they are also typical of many other diseases. It is important to search for new biomarkers that could help detect endometrial cancer, even if it shows symptoms in its early stages. PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α, EGF and ANG-2 are growth factor proteins. We investigated whether growth factor proteins can be clinically useful diagnostic markers in endometrial cancer. The study's objective was to identify the clinical relevance of the proteins under investigation. We made a comparison between the serum protein concentrations of people with endometrial cancer and those with non-cancerous endometrial lesions. (1) Background: It is relevant to find new diagnostic biomarkers for endometrial cancer. This study aimed to investigate whether PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α, EGF and ANG-2 could be considered new useful markers for diagnosis and survival of endometrial cancer. (2) Methods: A total of 93 women diagnosed with endometrial cancer (EC) and 66 patients with non-cancerous endometrial lesions (NCEL) were included in this study. (3) Results: Median serum levels of PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α, EGF and ANG-2 were significantly higher in the EC group compared to the NCEL group (for PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α and ANG-2, p = 0.0000; for EGF, p = 0.0186). The cut-off level of PDGF-AB was set at 127.69 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 87.1% and a specificity of 66.67% (AUC = 0.78, p < 0.000001). The cut-off level of PDGF-BB was set at 207.86 ng/L with a sensitivity of 82.8% and a specificity of 75.76% (AUC = 0.85, p < 0.000001). The cut-off level of TGF-α was set at 33.85 ng/L with a sensitivity of 82.8% and a specificity of 75.76% (AUC = 0.82, p < 0.000001). The cut-off level of EGF was set at 934.76 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 83.87% and a specificity of 28.79% (AUC = 0.61, p = 0.018472). The cut-off level of ANG-2 was set at 3120.68 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 72.04% and a specificity of 93.94% (AUC = 0.87, p < 0.000001). Car tire manufacturing can be the cause of numerous environmental hazards. Harmful emissions from the production process are an acute danger to human health as well as the environment. To mitigate these unwanted consequences, manufacturers employ the eco-balance analysis at the product designing and development stage, when formulating general development strategies, and increasingly when investigating the entire product lifecycle management process. Since the negative effects of products are considered in a broader range of implications, it has become necessary to extend the traditional scope of analytical interest onto the production, use, and end-of-life stages. This work investigates the manufacturing of passenger car tires executed with traditional and modern manufacturing technologies. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of tires reported in this study involved three LCA methods: Eco-Indicator 99, Cumulative Energy Demand (CED) and the scientific assessment methods developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Global Warming Potential (IPCC). LCA as a tool for environmental analysis can be carried out for the entire life cycle or its individual phases. The implementation of the work made it possible to demonstrate that as a result of the identification of the main sources of negative impacts, it is possible to propose ways to minimize these impacts in the car tire manufacturing process. The results indicate that the most damaging impact is the depletion of natural resources, which play a key role in the production process of car tires.

This paper evaluates surface roughness effects on the properties of a-C:H:Si coatings obtained using plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD). Prior to coating deposition, the surfaces of the samples were subjected to grinding (Ra = 0.25) and then polishing (Ra = 0.05) or sandblasting (Ra = 1.41). Microscopic observations, measurements of thickness, wettability, surface topography, and tribological tests were used to characterize the substrate. The coating microstructure, thickness, and chemical content were investigated using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The geometric structure of the surface was examined using confocal microscopy before and after tribological tests. Tribological studies used a ball-on-disk sliding configuration in reciprocating motion under dry friction and cutting oil lubrication. The values of the contact angles were indicative of surface hydrophilic characteristics. Compared with the sandblasted surfaces, the adhesion strength of the coatings deposited on the polished surfaces was found to be higher. The coatings contributed to the improvement of friction and wear parameters. Under dry friction, a-C:H:Si coating friction coefficients and linear and volumetric wear on the polished surface were reduced compared with the sandblasted surface, respectively, by 10%, 83%, and 85%. In addition, the lubricant contributed to reducing the friction coefficients of the coating applied to the sandblasted sample compared with the polished sample without the coating by about 94%. Microscopic observations of wear traces allowed the determination of wear mechanisms; in the case of Ti13Nb13Zr, it was tribochemical wear through oxidation, while in the case of coatings, scratching and microcutting dominated. Diabetes is one of the greatest healthcare problems; it requires an appropriate approach to the patient, especially when it concerns pregnant women. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic condition in pregnancy that shares many features with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM and GDM induce oxidative stress, which activates cellular stress signalling. In addition, the risk of diabetes during pregnancy can lead to various complications for the mother and foetus. It has been shown that physical activity is an important tool to not only treat the negative effects of diabetes but also to prevent its progression or even reverse the changes already made by limiting the inflammatory process. Physical activity has a huge impact on the immune status of an individual. Various studies have shown that regular training sessions cause changes in circulating immune cell levels, cytokine activation, production and secretion and changes in microRNA, all of which have a positive effect on the well-being of the diabetic patient, mother and foetus. Periodontitis (PD) is a chronic inflammatory disease that is initiated by oral microorganisms. The pathogens induce the production of cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-17, which enhances the inflammatory response and progression of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine the expression and localization in gingival tissue of IL-17A and IL-17B in patients with periodontitis. This study included 14 patients with periodontal disease and 14 healthy subjects without periodontal disease as a control group. There were no statistically significant differences in the expression of IL-17A mRNA between patients with periodontitis and control subjects. The expression of IL-17B mRNA was statistically significantly lower in patients with periodontitis in comparison with healthy subjects (p < 0.048). The expression of IL-17A correlated significantly with the approximal plaque index. The IL-17B expression in gingival tissue correlated with the clinical attachment level. This correlation reached borderline statistical significance (p = 0.06). In immunohistochemical analysis, we have shown the highest expression of IL-17 protein in inflamed connective tissue, epithelium, and granulation tissue from gingival biopsy specimens from patients with periodontitis. In biopsy specimens from healthy individuals, no IL-17 was found in the epithelium, while an expression of IL-17 was found in the connective tissue. The results of our study confirm the involvement of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Our results suggest that an increase in IL-17 protein expression in the gingival tissue of patients with periodontitis occurs at the post-translational stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the study was a comparative analysis of the burden of lung cancer in urban and rural areas in the Świętokrzyskie Province in the years 1999–2010. The material for the study accounted for information about the number of new cases of lung cancer obtained from the Świętokrzyskie Cancer Registration Office in Kielce and data from the Central Statistical Office concerning the number of deaths due to lung cancer in the years 1999–2010. Crude and age-standardized incidence, mortality, and potential years of life lost rates were calculated separately for groups of men and women in urban and rural areas. A comparative analysis of coefficients in urban and rural areas based on Rate Ratio (RR) and Rate Difference (RD) was performed by using the Health Disparities Calculator. The average annual incidence of lung cancer among men was 18% lower in the urban population than in the rural, while the mortality rate was 16% lower. For women, the incidence and mortality rates were higher in urban areas as opposed to rural areas – by 48% and 54% respectively. The comparative analysis of the burden of lung cancer showed great diversity between urban and rural populations in the Świętokrzyskie Province.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an abundant steroid and precursor of sex hormones. During aging, the reduction in DHEA synthesis causes a significant depletion of estrogens and androgens in different organs, such as the ovaries, brain, and liver. Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a cholestatic liver disease that begins with immune-mediated bile duct damage, and is followed by liver fibrosis, and finally, cirrhosis. PBC primarily affects postmenopausal women, with an average age of diagnosis of 65 years, but younger women are also affected. Here, we analyzed the levels of DHEA, estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3) in the PBC sera of females at an age of diagnosis under 40 (n = 37) and above 65 (n = 29). Our results indicate that in PBC patients at an age of diagnosis under 40, E2 was significantly lower compared to that in healthy women. In contrast, the levels of DHEA and E3 were in a normal range. Furthermore, ELISA assays revealed that in PBC patients at an age of diagnosis above 65, the levels of DHEA, E2, and E3 significantly declined in comparison to those in younger patients. In addition, flow cytometry analysis showed that the level of IL-8 significantly decreased while the level of TNF-α increased in older PBC patients compared to younger ones. Moreover, we showed for the first time that the sulfonated form of DHEA, DHEA-S, reduces the levels of both pro-inflammatory interleukins, IL-8 and TNF-α, in PBC-like cholangiocytes (H69-miR506), while it diminishes the level of the pro-fibrotic interleukin, IL-13, in hepatocytes (Hep-G2). Finally, we demonstrated that the expression of the pro-fibrotic agent TGF-β significantly increased in both the early (F0–F3) and cirrhotic (F4) stages of PBC, and this elevation was accompanied by higher α-SMA expression. Ferulic acid (FA) has been widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry due to its, inter alia, antioxidant, antiaging and anti-inflammatory effects This compound added to cosmetic preparations can protect skin because of its photoprotective activity. However, the usefulness of FA as a therapeutic agent is limited due to its low solubility and bioavailability. The paper presents the synthesis, identification, and physicochemical properties of new FA derivatives with propyl esters of three amino acids, glycine (GPr[FA]), L-leucine (LPr[FA]), and L-proline (PPr[FA]). The NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, DSC, and TG analysis were used as analytical methods. Moreover, water solubility of the new conjugates was compared with the parent acid. Both ferulic acid and its conjugates were introduced into hydrogel and emulsion, and the resulting formulations were evaluated for stability. Additionally, in vitro penetration of all studied compounds from both formulations and for comparative purposes using Franz diffusion cells was evaluated from the solution in 70% (v/v) ethanol. Finally, cytotoxicity against murine fibroblasts L929 was tested. All of the analyzed compounds permeated pig skin and accumulated in it. LPr[FA] and PPr[FA] were characterized by much better permeability compared to the parent ferulic acid. Additionally, it was shown that all the analyzed derivatives are characterized by high antioxidant activity and lack of cytotoxicity. The conversion of kinetic energy from wind and solar radiation into electricity during the operation of wind and photovoltaic power plants causes practically no emissions of chemical compounds that are harmful to the environment. However, the production of their materials and components, as well as their post-use management after the end of their operation, is highly consumptive of energy and materials. For this reason, this article aims to assess the life cycle of a wind and photovoltaic power plant in the context of the sustainable development of energy systems. The objects of the research were two actual technical facilities—a 2 MW wind power plant and a 2 MW photovoltaic power plant, both located in Poland. The analysis of their life cycle was carried out on the basis of the LCA (life-cycle assessment) method, using the ReCiPe 2016 calculation procedure. The impact of the examined renewable energy systems was assessed under 22 impact categories and 3 areas of influence (i.e., human health, ecosystems, and resources), and an analysis was conducted for the results obtained as part of three compartments (i.e., air, water, and soil). The life cycle of the wind power plant was distinguished by a higher total potential negative environmental impact compared to the life cycle of the photovoltaic power plant. The highest levels of potential harmful impacts on the environment in both life cycles were recorded for areas of influence associated with negative impacts on human health. Emissions to the atmosphere accounted for over 90% of all emissions in the lifetimes of both the wind and the photovoltaic power plants. On the basis of the obtained results, guidelines were proposed for pro-ecological changes in the life cycle of materials and elements of the considered technical facilities for renewable energy sources, aimed at better implementation of the main assumptions of contemporary sustainable development (especially in the field of environmental protection). Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a malignant glioma, difficult to detect and with the lowest survival rates among gliomas. Its greater incidence among men and its higher survival rate among premenopausal women suggest that it may be associated with the levels of androgens. As androgens stimulate the androgen receptor (AR), which acts as a transcription factor, the aim of this study was the investigate the role of AR in the progression of GBM. The study was conducted on tissues collected from three regions of GBM tumors (tumor core, enhancing tumor region, and peritumoral area). In addition, an in vitro experiment was conducted on U-87 cells under various culture conditions (necrotic, hypoxic, and nutrient-deficient), mimicking the conditions in a tumor. In both of the models, androgen receptor expression was determined at the gene and protein levels, and the results were confirmed by confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry. AR mRNA expression was higher under nutrient-deficient conditions and lower under hypoxic conditions in vitro. However, there were no differences in AR protein expression. No differences in AR mRNA expression were observed between the tested tumor structures taken from patients. No differences in AR mRNA expression were observed between the men and women. However, AR protein expression in tumors resected from patients was higher in the enhancing tumor region and in the peritumoral area than in the tumor core. In women, higher AR expression was observed in the peritumoral area than in the tumor core. AR expression in GBM tumors did not differ significantly between men and women, which suggests that the higher incidence of GBM in men is not associated with AR expression. In the group consisting of men and women, AR expression varied between the regions of the tumor: AR expression was higher in the enhancing tumor region and in the peritumoral area than in the tumor core, showing a dependence on tumor conditions (hypoxia and insufficient nutrient supply). The aim of the article is to verify a research tool in the form of a questionnaire and diagnose the reasons why entities entitled to tax preferences are not using them. A pilot study was carried out on a group of 100 entities from the IT sector in Dolnośląskie voivodship with the use of the CATI technique. The analysis of the results obtained in the survey indicates that about 80% of the surveyed entities do not use tax preferences despite meeting the prerequisites for their use. The article presents two main groups of barriers that have been identified, i.e. those concerning the conditions for using preferences (statutory solutions – small tax benefits, limited scope, lack of uniform interpretations, etc.) and those of a general nature due to the lack of knowledge and awareness that such instruments are beneficial for enterprises. Due to the fact that the conducted survey was a pilot study, no significant statistical correlations have been identified. However, the validity of the research tool has been confirmed.
