One of the institutional challenges of taking in large numbers of international graduate students is supporting their academic literacy skills. To accommodate a large population of international students, Japanese universities offer various services to support their academic studies and life-related issues, such as hiring international student advisors, offering Japanese language courses, and implementing peer-support programs. As a type of academic support for writing for international students, writing centers have caught the attention of universities in the last decade. To examine the institutional role of the writing center at a Japanese university, this study employs a language management lens to compare the beliefs and interests among administrators, tutors, and international students in improving international students' Japanese writing. Interviews with the three groups of participants displayed incongruences between the administrators' interests aligned with institutional goals, the educational philosophy of the writing center, and international students' language learning needs. The findings point to the tutors' crucial role as language specialists who inform organized language management, and the necessity for collaboration between academic support units and faculty members in providing sufficient academic socialization environments for international students.

This paper draws on autoethnographical insights and genre analysis in offering an introductory guide for writing a manuscript-style master's level thesis or doctoral dissertation in TESOL and Applied Linguistics fields. We report on our own recent experiences writing, defending, and preparing for publication from our own manuscript-style dissertations during and following our doctoral study, both conducted at the same major Canadian research university. While other work in TESOL and Applied Linguistics areas have addressed the manuscript-style format amidst more general discussions of thesis and dissertation writing (e.g., Paltridge, 2002; Paltridge & Starfield; 2007), this article concentrates specifically on the unique characteristics of this dissertation structure and the genre-features, processes, and considerations around planning, composing, presenting, and publishing in this format. The intended audience of this paper is primarily graduate students and supervisors in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, although other stakeholders involved in graduate-level writing across various disciplines can also benefit from our discussion. Our central goal in writing this article is therefore to provide an introductory discussion regarding the nuances inherent in this format of dissertation compared to other traditional monograph forms.

We focused on the production of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-containing microbial lipids by Aurantiochytrium sp. using of defatted soybean (DS) as a nitrogen source. Defatted soybean is a plant biomass that could provide a sustainable supply at a low cost. Results showed that Aurantiochytrium sp. could not directly assimilate the DS as a nitrogen source but could grow well in a medium containing DS fermented with rice malt. When cultivated in a fermented DS (FDS) medium, Aurantiochytrium sp. showed vigorous growth with the addition of sufficient sulfate and chloride ions as inorganic nutrients without seawater salt. A novel isolated Aurantiochytrium sp. 6-2 showed 15.8 ± 3.4 g/L DHA productivity (in 54.8 ± 12.1 g/L total fatty acid production) in 1 L of the FDS medium. Therefore, DHA produced by Aurantiochytrium sp. using FDS enables a stable and sustainable DHA supply and could be an alternative source of natural DHA derived from fish oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The writing center is a common form of academic writing support in Canadian and U.S. universities (Moussu & David, 2015). With its nonproofreading policy, some scholars have indicated the service may be less effective for international students who require more explicit assistance on surface-level features in their academic writing (Harris & Silva, 1993; Myers, 2003). However, these discussions often omit or insufficiently address international graduate students as a distinctive population (Phillips, 2013). To address this gap, this article presents results from two complementary case studies involving the use of writing centers by three second language (L2) Chinese graduate students (two doctoral and one master's) at a research-intensive Canadian university. Drawing on a second language socialization theoretical framework (Duff, 2007; Zuengler & Cole, 2005), the researchers examine the role of the university's writing center in the participants' enculturation into academic discourses, practices, identities, and communities. Data indicate that international graduate students spend considerable time and effort seeking out writing support to improve academic practices. Only the master's student was able to make full use of the writing center tutorials due to her strategic socialization of the tutor. Implications are provided to minimize student burden and maximize specialized writing support for L2 graduate students.

ω3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids are currently obtained mainly from fisheries; thus, sustainable alternative sources such as oleaginous microorganisms are required. Here, we describe the isolation, characterization, and application of 3 novel ω3 desaturases with ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acid–producing activity at ordinary temperatures (28 °C). First, we selected Pythium sulcatum and Plectospira myriandra after screening for oomycetes with high eicosapentaenoic acid/arachidonic acid ratios and isolated the genes psulω3 and pmd17 , respectively, which encode ω3 desaturases. Subsequent characterization showed that PSULω3 exhibited ω3 desaturase activity on both C18 and C20 ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids while PMD17 exhibited ω3 desaturase activity exclusively on C20 ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Expression of psulω3 and pmd17 in the arachidonic acid–producer Mortierella alpina resulted in transformants that produced eicosapentaenoic acid/total fatty acid values of 38% and 40%, respectively, at ordinary temperatures. Increased pressures of internationalization compel universities worldwide to search for successful education models and frameworks that can enhance their entrepreneurial status and international competitiveness. This study aims to explore the political interests, power dynamics, and consequences of transferring educational systems, models, and concepts across context, by focusing on the popularity of the writing center (a writing support service originating in the United States) in Japan. To examine the political and socio-economic factors that motivated a Japanese university to establish a writing center, I trace the process of the writing center's establishment from documents and interviews with five university staff involved in the planning. Policy borrowing as a conceptual framework is employed to illuminate the ways in which participants exercised their agency and justified the writing center in relation to the university's internationalization mission. Given the findings, I discuss the impulses, externalizing potentials, and reference societies that attracted administrators to the idea of the writing center and critically examine the policy borrowing practices that aim to internationalize higher education. The oleaginous fungus Mortierella alpina is known to accumulate eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) only when cultivated at a low temperature (below 15°C). Here, we investigated EPA production at an ordinary temperature (28°C) by expressing the Saprolegnia diclina D17 desaturase gene (sdd17m) in M. alpina ST1358, an ω3-desaturation activity-defective mutant derived from M. alpina 1S-4. Expression of the exogenous gene was confirmed by EPA accumulation in transformants at both 28 and 12°C. The EPA content in total lipids produced by transformants was over 20% at 28°C. Bench-scale fermentation with a 5-L jar fermentor showed that EPA content reached 26.4% of total fatty acids, and EPA production reached 1.8 g/L. This is the first study to report the accumulation of EPA in M. alpina at an ordinary temperature, and provide a platform technology for the industrial production of EPA using M. alpina as a promising source for EPA. Thirty-four strains of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-producing microorganisms were newly isolated from brackish areas in Japan. These strains showing various compositions of fatty acids. Especially, the fatty acids produced by one of the strains, named D31, had a high DHA content (over 60 % of the total fatty acids) and the simple fatty acid composition (16:0, 18:0, 18:1 and DHA without any other polyunsaturated acids). Although most oleaginous microorganisms accumulate DHA as triacylglycerol, the strain D31 accumulated DHA mainly as a polar lipid (79.4 % of total DHA), especially as phosphatidylcholine (71.4 % of polar DHA). This strain D31 was identified as a related species of Crypthecodinium cohnii on the basis of phylogenetic analysis. Crypthecodinium sp. D31 showed high DHA productivity when cultivated in a medium containing glycerol as the carbon source and a mixture of yeast extract and polypeptone as the nitrogen sources, with a salinity that was equivalent to 50 % of that of seawater and a pH in the acidic range (

Ricinoleic acid (RA), a hydroxyl fatty acid, is suitable for medical and industrial uses and is produced in high-oil-accumulating organisms such as castor bean and the ergot fungus Claviceps. We report here the efficient production of RA in a transgenic diatom Chaetoceros gracilis expressing the fatty acid hydroxylase gene (CpFAH) from Claviceps purpurea. In transgenic C. gracilis, RA content increased at low temperatures, reaching 2.2 pg/cell when cultured for 7 d at 15 °C, without affecting cell growth, and was enhanced (3.3 pg/cell) by the co-expression of a palmitic acid-specific elongase gene. Most of the accumulated RA was linked with monoestolide triacylglycerol (ME TAG), in which one RA molecule was esterified to the α position of the glycerol backbone and was further esterified at its hydroxy group with a fatty acid or second RA moiety, or 1-OH TAG, in which RA was esterified to the glycerol backbone. Overall, 80% of RA was accumulated as ME TAGs. Furthermore, exogenous RA-methyl ester suppressed the growth of wild-type diatoms in a dose-dependent manner and was rapidly converted to ME TAG. These results suggest that C. gracilis masks the hydroxyl group and accumulates RA as the less-toxic ME TAG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
