Discovered decades ago, the quantum Hall effect remains one of the most studied phenomena in condensed matter physics and is relevant for research areas such as topological phases, strong electron correlations and quantum computing.sup.1-5. The quantized electron transport that is characteristic of the quantum Hall effect typically originates from chiral edge states--ballistic conducting channels that emerge when two-dimensional electron systems are subjected to large magnetic fields.sup.2. However, whether the quantum Hall effect can be extended to higher dimensions without simply stacking two-dimensional systems is unknown. Here we report evidence of a new type of quantum Hall effect, based on Weyl orbits in nanostructures of the three-dimensional topological semimetal Cd.sub.3As.sub.2. The Weyl orbits consist of Fermi arcs (open arc-like surface states) on opposite surfaces of the sample connected by one-dimensional chiral Landau levels along the magnetic field through the bulk.sup.6,7. This transport through the bulk results in an additional contribution (compared to stacked two-dimensional systems and which depends on the sample thickness) to the quantum phase of the Weyl orbit. Consequently, chiral states can emerge even in the bulk. To measure these quantum phase shifts and search for the associated chiral modes in the bulk, we conduct transport experiments using wedge-shaped Cd.sub.3As.sub.2 nanostructures with variable thickness. We find that the quantum Hall transport is strongly modulated by the sample thickness. The dependence of the Landau levels on the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field and on the sample thickness agrees with theoretical predictions based on the modified Lifshitz-Onsager relation for the Weyl orbits. A series of mononuclear manganese(III) complexes [Mn(X-sal2-323)](ReO4) (X = 5 Cl, 1; X = 5 Br, 2; X = 3,5 Cl, 3; X = 3,5 Br, 4; and X = 5 NO2, 5), containing hexadentate ligands prepared using the condensation of N,N′-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and 5- or 3,5-substituted salicylaldehyde, has been synthesized. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical analyses, and theoretical calculations have been used to explore the role of various ligand substituents in the spin-state switching behavior of the prepared manganese(III) complexes. All five complexes consist of an analogous distorted octahedral monocationic MnN4O2 surrounding offered by the flexible hexadentate ligand and ReO4− as the counter anion. However, a disordered water molecule was detected in complex 4. Complexes 1 (X = 5 Cl) and 5 (X = 5 NO2) show gradual and complete spin-state switching between the high-spin (HS) (S = 2) and the low-spin (LS) (S = 1) state with T1/2 values of 146 and 115 K respectively, while an abrupt and complete transition at 95 K was observed for complex 2 (X = 5 Br). Alternatively, complex 3 (X = 3, 5 Cl) exhibits an incomplete and sharp transition between the HS and LS states at 104 K, while complex 4 (X = 3, 5 Br) (desolvated) remains almost LS up to 300 K and then displays gradual and incomplete SCO at a higher temperature. The nature of the spin-state switch and transition temperature suggest that the structural effect (cooperativity) plays a more significant role in comparison with the electronic effect coming from various substituents (Cl, Br, and NO2), which is further supported by the detailed structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies. Photodetector based on two‐dimensional (2D) materials is an ongoing quest in optoelectronics. 2D photodetectors are generally efficient at low illuminating power but suffer severe recombination processes at high power, which results in the sublinear power‐dependent photoresponse and lower optoelectronic efficiency. The desirable superlinear photocurrent is mostly achieved by sophisticated 2D heterostructures or device arrays, while 2D materials rarely show intrinsic superlinear photoresponse. This work reports the giant superlinear power dependence of photocurrent based on multilayer Ta2NiS5. While the fabricated photodetector exhibits good sensitivity (3.1 mS W−1per □) and fast photoresponse (31 µs), the bias‐, polarization‐, and spatial‐resolved measurements point to an intrinsic photoconductive mechanism. By increasing the incident power density from 1.5 to 200 µW µm−2, the photocurrent power dependence varies from sublinear to superlinear. At higher illuminating conditions, prominent superlinearity is observed with a giant power exponent of γ = 1.5. The unusual photoresponse can be explained by a two‐recombination‐center model where density of states of the recombination centers (RC) effectively closes all recombination channels. The photodetector is integrated into camera for taking photos with enhanced contrast due to superlinearity. Non-Hermitian systems have been widely explored in platforms ranging from photonics to electric circuits. A defining feature of non-Hermitian systems is exceptional points (EPs), where both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Tropical geometry is an emerging field of mathematics at the interface between algebraic geometry and polyhedral geometry, with diverse applications to science. Here, we introduce and develop a unified tropical geometric framework to characterize different facets of non-Hermitian systems. We illustrate the versatility of our approach using several examples and demonstrate that it can be used to select from a spectrum of higher-order EPs in gain and loss models, predict the skin effect in the non-Hermitian Su--Schrieffer--Heeger model, and extract universal properties in the presence of disorder in the Hatano--Nelson model. Auâ€"Ag nanostructures comprising of ∼1 nm Ag nanoparticles embedded into an Au matrix show several unconventional optical, electric and magnetic properties. Here, we review progress made towards the preparation of these materials as well as analysis of their structure. Further, electrical and magnetic transitions in these materials are discussed. Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials have been discovered with tunable magnetism and orbital-driven nodal-line features. Controlling the 2D magnetism in exfoliated nanoflakes via electric/magnetic fields enables a boosted Curie temperature (T C) or phase transitions. One of the challenges, however, is the realization of high T C 2D magnets that are tunable, robust and suitable for large scale fabrication. Here, we report molecular-beam epitaxy growth of wafer-scale Fe3+XGeTe2 films with T C above room temperature. By controlling the Fe composition in Fe3+XGeTe2, a continuously modulated T C in a broad range of 185–320 K has been achieved. This widely tunable T C is attributed to the doped interlayer Fe that provides a 40% enhancement around the optimal composition X = 2. We further fabricated magnetic tunneling junction device arrays that exhibit clear tunneling signals. Our results show an effective and reliable approach, i.e. element doping, to producing robust and tunable ferromagnetism beyond room temperature in a large-scale 2D Fe3+XGeTe2 fashion. WTe2, as a type-II Weyl semimetal, has 2D Fermi arcs on the (001) surface in the bulk and 1D helical edge states in its monolayer. These features have recently attracted wide attention in condensed matter physics. However, in the intermediate regime between the bulk and monolayer, the edge states have not been resolved owing to its closed band gap which makes the bulk states dominant. Here, we report the signatures of the edge superconductivity by superconducting quantum interference measurements in multilayer WTe2 Josephson junctions and we directly map the localized supercurrent. In thick WTe2 (⁠|$\sim 60{\rm{\ nm}})$|⁠ , the supercurrent is uniformly distributed by bulk states with symmetric Josephson effect (⁠|$| {I_c^ + (B)} | {=} | {I_c^ - (B)} |\ $|⁠). In thin WTe2 (10 nm), however, the supercurrent becomes confined to the edge and its width reaches up to |$1.4{\rm{\ \mu m\ }}$| and exhibits non-symmetric behavior |$| {I_c^ + (B)} | \ne | {I_c^ - (B)} |$|⁠. The ability to tune the edge domination by changing thickness and the edge superconductivity establishes WTe2 as a promising topological system with exotic quantum phases and a rich physics. Owing to the coupling between open Fermi arcs on opposite surfaces, topological Dirac semimetals exhibit a new type of cyclotron orbit in the surface states known as Weyl orbit. Here, by lowering the carrier density in Cd3As2 nanoplates, we observe a crossover from multiple-frequency to single-frequency Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations when subjected to out-of-plane magnetic field, indicating the dominant role of surface transport. With the increase of magnetic field, the SdH oscillations further develop into quantum Hall state with non-vanishing longitudinal resistance. By tracking the oscillation frequency and Hall plateau, we observe a Zeeman-related splitting and extract the Landau level index as well as sub-band number. Different from conventional two-dimensional systems, this unique quantum Hall effect may be related to the quantized version of Weyl orbits. We present a class of Rashba systems in hexagonal semiconducting compounds, where an electrical control over spin-orbital texture is provided by their bulk ferroelectricity. Our first-principles calculations reveal a number of such materials with large Rashba coefficients. We, furthermore, show that strain can drive a topological phase transition in such materials, resulting in a ferroelectric topological insulating state. We study with first-principles methods the interplay between bulk and surface Dirac fermions in three dimensional Dirac semimetals. By combining density functional theory with the coherent potential approximation, we reveal a topological phase transition in Na3Bi1-xSbx and Cd3[As1-xPx]2 alloys, where the material goes from a Dirac semimetal to a trivial insulator upon changing Sb or P concentrations. Tuning the composition allows us to engineer the position of the bulk Dirac points in reciprocal space. Interestingly, the phase transition coincides with the reversal of the band ordering between the conduction and valence bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the effect of potential barriers in the form of step edges on the scattering properties of Bi2 Se3 (111) topological surface states by means of large-scale ab initio transport simulations. Our results demonstrate the suppression of perfect backscattering, while all other scattering processes, which do not entail a complete spin and momentum reversal, are allowed. Furthermore, we find that the spin of the surface state develops an out-of-plane component as it traverses the barrier. Our calculations reveal the existence of quasibound states in the vicinity of the surface barriers, which appear in the form of an enhanced density of states in the energy window corresponding to the topological state. For double barriers we demonstrate the formation of quantum well states. To complement our first-principles results we construct a two-dimensional low-energy effective model and illustrate its shortcomings. We demonstrate giant magnetoresistance in Fe/MoS2/Fe junctions by means of ab initio transport calculations. We show that junctions incorporating either a monolayer or a bilayer of MoS2 are metallic and that Fe acts as an efficient spin injector into MoS2 with an efficiency of about 45%. This is the result of the strong coupling between the Fe and S atoms at the interface. For junctions of greater thickness, a maximum magnetoresistance of ∼300% is obtained, which remains robust with the applied bias as long as transport is in the tunneling limit. A general recipe for improving the magnetoresistance in spin valves incorporating layered transition metal dichalcogenides is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate that a quantum spin Hall current, spontaneously generated at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator, acts as a source of spin pumping for a magnetic impurity with uniaxial anisotropy. One can then manipulate the impurity spin direction by means of an electrical current without using either magnetic electrodes or an external magnetic field. Furthermore we show that the unique properties of the quantum spin Hall topological state have profound effects on the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum of the impurity. For low current densities inelastic spin-flip events do not contribute to the conductance. As a consequence the conductance steps, normally appearing at voltages corresponding to the spin excitations, are completely suppressed. In contrast an intense current leads to spin pumping and generates a transverse component of the impurity spin. This breaks the topological phase yielding to the conductance steps. In this work we study the topologically protected states of the Sb(111) surface by using ab initio transport theory. In the presence of a strong surface perturbation we obtain standing-wave states resulting from the superposition of spin-polarized surface states. By Fourier analysis, we identify the underlying two dimensional scattering processes and the spin texture. We find evidence of resonant transmission across surface barriers at quantum well state energies and evaluate their lifetimes. Our results are in excellent agreement with experimental findings. We also show that despite the presence of a step edge along a different high-symmetry direction, the surface states exhibit unperturbed transmission around the Fermi energy for states with near to normal incidence. We investigate Andreev reflection in two-dimensional heterojunctions formed by a superconductor in contact with a topological insulator ribbon either possessing or breaking time-reversal symmetry. Both classes of topological insulators exhibit perfect Andreev reflection, which is robust against disorder. This is assigned to topologically protected edge states. In the time-reversal symmetric case we show that doping one of the ribbon edges with magnetic impurities suppresses one Andreev channel, while no such suppression is seen in the broken symmetry situation. Based on this observation, we suggest a tabletop transport experiment able to distinguish between the two types of topological insulators, which does not involve the direct measurement of the material band structure. We propose a four-terminal device designed to manipulate by all electrical means the spin of a magnetic adatom positioned at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator. We show that an electrical gate, able to tune the interface resistance between a quantum spin Hall insulator and the source and drain electrodes, can switch the device between two regimes: one where the system exhibits spin pumping and the other where the adatom remains in its ground state. The recent discovery of hidden spin polarization emerging in bulk electronic states of specific nonmagnetic crystals is a fascinating phenomenon, though hardly explored yet. Here, we study from a theoretical perspective nonmagnetic BaNiS2, recently suggested to exhibit a giant Rashba-like spin-orbit splitting of the bulk bands, despite the absence of heavy elements. We employ density functional theory and Green's functions calculations to reveal the exact spin textures of both bulk and surface. We predict unambiguous signatures of spin-polarized electronic states at the surface, which reflect the bulk Rashba splitting and which could be experimentally measured with sufficient resolution: this would constitute a clear report of a bulk-Rashba-induced spin splitting at the surface of centrosymmetric crystals. Competing orders widely exist in many material systems, such as superconductivity, magnetism, and ferroelectricity; LaCrSb3 is a highly anisotropic magnetic material in which the spins are aligned ferromagnetically in one direction and canted antiferromagnetically in another in the Cr-Sb chains. Hole doping with Sr2+ and Ca2+ in the La site suppresses the antiferromagnetic correlations and transforms the anisotropic magnetic order into a ferromagnetic lattice in all directions. First-principles density functional theory calculations show that the canted magnetic order becomes energetically less favorable compared to the FM order upon hole doping. We propose that illumination with light provides a useful platform for creating tunable semimetals. We show that by shining light on semimetals with a line degeneracy, one can convert them to a point-node semimetal. These point nodes are adjustable, and their position can be controlled by simply rotating the incident light beam. Expanding the library of known inorganic materials with functional electronic or magnetic behavior is a long-standing goal in condensed matter physics and materials science. Recently, the transition metal chalcogenides including selenium and sulfur have been of interest because of their correlated-electron properties, as seen in the iron-based superconductors and the transition metal dichalcogenides. However, the chalcogenide chemical space is less explored than that of oxides, and there is an open question of whether there may be new materials heretofore undiscovered. We perform a systematic combined theoretical and experimental search over ternary phase diagrams that are empty in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database containing cations, transition metals, and one of selenium or sulfur. In these 27 ternary systems, we use a probabilistic model to reduce the likelihood of false negative predictions, which results in a list of 24 candidate materials. We then conduct a variety of synthesis experiments to check the candidate materials for stability. While the prediction method did obtain previously unknown compositions that are predicted stable within density functional theory, none of the candidate materials formed in our experiments. We come to the conclusion that these phase diagrams are "empty" in the case of bulk synthesis, but it remains a possibility that alternate synthesis routes may produce some of these phases. The appearance of topologically protected states at the surface of an ordinary insulator is a rare occurrence and to date only a handful of materials are known for having this property. An intriguing question concerns the possibility of forming topologically protected interfaces between different materials. Here we propose that a topological phase can be transferred to graphene by proximity with the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3. By using density functional and transport theory, we prove that, at the verge of the chemical bond formation, a hybrid state forms at the graphene/Bi2Se3 interface. The state has Dirac-cone-like dispersion at the T point and a well defined helical spin texture, indicating its topologically protected nature. We study impurity scattering in the normal and d-wave superconducting states of line nodal semimetals and show that, due to additional scattering phase space available for impurities on the surface, the quasiparticle interference pattern acquires an extended character instead of a discrete collection of delta function peaks. Moreover, using the T-matrix formalism, we demonstrate that the conventional behavior of a scalar impurity in a d-wave superconductor breaks down on the surface of a line nodal semimetal in the quasi-flat-band limit.
