7. Performance evaluation of methane oxidation catalyst for marine gas-engine in actual exhaust and simulated gas.

Abstract

To reduce methane slip from marine gas engines installed in gas fuelled ships, it is necessary to understand the effects of exhaust composition and temperature on the activity of the methane oxidation catalysts in the marine gas engine exhaust. A comparative study was performed to evaluate catalyst performance in both actual engine exhaust and the simulated gas under the same flow conditions. The test using actual exhaust gas test showed that despite the lower exhaust temperatures during low load operation, the catalyst exhibited an extremely high performance, achieving approximately 100% CH4 conversion. In contrast, at high load, despite high exhaust temperatures, the CH4 conversion was decreased to 50-60%. In the simulated gas test showed that the catalyst' activity was declined with increasing concentration of H2O and NO, whereas it was improved by CH4 and CO oxidation. The results showed that high CH4 concentrations under low load conditions enhanced catalyst activity owing to the exothermic reaction, which increased the catalyst temperature despite the low exhaust temperature and the presence of H2O vapour. Furthermore, during actual engine operation, the catalytic performance at a high load was improved by controlling the air excess ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The CRISPR-Cas system is a prokaryotic host defense system against genetic elements. The Type III-B CRISPR-Cas system of the bacterium Thermus thermophilus, the TtCmr complex, is composed of six different protein subunits (Cmr1-6) and one crRNA with a stoichiometry of Cmr112131445361:crRNA1. The TtCmr complex copurifies with crRNA species of 40 and 46 nt, originating from a distinct subset of CRISPR loci and spacers. The TtCmr complex cleaves the target RNA at multiple sites with 6 nt intervals via a 5' ruler mechanism. Electron microscopy revealed that the structure of TtCmr resembles a "sea worm" and is composed of a Cmr2-3 heterodimer "tail," a helical backbone of Cmr4 subunits capped by Cmr5 subunits, and a curled "head" containing Cmr1 and Cmr6. Despite having a backbone of only four Cmr4 subunits and being both longer and narrower, the overall architecture of TtCmr resembles that of Type I Cascade complexes.

Abstract

This paper aims to clarify how the informational appeal (abstract vs. concrete) of ethical products can be matched to consumers. We tested the attitudes and behaviors of consumers towards ethical products. The hypotheses are based on construal level theory. Higher moral concerns are related to an abstract mindset, while lower moral concerns are associated with a concrete mindset. The findings showed that each of the hypotheses was supported: consumers who are more likely to make charitable donations have positive attitudes toward ethical products (H1); consumers who are more likely to make charitable donations are more likely to respond to abstract appeal information (H2); and consumers who are less likely to make charitable donations will be more likely to respond to concrete appeal information (H3). The findings suggest that marketers’ approach to the use of informational appeals should be determined by consumers’ moral concern type.

Abstract

In this study, we developed an automatic protein hydrolysis system using strong cation-exchange resins as solid acid catalysts. Examining several kinds of inorganic solid acids and cation-exchange resins, we found that a few cation-exchange resins worked as acid catalysts for protein hydrolysis when heated in the presence of water. The most efficient resin yielded amounts of amino acids that were over 70% of those recovered after conventional hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid and resulted in amino acid compositions matching the theoretical values. The solid-acid hydrolysis was automated by packing the resin into columns, combining the columns with a high-performance liquid chromatography system, and heating them. The amino acids that constitute a protein can thereby be determined, minimizing contamination from the environment. 10.1021/ac101718x

Abstract

The distance dependence of the diffusion constant in hyaluronan (HA) aqueous solution, measured by pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG-NMR) and photochemical quenching techniques, was obtained in two extreme cases above and below the pore dimension of HA solution. Quantitative discussion that compares the obtained characteristic distance of diffusion with the pore size, clarifies the role of the nano-microstructure of HA solution forming small pores surrounded by the polymer chain networks.
