In this work, eddy diffusivity is derived from the energy spectra for the stable and convective regimes in the planetary boundary layer. The energy spectra are obtained from a spectral model for the inertial subrange that considers the anomalous behavior of turbulence. This spectrum is expressed as a function of the Hausdorff fractal dimension. The diffusivity eddies are employed in a classical Eulerian dispersion model, where the derivatives are of integer order and in fractional dispersion model, where the derivatives are of fractional order. The eddy diffusivity proposed considers the anomalous nature of geophysical turbulent flow. The results obtained with the fractional and classic dispersion models using the eddy diffusivity proposed is satisfactory when compared with the experimental data of the Prairie Grass and Hanford experiments in a stable regime, and the Copenhagen experiment in a convective regime.

We recently proposed a new technique of plasma tailoring by laser-driven hydrodynamic shockwaves generated on both sides of a gas jet [J.-R. Marqu\`es et al., Phys. Plasmas 28, 023103 (2021)]. In the continuation of this numerical work, we studied experimentally the influence of the tailoring on proton acceleration driven by a high-intensity picosecond-laser, in three cases: without tailoring, by tailoring only the entrance side of the ps-laser, or both sides of the gas jet. Without tailoring the acceleration is transverse to the laser axis, with a low-energy exponential spectrum, produced by Coulomb explosion. When the front side of the gas jet is tailored, a forward acceleration appears, that is significantly enhanced when both the front and back sides of the plasma are tailored. This forward acceleration produces higher energy protons, with a peaked spectrum, and is in good agreement with the mechanism of Collisionless Shock Acceleration (CSA). The spatio-temporal evolution of the plasma profile was characterized by optical shadowgraphy of a probe beam. The refraction and absorption of this beam was simulated by post-processing 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the plasma tailoring. Comparison with the experimental results allowed to estimate the thickness and near-critical density of the plasma slab produced by tailoring both sides of the gas jet. These parameters are in good agreement with those required for CSA.

We present the use of grounding airbridge arrays to trim the frequency of microwave coplanar-waveguide (CPW) resonators post fabrication. This method is compatible with the fabrication steps of conventional CPW airbridges and crossovers and increases device yield by allowing compensation of design and fabrication uncertainty with $100~\mathrm{MHz}$ range and $10~\mathrm{MHz}$ resolution. We showcase two applications in circuit QED. The first is elimination of frequency crowding between resonators intended to readout different transmons by frequency-division multiplexing. The second is frequency matching of readout and Purcell-filter resonator pairs. Combining this matching with transmon frequency trimming by laser annealing reliably achieves fast and high-fidelity readout across 17-transmon quantum processors., Comment: 8 pages and 6 figures

Minimizing leakage from computational states is a challenge when using many-level systems like superconducting quantum circuits as qubits. We realize and extend the quantum-hardware-efficient, all-microwave leakage reduction unit (LRU) for transmons in a circuit QED architecture proposed by Battistel et al. This LRU effectively reduces leakage in the second- and third-excited transmon states with up to $99\% $ efficacy in $220~\mathrm{ns}$, with minimum impact on the qubit subspace. As a first application in the context of quantum error correction, we demonstrate the ability of multiple simultaneous LRUs to reduce the error detection rate and to suppress leakage buildup within $1\%$ in data and ancilla qubits over 50 cycles of a weight-2 parity measurement., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; typos corrected

Even though the electromagnetic counterpart AT2017gfo to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 is powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei, only few tentative identifications of light r-process elements have been made so far. One of the major limitations for the identification of heavy nuclei is incomplete or missing atomic data. While substantial progress has been made on lanthanide atomic data over the last few years, for actinides there has been less emphasis, with the first complete set of opacity data only recently published. We perform atomic structure calculations of neodymium $(Z=60)$ as well as the corresponding actinide uranium $(Z=92)$. Using two different codes (FAC and HFR) for the calculation of the atomic data, we investigate the accuracy of the calculated data (energy levels and electric dipole transitions) and their effect on kilonova opacities. For the FAC calculations, we optimise the local central potential and the number of included configurations and use a dedicated calibration technique to improve the agreement between theoretical and available experimental atomic energy levels (AELs). For ions with vast amounts of experimental data available, the presented opacities agree quite well with previous estimations. On the other hand, the optimisation and calibration method cannot be used for ions with only few available AELs. For these cases, where no experimental nor benchmarked calculations are available, a large spread in the opacities estimated from the atomic data obtained with the various atomic structure codes is observed.We find that the opacity of uranium is almost double the neodymium opacity., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures. Artificial neural networks are becoming an integral part of digital solutions to complex problems. However, employing neural networks on quantum processors faces challenges related to the implementation of non-linear functions using quantum circuits. In this paper, we use repeat-until-success circuits enabled by real-time control-flow feedback to realize quantum neurons with non-linear activation functions. These neurons constitute elementary building blocks that can be arranged in a variety of layouts to carry out deep learning tasks quantum coherently. As an example, we construct a minimal feedforward quantum neural network capable of learning all 2-to-1-bit Boolean functions by optimization of network activation parameters within the supervised-learning paradigm. This model is shown to perform non-linear classification and effectively learns from multiple copies of a single training state consisting of the maximal superposition of all inputs., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures, 3 tables

The propagation and energy coupling of intense laser beams in plasmas are critical issues in laser-driven inertial confinement fusion. Applying magnetic fields to such a setup has been evoked to enhance fuel confinement and heating, and mitigate laser energy losses. Here we report on experimental measurements demonstrating improved transmission and increased smoothing of a high-power laser beam propagating in an underdense magnetized plasma. We also measure enhanced backscattering, which our simulations show is due to hot electrons confinement, thus leading to reduced target preheating.

Type-III-burst radio signals can be mimicked in the laboratory via laser-plasma interaction. Instead of an electron beam generating Langmuir waves (LW) in the interplanetary medium, the LWs are created by a laser interacting with a millimeter-sized plasma through the stimulated Raman instability. In both cases, the LWs feed the Langmuir decay instability which scatters them in several directions. The resulting LWs may couple to form electromagnetic emission at twice the plasma frequency, which has been detected in the interplanetary medium, and recently in a laboratory laser experiment [Marqu\`es et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 135001 (2020)]. This article presents the first numerical analysis of this laser configuration using particle-in-cell simulations, providing details on the wave spectra that are too difficult to measure in experiments. The role of some parameters is addressed, with a focus on laser intensity, in order to illustrate the behavior of the electromagnetic emission's angular distribution and polarization.

We realize a suite of logical operations on a distance-two logical qubit stabilized using repeated error detection cycles. Logical operations include initialization into arbitrary states, measurement in the cardinal bases of the Bloch sphere, and a universal set of single-qubit gates. For each type of operation, we observe higher performance for fault-tolerant variants over non-fault-tolerant variants, and quantify the difference through detailed characterization. In particular, we demonstrate process tomography of logical gates, using the notion of a logical Pauli transfer matrix. This integration of high-fidelity logical operations with a scalable scheme for repeated stabilization is a milestone on the road to quantum error correction with higher-distance superconducting surface codes., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The generation of thin and high density plasma slabs at high repetition rate is a key issue for ultra-high intensity laser applications. We present a scheme to create such plasma slabs, based on the propagation and collision in a gas jet of two counter-propagating blast waves (BW). Each BW is launched by a sudden and local heating induced by a nanosecond laser beam that propagates along the side of the jet. The resulting cylindrical BW expands perpendicular to the beam. The shock front, bent by the gas jet density gradient, pushes and compresses the plasma toward the jet center. By using two parallel ns laser beams, this scheme enables to tailor independently two opposite sides of the jet, while avoiding the damage risks associated with counterpropagating laser beams. A parametric study is performed using two and three dimensional hydrodynamic, as well as kinetic simulations. The BWs bending combined with the collision in a stagnation regime increases the density by more than 10 times and generates a very thin (down to few microns), near to over-critical plasma slab with a high density contrast (> 100), and a lifetime of a few hundred picoseconds. Two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study the influence of plasma tailoring on proton acceleration by a high-intensity sub-picosecond laser pulse. Tailoring the plasma not only at the entrance but also the exit side of the ps-pulse enhances the proton beam collimation, increases significantly the number of high energy protons, as well as their maximum energy.

We present a new analysis of the multiple star V1200 Centauri based on the most recent observations for this system. We used the photometric observations from the Solaris network and the TESS telescope, combined with the new radial velocities from the CHIRON spectrograph and those published in the literature. We confirmed that V1200 Cen consists of a 2.5-day eclipsing binary orbited by a third body. We derived the parameters of the eclipsing components, which are $M_{Aa} = 1.393\pm0.018\,$M$_\odot$, $R_{Aa} = 1.407\pm0.014\,$R$_\odot$ and $T_{{\rm eff},Aa} = 6\,588\pm58\,$K for the primary, and $M_{Ab} = 0.863\,3\pm0.008\,1\,$M$_\odot$, $R_{Ab} = 1.154\pm0.014\,$R$_\odot$ and $T_{{\rm eff},Ab} = 4\,475\pm68\,$K for the secondary. Regarding the third body, we obtained significantly different results than previously published. The period of the outer orbit is found to be 180.4 days, implying a minimum mass $M_B = 0.871\pm0.020\,$M$_\odot$. Thus, we argue that V1200 Cen is a quadruple system with a secondary pair composed of two low-mass stars. Finally, we determined the ages of each eclipsing component using two evolution codes, namely MESA and CESTAM. We obtained ages of 16-18.5$\,$Myr and 5.5-7$\,$Myr for the primary and the secondary, respectively. In particular, the secondary appears larger and hotter than predicted at the age of the primary. We concluded that dynamical and tidal interactions occurring in multiples may alter the stellar properties and explain the apparent non-coevality of V1200 Centauri., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 7 tables and 11 figures

We introduce the sudden variant (SNZ) of the Net Zero scheme realizing controlled-$Z$ (CZ) gates by baseband flux control of transmon frequency. SNZ CZ gates operate at the speed limit of transverse coupling between computational and non-computational states by maximizing intermediate leakage. The key advantage of SNZ is tuneup simplicity, owing to the regular structure of conditional phase and leakage as a function of two control parameters. We realize SNZ CZ gates in a multi-transmon processor, achieving $99.93\pm0.24\%$ fidelity and $0.10\pm0.02\%$ leakage. SNZ is compatible with scalable schemes for quantum error correction and adaptable to generalized conditional-phase gates useful in intermediate-scale applications., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures and 3 tables

Solar analogues are important stars to study for understanding the properties of the Sun. Evolutionary modeling, combined with seismic and spectroscopic analysis, becomes a powerful method to characterize stellar intrinsic parameters, such as mass, radius, metallicity and age.However, these characteristics, relevant for other aspects of astrophysics or exoplanetary system physics for example, are difficult to obtain with a high precision and/or accuracy. The goal of this study is to characterize the two solar analogues HD42618 and HD43587, observed by CoRoT. In particular, we aim to infer precise mass, radius, and age, using evolutionary modeling constrained by spectroscopic, photometric, and seismic analysis. These stars show evidences of being older than the Sun but with a relatively large lithium abundance. We present the seismic analysis of HD42618, and the modeling of the two solar analogs HD42618 andHD43587 using the CESTAM stellar evolution code. Models were computed to reproduce the spectroscopic (effective temperature and metallicity) and seismic (mode frequencies) data,and the luminosity of the stars, based on Gaia parallaxes. We infer very similar values of mass and radius for both stars compared to the literature, within the uncertainties, and reproduce correctly the seismic constraints. For HD42618, the modeling shows it is slightly less massive and older than the Sun. For HD43587, it confirms it is more massive and older than the Sun,in agreement with previous results. A new experimental platform based on laser-plasma interaction is proposed to explore the fundamental processes of wave coupling at the origin of interplanetary radio emissions. It is applied to the study of electromagnetic (EM) emission at twice the plasma frequency ($2\omega_p$) observed during solar bursts and thought to result from the coalescence of two Langmuir waves (LWs). In the interplanetary medium, the first LW is excited by electron beams, while the second is generated by electrostatic decay of Langmuir waves. In the present experiment, instead of an electron beam, an energetic laser propagating through a plasma excites the primary LW, with characteristics close to those at near-Earth orbit. The EM radiation at $2\omega_p$ is observed at different angles. Its intensity, spectral evolution and polarization confirm the LW-coalescence scenario., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. When modelling stars with masses larger than 1.2Msun with no observed chemical peculiarity, atomic diffusion is often neglected because, on its own, it causes unrealistic surface abundances compared with those observed. The reality is that atomic diffusion is in competition with other transport processes. The purpose of this study is to quantify the opposite or conjugated effects of atomic diffusion and rotationally induced mixing in stellar models of low mass stars. Our second goal is to estimate the impact of neglecting both rotational mixing and atomic diffusion in stellar parameter inferences for stars with masses larger than 1.3Msun. Using the AIMS code, we infer the masses and ages of a set of representative artificial stars for which models were computed with the CESTAM evolution code, taking into account rotationally induced mixing and atomic diffusion, including radiative accelerations. We show that for masses lower than 1.3Msun, rotation dominates the transport of chemical elements, and strongly reduces the effect of atomic diffusion, with net surface abundance modifications similar to solar ones. At larger mass, atomic diffusion and rotation are competing equally. Above 1.44Msun, atomic diffusion dominates in stellar models with initial rotation smaller than 80km.s-1 producing a chemical peculiarity which is not observed in Kepler-legacy stars. This indicates that a transport process of chemical elements is missing. Importantly, neglecting rotation and atomic diffusion (including radiative accelerations) in the models, when inferring the parameters of F-type stars, may lead to errors of 5%, 2.5% and 25% respectively for stellar masses, radii and ages. Laser plasma amplification of sub-picosecond pulses above the Joule level is demonstrated, a major milestone for this scheme to become a solution for the next-generation of ultra-high intensity lasers. By exploring over 6 orders of magnitude the influence of the incident seed intensity on Brillouin laser amplification, we reveal the importance of a minimum intensity to ensure an early onset of the self-similar regime, and a large energy transfer with a very high efficiency, up to 20%. Evidence of energy losses of the seed by spontaneous backward Raman is found at high amplification. The first three-dimensional envelope simulations of the sub-picosecond amplification were performed, supplemented by one-dimensional PIC simulations. Comparisons with the experimental results demonstrate the capability of quantitative predictions on the transferred energy. The global behavior of the amplification process, is reproduced, including the evolution of the spatial profile of the amplified seed.

The energy distributions of Ta ions produced in a nanosecond laser-heated plasma at 4$\times$10$^{15}$ W/cm$^{2}$ are experimentally and theoretically investigated. They are measured far from the target with an electrostatic spectrometer and charge collectors. Shadowgraphy and interferometry are used to characterize the plasma dynamics in the first nanoseconds of the plasma expansion for electron densities ranging from 10$^{18}$ to 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. The experimental data clearly show two components in the energy distributions which depend on the ion charge states. These components are discussed in light of fluid and kinetic descriptions of the expanding plasma. In particular, quantitative comparisons with calculations performed with 3D hydrodynamic (Troll) and 1D3V Particle In Cell (XooPIC) codes demonstrate that a double layer created at the plasma-vacuum interface plays a crucial role in the acceleration of the highest charge state ions at high energy., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review E

The CoRoT and Kepler missions have provided high-quality measurements of the frequency spectra of solar-like pulsators, enabling us to probe stellar interiors with a very high degree of accuracy by comparing the observed and modeled frequencies. However, the frequencies computed with 1D models suffer from systematic errors related to the poor modeling of the uppermost layers of stars. These biases are what is commonly named the near surface effect. The dominant effect is related to the turbulent pressure that modifies the hydrostatic equilibrium and thus the frequencies. This has already been investigated using grids of 3D RMHD simulations, which also were used to constrain the parameters of the empirical correction models. However, the effect of metallicity has not been considered so far. We study the impact of metallicity on the surface effect across the HR diagram, and provide a method for accounting for it when using the empirical correction models. We computed a grid of patched 1D stellar models with the stellar evolution code CESTAM in which poorly modeled surface layers have been replaced by averaged stratification computed with the 3D RMHD code CO5BOLD. We found that metallicity has a strong impact on the surface effect: keeping T_eff and log g constant, the frequency residuals can vary by up to a factor two. Therefore, the influence of metallicity cannot be neglected. We found that a correct way of accounting for it is to consider the surface Rosseland mean opacity. It allowed us to give a physically-grounded justification as well as a scaling relation for the frequency differences at nu_max as a function of T_eff, log g and kappa. Finally, we provide prescriptions for the fitting parameters of the correction functions. We show that the impact of metallicity through the Rosseland mean opacity must be taken into account when studying and correcting the surface effect., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. Chemical element transport processes are among the crucial physical processes needed for precise stellar modelling. Atomic diffusion by gravitational settling nowadays is usually taken into account, and is essential for helioseismic studies. On the other hand, radiative accelerations are rarely accounted for, act differently on the various chemical elements, and can strongly counteract gravity in some stellar mass domains. In this study we aim at determining whether radiative accelerations impact the structure of solar-like oscillating main-sequence stars observed by asteroseismic space missions. We implemented the calculation of radiative accelerations in the CESTAM code using the Single-Valued Parameter method. We built and compared several grids of stellar models including gravitational settling, but some with and others without radiative accelerations. We found that radiative accelerations may not be neglected for stellar masses larger than 1.1~M$_{\odot}$ at solar metallicity. The difference in age due to their inclusion in models can reach 9\% for the more massive stars of our grids. We estimated that the percentage of the PLATO core program stars whose modelling would require radiative accelerations ranges between 33 and 58\% depending on the precision of the seismic data. We conclude that, in the context of Kepler, TESS, and PLATO missions, which provide (or will provide) high quality seismic data, radiative accelerations can have a significant effect when inferring the properties of solar-like oscillators properly. This is particularly important for age inferences. However, the net effect for each individual star results from the competition between atomic diffusion including radiative accelerations and other internal transport processes. The NASA Kepler space telescope has detected solar-like oscillations in several hundreds of single stars, thereby providing a way to determine precise stellar parameters using asteroseismology. In this work, we aim to derive the fundamental parameters of a close triple star system, HD 188753, for which asteroseismic and astrometric observations allow independent measurements of stellar masses. We used six months of Kepler photometry available for HD 188753 to detect the oscillation envelopes of the two brightest stars. For each star, we extracted the individual mode frequencies by fitting the power spectrum using a maximum likelihood estimation approach. We then derived initial guesses of the stellar masses and ages based on two seismic parameters and on a characteristic frequency ratio, and modelled the two components independently with the stellar evolution code CESTAM. In addition, we derived the masses of the three stars by applying a Bayesian analysis to the position and radial-velocity measurements of the system. Based on stellar modelling, the mean common age of the system is $10.8 \pm 0.2\,$Gyr and the masses of the two seismic components are $M_A =$ $0.99 \pm 0.01\,M_\odot$ and $M_{Ba} =$ $0.86 \pm 0.01\,M_\odot$. From the mass ratio of the close pair, $M_{Bb}/M_{Ba} = 0.767 \pm 0.006$, the mass of the faintest star is $M_{Bb} =$ $0.66 \pm 0.01\,M_\odot$ and the total seismic mass of the system is then $M_{syst} =$ $2.51 \pm 0.02\,M_\odot$. This value agrees perfectly with the total mass derived from our orbital analysis, $M_{syst} =$ $2.51^{+0.20}_{-0.18}\,M_\odot$, and leads to the best current estimate of the parallax for the system, $\pi = 21.9 \pm 0.2\,$mas. In addition, the minimal relative inclination between the inner and outer orbits is $10.9^\circ \pm 1.5^\circ$, implying that the system does not have a coplanar configuration.

Helioseismology and asteroseismology of red giant stars have shown that the distribution of angular momentum in stellar interiors, and its evolution with time remains an open issue in stellar physics. Owing to the unprecedented quality of Kepler photometry, we are able to seismically infer internal rotation rates in \gamma Doradus stars, which provide the MS counterpart to the red-giants puzzle. We confront these internal rotation rates to stellar evolution models with rotationally induced transport of angular momentum, in order to test angular momentum transport mechanisms. We used a stellar model-independent method developed by Christophe et al. in order to obtain seismically inferred, buoyancy radii and near-core rotation for 37 \gamma Doradus stars observed by Kepler. We show that the buoyancy radius can be used as a reliable evolution indicator for field stars on the MS. We computed rotating evolutionary models including transport of angular momentum in radiative zones, following Zahn and Maeder, with the CESTAM code. This code calculates the rotational history of stars from the birth line to the tip of the RGB. The initial angular momentum content has to be set initially, which is done by fitting rotation periods in young stellar clusters. We show a clear disagreement between the near-core rotation rates measured in the sample and the rotation rates obtained from evolutionary models including rotationally induced transport following Zahn (1992). These results show a disagreement similar to that of the Sun and red giant stars. This suggests the existence of missing mechanisms responsible for the braking of the core before and along the MS. The efficiency of the missing mechanisms is investigated. Powerful laser-plasma processes are explored to generate discharge currents of a few $100\,$kA in coil targets, yielding magnetostatic fields (B-fields) in excess of $0.5\,$kT. The quasi-static currents are provided from hot electron ejection from the laser-irradiated surface. According to our model, describing qualitatively the evolution of the discharge current, the major control parameter is the laser irradiance $I_{\mathrm{las}}\lambda_{\mathrm{las}}^2$. The space-time evolution of the B-fields is experimentally characterized by high-frequency bandwidth B-dot probes and by proton-deflectometry measurements. The magnetic pulses, of ns-scale, are long enough to magnetize secondary targets through resistive diffusion. We applied it in experiments of laser-generated relativistic electron transport into solid dielectric targets, yielding an unprecedented 5-fold enhancement of the energy-density flux at $60 \,\mathrm{\mu m}$ depth, compared to unmagnetized transport conditions. These studies pave the ground for magnetized high-energy density physics investigations, related to laser-generated secondary sources of radiation and/or high-energy particles and their transport, to high-gain fusion energy schemes and to laboratory astrophysics., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, invited APS

The seismic data provided by the satellites CoRoT and Kepler enabled us to probe the internal rotation of thousands of evolved low-mass stars. Subsequently, several studies showed that current stellar evolution codes are unable to reproduce the low core rotation rates observed in these stars. These results indicate that an additional angular momentum transport process is necessary to counteract the spin up due to the core contraction during the post-main sequence evolution. For several candidates, the transport induced by internal gravity waves (IGW) could play a non-negligible role. In this work, we investigate the effect of IGW generated by penetrative convection on the internal rotation of low-mass stars from the subgiant branch to the beginning of the red giant branch. We show that IGW can efficiently counteract the contraction-driven spin up of the core of subgiant stars if the amplitude of the radial-differential rotation (between the center of the star and the top of the radiative zone) is higher than a threshold value. This threshold depends on the evolutionary stage and is comparable to the differential rotation rates inferred for a sample of subgiant stars observed by the satellite Kepler. Such an agreement can therefore be interpreted as the consequence of a regulation mechanism driven by IGW. This result is obtained under the assumption of a smooth rotation profile and holds true even if a wide range of values is considered for the parameters of the generation model. In contrast, on the red giant branch, we find that IGW remain insufficient, on their own, to explain the observations. We conclude that plume-induced IGW are able to efficiently extract angular momentum from the core of subgiant stars and accordingly have to be taken into account. Binary star systems are important for understanding stellar structure and evolution, and are especially useful when oscillations can be detected and analysed with asteroseismology. However, only four systems are known in which solar-like oscillations are detected in both components. Here, we analyse the fifth such system, HD 176465, which was observed by Kepler. We carefully analysed the system's power spectrum to measure individual mode frequencies, adapting our methods where necessary to accommodate the fact that both stars oscillate in a similar frequency range. We also modelled the two stars independently by fitting stellar models to the frequencies and complementary parameters. We are able to cleanly separate the oscillation modes in both systems. The stellar models produce compatible ages and initial compositions for the stars, as is expected from their common and contemporaneous origin. Combining the individual ages, the system is about 3.0$\pm$0.5 Gyr old. High-energy-density flows through dense matter are needed for effective progress in the production of laser-driven intense sources of energetic particles and radiation, in driving matter to extreme temperatures creating state regimes relevant for planetary or stellar science as yet inaccessible at the laboratory scale, or in achieving high-gain laser-driven thermonuclear fusion. When interacting at the surface of dense (opaque) targets, intense lasers accelerate relativistic electron beams which transport a significant fraction of the laser energy into the target depth. However, the overall laser-to-target coupling efficiency is impaired by the large divergence of the electron beam, intrinsic to the laser-plasma interaction. By imposing a longitudinal 600T laser-driven magnetic-field, our experimental results show guided >10MA-current of MeV-electrons in solid matter. Due to the applied magnetic field, the transported energy-density and the peak background electron temperature at the 60micron-thick targets rear surface rise by factors 5, resulting from unprecedentedly efficient guiding of relativistic electron currents., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The detection of mixed modes in subgiants and red giants by the CoRoT and \emph{Kepler} space-borne missions allows us to investigate the internal structure of evolved low-mass stars. In particular, the measurement of the mean core rotation rate as a function of the evolution places stringent constraints on the physical mechanisms responsible for the angular momentum redistribution in stars. It showed that the current stellar evolution codes including the modelling of rotation fail to reproduce the observations. An additional physical process that efficiently extracts angular momentum from the core is thus necessary. Our aim is to assess the ability of mixed modes to do this. To this end, we developed a formalism that provides a modelling of the wave fluxes in both the mean angular momentum and the mean energy equations in a companion paper. In this article, mode amplitudes are modelled based on recent asteroseismic observations, and a quantitative estimate of the angular momentum transfer is obtained. This is performed for a benchmark model of 1.3 $M_{\odot}$ at three evolutionary stages, representative of the evolved pulsating stars observed by CoRoT and Kepler. We show that mixed modes extract angular momentum from the innermost regions of subgiants and red giants. However, this transport of angular momentum from the core is unlikely to counterbalance the effect of the core contraction in subgiants and early red giants. In contrast, for more evolved red giants, mixed modes are found efficient enough to balance and exceed the effect of the core contraction, in particular in the hydrogen-burning shell. Our results thus indicate that mixed modes are a promising candidate to explain the observed spin-down of the core of evolved red giants, but that an other mechanism is to be invoked for subgiants and early red giants., Comment: Accepted in A&A, 7 pages, 8 figures

Seismic observations by the space-borne mission \emph{Kepler} have shown that the core of red giant stars slows down while evolving, requiring an efficient physical mechanism to extract angular momentum from the inner layers. Current stellar evolution codes fail to reproduce the observed rotation rates by several orders of magnitude, and predict a drastic spin-up of red giant cores instead. New efficient mechanisms of angular momentum transport are thus required. In this framework, our aim is to investigate the possibility that mixed modes extract angular momentum from the inner radiative regions of evolved low-mass stars. To this end, we consider the Transformed Eulerian Mean (TEM) formalism, introduced by Andrews \& McIntyre (1978), that allows us to consider the combined effect of both the wave momentum flux in the mean angular momentum equation and the wave heat flux in the mean entropy equation as well as their interplay with the meridional circulation. In radiative layers of evolved low-mass stars, the quasi-adiabatic approximation, the limit of slow rotation, and the asymptotic regime can be applied for mixed modes and enable us to establish a prescription for the wave fluxes in the mean equations. The formalism is finally applied to a $1.3 M_\odot$ benchmark model, representative of observed CoRoT and \emph{Kepler} oscillating evolved stars. We show that the influence of the wave heat flux on the mean angular momentum is not negligible and that the overall effect of mixed modes is to extract angular momentum from the innermost region of the star. The simulation of the neutron background for Phase II of the SIMPLE direct dark matter search experiment is fully reported with various improvements relative to previous estimates. The model employs the Monte Carlo MCNP neutron transport code, using as input a realistic geometry description, measured radioassays and material compositions, and tabulated (\alpha,n) yields and spectra. Developments include the accounting of recoil energy distributions, consideration of additional reactions and materials and examination of the relevant (\alpha,n) data. A thorough analysis of the simulation results is performed that addresses an increased number of non-statistical uncertainties. The referred omissions are seen to provide a net increase of 13$\%$ in the previously-reported background estimates whereas the non-statistical uncertainty rises to 25$\%$. The final estimated recoil event rate is 0.372 $\pm$ 0.002 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.097 (non-stat.) evt/kgd resulting in insignificant changes over the results of the experiment., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics 2-Dec-2015

Quasi-static magnetic-fields up to $800\,$T are generated in the interaction of intense laser pulses ($500\,$J, $1\,$ns, $10^{17}\,$W/cm$^2$) with capacitor-coil targets of different materials. The reproducible magnetic-field peak and rise-time, consistent with the laser pulse duration, were accurately inferred from measurements with GHz-bandwidth inductor pickup coils (B-dot probes). Results from Faraday rotation of polarized optical laser light and deflectometry of energetic proton beams are consistent with the B-dot probe measurements at the early stages of the target charging, up to $t\approx 0.35\,$ns, and then are disturbed by radiation and plasma effects. The field has a dipole-like distribution over a characteristic volume of $1\,$mm$^3$, which is coherent with theoretical expectations. These results demonstrate a very efficient conversion of the laser energy into magnetic fields, thus establishing a robust laser-driven platform for reproducible, well characterized, generation of quasi-static magnetic fields at the kT-level, as well as for magnetization and accurate probing of high-energy-density samples driven by secondary powerful laser or particle beams., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Phase II of SIMPLE (Superheated Instrument for Massive ParticLe Experiments) searched for astroparticle dark matter using superheated liquid C$_{2}$ClF$_{5}$ droplet detectors. Each droplet generally requires an energy deposition with linear energy transfer (LET) $\gtrsim$ 150 keV/$\mu$m for a liquid-to-gas phase transition, providing an intrinsic rejection against minimum ionizing particles of order 10$^{-10}$, and reducing the backgrounds to primarily $\alpha$ and neutron-induced recoil events. The droplet phase transition generates a millimetric-sized gas bubble which is recorded by acoustic means. We describe the SIMPLE detectors, their acoustic instrumentation, and the characterizations, signal analysis and data selection which yield a particle-induced, "true nucleation" event detection efficiency of better than 97% at a 95% C.L. The recoil-$\alpha$ event discrimination, determined using detectors first irradiated with neutrons and then doped with alpha emitters, provides a recoil identification of better than 99%; it differs from those of COUPP and PICASSO primarily as a result of their different liquids with lower critical LETs. The science measurements, comprising two shielded arrays of fifteen detectors each and a total exposure of 27.77 kgd, are detailed. Removal of the 1.94 kgd Stage 1 installation period data, which had previously been mistakenly included in the data, reduces the science exposure from 20.18 to 18.24 kgd and provides new contour minima of $\sigma_{p}$ = 4.3 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ pb at 35 GeV/c$^{2}$ in the spin-dependent sector of WIMP-proton interactions and $\sigma_{N}$ = 3.6 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ pb at 35 GeV/c$^{2}$ in the spin-independent sector. We use asteroseismic data obtained by the NASA Kepler Mission to estimate the fundamental properties of more than 500 main-sequence and sub-giant stars. Data obtained during the first 10 months of Kepler science operations were used for this work, when these solar-type targets were observed for one month each in a survey mode. Stellar properties have been estimated using two global asteroseismic parameters and complementary photometric and spectroscopic data. Homogeneous sets of effective temperatures were available for the entire ensemble from complementary photometry; spectroscopic estimates of T_eff and [Fe/H] were available from a homogeneous analysis of ground-based data on a subset of 87 stars. PLATO 2.0 has recently been selected for ESA's M3 launch opportunity (2022/24). Providing accurate key planet parameters (radius, mass, density and age) in statistical numbers, it addresses fundamental questions such as: How do planetary systems form and evolve? Are there other systems with planets like ours, including potentially habitable planets? The PLATO 2.0 instrument consists of 34 small aperture telescopes (32 with 25 sec readout cadence and 2 with 2.5 sec candence) providing a wide field-of-view (2232 deg2) and a large photometric magnitude range (4-16 mag). It focusses on bright (4-11 mag) stars in wide fields to detect and characterize planets down to Earth-size by photometric transits, whose masses can then be determined by ground-based radial-velocity follow-up measurements. Asteroseismology will be performed for these bright stars to obtain highly accurate stellar parameters, including masses and ages. The combination of bright targets and asteroseismology results in high accuracy for the bulk planet parameters: 2%, 4-10% and 10% for planet radii, masses and ages, respectively. The planned baseline observing strategy includes two long pointings (2-3 years) to detect and bulk characterize planets reaching into the habitable zone (HZ) of solar-like stars and an additional step-and-stare phase to cover in total about 50% of the sky. PLATO 2.0 will observe up to 1,000,000 stars and detect and characterize hundreds of small planets, and thousands of planets in the Neptune to gas giant regime out to the HZ. It will therefore provide the first large-scale catalogue of bulk characterized planets with accurate radii, masses, mean densities and ages. This catalogue will include terrestrial planets at intermediate orbital distances, where surface temperatures are moderate. The combined measurement of dark matter interactions with different superheated liquids has recently been suggested as a cross-correlation technique in identifying WIMP candidates. We describe the fabrication of high concentration superheated droplet detectors based on the light nuclei liquids C3F8, C4F8, C4F10 and CCl2F2, and investigation of their irradiation response with respect to C2ClF5. The results are discussed in terms of the basic physics of superheated liquid response to particle interactions, as well as the necessary detector qualifications for application in dark matter search investigations. The space missions CoRoT and Kepler provide high quality data that allow us to test the transport of angular momentum in stars by the seismic determination of the internal rotation profile. Our aim is to test the validity of the seismic diagnostics for red giants rotation that are based on a perturbative method and to investigate the oscillation spectra when the validity does not hold. We use a non-perturbative approach implemented in the ACOR code (Ouazzani et al. 2012) that accounts for the effect of rotation on pulsations, and solves the pulsation eigenproblem directly for dipolar oscillation modes. We find that the limit of the perturbation to first order can be expressed in terms of the rotational splitting compared to the frequency separation between consecutive dipolar modes. Above this limit, non-perturbative computations are necessary but only one term in the spectral expansion of modes is sufficient as long as the core rotation rate remains significantly smaller than the pulsation frequencies. Each family of modes with different azimuthal symmetry, m, has to be considered separately. In particular, in case of rapid core rotation, the density of the spectrum differs significantly from one m-family of modes to another, so that the differences between the period spacings associated with each m-family can constitute a promising guideline toward a proper seismic diagnostic for rotation., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A
