3. Real‐Time Detection of Coherent Vibrational Dynamics in TiN Films.

Abstract

Titanium nitride (TiN) has recently gained considerable interest because of its remarkable plasmonic properties and for its strong electron–phonon (e–ph) coupling, leading to extremely fast (<100 fs) electron‐lattice cooling. Here, the generation of coherent phonons in TiN films is reported, along with their real‐time detection by means of broadband transient reflection spectroscopy with sub‐15‐fs temporal resolution. The measurements show damped oscillations, superimposed to excited state electronic decay. A coherent vibrational mode is revealed, with ≈10 THz frequency ascribed to defect‐activated normal modes, consistent with spontaneous Raman scattering data, and a dephasing time of ≈250 fs. Two π‐phase flips are also observed located at photon energies corresponding to interband optical transitions (at 3.2 and 2.5 eV), ascribed to selective coupling of the vibrational mode to these transitions; the energy modulation induced by the vibrational coherence is evaluated. It is shown that the displacive excitation of coherent phonons model describes the coherent response in terms of temporal behavior and of spectral amplitude profile. Overall, a comprehensive and detailed analysis of coherent phonons in TiN films, so far undected, is provided and relevant information on TiN photo‐physical properties, potentially useful for its applications, is given. Abstract

While alkaline Zn batteries, like traditional rechargeable aqueous batteries, boast an advantage in terms of energy density, their progress has been hampered by concerns related to the anode. These concerns include issues like Zn dendrites, self‐corrosion, passivation, shape change, and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To tackle these challenges, we have introduced a nanostructuring approach for the anode, employing carbon‐coated ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO@C) as the active material. In this study, we synthesized ZnO@C nanoparticles in an environmentally sustainable and scalable manner to address passivation and dissolution issues jointly. Nanoscale ZnO particles effectively prevent passivation, while carbon shell slows down the dissolution of zincate. The Zn anode exhibits a significant performance boost when compared to Zn foil and bare ZnO nanoparticles, even when subjected to demanding conditions (without the use of ZnO‐saturated electrolyte). This rechargeable Zn anode marks a significant step toward the realization of practical, high‐energy rechargeable aqueous batteries, such as Zn‐air batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The research on molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) has progressed remarkably in the last decade, prompted by the increasing interest for this material as a potential candidate in future ultrathin optoelectronic devices. MoS 2 is a layered semiconductor with a gap in the visible region, which can be exfoliated down to the mono-layer form. Since the discovery of the exceptional optoelectronic properties of 2D MoS 2 , Raman spectroscopy has been extensively used as a tool to characterize the structure and thickness of MoS 2 films. Recent works on MoS 2 -metal interfaces have shown that Raman spectra are significantly affected by the interaction with metals. However, a complete understanding of how such interaction modifies the MoS 2 vibrational properties is still lacking. Studying this subject with both experimental and theoretical methods will provide fundamental insight into the interface physics of MoS 2 -metal systems, which is crucial for the fabrication of metal contacts and for the development of metal-assisted synthesis methods. This review summarizes the main results concerning Raman spectroscopy studies of heterosystems between MoS 2 and transition metals, providing both a basis and directions for future research. Abstract

Binary ZrCu nanocomposite amorphous films are synthetized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) under vacuum (2 x 10-3 Pa) and 10 Pa He pressure, leading to fully amorphous compact and nanogranular morphologies, respectively. Then, post-thermal annealing treatments are carried out to explore thermal stability and crystallization phenomena together with the evolution of mechanical properties. Compact films exhibit larger thermal stability with partial crystallization phenomena starting at 420 °C, still to be completed at 550 °C, while nanogranular films exhibit early-stage crystallization at 300 °C and completed at 485 °C. The microstructural differences are related to a distinct evolution of mechanical properties and residual stress, with compact TFMGs showing the highest values of Young’s modulus (157 GPa), hardness (12 GPa), strain rate sensitivity (0.096), and local residual stress (+691 MPa) upon annealing at 550 °C, while nanogranular films reach the maximum values of mechanical properties at 485 °C followed by relaxation at higher temperatures due to complete crystallization. We show that PLD in combination with post-thermal annealing can generate different families of amorphous films with varying nanoscale morphologies, resulting in tunable mechanical properties and thermal stability, which can thus be used for designing novel film configurations for different fields of application.

21. Growth of indium phosphide in porous alumina templates and application in photodetection devices

Abstract

Due to its superior optoelectronic properties, indium phosphide (InP) has been successfully integrated in optoelectronic components, high-speed electronics and photovoltaics. With the modern surge of nanotechnology, the research on the synthesis of InP nanowires (NWs) has gained a lot of attention due to their physical properties. Different studies already reported the fabrication of InP NWs arrays via vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). In this work, we report the experimental process towards the fabrication of a novel InP NWs array embedded in a porous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The use of AAO as templates for the NWs growth can avoid the use of lithographic processes, can address the unproductive charge recombination in the surface region of free-standing NWs, can allow the fabrication of compact and flexible devices and can potentially lead to the reduction of pixel sizes to sub-micrometric dimensions. The synthesis of InP in AAO has been explored via different growth techniques: plasma enhanced phosphorization (PEPh) and thermal phosphorization (TPh) of patterned electrodeposited indium, and VLS using templated electrodeposited gold as catalyst. Part of the research was dedicated to fabricating the templates for the growth process via anodizing and metal electrodeposition in the AAO structure. The study then reports the different growth conditions that were explored and the characterization of the samples. Monocrystalline InP NWs arrays were not ultimately produced, but data suggest the synthesis of InP. Electrochemical photodetector devices were fabricated to test the photo response of the obtained material.

Abstract

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is a promising material for heterogeneous catalysis and novel 2D optoelectronic devices. In this work, single-layer MoS2 is synthesized on Au(111) by pulsed laser deposition, showing the potentialities of this technique in the synthesis of high-quality 2D materials films., Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is a promising material for heterogeneous catalysis and novel two-dimensional (2D) optoelectronic devices. In this work, we synthesized single-layer (SL) MoS2 structures on Au(111) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. By controlling the PLD process, we were able to tune the sample morphology from low-coverage SL nanocrystals to large-area SL films uniformly wetting the whole substrate surface. We investigated the obtained MoS2 structures at the nanometer and atomic scales by means of in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements, to study the interaction between SL MoS2 and Au(111)—which for example influences MoS2 lattice orientation—the structure of point defects and the formation of in-plane MoS2/Au heterojunctions. Raman spectroscopy, performed ex situ on large-area SL MoS2, revealed significant modifications of the in-plane E12g and out-of-plane A1g vibrational modes, possibly related to strain and doping effects. Charge transfer between SL MoS2 and Au is also likely responsible for the total suppression of excitonic emission, observed by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.

Abstract

The development of novel protocols and techniques for waste treatment represents the state of the art in the “green conversion”. Chemical wastes deriving from industrial and power‐station processes, which involve organic crystals, can be hazardous for the environment. Studying their dissolution mechanism, both theoretically and experimentally, represents a mandatory step in the critical task of their disposal. Surprisingly, most of the studies are focused on millimeter scale length, from which one could estimate/learn/acknowledge the crystal dissolution rate. In these studies, where no information about the dissolution mechanism on a molecular scale is provided, etch‐pit formation is recognized as the ultimate mechanism of crystal dissolution.In this work, we show the morphological evolution of organic nanocrystals in a reactive dissolution process controlled by pH. This approach allows us to explore ranges of high undersaturation, whereby crystal dissolution occurs even though etch‐pit formation is suppressed. Adopting different surface and bulk‐sensitive techniques (atomic force microscopy, time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X‐ray/electron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, respectively), we investigate the dissolution process of porphyrin thin films deposited on the basal plane of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, proving that such films constitute a model system to unveil the dissolution mechanism of organic nanocrystals.

50. Hydrophilic Character of Single-Layer MoS2Grown on Ag(111)

Abstract

The study of MoS2/metal interfaces is crucial for engineering efficient semiconductor–metal contacts in 2D MoS2-based devices. Here we investigate a MoS2/Ag heterostructure fabricated by growing a single MoS2layer on Ag(111) by pulsed laser deposition under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. The surface structure is observed in situ by scanning tunneling microscopy, revealing the hexagonal moiré pattern characteristic of the clean MoS2/Ag(111) interface. Ex situ Raman spectroscopy reveals an anomalous behavior of vibrational modes, induced by the strong MoS2–Ag interaction. After few-hours exposure to ambient conditions the Raman response significantly changes and the formation of molybdenum oxysulfides is revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These effects are due to the interplay with water vapor and can be reversed by a moderate UHV annealing. A polymeric (PMMA) capping is demonstrated to hinder water-induced modifications, preserving the original interface quality for months.
