Abstract

Certain excitations, especially ones of long-range charge transfer character, are poorly described by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) when typical (semi-)local functionals are used. A proper description of these excitations would require an exchange-correlation response differing substantially from the usual (semi-)local one. It has recently been shown that functionals of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) type can yield unusual potentials, mimicking features of the exact exchange derivative discontinuity and showing divergences on orbital nodal surfaces. We here investigate whether these unusual potential properties translate into beneficial response properties. Using the Sternheimer formalism we closely investigate the response obtained with the 2013 exchange approximation by Armiento and K\"ummel (AK13) and the 1988 exchange approximation by Becke (B88), both of which show divergences on orbital nodal planes. Numerical calculations for Na2 as well as analytical and numerical calculations for the hydrogen atom show that the response of AK13 behaves qualitatively different from usual semi local functionals. However, the AK13 functional leads to fundamental instabilities in the asymptotic region that prevent its practical application in TDDFT. Our findings may help the development of future improved functionals, and corroborate that the frequency-dependent Sternheimer formalism is excellently suited for running and analyzing TDDFT calculations.

Abstract

The interaction of a single manganese impurity with silicon is analyzed in a combined experimental and theoretical study of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of manganese-doped silicon clusters. The structural transition from exohedral to endohedral doping coincides with a quenching of high-spin states. For all geometric structures investigated, we find a similar dependence of the magnetic moment on the manganese coordination number and nearest neighbor distance. This observation can be generalized to manganese point defects in bulk silicon, whose magnetic moments fall within the observed magnetic-to-nonmagnetic transition, and which therefore react very sensitively to changes in the local geometry. The results indicate that high spin states in manganese-doped silicon could be stabilized by an appropriate lattice expansion.

Abstract

The accurate prediction of electronic response properties of extended molecular systems has been a challenge for conventional, explicit density functionals. We demonstrate that a self-interaction correction implemented rigorously within Kohn-Sham theory via the Optimized Effective Potential (OEP) yields polarizabilities close to the ones from highly accurate wavefunction-based calculations and exceeding the quality of exact-exchange-OEP. Abstract

The question whether the linear absorption spectra of metal clusters can be interpreted as density oscillations (collective ``plasmons'') or can only be understood as transitions between distinct molecular states is still a matter of debate for clusters with only a few electrons. We calculate the photoabsorption spectra of Na2 and Na5+ comparing two different methods: quantum fluid-dynamics and time-dependent density functional theory. The changes in the electronic structure associated with particular excitations are visualized in ``snapshots'' via transition densities. Our analysis shows that even for the smallest clusters, the observed excitations can be interpreted as intuitively understandable density oscillations. For Na5+, the importance of self-interaction corrections to the adiabatic local density approximation is demonstrated., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

A partial differential eigenvalue equation for the density displacement fields associated with electronic excitations is derived in the framework of density functional theory. Our quantum fluid-dynamical approach is based on a variational principle and the Kohn-Sham ground-state energy functional, using only the occupied Kohn-Sham orbitals. It allows for an intuitive interpretation of electronic excitations in terms of intrinsic local currents that obey a continuity equation. We demonstrate the capabilities of this non-empirical approach by calculating the photoabsorption spectra of small sodium clusters. The quantitative agreement between theoretical and experimental spectra shows that even for the smallest clusters, the resonances observed experimentally at low temperatures can be interpreted in terms of density vibrations., Comment: RevTeX file with 2 figures. Abstract

We determined the ionic and electronic structure of sodium clusters with even electron numbers and 2 to 59 atoms in axially averaged and three-dimensional density functional calculations. A local, phenomenological pseudopotential that reproduces important bulk and atomic properties and facilitates structure calculations has been developed. Photoabsorption spectra have been calculated for $\mathrm{Na}_2$, $\mathrm{Na}_8$, and $\mathrm{Na}_9^+$ to $\mathrm{Na}_{59}^+$. The consistent inclusion of ionic structure considerably improves agreement with experiment. An icosahedral growth pattern is observed for $\mathrm{Na}_{19}^+$ to $\mathrm{Na}_{59}^+$. Abstract

The thermal expansion coefficients of $\mathrm{Na}_{N}$ clusters with $8 \le N \le 40$ and $\mathrm{Al}_{7}$, $\mathrm{Al}_{13}^-$ and $\mathrm{Al}_{14}^-$ are obtained from {\it ab initio} Born-Oppenheimer LDA molecular dynamics. Thermal expansion of small metal clusters is considerably larger than that in the bulk and size-dependent. We demonstrate that the average static electric dipole polarizability of Na clusters depends linearly on the mean interatomic distance and only to a minor extent on the detailed ionic configuration when the overall shape of the electron density is enforced by electronic shell effects. The polarizability is thus a sensitive indicator for thermal expansion. We show that taking this effect into account brings theoretical and experimental polarizabilities into quantitative agreement., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, one table. Abstract

The static electric dipole polarizability of $\mathrm{Na_N}$ clusters with even N has been calculated in a collective, axially averaged and a three-dimensional, finite-field approach for $2\le N \le 20$, including the ionic structure of the clusters. The validity of a collective model for the static response of small systems is demonstrated. Our density functional calculations verify the trends and fine structure seen in a recent experiment. A pseudopotential that reproduces the experimental bulk bond length and atomic energy levels leads to a substantial increase in the calculated polarizabilities, in better agreement with experiment. We calculated required sample sizes to power for OS using published data from recent mBC trials.Patients and methods: Randomized superiority trials of first-line chemotherapy/targeted therapy for HER2-negative mBC including >150 patients, meeting the primary efficacy objective, and published in 2000–2018 were identified. The sample sizes required to power for PFS and OS were calculated retrospectively for each trial using observed results and study/recruitment follow-up durations (α=0.05, two-sided log-rank test, 80% power), and summarized as a factor (x) relative to actual sample size.Results: Nine of 13 identified trials reported all information required for retrospective sample size calculation. Six had sample sizes larger than required to demonstrate a significant PFS benefit but all would have required larger sample sizes to demonstrate significant OS benefit with the observed results. In ten trials, the required sample size was ≥5-fold larger to power for OS than PFS.Conclusion: Designing trials to test potential new treatments for HER2-negative mBC is challenging, requiring a balance of regulatory acceptability, feasibility, and realistic medical assumptions to calculate sample sizes. Powering for OS is particularly difficult in heterogeneous populations with long postprogression survival, potential crossover, heterogeneous poststudy therapy, and evolving treatment standards. Validated surrogate endpoints are critical. Ongoing trials of cancer immunotherapy (new mode of action) in triple-negative mBC (more homogeneous, shorter OS and postprogression survival, fewer treatment options) may show a new pattern. Abstract

We present ground-state configurations and photoabsorption spectra of Na-7+, Na-27+ and Na-41+. Both the ionic structure and the photoabsorption spectra of medium-size sodium clusters beyond Na-20 have been calculated self-consistently with a nonspherical treatment of the valence electrons in density functional theory. We use a local pseudopotential that has been adjusted to experimental bulk properties and the atomic 3s level of sodium. Our studies have shown that both the ionic structure of the ground state and the positions of the plasmon resonances depend sensitively on the pseudopotential used in the calculation, which stresses the importance of its consistent use in both steps., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Combining conventional and complementary medicine into integrative medicine can be regarded as a kind of merger. In a merger, two or more organizations - usually companies - are combined into one in order to strengthen the companies financially and strategically. The corporate culture of both merger partners has an important influence on the integration.Purpose: The aim of this project was to transfer the concept of corporate culture in mergers to the merging of two medical systems.Methods: A two-step approach (literature analyses and expert consensus procedure) was used to develop practical guidance for the development of a cultural basis for integrative medicine, based on the framework of corporate culture in “mergers,” which could be used to build an integrative medicine department or integrative medicine service.Results: Results include recommendations for general strategic dimensions (definition of the medical model, motivation for integration, clarification of the available resources, development of the integration team, and development of a communication strategy), and recommendations to overcome cultural differences (the clinic environment, the professional language, the professional image, and the implementation of evidence-based medicine).Conclusion: The framework of mergers in corporate culture provides an understanding of the difficulties involved in integrative medicine projects. Nonspecific inhibition of the proliferative activity of keratinocytes has antidifferentiation effects that lead to defects in the barrier function and, thus, to dry, itchy, and irritable skin. These cutaneous symptoms reduce the quality of life of the patients considerably. Conditioning with topical application of niacinamide uses the cytoprotective and barrier stabilizing effect of vitamin B3. Patients and methods: A multicenter randomized crossover study investigated the influence of the test preparation on the quality of life compared to standard care for 73 patients with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant or neoadjuvant cytostatic therapy. Primary target parameter was the Dermatology Life Quality Index with its respective subscales after 6 weeks of a twice-daily application of the respective preparations. Additionally, specific symptoms such as pruritus, dryness, and irritability have been assessed using visual analog scales. Results: Regarding the total score of the Dermatology Life Quality Index, no relevant differences could be observed. However, the results for the "symptoms and feelings" subscale show a significant advantage in favor of the test preparation.
