When interpreting marine very high-resolution (VHR) single-channel seismic reflection data, the signal in the water column is generally considered as noise and is often eliminated by a water-mute application to focus on geological information under the seafloor. Alternatively, the signal in the water column can be used to study ocean currents or gas/fluid emissions. To provide images of the sedimentary formations and tectonic structures beneath the seafloor in shallow water regions, such as continental shelves and lakes, marine seismic reflection profiles are often acquired using a single-channel streamer and sparker-type source, providing VHR data, with limited penetration depth. To exploit the full potential of these single-channel data, we propose a simple algorithm, called REWARE (Recovery of Water-column Acoustic Reflectors). This algorithm allows to extract further geological information from the water-column data using open-source codes (Seismic Un*x), adding the coherent signal from the previous shots, recorded in the water column, to the previous traces. The record length becomes longer while maintaining a very high trace-to-trace consistency. To demonstrate its efficiency, we present two examples of the REWARE processing in two different geological contexts: the East Sardinia shelf (Italy) and the North Evia Gulf (Greece). This method provides deeper images than with original data for seismic data acquired across steep slopes, such as canyons or continental shelf breaks. Thus, depending on the seafloor geometry and subseafloor structures, it is possible to image or map sediment layers and tectonic structures at depth, keeping a very high structural resolution. The term Kirchhoff migration refers to a collection of approximate linearized inversion formulas for solving the inverse problem of seismic tomography which entails reconstructing the Earth's subsurface from reflected wave fields. A number of such formulas exists, the first dating from the 1950 s. As far as we know, these formulas have not yet been mathematically compared with respect to their imaging properties. This shortcoming is to be alleviated by the present work: we systematically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the formulas in 2D from a microlocal point of view. To this end we consider the corresponding imaging operators in an unified framework as pseudodifferential or Fourier integral operators. Tectonic tremors occur around the subducting seamount of the Kyushu Palau Ridge (KPR) in Hyuga-nada, Japan. We investigate the relationship between tremor activity and structural and physical characteristics using high-resolution reflection seismic imaging of the KR0114-8 line, encompassing areas with both high and low occurrences of tremors. The reflection data are reprocessed using broadband processing, reflection tomography and Kirchhoff pre-stack depth migration. The resulting image delineates complex deformation and lithological boundaries, such as the accretionary prism, underthrust sediments, décollement, and top of the seamount. The observed splay faults and seafloor uplift to the west of the KPR, coupled with frequent tremors, confirm the compressional stress regime on the leading side of the subducting seamount. A stress shadow over the seamount effectively suppresses tremors. Numerous faults indicate significant deformation of the overburden when positioned on the leading side of the seamount. The trailing side exhibits a compressional stress regime, rather than an extensional one, as evidenced by the development of in-sequence thrusts and frequent tremors. Local physical, mechanical, and structural factors critically influence the tremor activity. The increased frequency of tremors is correlated with the thickness of the underthrust sediments and presence of in-sequence thrusts, whereas it is inversely correlated with the reflectivity of the décollement. Several potential mechanisms for this phenomenon include elevated pore pressure above the décollement and/or within the underthrust sediments, as well as structural effects. Reappraisal of legacy reflection seismic data has shown to deliver value in mineral exploration, particularly in brownfield settings. In this work, we demonstrate how the reappraisal and processing of legacy reflection seismic data can be advantageous in the mineral exploration industry. We use today's standard seismic processing tools to improve the imaging of deep and complex geological structures that host mineral deposits. The recovered and processed 25.3 km long legacy seismic profile in this study was acquired in 1983 by the Gold Division of Anglo‐American as part of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields exploration program. This study aims to improve the imaging of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef gold‐bearing horizon (termed reef), a world‐class gold deposit (2 m thick) situated at depths between ∼2400 and ∼4100 m below the ground surface near South Deep Gold Mine in Fochville, South Africa. The final processing results from the pre‐stack time and phase‐shift migration approaches clearly reveal a dipping reflection associated with the gold‐bearing horizon and major steeply dipping faults that crosscut and displace the deposit. The final results are integrated with borehole information, 1D synthetic modelling and aeromagnetic data to constrain the structural interpretation. In particular, 1D synthetic simulation and borehole data constrain the depth position of the gold deposit. The magnetic data provides additional constraints on the complex faulted blocks of the host rocks such as the intrusions that may have a direct impact on ore resources and evaluation. The mining companies, such as South Deep Gold Mine, operating closer to the seismic profiles can use this new structural information to update the current geological models and improve future mine planning and designs, thus providing some insight into the prospectivity of unmined ground. ABSTRACT The present work proposes a new version of the Green‐FOSM (first‐order second moment) method, which eliminates the iterative calculation process of the original version and, simultaneously, solves the convergence problems related to the mechanical properties of rocks that form the geological formation. In this calculation scheme, the iterative process is eliminated by using a matrix that correlates the nodal displacement vector with the strain vector. Considering the same computational resources, this non‐iterative version of the Green‐FOSM method is up to 200 times faster than the original iterative process. In addition, it allows analyzing problems with more than 10,000 random variables, value that in the original method is less than 3000. To demonstrate its validity, the proposed method is applied to two hypothetical models subjected to different fluid extraction processes. For all the different levels of correlation and spatial variability, the statistical results obtained by the proposed method agree well with the results obtained via Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). The relationship between CPU times demonstrates that the proposed method is at least 50 times faster than MCS. In the end, the non‐iterative Green‐FOSM method is used to obtain the displacement, strain, and stress fields of a geological section constructed from a seismic image of Brazilian pre‐salt oil region. The results found show that, depending on the levels of spatial variability, the analyzed fields can assume values up to 30.6% higher or lower than the values obtained deterministically. The Changbai volcano, a globally recognized hotspot of volcanic activity, has garnered significant attention due to its persistent seismicity and ongoing magma activity. The volcano's discontinuities and magma dynamics have raised concerns about the likelihood of future eruptions, which would likely result in substantial ecological, climatic, and economic impacts. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the Changbai volcanic system is essential for mitigating the risks associated with volcanic activity. In recent years, the P-wave coda autocorrelation method has gained popularity in lithosphere exploration as a reliable technique for detecting reflection coefficients. Additionally, the Common Reflection Point stacking approach has been employed to superimpose reflection signals in a spatial grid, enabling continuous observation of reflection coefficients in the study area. However, the accuracy of this approach is heavily reliant on better spatial data coverage. To better understand the internal dynamics of the Changbai volcano, we applied this approach to a densely packed short-period seismic array with an average station spacing of less than 1 km. Our results were constrained using waveform data of reflection coefficients and Moho dip angles. Our findings revealed a discontinuity in the Moho, which may indicate a conduit for mantle magma entering the crust. Furthermore, we identified two low-velocity anomalies within the crust, likely representing a magma chamber comprising molten and crystallized magma. The crust of the South American platform recorded imprints of dynamic processes related with the opening of the Central and South Atlantic but has not been well measured. Crustal structure can be retrieved from teleseismic receiver functions using H – κ stacking, but nearly parallel stripes of high stacking values existing in stacking images for seismic stations in sedimentary area cause difficulties in identifying solutions. We show that some seemingly spurious stripes that do not point to any layer solution are helpful in the identification of the solution position. With the aid of the auxiliary stripes, we retrieved thicknesses and Vp / Vs of sedimentary and crystalline crust for 65 permanent stations of the Brazilian Seismographic Network and six new portable seismic stations in Brazil and Uruguay. The resulted sedimentary thickness and Vp / Vs exhibit a good correlation with the Phanerozoic sediments in the South American basins. The crust of Paraná–Etendeka Large Igneous Province (LIP) had been expected to be more mafic since it had ever been penetrated by mantle magma in the Cretaceous related to the south Atlantic opening. However, we found very low Vp / Vs (1.67) in the crystalline crust beneath the LIP, implying a more felsic crust and that no significant mafic intruding/underplating has occurred in the region. The more felsic crust may be formed in a special evolution early than the magmatic event, or during the magmatic event by releasing crustal volatiles. The resulted sedimentary thickness and Vp / Vs ratios exhibit a good correlation with the Phanerozoic sediments in the South American basins, which implies that Triassic–Jurassic and Cretaceous magmatism did not cause significant metamorphism in sediments formed before the magmatic events. Observations of the seafloor Rayleigh ellipticity contribute to seismic imaging in the ocean. To extract such observables from the arbitrarily oriented ocean–bottom seismometer (OBS) data, we develop an orthogonal-regression-based approach to measure the waveform amplitude ratios of the unoriented horizontal and vertical components. The amplitude ratios are then used to calculate the Rayleigh ellipticity (and the sensor orientation angle). The robustness of our method is verified by applications to both the unoriented OBS data and the well oriented on-land seismic data. As we propose to calculate the Rayleigh ellipticity directly from the unoriented three-component data, the measurement process avoids the complexity arising from the surface wave non-great-circle effects and uncertainties of the OBS sensor orientation angles. Overall the Rayleigh ellipticity measurements from our method are systematically higher than those by conventional analysis and show less uncertainties. Our analyses suggest that the Rayleigh ellipticity curve (14–60 s), which could be retrieved from the raw broad-band OBS data, is effective to constrain the oceanic lithosphere structure, and the accurate measurement of Rayleigh ellipticity curve is important. The potential of seafloor Rayleigh ellipticity for seismic imaging in the ocean is evidenced by a case study of the Japan Basin, the Sea of Japan. Natural fractures are effective storage spaces and the main seepage channels of tight reservoirs, and the spacing and role of structural fractures of different scales in tight reservoirs are also different. However, the opening or height of underground natural fractures is often difficult to determine directly using seismic data or imaging logging, which restricts the characterization, modeling, and analysis of the formation mechanisms of reservoir fractures. This paper uses the morphology of water absorption profiles and conventional logging data to calculate the ratio of the isotope intensity of a single well to natural gamma values from logging and characterize the types of water absorption profiles. The size (opening and height) of the fractures is closely related to the height of the water absorption profile and the fluctuation in the water absorption intensity. The calculated rock mechanics parameters along a single well, combined with the internal friction angle of the rock and the fracture strike, are used to determine the magnitude and direction of the paleostress of the Y290-Y414 Block in the southeastern Ordos Basin during the Himalayan period. By establishing a single-well geomechanical model to simulate the three-dimensional distribution of paleostress and paleostrain during the formation of fractures, a database model for constructing the scale of fractures is established. Through correlation analysis, a model for predicting the strength and thickness of the water absorption profile is established. Finally, the three-dimensional distribution pattern of the scale of structural fractures is predicted, and the reliability of the prediction results is verified using dynamic development data. The research results have certain reference significance for explaining the mechanism of fracture formation, characterizing the scale of underground fractures, and modeling reservoir fractures. We propose an accurate method for modeling acoustic wave propagation. The spatial derivatives are calculated using Fourier transform to reduce spatial numerical dispersion. The standard staggered grid is adopted to suppress the non-causal ringing artifacts as in the traditional pseudo-spectral method. Moreover, to eliminate time dispersion arising from the discretization of the time derivative, an additional time-dispersion elimination term is introduced. As a result, the present method not only retains the advantages of the conventional pseudo-spectral method such as coarser spatial sampling or higher spatial derivative approximation accuracy, but also achieves higher temporal derivative approximation accuracy due to the adoption of the additional time-dispersion elimination term. Numerical examples demonstrate that the temporal dispersion elimination process can be contaminated by spatial numerical dispersion. Thus, the temporal and spatial numerical dispersions should be handled simultaneously, as proposed in this paper, to achieve accurate acoustic simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-resolution seismic imaging allows for the better interpretation of subsurface geological structures. In this study, we employ least-squares reverse time migration (LSRTM) as a seismic imaging method to delineate the subsurface geological structures from the field dataset for understanding the status of Arctic subsea permafrost structures, which is pertinent to global warming issues. The subsea permafrost structures in the Arctic continental shelf, located just below the seafloor at a shallow water depth, have an abnormally high P-wave velocity. These structural conditions create internal multiples and noise in seismic data, making it challenging to perform seismic imaging and construct a seismic P-wave velocity model using conventional methods. LSRTM offers a promising approach by addressing these challenges through linearized inverse problems, aiming to achieve high-resolution, subsurface imaging by optimizing the misfit between the predicted and the observed seismic data. Synthetic experiments, encompassing various subsea permafrost structures and seismic survey configurations, were conducted to investigate the feasibility of LSRTM for imaging the Arctic subsea permafrost from the acquired seismic field dataset, and the possibility of the seismic imaging of the subsea permafrost was confirmed through these synthetic numerical experiments. Furthermore, we applied the LSRTM method to the seismic data acquired in the Canadian Beaufort Sea (CBS) and generated a seismic image depicting the subsea permafrost structures in the Arctic region. Seismic imaging of complicated underground structures with severe surface undulation (i.e., double complex areas) is challenging owing to the difficulty of collecting the very weak reflected signal. Enhancing the weak signal is difficult even with state-of-the-art multi-domain and multidimensional prestack denoising techniques. This paper presents a time–space dip analysis of offset vector tile (OVT) domain data based on the τ-p transform. The proposed N-th root slant stack method enhances the signal in a three-dimensional τ-p domain by establishing a zero-offset time-dip seismic attribute trace and calculating the coherence values of a given data sub-volume (i.e., inline, crossline, time), which are then used to recalculate the data. After sorting, the new data provide a solid foundation for obtaining the optimal N value of the N-th root slant stack, which is used to enhance a weak signal. The proposed method was applied to denoising low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data from Western China. The optimal N value was determined for improving the SNR in deep strata, and the weak seismic signal was enhanced. The Chepaizi Exploration Area, Junggar Basin (NW China) holds substantial importance for seismic exploration endeavors, yet it poses notable challenges due to the intricate nature of its subsurface and near-surface conditions. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel and comprehensive workflow tailored to evaluate and optimize seismic acquisition geometries while considering the impacts of near-surface viscosity. By integrating geological knowledge, historical seismic data, and subsurface modeling, we conduct simulations employing the visco-acoustic wave equation and reverse-time migration to produce detailed subsurface images. The quality of these images is quantitatively evaluated using a local similarity metric, a pivotal tool for evaluating the accuracy of seismic imaging. The culmination of this workflow results in an automated optimization strategy for acquisition geometries that enhances subsurface exploration. Our proposed methodology underscores the importance of incorporating near-surface viscosity effects in seismic imaging, offering a robust framework for improving the accuracy of subsurface imaging. The Canadian Cordillera marks a transition region from the current plate boundary through the Phanerozoic Cordilleran orogen to the Precambrian cratons. Knowledge of the subsurface structure of western Canada has been greatly advanced by seismological investigations during the past two decades, pioneered by the Lithoprobe project and, more recently, by regional passive seismic arrays. In this study, we construct a new model (WCANM22) of crustal thickness and P‐ to S‐wave velocity ratio, or Vp/Vs, by compiling receiver function data from 473 stations and existing constraints from over 2,600‐km long active source experiments. Our model covers a broad swath (about 1/4) of the land area of North America (105°–140°W, 48°–72°N) and shows an overall flat Moho beneath the Cordillera with an average depth of ∼36 km and a standard deviation of 3 km across orogenic belts. This study provides a comprehensive catalog of Vp/Vs in western Canada and reveals a moderate correlation between Poisson's ratio and the age of crustal domains. The average Vp/Vs values are 1.72, 1.79, and 1.82 for the Phanerozoic Cordillera, Proterozoic Cratons, and Archean‐aged Medicine Hat Block, respectively, suggesting continued modifications to crustal composition through episodic tectonothermal events. This distinct trend in western Canada sheds new light on the debated role of secular changes in the composition of continental crust. We reprocessed a 50‐km long legacy 2D reflection seismic profile acquired in 1986, under a project funded by the National Geophysics Program to improve the delineation of complex geological structures that host the platinum‐bearing horizons (known as the UG2 reef; a chromitite horizon) on the south‐eastern edge of the Western limb of the Bushveld Complex and to investigate the continuity of the reef below the thick cover. The pre‐stack seismic data quality was improved through conventional processing steps. We applied standard Kirchhoff pre‐stack depth migration as well as advanced coherency migration techniques. Both imaging techniques yielded good structural images of the platinum deposits, their hanging wall and footwall rocks. In particular, the coherency migration technique has provided significantly better images in complex faulted regions, yielding a better understanding of the interrelationship between fault activity and platinum deposit distribution, and the relative chronology of tectonic events. The accuracy of fault interpretation is generally influenced by the quality of seismic images. Because of the blurring effect of the migration process, faults with small throws may not be clearly imaged in seismic images, which will impose limitations on the fault detection. To address this issue, we propose a deep learning‐based method to enhance faults in poststack seismic images. We generate abundant training samples by convolving the three‐dimensional point‐spread functions with the noisy reflectivity models. The corresponding labels are synthesized using the one‐dimensional seismic wavelet convolution method, simulating conditions with perfect illumination. To train the network for optimal performance, we investigate the impact of different loss functions. Ultimately, we employ a mixed loss function combining structural similarity index measure and gradient difference loss, since the gradient difference loss focuses more on geological edge information, and the structural similarity index measure possesses excellent image perceptual capability and optimization property. Results from one synthetic seismic image and three real seismic data demonstrate that our proposed method can effectively restore the sharpness of fault surfaces, particularly for faults with small displacements. Compared to the structural smoothing method, the network we trained achieves optimal fault enhancement. Furthermore, coherence‐based fault images indicate that seismic images enhanced using our method can improve the accuracy of fault interpretation and yield more continuous fault maps. Full waveform inversion stands at the forefront of seismic imaging technologies, pivotal in retrieving high‐resolution subsurface velocity models. Its application is especially profound when imaging complex geologies such as salt bodies, which are regions notoriously challenging, yet essential given their hydrocarbon potential. However, with the power of full waveform inversion comes the intrinsic challenge of estimating the associated uncertainties. Such uncertainties are crucial in understanding the reliability of subsurface models, particularly in terrains like subsalt regions. Addressing this, we advocate for a nuanced approach employing the Stein variational gradient descent algorithm. Through a judicious use of a limited number of velocity model particles and the integration of random field‐based perturbations, our methodology provides a local representation of the uncertainties inherent in full waveform inversion. Our evaluations, based on the Marmousi model, showcase the robustness of the proposed technique. Yet, it is our exploration into salt‐intensive terrains, leveraging data from the Sigsbee 2A synthetic model and the Gulf of Mexico, that emphasizes the method's versatility. Findings indicate pronounced uncertainties along salt boundaries and in the deeper subsalt sediments, contrasting the minimal uncertainties in non‐salt terrains. However, anomalies like salt canyons present unique challenges, potentially due to the interplay of multi‐scattering effects. Emphasizing the scalability and cost‐effectiveness of this approach, we highlight its potential for large‐scale industrial applications in full waveform inversion, while also underscoring the necessity for prudence when integrating these uncertainty insights into subsequent seismic‐driven geological and reservoir modelling. The Gulong Sag in the northern Songliao Basin, China, possesses abundant shale oil resources and represents a highly prospective area for shale oil exploration. However, the Qingshankou formation shale oil reservoir within this region exhibits characteristics such as thin longitudinal thickness, pronounced horizontal heterogeneity, limited frequency range, and significant anisotropy that pose difficulties in accurately predicting the "sweet spot" of shale oil within the target interval. The azimuthal anisotropy characteristics of the target layer in the Qingshankou formation are analyzed in this manuscript, utilizing wide-azimuth and small bin seismic data from the Y3 research area. Considering the limitations of existing methods for fitting elliptical velocities in azimuthal anisotropy correction, the influence of azimuthal anisotropy time difference on the non-in-phase superposition of seismic in-phase axis is eliminated by employing a non-rigid dynamic matching method, thereby enhancing the resolution and imaging accuracy of seismic data. The azimuth anisotropy correction effectively broadens the frequency range of the stack profile by 7 Hz, thereby enhancing the reliability of data for shale oil reservoir prediction in the study area. Megathrusts at convergent plate boundaries generate the largest and some of the most hazardous earthquakes on Earth. However, their physical properties, including those influencing fault slip accumulation and release and earthquake‐related surface displacements, are still poorly constrained at critical depths. Here, we combine seismic imaging and geodetic modeling to investigate the structure and mechanical behavior of the Main Himalayan Thrust fault (MHT) in the center of the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha rupture in Nepal. Our results from two independent observations consistently suggest the presence of a channel associated with the MHT with high compliance (shear modulus as low as ∼4 GPa) and strain anisotropy (stiffer in the vertical orientation than in the horizontal), likely arising from a weak subducting layer with north‐dipping foliation. Such mechanical heterogeneity significantly influences the quantification of short‐term fault kinematics and associated earthquake potential, with implications on across‐scale dynamics of plate boundaries in Himalaya and elsewhere. Plain Language Summary: The Main Himalayan Thrust fault marks the boundary where the Indian continent slides beneath the Eurasian plate, causing earthquakes like the 2015 magnitude 7.8 event in Nepal. Subsurface images constructed using seismic waves suggest a weak layer surrounding the fault. However, we show that the seismic signature of this layer changes depending on the direction in which the seismic waves travel through it. We compare this information on the subsurface structure to insights from static surface motions during the earthquake. We find that the fit to the motion is poor when we assume the subsurface rock around the fault has the same strength in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The fit improves when we assume the near‐fault rock is stronger under vertical compression than under horizontal compression. This assumption also helps explain the images constructed using seismic waves. We suggest that a strong oriented rock fabric develops in a channel around the plate boundary. The presence of this fabric may have influenced our estimates of fault slip before, during and after great earthquakes. Accurately describing this behavior is crucial for understanding the earthquake potential of plate boundary faults. The Shandong Peninsula is located in the eastern part of the North China Craton (NCC). Influenced by the collision between the North and South China blocks and the subduction of the Pacific Plate, the tectonic evolution process is highly complex. Previous studies have proposed that the thick cratonic root beneath the eastern NCC has been destructed. To better understand the relationship between the craton reactivation and the deep subduction, more constraints on the topography variations of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities are required. In this study, we stacked 9073 P‐to‐S receiver functions calculated from 129 broadband seismic stations to image the depth variations of the MTZ discontinuities beneath the Shandong Peninsula and its adjacent area. To decrease the influence of velocity anomaly above the MTZ discontinuities, we converted the apparent depths into corrected depth using regional and global 3D velocity models. The apparent depth of the 410‐km discontinuity exhibits a depression of approximately 6 km, which normalizes after velocity correction. This implies the existence of the low‐velocity anomaly in the upper mantle, possibly caused by slab dehydration and water infiltration into the upper mantle. The significant depression of the 660‐km discontinuity indicated the presence of the cold Pacific slab stagnating at the base of the MTZ. The gradual westward depression of the 660‐km discontinuity by 50 km could provide evidence for the sinking of the western margin of the flat‐lying subducting Pacific slab in the MTZ beneath the Shandong Peninsula. As one of the main seismic imaging methods, conventional reverse time migration (RTM) may not produce high-quality images in areas with non-flat surfaces and anisotropy because the complex surfaces have a great impact on seismic wave simulation, resulting in strong scattering waves. In addition, in isotropic acoustic (ISO) RTM, the neglection of the anisotropic effects will lead to incorrect travel times during source and receiver wavefield extrapolation. To overcome these problems, we develop a topographic pseudo-acoustic vertical transverse isotropic (VTI) RTM algorithm based on the body-fitted grid. In this method, we first derive anisotropic pseudo-acoustic wave equations in the curvilinear coordinate system. Then, the Lebedev grid finite-difference scheme is used to update these equations to simulate wavefields. Finally, we use the source-normalized cross-correlation imaging condition to realize RTM. Numerical tests are performed to evaluate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed method. The imaging results show that the proposed method can remove the effect of surface topography and anisotropy on seismic wave propagation and improve migration imaging precision. The effective utilization of medium-high temperature geothermal energy is pivotal in reducing carbon emissions and plays a crucial role in developing clean energy technologies. The MiDu geothermal field, situated in the southeastern region of Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, lies within the Mediterranean–Himalayan high-temperature geothermal belt and is characterized by abundant geothermal resources. However, due to its considerable depth, exploration poses significant risks, resulting in a total utilization rate of less than 0.5% of the total reserves. This study employs natural seismic data to perform a tomographic analysis of the geothermal system in the Midu basin. By examining the P-wave velocity (Vp) and the velocity ratio of P-waves and S-waves (Vp/Vs) at various depths, the findings reveal that the basin comprises two distinct structural layers: the thrust basement of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic eras and the strike–slip extensional sedimentary layer of the Cenozoic era. A low-velocity anomaly in the central basin corresponds to the loose Cenozoic sedimentary layer. In contrast, high-velocity anomalies at the basin edges correlate with boundary faults and the Mesozoic–Paleozoic strata. Below a depth of 4 km, the Red River Fault and MiDu Fault continue to dominate the basin's structure, whereas the influence of the Malipo Fault diminishes. The MiDu Fault exhibits higher thermal conductivity than the Yinjie Fault. It interfaces with multiple carbonate and basalt formations characterized by well-developed pores and fractures, making it a crucial conduit for water and a control point for geothermal storage. Consequently, the existence of medium-high temperature (>90 °C) geothermal resources for power generation should be concentrated around the Midu fault on the western side of the basin, while the Yinjie fault area is more favorable for advancements in heating and wellness. This study introduces a novel multi-channel predictive deconvolution method enhanced by Shearlet-based sparse regularization, aimed at improving the accuracy and stability of subsurface seismic imaging, particularly in offshore wind farm site assessments. Traditional multi-channel predictive deconvolution techniques often struggle with noise interference, limiting their effectiveness. By integrating Shearlet transform into the multi-channel predictive framework, our approach leverages its directional and multiscale properties to enhance sparsity and directionality in seismic data representation. Tests on both synthetic and field data demonstrate that our method not only provides more accurate seismic images but also shows significant resilience to noise, compared to conventional methods. These findings suggest that the proposed technique can substantially improve geological feature identification and has great potential for enhancing the efficiency of seabed surveys in marine renewable energy development. Featured Application: The work reported in this paper contributes to the further improvement of the reverse-time migration imaging accuracy of VSP data, which has broad application prospects for oil and gas exploration of unconventional reservoirs. Vertical seismic profiling has garnered widespread attention in the industry as a supplement to seismic exploration due to its higher data quality compared to surface seismic data. However, its unique observation system in which geophones are only distributed within observation wells results in uneven coverage of subsurface structures. This can lead to significant noise when directly applying conventional reverse-time migration techniques used in surface seismic imaging. This study addresses the issue of noise suppression in reverse-time migration imaging associated with walk-away vertical seismic profiling and presents two main innovations. First, a common-receiver reverse-time migration imaging method is proposed, which uses the observation signals as excitation signals for the corresponding shots after reverse-time processing. Second, an excitation-time-constrained cross-correlation imaging condition is introduced to eliminate non-contributing portions of the wavefield, thereby modifying the traditional cross-correlation imaging condition to include an excitation time constraint. The combination of these methods enhances imaging quality by effectively suppressing noise, as demonstrated through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations with synthetic models. Blended acquisition offers significant cost and period reduction in seismic data acquisition. However, fired blended sources are usually deployed at off-the-grid (OffG) samples due to obstacle limitation and economic cost considerations. The irregular distribution of coordinates, along with the blending noise, has a detrimental effect on the performance of subsequent seismic processing and imaging. The interpolated multichannel singular spectrum analysis (I-MSSA) algorithm effectively provides on-the-grid deblended results by employing an interpolator, in conjunction with a projected gradient descent strategy. However, the deblending accuracy and computational efficiency of the I-MSSA are still a concern due to the limitations of the traditional singular value decomposition (SVD). To address these limitations, we propose an interpolated fast damped multichannel singular spectrum analysis (I-FDMSSA) rank-reduction algorithm. The proposed algorithm incorporates the damping operator, the randomized SVD (RSVD) and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) strategy. The damping operator can further attenuate the remaining noise in the estimated signal obtained from the truncated SVD, resulting in an improved deblending performance. The RSVD accelerates the rank-reduction process by shrinking the size of the Hankel matrix. To expedite the rank-reduction and anti-diagonal averaging stages without explicitly constructing large-scale block Hankel matrices, the FFT strategy is employed. By incorporating a 2D separable sinc interpolator, the I-FDMSSA enables an efficient and accurate deblending of 3D OffG blended data. The deblending performance and operational efficiency improvements of the proposed I-FDMSSA algorithm over the traditional I-MSSA algorithm are demonstrated through OffG synthetic and field blended data examples. The seismic data acquisition design with 'two-wide and one-high' geometry effectively improves the imaging quality of seismic records. However, when data are acquired in the field, complex near surface conditions and environmental factors can introduce a variety of noises and gaps in seismic data, impacting the accuracy of seismic imaging. Currently, the method of low-rank matrix/tensor completion is commonly employed for data reconstruction after normal moveout (NMO). In a complex subsurface medium, common midpoint data processed with NMO may not satisfy the linear or quasi-linear assumptions within local data windows. Therefore, this paper exploits the inherent low-rank structure of high-dimensional data to propose a high-dimensional tensor completion method under the Frobenius-nuclear mixed norm constraint (FN-TC). This method unfolds the 4D data tensor into the frequency-space domain along its modes (m, n) and subsequently imposes a non-convex Frobenius-nuclear mixed norm constraint on the unfolded approximate matrices. This approach closely approximates the rank function of the factor matrices, thereby enhancing the accuracy of data modeling. Theoretical and practical studies demonstrate that the novel FN-TC approach can effectively reconstruct high-dimensional seismic data and suppress noise, thereby providing data support for subsequent high-precision seismic imaging. The anisotropy and attenuation properties of real earth media can lead to amplitude reduction and phase dispersion as seismic waves propagate through it. Ignoring these effects will degrade the resolution of seismic imaging profiles, thereby affecting the accuracy of geological interpretation. To characterize the impacts of viscosity and anisotropy, we formulate a modified pure-viscoacoustic (PU-V) wave equation including the decoupled fractional Laplacian (DFL) for tilted transversely isotropic (TTI) media, which enables the generation of stable wavefields that are resilient to noise interference. Numerical tests show that the newly derived PU-V wave equation is capable of accurately simulating the viscoacoustic wavefields in anisotropic media with strong attenuation. Building on our TTI PU-V wave equation, we implement stable reverse time migration technique with attenuation compensation (Q -TTI RTM), effectively migrating the impacts of anisotropy and compensates for attenuation. In the Q -TTI RTM workflow, to remove the unstable high-frequency components in attenuation-compensated wavefields, we construct a stable attenuation-compensated wavefield modeling (ACWM) operator. The proposed stable ACWM operator consists of velocity anisotropic and attenuation anisotropic parameters, effectively suppressing the high-frequency artifacts in the attenuation-compensated wavefield. Synthetic examples demonstrate that our stable Q -TTI RTM technique can simultaneously and accurately correct for the influences of anisotropy and attenuation, resulting in the high-quality imaging results. In fold-and-thrust belts where there is a high degree of structural complexity, artificial geometrical distortions are often present on seismic reflection profiles. These need to be minimized during modelling. We document a workflow in which depth mapping, velocity model building, well calibration and cross-section balancing are integrated into the seismic interpretation process to generate trustworthy structural models in complex zones. The proposed methodology is exemplified by a case study from the foothills zone of the Colombian Eastern Cordillera. In addition, sequential kinematic restoration of the modelled structure allowed an evaluation to be made of hydrocarbon migration routes during the period between the Oligocene and the middle Miocene. Following the previously mentioned workflow, we document a failed exploratory case study where all elements of the petroleum system are present except the trap. In this context, the documented case is a typical velocity pull-up. From this and published case studies, we conclude that in Andean settings and probably most on land contractional-foothill settings, the use of seismic images only does not provide enough evidence for the presence of traps and additional surface geological signatures must be documented. The proposed workflow therefore appears to be a useful tool for evaluating the exploration risk in structurally complex fold-and-thrust belt settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, the horizontal resolution of Rayleigh wave exploration is low. In this study, we propose the Born–Jordan time‐frequency distribution to analyse Rayleigh waves. The seismic signal was filtered with a wavelet transform for denoising, and the Rayleigh wave was separated in the time domain. Using the Born–Jordan time‐frequency distribution, the time waveform of each frequency comprising the Rayleigh wave from every seismic channel was obtained, and the time difference of the Rayleigh wave with the same frequency was calculated, based on which the dispersion curve between the two channels was obtained. Combined with the multichannel Rayleigh wave dispersion curve, phase velocity and frequency imaging under the seismic arrangement were obtained. Applying this method to detect abnormal geological bodies in engineering investigations showed that hard geologic bodies, such as comcrete rocks, have high velocity and frequency, whereas weak ones have low velocity and frequency. The doubly vergent orogen in Taiwan is a relatively young and active arc-continent collision caused by the convergence of Eurasian and Philippine Sea Plates occurring along a complicated seismogenic plate boundary. This study aims to investigate the evolutionary and tectonic features of the retro-wedge, a region contributing to the uplifting and shortening of the Taiwan orogen. Through the utilization of seismic tomographic image and relocated seismicity, we identify three potential seismogenic structures along the convergent plate boundary: the Longitudinal Valley Fault, the Ludao–Lanyu Fault, and the Central Range Fault. A significant discovery in our investigation is a west-dipping backthrust of the Central Range Fault, extending from the north Hualien city to the southeastern offshore at a distance of 300 km. The fault is responsible for the formation of a crustal-scale pop-up structure, contributing to the development of a double vergent orogenic wedge in the retro-wedge. The genesis of the basement-involved backthrust is attributed to the indentation of the exhumed forearc mantle wedge and remnant forearc crust into the Backbone Range during collision. Consequently, the plate boundary exhibits two opposite vergent thrust systems of the Longitudinal Valley Fault–Ludao–Lanyu Fault and Central Range Fault, which evolved during different stages of collision-incipient and mature following the closure of the forearc basin of the North Luzon Trough and Longitudinal Valley, respectively. The structure of fault zones and the ruptures they host are inextricably linked. Fault zones are narrow, which has made imaging their structure at seismogenic depths a persistent problem. Fiber‐optic seismology allows for low‐maintenance, long‐term deployments of dense seismic arrays, which present new opportunities to address this problem. We use a fiber array that crosses the Garlock Fault to explore its structure. With a multifaceted imaging approach, we peel back the shallow structure around the fault to see how the fault changes with depth in the crust. We first generate a shallow velocity model across the fault with a joint inversion of active source and ambient noise data. Subsequently, we investigate the fault at deeper depths using travel‐time observations from local earthquakes. By comparing the shallow velocity model and the earthquake travel‐time observations, we find that the fault's low‐velocity zone below the top few hundred meters is at most unexpectedly narrow, potentially indicating fault zone healing. Using differential travel‐time measurements from earthquake pairs, we resolve a sharp bimaterial contrast at depth that suggests preferred westward rupture directivity. Imaging fault zones at depth, where large earthquakes typically happen, is challenging because fault zones are narrow and seismic imaging resolution degrades with depth. Dense seismic arrays deployed across faults can help resolve important properties of fault zones at depth. Fiber optic seismology allows for the deployment of dense arrays across faults for long periods of time with low logistical burden. We use a fiber optic array that crosses the Garlock Fault to explore important characteristics of the fault zone at different depths. We find that there is no extensive low velocity feature at depth, potentially suggesting healing of the fault damage zone. Additionally, when we remove the contribution of the complicated velocity structure of the shallow crust, we recover a sharp velocity contrast across the fault which may have implications for the propagation behavior of future ruptures. Systematical investigation of deep mantle structure beneath the Pamir Plateau, western Tian Shan and their surroundings is of great significance to understand dynamics of continental collision, intracontinental orogenesis and deformation in response to the Indo‐Eurasian collision. In this research, we imaged the mantle transition zone (MTZ) structure beneath these regions using 42,560 P‐wave receiver functions obtained from 352 seismic stations and 6,173 teleseismic events. Our results reveal significant 15–20 km depression of the 410‐km discontinuity (d410) mainly beneath the southern Kazakh Shield, which is consistent with the low‐velocity anomaly in tomographic models and thus attributed to the mantle upwelling from the MTZ, providing evidence for the fossil Tian Shan plume responsible for the Late Cretaceous‐Paleocene basaltic magmatism (74–52 Ma) at the western Tian Shan. Considering that the d410 is slightly depressed by ∼8 km beneath the western Tian Shan, deep subduction of the Tarim lithosphere is likely excluded and its subhorizontal indentation into the Tian Shan is preferred. As a result, segments of thickened Tian Shan lithosphere delaminated and accumulated near the 660‐km discontinuity (d660), which induce small‐scale upwelling across the d410 there. The d410 is depressed by ∼10–15 km beneath Tarim, which is interpreted to be caused by the mantle upwelling originating from beneath the d410. The d660 below the central Hindu Kush is extremely depressed by 25–30 km, providing direct evidence for the deep subduction of Indian lithosphere into the bottom of the MTZ and suggesting different mechanisms for continental collision between the Hindu Kush and Pamir Plateau. Furthermore, mantle upwelling from the MTZ beneath the Tarim Basin is indicated by the depressed d410 there (∼10–15 km). The Hengill volcano and its associated geothermal fields represent Iceland's most productive harnessed high‐temperature geothermal fields, where resources are fueled by cooling magmatic intrusions connected to three volcanic systems. The crustal structure in this area is highly heterogeneous and shaped by the intricate interplay between tectonic forces and magmatic/hydrothermal activities. This complexity makes detailed subsurface characterization challenging. In this study, we aim to push the current resolution limits using a 500‐node temporary seismic array and perform an isotropic and, for the first time, radially‐anisotropic velocity model of the area. The high‐resolution isotropic velocity model reveals the characteristic N30ºE fissure swarm that crosses the area within the top 500 m and outlines a deep‐seated low‐velocity body composed of cooling magmatic intrusions at 5 km depth. This deeper body is located near the eastern part of the three volcanic centers and connected to a shallower body at 2–3 km depth that strikes westward toward Hengill volcano. Additionally, our study discovered that non‐induced earthquakes deeper than 2 km align with velocity contrasts that reflect structural variability, indicating the potential to identify deep permeable pathways using dense array imaging. The anisotropic model indicates that the shallow crust of Hengill within the top 2 km is dominated by vertical fractures or cracks, likely attributed to overall divergent deformation from rifting in the study area. This characteristic is diminished at depths greater than 2–3 km, replaced by a layering pattern where the lava flows and/or subhorizontal intrusions become the primary factors influencing the observed anisotropy. Using 500 temporary seismic sensors, we use seismic waves to image the subsurface and unveil structures with unprecedented detail. We observe both shallow and deep structures within the top 5 km. Specifically, we identify a shallow crust that coincides with a fractured region that is observed on the surface, along with regions where the seismic waves travel slower and we interpret to be hot magmatic intrusions at 4–5 km depth that power the geothermal fields above. Additionally, we observe that natural seismicity tends to occur near velocity contrasts that likely indicate structural boundaries. We interpret this observation as potential permeable pathways where hot fluids ascend to the shallow crust. In plate kinematic reconstructions, the restoration of rifted margins and their fossil equivalents exposed in orogens remains challenging. Tight fit reconstructions rely on the mapping of margins rift domains, their restoration to their pre-rift crustal thickness, and the removal of the oceanic and exhumed mantle domains. At present-day margins, high-resolution wide-angle seismic imaging allows mapping and measurement of rift domains; however, restoring fossil margins is trickier because they are largely overprinted and partially lost during convergence. Here, we present a new kinematic model for the Mesozoic rifting along the Tethys–Atlantic junction, which relies on two assumptions: (1) the width of the fossil Alpine Tethys rift domains was comparable to that of their present-day analogs, and (2) the necking zones of the former tectonic plates can be mapped, dated and used as kinematic markers. This reproducible workflow allows us, for the first time, to restore the rifted margins of the Alpine Tethys. Our reconstruction shows: (1) a westward propagation of extension through the Ionian, Alpine Tethys and Pyrenean rift systems from the Triassic to the Cretaceous, (2) the segmentation of the Mesozoic Tethyan rifted margins by strike-slip corridors, (3) the opening of an oceanic gateway at 165 Ma as mantle was exhumed along the entire Alpine Tethys and (4) the subdivision of the Mesozoic oceanic domain into compartments that were later consumed during subduction. The inverted velocity model obtained from the reflection tomography based on the angle domain common‐image gathers has a certain fuzziness. The inverted velocity model's stratigraphic interface is always not clear enough in areas with complex stratigraphic structure. In order to improve the accuracy and resolution of the inverted velocity model, a double‐difference constraint condition is added on the basis of minimizing the absolute travel‐time residual at the subsurface imaging points. This constraint makes the inverted velocity model local structure information more refined by minimizing the differential travel‐time residual at adjacent imaging points (i.e. closely spaced points within the same layer) and makes the variation of velocity model information within a certain range more accurate. The method in this paper is based on angle domain common‐image gathers, the tomography inversion equation is established by using the ray tracing method, and the conversion relationship between the traveltime residual and the residual curvature of the angle domain common‐image gathers. Then, by adding differential constraint and double‐differential constraint conditions and using the least squares QR decomposition method to solve the set of equations, the inverted velocity model can be obtained through multiple iterations, which provides a high‐precision velocity field for the migration and improves the accuracy of seismic imaging. Numerical experiments on both one typical model and a field data example demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed double‐difference constrained elastic reflection tomography in generating high‐precision velocity models. Considering the anisotropy of the earth media is helpful in reducing the depth error between seismic and drilling and providing reliable imaging data for seismic interpretation and inversion. Transversely isotropic media with a vertical axis of symmetry are the most common type of anisotropic media and have been under constant study. The separation of the P‐ and S‐wavefields, which affects the accuracy of elastic wave imaging and the inversion in transversely isotropic media with a vertical axis of symmetry, is a hot research topic. Among the commonly used wavefield decoupling methods, the S‐wave is typically obtained by subtracting the P‐wave from the total wavefield. However, this kind of wavefield decoupling method often leads to severe P‐wave crosstalk in the separated S‐wavefield; thus, it needs further development. In this paper, the principle that the divergence of the S‐wave is zero is employed to solve the unresolved S‐wave elastic parameters of the S‐wave stiffness matrix by utilizing the modified zero‐order pseudo‐Helmholtz decomposition operator. The obtained S‐wave elastic parameters are employed to construct the qS‐wave stress and facilitate the derivation of the relationship between the qS‐wave particle velocity and the qS‐wave stress. Furthermore, a qS‐wave decoupling first‐order velocity–stress equation, which matches the qP‐wave decoupling first‐order velocity–stress equation, is derived. By jointly using the decoupling equations of qS‐ and qP‐wave, the separation of the P‐ and S‐wavefields in transversely isotropic media with a vertical axis of symmetry is realized. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated via numerical tests conducted to assess the wavefield separation. Moreover, a complex model is employed to perform elastic reverse‐time migration, resulting in the acquisition of accurate imaging results for PP, PS, SP, and SS waves, without the presence of significant artefacts. The correctness of the qS‐wave decoupling equation in transversely isotropic media with a vertical axis of symmetry is confirmed by the comparative tests using decoupling methods in isotropic media. As the typical products of collisional orogeny, gneiss domes are important geological units with which to decipher the crustal deformation and evolutionary history of continental collision. However, their formation mechanisms remain poorly understood. This issue is well illustrated by the debate surrounding the origin of the North Himalaya gneiss dome zone, which has been attributed to middle-crustal channel flow, thrust-duplex development, extensional detachment faulting, or diapiric flow related to partial crustal melting. These models predict different internal structures within individual domes that can be tested by high-resolution seismic imaging. Here, we present newly acquired seismic-reflection data collected along an ~120-km-long north-south traverse across the central segment of the North Himalaya gneiss dome zone. Analysis and interpretation of the seismic data constrained by surface geology observations imply that (1) the subducting Indian lower crust is decoupled from the deformed middle and upper crust in the North Himalaya, (2) a crustal-scale stack of antiformal duplexes with a structural thickness of ~35 km defines the cores of the gneiss domes imaged by the seismic survey, and (3) highly reflective, sheetlike bodies imaged in our seismic profile are best interpreted as leucocratic intrusions developed synchronously during gneiss dome development. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is an emerging technique for ultra-dense seismic observation, which provides a new method for high-resolution sub-surface seismic imaging. Recently a large number of linear DAS arrays have been used for two-dimensional S-wave near-surface imaging in urban areas. In order to explore the feasibility of three-dimensional (3D) structure imaging using a DAS array, we carried out an active source experiment at the Beijing National Earth Observatory. We deployed a 1 km optical cable in a rectangular shape, and the optical cable was recast into 250 sensors with a channel spacing of 4 m. The DAS array clearly recorded the P, S and surface waves generated by a hammer source. The first-arrival P wave travel times were first picked with a Short-Term Average/Long-Term Average (STA/LTA) method and further manually checked. The P-wave signals recorded by the DAS are consistent with those recorded by the horizontal components of short-period seismometers. At shorter source-receiver distances, the picked P-wave arrivals from the DAS recording are consistent with vertical component recordings of seismometers, but they clearly lag behind the latter at greater distances. This is likely due to a combination of the signal-to-noise ratio and the polarization of the incoming wave. Then, we used the TomoDD software to invert the 3D P-wave velocity structure for the uppermost 50 m with a resolution of 10 m. The inverted P-wave velocity structures agree well with the S-wave velocity structure previously obtained through ambient noise tomography. Our study indicates the feasibility of 3D near-surface imaging with the active source and DAS array. However, the inverted absolute velocity values at large depths may be biased due to potential time shifts between the DAS recording and seismometer at large source-receiver distances. Recently, the "sweet spot" of a fractured reservoir, controlled by a strike-slip fault, has been found and become the favorable target for economic exploitation of deep (>4500 m) tight gas reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin, Southwestern China. However, hidden faults of small vertical displacements (<20 m) are generally difficult to identify using low signal–noise rate seismic data for deep subsurfaces. In this study, we propose a seismic processing method to improve imaging of the hidden strike-slip fault in the central Sichuan Basin. On the basis of the multidirectional and multiscale decomposition and reconstruction processes, seismic information on the strike-slip fault can be automatically enhanced to improve images of it. Through seismic processing, the seismic resolution increased to a large extent enhancing the fault information and presenting a distinct fault plane rather than an ambiguous deflection of the seismic wave, as well as a clearer image of the sectional seismic attributes. Subsequently, many more small strike-slip faults, III–IV order faults with a vertical displacement, in the range of 5–20 m, were identified with the reprocessing data for the central Sichuan Basin. The pre-Mesozoic intracratonic strike-slip fault system was also characterized using segmentation and paralleled dispersive distribution in the Sichuan Basin, suggesting that this seismic process method is applicable for the identification of deep, small strike-slip faults, and there is great potential for the fractured reservoirs along small strike-slip fault zones in deep tight matrix reservoirs. We calculated stress drops for 2875 small intraslab earthquakes at intermediate depths beneath Tohoku, Japan. We applied an S-coda-wave spectral ratio method to almost 900,000 event pairs. Detailed velocity values for the oceanic crust (OC) were adopted from previous observational studies. The median stress drops in the OC are about half those in the oceanic mantle (OM). The median stress drop for earthquakes in the OC decreases from depths of 70 to 120 km and increases from 120 to 170 km. Our preferred interpretation is that the rigidity in the OC decreases and then increases with depth due to combined effects of the dehydration associated with the eclogite formation and the increasing temperature with depth. These depth variations are consistent with results of a similar study beneath Hokkaido. The median stress drops in the oceanic plate beneath Tohoku are generally smaller than those beneath Hokkaido. Previous studies imaging the seismic structure at shallow depths and b-value analyses of intraslab earthquakes indicate that the near-trench region of the oceanic plate off Tohoku is more hydrated than that off Hokkaido. Taken together, these results suggest that differences in the degree of hydration of the oceanic plate in the near-trench regions could produce the different behaviors of stress drops of intermediate-depth earthquakes observed in Tohoku and Hokkaido. Nowadays, the most successful applications of full‐waveform inversion (FWI) involve marine seismic data under acoustic approximations. Elastic FWI of land seismic data is still challenging in theory and practice. Here, we propose a full dispersion spectrum inversion method and apply it to seismic data acquired in West Antarctica. Inspired by the conventional surface wave dispersion curve inversion method, we propose to invert the surface wave dispersion spectrum instead of the complicated waveforms. We compare the frequency‐velocity, frequency‐slowness, and frequency‐wavenumber spectra in terms of their ability to resolve dispersion modes and the feasibility of their adjoint updates and conclude that the frequency‐slowness spectrum is the best for our inversion objectives. We test four objective functions, subtraction, zero‐lag crosscorrelation, optimal transport, and the local‐crosscorrelation to quantify the spectrum mismatch and provide the corresponding adjoint source. We then theoretically analyze the convexity of the proposed objective functions and examine their convergence behavior using numerical examples. We also compare the proposed method with the classic FWI method and the traditional surface wave dispersion curve inversion method and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method. This technique is employed to evaluate the shallow velocity structures beneath a seismic array stationed in West Antarctica. Our proposed inversion scheme is also useful for more general applications such as imaging the shallow subsurface of the critical zones, like geothermal reservoirs, and CO2 storage sites. With the growing interest in clean energy and CO2 sequestration, exploring the subsurface in land is becoming crucial. However, there are only a few success stories of seismic FWI applied to land data mainly because of the complexity of the near‐surface and the increased nonlinearity of the problem. Here, we propose a full dispersion spectrum inversion method that seeks optimal velocity models in the subsurface by matching the seismic dispersion spectra. Dispersion spectra are the skeleton of seismic surface waves, which are simpler to quantify yet retain the key dispersion information of surface waves. It is generally easier for humans, as well as algorithms, to match simplified representations of the observed and simulated data, such as the dispersion spectrum, instead of the seismic waveforms themselves. The proposed method expands conventional 1D dispersion curve inversion to multiple dimensions and is accomplished under the framework of FWI. Seamounts and basaltic basement can influence deformation and mass fluxes within subduction zones. We examined seamounts and volcanic units across the western Hikurangi Plateau, near the Hikurangi subduction margin, New Zealand, with seismic reflection images. Volcanism at the Hikurangi Plateau occurred in at least three phases that we attribute to (1) Early Cretaceous large igneous province formation, the top of which is marked by laterally continuous and dipping wedges of reflections that we interpret as lava flows; (2) Late Cretaceous seamounts and volcaniclastics that erupted onto the crust of the Hikurangi Plateau and make up the majority of seamount volume and basement relief; and (3) late-stage, Pliocene volcanics that erupted through and adjacent to Cretaceous seamounts and younger sediments of the northcentral Hikurangi Plateau. The Pliocene volcanoes do not appear to be strongly welded to the plateau basement and may be petit spot volcanoes that are related to the displacement and accumulation of hydrous transition zone melts. Large seamounts and volcaniclastic units are evenly distributed across most of the Hikurangi Plateau near the Hikurangi margin but are absent from the Pegasus Basin. Although faults are imaged throughout the basement of the Pegasus Basin, contemporary normal faulting of the Hikurangi Plateau is uncommon, except for a zone of Quaternary normal faults near the Pliocene volcanics. These trends indicate that the Hikurangi megathrust may be more influenced by volcanic structures in the north and central Hikurangi margin, where plateau rifting and voluminous seamount eruptions have more substantially overprinted the original Early Cretaceous basement. The pseudo-differential operator with symbol | k |α has been widely used in seismic modelling and imaging when involving attenuation, anisotropy and one-way wave equation, which is usually calculated using the pseudo-spectral method. For large-scale problems, applying high-dimensional Fourier transforms to solve the wave equation that includes pseudo-differential operators is much more expensive than finite-difference approaches, and it is not suitable for parallel computing with domain decomposition. To mitigate this difficulty, we present a truncated space-domain convolution method to efficiently compute the pseudo-differential operator |$\sqrt{-\nabla ^2}$|⁠ , and then apply it to viscoacoustic reverse-time migration. Although |$\sqrt{-\nabla ^2}$| is theoretically non-local in the space domain, we take the limited frequency band of seismic data into account, and constrain the approximated convolution stencil to a finite length. The convolution coefficients are computed by solving a least-squares inverse problem in the wavenumber domain. In addition, we exploit the symmetry of the resulting convolution stencil and develop a fast spatial convolution algorithm. The applications of the proposed method in Q -compensated reverse-time migration demonstrate that it is a good alternative to the pseudo-spectral method for computing the pseudo-differential operator |$\sqrt{-\nabla ^2}$|⁠ , with almost the same accuracy but much higher efficiency. Material density remains poorly constrained in seismic imaging problems, yet knowledge of density would provide important insight into physical material properties for the interpretation of subsurface structures. We test the sensitivity to subsurface density contrasts of spatial and temporal gradients of seismic ambient noise wavefields, using wave equation inversion (WEI), a form of seismic gradiometry. Synthetic results for 3-D acoustic media suggest that it is possible to estimate relative density structure with WEI by using a full acoustic formulation for wave propagation and gradiometry. We show that imposing a constant density assumption on the medium can be detrimental to subsurface seismic velocity images. By contrast, the full acoustic formulation allows us to estimate density as an additional material parameter, as well as to improve phase velocity estimates. In 3-D elastic media, severe approximations in the governing wave physics are necessary in order to invert for density using only an array of receivers on the Earth's free surface. It is then not straightforward to isolate the comparatively weak density signal from the influence of phase velocity using gradiometric WEI. However, by using receivers both at the surface and in the shallow subsurface we show that it is possible to estimate density using fully elastic volumetric WEI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The presence of coherent noise in seismic data leads to errors and uncertainties, and as such it is paramount to suppress noise as early and efficiently as possible. Self‐supervised denoising circumvents the common requirement of deep learning procedures of having noisy‐clean training pairs. However, self‐supervised coherent noise suppression methods require extensive knowledge of the noise statistics. We propose the use of explainable artificial intelligence approaches to 'see inside the black box' that is the denoising network and use the gained knowledge to replace the need for any prior knowledge of the noise itself. This is achieved in practice by leveraging bias‐free networks and the direct linear link between input and output provided by the associated Jacobian matrix; we show that a simple averaging of the Jacobian contributions over a number of randomly selected input pixels provides an indication of the most effective mask to suppress noise present in the data. The proposed method, therefore, becomes a fully automated denoising procedure requiring no clean training labels or prior knowledge. Realistic synthetic examples with noise signals of varying complexities, ranging from simple time‐correlated noise to complex pseudo‐rig noise propagating at the velocity of the ocean, are used to validate the proposed approach. Its automated nature is highlighted further by an application to two field data sets. Without any substantial pre‐processing or any knowledge of the acquisition environment, the automatically identified blind masks are shown to perform well in suppressing both trace‐wise noise in common shot gathers from the Volve marine data set and coloured noise in post‐stack seismic images from a land seismic survey. Improving the resolution of seismic migration images plays an important role for geophysical interpreters to characterize underground reservoirs. However, the classical image domain least‐squares migration method based on the local‐stationary assumption cannot obtain a satisfactory high‐resolution seismic image due to the significant spatial variant characteristics of the point spread function. To mitigate this problem, we proposed a high‐resolution point spread function deconvolution method and applied it to two‐dimensional cases. Nevertheless, extending the two‐dimensional method to three‐dimensional problems directly would fail due to the intrinsic complexity in three‐dimensional cases. In this study, we resolve the differences encountered in the point spread function deconvolution method for two‐ and three‐dimensional cases and provide specific strategies for achieving high‐resolution imaging with low computational cost when extending the point spread function deconvolution method to three‐dimensional cases. The main schemes include (1) incorporating the analytical expression of the point spread function to guide the generation of three‐dimensional point spread function distributions, (2) extending the point spread function filter calculation method from a two‐dimensional square to a three‐dimensional rectangular prism and (3) interpolating to obtain more compact point spread functions for reducing migration artefacts. Results from the three‐dimensional synthetic Overthrust model and field data set demonstrate that our techniques could effectively enhance the spatial resolution of the migration images with reduced migration artefacts. With these specific strategies, the space‐variant point spread function deconvolution algorithm shows superior performance on three‐dimensional cases at a much lower computational cost compared with the classical least‐squares migration method and the local‐stationary deblurring method. Synthetic tests and real data applications confirm that the space‐variant point spread function deconvolution method has distinct advantages over both two‐ and three‐dimensional problems and can be widely adopted in practice. The Mongolian Plateau in Central Asia is an intracontinental tectonic system far from active plate boundaries. Despite its distance from these boundaries, the plateau is characterized by intense crustal deformation accompanied by voluminous Cenozoic volcanism and active modern seismicity. However, the intraplate deformation mechanism has long been debated owing to the scarcity of observations and contradictions between different results. In recent years, growing geophysical studies have been conducted on the Mongolian Plateau, providing constraints on its lithospheric structure and dynamics. Here, we review the geophysical research on the Mongolian Plateau over the last decade, including seismological, geodetic, gravity, magnetotelluric, and geodynamic aspects. This review aims to (a) describe crustal and mantle structures based on multiscale seismic images; (b) describe deformation patterns based on seismic anisotropy, focal mechanisms, and global positioning system (GPS) observations; and (c) discuss the mechanisms behind intraplate deformation, volcanism, and seismic activity across the Mongolian Plateau. Seismic images show that the crustal structure of the plateau has significant east-west differences. Several blocks in the western Mongolian Plateau have thick crusts, including the Altai Mountains, Hovsgol Rift, and Hangay Dome. The lithospheric deformation across the Mongolian Plateau has strong lateral variation, with NE-SW shortening in the Altai Mountains and W-E or NW-SE shear deformation in the Hangay Dome region and the eastern part. The varied deformation may result from the superposition of multiple mechanisms, including far-field stress in the Altai Mountains, mantle upwelling, and mantle flow in the Hangay Dome region. However, it is difficult to identify the geodynamics of the formation of the entire Mongolian Plateau because the deformation is too complicated, and the present models are not sufficient and are always partial. Overall, this review encompasses recent advances in seismic observations of the Mongolian Plateau, illuminates the heterogeneities in the crust and mantle structure and deformation of the plateau, and discusses the mechanisms behind the deformation, magmatism, and seismicity. Multicomponent seismic exploration offers advantages in precisely describing complicated geological structures compared with conventional PP-wave exploration. For multicomponent ocean bottom node (OBN) seismic data, due to the complication of the seismic-wave propagation path and the diffuse scattering of wavefield energy in rugged seabeds, the reflections show distortion and crossover characteristics, resulting in the distortion of underlying strata in migration sections. Furthermore, the common midpoint stacking approach based on the uniform datum is no longer applicable because of the large elevation differences between sources and receivers. In this study, we propose a PP- and PS-waves prestack time migration (PSTM) method for OBN acquisition with rugged seabeds. The proposed method can significantly improve the imaging quality by correcting the downward P-wave traveltime in seawater and adopting an optimized migration aperture from the formation dip-angle model. Moreover, we develop feasible strategies to establish formation dip-angle and PP- and PS-migration velocity models. The typical feature of the improvements we make on PSTM is that the non-hyperbolic moveouts of both PP- and PS-waves on common image gathers induced by the non-uniform elevations of shot and receiver points and the asymmetry ray path of PS-wave are corrected to be quasi-hyperbolic. Numerical tests and field data applications demonstrate that our method can effectively image underlying structures with rugged seabeds and has potential in multicomponent OBN exploration. Geometrical heterogeneity of the subducting Indian continental crust along the Himalaya‐Tibet collision zone remains enigmatic. Mass budget estimates describing shortening across the orogen are partly derived from observations made from seismic imaging of the deep earth. Here, using data from 38 broadband seismic stations covering Sikkim Himalaya, we produce high resolution seismic images in order to fill crucial gaps in our understanding of the evolution of Himalayan collision zone. We used 12,288 high quality receiver functions computed using waveforms of earthquakes having magnitude >5.5 in the distance range of 30°–100°. Our results reveal a highly imbricated and heterogeneous crust beneath Sikkim Himalaya. The Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) responsible for large scale earthquakes in the Himalayan collision zone is not so distinct in the migrated images, but intermittent. A dominant cluster of earthquakes at shallower depths is associated with the MHT, marked by negative amplitude arrivals. The Moho is found to be gently dipping, reaching depths of ∼60 km beneath the Higher Himalaya compared to ∼40 km in the Himalayan foredeep. Interestingly, the Moho in this part of Himalaya has offsets and overlapping segments, indicating crustal imbrication in response to active shortening. Clusters of lower crustal earthquakes coincide with the junction of offsets in the Moho.
