This paper discusses current formulations based on fuzzy-logic control concepts as applied to the removal of impulsive noise from digital images. We also discuss the various principles related to fuzzy-ruled based logic control techniques, aiming at preserving edges and digital image details efficiently. Detailed descriptions of a number of formulations for recently developed fuzzy-rule logic controlled filters are provided, highlighting the merit of each filter. Fuzzy-rule based filtering algorithms may be designed assuming the tailoring of specific functional sub-modules: (a) logical controlled variable selection, (b) the consideration of different methods for the generation of fuzzy rules and membership functions, (c) the integration of the logical rules for detecting and filtering impulse noise from digital images. More specifically, we discuss impulse noise models and window-based filtering using fuzzy inference based on vector directional filters as associated with the filtering of RGB color images and then explain how fuzzy vector fields can be generated using standard operations on fuzzy sets taking into consideration fixed or random valued impulse noise and fuzzy vector partitioning. We also discuss how fuzzy cellular automata may be used for noise removal by adopting a Moore neighbourhood architecture. We also explain the potential merits of adopting a fuzzy rule based deep learning ensemble classifier which is composed of a convolutional neural network (CNN), a recurrent neural networks (RNN), a long short term memory neural network (LSTM) and a gated recurrent unit (GRU) approaches, all within a fuzzy min-max (FMM) ensemble. Fuzzy non-local mean filter approaches are also considered. A comparison of various performance metrics for conventional and fuzzy logic based filters as well as deep learning filters is provided. The algorhitms discussed have the following advantageous properties: high quality of edge preservation, high quality of spatial noise suppression capability especially for complex images, sound properties of noise removal (in cases when both mixed additive and impulse noise are present), and very fast computational implementation. Summary: This paper proposes a novel one‐port passive circuit topology consisting of a two‐dimensional network of resistors and capacitors, which can be used as a fault‐tolerant building block for analog circuit design. Through an analytical procedure, the network is shown to follow simple first‐order admittance dynamics. A Monte Carlo method is employed to describe the effect of simultaneous faults (short or open circuit) in random network elements in terms of confidence bounds in the frequency‐domain admittance profile. Faults in 10% of the elements resulted in only minor changes of the frequency response (up to 3.9 dB in magnitude and 12.5 ∘ in phase in 95% of the cases). We discuss the feasibility of wireless terahertz communications links deployed in a metropolitan area and model the large-scale fading of such channels. The model takes into account reception through direct line of sight, ground and wall reflection, as well as diffraction around a corner. The movement of the receiver is modeled by an autonomous dynamic linear system in state space, whereas the geometric relations involved in the attenuation and multipath propagation of the electric field are described by a static nonlinear mapping. A subspace algorithm in conjunction with polynomial regression is used to identify a single-output Wiener model from time-domain measurements of the field intensity when the receiver motion is simulated using a constant angular speed and an exponentially decaying radius. The identification procedure is validated by using the model to perform q-step ahead predictions. The sensitivity of the algorithm to small-scale fading, detector noise, and atmospheric changes are discussed. The performance of the algorithm is tested in the diffraction zone assuming a range of emitter frequencies (2, 38, 60, 100, 140, and 400 GHz). Extensions of the simulation results to situations where a more complicated trajectory describes the motion of the receiver are also implemented, providing information on the performance of the algorithm under a worst case scenario. Finally, a sensitivity analysis to model parameters for the identified Wiener system is proposed. A quasi-optical deembedding technique for characterizing waveguides is demonstrated using wide-band time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy. A transfer function representation is adopted for the description of the signal in the input and output port of the waveguides. The time-domain responses were discretized and the waveguide transfer function was obtained through a parametric approach in the z-domain after describing the system with an AutoRegressive with eXogenous input (ARX), as well as with a state-space model. Prior to the identification procedure, filtering was performed in the wavelet domain to minimize both signal distortion, as well as the noise propagating in the ARX and subspace models. The optimal filtering procedure used in the wavelet domain for the recorded tune-domain signatures is described in detail. The effect of filtering prior to the identification procedures is elucidated with the aid of pole-zero diagrams. Models derived from measurements of terahertz transients in a precision WR-8 waveguide adjustable short are presented. In this paper, we present rule-based fuzzy inference systems that consist of a series of mathematical representations based on fuzzy concepts in the filtering structure. It is crucial for understanding and discussing different principles associated with fuzzy filter design procedures. A number of typical fuzzy multichannel filtering approaches are provided in order to clarify the different fuzzy filter designs and compare different algorithms. In particular, in most practical applications (i.e., biomedical image analysis), the emphasis is placed primarily on fuzzy filtering algorithms, with the main advantages of restoration of corrupted medical images and the interpretation capability, along with the capability of edge preservation and relevant image information for accurate diagnosis of diseases. A study was conducted to analyze a method for the noninvasive continuous measurement of leaf water content. The method is based on transmission measurements of terahertz radiation supporting a null-balance quasi-optical transmissometer operating at 94 GHz. A framework for the propagation of terahertz radiation through leaves is then developed. Results showed that transmittance measurements correlated well with measurements of leaf thickness and water content.

Diffusion dynamics of water and oil are observed in real-time using video images. Savitzky–Golay derivative filtering ensures accurate localization of the liquid front. System identification demonstrates that a fractional-order model with only two parameters may be used to describe the dynamics of the diffusion process. Mining algorithms for Dynamic Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) of breast tissue are discussed. The algorithms are based on recent advances in multi-dimensional signal processing and aim to advance current state-of-the-art computer-aided detection and analysis of breast tumours when these are observed at various states of development. The topics discussed include image feature extraction, information fusion using radiomics, multi-parametric computer-aided classification and diagnosis using information fusion of tensorial datasets as well as Clifford algebra based classification approaches and convolutional neural network deep learning methodologies. The discussion also extends to semi-supervised deep learning and self-supervised strategies as well as generative adversarial networks and algorithms using generated confrontational learning approaches. In order to address the problem of weakly labelled tumour images, generative adversarial deep learning strategies are considered for the classification of different tumour types. The proposed data fusion approaches provide a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) based framework for more robust image registration that can potentially advance the early identification of heterogeneous tumour types, even when the associated imaged organs are registered as separate entities embedded in more complex geometric spaces. Finally, the general structure of a high-dimensional medical imaging analysis platform that is based on multi-task detection and learning is proposed as a way forward. The proposed algorithm makes use of novel loss functions that form the building blocks for a generated confrontation learning methodology that can be used for tensorial DCE-MRI. Since some of the approaches discussed are also based on time-lapse imaging, conclusions on the rate of proliferation of the disease can be made possible. A fractional-order internal model control technique is applied to a three-dimensional resistive-capacitive network to enforce desired closed-loop dynamics of first order. In order to handle model mismatch issues resulting from the random allocation of the components within the network, the control law is augmented with a model-reference adaptive strategy in an external loop. By imposing a control law on the system to obey first order dynamics, a calibrated transient response is ensured. The methodology enables feedback control of complex systems with emergent responses and is robust in the presence of measurement noise or under conditions of poor model identification. Furthermore, it is also applicable to systems that exhibit higher order fractional dynamics. Examples of feedback-controlled transduction include cantilever positioning in atomic force microscopy or the control of complex de-excitation lifetimes encountered in many types of spectroscopies, e.g., nuclear magnetic, electron-spin, microwave, multiphoton fluorescence, Förster resonance, etc. The proposed solution should also find important applications in more complex electronic, microwave, and photonic lock-in problems. Finally, there are further applications across the broader measurement science and instrumentation community when designing complex feedback systems at the system level, e.g., ensuring the adaptive control of distributed physiological processes through the use of biomedical implants. This paper proposes a systematic procedure for the determination of state-space models from an available descriptor representation of a linear dynamic system. The goal is to determine a state equation, a set of algebraic equations and an output equation in terms of the state and input variables. It is shown that standard methods may fail to convert the descriptor representation to state-space form, even for simple electrical circuit models obtained from Kirchoff's laws and constitutive element equations. A novel procedure to address this problem is then proposed as an extension of the classic shuffle algorithm combined with a singular value decomposition approach. In addition to an illustrative example involving a simple electrical circuit, the proposed method is employed in a case study involving the modelling of three-dimensional RLC networks with a large number of components. This work discusses the detection of small compositional changes in materials that have microstructures containing conducting and dielectric phases, which can be described by networks of resistive (R) and capacitive (C) components in a three-dimensional lattice. For this purpose, a principal component analysis (PCA) method is employed to discriminate normal samples from samples with altered composition on the basis of statistics extracted from the waveform of the network response to a given excitation. This approach obviates the requirement for multivariate regression and simplifies experimental workload for model-building, since only data from normal samples are required in the development of the PCA model. Waveform variability of the excitation source is also accounted for through the use of a nominal model derived using subspace identification. This enables standardization and software based metrology transfer across different labs. The effect of network size on the capability of detecting minute compositional changes was assessed. This brief proposes a new method for the identification of fractional-order transfer functions based on the time response resulting from a single step excitation. The proposed method is applied to the identification of a 3-D RC network, which can be tailored in terms of topology and composition to emulate real-time systems governed by fractional-order dynamics. The results are in excellent agreement with the actual network response, yet the identification procedure only requires a small number of coefficients to be determined, demonstrating that the fractional-order modeling approach leads to very parsimonious model formulations. This paper presents an approach for automatic classification of pulsed Terahertz (THz), or T-ray, signals highlighting their potential in biomedical, pharmaceutical and security applications. T-ray classification systems supply a wealth of information about test samples and make possible the discrimination of heterogeneous layers within an object. In this paper, a novel technique involving the use of Auto Regressive (AR) and Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) models on the wavelet transforms of measured T-ray pulse data is presented. Two example applications are examined — the classification of normal human bone (NHB) osteoblasts against human osteosarcoma (HOS) cells and the identification of six different powder samples. A variety of model types and orders are used to generate descriptive features for subsequent classification. Wavelet-based de-noising with soft threshold shrinkage is applied to the measured T-ray signals prior to modeling. For classification, a simple Mahalanobis distance classifier is used. Abstract: This work compares and contrasts results of classifying time-domain ECG signals with pathological conditions taken from the MIT–BIH arrhythmia database. Linear discriminant analysis and a multi-layer perceptron were used as classifiers. The neural network was trained by two different methods, namely back-propagation and a genetic algorithm. Converting the time-domain signal into the wavelet domain reduced the dimensionality of the problem at least 10-fold. This was achieved using wavelets from the db6 family as well as using adaptive wavelets generated using two different strategies. The wavelet transforms used in this study were limited to two decomposition levels. A neural network with evolved weights proved to be the best classifier with a maximum of 99.6% accuracy when optimised wavelet-transform ECG data was presented to its input and 95.9% accuracy when the signals presented to its input were decomposed using db6 wavelets. The linear discriminant analysis achieved a maximum classification accuracy of 95.7% when presented with optimised and 95.5% with db6 wavelet coefficients. It is shown that the much simpler signal representation of a few wavelet coefficients obtained through an optimised discrete wavelet transform facilitates the classification of non-stationary time-variant signals task considerably. In addition, the results indicate that wavelet optimisation may improve the classification ability of a neural network. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We discuss the modeling of dielectric responses of electromagnetically excited networks which are composed of a mixture of capacitors and resistors. Such networks can be employed as lumped-parameter circuits to model the response of composite materials containing conductive and insulating grains. The dynamics of the excited network systems are studied using a state space model derived from a randomized incidence matrix. Time and frequency domain responses from synthetic data sets generated from state space models are analyzed for the purpose of estimating the fraction of capacitors in the network. Good results were obtained by using either the time-domain response to a pulse excitation or impedance data at selected frequencies. A chemometric framework based on a Successive Projections Algorithm (SPA) enables the construction of multiple linear regression (MLR) models which can efficiently determine the ratio of conductive to insulating components in composite material samples. The proposed method avoids restrictions commonly associated with Archie?s law, the application of percolation theory or Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts models and is applicable to experimental results generated by either time domain transient spectrometers or continuous-wave instruments.
