In this article we discuss the difference between curriculum studies (as a field of inquiry) in the posthuman condition and posthuman curriculum (studies). The posthuman condition is characterised by both posthumanism and post-anthropocentrism and relates respectively, to how we now define human given humans' entanglement with new technologies, and the ethical response-ability of humans in intra-action with the more-than-human-world in a context of impending ecological disaster. In this article we shall argue that although Enlightenment humanism has been challenged philosophically/conceptually both in discourses on anti-humanism and posthumanism, humanist approaches to curriculum studies remain with us in the posthuman condition - the ghosts of Dewey, Tyler, Freire, etc., imbue much of curriculum work. However, the posthuman condition also produces posthuman thought that makes it possible to reimagine curriculum studies, that we shall call posthuman curriculum (studies). We shall review different approaches to curriculum studies in the posthuman condition, and then turn our attention to posthuman curriculum (studies). We argue that curriculum (as a vital concept) in posthumanist terms is intelligible and manifests through intra-actions, processes of becoming and experimenting. Set against sedentary states of being that mark curriculum studies in the posthuman condition; becoming, intra-acting and experimenting in posthuman curriculum (studies) are acts, doings in and of this world. The acts and doings in posthuman curriculum (studies) that are mostly written about include: improvisation, theorisation and diffraction. To these we add and specifically discuss quantum tunnelling, tracing, and desiring. Other forms of curriculum experimentation worthy of consideration in posthuman curriculum (studies) but not discussed in the article are queering, imagining, and writing. Towards the end we make the point that although some connections with the past (such as those that haunt curriculum discourses) can be threatening to life, connections of the thick now hold potential and radical openness for newness. Materials and methods: This was a randomized, single-center study conducted with 65 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Patients performed six simulated injections. Assessments of patient device acceptance and device usability were made by patient reports and independent observations of compliance with the device instruction for use (IFU) following single injections and repeated injections. In this article I initiate a debate into the (de)merits of human capital theory and human capability theory and discuss implications of the debate for higher education. Human capital theory holds that economic growth depends on investment in education and that economic growth is the basis for improving the quality of human life. Human capable theory shifts the focus away from economic growth, which it views as too crude a measure for how the quality of life of a nation is improving. Instead what people are able to do (and be) and the real opportunities available to them (their capabilities) are seen as more important.

In my review of the articles published in this issue of "SAJHE" I use the notion of "after" in two senses: "in imitation of" and "following in time" (moving beyond) (Schad 2003, x). In the first instance I wish to assess the extent to which contributors have drawn on Paulo Freire's concept of a "pedagogy of hope"--how their work imitates that of Freire. In the second instance I wish to examine the extent to which authors engage critically with Freire's work and perhaps help us in moving beyond Freire's ideas.

At the heart of the discussion in this special issue on race and affirmative action is the issue of whether race should be used as a category in admissions policies of South African universities. In my contribution I shall argue that there are no races. By race I mean the idea that skin colour (or other phenotypical features) associated with different social groups in South Africa is indicative of distinctive intellectual and moral essences. I suggest that the matter at hand is one of justice/fairness and not one of skin colour. In other words, the debate should be about the reality that certain social groups were disadvantaged during apartheid and that, as citizens, members of such social groups should be given equal life chances. I argue that in order to ensure that all citizens are given equal life chances it is necessary that contingent colour conscious should form part of public policy.

The pressure to perform has migrated from the corporate world into academe. Academics across the globe feel this pressure to perform, often expressed as "publish or perish". I reflect on the rising culture of performativity in recent decades and how it has penetrated South African universities. In doing so, I specifically look at the academic life of Ludwig Wittgenstein (regarded by Anglo-American philosophers as the greatest philosopher of the 20th century) to begin to deconstruct performativity regimes in South Africa and in particular the NRF rating system.

In their article Ogunniyi and Ogawa explore the prospects and challenges of training South African and Japanese educators to enact an indigenized science curriculum. They discuss the nature of science and the nature of indigenous knowledge (IK) and also that IK is acknowledged alongside Western science as a legitimate way of knowing in the new curricula of both countries. Ogunniyi and Ogawa argue that although indigenous knowledge is recognized in the science curricula of the two countries, successful implementation will require specific teacher training. I wish to address three areas of their work that afford an opportunity for further discussion. First, I argue that a focus on the performative side of science provides a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between Western science and indigenous knowledge. Second, I discuss the role of indigenous knowledge in a global knowledge economy, an area that Ogunniyi and Ogawa do not give much attention. Third, I elaborate on the challenges that an indigenized science curriculum has for teacher education, another area which I feel Ogunniyi and Ogawa do not do justice to.

There has been considerable debate on the nature of scholarship over the past two decades. A key contribution to this debate is a seminal work in which Boyer (1990) articulates an expanded notion of scholarship. One of the four functions of scholarship that Boyer identifies in this expanded view of scholarship is the scholarship of integration. In this article I argue that this function is too narrowly conceived; a broader view of this construct is needed to reflect the complexity of this terrain of scholarship. I argue for a multi-dimensional model of scholarship that integrates three forms of scholarship with Boyer's four functions of scholarship. I also discuss the implications this model of scholarship has for the research university. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

In this article I point out that prominence given to higher education quality assurance by contemporary states might be viewed in the context of the ascendance of neoliberalism over the past few decades and a concomitant culture of performativity. However, I argue for a shift in the angle of vision on performativity and quality assurance through a poststructural reading of these constructs. My key argument is that all constructs/concepts are territories that have the potential to become deterritorialised and reterritorrialised, and that terms such as performativity and quality assurance should not be abandoned but rather viewed as carriers of new constellations of universes. In short, perfomativity and quality assurance should not be viewed simply as negative processes, but also as sites for creative change.

Decolonisation has recently captured the attention of those who inhabit South African universities, mainly sparked by student protests of 2015 and 2016. In this article writing is used as a mode of inquiry to explore what it means to decolonise the university in a contemporary world that is confronted with crises of all kinds; political, economic, environmental, health, education, and so forth. A third world university is pitted against a first world university (the neoliberal university that accumulates) and a second world university (the university that critiques), not as a new utopian idea but as a university that scavenges on the scrap material of the first and second world universities to retool them for decolonial purposes. In doing so the article changes the angle of vision on decolonising the university in South Africa and elsewhere. The author thinks with la paperson's ideas including hir notion of scyborg, which refers to people who use their agency to retool material of the first and second world universities to garner decolonial desires. A third possibility for the university jettisons the idea of a totalizing, utopian, decolonised university. What is possible is that the university can operate like a decolonised university, without being disengaged from the first and second world universities, signifying new ways of thinking/doing research, teaching, learning and community engagement. La prévalence de la sclérodermie systémique (ScS) et de l'obésité a considérablement augmenté au cours des dernières décennies. Pour pallier au manque de données concernant les patients obèses atteints de ScS, nous avons mené une étude comparative rétrospective afin d'évaluer la prévalence, les caractéristiques cliniques et les conséquences à long terme de l'obésité chez les patients atteints de ScS. Nous avons mené une étude rétrospective cas-témoins dans le service de médecine interne de l'hôpital Cochin (Paris) de 2000 à 2019. Sur les 911 patients atteints de ScS éligibles, 90 (9,9 %) étaient obèses, dont 79 femmes et 11 hommes. Le poids médian [interquartile] des patients obèses était de 90 [82–98] kg/m2 versus 60 [53–67] kg/m2 pour les patients non obèses, correspondant à un indice de masse corporelle médian de 33 [31–37] et 23 [20–25] kg/m2, respectivement. Les patients obèses présentaient davantage de facteurs de risque cardiovasculaires, tels que l'hypertension (39 [43 %] contre 35 [19 %] ; p < 0,0001), le diabète de type 2 (10 [11 %] contre 3 [2 %] ; p < 0,01) et le syndrome d'apnée obstructive du sommeil (6 [7 %] contre 0 [0 %] ; p < 0,01). La médiane du score cutané de Rodnan modifié était significativement plus élevée chez les patients non obèses que chez les patients obèses (6 [2–16] versus 3 [2–7] ; p < 0,05). Les patients obèses présentaient également moins de calcinose (8 [9 %] contre 33 [18 %] ; p < 0,05) et une distance inter-incisive significativement plus grande (médiane [IQR], 40 [35–45] contre 38 [31–42] ; p < 0,05). La fréquence des complications systémiques de ScS ne différait pas significativement entre les patients obèses et non obèses. Nous avons observé un nombre plus faible de décès chez les patients obèses que chez les patients non obèses (6 [11 %] versus 26 décès [25 %], p = 0,06). L'analyse des courbes de survie de Kaplan-Meier à 30 ans ne montrait pas de différence significative de survie entre les patients obèses et non obèses atteints de ScS. Cette étude portant sur des patients obèses atteints de ScS révèle que, malgré une prévalence plus élevée de facteurs de risque cardiovasculaires, les patients obèses atteints de ScS présentent un mRSS plus faible, moins de calcinose et un pronostic similaire en ce qui concerne l'atteinte d'organes et la mortalité. Sense of belonging, perceived stress and wellbeing are reported factors that influence students’ university experience and learning. The COVID-19 pandemic and shift to online emergency remote teaching were likely to exacerbate these affective dimensions of student experience. This article employed a quantitative survey research design to determine how students’ sense of belonging, perceived stress and wellbeing were influenced during the pandemic. An online questionnaire was administered to 537 South African students at one residential university. Data analysis was performed using multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that platform pedagogy was a significant predictor of belonging, perceived stress, and wellbeing, while lecturers’ pedagogical competence was not. Lived learning experience of online learning was a significant predictor of perceived stress, and communication was a significant predictor of belonging. The importance of the learning environment in student belonging and wellbeing is key to student success and this study provides insights for developing targeted interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

L'arthrose est une pathologie invalidante touchant plus de 10 millions de Français. Pour la prise en charge de l'arthrose périphérique, la SFR préconise une combinaison de traitements non pharmacologiques et pharmacologiques. Cependant, 90 % des patients de l'enquête stop arthrose I & II estiment qu'ils sont mal pris en charge au niveau de la douleur [1]. Nous proposons d'évaluer un bracelet émetteur d'ondes millimétriques, un DM de neuromodulation de la douleur. Son application sur le poignet a des effets neuromodulateurs via la libération d'endorphines centrales et l'activation du système parasympathique [2]. Cette étude prospective monocentrique a été réalisée entre décembre 2020 et août 2022 au CHUGA. Soixante patients présentant une arthrose périphérique et un score EVA de douleur ≥ 4 ont été inclus et randomisés dans l'un des deux groupes en cross-over. La randomisation est stratifiée en fonction de la localisation de l'arthrose la plus douloureuse (membres sup. ou inf.). Les patients du groupe « off/on » ont suivi une période de 3 mois avec leurs traitements conventionnels (TC) puis l'utilisation du DM les 3 mois suivants. Pour le groupe « on/off » les patients ont commencé par utiliser 3 mois le DM associé à leur TC puis uniquement leur TC les trois 3 mois suivants avec une période de wash-out d'1 mois entre chaque période. Une (minimum) à 3 (maximum) séances de 40 minutes par jour avec leur DM était proposée. Le critère de jugement principal était la différence de score douleur EVA entre la période avec et sans le DM. Les autres critères d'évaluation étaient la qualité de vie (EuroQol5D-5L), des indices algofonctionnels d'arthrose (WOMAC/DREISER), un questionnaire d'anxiété–dépression (HADS), l'utilisabilité du DM, la consommation de soins, la qualité du sommeil (EVA de 0 à 10), les événements indésirables. Toutes les analyses ont été effectuées en ITT. L'âge moyen des patients était de 65,78 ± 7,2 ans. Au départ, tous les paramètres des 2 groupes étaient similaires, sauf le nombre d'homme (H) (groupe off/on : 5H ; groupe on/off : 1H) et l'IMC (groupe off/on : 24,29 ± 4,01 kg/m2 ; groupe on/off : 27,80 ± 4,7 kg/m2). Le score moyen de douleur au départ était de 6,17 ± 1,43. La différence entre les 2 périodes (+ou-DM) sur le score de douleur était statistiquement significative (p < 0,05) avec une EVA de 4,57 ± 2,0 dans la période DM et de 5,32 ± 1,77 dans la période TC (taille d'effet du DM à 0,42). L'étude montre une réduction plus importante de la douleur à la fin de la période DM (−1,1 point au cours du dernier mois). Ceci confirme l'existence d'un délai de réponse et la nécessité d'un nombre suffisant de séances pour avoir un bénéfice. Les hommes ont 18 fois plus de « chance » d'être répondeurs que les femmes. L'augmentation d'un point d'IMC multiplie par 1,2 la chance d'être répondeur. Il existe une différence significative en termes de qualité de vie et du sommeil. L'usage de ce DM ne rencontre pas de frein majeur. Aucune différence significative n'a pu être observée en termes d'anxiété, d'impact fonctionnel ou de consommation de soin. Aucun effet indésirable grave n'est à déclarer. Nous avons démontré l'intérêt d'un bracelet émetteur d'ondes millimétriques dans la prise en charge de la douleur de l'arthrose périphérique, notamment en s'adressant à sa composante nociplastique. Il a été également observé l'existence probable de profils de patients répondeurs (homme et à plus fort IMC). L'absence de placebo est une limite de cette étude. L'utilisation de ce bracelet pourrait s'inscrire prochainement dans la stratégie globale de la prise en charge de l'arthrose périphérique. Since the “#RhodesMustFall” and “#FeesMustFall” student protests of 2015 and 2016 there has been much written about decolonisation in South Africa, particularly in relation to the curriculum. However, not much has been written about individual responsibility in the process of decolonisation, which Fanon (1967) argued is a necessary condition for decolonisation. In this article I argue that the autobiographical method, currere is one form of decolonisation. I use currere to document my own journey of decolonisation. I conclude that taking individual responsibility in decolonising the university curriculum involves a lifelong affair of unlearning and relearning from which no one is exempt because even those leading the decolonial project take in coloniality on a daily basis. Such a lifelong affair will involve multiple cycles of currere’s four steps so that currere, as a form of decolonisation, becomes a spiral of multiple cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has radically changed our world. All spheres of social life have been affected by the pandemic. Lockdown and other restriction measures have grinded contact tuition to a hold and we are seeing universities pivot to online learning/teaching. Although authentic online teaching/learning may not be realised in this moment of crisis, online teaching/learning is likely to be expanded post-COVID-19. In this article, I explore the possibility that the COVID-19 pandemic could accelerate the uberfication of the university. The concept of "uberfication of the university" was first mooted by Gary Hall (2016). I argue that although uberfication of the university (or its acceleration) is not preordained, the potential for its actualisation is already embedded in our present social, educational and technological situation. Although the possibility exists that the present situation can also be a carrier of alternatives to uberfication, vectors of escape from the latter will depend on the active construction of counter narratives to uberfication. A recently published article on the cognitive functioning of coloured women, authored by five Stellenbosch University academics received much criticism from those in the academy and those outside. The public outcry focused mainly on racial essentialism evident in the article. But, there were also other criticisms, which focused on the scientific merit of the article, the peer-review process and ethical regulation at Stellenbosch University. In this article, I revisit some of the criticisms levelled against the research reported in the article, which was published in the journal Aging, Neuropsychology and Cognition, and argue that criticisms raised in the wake of the publication should be contextualised within broader debates. I aver that our response to racism in science should not concern merely exorcising racism from science content but that modern western science needs to be decolonised. Furthermore, an analysis of peer-review and ethical regulation in the Nieuwoudt et al. (2019) case should not focus simply on whether reviewers did their work or not, but that the dominant systems of peer-review and ethics creep in the neoliberal university should come under scrutiny. La réforme du 3e cycle des études médicales (R3C) de 2017 a réorganisé l'internat en trois phases successives : socle, approfondissement et consolidation. Celles-ci correspondent à l'évolution des besoins de formation en parallèle de l'acquisition d'expérience. La phase de consolidation introduit le concept d'autonomie supervisée pour les étudiants de 3e cycle avec la création d'un nouveau statut de Docteur Junior (DJ). Cette dernière phase consiste en deux stages de 6 mois dans un service de médecine interne agréé. Les deux stages peuvent se faire dans un même service. Le choix des stages est fait lors d'une procédure d'appariement selon les souhaits des internes et des chefs de service. L'objectif de ce travail était d'interroger la première promotion de DJ de médecine interne et immunologie clinique (MIIC) concernant le déroulement et la mise en place de la phase de consolidation. Les DJ du DES de MIIC étaient invités à répondre à une enquête en ligne anonyme. Il n'existe pas de liste exhaustive des DJ concernés au plan national. Les répondants ont été sollicités par mail et via les réseaux sociaux de l'Amicale des Jeunes Internistes (AJI). Le questionnaire était composé de dix sous-parties : renseignements démographiques, maquette passée, processus d'affectation des stages, format de l'année, activité durant le semestre (mise en autonomie, affectations dans les unités), temps de travail, astreintes et gardes, formation personnelle et académique, projet post-internat. Au total, le questionnaire a recueilli 36 réponses, dont 23 pour le premier semestre, 12 pour le deuxième et 1 pour les deux. La majorité des villes était représentée. La procédure d'appariement n'avait pas été respectée dans 81,6 % des cas avec arrangement préalable mais 81,6 % des DJ se déclaraient satisfaits de leur affection. Au cours de l'année, 68,2 % des DJ changeaient de service. L'activité principale des DJ étaient l'hospitalisation conventionnelle pour laquelle la majorité des DJ y consacraient plus de 70 % de leur temps de travail. L'hospitalisation programmée (hôpital de semaine, hôpital de jour) représentait moins de 20 % du temps de travail pour 52,8 % des répondants. La grande majorité des DJ avait une activité de consultation dans des proportions variables. Parmi les répondants, 47,2 % ne s'occupaient pas des avis. Près de deux-tiers des DJ se déclaraient satisfaits de leur activité, de leur supervision et de leur autonomisation. Au total, 53,8 % auraient souhaité faire plus de consultations et 57,7 % plus d'avis. Le temps de travail hebdomadaire n'était pas respecté pour 55,6 % des DJ. Parmi eux, le temps de formation académique (présentiel en cours, congrès, DU) n'était pas respecté pour 78 % et le temps de formation personnelle n'était pas respecté pour 72 % des répondants. Au total, 88,6 % des DJ estimaient que la transition avec le post-internat serait plus aisée grâce à la phase de consolidation mais 27,8 % d'entre eux rapportaient que l'année de DJ confirmait leur appréhension à exercer en tant qu'interniste et 11,1 % que celle-ci pouvait remettre en question leur exercice futur. Cette enquête est un premier état des lieux concernant la mise en place de la phase de consolidation dans le DES de MIIC. Les points positifs rapportés par les DJ sont leur affectation, l'autonomisation progressive et la transition plus aisée vers le post-internat. Les points négatifs concernent l'absence de vraie procédure d'appariement et le non-respect des temps de travail et de formation pour une majorité d'entre eux. La limite principale de cette enquête est un possible biais de sélection lié au moyen de contact des DJ en l'absence de liste exhaustive. Un travail collectif autour de cette dernière année d'internat semble être indispensable pour garantir l'épanouissement personnel et professionnel des jeunes internistes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The (post)human turn has ushered in new ways of doing inquiry. (Post)humanism is the catalyst for news ways of thinking and doing research under an umbrella term called (post)qualitative research. In this article I discuss the contextual and philosophical dimensions that gave rise to (post)qualitative research. I outline some emerging characteristics of (post)qualitative research and discuss its relevance to South Africa. I suggest that (post)qualitative research informed by both (post)human theories and indigenous philosophies could open up new ways of doing research in the country, including research with water and land. I do not provide a set of answers in the article, but open up alternative ways of thinking and doing inquiry in the Anthropocene and in a context of ongoing decolonial conversations. In this article I review the emergence of transdisciplinary research and in particular the integrative approach to this category of research. I examine the potential of the integrative approach to achieve cognitive justice -whether it decentres Western science and gives equitable treatment to other ways of knowing such as indigenous knowledge. I aver that transformations that have occurred within discourses on transdisciplinary research have not changed the Western cultural archive itself and that Western science continues to dominate other ways of knowing in the integrative approach in transdisciplinary research. I draw on insights from Deleuze and Guattari to open up ways of reimagining transdisciplinary research as a decolonising process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nous rapportons le cas d'une jeune femme de 18 ans ayant présenté une panniculite glutéale associée à un syndrome inflammatoire biologique prolongé conduisant à la découverte d'une vascularite à ANCA MPO+ avec atteinte rénale. Une jeune femme de 18 ans sans antécédent ni traitement au long cours hormis une contraception oestro-progestative consultait en médecine interne pour une tuméfaction douloureuse de la fesse gauche associée à un syndrome inflammatoire biologique. À l'interrogatoire, elle rapportait l'apparition sur un mois d'une tuméfaction douloureuse en regard du haut de la fesse gauche, d'allure initialement ecchymotique puis prenant progressivement un aspect plus inflammatoire et rétractile. Elle présentait une altération de l'état général avec de la fièvre à 38,5 °C, des nausées et vomissements, une perte de 3 kg et une asthénie marquée. Elle décrivait également des douleurs lombaires et des deux membres inférieurs, parfois nocturnes, ainsi que des douleurs thoraciques sous-mammaires augmentées à l'inspiration. L'échographie de la région glutéale montrait un « lymphœdème inflammatoire de la graisse ». Il n'y avait pas d'anomalie du scanner thoracique ni de l'échographie abdomino-pelvienne. Le bilan biologique montrait un syndrome inflammatoire biologique avec une CRP stable autour de 90 mg/L sans hyperleucocytose, avec une anémie inflammatoire et une lymphopénie modérées. Cliniquement l'aspect était celui d'une panniculite non spécifique. La biologie faite en urgence à la consultation montrait une insuffisance rénale avec une créatininémie à 150 μmol/L contre 54 μmol/L un mois plus tôt, associée à une protéinurie glomérulaire à 2 g/g et à une hématurie microscopique. Des p-ANCA avec anticorps anti-MPO à 51,6 UI/mL étaient retrouvés. Le PET-scanner obtenu rapidement (dans l'hypothèse d'un lymphome T) montrait un unique rehaussement métabolique glutéal. La ponction biopsie rénale confirmait la glomérulonéphrite extra-capillaire pauci-immune, les lésions concernaient 80 % des glomérules et étaient majoritairement actives. La patiente était traitée par bolus de corticoïdes et rituximab. L'évolution était favorable à 6 mois avec normalisation de la fonction rénale mais persistance d'une protéinurie à 1,5 g/g. Les panniculites sont des hypodermites (inflammations de la graisse sous-cutanée) qui relèvent de multiples étiologies potentielles (infections, pathologie pancréatique, lymphome T, lupus, PAN, MICI entre autres). Elles imposent, en dehors des érythèmes noueux typiques, une biopsie profonde pour aboutir au diagnostic étiologique, en fonction de la localisation de l'atteinte du lobule graisseux, septale ou lobulaire et associée ou non à une atteinte vasculaire. Les panniculites sont classiques dans la PAN mais exceptionnellement citées comme une manifestation cutanée des vascularites à ANCA. Il existe cependant quelques cas publiés rapportant cette atteinte comme un symptôme précédant une glomérulonéphrite ou une hémorragie alvéolaire associée aux anticorps anti-MPO (MPA) chez de jeunes femmes [1,2] ou enfants [3]. Chez cette patiente, la biopsie cutanée n'a pas été réalisée, l'atteinte rénale concomitante imposant une biopsie urgente, suivie d'un prompt traitement de la vascularite selon les recommandations en vigueur. Dans les cas publiés, l'histologie montre une panniculite septale et lobulaire et parfois des images de vascularite des petits vaisseaux. Une panniculite peut être le symptôme initial d'une micropolyangéite. Cette présentation parait concerner assez spécifiquement, si l'on en croit les cas publiés, des enfants ou des jeunes femmes. The student protests of 2015 precipitated a renewed interest in the decolonisation of the university in South Africa, and by association the decolonisation of the university curriculum. The decolonisation of the curriculum is an important conversation, and long overdue, given that the Western model of academic organisation on which the South African university is based, remains largely unchallenged. In this article I add to the conversation by discussing what decolonisation entails, why the need for decolonisation, the importance of rethinking how curriculum is conceived, and outlining some possible ways of decolonising the university curriculum. Après l'enquête nationale arthrose 2013 de l'AFLAR (association française de lutte anti-rhumatismale), les organisateurs ont souhaité avec l'aide de leurs collègues belges réévaluer l'état de santé et le ressenti des patients arthrosiques grâce à l'enquête « Stop-Arthrose ». Ce travail rapporte les effets de la pandémie Covid-19 sur les symptômes et l'état de santé déclarés des patients arthrosiques. L'enquête menée en ligne via le site internet www.stop-arthrose.org s'est déroulée de septembre 2019 à janvier 2021 (17 mois). Au total, 3465 personnes y ont participé (France n = 2822, Belgique n = 643). Le questionnaire était composé de 230 items : données sociodémographiques ; diagnostic de la maladie et articulations atteintes ; impact sur le sommeil, les loisirs, les activités quotidiennes ; traitements et médications, activité physique ; scores EVA de l'état de santé, de douleur et d'inconfort (< 48 h et < 2 semaines) ; opinions sur l'arthrose et attentes. Les réponses aux questionnaires obtenues avant le 30 mars 2020, entre le 1er avril et 30 juin 2020, et après le 1er juillet 2020 ont été comparées. Les participants, 80 % de femmes, étaient âgés de 59,7 ± 11,8 ans et en surpoids (IMC 26,8 ± 5,2 kg/m2). Plus de 60 % avaient un niveau d'éducation supérieur, 50 % étaient retraités et 40 % toujours actifs, 60 % vivaient en milieu urbain et 70 % en famille et 31 % avaient un revenu > 3000€. La durée médiane des douleurs était de 13 ans et celle depuis le diagnostic d'arthrose 10 ans. Les articulations les plus affectées étaient : genoux (50 %), pouces (30 %), hanches et autres doigts (25 %), pieds (20 %). Sur une échelle EVA (0–10 = excellent), l'inconfort était évalué 5,7 ± 2,3, l'état de santé, 5,8 ± 1,9, la douleur 5,8 ± 2,2 et le moral 4,9 ± 2,5. La comparaison des périodes avant Covid-19 (n = 1943) et Covid-19 (n = 1542) n'a pas mis en évidence de différences significatives ni du statut algo-fonctionnel, ni de l'état de santé général déclaré des patients, sauf pendant le premier confinement (avril-juin 2020). Les sujets recrutés durant cette période déclaraient des scores douleur, inconfort articulaire, état de santé général et moral plus élevés. L'enquête montre que la pandémie COVID-19 n'a pas globalement modifié le statut algo-fonctionnel et l'état général de santé des patients arthrosique sauf pendant les trois mois du premier confinement. Cette dégradation transitoire du statut algo-fonctionnel, de la santé et du moral des patients peut s'expliquer par le changement important de style de vie durant cette période. Even though the term 'curriculum' has its origin in higher education it is a neglected term in discourses on higher education. In the field of Curriculum Studies it is the school rather than the university curriculum that is mainly studied. This may be due to the relative autonomy that higher education institutions (HEIs) enjoy and the academic freedom granted its members. The downside of institutional autonomy and academic freedom in the South African context is that the Africanisation/decolonisation of curricula has been left unaddressed by some universities. Twenty years into South Africa's democracy it is an opportune time to again ask the key curriculum question: What knowledge is of most worth? What knowledge is of most worth to South African university students located on the African continent and who form part of a global society? In this article, the author shall discuss the Africanisation of the university curriculum by drawing on insights from: the sociology of knowledge; indigenous knowledge; a different reading of the knowledge economy (different to the neoliberal reading). Knowledge production in the twenty-first century is changing rapidly as both universities and societies transform in a world that is increasingly interconnected in so many different ways. Challenges associated with these transformations include: globalisation; the compression of time and space; the ascendancy of neoliberalism; a pendulum swing from basic to applied research; the emergence of transdisciplinary research; the internationalisation of indigenous knowledges; and complex societal issues (e.g., environmental destruction, poverty, unemployment, disease). This special issue of the South African Journal of Higher Education (SAJHE) focuses on how knowledge production has occurred in transnational and local spaces in view of these challenges. In this article I initiate a debate into the (de)merits of human capital theory and human capability theory and discuss implications of the debate for higher education. Human capital theory holds that economic growth depends on investment in education and that economic growth is the basis for improving the quality of human life. Human capable theory shifts the focus away from economic growth, which it views as too crude a measure for how the quality of life of a nation is improving. Instead what people are able to do (and be) and the real opportunities available to them (their capabilities) are seen as more important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In my review of the articles published in this issue of SAJHE I use the notion of 'after' in two senses: 'in imitation of' and 'following in time' (moving beyond) (Schad 2003, x). In the first instance I wish to assess the extent to which contributors have drawn on Paulo Freire's concept of a 'pedagogy of hope' -- how their work imitates that of Freire. In the second instance I wish to examine the extent to which authors engage critically with Freire's work and perhaps help us in moving beyond Freire's ideas. It is imperative that we maintain hope even when the harshness of reality may suggest the opposite (Freire in hooks 2003). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article I survey educational research conducted in South Africa based on articles published in the South African Journal of Education (SAJHE) over the past five years. The themes that feature prominently in SAJHE over the past five years are: Africanisation and indigenous knowledge, assessment, e-learning, quality and quality assurance, and student and staff diversity. I suggest that these themes reflect challenges facing South African higher education associated with two sets of pressures: the demands of a competitive and interconnected global economy and the need to democratize higher education in SA given inequalities of the past. I also survey the approaches to educational research that is reported in SAJHE - in other words, how the research studies are framed methodologically. The findings show that 58 per cent of the research reported in SAJHE over the past five years comprises theoretical research and 42 per cent empirical research. I contend that this trend might be ascribed to the nature of the five themes which feature most prominently in the journal over the past five years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pressure to perform has migrated from the corporate world into academe. Academics across the globe feel this pressure to perform, often expressed as 'publish or perish'. I reflect on the rising culture of performativity in recent decades and how it has penetrated South African universities. In doing so, I specifically look at the academic life of Ludwig Wittgenstein (regarded by Anglo-American philosophers as the greatest philosopher of the 20th century) to begin to deconstruct performativity regimes in South Africa and in particular the NRF rating system.
