Computing dynamical properties of strongly interacting quantum many-body systems poses a major challenge to theoretical approaches. Usually, one has to resort to numerical analytic continuation of results on imaginary frequencies, which is a mathematically ill-defined procedure. Here, we present an efficient method to compute the spectral functions of the two-component Fermi gas near the strongly interacting unitary limit directly in real frequencies. To this end, we combine the Keldysh path integral that is defined in real time with the self-consistent T-matrix approximation. The latter is known to predict thermodynamic and transport properties in good agreement with experimental observations in ultracold atoms. We validate our method by comparison with thermodynamic quantities obtained from imaginary time calculations and by transforming our real-time propagators to imaginary time. By comparison with state-of-the-art numerical analytic continuation of the imaginary time results, we show that our real-time results give qualitative improvements for dynamical quantities. Moreover, we show that no significant pseudogap regime exists in the self-consistent T-matrix approximation above the critical temperature $T_c$, an issue that has been under significant debate. Metallic quantum criticality is frequently discussed as a source for non-Fermi liquid behavior, but controlled theoretical treatments are scarce. Here we identify and study a novel magnetic quantum critical point in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet coupled to a three-dimensional environment of conduction electrons. Using sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations and an effective field-theory analysis, we demonstrate that the quantum critical point is characterized by marginal Fermi liquid behavior. In particular, we compute the electrical resistivity for transport across the magnetic layer, which is shown to display a linear temperature dependence at criticality. We consider a two-dimensional quantum spin system described by a Heisenberg model that is embedded in a three-dimensional metal. The two systems couple via an antiferromagnetic Kondo interaction. In such a setup, the ground state generically remains metallic down to the lowest temperatures and allows us to study magnetic quantum phase transitions in metallic environments. From the symmetry point of view, translation symmetry is present in two out of three lattice directions such that crystal momentum is only partially conserved. Importantly, the construction provides a route to study, with negative-sign-free auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo methods, the physics of local moments in metallic environments. Our large-scale numerical simulations show that as a function of the Kondo coupling, the system has two metallic phases. In the limit of strong Kondo coupling, a paramagnetic heavy-fermion phase emerges. Here, the spin degree of freedom is screened by means of the formation of a composite quasiparticle that participates in the Luttinger count. At weak Kondo coupling, magnetic order is present. This phase is characterized by Landau-damped Goldstone modes. The instability of a Fermi surface against Ising nematic order destroys the quasiparticle character of the low-energy degrees of freedom. Therefore, observables exhibit deviations from Fermi liquid behavior which gives rise to the term Ising nematic quantum critical metal. To obtain a theoretical description we use a finite-temperature version of Eliashberg theory which allows to treat the strong coupling between quantum and thermal fluctuations in the absence of well-defined quasiparticles. Here, we use this self-consistent, diagrammatic approach to compute, in particular, the nematic susceptibility and the non-Fermi liquid correlations. Upon decreasing the temperature, the susceptibility crosses over from a $(T \log T)^{-1}$ to $T^{-2/3}$ behavior, which is induced by the absence of quasiparticles and restores the Ising nematic critical scaling. Correspondingly, the fermions obey a simple $\omega/T$ scaling law at low enough temperatures. However, this regime is characterized by strong IR-UV mixing since the proportionality factors exhibit a dependence on the spectral width of the non-quasiparticle excitations and on the underlying lattice. Tuning the parameters of the model, therefore, gives rise to several scenarios for the breakdown of the scaling theory. We discuss them within the Eliashberg approach and estimate the related crossover scales. We also show that the leading order vertex corrections do not change the scaling with temperature or coupling constants.

Strongly correlated systems are often associated with an underlying quantum critical point which governs their behavior in the finite temperature phase diagram. Their thermodynamical and transport properties arise from critical fluctuations and follow universal scaling laws. Here, we develop a microscopic theory of thermal transport in the quantum critical regime expressed in terms of a thermal sum rule and an effective scattering time. We explicitly compute the characteristic scaling functions in a quantum critical model system, the unitary Fermi gas. Moreover, we derive an exact thermal sum rule for heat and energy currents and evaluate it numerically using the nonperturbative Luttinger-Ward approach. For the thermal scattering times we find a simple quantum critical scaling form. Together, the sum rule and the scattering time determine the heat conductivity, thermal diffusivity, Prandtl number and sound diffusivity from high temperatures down into the quantum critical regime. We present an efficient and very flexible numerical fast Fourier-Laplace transform, that extends the logarithmic Fourier transform (LFT) introduced by Haines and Jones [Geophys. J. Int. 92(1):171 (1988)] for functions varying over many scales to nonintegrable functions. In particular, these include cases of the asymptotic form $f(\nu\to0)\sim\nu^a$ and $f(|\nu|\to\infty)\sim\nu^b$ with arbitrary real $a>b$. Furthermore, we prove that the numerical transform converges exponentially fast in the number of data points, provided that the function is analytic in a cone $|\Im{\nu}|<\theta|\Re{\nu}|$ with a finite opening angle $\theta$ around the real axis and satisfies $|f(\nu)f(1/\nu)|<\nu^c$ as $\nu\to 0$ with a positive constant $c$, which is the case for the class of functions with power-law tails. Based on these properties we derive ideal transformation parameters and discuss how the logarithmic Fourier transform can be applied to convolutions. The ability of the logarithmic Fourier transform to perform these operations on multiscale (non-integrable) functions with power-law tails with exponentially small errors makes it the method of choice for many physical applications, which we demonstrate on typical examples. The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a purely quantum-mechanical quantity whose determination for large quantum many-body systems requires an exceptionally precise knowledge of all eigenstates and eigenenergies. One might therefore be tempted to dismiss the applicability of any approximations to the underlying time evolution as hopeless. However, using the fully connected transverse-field Ising model (FC-TFIM) as an example, we show that this indeed is not the case, and that a simple semiclassical approximation to systems well described by mean-field theory (MFT) is in fact in good quantitative agreement with the exact quantum-mechanical calculation. Beyond the potential to capture the entire dynamical phase diagram of these models, the method presented here also allows for an intuitive geometric interpretation of the fidelity return rate at any temperature, thereby connecting the order parameter dynamics and the Loschmidt echo in a common framework. We discuss the phase diagram and the universal scaling functions of attractive Fermi gases at finite imbalance. The existence of a quantum multicritical point for the unitary gas at vanishing chemical potential $\mu$ and effective magnetic field $h$, first discussed by Nikoli\'{c} and Sachdev, gives rise to three different phase diagrams, depending on whether the inverse scattering length $1/a$ is negative, positive or zero. Within a Luttinger-Ward formalism, the phase diagram and pressure of the unitary gas is calculated as a function of the dimensionless scaling variables $T/\mu$ and $h/\mu$. We construct the finite-temperature dynamical phase diagram of the fully connected transverse-field Ising model from the vantage point of two disparate concepts of dynamical criticality. An analytical derivation of the classical dynamics and exact diagonalization simulations are used to study the dynamics after a quantum quench in the system prepared in a thermal equilibrium state. The different dynamical phases characterized by the type of non-analyticities that emerge in an appropriately defined Loschmidt-echo return rate directly correspond to the dynamical phases determined by the spontaneous breaking of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry in the long-time steady state. The dynamical phase diagram is qualitatively different depending on whether the initial thermal state is ferromagnetic or paramagnetic.
