European Union legislation obliges natural gas transmission system operators to publish key transport indicators on a transparency platform operated by the European Network of Gas Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG). Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) maintains similar transparency initiatives, providing data on the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals as well as underground gas storage facilities. These platforms have become a useful source of information for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers that is available to the general public at no cost. We demonstrate that these data platforms essentially represent an archive of the European natural gas system and how the security of supply situation of Europe can be monitored in almost real time by analyzing the evolution of flow patterns on a daily basis as well as longer time horizons. In particular, we show how the system has reacted to infrastructure expansions, disruptions, and an evolving geopolitical context.

Several technological challenges delay the adoption of electrified powertrains in the heavy-duty transport sector. For fuel-cell hybrid electric trucks, key issues include slow cold start, reduced cooling power during high ambient temperatures, and uncertainties regarding durability. In addition, the engineers must handle the complexity of the system. In this article, a Matlab/Simulink library is introduced, which has been developed to aid engineers in the design and optimization of energy management systems and strategies of this complex system that consider mechanical, electrochemical, and thermal energy flows. The library is introduced through five example vehicle models, and through case studies that highlight the various kinds of analysis that can be performed using the provided models. All library code is open source, open for commercial use, and runs in Matlab/Simulink without any need for external libraries.

The rapid increase in electric vehicles (EVs) and installed photovoltaic systems (PV) has resulted in new challenges for electric systems, e.g., voltage variations in low-voltage grids. Grid owners cannot directly control the power consumption of the end consumers. However, by the design of transparent tariffs, economic incentives are introduced for the end consumers to adjust their EV charging patterns. In this work, the main objective is to design a time-of-use pricing tariff to reduce the voltage variations in a low-voltage grid when introducing PVs and EVs with smart charging. Data from an existing low-voltage grid and hourly data from household power consumption, together with models of PV and EV charging, are used to simulate the voltage fluctuations based on the modified electric consumption. The results show that a time-of-use pricing tariff taking into consideration maximum peak power is important to reduce grid voltage variations. Another observation is that the use of economic incentives, such as subsidies when selling power from the household, combined with V2G technology can be economical for households but increases the voltage variations in the grid.

Individual differences (IDs) have long been considered one of the most important factors explaining variable rates and outcomes in second language acquisition (Dewaele, 2013). While traditional operationalizations of IDs have, explicitly or implicitly, assumed that IDs are static traits that are stable through time, more recent research inspired by complex dynamic systems theory (Larsen-Freeman, 1997, 2020) demonstrates that many IDs are dynamic and variable through time and across contexts, a theme echoed throughout the current issue. This study reports the initial semester of a diachronic project investigating the dynamicity of four learner IDs: motivation, personality, learning and cognitive styles, and working memory. In the initial semester, data from 323 participants in their first year of university-level Spanish were collected and analyzed to determine what type of variability may be present across learners with respect to the four IDs studied at one time point and to discern possible learner profiles in the data or patterns via which the data may be otherwise meaningfully described. The results revealed four types of learner profiles present in the dataset.

A straightforward technique to explore the "total effects" of neighborhoods on health outcomes is to compare the degree of similarity of outcomes of neighbors with those of non-neighbors. Several issues arise in interpreting these estimates around spatial and temporal definitions of "neighbors" and life course mobility patterns. Indeed, much work uses "cross- sectional neighbors," which makes the interpretation of the estimates unclear because they combine short-term effects (for movers) and long-term effects (for stayers). This paper contributes to the literature by assessing the importance of measuring neighbor mobility as well as neighborhood selection. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we examine the extent to which having longitudinal measures of "neighbors" shapes estimates of neighborhood effects, and also use a negative test of neighborhood effects to assess the importance of neighborhood selection. Specifically, we estimate similarity in self-rated health of adults over 30 years old who live in the same county over various periods of time and find that "cross-sectional" neighbor definitions may understate neighborhood effect estimates by as much as 35%. However, when we contrast these health estimates with contemporaneous neighborhood "effects" on completed education, we find that much of the "understated" effects on health are likely related to selection effects rather than causal effects of neighborhoods.

The increasing complexity and size of cyber-physical systems (e.g., aircraft, manufacturing processes, and power generation plants) is making it hard to develop centralized diagnosers that are reliable and efficient. In addition, advances in networking technology, along with the availability of inexpensive sensors and processors, are causing a shift in focus from centralized to more distributed diagnosers. This paper develops two structural approaches for distributed fault detection and isolation. The first method uses redundant equation sets for residual generation, referred to as minimal structurally-over-determined sets, and the second is based on the original model equations. We compare the diagnosis performance of the two algorithms and clarify the pros and cons of each method. A case study is used to demonstrate the two methods, and the results are discussed together with directions for future work.

Abstract The classical-dS scenario in the type II string theories proposes to search for dS vacua of orientifold flux compactifications in a regime where string corrections to the compactified effective field theory are negligible. We study a minimal extension of this scenario in which the leading string corrections to the O-plane/D-brane actions at the 4-derivative order are included but higher orders as well as string corrections in the bulk are self-consistently neglected. Our proposal is motivated by a recent debate about dS solutions with O8-planes which circumvent a classical no-go theorem due to unusual sources leading to so-called permissive boundary conditions for the 10D supergravity fields. We argue that such sources do not arise in classical supergravity but ask whether including the 4-derivative corrections leads to sources that have a similar effect. However, we find that the 4-derivative corrections do not allow meta-stable dS in a class of models with O8-planes and/or D8-branes we consider. We also study related models which in addition contain O6-planes/D6-branes and find that again no meta-stable dS is allowed, both classically and including the 4-derivative corrections. While some of the arguments in this work require the backreaction of the O-plane/D-brane sources to be small, others are valid including the full backreaction.

Abstract The DGKT-CFI construction of AdS flux vacua in type IIA string theory has interesting features such as classical moduli stabilization and a parametric scale separation between the Hubble scale and the Kaluza-Klein scale. A possible worry regarding the consistency of these vacua is that pathologies could arise due to intersections of the O6-planes, which are not well understood in the 10D solution. In this note, we show in explicit examples that such intersections are absent if one compactifies on smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds instead of toroidal orbifolds. In particular, we show that the blow-up of the T 6 /ℤ3 orbifold yields a single O6-plane which wraps a smooth submanifold without any (self-)intersections. On the other hand, blowing up the T 6 / ℤ 3 2 $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_3^2 $$ orbifold seems to yield an O6-plane which self-intersects. However, we show that this is due to an inconsistent orientifold involution in the original DGKT model. Imposing a consistent involution again yields a single smooth O6-plane without self-intersections on the blown-up manifold.

Abstract It has been proposed that flux compactifications of supercritical string theories (i.e., with spacetime dimension D > 10) have dS vacua, with large D acting as a control parameter for corrections to the classical spacetime effective action. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the self-consistency of such models, focussing on α ′ and backreaction corrections. We first show that all supercritical AdS, Minkowski and dS vacua in this setting have ≳ O 1 $$ \gtrsim \mathcal{O}(1) $$ curvature and/or field strengths in the string frame. This may be in tension with suppressing α ′ corrections unless the coefficients of the higher-derivative terms have a sufficiently strong large-D suppression. We then argue that an additional and more severe problem arises in the dS case due to the backreaction of O-planes. In particular, we argue using a combination of geometric bounds and string-theory constraints that the O-plane backreaction is large in supercritical dS models. This implies that a large part of the naive classical geometry is eaten up by singular holes and thus indicates a breakdown of the classical description. Our finding resonates with several other recent results suggesting that string theory does not admit dS vacua in regimes where string and backreaction corrections are under control. As byproducts of our analysis, we derive a number of technical results that are useful beyond the specific applications in this paper. In particular, we compute the leading backreaction corrections to the smeared solution in a general flux compactification from D to d dimensions for an arbitrary distribution of O-planes and D-branes. We further argue for a general estimate for Green’s functions on compact manifolds (and therefore for the backreaction corrections) in terms of their diameter, volume and dimension.

Abstract We elaborate on recent results regarding the self-consistency of de Sitter vacua in the LARGE-volume scenario of type IIB string theory. In particular, we analyze to what extent the control over warping, curvature and g s corrections depends on the topology and the orientifold/brane data of a compactification. We compute a general bound on the magnitude of these corrections which strongly constrains the D3 tadpole. The minimally required tadpole ranges from O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (500) to O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (106) or more and depends strongly on other data, in particular on the Euler number of the Calabi-Yau 3-fold, the triple-self-intersection and Euler numbers of the small divisor and the coefficient a s appearing in the non-perturbative superpotential. We give arguments suggesting that satisfying these constraints is very challenging and perhaps impossible.

We argue that dS vacua in the LARGE-volume scenario of type IIB string theory are vulnerable to various unsuppressed curvature, warping and gs corrections. We work out in general how these corrections affect the moduli vevs, the vacuum energy and the moduli masses in the 4D EFT for the two Kähler moduli, the conifold modulus and a nilpotent superfield describing the anti-brane uplift. Our analysis reveals that the corrections are parametrically larger in the relevant expressions than one might have guessed from their suppression in the off-shell potential. Some corrections appear without any parametric suppression at all, which makes them particularly dangerous for candidate dS vacua. Other types of corrections can in principle be made small for appropriate parameter choices. However, we show in an explicit model that this is never possible for all corrections at the same time when the vacuum energy is positive. Some of the corrections we consider are also relevant for the stability of non-supersymmetric AdS vacua.

Com a forte evolução tecnológica, a Cartografia apresentou significativas mudanças tanto em nível de aquisição, como em nível de produção e disponibilização de dados. Muitas destas mudanças justificam a investigação de soluções metodológicas para a recuperação de mapas antigos. É o caso das informações referentes às áreas de patrimônio da União, definidas de forma legal através de instruções normativas, que representam documentos oficiais. O município do Rio de Janeiro, foco deste estudo, é considerado um exemplo de complexidade máxima em termos desta cartografia, apresentando características únicas. O objetivo deste trabalho está associado à proposição de soluções que visem o resgate de uma cartografia cadastral antiga, com status de documento legal, que precisa ser recuperada para atender às funcionalidades da gestão do patrimônio da União. A pesquisa propõe ainda, uma tipologia relacionada às condições originais das folhas, de modo a orientar o método de georreferenciamento a ser adotado e contribuir para a compreensão da qualidade destes produtos. Os resultados encontrados mostram que as folhas com referências cartográficas e grade de coordenadas mantiveram acurácia equivalente às suas escalas originais. As folhas sem essas informações passaram a ter exatidões compatíveis com o especificado para escalas menores, chegando até a escala 1:5.000.

Abstract We study supersymmetric AdS7 vacua of massive type IIA string theory, which were argued to describe the near-horizon limit of NS5/D6/D8-brane intersections and to be holographically dual to 6D (1,0) theories. We show, for the case without D8-brane charges, that such vacua do not admit any supersymmetry-breaking deformations. Our result implies that the dual (1, 0) theories do not have a conformal manifold, thus extending previously known results for supersymmetric deformations. It is also in line with the recent conjecture that non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are in the swampland.

It was recently proposed that type IIA string theory may allow classical de Sitter solutions with O8-planes as the only localized sources. We show that such solutions are incompatible with the integrated supergravity equations of motion, analogously to the no-go theorem due to Maldacena and Nuñez. We also discuss in detail divergences and discontinuities at the O8-plane positions and argue that they do not invalidate such an argument. We furthermore show that a recently proposed class of non-supersymmetric AdS solutions with O8-planes is in contrast with our results as well.

Abstract We search for effective axions with super-Planckian decay constants in type IIB string models. We argue that such axions can be realised as long winding trajectories in complex-structure moduli space by an appropriate flux choice. Our main findings are: the simplest models with aligned winding in a 2-axion field space fail due to a general no-go theorem. However, equally simple models with misaligned winding, where the effective axion is not close to any of the fundamental axions, appear to work to the best of our present understanding. These models have large decay constants but no large monotonic regions in the potential, making them unsuitable for large-field inflation. We also show that our no-go theorem can be avoided by aligning three or more axions. We argue that, contrary to misaligned models, such models can have both large decay constants and large monotonic regions in the potential. Our results may be used to argue against the refined Swampland Distance Conjecture and strong forms of the axionic Weak Gravity Conjecture. It becomes apparent, however, that realising inflation is by far harder than just producing a light field with large periodicity.

Abstract It was recently argued that the swampland distance conjecture rules out dS vacua at parametrically large field distances. We point out that this conclusion can in principle be avoided in the presence of large fluxes that are not bounded by a tadpole cancellation condition. We then study this possibility in the concrete setting of classical type IIA flux compactifications with (anti-)O6-planes, (anti-)D6-branes and/or KK monopoles and show that, nonetheless, parametrically controlled dS vacua are strongly constrained. In particular, we find that such dS vacua are ruled out at parametrically large volume and/or parametrically small string coupling. We also find obstructions in the general case where the parametrically large field is an arbitrary field combination.

The knowledge on the deposition and retention of the viral particle of SARS-CoV-2 in the respiratory tract during the very initial intake from the ambient air is of prime importance to understand the infectious process and COVID-19 initial symptoms. We propose to use a modified version of a widely tested lung deposition model developed by the ICRP, in the context of the ICRP Publication 66, that provides deposition patterns of microparticles in different lung compartments. In the model, we mimicked the "environmental decay" of the virus, determined by controlled experiments related to normal speeches, by the radionuclide 11C that presents comparable decay rates. Our results confirm clinical observations on the high virus retentions observed in the extrathoracic region and the lesser fraction on the alveolar section (in the order of 5), which may shed light on physiopathology of clinical events as well on the minimal inoculum required to establish infection.

Abstract We investigate de Sitter solutions of N=1 $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ supergravity with an F-term scalar potential near a no-scale Minkowski point, as they may in particular arise from flux compactifications in string theory. We show that a large class of such solutions has a universal tachyon with η≤−43 $$ \eta \le -\frac{4}{3} $$ at positive vacuum energies, thus forbidding meta-stable de Sitter vacua and slow-roll inflation. The tachyon aligns with the sgoldstino in the Minkowski limit, whereas the sgoldstino itself is generically stable in the de Sitter vacuum due to mass mixing effects. We specify necessary conditions for the superpotential and the Kähler potential to avoid the instability. Our result may also help to explain why the program of classical de Sitter hunting has remained unsuccessful, while constructions involving instantons or non-geometric fluxes have led to various examples of meta-stable de Sitter vacua.

The cellular proto-oncogene c-myc is an important transcription factor that plays a role in several cellular activities such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. It follows that regulation of c-myc expression is crucial for maintaining cell integrity. Amplification or translocation can convert this proto-oncogene into an activated oncogene, thereby deregulating c-myc expression. Changes in the expression of c-myc leading to malignant cell growth and tumor progression can also be triggered by extrinsic factors. It has been reported that iron can increase cell proliferation, mainly by stimulating DNA synthesis as well as by enhancing c-myc expression. Here, we studied the effect of iron on cells in which c-myc expression is deregulated by either chromosomal translocation or gene amplification. When added to Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines, iron markedly inhibits cell proliferation. This effect is mediated by a cell cycle arrest in G2/M, followed by an important decrease in c-myc expression, whereas no effect could be observed in a cell line harboring amplified c-myc. Moreover, the down-regulation of c-myc expression, which is independent from cell cycle blockade, leads to cell death by apoptosis. Collectively, our results suggest the existence of a novel iron-dependent cell cycle regulatory mechanism involving modulation of translocated c-myc gene expression. 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de Lactobacillus buchneri aplicado exclusivamente ou em combinação com L. plantarum no perfil fermentativo, na estabilidade aeróbia e no valor nutritivo de silagens de milho e de cana-de-açúcar. O delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado foi utilizado com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos de silagem de milho foram: controle, sem adição de lactobacilos; 1x10(5) ufc g-1 de L. buchneri; e 1x10(5) ufc g-1 de L. buchneri e L. plantarum. Na silagem de cana-de-açúcar, os tratamentos foram: controle; e adição de 1x10(5) ufc g-1 de L. buchneri. As silagens foram armazenadas por 150 dias. O tratamento das silagens de milho não afetou a maioria das variáveis relacionadas ao valor nutritivo, às características fermentativas, aos perfis microbiológicos, às perdas e à estabilidade aeróbia. Nas silagens de cana-de-açúcar, o tratamento com L. buchneri apresentou maior teor de matéria seca, sem apresentar diferenças para as variáveis de valor nutritivo. Além disso, foram observados outros resultados típicos da adição de L. buchneri: menor perda total de matéria seca e menores perdas devidas à produção de gases. A aplicação exclusiva de L. buchneri ou em associação a L. plantarum não altera a qualidade e a eficiência de conservação das silagens de milho. Contudo, nas silagens de cana-de-açúcar, a aplicação exclusiva de L. buchneri reduz as perdas de conservação.

The present experimental assay evaluated the effect of lab silo sealing methods on the ensilage of the sugarcane, with or without microbial additives (Lactobacillus plantarum and Propionibacterium acidipropionici). Twenty-liter plastic buckets were used as experimental silos, which were sealed with either a polyethylene sheet (silo cover with a mesh size of 200 µm) or an appropriate plastic lid equipped with Bunsen valve. Silos were stored for 30, 60, or 90 days. Fermentative losses, chemical composition, organic acids, ethanol and aerobic stability were evaluated. The sealing method employed did not influence most of evaluated variables, showing a small decrease of effluent production in silos covered with polyethylene sheet. The microbial additive did not avoid dry matter (DM) fermentative losses in sugarcane silages (216 g kg-1), nor affected aerobic stability (44.6 hours). The levels of neutral and acid detergent fiber of fresh sugarcane increased after ensiling due to DM losses as gases and effluent. The ethanol content of silages was not influenced by treatments (mean 146 g kg-1 of DM). The sealing methods of experimental silos were not affected by the evaluated variables; polyethylene sheet and plastic lid show the same performance on the fermentative model and both methods represent well the conditions of large scale farm silos.

Nesta pesquisa, comparou-se a inclusão de aditivo composto por cepas de Lactobacillus brevis + Enterococcus faecium + L. plantarum à inoculação com aditivo comercial contendo cepas de Lactobacillus buchneri e à ensilagem sem aditivos (controle). As silagens foram confeccionadas em silos experimentais e armazenadas por 90 dias antes da abertura do silo. Foram avaliadas a composição bromatológica da cana-de-açúcar antes e após a ensilagem, a composição de ácidos orgânicos e etanol das silagens, a estabilidade aeróbia e as perdas fermentativas durante o processo de ensilagem. O uso do aditivo composto e do aditivo comercial contendo cepas de Lactobacillus buchneri provocou aumento da produção de efluentes e de gases e da perda total de matéria seca. O teor de ácido lático da silagem aumentou com o uso do aditivo composto, embora esse aditivo também tenha elevado o teor de etanol (18,6% da MS) em relação ao da silagem controle (14,4%). A estabilidade aeróbia da silagem não foi influenciada pelos inoculantes adicionados no processo de ensilagem. Os aditivos aplicados prejudicaram o processo de ensilagem da cana-de-açúcar.In this study, the inclusion of Lactobacillus brevis + Enterococcus faecium + L. plantarum was compared to the inoculation with a commercial additive containing strains of Lactobacillus buchneri and to the silage without additives (control). Silages were prepared in experimental silos and stored for 90 days before opening of the silos. It was evaluated chemical composition of sugarcane before and after ensiling process, composition of organic acids and ethanol in the silages, aerobic stability and fermentative losses during the ensiling process. Use of compound additive and commercial additive containing strains of Lactobacillus buchneri increased production of effluents and gas and total dry matter losses. Lactic acid content in the silage increased with the use of compound additive, although this additive had increased content of ethanol (18.6% of DM) compared with the control ensilage (14.4%). Aerobic stability in the silage was not influenced by inoculants added into ensilage process. The additives used have impaired the ensiling process of sugarcane.

This trial evaluated the addition of Lactobacillus plantarum, L. brevis and Enterococcus faecium combo additive against a control treatment. The silages were made in laboratory silos that were stored for 30, 60, 90 or 120 days before opening. We evaluated the chemical composition of the forage before and after ensiling and the fermentative losses of silages. The additive decreased (p < 0.01) effluent production (11.4 kg ton-1) compared to control silage (14.0 kg ton-1), but it increased (p < 0.01) the Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) from 45.6% and 24.5% to 47.0 and 25.1% for control and additive silages, respectively. The storage periods affected (p < 0.01) effluent production, Dry Matter Losses (DML), NDF, ADF and pH variables. Fermentative losses were very low because of the adequate characteristics of maize for ensilage.
