The hydrodynamic characteristics and associated far-field acoustics of installed elliptical jets were studied using linear models based on the Navier–Stokes equations. A compressible elliptical vortex-sheet model predicted that the growth rates of the varicose [Formula: see text] and wagging [Formula: see text] modes decreased with the aspect ratio, whereas the growth rate of the flapping [Formula: see text] mode increased, which was consistent with previous studies using finite-thickness stability models. Using a propagation model adapted from the Lighthill acoustic analogy, it was found that the acoustic efficiency of the “varicose” [Formula: see text] mode is significantly higher than the “flapping” [Formula: see text] and “wagging” [Formula: see text] modes for both free- and installed jets. Increasing the aspect ratio of the elliptical jet produces a slight reduction in sound for the [Formula: see text] mode, a significant decrease in the [Formula: see text] mode, and a significant increase for the [Formula: see text] mode. A similar trend was observed for the installed case. An exponential relationship between the jet–plate distance and scattered sound was found for elliptical jets, as observed for circular jets. Other geometric parameters such as the orientation angle of the ellipse were also analyzed.

We investigate the intermittency of the coupling behaviour in screeching twin round supersonic jets at low Mach numbers across a range of nozzle spacings. Application of proper orthogonal decomposition combined with time-frequency wavelet analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition shows that intermittency can manifest in twin jets as either a competition between the two symmetries, or the jets uncoupling and recoupling. The time scales on which symmetry switching occurs can vary strongly, ranging from $O(10^2)$ to $O(10^3)$ screech cycles. A transition from one symmetry to another is accompanied by a slight change in the screech frequency ranging from 0.30 % to 0.63 %. It was observed that complete uncoupling occurred only at the largest nozzle spacing of $s/D=6$ and at Mach numbers close to modal staging. When the jets are uncoupled they screech at slightly different frequencies, with a disparity of approximately 0.6 %. The coupling is particularly intermittent in the transition from the A1 to A2 branch, where the A2 mode is first observed, and tends toward steady coupling with increasing Mach number.

Ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), and temporal cortex (TE) all contribute to visual decision-making. Accumulating evidence suggests that vlPFC may play a central role in multiple cognitive operations, perhaps resembling domain-general regions of the human frontal lobe. We trained monkeys in a task calling for learning, retrieval, and spatial selection of rewarded target objects. Recordings of neural activity covered large areas of vlPFC, dlPFC, and TE. Results suggested a central role for vlPFC in each cognitive operation with strong coding of each task feature, while only location was strongly coded in dlPFC and current object identity in TE. During target selection, target location was communicated first from vlPFC to dlPFC, followed by extensive mutual support. In vlPFC, stimulus identities were independently coded in different task operations. The results suggest a central role for the inferior frontal convexity in controlling successive operations of a complex, multi-step task.

Here, we examine the possible effects of future sea-ice loss at 2°C global warming above pre-industrial levels on winter temperature extremes across the Northern Hemisphere, using coordinated experiments from the Polar Amplification Model Intercomparison Project. 1-in-20-year cold extremes are simulated to become less severe at high- and mid-latitudes in response to Arctic sea-ice loss. 1-in-20-year winter warm extremes become warmer at northern high latitudes due to sea-ice loss, but warm by less than cold extremes. We compare the response to sea-ice loss to that from global sea surface temperature (SST) change also at 2°C global warming. SST change causes less severe cold extremes and more severe warm extremes globally. Except northern high latitudes, the response to SST change is of larger magnitude than that to Arctic sea-ice loss.

Shock-containing supersonic jets undergoing resonance processes are challenging from both a measurement and simulation perspective. These jets are host to a broad range of complex fluid phenomena: intense acoustic waves, turbulence, wavepackets and strong shock waves. Strong shocks present a challenge to both the experimental and numerical researcher. In the paper of Léon et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A36), a novel optical technique based on multi-axis digital holographic interferometry is applied to the study of a highly underexpanded screeching jet, producing density measurements of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Where prior studies have been restricted to extrapolating the three-dimensional field from two-dimensional slices or projections, in this work the authors directly measure the three-dimensional helical structure of the wavepacket associated with jet screech.

The locations of Ly-$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) at the end of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) are expected to correlate with regions of ionised hydrogen, traced by the redshifted 21~cm hyperfine line. Mapping the neutral hydrogen around regions with detected and localised LAEs offers an avenue to constrain the brightness temperature of the Universe within the EoR by providing an expectation for the spatial distribution of the gas, thereby providing prior information unavailable to power spectrum measurements. We use a test set of 12 hours of observations from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in extended array configuration, to constrain the neutral hydrogen signature of 58 LAEs, detected with the Subaru Hypersuprime Cam in the \textit{Silverrush} survey, centred on $z$=6.58. We assume that detectable emitters reside in the centre of ionised HII bubbles during the end of reionization, and predict the redshifted neutral hydrogen signal corresponding to the remaining neutral regions using a set of different ionised bubble radii. A prewhitening matched filter detector is introduced to assess detectability. We demonstrate the ability to detect, or place limits upon, the amplitude of brightness temperature fluctuations, and the characteristic HII bubble size. The ability to solve novel complex problems predicts success in a wide range of areas. Recent research suggests that the ability to cognitively segment complex problems into smaller parts constrains nonverbal reasoning in adults. This study aimed to test whether cognitively segmenting problems improves nonverbal reasoning performance for children as it does for adults. A total of 115 children aged 6–10 years completed two versions of a modified traditional matrix reasoning task in which demands on working memory, integration, and processing speed were minimised, such that the only significant requirement was to break each problem into its constituent parts. In one version of the task, participants were presented with a traditional 2×2 Matrix and asked to draw the missing matrix item into a response box below. In a second version, the problem was broken down into its component features across three separate cells, reducing the need for participants to segment the problem. As with adults, performance was better in the condition in which the problems were separated into component parts. Children with lower fluid intelligence did not benefit more in the separated condition than children with higher fluid intelligence, and there was no evidence that segmenting problems was more beneficial for younger than older children. This study demonstrates that cognitive segmentation is a critical component of complex problem-solving for children, as it is for adults. By forcing children to focus their attention on separate parts of a complex visual problem, their performance can be dramatically improved.

C-type lectins (CTLs) represent a large family of soluble and membrane-bound proteins which bind calcium dependently via carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs) to glycan residues presented on the surface of a variety of pathogens. The deconvolution of a cell’s glycan code by CTLs underpins several important physiological processes in mammals such as pathogen neutralization and opsonization, leukocyte trafficking, and the inflammatory response. However, as our knowledge of CTLs has developed it has become apparent that the role of this innate immune family of proteins can be double-edged, where some pathogens have developed approaches to subvert and exploit CTL interactions to promote infection and sustain the pathological state. Equally, CTL interactions with host glycoproteins can contribute to inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and cancer whereby, in certain contexts, they exacerbate inflammation and drive malignant progression. This review discusses the ‘dual agent’ roles of some of the major mammalian CTLs in both resolving and promoting infection, inflammation and inflammatory disease and highlights opportunities and emerging approaches for their therapeutic modulation.

This paper describes the mechanism underpinning modal staging behaviour in screeching jets. An upstream-propagating subsonic guided-jet mode is shown to be active in all stages of screech. Axial variation of shock-cell spacing manifests in the spectral domain as a series of suboptimal peaks. It is demonstrated that the guided-jet mode may be energized by interactions of the Kelvin–Helmholtz wavepacket with not only the primary shock wavenumber peak, but also suboptimal peaks; interaction with suboptimals is shown to be responsible for closing the resonance loop in multiple stages of jet screech. A consideration of the full spectral representation of the shocks reconciles several of the classical models and results for jet screech that had heretofore been paradoxical. It is demonstrated that there are multiple standing waves present in the near field of screeching jets, corresponding to the superposition of the various waves active in these jets. Multimodal behaviour is explored for jets in a range of conditions, demonstrating that multiple peaks in the frequency spectra can be due to either changes in which peak of the shock spectra the Kelvin–Helmholtz wavepacket is interacting with, or a change in azimuthal mode, or both. The absence of modal staging in high-aspect-ratio non-axisymmetric jets is also explained in the context of the aforementioned mechanism. The paper closes with a new proposed theory for frequency selection in screeching jets, based on the observation that these triadic interactions appear to underpin selection of the guided-jet mode wavelength in all measured cases.

In the United Kingdom, where 90% of residents are projected to live in urban areas by 2050, projecting changes in urban heat islands (UHIs) is essential to municipal adaptation. Increased summer temperatures are linked to increased mortality. Using the new regional U.K. Climate Projections, UKCP18-regional, we estimate the 1981–2079 trends in summer urban and rural near-surface air temperatures and in UHI intensities during day and at night in the 10 most populous built-up areas in England. Summer temperatures increase by 0.45°–0.81°C per decade under RCP8.5, depending on the time of day and location. Nighttime temperatures increase more in urban than rural areas, enhancing the nighttime UHI by 0.01°–0.05°C per decade in all cities. When these upward UHI signals emerge from 2008–18 variability, positive summer nighttime UHI intensities of up to 1.8°C are projected in most cities. However, we can prevent most of these upward nighttime UHI signals from emerging by stabilizing climate to the Paris Agreement target of 2°C above preindustrial levels. In contrast, daytime UHI intensities decrease in nine cities, at rates between −0.004° and −0.05°C per decade, indicating a trend toward a reduced daytime UHI effect. These changes reflect different feedbacks over urban and rural areas and are specific to UKCP18-regional. Future research is important to better understand the drivers of these UHI intensity changes.

International audience; Acoustic measurements of unheated supersonic underexpanded jets with ideally-expanded Mach numbers of 1.14, 1.38 and 1.50 are presented. Of the three components of supersonic jet noise, the focus is on the broadband shock-associated noise (BBSAN) component. Motivated by the modelling of BBSAN using the wavepacket framework, a traversable microphone ring is used to decompose the acoustic pressure into azimuthal Fourier modes. Unlike noise radiated downstream, BBSAN is dominated by azimuthal modes 1 through 3 which are approximately 3-4dB/St stronger than the axisymmetric component. Crucially, the relative contribution of successive modes to BBSAN is sensitive to observer angle and jet operating condition. Four azimuthal modes are necessary to reconstruct the total BBSAN signal to within 1dB/St accuracy for the conditions presented here. The analysis suggests, however, that the number of modes required to maintain this accuracy increases as the peak frequency shifts upward. The results demonstrate the need to carefully consider the azimuthal content of BBSAN when comparing acoustic measurements to predictions made by jet noise models built on instability theory.

Anti-HLA-antibody characteristics aid to risk-stratify patients and improve long-term renal graft outcomes. Complement activation by donor-specific antibody (DSA) is an important characteristic that may determine renal allograft outcome. There is heterogeneity in graft outcomes within the moderate to high immunological risk cases (cross-match-positive). We explored the role of C3d-positive DSAs in sub-stratification of cross-match-positive cases and relate to the graft outcomes. We investigated 139 cross-match-positive living-donor renal transplant recipients from four transplant centres in the United Kingdom. C3d assay was performed on serum samples obtained at pretreatment (predesensitization) and Day 14 post-transplant. C3d-positive DSAs were found in 52 (37%) patients at pretreatment and in 37 (27%) patients at Day 14 post-transplant. Median follow-up of patients was 48 months (IQR 20.47–77.57). In the multivariable analysis, pretreatment C3d-positive DSA was independently associated with reduced overall graft survival, the hazard ratio of 3.29 (95% CI 1.37–7.86). The relative risk of death-censored five-year graft failure was 2.83 (95% CI 1.56–5.13). Patients with both pretreatment and Day 14 C3d-positive DSAs had the worst five-year graft survival at 45.5% compared with 87.2% in both pretreatment and Day 14 C3d-negative DSA patients with the relative risk of death-censored five-year graft failure was 4.26 (95% CI 1.79, 10.09). In this multicentre study, we have demonstrated for the first time the utility of C3d analysis as a distinctive biomarker to sub-stratify the risk of poor graft outcome in cross-match-positive living-donor renal transplantation.

Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is one of the most important factors influencing hydrologic and climatic quantities, and increases in ETo are often considered as a primary cause for drying under global warming scenarios. Based on bias‐corrected data from the Half a degree Additional Warming, Prognosis and Projected Impacts (HAPPI) experiment, we investigated changes in ETo and drying across the Yellow River Basin (YRB) for 1.5°C and 2°C stabilized warming, relative to the current decade (2006–2015). We used changes in the climatic water deficit (WD: defined as precipitation (P) minus (ETo) to determine drying and wetting trends. Results projected that mean annual ETo would increase significantly over the whole YRB, under 1.5°C and 2°C warming scenarios, with an increase of 4.54% (1.57–7.59% full uncertainty range) and 7.66% (4.49–10.61%), at 1.5°C and 2°C, respectively, averaged over the YRB for the multi‐model mean. It is unclear whether the YRB source region (the NE region of the Tibet Plateau) would be drier or wetter under 1.5°C and 2°C of warming, although it is likely that the N regions of the YRB, and the whole YRB except for the source region will be drier under 1.5°C and 2°C warming scenarios, respectively. With an additional 0.5°C warming, further intensification of drying is projected in the whole YRB, resulting from a more pronounced increase in ETo, and lesser increase/decrease in P. The increased ETo projected under a 0.5°C additional warming was mainly attributed to rising maximum temperatures (tasmax). These results highlight the importance of ETo, in terms of potential future YRB drying, and our study suggests that limiting future warming to 1.5°C would impact regional drying the least.

In 2015, El Niño contributed to severe droughts in equatorial Asia (EA). The severe droughts enhanced fire activity in the dry season (June–November), leading to massive fire emissions of CO2 and aerosols. Based on large event attribution ensembles of the MIROC5 atmospheric global climate model, we suggest that historical anthropogenic warming increased the chances of meteorological droughts exceeding the 2015 observations in the EA area. We also investigate changes in drought in future climate simulations, in which prescribed sea surface temperature data have the same spatial patterns as the 2015 El Niño with long-term warming trends. Large probability increases of stronger droughts than the 2015 event are projected when events like the 2015 El Niño occur in the 1.5 and 2.0 ∘C warmed climate ensembles according to the Paris Agreement goals. Further drying is projected in the 3.0 ∘C ensemble according to the current mitigation policies of nations. An investigation of shock diffraction through a non-quiescent background medium is presented using both experimental and numerical techniques. Unlike diffracting shocks in quiescent media, a spatial distortion of the shock front occurs, producing a region of constant shock angle. An example of this process arises in the exhaust from a pulse-detonation combustor. As the background velocity is increased, such as through the inclusion of a converging nozzle at the exhaust, the spatial distortion becomes more apparent. Numerical simulations using a compressible Euler solver demonstrate that the distortion is not due to the geometrical influence of the nozzle, but rather is a function of the magnitude of the background flow velocity. The distortion is studied using a modified geometrical shock dynamics formulation which includes the background flow and is validated against experiments. A simple model is presented to predict the shock distortion angle in the weak-shock limit. Finally, the axial decay behaviour of the shock is investigated and it is shown that the advection of the shock by the background flow delays the arrival of the head and tail of the expansion characteristic at the centreline. This leads to an increase in the rate of decay of the shock Mach number as the background flow velocity is increased.

Simple Summary Exportin-1 is a nuclear transport protein that is overexpressed in cancer cells and associated with inferior outcomes across a range of malignancies. Selinexor is a novel FDA-approved inhibitor of Exportin-1 (XPO1). Although significant research has focused on integration of selinexor into the treatment regimens of adult cancers, it is increasingly recognized that XPO1-directed therapy may be effective as part of management of childhood cancers. We therefore summarize the history of, and latest knowledge about, the function and therapeutic inhibition of XPO1 as it relates to childhood cancer pathogenesis and treatment. Abstract Overexpression of Exportin-1 (XPO1), a key regulator of nuclear-to-cytoplasmic transport, is associated with inferior patient outcomes across a range of adult malignancies. Targeting XPO1 with selinexor has demonstrated promising results in clinical trials, leading to FDA approval of its use for multiple relapsed/refractory cancers. However, XPO1 biology and selinexor sensitivity in childhood cancer is only recently being explored. In this review, we will focus on the differential biology of childhood and adult cancers as it relates to XPO1 and key cargo proteins. We will further explore the current state of pre-clinical and clinical development of XPO1 inhibitors in childhood cancers. Finally, we will outline potentially promising future therapeutic strategies for, as well as potential challenges to, integrating XPO1 inhibition to improve outcomes for children with cancer.

We describe the performance of the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA), the prototype for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope ASKAP. BETA is the first aperture synthesis radio telescope to use phased array feed technology, giving it the ability to electronically form up to nine dual-polarization beams. We report the methods developed for forming and measuring the beams, and the adaptations that have been made to the traditional calibration and imaging procedures in order to allow BETA to function as a multi-beam aperture synthesis telescope. We describe the commissioning of the instrument and present details of BETA's performance: sensitivity, beam characteristics, polarimetric properties and image quality. We summarise the astronomical science that it has produced and draw lessons from operating BETA that will be relevant to the commissioning and operation of the final ASKAP telescope., Accepted for publication in PASA

A twin-jet vortex-sheet model is applied to study the axisymmetric screech modes, generated by simply converging nozzles, for low supersonic Mach numbers. This allows for the identification of the different waves supported by the flow for different conditions. Propagative regions for the upstream-propagating neutral guided jet mode are observed to vary both as a function of solution symmetry, SS and SA, and the jet separation, whilst bounding the screech tones. The A1 screech mode is observed to be cut-off sharply by the SS lower bound. Screech frequency predictions are performed using the wavenumbers obtained from the vortex-sheet model, which provided a good qualitative agreement with the experimental data. Additional A1 and A2 screech tones were observed in the acoustic spectrum as the jet separation was increased, pointing to the existence of new resonance cycles associated with the different symmetries of the flow. These additional tones exist simultaneously and are seen to merge together as increases leaving only a single A1 and A2 tone.

This paper explores the screech closure mechanism for different axisymmetric modes in shock-containing jets. While many of the discontinuities in tonal frequency exhibited by screeching jets can be associated with a change in the azimuthal mode, there has to date been no explanation for the existence of multiple axisymmetric modes at different frequencies. This paper provides just such an explanation. As shown in previous works, specific wavenumbers arise from the interaction of waves in the flow with the shocks. This provides new paths for driving upstream-travelling waves that can potentially close the resonance loop. Predictions using locally parallel and spatially periodic linear stability analyses and the wavenumber spectrum of the shock-cell structure suggest that the A1 mode resonance is closed by a wave generated when the Kelvin-Helmholtz mode interacts with the leading wavenumber of the shock-cell structure. The A2 mode is closed by a wave that arises due to interaction between the Kelvin-Helmholtz wave and a secondary wavenumber peak, which arises from the spatial variation of the shock-cell wavelength. The predictions are shown to closely match experimental data, and possible justifications for the dominance of each mode are provided based on the growth rates of the absolute instability., Submitted to the Journal of Fluid Mechanics

Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) can have major impact on surface wintertime weather, especially at mid-high latitudes. We do not yet have a complete understanding of why some of these events influence our weather more than others, but one factor may be the dynamical nature of the SSW; whether it involves a split or a displacement of the polar vortex, and one way to explore this is through comprehensive climate models. Here, we analyze the stratospheric dynamics of SSWs within models from the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). All CMIP6 models simulate SSWs to some degree, although we find a persistent bias in the relative underrepresentation of split vortex events. When comparing with CMIP5 models, large biases persist despite significant model improvements in resolution and in representing atmospheric processes. We show that the simulated displacement frequency is strongly related to climatological lower stratospheric eddy heat flux. The split frequency, on the other hand, is not related to lower stratospheric eddy heat flux, but is strongly related to both the vortex geometry (aspect ratio) and lower stratospheric zonal winds. This suggests that those models with a large positive bias in zonal winds may inhibit the propagation of zonal wavenumber 2 planetary waves from the troposphere, which are associated with split events. Our results suggest how future model development may address these longstanding biases.

Time-resolved visualisation of shock wave motion within a powered resonant tube (PRT) is presented for the regurgitant mode of operation. Shock position and velocity are measured as functions of both time and space from ultra-high-speed schlieren visualisations. The shock wave velocity is seen to vary across the resonator length for both the incident and reflected waves. Three mechanisms are explored as explanations for the variation in velocity: change in local fluid velocity, variation in shock strength and variations in local temperature. For the incident wave, local fluid velocity and shock strength are extracted from the data and both are demonstrated to contribute to the observed variation, with a non-trivial remainder likely explained by variation in temperature.

Supersonic jets, particularly shock-containing jets, often exhibit high-intensity, discrete-frequency acoustic tones. These tones are the signature of an aeroacoustic resonance loop established by the flow. This paper considers two of the classical forms of supersonic jet resonance: screech in shock-containing free jets and tones generated by the impingement of a jet against a surface. The first half of the paper provides a historical perspective on research into both forms of resonance, ranging from the seminal works of Alan Powell to recent contributions from high-fidelity numerical simulation, experiment, and stability theory. The second half of the paper provides a critical assessment of current understanding around the four processes that characterize jet resonance: a downstream propagation of energy, an acoustic generation mechanism, an upstream propagation of energy, and a receptivity mechanism.

The role of the external boundary conditions of the nozzle surface on the azimuthal mode selection of impinging supersonic jets is demonstrated for the first time. Jets emanating from thin- and infinite-lipped nozzles at a nozzle pressure ratio of $3.4$ and plate spacing of $5.0D$, where $D$ is the nozzle exit diameter, are investigated using high resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV) and acoustic measurements. Proper orthogonal decomposition is applied to the PIV fields and a difference in dominant instability mode is found. To investigate possible explanations for the change in instability mode, additional nozzle external boundary conditions are investigated, including the addition of acoustic dampening foam. A difference in acoustic feedback path is suggested to be the cause for the change in dominant azimuthal modes between the flows. This is due to the thin-lip case containing a feedback path that is concluded to be closed exclusively by a reflection from the nozzle base surface, rather than directly to the nozzle lip. The ability of the flow to form a feedback path that maximises the impingement tone gain is discussed with consideration of the numerous acoustic feedback paths possible for the given nozzle external boundary conditions.

We report on a search for low-frequency radio variability in 944 bright (> 4Jy at 154 MHz) unresolved, extragalactic radio sources monitored monthly for several years with the Murchison Widefield Array. In the majority of sources we find very low levels of variability with typical modulation indices < 5%. We detect 15 candidate low frequency variables that show significant long term variability (>2.8 years) with time-averaged modulation indices M = 3.1 - 7.1%. With 7/15 of these variable sources having peaked spectral energy distributions, and only 5.7% of the overall sample having peaked spectra, we find an increase in the prevalence of variability in this spectral class. We conclude that the variability seen in this survey is most probably a consequence of refractive interstellar scintillation and that these objects must have the majority of their flux density contained within angular diameters less than 50 milli-arcsec (which we support with multi-wavelength data). At 154 MHz we demonstrate that interstellar scintillation time-scales become long (~decades) and have low modulation indices, whilst synchrotron driven variability can only produce dynamic changes on time-scales of hundreds of years, with flux density changes less than one milli-jansky (without relativistic boosting). From this work we infer that the low frequency extra-galactic southern sky, as seen by SKA-Low, will be non-variable on time-scales shorter than one year., 19 pages, 11 figures

Antifreeze-protein mimic polymers are shown to enable solvent-free storage of important proteins for therapy and biotechnology by modulating ice growth., Proteins are ubiquitous in molecular biotechnology, biotechnology and as therapeutics, but there are significant challenges in their storage and distribution, with freezing often required. This is traditionally achieved by the addition of cryoprotective agents such as glycerol (or trehalose) or covalent modification of mutated proteins with cryoprotectants. Here, ice recrystallization inhibiting polymers, inspired by antifreeze proteins, are used synergistically with poly(ethylene glycol) as an alternative to glycerol. The primary mechanism of action appears to be preventing irreversible aggregation due to ice growth. The polymer formulation is successfully used to cryopreserve a range of important proteins including insulin, Taq DNA polymerase and an IgG antibody. The polymers do not require covalent conjugation, nor modification of the protein and are already used in a wide range of biomedical applications, which will facilitate translation to a range of biologics.

The present work focuses on the study of the resonance and coupling of an underexpanded circular twin-jet system operating at a nozzle pressure ratio of . Particle image velocimetry data from previous work were revisited, and a symmetry-imposed proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was performed. It is shown that the system is dominated by a single POD mode pair symmetric about the internozzle plane, and the resonance loop is modulated by a third POD mode related to shear thickness modulation. A spatial Fourier transform of the leading POD mode pair leads to the identification of the peak wavenumbers and radial shapes of the different waves at play in the screech phenomenon. Locally parallel linear stability analysis around the experimental mean flow is also performed, in order to provide clarification of the mode ‘locking’ mechanism, i.e. the selection of the global mode associated with screech. It is shown that the characteristics of the Kelvin–Helmholtz wavepackets alone are not sufficient to explain the coupling observed in the experimental data. A consideration of the upstream-travelling guided jet mode offers an explanation; only specific symmetries of upstream modes can be supported in the frequency range at which resonance occurs. Results from stability analysis point to structures at frequencies and wavenumbers close to those found experimentally, and their spatial structures show excellent agreement with the POD modes. The present results suggest that the resonance loop is closed by an upstream-travelling guided jet mode for the twin-jet system at high nozzle pressure ratio.

Classical executive tasks, such as Wisconsin card-sorting and verbal fluency, are widely used as tests of frontal lobe control functions. Since the pioneering work of Shallice and Burgess (1991), it has been known that complex, naturalistic tasks can capture deficits that are missed in these classical tests. Matching this finding, deficits in several classical tasks are predicted by loss of fluid intelligence, linked to damage in a specific cortical “multiple-demand” (MD) network, while deficits in a more naturalistic task are not. To expand on these previous results, we examined the effect of focal brain lesions on three new tests – a modification of the previously-used Hotel task, a new test of task switching after extended delays, and a test of decision-making in imagined real-life scenarios. As potential predictors of impairment we measured volume of damage to a priori MD and default mode (DMN) networks, as well as cortical damage outside these networks. Deficits in the three new tasks were substantial, but were not explained by loss of fluid intelligence, or by volume of damage to either MD or DMN networks. Instead, deficits were associated with diverse lesions, and not strongly correlated with one another. The results confirm that naturalistic tasks capture cognitive deficits beyond those measured by fluid intelligence. We suggest, however, that these deficits may not arise from specific control operations required by complex behaviour. Instead, like everyday activities, complex tasks combine a rich variety of interacting cognitive components, bringing many opportunities for processing to be disturbed.

While much variance in general intelligence or g is genetic, a substantial environmental component suggests a possible role for parent-child interaction. In particular, previous evidence suggests the importance of parental scaffolding, or provision of cognitive structure to shape child behaviour. A role for scaffolding is consistent with the proposal that, in adult cognition, a critical aspect of g is decomposition of complex problems into a structure of simpler parts. Building on previous work, we recruited 164 parents attending Children’s Centres with a child aged 2-4 years, and examined parental scaffolding during a book-sharing activity. Scaffolding was measured as the first principal component of a variety of parental behaviours, including sensitivity, focusing attention, extending comprehension, and promoting child participation. Child g was measured as the first principal component of a broad cognitive battery, including language, attention, working memory, and executive function. Importantly, we assessed contributions of the parent’s own intelligence, education, and family income. Though these variables were all associated with child g, their links to parental scaffolding were weaker, and scaffolding remained predictive of child g even once the influence of these variables was removed. In contrast to the correlation with cognitive proficiency, scaffolding did not predict child pro-social behaviour. We suggest that parental scaffolding supports the child’s development of a broad skill of attentional structuring, promoting the across-the-board cognitive proficiency that is reflected in g.

The interaction between various wavelike structures in screeching jets is considered via both experimental measurements and linear stability theory. Velocity snapshots of screeching jets are used to produce a reduced order model of the screech cycle via proper orthogonal decomposition. Streamwise Fourier filtering is then applied to isolate the negative and positive wavenumber components, which for the waves of interest in this jet correspond to upstream and downstream-travelling waves. A global stability analysis on an experimentally derived base flow is conducted, demonstrating a close match to the results obtained via experiment, indicating that the mechanisms considered here are well represented in a linear framework. In both analyses, three distinct wavelike structures are evident. These three waves are those first shown by Tam & Hu (1989) to be supported by a cylindrical vortex sheet. One is the Kelvin-Helmholtz mode. Another is the upstream-travelling guided jet mode that has been a topic of recent discussion. The third component, with positive phase velocity, has not previously been identified in screeching jets. We provide evidence that this downstream-travelling wave is a duct-like mode similar to that recently identified in high-subsonic jets by Towne et al. (2017). We further demonstrate that both of the latter two waves are generated by the interaction between the Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepacket and the shock cells in the flow, according to a theory first proposed in Tam & Tanna (1982). Finally, we consider the periodic spatial modulation of the coherent velocity fluctuation evident in screeching jets, and show that this modulation is the result of the superposition of the three wavelike structures, with no evidence that the shocks in the flow modulate the growth of the Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepacket., 27 pages, 10 figures. An annular plenum is integrated downstream of six pulse detonation combustors arranged in a canannular configuration. The primary purpose of the plenum is the mitigation of pressure and velocity fluctuations, which is crucial for operation with a downstream turbine. The flow inside the plenum is investigated by means of flush-mounted pressure transducers arranged in the axial and circumferential directions. The test rig is operated in different firing patterns at 16.7 Hz per tube. Two firing patterns are studied to characterize the shock dynamics inside the plenum. The obtained data allows for a better understanding of shock interaction and attenuation inside the plenum, as well as the quantification of pressure fluctuations at the plenum outlet. Furthermore, a comparison is made between piezoresistive and piezoelectric pressure transducers, showing the capability of piezoresistive transducers for dynamic pressure measurements. The performance of the piezoresistive transducers allows for time-resolved measurement of both static and total pressure at the exit of the plenum. Moreover, the plenum results in a significant attenuation of the leading shock wave while redistributing its energy both spatially and temporally.
