Abstract

From Nov. 2019 to May 2020, the red supergiant star Betelgeuse experienced an unprecedented drop of brightness in the visible domain called the great dimming event. Large atmospheric dust clouds and large photospheric convective features are suspected to be responsible for it. To better understand the dimming event, we used mid-infrared long-baseline spectro-interferometric measurements of Betelgeuse taken with the VLTI/MATISSE instrument before (Dec. 2018), during (Feb. 2020), and after (Dec. 2020) the GDE. We present data in the 3.98 to 4.15\,$\mu$m range to cover SiO spectral features molecules as well as adjacent continuum. We have employed geometrical models, image reconstruction, as well as radiative transfer models to monitor the spatial distribution of SiO over the stellar surface. We find a strongly in-homogeneous spatial distribution of SiO that appears to be looking very different between our observing epochs, indicative of a vigorous activity in the stellar atmosphere. The contrast of our images is small in the pseudo-continuum for all epochs, implying that our MATISSE observations support both cold spot and dust cloud model.

Abstract

Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star of semi-regular variability, reached a historical minimum brightness in February 2020, known as the Great Dimming. Even though the brightness has returned to the values prior to the Great Dimming now, it continues to exhibit highly unusual behavior. Our goal is to study long-term dynamics of the photosphere, including during the Great Dimming. We applied the tomographic method, which allows different layers in the stellar atmosphere to be probed in order to reconstruct depth-dependent velocity fields. The method is based on the construction of spectral masks by grouping spectral lines from specific optical depths. These masks are cross-correlated with the observed spectra to recover the velocity field inside each atmospheric layer. We obtained about 2800 spectra over the past 15 years that were observed with the STELLA robotic telescope in Tenerife. We analyzed the variability of five different layers of Betelgeuse's photosphere. We found phase shift between the layers, as well as between the variability of velocity and photometry. The time variations of the widths of the cross-correlation function reveal propagation of two shockwaves during the Great Dimming. For about two years after the dimming, the timescale of variability was different between the inner and outer photospheric layers. By 2022, all the layers were pulsating with higher frequency corresponding with the first overtone. The combination of the extensive high-resolution spectroscopic data set with the tomographic method revealed the variable velocity fields in the photosphere of Betelgeuse, for the first time in such detail. Our results demonstrate that powerful shocks are the triggering mechanism for episodic mass-loss events, which may be the missing component to explain the mass-loss process in red supergiants., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Beyond these candidates, the associate tables in this Focused Product Release allow the entire community to explore the unique Gaia data for strong lensing studies further., Comment: 35 pages, 60 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

Abstract Background The KEYNOTE-048 trial showed that pembrolizumab-based first-line treatment for R/M HNSCC led to improved OS in the PD-L1 CPS ≥ 1 population when compared to the EXTREME regimen. However, the R/M HNSCC real-world population is generally frailer, often presenting with multiple comorbidities, worse performance status and older age than the population included in phase III clinical trials. Methods This is a retrospective, single-centre analysis of patients with R/M HNSCC treated with pembrolizumab-based first-line treatment. Results From February 2021 to March 2023, 92 patients were treated with pembrolizumab-based first-line treatment. Patients treated with pembrolizumab-based chemoimmunotherapy had better ECOG PS and younger age than those treated with pembrolizumab monotherapy. Median PFS and OS were 4 months and 8 months, respectively. PFS was similar among patients treated with pembrolizumab-based chemoimmunotherapy and pembrolizumab monotherapy, while patients treated with pembrolizumab monotherapy had worse OS (log-rank p =.001, HR 2.7). PFS and OS were improved in patients with PD-L1 CPS > = 20 (PFS: log-rank p =.005, HR 0.50; OS: log-rank p =.04, HR 0.57). Patients with higher ECOG PS scores had worse PFS and OS (PFS, log-rank p =.004; OS, log-rank p = 6e-04). In multivariable analysis, ECOG PS2 was associated with worse PFS and OS. Conclusions PFS in our real-world cohort was similar to the KEYNOTE-048 reference while OS was numerically inferior. A deeper understanding of clinical variables that might affect survival outcomes of patients with R/M HNSCC beyond ECOG PS and PD-L1 CPS is urgently needed.

23. Lumbar muscle involvement in the occurrence of osteoporotic vertebral fracture

Abstract

Objective: To determine if a lumbar musculature deficiency (paravertebral – PVM – and psoas – PM – muscles) is associated with a higher prevalence of vertebral fractures in osteoporotic patients. Methods: To constitute the fracture group, data were collected retrospectively from patients with one or more recent osteoporotic vertebral fractures between T10 and L5 such as non-injected computerized tomography (CT), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). A control group was made by matching the patients on age, bone mineral density measured by DXA and gender. We analyzed PM and PVM atrophy based on cross-sectional area (CSA) adjusted to the body area as well as fatty infiltration on a 3-level scale and the average muscle density in Hounsfield units (HU). Results: One hundred seventeen patients were included in each group. The fracture group had a lower PVM CSA than the control group (2197.92 ± 460.19 versus 2335.20 ± 394.42 mm2.m−2, respectively p = 0.015), but there was no significant difference in the PM (746.92 ± 197.89 versus 731.74 ± 215.53 mm2.m−2, respectively p = 0.575). The fracture group had a higher grade of fatty infiltration than the control group (PM: 1.3 ± 0.46 versus 1.07 ± 0.25, p < 0.001; PVM: 1.93 ± 0.5 versus 1.74 ± 0.5, p = 0.003) and a lower average muscle density (PM: 26.99 ± 12.83 versus 33.91 ± 8.12 HU, p < 0.001; PVM: 3.42 ± 21.06 versus 12.94 ± 18.88 HU, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study shows an association between a lack of axial musculature and the occurrence of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Preventive strengthening exercises could be proposed to osteoporotic patients.

24. Is Betelgeuse Really Rotating? Synthetic ALMA Observations of Large-scale Convection in 3D Simulations of Red Supergiants

Abstract

The evolved stages of massive stars are poorly understood, but invaluable constraints can be derived from spatially resolved observations of nearby red supergiants, such as Betelgeuse. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of Betelgeuse showing a dipolar velocity field have been interpreted as evidence for a projected rotation rate of about 5 km s ^−1 . This is 2 orders of magnitude larger than predicted by single-star evolution, which led to suggestions that Betelgeuse is a binary merger. We propose instead that large-scale convective motions can mimic rotation, especially if they are only partially resolved. We support this claim with 3D CO5BOLD simulations of nonrotating red supergiants that we postprocessed to predict ALMA images and SiO spectra. We show that our synthetic radial velocity maps have a 90% chance of being falsely interpreted as evidence for a projected rotation rate of 2 km s ^−1 or larger for our fiducial simulation. We conclude that we need at least another ALMA observation to firmly establish whether Betelgeuse is indeed rapidly rotating. Such observations would also provide insight into the role of angular momentum and binary interaction in the late evolutionary stages. The data will further probe the structure and complex physical processes in the atmospheres of red supergiants, which are immediate progenitors of supernovae and are believed to be essential in the formation of gravitational-wave sources.

Abstract

The rapid spread of Internet of Things technologies has enabled a continuous monitoring of indoor environmental quality in office environments by integrating monitoring devices equipped with low-cost sensors and cloud platforms for data storage and visualization. Critical aspects in the development of such monitoring systems are effective data acquisition, processing, and visualization strategies, which significantly influence the performance of the system both at monitoring device and at cloud platform level. This paper proposes novel strategies to address the challenges in the design of a complete monitoring system for indoor environmental quality. By adopting the proposed solution, one can reduce the data rate transfer between the monitoring devices and the server without loss of information, as well as achieve efficient data storage and aggregation on the server side to minimize retrieval times. Finally, enhanced flexibility in the dashboard for data visualization is obtained, thus enabling graph modifications without extensive coding efforts. The functionality of the developed system was assessed, with the collected data in good agreement with those from other instruments used as references.

Abstract

The Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) combines thermal, visual, acoustic, and air-quality conditions in indoor environments and affects occupants’ health, well-being, and comfort. Performing continuous monitoring to assess IEQ is increasingly proving to be important, also due to the large amount of time that people spend in closed spaces. In the present study, the design, development, and metrological characterization of a low-cost multi-sensor device is presented. The device is part of a wider system, hereafter referred to as PROMET&O (PROactive Monitoring for indoor EnvironmenTal quality & cOmfort), that also includes a questionnaire for the collection of occupants’ feedback on comfort perception and a dashboard to show end users all monitored data. The PROMET&O multi-sensor monitors the quality conditions of indoor environments thanks to a set of low-cost sensors that measure air temperature, relative humidity, illuminance, sound pressure level, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, and formaldehyde. The device architecture is described, and the design criteria related to measurement requirements are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the calibration of the device to ensure the metrological traceability of the measurements. Calibration procedures, based on the comparison to reference standards and following commonly employed or ad hoc developed technical procedures, were defined and applied to the bare sensors of air temperature and relative humidity, carbon dioxide, illuminance, sound pressure level, particulate matter, and formaldehyde. The next calibration phase in the laboratory will be aimed at analyzing the mutual influences of the assembled multi-sensor hardware components and refining the calibration functions.

Abstract

In this study, we report the enhanced electrochemical performance of a MnO2 electrode modified with a pH-sensitive co-polymer, activated at acidic pH, and designed to counteract MnO2 degradation in aqueous aqueous pseudocapacitors. The conformation of this polymer is controlled by the local pH changes that occur at the electrode/electrolyte interface during electrochemical stress associated to oxygen evolution.As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that the addition of the pH-sensitive polymer contributes to improved electrode integrity and lifetime under over-polarization with oxygen evolution. After undergoing 10 cycles of electrochemical stress, the MnO2/pH-sensitive polymer composite retains ∼ 70 % of its capacitance. This remarkable result stands in stark contrast with the pristine MnO2 electrode which fails catastrophically under the same stress conditions. We believe that this pH-induced self-protection mechanism represents a significant advancement in the development of novel smarter self-healing electroactive materials for the next generation of energy storage devices.

Abstract

Light-scattering particulate matter sensors can be very inexpensive, but also unreliable. They are often presented as a solution for the creation of dense monitoring networks, offering an alternative approach to mathematical modeling and interpolation techniques applied to data from institutional monitoring stations. The purpose of this article is to study the benefits provided by light-scattering sensors in measuring daily concentrations of particulate matter, when they are used to complement the existing institutional network of high-quality instrumentation. A one-year experiment campaign was performed, placing 56 light-scattering sensors close to an official monitoring station. The effectiveness of the sensors is evaluated by comparing the correlation of the sensors with the official data of the nearby station, with respect to the correlation between the same station and other stations in the official monitoring network. Finally, the different data sources are calibrated on a single reference station, in order to act as predictors of the PM concentration in the point of interest. Estimates are analyzed using root mean square error (RMSE) comparison.

Abstract

Purpose: Recently, ultrahigh-dose-rate radiation therapy (UHDR-RT) has emerged as a promising strategy to increase the benefit/risk ratio of external RT. Extensive work is on the way to characterize the physical and biological parameters that control the so-called “Flash” effect. However, this healthy/tumor differential effect is observable in in vivo models, which thereby drastically limits the amount of work that is achievable in a timely manner. Methods and Materials: In this study, zebrafish embryos were used to compare the effect of UHDR irradiation (8-9 kGy/s) to conventional RT dose rate (0.2 Gy/s) with a 68 MeV proton beam. Viability, body length, spine curvature, and pericardial edema were measured 4 days postirradiation. Results: We show that body length is significantly greater after UHDR-RT compared with conventional RT by 180 µm at 30 Gy and 90 µm at 40 Gy, while pericardial edema is only reduced at 30 Gy. No differences were obtained in terms of survival or spine curvature. Conclusions: Zebrafish embryo length appears as a robust endpoint, and we anticipate that this model will substantially fasten the study of UHDR proton-beam parameters necessary for “Flash.”

Abstract

Background and purpose: Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) involves frequent in-room imaging sessions contributing to additional patient irradiation. The present work provided patient-specific dosimetric data related to different imaging protocols and anatomical sites. Material and methods: We developed a Monte Carlo based software able to calculate 3D personalized dose distributions for five imaging devices delivering kV-CBCT (Elekta and Varian linacs), MV-CT (Tomotherapy machines) and 2D-kV stereoscopic images from BrainLab and Accuray. Our study reported the dose distributions calculated for pelvis, head and neck and breast cases based on dose volume histograms for several organs at risk. Results: 2D-kV imaging provided the minimum dose with less than 1 mGy per image pair. For a single kV-CBCT and MV-CT, median dose to organs were respectively around 30 mGy and 15 mGy for the pelvis, around 7 mGy and 10 mGy for the head and neck and around 5 mGy and 15 mGy for the breast. While MV-CT dose varied sparsely with tissues, dose from kV imaging was around 1.7 times higher in bones than in soft tissue. Daily kV-CBCT along 40 sessions of prostate radiotherapy delivered up to 3.5 Gy to the femoral heads. The dose level for head and neck and breast appeared to be lower than 0.4 Gy for every organ in case of a daily imaging session. Conclusions: This study showed the dosimetric impact of IGRT procedures. Acquisition parameters should therefore be chosen wisely depending on the clinical purposes and tailored to morphology. Indeed, imaging dose could be reduced up to a factor 10 with optimized protocols.

Abstract

The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The pilot TAIGA-1 complex is located in the Tunka valley, 50 km west from the southern tip of the lake Baikal.

Abstract

KASCADE and its extension array of KASCADE-Grande were devoted to measure individual air showers of cosmic rays in the primary energy range of 100 TeV to 1 EeV. The experiment has substantially contributed to investigate the energy spectrum and mass composition of cosmic rays in the transition region from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays as well as to quantify the characteristics of hadronic interaction models in the air shower development through validity tests using the multi-detector information from KASCADE-Grande. Although the data accumulation was completed in 2013, data analysis is still continuing. Recently, we investigated the reliability of the new hadronic interactions models of the SIBYLL version 2.3d only with the energy spectra from the KASCADE-Grande data. The evolution of the muon content of high energy air showers in the atmosphere is studied as well, using EPOS-LHC, SIBYLL 2.3, QGSJET-II-04 and SIBYLL 2.3c. In this talk, recent results from KASCADE-Grande and the update of the KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC) will be discussed.

Abstract

The corrected dependence of the mean depth of the EAS maximum $X_{max}$ on the energy was obtained from the data of the Tunka-133 array for 7 years and the TAIGA-HiSCORE array for 2 years. The parameter $\langle\ln A\rangle$, characterizing the mean mass compositon was derived from these results. The differential energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays in the energy range of $2\cdot 10^{14}$ – $2\cdot 10^{16}$ eV was reconstructed using the new parameter $Q_{100}$ the Cherenkov light flux at the core distance 100 m. Change of the parameter for the energy reconstuction for the TAIGA-HiSCORE from $Q_{200}$ to $Q_{100}$ provides a decreasing energy threshold for the spectrum to about 200 TeV.

Abstract

The Tunka-Grande experiment is a scintillation array with about 0.5 km$^2$ sensitive area at Tunka Valley, Siberia, for measuring charged particles and muons in extensive air showers (EASs). Tunka-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray studies in the energy range 10 PeV to about 1 EeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. This paper attempts to provide a synopsis of the current results of the experiment. In particular, the reconstruction of the all-particle energy spectrum in the range of 10 PeV to 1 EeV based on experimental data from four observation seasons is presented.
