Lead based bulk piezoelectric materials, e.g., PbZrxTi1‐xO3 (PZT), are widely used in electromechanical applications, sensors, and transducers, for which optimally performing thin films are needed. The results of a multi‐domain Landau–Ginzberg‐Devonshire model applicable to clamped ferroelectric thin films are used to predict the lattice symmetry and properties of clamped PZT thin films on different substrates. Guided by the thermal strain phase diagrams that are produced by this model, experimentally structural transitions are observed. These can be related to changes of the piezoelectric properties in PZT(x = 0.6) thin films that are grown on CaF2, SrTiO3 (STO) and 70% PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3‐30% PbTiO3 (PMN‐PT) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Through temperature en field dependent in situ X‐ray reciprocal space mapping (RSMs) and piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM), the low symmetry monoclinic phase and polarization rotation are observed in the film on STO and can be linked to the measured enhanced properties. The study identifies a monoclinic ‐rhombohedral MC‐MA‐R crystal symmetry path as the polarization rotation mechanism. The films on CaF2 and PMN‐PT remain in the same symmetry phase up to the ferroelectric‐paraelectric phase transition, as predicted. These results support the validity of the multi‐domain model which provides the possibility to predict the behavior of clamped, piezoelectric PZT thin films, and design films with enhanced properties. Microplasmas can be used for a wide range of technological applications and to improve the understanding of fundamental physics. Scanning electron microscopy, on the other hand, provides insights into the sample morphology and chemistry of materials from the mm‐ down to the nm‐scale. Combining both would provide direct insight into plasma‐sample interactions in real‐time and at high spatial resolution. Up till now, very few attempts in this direction have been made, and significant challenges remain. This work presents a stable direct current glow discharge microplasma setup built inside a scanning electron microscope. The experimental setup is capable of real‐time in situ imaging of the sample evolution during plasma operation and it demonstrates localized sputtering and sample oxidation. Further, the experimental parameters such as varying gas mixtures, electrode polarity, and field strength are explored and experimental V–I curves under various conditions are provided. These results demonstrate the capabilities of this setup in potential investigations of plasma physics, plasma‐surface interactions, and materials science and its practical applications. The presented setup shows the potential to have several technological applications, for example, to locally modify the sample surface (e.g., local oxidation and ion implantation for nanotechnology applications) on the µm‐scale. The formation of the ferroelectric domain structure as a result of irradiation by focused ion beam of [100]-cut 0.61Pb(Mg 1 ∕ 3 Nb 2 ∕ 3) O3–0.39PbTiO3 (PMN–PT) single crystals covered by surface artificial dielectric layer and with free surface was investigated. The dot irradiation resulted in formation of the wedge-like domains grown along [00 1 ̄ ] direction. For irradiation of the free surface, the domains are mainly located under the surface, while at the irradiated surface with an artificial dielectric layer the domains are located at the surface. It was shown that the subsurface wedge-shaped part of the domain is unstable and completely disappears after a month due to spontaneous backswitching under the action of the residual depolarization field. The revealed nonlinear dose dependence of the domain sizes was attributed to the distribution of the electric field using the point charge model. The domain interaction for the distance between irradiated dots below 30 μ m has been revealed in all samples. It was shown that the decrease of the distance between irradiated dots in the created domain row leads to an increase in the length of the central domains, which is explained by the contribution of all injected charges to the switching field. The features of nanodomain growth during local switching in X-cut lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) were comprehensively studied using the biased tip of a scanning probe microscope. The obtained results were discussed in terms of the kinetic approach. The revealed differences in domain growth in bulk LN and LNOI were attributed to the higher bulk conductivity of LNOI. The obtained influence of humidity on the shape and growth of isolated domains was attributed to the water meniscus. Analysis of the transition between the "forward growth" and "sideways growth" stages was performed by switching to the stripe electrode. A sand-glass-shaped domain was formed due to growth in the opposite direction after the domain touched the electrode. Stable periodical domain structures down to 300 nm were created and characterized in LNOI. Highly ordered comb-like domains of various alternating lengths, including four- and eight-fold increase periods, were produced by performing biased tip scanning along the Y axis. Formation of the domain structure by ion beam irradiation was studied in thermally depolarized Ce-doped strontium barium niobate single crystals covered by a dielectric layer. Three types of irradiation regimes were used: dot exposure, stripe exposure, and line exposure. The dependences of the domain size and depth on the irradiated dose were measured. The circular shape of the isolated domains with partially switched broad domain boundary was obtained. Isotropic domain growth was attributed to the step generation at the wall by merging with the residual nanodomains that appeared after thermal depolarization. The obtained linear dose dependence of the switched area was attributed to the screening of the depolarization field by the injected charge. The shape distortion of the domains growing in the neighborhood with already created ones was attributed to the electrostatic interaction of the approaching charged domain walls. The obtained results can be applied for the creation of precise domain patterns with arbitrary orientation and shape to produce nonlinear optical devices with improved characteristics, including electrically tunable diffractive optical elements. In integrated photonics, the precise knowledge of the waveguides refractive index profile is mandatory for the modeling of photonic chips and therefore implementing innovative circuits. Usual index profile determination relies on effective index measurement of propagating modes in planar waveguides coupled with numerical fitting tools. In this paper we propose an alternative technique based on the characterization of the second harmonic generation signature of a nonlinear waveguide. We include the characterization of high-order spatial modes showing their relevance to probe both vertical and lateral distributions. We finally provide an explicit profile ready-to-use for modeling soft-proton exchanged waveguides in lithium niobate and we test its prediction capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferroelectric domain structure has been formed under the action of electron beam scanning in congruent lithium niobate single crystal covered by surface dielectric layer. The obtained types of the domain patterns have been considered as subsequent stages of domain structure evolution. The dependence on irradiated charge density of domain density, length, and period of domain rays and stripe domain width was used for characterization of the domain structure evolution. The threshold irradiated charge density necessary for the formation of solid stripe domain has been revealed. This work describes a novel approach to produce high quality release paper at lower cost than traditional methods. The anti-adhesive properties of release paper require the use of expensive machine glazed kraft or "Glassine" paper as the paper base. A series of polymer coatings including polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyethylene vinyl acetate, and polystyrene were chemically synthesized and coated onto a low cost pulp paper base. Surface roughness (Sa) and smoothness coefficients (k) were determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the interactions between the polymer coating and base paper were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Studies show the use of polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA) as a pre-coating layer on low cost pulp paper exhibits similar anti-adhesive properties as higher cost paper bases. We demonstrate the application of confocal Raman microscopy (CRM) for nondestructive imaging of ferroelectric domains both at the surface and in the bulk of lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) ferroelectric single crystals. The studied model periodical domain structure was created at a [001] cut of tetragonal-phase PMN-PT crystal by the electron beam patterning technique.
